Another med student here.

Yes, we do this shit all the time, last sem with the bones as drumsticks, paperweights, etc to play with while listening to the theory part of the lecture, (I also did the skull hat thing) and this sem with skin and some organs, especially the lungs! the old people's lungs are kind of hard and not so fun to play with, but a child cadaver's lungs feel so slippery and soft and jiggly like it's made of jello- especially fun to toss around. Surprisingly super resilient too; wonders of the human body right here.

Do the instructors care? No they don't. They were actually especially pleased when we would play with them out of our own volition (without damaging them!) because it helps A LOT with the learning process. As one of my best anatomy professors used to say: "Laugh now, remember tomorrow." And I did. At least for last sem's finals.

Anyway if we're just going by the reactions of my classmates, half started anatomy thinking it's disrespectful and wouldn't do anything to "slight" the body, and the other half just went in trying to learn while having fun. After one sem, the conservative half converted.

Naysayers, DEAL WITH IT.

You lot are making a big fuss out of nothing and I do agree it is done everywhere around the world. I knew medical students in Germany, France and Ireland and all told me they were doing the same /had done the same things. Now they are proper doctors, nurses and have deep respect for human life believe me.

There also are cases of "hazing" like putting a cut off hand in the beds of students and this actually is more detrimental. Some have been shocked enough to leave medical school especially when they had been there only a few days.

Students are still young and want to amuse themselves. GET OVER IT. They have to dissassociate their feelings in order to be proper doctors later on. Do you want to go to the hospital with a broken arm and a doctor fainting at the sight of it ?
Medical people have to have a strong stomach and remain cool in all situations especially in ER.

I would worry more about students shrieking with disgust or vomitting at the sight of ...bones ! They would never make it !

It is a way to cope ! Don't you know that people who have AIDS come up with the worst jokes about their condition ? It is to alleviate their suffering. But of course if someone else would tell those jokes..that would not do !

Policemen, psychiatrists , all people dealing with people think up of the worst jokes. It has a palliative effect.

Basic human psychology.
