derek-smith-chinaSLAP-super-sized4. chinaSLAP Super Sized

Designer: Derek Smith

Design Details: Just a bigger version of my original chinaSLAP design. Again, works best with colors, in my opinion.

Designer Bio: Twenty-three year old American currently working as an English teacher in Shanghai.

5. chinaSMACK Certified By Netizens

peng-guo-certified-by-netizens

Designer: Peng Guo

Design Details: Most websites based on Mainland China often have the ICP registered number and red shield badge at the bottom of their page, e.g. “沪ICP备05000001号” (registered #05000001 by ICP of Shanghai) and “京ICP证080274号” (certified #080274 by ICP of Beijing). They are required to have the ICP license or they will be blocked in Mainland China.

To mock Chinese government-controlled internet and to “represent” Chinese netizens, I replaced the original red shield badge with Jiong badge, “沪ICP备/京ICP证” with “网民证”, “numbers号” with “chinaSMACK号”. So it’s something like “#chinaSMACK certified by Netizens”…

Designer Bio: Native Chinese raised in Canada and United States, currently majoring in art at a graduate school.

6. Hear The Voice of Daily China

umer-farooq-attract7. Attract

Designer: Umer Farooq

Design Details: It is feeling, with quality graphics to attract people

Designer Bio: I’m 30 years old, born in Karachi, and live in Karachi – Pakistan. I have 10 years’ experience of graphics works.

ghotane-dhiraj-peoples-jiong8. People’s JIONG!

Designer: Ghotane Dhiraj

Design Details: I know I am not the only ONE who jiongs every time while browsing chinaSMACK. From the People, for the People, it’s the JIONG! of the People.

Designer Bio: Medical student in Int’l college of Tianjin Medical University, soon to be graduated. Love photography & designing :)

j-hach-splat9. Splat

Designer: J Hach

Design Details: Conceptually, the design is very simple – the chinaSMACK logo, enhanced with an ‘ink splatter’ version of China. I think this is the underlying connection of all stories that are seen on the site – they are all a bit jarring, like when smack yourself against a wall.

Mechanically, the design is easy to print and iconic – should be easy to spot anyone who’s wearing it, regardless of the color combination chosen.

Designer Bio: A guy with a graphic design company in Shanghai, who has been doing the art thing (especially tshirts, posters, mag covers) for about a decade. Also, even though I don’t comment on the stories, I love reading them… always a great way to take a step back and observe what I already know from a different angle.

  1. Haha, first vote.

  2. I personally wouldn’t go with the ‘splat’ and ‘daily china’ designs, as both their logos seems to include countries such as Uyghurstan and Bhö.
    Bizarre?

I like Stamp of Approval though. Look closely.. its a Jiong stamped onto Mao’s forehead! ha ha ha

  3. Some really great ideas; props to all the artists/designers. My two 分:

    1. Plain text is, well, a little plain.

    2. Great, but can’t get past the font…I’d like to see the ChinaSmack font instead.

3 & 4. Not sure if the open hand necessarily connotes “smack” even with the word so prominent…the big strike for me is, again, the font.

    5. Classy, but maybe not irreverent enough for this site.

    6. Classy as well, but connotes airwaves/broadcasting. Looks like the signal originates in Beijing…probably not cool for our beloved Shanghai-based site owner.

    7. A little too much going on.

    8. Needs refining, but not bad. The whole workers-unite-poster thing is way overused, though.

    9. Very tastefully done, but I’d like it better if the ink splotch didn’t look like a sea urchin…maybe more Rorschach-like with some Hainan & Hong Kong dribbles added.

As it stands, I’d vote No. 5 (Certified by Netizens) because I’d wear it. If the font on No. 2 (Stamp of Approval) changed, I might go with that as it probably better represents the spirit of what goes on here. If there were a bit more “Splat” on No. 9, I’d have a really tough time choosing…

  4. I agree, change the font on number 2 and I’d have a really hard time between that and number 5.

And make number 8 a bit higher resolution (and fiddle slightly with the layout) and that would be a top contender too. At the moment it looks a little too jagged because of the aliasing but it’s such a funny idea.

  5. To be honest, I can only see myself wearing #5 chinaSMACK Certified By Netizens. I wonder if it is just because the preview picture looks nicer and is more realistic than the others. However, I think it is just because it isn’t as “loud” and I’m not a big printed tee kinda guy.

Actually, I can probably see myself wearing #6 Hear The Voice Of Daily Chinam, but it kinda reminds me of my own China WiFi graphic over at CNR. LoL, but like chengdude above, I think the chinaSMACK is located in the wrong place. ;) That said, I have nothing against the radiating broadcast motif. It looks cool to me.

