Swine Flu: China Quarantines Mexicans, Chinese Reactions

“China: Quarantining all Mexicans”

Health officials in China might be reading too much Michelle Malkin these days; following a decision to cancel all flights from Mexico, which then warned its citizens to stay away from China, authorities in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou are reported to have rounded up at least 41 Mexican citizens, none of whom are said to be showing any symptoms of H1N1.

Portal news websites such as Global Times are closely reporting on all developments of the global endemic; in a story on the “dissatisfaction” expressed by the Mexican ambassador to China, Jorge Guajardo—who earlier suggested that H1N1 originated in Eurasia—at seeing Mexican citizens being singled out, readers have written:

When someone gets sick, out of concern for the health of others they should just stay put at home and take care of their pigs, not go around spreading the virus. And nobody invited you here, so it’s better than you don’t come.

With communicable diseases of this degree, we should quarantine anyone who comes under suspicion. If we suspect a bunch, then quarantine them all. With a population of 1.3 billion, I’d be fine if we quarantined a hundred of them.

Aye, enough already. They want to come to our country and make a mess, bust up our country, they’re just really devious.

With countries as hostile and unfriendly to China as this one, why should we help them?! Just what do our diplomats think they’re doing? Why aren’t they telling us what the real attitudes toward China are overseas? From the looks of it, that five million USD was a real waste. We should be calling for the dismissal of our diplomatic personnel posted overseas!

I can see why Mexican diplomats are “dissatisfied”, but this dissatisfaction is absolutely useless in protecting the lives of the people. That H1N1 spread so widely in just a few days just goes to show that the measures taken by their government aren’t paying off.

Fire this ambassador and get a new one

Good job, you need to consider the lives and safety of the people. If the virus spreads to our country, will Western politicians come help us then? Pay them no attention. Putting a temporary halt to flights was the correct thing to do. The government has done an extremely good job this time, and I support them wholeheartedly.

To send them all home would be the best, but I support quarantining them. If they’re not willing to go back though, what happens if it spreads? At this time, we should be thinking about the interests of the majority of the people. Even though we quarantined them, we are still treating them, and no thanks for it

Roll off back to Mexico!
Influenza has an incubation period, and even our own people are in quarantine, so what makes you so special?! What’s more, the first case within China was one of you Mexicans! If you hadn’t come, China’s number of infected and suspected cases will still be at zero!!!!!

What’s so wrong about thinking about everyone’s safety? In times like these, where people are from isn’t important. The Chinese people unlucky enough to be on the same plane as the infected person were quarantined too!! You haven’t been infected with the virus yourself, have you?!

Over at NetEase, news that H1N1 has now passed from a human to pigs on one farm in Western Canada has received over a thousand comments; those currently being highlighted read:

Craziness, but is the problem with pigs or with people?

The world’s pigs are terrified: “people flu is coming”

I think I read before that if passes to pigs, it can mutate. Canada’s in trouble.

Ah, so it’s the pigs’ fault?

[Note from Fauna: "原来还是猪的错" should be "So it was the pigs' fault after all."]

Specialists who said pigs couldn’t catch this virus must be blood relatives of pigs themselves, otherwise they wouldn’t be so clear on the subject!

  1. Those who say its important to care for health concerns are missing the point. No one will blame China for being very cautious and canceling flights from Mexico or Canada or other effected countries. But detaining people who haven’t even been to a country with a single case of infections in the last few months simply because they were born in such a country makes no sense! This is simply restricting people’s liberty for no reason.

This is the point that people are upset about.

  2. Totally agree. To detain Mexicans just because they were born in the country where the virus comes from is really stupid. Typical stinkin’ thinkin’ from the peoples republic of children.

  3. reminds me of the US rounding up japanese americans during wwII…i mean, definitely not as serious as that, but this seems to have the same lack of judgement and criteria for violating human rights…if they havent been to mexico in the last month or two then why bother them?

  4. 0_O,
You know very little, yet speak very loudly…

First, nobody knows the exact incubation period for this new strain of flu. There are only rough estimates.

The 25 year old Mexican man who tested positive in Hong Kong did not show any symptoms of flu when he passed through Pudong airport in transit. The quarantine began after this incident.

There is definitely a lot of garbage floating around on this subject, maybe a way to deflect attention to the way the Mexican government have handled things….To be clear, China did not rounding up random Mexican citizens, only travelers who arrived on the same AeroMéxico flight from Mexico with the 25-year-old Mexican man who tested positive in Hong Kong. This includes more than just Mexican nationals, but also Chinese citizens. Again, same freakin’ flight! How fuckin’ unreasonable is that?

    • “To be clear, China did not rounding up random Mexican citizens, only travelers who arrived on the same AeroMéxico flight from Mexico with the 25-year-old Mexican man who tested positive in Hong Kong.”

I came here to point out that same thing. In the U.S. the media are reporting it as if China was scouring the country for Mexicans and then locking them up wholesale and of course, people are believing and repeating this. Ugh.

      • From a couple of credible reports I’ve seen (with pics etc) a couple of Mexicans were taken off a flight in Beijing and put in isolation in hospital even though none of them had been in Mexico or the States for months. Sounds like the type of paranoia that would see ambassadors being recalled if it happened to Chinese citizens overseas to me.

  5. Honestly, it seems as if China’s actions with quarantining the groups/school/etc. of Mexicans is largely political. Mexico and China have not been on good terms for quite some time, and China does not really need Mexico in any way whatsoever. Thus, what better way for the power-hungry government to show its “control” and make a defiant global statement than by indiscriminately putting these Mexican tourists, businessmen/women, etc. into quarantine.
I agree, these people were not chosen randomly–and there were Chinese citizens among the groups–but the larger point is still made. China does not need Mexico, beyond making a show of its own power and ability to do what it pleases. I watched an interesting video that brings up this H1N1 issue, as well as a few others, at newsy.com. It’s worth checking out:

    • Kt D,

On the one hand, you say you agree that quarantined people were not chosen randomly, but on the other hand, you say China is indiscriminately putting Mexicans into quarantine; your logic never ceases to amaze me!

China did not enforce quarantines until it was found out that a 25-year-old Mexican male tested negative at Pudong airport in transit to Hong Kong, but then tested positive at Hong Kong airport a very short time later.

If this is about making a political statement, these Mexicans would be quarantined in tents instead of 5-star hotels!

    • I am sure to share interesting points with friend.

Mexico is so poor that they sell out to anyone who will do business with them. They created the zombie problem, and they are so machismo.

No wonder all the Mexican people want to come to our country. They have it pretty bad over there. Mexican Americans tend to be more progressive. It takes a generation to rid the males of their supremicist attitudes.

  6. Quarantining people who have flown in from Mexico in the last month or so should be OK, its only if they actually are rounding up any Mexican citizens no matter when they arrived that anyone should be complaining.

  7. Talking about politics..all I know about this nation is that whatever news against China will be bought by everybody, whoever speaks against China thinks himself cool. Talking about liberty, human right stuffs, actions of the Chinese government may not be reasonable in the American eyes, but the people in China should never take the blame for the action of the government. To attack the Chinese government is reseaonable politically, but to attack the Chinese people is just malicious. People who do that just to make themselves feel good are despicable, and this website is tashy for being so biased and exaggrating.

  8. pinches chinos putos

  9. poor chinese people, so ignorant, so yellow, SO UGLY!!!

  10. ROFL, chinese would so do that. haha!

  11. pinches chinos putos

  12. Well SARS came from China, does that mean all Chinese people should be quarantined when they go to another country??? My God, I can’t believe how racist and ignorant people are, saying “Coming over here to bust up our country” and “No one invited you”.
