Foreigners Camping On The Great Wall, Chinese Reactions

From NetEase:

Angry! Foreigners eating, drinking, shitting, pissing, sleeping on the Great Wall!

On the night of August 3, about one hundred foreign tourists stayed overnight on the Great Wall. Just their tents and sleeping bags alone required a truck to transport up the mountain, and the Jinshanling management granted clearance pretending to be ignorant. Looks like “Protecting the Great Wall and tourism environment” is not worth mentioning next to colorful cash.

What more, this kind of thing happened 2 just days after a newspaper reporter’s investigative report on the problem of illegal overnight stays on the Great Wall! These people cannot wait to earn money! It is evident that the management and individual bosses are in collusion with each other like snakes and rats living together in a nest!

Beginning from 2003, there have been people who have built “hotels” for overnight tourists, renting sleeping bags to foreign tourists at a price of 400-500 yuan per person. This reporter learned from Luanping County Great Wall management that people were once allowed to stay overnight on the Great Wall, but must pay 100 yuan overnight stay fee and 50 yuan entrance fee, but now tourists staying overnight on the Great Wall is no longer allowed. Yet there are still foreign tourists living on the Great Wall.

Many of those coming to the 4A-level Jinshanling Great Wall scenic area are foreign tourists. After arriving at Jinshanling Great Wall, there are people on the sides hawking sleeping bags for personal profit. Jinshanling Great Wall itself is a lightning area, and previously here there have been incidents of tourists being struck by lightning! When I think of the British William-Lindsay leading a group of foreigners picking up trash on this portion of the Great Wall, doing everything to protect the Great Wall for 20 years, I don’t know whose face [foreigners or Chinese] should be red…

Comments from Tianya:

百花盛开2009:

Sad, many of China’s scenic spots are all ruined, with the managers only collecting money, not managing/taking care of them.

joechim:

Foreigners’ characters are really low.
Embarrassing themselves all the way here to China.

Jerry44122:

Instead of taking care and protecting our cultural heritage, they have taken it away to make money.

123yjz123:

Once the Great Wall, now the Money Wall.

284792953:

I need to go see the Great Wall soon, otherwise I might not have the chance later.

yetan1:

Too breathtaking. I don’t think this kind of tourism should be allowed, at most let tourists look from the side or have helicopter tours, or even a cable car would work.

阿里大牙:

Don’t blame the foreigners, they paid money, they are consumers. Don’t we all say everyday that we must protected the lawful rights and interests of consumers?

归云轩:

I do not think we can blame this on “laowai” having poor characters.
There are a lot of bastards amongst our country’s people too.

ddww2008:

Foreigners camping on the Great Wall is said to be sullying beauty!
Then what is our countrymen carving “到此一游” ["visited here"] on the bricks???

谁吃瓜子皮:

I haven’t been to the Great Wall yet, and dammit, seeing this I don’t want to go anymore! And good Chinese?! If I go and see those bastard “laowai” eating, drinking, shitting, pissing, sleeping on the Great Wall without giving them a beating, then I would not be a good Chinese person! Those who do not go to the Great Wall are not good Chinese, but those who go and do not flatten those foreigners who insult the Great Wall are truly not good Chinese!

Comments from NetEase:

harvvy:

At least foreigners won’t make a complete mess of the environment, as I believe they will take their trash with them.

ssshs:

Sigh, no matter what you say, it is still a world wonder. NND, unscrupulous tourist managers and foreigners.

liuchun79746:

All day talking about how our countrymen’s characters aren’t high when abroad, tmd, I have rarely met any “laowai” with high characters in China!

lichengwei_5:

There is nothing that can be done, this thing was made public a long time ago. There has even been group sex on the Great Wall, so other than collecting money, do the managers [of the Great Wall] know how to do anything else?