Splat is too splatty, and the others are too much for my tastes (again, I’m very “di diao” low-key in what I wear, so no big flashy graphics). I know this is geeky of me, but #7 Attract reminds me of MapleStory Thief tops. If you know what I’m talking about, shame on you!

  6. Yeah, I can only see myself wearing #5. I’d buy at least two of them. The others don’t look that great to me. I hate the word netizens like most neologisms but if it’s written in Chinese, I don’t really care. Clever, elegant, minimal design. Good Job.

  7. I’m voting for No.8!
    No.1,2,3 & 4 are way too simple & common.
No.7 is not attractive for me.
No. 6 reminds me of the epicentre of the earthquake..SORRY :(
No. 9 reminds me of urchin as someone mentioned already.
And No.5 looks fine BUT what to do for those who really don’t understand what does that Chinese characters on it mean!
Even for me, until I read about the description, I had no idea what it meant. I’m just a new reader here & understanding much about ‘JIONG’, I see No. 8 has some good message with the design.
And yes, there’s the website’s URL too, so people might be curious after seeing in the print & browse what’s it about.

    I VOTE #8! I VOTE PEOPLE’S JIONG!!

  8. *5 and *9 best illustrate and represent the “voice” of chinaSMACK I think.

  9. 2 and 5. looks simple and cool.

  10. Ah!! *9 is the best design i think.. It so cool!!!!!!

  11. Please do not cheat. I have removed over 100 fake votes.

    • Hi Fauna,

I think I should respond and try to clear this up.

While I did encourage friends and others familiar with previous work to come to the website and vote for a tshirt design they might like, I do not feel as I cheated and the votes were certainly not fake. It’s not as if I set up an automated process to repeatedly vote for a certain design. I did fail to consider that the word would spread so quickly, though.

Regardless, if the you or the other entries feel that this promotion of the competition was not fair, then I apologize and would request that the design is removed from the competition before any more confusion happens.

      Cheers!

      • I agree with you J.Hach.

      • Hi J Hach,

Thank you for your message. I will explain why I suspect cheating. Please see this picture.

I did not circle everything that is suspicious to me but I have circle some examples. I hope more people can review this and tell me if I am wrong.

There is no problem with friends who support you and vote for you, but I hope you can understand why I am worried. This should just be a fun competition so I prefer that there is no silly problem like cheating. If I am wrong, I will of course return the votes to you, but right now I must be sure everything is fair to everyone. Other people submit designs too, so it would not be fair for them if I did not try to keep this competition fair.

        • Hi again Fauna,

I’m not sure what pic you were trying to post – can you check the link again?

I completely understand the spirit of the competition and why you would be interested in keeping it fair. I would not want to have my design chosen with any resentment attached to it anyway.

So please feel free to handle it as you see fit. While I am sure I would not encourage anyone to alter the results, if you find that is what happened then I take responsibility and request that the entry be removed entirely.

Again, sorry for the confusion. It was not my intention to create any drama over it.

        • Hmmm…well it would be a pity to pull out one of the designs; they are all so creative and varied in character, there’s something for everyone among them, for every voter’s taste. And I’ve been in China long enough to know how quickly word travels and votes are mobilized when it comes to such votings…why would that only be a possible issue with one individual??
As far as I can observe as a frequent visitor to chinaSMACK, everything has been in order about this competition. Of course when I was curious about how the results were a day after I placed my vote, my first thought was of the design on first place, “yeah right, that guy had all his friends vote for him.” But that’s just what happens all around the world and unless you have the website built in a certain way, you can’t avoid that. And you wouldn’t have to. I am sure there are more than enough people not related to the contestants to balance this out.

I did notice that the first time I visited this page specifically, the voting ‘boxes’ did not show up at all; I had to reload the page and even when I clicked my vote, it wasn’t quite apparent whether it had been accepted correctly, so I clicked again. Maybe it’s a scripting problem and maybe that’s what’s causing this issue. Did anyone else have that problem? Anyway, I hope this is resolved fairly…may the best design win!

  12. I like #5 and #6

  13. #5 is simple, clean, and well designed. For sure a keeper.

  14. Hey, I’m going to vote for the design which has creases in the picture!!!! Creases and wrinkles. I just CAN’T look past the creases and wrinkles! They are so well designed!!! I wonder if the T-shirt will have wrinkles and creases on it when I buy it!!! I hope so!!!! Wooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!

For the Chinese who don’t get sarcasm.
    That was it.

Or maybe, I’ll vote for the best design instead.

  15. I kinda like the font on number 2 as it is, but if people like the actual design maybe we should just get the designer to simply replace the lettering?

    Fauna?

  16. Love the #5, great design. They’re all pretty good though.
