American Basketball Player Throws Money To Students

Here is a quick English explanation from Shanghaiist:

What was meant to be a friendly game of basketball in Hunan Province has burst into a furious debate on the internet, after an American player tossed money out to a crowd of students… and some students actually scrambled to pick it up.

According to Sohu, the (roughly translated) American Gym Ambassdor Men Star’s Basketball Team” (美国体育使者男子明星篮球队) was asked to play against the “Lithuanian National Basketball Team” (立陶宛苏托瓦职业男子篮球队) in a local gym in Xiangxi last Saturday.

The game itself was without controversy, but when the American team left the high school, one of the basketball players opened up the bus and threw RMB at the high school students.

The original poster claimed that many students scrambled to get the money. One female high school student threw away some of the money in the trash to protest, but another student came and picked it back out.

Like other foreigners-throwing-money-incidents in the past, this one triggered a huge reaction amongst people. The majority of students and commenters condemned the basketball player, demanding an explanation for his actions.

Comments from Sina: “Embarrassing, Hunan middle school students like beggars picking up American’s money”

方块头:

What you say sounds great [referring to original poster's criticism of this incident], but if someone scattered the sky full of an old man’s head [banknotes/bills/cashnotes] — and they were red [100 RMB note], and you do not go pick them up, then I will eat the toilet in my house.
The sanctimonious ones fight the hardest [for the money].
If it were me, I would collect it all and then go slap the foreigner’s face, and after slapping him, I’d run. emoticons|E___6291ZHTSSIB|也不行~
Face and dignity I no doubt want, but banknotes also.
You’re welcome to criticize me.

独孤久败:

Those who cannot accept what happened can go to a big street in America and scatter a bunch of USD and see if the Americans will come pick them up.

yanhailang5720:

What is the big deal, do not blame anyone, just blame the photographer and that dog who made the post for causing controversy.

7号永恒:

Picking up money means low character? How come you TMD do not go look at the scene of a car accident on the highway, where the villagers can risk their lives rushing from the side to pick up things, that is just robbery in disguise.
If you feel this is very embarrassing, you too can bring several thousand USD to an American campus and see what happens when you throw them.

只是一个爱国的人:

Money…is a good thing…who doesn’t love [money]? However, even taking a dog’s money…seems a little wrong.

苦聪人:

What if?
What if that money was not thrown by a foreigner but by a Chinese person?
What if a Chinese person went to some small school in America and threw USD, what would happen?
What if I tomorrow got married, and I scattered a bunch of fruit drops, what then?
What if this news was fake?

lpc801211:

If this incident happened in an American campus, maybe the students there would have a gun battle! emoticons|E___7247ZH02SIB|祈祷

After watching, the target of people’s anger should not be pointed at these children who have not yet come of age. The target of anger should be pointed at the country’s education. The country’s policies have created a wealth gap—

allen2009:

I, as a person’s father, deeply know that one must start young in cultivating a child’s values, and sense of morality!
Chinese people, you cannot throw money in front of other country’s people. What happened and how the students behaved is undoubtedly not the main point. The main point is character education!

就是不中:

Seeing these pictures, I say they are embarrassing, and indeed it was losing our countrymen’s face in front of foreigners.
However, if you carefully think about this another way, if what was thrown were 100 RMB bills, don’t say children, even adults would be running to pick them up.
This is the nature of people.
Many times, in front of money, people have already lost their most basic dignity! emoticons|E___6095ZHWSSIB|怒

Comments from NetEase: “American basketball player scatters money at Hunan campus causing students to scramble for the money, truly shameful!”

枭十一郎:

Americans using this method to insult our countrymen, this is too outrageous.

yzyks2002:

Chinese children, you guys are truly embarrassing!

cswqhan:

Fuck, American black donkey.

x7rq8:

Reaching out to ask for money is too embarrassing, where did this bunch of disappointing bastards come from?! Really making a fool of themselves. We must find a lesson from this incident: Middle school’s basic education, we need to reflect on it.

yanghua1238:

What the hell is this? Fortunately there was still a girl who had some will [did not pick up the money], made me feel it was not that sad.

raboimage:

In China, having money means having dignity. Actually, this is an epitome of China’s current situation, no matter what methods you use, several years or several decades later, you will realize that those defending dignity in the end are all poverty-stricken and down on their luck, with the successful people having made it through experiencing hardships. Dignity is established on those who have capital. Without capital, what dignity can you talk about?