月泮湾:

Angry, unscrupulous managers.
Fortunately, at least it isn’t Chinese people sleeping on there, otherwise, there would be even more garbage to pick up.

xinxinxiu:

I see a sequence, not trash…

鸿亿五金厂:

LZ, do you know? “Camping is not allowed on the Great Wall” was written for us Chinese people only!!!

viping-963:

What can you do? They are foreigners, they are “international friends”, so we must wait on them as if they were our ancestors.

hrblgql:

Sigh! When we ourselves become clean, self-disciplined, then “laowai” will also be self-disciplined. Who let you go piss and shit in front of other peoples’ front doors?

jialanbaobei:

Ugh…too shameless…what country are they from??? I too want to go to their country to ruin their environment/surroundings!!!

Should people be allowed to camp on the Great Wall?

  1. There are pollutions everywhere in China. I mean EVERYWHERE. ‘Cause local inhabitants just do not respect their environment or cultural heritage (it’s been totally destroyed since 1949). On the other hand, it would be fun to camp out there thought.

  2. So many more important things to get upset about in China that have nothing to do with foreigners…

  3. There is nothing wrong with the Tourists (no matter they are Caucasian, Indian or African). They just paid for the right to camp in the Great Wall. If I knew I can do that I will certainly do it next time. (I’m Chinese)

  4. They are Xinjiang separatists, not foreigners!

    Strongly Oppose Ethnic Stereotypes!

  5. “I haven’t been to the Great Wall yet, and dammit, seeing this I don’t want to go anymore! And good Chinese?! And there it is my foreign friends. That is exactly what Chinese think of us. They hate you and me, read the comments. They copy, lie, steal and the cry as if they are the victims all while rattling their sabres and threatening us at the same time.

I read an article on China Daily today about “protecting Chinese business men abroad from VICIOUS XENOPHOBIC attacks.” Most of those blogs called for retalliation or even military intervention to “protect” “Chinese abroad”.

Its not that Chinese are smart, its that we are so stupid to LET them do this shit. I wish Bush was still in office and we just bombed the great wall. Maybe we would find Osama there

    • The next vicious zenophobic attack will be in Algeria…guaranteed. There are also other flashpoints in African countries which have signed up for Chinese financed mining joint ventures. Late payment of wages, extended work hours, non-existent workplace safely and environmental problems.

      • That’s it? Seems Chinese companies operating abroad hold themselves to much higher standards than their local counterparts.

Next vicious xenophobic attack will be local, my friend.

(Assuming we can consider the abused various minorities harboring hatred as xenophobic)

        • Rick. I hope that was irony. Do a google search on Africa. I bet the farm on my prediction against your Beijing apartment and a few of your second wives.

          • Partially sarcasm, partially ‘adding’ to the point that Chinese companies *everywhere*, abroad or local, fuck their employees over and treat them like dirt. (not all of course..but many)

  6. Ha Ha! I love the comments on this. Foreigners are ruining The Great Wall! Who took the money? Who sold them the sleeping bags, Who took the bags up to the wall? Chinese people. Hilarious! I’ve been to The Great Wall two times and was amazed by the beauty. I was also amazed by the amount of trash I saw on the ground. If China wants to become cleaner it’s up to Chinese people to stop throwing garbage everywhere and become environmentaly aware. Don’t blame those ‘horrible, evil foreigners’, take responsibility for your own actions.

  7. The level of Chinese racism and ignorance is amazing. They only object to foreigners people camping out on the Wall. It’s OK for Chinese to camp, even though Chinese leave their rubbish everywhere while westerners put it in the bin. The truth is, Chinese just can not stand the sight of foreigners in China.

    • Michael,

You are so right. They even disdain us in our own countries. You Tube (if you are outside of China) the Chinese riots in Milan where they were pulling out Chinese flags in the middle of ITALY singing the Chinese national anthem rioting because they broke the law and then got mad at the police.

I laugh when I read the storied of Chinese getting “VICIOUSLY” attacked in Africe,… hey retards, its AFRICA what did you think was going to happen?

      • FDLU. Don’t denigrate Africa like that. Even though many African countries are basketcases, at least they have given the world some great music. Mali, Nigeria and Senegal (my personal choices) have produced musicians to die for…..Salif Kieta, FELA KUTI and Baaba Mal to name just three. Listen. Enjoy. Peace.

