Every university I’ve been to is surrounded by a wall with only a few gates. Chinese New Year — also known as Spring Festival, is China’s biggest holiday, and it happens next week. Only for the week before, during, and after this holiday are fireworks allowed in the city… already I hear a bunch of them. It’s supposed to be earth shaking and deafening during the holiday itself.
[...] Today is the last day of Chinese New Year (i.e. the 15th day). The sky will be blazing with fireworks. Unfortunately, there have already been deaths and accidents as a result of the fireworks. During the first week of CNY, there have already been 1,626 accidents, which apparently is already lower than previous years! The papers were even going on about how this year is a “safer” year. Then, just on Friday, a fireworks explosion in Guangdong province led to at least 20 deaths and 50 accidents … the death toll is still increasing but let’s hope nothing as eventful as last year’s CCTV disaster will happen again this year. The Mandarin Oriental hotel next to the main CCTV building burned for several hours and the flames shot up to as high as 7m or so. Here are some photographs from Chinasmack: [...]

Does nobody in China think these buildings are beautiful? I think these buildings are masterpieces designed by one of the best architects in the world. Most new buildings in China are so boring, but these are different, so wonderful. It is a shame that China does not take care very well about the work of Rem Koolhaas.