东方德赛:

Has anyone thought of why that American basketball player would do such a thing as scattering money? What was his motive? Has anyone suspected/confirmed the authenticity of this piece of news’?

aoyi66:

Strongly request that bastard be searched out and blacklisted, make him apologize to the entire country, and have him go kowtow before Mao at Tiananmen Square admitting his mistake…

smallbear00:

In any country, including America, Western Europe, Japan, etc., someone throwing money will naturally have people going to pick it up. If someone wants to throw, let them throw, they have money! This completely does not involve any kind of character problem/issue. With regards to that girl, I want to say that although she felt that throwing money was an insult to us, did she consider whether ripping RMB is disrespecting RMB? You can not want this money, pick it up and then give it to the local Red Cross or give it to our friends in the earthquake disaster area.
So all of this is talking nonsense.

666777qwe888:

Several years ago in Chengdu, there was also someone scattering money at Tianfu Square!!! — After being stopped by the police, he was also detained a few days! Now this Westerner scatters money and nothing happens? 5000 years of servility still exists!~!!!

  1. Hmmmm, they will accept BILLIONS of dollars in AID from Japan and Canada (until recently) and investment from all over the world that builds their whole economy, but one dude throws some hundies and the whole world falls apart?

Chinese people are mentally retarded. That is just a FACT. In a country that worships money, this should be a front page story of how chinese are smart to pick up the stupid lao wai’s money.

  2. I think the only reason some Chinese people are angry is because they have subconscious notions of inferiority to Caucasian foreigners. If it was other Chinese people throwing money, there wouldn’t be much controversy. It works both ways too — the basketball player might have false beliefs about the Chinese being poor. And I’ve read the other comments on this issue and I agree: if you threw USD at a middle school in the US, many kids would stampede to get a share. I don’t think the basketball player meant any disrespect or harm. I just think it was a stupid move. Unnecessarily extravagant. Just stupid.

  3. Jesus..

The guy threw a bit of cash out of a bus window, people picked it up. Most people have to work hard for very little financial reward. If someone is generous/foolish enough to part with their money by throwing it out of a bus window, there’s always someone smart enough to take it from them.

We live for 80 years give or take, life is far too short to worry about someone literally throwing their money away to school kids for no valid reason.

    Basketball player – less money
Kids at school – more money

  4. I know Im late, I just found this site, but I think it needs addressing. The Chinese people need to look at the propaganda that has completely enveloped their own thought process. They have been taught for years, since birth, that there is an outside cause for all of China’s problems including rural poverty. This teaching deflects inspection into the real cause for most of China’s poverty – the government itself. I have taught in China for years, and I am stunned at the ideas most of the youth have about themselves and their country’s history. All of the myths about foreign imperialists, the mythical Han race (which does not exist(, the need to right 5000 years of historical wrongs against them! That is why the rest of the world does not listen to the opinions of most Chinese, the inability to analyze their own situation objectively without falling back on the same mantra – “Someone has disrespected the Chinese people!!!!!!”

    • @ cmfeirs…..man, you’re right on the money.

China/Chinese people do have this “perpetual victim” mindset and seem to attribute all of their problems to other people and other nations without accepting any responsibility for their own actions and the actions of their leaders throughout history.

      5000 years and still developing!

  5. If a Chinese person threw USD in America I’d take it!

  6. You know, I’m thinking about this story and it reminds me of something that happened to me in Beijing once.

I was hanging out with 2 Chinese girls (sounds bad, right?) outside of the Silk Market and drinking a coke.

2 little kids approached me and begged me for a sip of my coke…..they gulped it down in like 2 seconds.