        • Fela Kuti is the bomb, just a pity the guy was as fucked up as they come.

        • Oh, and the day that China produces a musician as whacked out and cool as Fela Kuti is the day they get the right to talk smack about the Africans. Seriously, the guy set up his own country, declared himself the Black President, married hundreds of women, as well as cutting brilliant tunes dissing African governments (go check the lyrics for International Thief-Thief and O.D.O.O., although the tunes are just as good if you ignore the lyrics).

  8. The Chinese who object to foreigners camping on the wall are the better educated city dwellers, and those who live outside of China. The local people in Hubei don’t object. They are more interested in business. Xenophobia doesn’t pay.

  9. Chinese wall is as fake as my wifes prada. But please dont tell her…

  10. Chinese film crews sleep on the great wall all the time… do you know how far it is to get down from the wall and go to the nearest hotel?

  11. I have not been to the Wall for at least 5 years. But I remember Chinese people squatting and shitting on the wall, ALL OVER IT. Many people had shat on their instant noodle / meal foam trays and left the trays on the ground. Orange peals were everywhere.

Another thing… the tourist sections of the Wall are filled with shops that sell garbage. Part of this national monument was made into a cheap down-hill roller-coaster ride. The group tours which take foreigners to the Wall usually stop and crappy restaurants (and the tour-guide gets kick-backs). Yes Chinese people get angry about a bunch of White (albeit, ugly and out-of-shape) back-packers?

  12. I remember going there- reached a point where I wanted to take a photo and a group of chinese came over and asked us to pay to take a photo there because that spot had a sign that indicated how far we’d reached. Urgh. It wasn’t even their sign. It’s sick how people want to take advantage of their own culture and make themselves and their fellow countrymen look so bad. (I’m Chinese btw)

  13. You can’t blame all the foreigners characters on things like “Tom Green” and “Students”.

The same way, I hope they wouldn’t blame us for the lowlives of our country……

I do admit…. the sign of trash is a bit disturbing…. but I can also see that these pictures seem to be the worst of those taken.

Did they clean up when they left?

Did they even know it was illegal?

And where was our police to stop them?

Who was the real ones at fault?

And to state, we aren’t talking about moral issues of sleeping here… since it was allowed in the past.

It’s just the thought of them not cleaning up after, which this article doesn’t state if they did or didn’t. They only showed the pictures of when they just woke up.

Ohhh well, it looks like, trash posted trash.

    Why post an incomplete story?

And didn’t we just have a story about a girl getting her privacy took away? I mean…… How did you react to that, when you have someone here taking pictures of them putting clothes on.

Check it out, one of the girls is trying to put her pants on with a guy taking her picture from above.

But please do forgive me if I’m jumping to conclusions and that another foreigner is actually taking the pictures.

    Anyway…. lol

  14. i love to take a shit on the chinese wall or anything chinese. 5,000 years of culture…ha…5,000 years of barbarism

  15. their whole country is a dump becoz they r scum, f em

  16. Why do countries spent so much resources and human lives for super structures that really do nothing? Reminds me of those empty high rises that the North Koreans built to show the world that they’re modern like everyone else. I rather spend the money that was used to build the Bird’s Nest on 5,000 new schools. Now, that’s something to be proud of.

    • Miako…I think they do it for “face”….my opinion of most Chinese people (based on my personal experiences) is that they prefer STYLE to SUBSTANCE…know what I mean?

  17. Miako – same reason the Pharaoh built the Sphinx with all his treasure – to legitimize himself.

  18. maybe posted already but the condition (according to wiki) show what the chinese really think of their precious wall…

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_wall_of_china#Condition

  19. Barbarians on the defence wall- very symbolic.

  20. the great yellow master race

ok i just cant let this idiot to walk away that simple:

    - The link you provided doesn’t state anything about sleeping on the wall. I saw hiking, cycling, but no “camping”.–

whahahah.. this was camping you idiot. nopt all people are coming to look on the wall and get into the bus for another “chinese atraction” and again you missed my point those “forigners” sleepig on the wall are doing it because there are not camp places around the wall.

