2008 Thanksgiving: Thank You & Vote For Us!

Thanksgiving 2008.Today is Thanksgiving Day. Although it is an American holiday and not a Chinese holiday, I know it is a day for everyone to think about what they are thankful for in their life. I have many things to be thankful for and I want to use this day to say thank you to everyone who has supported me and have supported chinaSMACK.

Contributors and Supporters

These people have contributed 32 of the 117 posts on chinaSMACK so far: Joe, Ian, Ping, Boyang, Shaohua, Kai (not the same person as Kai in the comments from CNReviews), Jerome, Lisa, and Jessi. Some have posted more and some have posted less but I am very appreciative to all of them for their interest, hard work, and support for both chinaSMACK, me, and helping more Chinese people share their voices with the world.

Many websites have linked to chinaSMACK since we began. All of them have helped us grow and share new people with us. I want to thank some of the biggest “referrering websites” to chinaSMACK:

I also want to thank all of our RSS subscribers, commenters, and all visitors. All of you contribute to chinaSMACK in some way. I am happy for that you like our website and I thank you for all the nice emails you have sent to me.

Donations and T-Shirts

I received a total of US$168.96 from people who helped support chinaSMACK by buying a t-shirt or donating. I have not include all the fees from PayPal, but it is enough to let me pay back my friend who help me pay for chinaSMACK’s hosting service. It cost US$166.80 and I give him US$2.16 for interest. :)

I am glad I do not have to worry about that now, but it was too bad it was not enough to help me go to the 2008 CnBloggerCon. I think I need a better t-shirt design. :(

I do not know who the t-shirt buyers are (please send me a picture!) but here is a list of the very nice people who donated: Anonymous, DKwan.com, CN Reviews, William B., Anonymous from Holland, James @ ISpyShanghai.com,and Maxiewawa.

I know it is not easy to make money so thank you very much for your generous support.

Vote for chinaSMACK for the 2008 China Blog Awards!

Some visitors have told me about the 2008 China Blog Awards:

Chinalyst, hosting the English language China blogs community, is pleased to announce the China Blog Awards 2008.

Chinalyst has grown over the past year to become a home for over 200 English-language China blogs dealing with diverse China topics – China news, business, law, technology, travel, expat life, English teaching, Chinese studies etc., – all providing invaluable China information that cannot be found else where. The China Blog Awards is our small tribute to those blogs and the hard-working bloggers behind them.

Voting

Voting will open on the 01/12 and will appear on all blogs on Chinalyst. You’re invited to take a look at all the blogs registered at Chinalyst sorted by categories. You can also access blogs through the posts view and clicking on “source” for any of the posts.

Please note that anonymous voting is allowed, and is limited to one vote per one IP for a duration of 24 hours. This system of voting isn’t perfect and it is subjected to some biases, and yet – we’re only doing this for fun and the promotion of China’s English blogosphere. We trust that our fellow bloggers will do what they can to play fair.

I think chinaSMACK is maybe too new so I do not know how we will do compared to so many other good English blogs. But, if you have enjoy chinaSMACK, I hope you will consider voting for us when the voting period is open after December 1st!

  1. Thanks to everyone! Happy eating to all! =D

    btw, whos canon?

  2. only a fool would celebrate thanksgiving.

  3. underage user alert

  4. Do we really need an excuse to show gratitude?
Post a “thank you-post” whenever you like;) Thanksgiving, like Valentines day and Christmas is created so that rich people can make even more money on crap that pollute and ruin our world.

  5. Hi Joe,

Sorry, I wrote this post when I was in Administrator account so it automatically assign the author to the first user account in the list, which is “canon” who is a Contributor who has not made a post yet. Sorry for the confusion but I think most people can see from the bad English it is me. :)

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. I had a lazy day today with no translating. :)

    Thank you everyone.

  6. I bought a shirt but I haven’t taken a picture of myself in it. I’m pretty certain no one wants to see. LoL. Coming from the States, the t-shirt actually got here quite quickly too. By the way, the pink “chinaSMACK” isn’t really pink on the shirt though, and is more plain red. That might be a good thing for anyone who thinks the pink is a bit, uh, “blaring.” I think Ryan from Lost Laowai commented that once over at CNReviews. I laughed.

I definitely want to thank the non-Fauna contributors like Joe, Ping, draq, and Ian…because translating Chinese to English is tough (and because I remember their posts off the top of my head). You guys rock, so keep it up.

And only 5 comments (2 of which are staffers)? Come on, everyone. There’s gotta be a few more “veterans” here who could manage a thanks to the chinaSMACK crew. Yikes.

  7. To Kai: yea i agree, translating Chinese is a lot harder than I thought especially considering I haven’t used Chinese consistently for like the past 12 years (I moved to the US when I was nine), so I guess it is a good learning process for me. Thankfully, Fauna is always there to correct my dumb mistakes.

To Fauna, could you possibly make another design for the T-shirt? like having a smaller 囧 on the front and the address on the back, because the current 囧 is HUGE…囧rz

    Thanks again everyone!

  8. 不用谢!

  9. I want to thank every contributors of ChinaSMACK. Good work!

  10. thanks contributors to chinasmack and to all the commentors. some good debates ( and flamewars) on here.

I’d like to get a shirt, but I don’t particularly care about the jiong character.

Oh and hot pink seems more appealing to me than red. hehe

  11. You got my vote!

  12. Thanks for the shout-out (the two shout-outs in fact!), but the links from other sites and donations are the least you deserve for a great site.

  13. thanks to fauna and everyone who contributes to the site… this is without a doubt one of the most interesting places on the internet for china observers like myself. great work!

  14. thanks to you all for the always fascinating and wonderful site… I have a lot to be thankful for and will try not to be so invisible in the future.

  15. cool site indeed, but me and thousands like me will learn jack all chinese coz of it. anyhow, thanks all de same.