So, since they seemed genuinely poor (I hear that a lot of the “beggars” in China aren’t actually beggars…has anyone else heard this?) and hungry and I took them to a street vendor and bought them each 2 bottles of water and an icecream….I’m sure I spent less than 20 RMB.

The 2 Chinese girls I was with scolded me for my actions and I wondered why for a long time because:

    (1) Charity is a good thing…..right?

    (2) 20 RMB is like $3 USD which I can totally afford, it’s not like I was buying them a car or anything.

I told this story to some of my friends here and they told me that my actions caused the two Chinese girls to LOSE FACE because here I am a foreigner helping out poor Chinese people while they stood around and did nothing.

Charity does NOT exist in China the way it does in America so I wonder if foreigners who display anything that resembles UNSELFISH, ALTRUISTIC behavior makes them feel bad about themselves.

Does that make sense to anyone else?

    • I can’t believe how outraged everyone is on this forum. It’s really shocking to me … and honestly makes me a little fearful of the Chinese culture. I don’t like feeling self-conscious for being a good person or being generous.

This has more to do with them than it does with the guy giving away money. Maybe there are many greedy people in their country who are self righteous in their generous acts. Is this the reason they are viewing his actions as self serving?

      I’m just completely confused.

  7. i bet his own kinds back in africa america or haiti might need the money more. why not throw money at them?

    • It’s very weird to say “his own kind.”

I’m sure he’s made lots of donations to Africa and especially Haiti. Perhaps the kids in this article didn’t need the money, or could they have used it? I admire how proud Chinese people are to take care of themselves, but the amount of outrage that people are expressing here is unnecessary. But I can understand being insulted.

If some wealthy Chinese businessman came to America and threw their money around (in a developing country) it would be insulting too I think.

But you have to understand, to him, he was doing good and giving these kids a good day (was it that much money?)

(Does this have anything to do with the fact he is black?)

VERY FEW in this forum has shown very little understanding in this situation. This is shocking to me.

  8. AmericanblackkidinHK

haha you people make me laugh. “Hes making it rain, imitating hip hop videos.” You people really do buy everything the white man says and shows you.

  9. I’m not even gonna bother reading through the comments. Drama, drama, drama. God, get a fucking life, people. People like free stuff, end of story. Nobody got hurt or coerced into doing anything degrading.

  10. I HAVE BEEN GOING THROUGH THE WHOLE POST ON THIS FORUM AND THERE IS NOTHING WRONG ABOUT ONE THROWING OUT MONEY TO THE PUBLIC.TO BE HONEST,IT NOT AN INSULT,HE WAS TRYING TO SHOW GENEROSITY AND THOSE WHO NEEDS SHOULD HAVE AND IF YOU DONT THEN WALK AWAY,IT HAPPENS EVERY WHERE IN U.S,CANADA,EUROPE,WHY SHOULD CHINESE PEOPLE GET MAD AT THIS,SO THEY WANNA TELL ME THAT EVERYTHING IS O.K WITH CHINESE PEOPLE WITH A POPULATION OF OVER 2 BILLION PEOPLE AND NO ONE NEEDS HELP FROM ANYONE.
CHINESE PEOPLE PLEASE DONT LOOK THIS AS AN INSULT.

  11. its just because hes black so u ashamed!!! hahaha!!!

  12. That depends. if the beggar asked for it good job. But if the beggar didn’t ask for it shame on you for assuming the guy was a beggar.

How would you like it if I came up to you and handed you 10 yuan as if you needed it? See where the controversy is?

Now the above issue is controversial because instead of regular guy giving to poor, it’s supposedly rich foreigner giving money to poor people in a poor country. So some people are seeing the player as some arrogant bastard who assumed the people would all want the money badly.

We don’t know why the player did it, but that’s how it can be seen, which is why it’s controversial.

  13. Hey rich guy
    seems you’re so rich
just transfer the 10 kuai to me, I’ll gladly accept it
if you have thousands of kuais, just send it to me, PM me for my bank account
I don’t really care if you humilliate me or something. Just PROVE your big mouth full of bullshits

  14. you are so fkin proud to be chinese, a typical
    lol
try insulting me with giving me money