—If you want to be volunteer, you can also sleep on archeological sites of Felix Romuliana, or Timacum Minus: http://www.vap.org.uk/europe/serbia/heritage-protection/workcamp-2009-1.html, but you’ll not sleep on site. You’ll sleep in provided accommodation. This system is established by German archeologist. Camping in Germany is tightly regulated. Comparing that with sleeping on GW is nonsense.—

you idiot just proved my point.

–I did a check, so I found only for Hadrian’s wall to be erected by soldiers.—

all limes was build by legionares. its stupid to get slaves there when you need support of local population and are close to/inside of enemies land.

—-As Rome was slave state, I assumed that slaves participated in construction. My comment on great structures and slavery is also about Pyramids, Babylon, Parthenon,–

like Limes Pyramids were build by free people. its proved by historical and archeological research, you dumb loser.

–I didn’t know for Fresh Kills, but why didn’t you mention the land that Netherlands claimed from sea? Because, for you Great Wall is same as land fill.–

dear idiot thats how people do build big walls.

—Still, GW is longest man made structure.–

no you idiot thats still a trans-siberian railway. but most long man made Structure is the international comunication cable network.

–Western historians claims that China was one of strongest countries until 18th century.–

    never saw such one.

—As I’ve been only in Beijing and Shanghai, I cannot claim that GW is ubiquitous in Taiwan or SF chinatown (which is not in China).—

whahahahaha. guys, he doesnt know what “the great wall restaurant” is!

—When I said “almost national emblem”, I didn’t said “a national emblem”. I read some stories and legends about Great Wall erection. Even the famous one about bones in mortar.–

its not erection it building you dumb loser.

—-There’s also a reason why I put “barbarians” and “civilized/civilization” under quotes. Not to make racist comments, but to illustrate views of people in that time. For Greeks, Persians was barbarians among others. For Romans, Carthaginians. For Chinese, nomadic tribes on the north weren’t “civilized”.—

greeks, persians and romans gived a shit about “civilized”. all lived in different cultures where the relligion was in a first place.

    –Is this also a legend?–

no, but this is not a “historical purpose was to defend China” either you idiot.

    • What the hack, I just must admit you are right. I’m just not enough civilized to write “idiot” for every argument you made. Especially in anonymity of internet.

It is easy for you, aren’t? Hey, you made a good points, gave good arguments. Sometimes, you just didn’t read what I wrote, but you still tries to offend me, calling me idiot and turning my words inside out.

You just know how to make friends.

      • the great yellow master race

yes.. im still angry because you ignore that history is like a banger it has two sites and you ignored that one wich does play most important role in chiese thinking and meaning.

Tourists sleep there because locals give them a choice or force them to do it. locals are forced to do this because its impossible to build cheap hotels and camping places and because local oligarchs will take those places and hotels into own corrupt hands.

so do you missunderstand the fantasies wrote by chinese nazis and propaganda arseholes for reality and history. you do not question yourself if it were the truth or just “we proud overlords build this wall to keep our blood clean from dirty barbars living in the north” shit.

        • I don’t try to ignore history, as you think. I spent half a day, looking over internet to check were you right or not. I never had a problem to say I’m wrong, but I have problem when someone twists my words and trying to offend me. You last comment proved me that (beside your history knowledge and orating skills ) one can have decent talk with you.

Sleeping on GW is ultimately cool. I would like to do that. But, for me, personally, sleeping on GW (not in accommodation) is offensive to Chinese people. You said that millions suffered while Wall was building. Drinking and sleeping is not good way to show condolence to that people. By telling me that, I have more appreciation to builders, an ordinary people that build that Wall.

In Europe, many fortifications are build with great pain from ordinary people. In my country (Serbia) there’s at least 3 structures that was remembered in legends by hardship during construction. Those places are of great historical importance for us, and none sleeps there. Although, it would be cool.

