This young Chinese guy is playing a popular online game originally from Korea called Audition.

In this game, you must type different directions on your keyboard and press the space button within a limited time in order to dance earn points. You can compete against other players and the difficulty depends on the music. There are many famous music in this game.

Do you think maybe its an involuntary movement / twitch / muscle spasm that is causing him to do it in such a excessive fashion? If that’s the case, we shouldn’t be using him as a source of our entertainment. That’s like staring and laughing at someone who is disabled and then publicly sharing it for others to see. Of course, confirmation that this is a disease must be made first so don’t take my word as criticism.

I think he has a tick. So maybe we shouldnt be making fun of this guy.
But hey, in China political correctness is still a foreign concept, which is not necessarily a bad thing, just different.
My students would always be somberly blunt about how fat my German friend was and laugh and joke about it. And they did that with each other as well, but it never seemed to be mean-spirited.

Hey just a thought Fauna – would u consider posting the original chinese below yr translations of netizen’s comments? Would go well with yr vocab section because then we could see how people use certain words/phrases.

Hi chemii and Jim,

I have considered including the original Chinese text with the English translations. So far I have felt that it is easier to read for most people without the original Chinese text. Many foreigners who see a lot of Chinese will quickly lose interest or get scared and not read the website. Many people also cannot read the original Chinese text on their computers.

I have also considered including the name of the commenter next to each translated comment but most of the time I do not think readers actually care who the commenter is. I think most people just want to get a quick idea of what some Chinese netizens are saying. For Shaohua’s posts, we have include the commenter name as a test but I am not sure if we want to do that or include original Chinese on every post.

Maybe more people can tell me what they think but right now I think it is worse to include the Chinese. I want people to feel more comfortable reading about and learning about Chinese internet things.

but i don’t know how much time this will consume and even if you didn’t do it, you won’t lose any fans ;)

Like some of the above replies, I’m inclined to think he has a tick or something. That said, I still laughed. I mean, it was pretty unexpected and it reminds me of my childhood when we would move our arms and bodies whatever which way trying to avoid something or jump over something or whatever while playing console games.

Come on, admit it, we all did that. And since whatever our bodies did had absolutely no bearing on what actually happened on the screen, we probably looked pretty stupid to the adults.

Re: Chinese/commenter name in posts

I noticed the comments tend to run together in the RSS feeds because they don’t have the light grey background with the quotation mark to separate them like they do on the website. I may not really care who said what but at least the inclusion of commenter names in Shaohua’s posts helped distinguish when someone’s translated comment began and ended.

As for including the original Chinese text, I can see both sides. Including it seems to make it feel more like “oh look, someone translated it” but I admit I don’t bother to read the originals even when they’re there like on GVO. I might if the English translation was really bad, but then again, I think if the English translation was really bad, I might not stick around to read the rest of the post. Tough call.

it’s a shame that Chinese people still think it’s funny to make fun of, laugh at people with physical impediments. This guy probably has Tourette syndrome. It’s sophomoric to derive entertainment out of his involuntary tics.

But shit, why is a GUY playing a game like that!

Oh and also, the Chinese/English debate: I think a link to the original Chinese posts is better than having both Chinese and English to crowd the page.

China did recently host both the Special Olympics and ParaOlympics, both of which helped increase awareness and sensitivity towards disabilities in this country.

I think the context of the video is what makes it funny. It isn’t apparent he has a neurological disorder and viewers first find themselves simply watching a normal looking guy playing a game…until that first expression.

By the way, I think all posts include links to the original Chinese posts already.

I agree with Rick… it’s the internet. Political correctness, mercy, kindness… all in very short supply.

I personally found it hilarious. Does that make me a bad person? No.

You may find it offensive and distasteful. Does that make you oversensitive? No.

Public shaming doesn’t really work on the internet, due to the level of anonymity. Unless there’s a flesh search, I don’t see a curbing of the trend anytime soon.

Personally, I don’t find it funny just b/c one of my classmates was like this. When you’re exposed to it day after day, it just becomes the norm. It’s not so much about political correctness or feeling sorry for someone as it is about it simply not being funny.

Oh goody, chinaSMACK is accessible again. For a moment, I was envisioning internet police barging into some house in Shanghai and inviting Fauna out to tea.

Okay, I agree that laughing at people with disorders that cause them to do things they cannot control is not nice and is indeed somewhat insensitive.

On a philosophical level that accepts reality as being reality, however, I think it is hard to argue that largely harmless odd behavior is not at least somewhat funny for most people. A large part of what makes things funny is what is unexpected. This guy making random facial expressions is unexpected.

If it is something he cannot control, most people will quickly learn to be sensitive to it especially to his face because most people are capable of empathy: understanding how it must suck to have people gawk at you right in front of you over something you have no control of. In partial defense of myself, I really do think it is natural to have had a chuckle response only to then have your conscience kick in and some mild sense of guilt take over.

But seriously, we can acknowledge it being funny just as we can laugh at people who fart or Charlotte York shitting her pants in the Sex and the City movie (yes, I just made that reference). While farts and pants-shitting is more bad timing than a permanent neurological disorder, the expressed phenomenon is the same: it was unexpected and out of the ordinary.

This is one of those situations where the most likely and reasonable response by the vast majority of viewers who don’t have extensive experience with someone with a similar disorder is: “LoL, but, man, that kinda sucks…”

…and then…”wow, that was a girl?”

…and then…”wow, she rocks for being with that guy despite his disorder…”

There, all sense of order and balance is restored to the world. We may rejoice.

The Paralympics are connected with the normal Olympics but I believe the Special Olympics are separate (and was in Shanghai in 2007). Either way, both did increase awareness and sensitivity towards disabilities in China, which is definitely a good thing.

you guys are so ignorant by laughing at this guy. It is obvious that he has ‘Tourette syndrome’. It is a disability that makes the person has involuntary facial and body movement. If you don’t know what that is then perhaps you should look it up.