I never justified calling Mongols, Jurchen/Manchus or any other people “barbarians”. Fact is that they were called like that. Germans had same sentiments toward Slavic people. They spoke about us as “barbarian from south”. I cannot justify calling any people “barbarians”. We witnessed situations that many crimes were made in the name of “civilization”. Crimes are crimes, no matter who made it.

The statement about protection from the north can be found not just in history book I have (Outline history of China), but all over the net. It had war defensive purpose, I never said to “keep blood clean”. How I see it, Wall kept northern tribes from not stealing hard earned goods of ordinary people (and gold from those less ordinary).

What I also checked is that total length of roman limes was about 5000km, which is a lot, in deed, but not all of that was wall. Slavery in ancient Egypt was very complex category, as their role in old Egypt is uncertain… Workers on pyramids were provided shelters, tax lowering, food, they didn’t own a land and were subjected to lords, temples or state. You know the story. Ancient Greeks claimed that pyramids were made by slavery labor, but, correct me if I’m wrong, Old Greeks was ignorant for other countries than theirs.

I checked for Trans-Sibir railway. It is longer than GW, but those two things cannot be compared, at least due the man power involved.

Instead calling me idiot, it is better for me if you provide links that I can check.

          • the great yellow master race

            whahahaha.. sure… you idiot!

          • What a looser you are! Calling Uself “the great yellow master race”! U hate being Chinese in west. You are smaller than rest, U have small d**k. I bet everyone make a joke with U, stupid cunt. You are able to write short history of China in 4444 characters and what else?

I bet when you make a mistake, you scare to the death, ‘cos U R not able to admit mistake, U know. UR afraid that U will lose UR 2 bucks a day job in some dirty restaurant.

First learn how to talk with civ people, then open your mouth, dork.

  21. Okay, people are trying to make some valid (if less than precise) historical point here. Right around the world it would be hard to find a large structure which was not built by some type of slave labour. Aztecs, Incas, St Petersburg. Without Chinese labour the US would not have the Union Pacific. The Qin dynasty who built the GW were the Pol Pots of their day. Whatever, I will stick with Ben Hur and Cleopatra for my readings of ancient history.

  22. Whats the big deal? The wall is thousands of k’s long. . . they are just sleeping on one part. They will leave it clean you can be sure.

Its a historical site you can be sure but its also nature outside.

How is this “insult to chinese people”? Too sensitive.

  23. Doesn’t China still have slaves anyway? So what let them do what they want, they aren’t worth being paid anyway.

Point is, whenever something “foreign” happens in China its a massive uprising. This is Marxism and Despotism at its best. Support a common enemy to take the focus off the internal strife. Have you ever noticed that NOTHING in China is easy. From getting off a subway with no air con in 40 degree heat, to have to do a useless bag check getting on the subway by a 19 year old Gansu peasant. To trying to line up anywhere knowing that someone is going to try to cut in front of you?

There’s a reason, that reason is to make you focus on other things BESIDES the fact that this country’s leadership siphons off all of the resources for personal gain whilst building themselves luxury apartments that the rest of us can’t buy (I’m white, with a nice salary and I can’t even think of buying a home here). Let me rephrase that, I don’t think spending 250K USD to buy an apartment in a cramped hot area surrouned by cadres who still spit throw seeds, or try to run over my kids (see previous post) is a good investment.

Keeping the locals focused on “caucasoids” (that is the new hot button in China Daily) is the way to keep them from realizing that Wang their boss just walked off with everyone’s pension for a weekend in Macau.

    • “Point is, whenever something “foreign” happens in China its a massive uprising. This is Marxism and Despotism at its best. Support a common enemy to take the focus off the internal strife. Geez, I feel exactly the same way….I really feel like they try to put a lot of focus on JAPAN during WW2 to distract the Chinese people from Mao and his party did to China and the Chinese people.

Chinese people protested the historical revisionism of Japanese Textbooks (fair enough, I think Japan needs to be accountable for the atrocities they committed during WW2) but…..dude….look at their history textbooks.

  24. maintaining a wall that great doesn’t come cheap i suppose. but to sleep along the walls under the night skies, would be an opportunity not to be missed. i wouldn’t mind doing it myself but i’m a hotel sorted guy. so i’ll pass =D
ppl should just stop bitchin bout stupid sh#t

  25. Not surprising, but certainly not unique to westerners. You should see the mess rich chinese/hong kong tourists make when they visit national parks in the United States.

  26. To all the Chinese who are angry about this incident – wake up to reality. %0 years ago your government declared the Great Wall China’s national embarassment and let the wall slip into disrepair. Only after they saw the value of increased tourism did your government start to declare it a national treasure and begin reconstruction efforts. That is why most foreigners hate Chinese people. Its not because your strong or weak, smart or stupid, rich or poor . . . its because you do not think for yorselves, and after years of being spoon fed unabashed nationalism to stave off any thoughts of blaming your own government for your problems, you latch onto ridiculous stories such as this and sing in unison your overplayed “you have disrespected the Chinese people” symphony. IF CCTV 9 declared that it was recently discovered that nearly all of the people in southern China were not really of Han descent, the government could convince you it was disrespectful and you would go to war with yourselves.

  27. I’ve camped near the greatwall. I’ve even taken a piece of it home with me. I wanna do it again. If anyone is up for this in September, let me know!

  28. Chinese are always over-reactive on everything …

  29. OMG! THe manager needs to be prosecuted for damaging national treasure! In this case more to international treasure!

  30. When I go to China I follow the saying “Ru xiang sui su” (入乡随俗) which means, “When in a village follow the local custom”. So when I went to the Great Wall I let my kids shit on the path, I spat on the floor and I scratched my name on the wall. And I left my rubbish everywhere except in the bin.

  31. “Ugh…too shameless…what country are they from??? I too want to go to their country to ruin their environment/surroundings!!!”

um don’t they know they ARE already destroying the whole world’s environment???? And anyone who has been to China town can tell you how dirty and smelly that place is.

    SNOOGANS

  32. Have you ever been to Emei Shan in Sichuan, one of the “Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China”?

It is littered with rubbish! Empty plastic bottles, candy wrappings, tissue paper, you name it. Everywhere! It really spoilt the trip, I tell you!

And I didn’t meet one single gweilo on the trek from the foot of the mountain to the summit and back down, so these poorly educated foreigners sleeping on the Great Wall (shame on them!) have evidently learnt from the Chinese how to treat Chinese cultural treasures!

  33. Progress is a comfortable disease and life is a disturbing moment of suffering surrounded by eternal indifference and peace. Humanity is like a cancer on the earth, consuming what it can to survive so it can feel as good as it can before it fades into oblivion. I am so disgusted beyond amusement by the narcissistic selfishness of cultural ignorance from the masses of the mindless that plague this poor planet. And ChinaSmack sucks too. So crass and pathetic with its hip coolness toward degradation. I feel ashamed to be alive. It is so embarrassing. What other absurdities lie hidden elsewhere in the universe?

    • Deep ecology existentialism……give us a break. You must have trouble getting out of bed in the morning. What sort of nonsense have you been reading. Bibliography please!!!! Okay, there are some obnoxious extremes on this site, but it is a good forum.

  34. Puleazzzzzzzzzzzzzze get off your nationalist high horses & put the blame squarely on the Jinshanling management company who marketed & made money booking this sleep over on the wall.

I’m an American who loves China & have been visiting here for close to 20 years, but I can’t believe some of these mindless comments about the “evil foreigners”. You guys are much smarter than this.

  35. Chinese are fucking up half of the world and now they’re getting pissed off cause some “foreigners” are campiomg on a brick wall in the middle of nowhere – get real you idiots!

  36. I’m wandering if Chinese netizens are hypocrits or stupid?

A search for “Hiking Great Wall” on google returns almost one million links. The first ones are all Chinese travel agency proposing “Great Wall Hiking Tours”…

  37. It is easy to complain about the degradation of the wall, but what action do you take? Remote sections of the wall are systematically torn apart for their bricks and instead of doing something to help protect the wall you just cry about how evil foreigners are. So why don’t you shutup..get off your computer and actually do something?

  38. Just because you put two pictures together, doesn’t mean they are related. I can get a picture of “No Eating” from one location and combine it with a picture of a fat person eating a twinkie on his couch. Such subtle, twisted facts.

  39. I think Chinese tend to be sanctimonious little assholes as a whole, but in this case I agree with the hypocrite bastards. I think this is wrong and fucked-up. Then again the foreigners probably signed up and paid for this experience with absolutely no idea that they would be doing anything “wrong”, so in the end the blame falls on selfish Chinese trash who organize and allow these “tours”, caring about their own profit above all else. Which pretty much sums up the reason for most of the country’s problems.

  40. Some Chinese person replied that foreigners were having group sex on the wall. I wonder if this is true.

Yup, that’s right. I read the entire article and all I can think about is the group sex.
    :)

  41. LOL.. it pretty much a known fact that the general netizen population are either retarded, an asshole, or both. So I’m not that surprised about the comments above.

When I was in China, I saw people littering everywhere. No one treats public places with any respect. The same goes on how they treat people. To guest they can be the best host, but to strangers they don’t give a shit. If it was Chinese people sleeping there, the place would be a fucking mess. Even some of the more intelligent comments above stated that.

Well.. I guess it does help provide some poor migrants with work.. cleaning up other people’s trash.

And lastly… group sex on the wall? Sounds fun, I should bring some pretty local girls there next time. ^_-

    • Panda wrote, “When I was in China, I saw people littering everywhere. No one treats public places with any respect. The same goes on how they treat people. To guest they can be the best host, but to strangers they don’t give a shit.”

And I totally agree! Chinese people have NO RESPECT for public places or other people (unless money is somehow involved).

It’s a very rude and selfish culture.

  42. we need the barbarians to come back on their horses and start attacking the walls again

  43. low class back packers.. lack of respect and discipline..

maybe they should go back to where they come from..

  44. Doesn’t really matter if the people camping on the Great Wall were foreigners or Chinese. The fact that most part of Chinese people didn’t adopt an evident environmental friendly behaviour yet in everyday life doesn’t justify people coming from abroad to forget about good habits they normally adopt in their coutry of origin. And the fact that the wall is huge doesn’t mean that people is actually allowed to ruin ‘just a little part of it’. It’s an historical site – with good and bad cultural implications, but still something that must be preserved for the generations to come. Local authorities and tour operators should be the first part interested in preserving such a unique monument that insure the country constant incomes and is actually able to give an occupation to hundreds of local people.

  45. Camping is fine if they pack up and leave the area clean. But I really doubt they would do that. Just look at those plastic bottles on the wall.

  46. I am a foreigner living in China for the past 8 years.
Chinese let foreigners get away with more.
Everything’s is allowed in China if you have money

  47. There are so many issues to get in to on this one. I have been living in China for quite some time and am from Canada.

First of all, the people to blame for this is everyone. From the people taking the money to the foreigners and Chinese camping on the wall. If Chinese people don’t like that, then they need to take it up with their government to enforce the laws.

Ignorance lies in all countries and in everyone, lord knows China certainly has its own share.

And please use more professional journalism next time. ‘Foreigners’ only include the world population minus 1.3 billion people. Being so vague is just bad journalism, and try not to leave out the fact that Chinese also camp on the Great Wall. Try questioning the people you are taking pictures of.

Don’t hate, educate! And learn laws and culture before you go somewhere, damn it!

  48. Chinese people is strange, in one hand they try to exploit all their heritages to grab moneys from foreign tourist and in other hand they just love to criticize foreigners if they do anything in their own way.
I believe these tourist will not leave any trash on the great wall, take better care than any other Chinese people.
So, WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL???

  49. how could they do that?
