Foreigners Camping On The Great Wall, Chinese Reactions

From NetEase:

Angry! Foreigners eating, drinking, shitting, pissing, sleeping on the Great Wall!

On the night of August 3, about one hundred foreign tourists stayed overnight on the Great Wall. Just their tents and sleeping bags alone required a truck to transport up the mountain, and the Jinshanling management granted clearance pretending to be ignorant. Looks like “Protecting the Great Wall and tourism environment” is not worth mentioning next to colorful cash.

What more, this kind of thing happened 2 just days after a newspaper reporter’s investigative report on the problem of illegal overnight stays on the Great Wall! These people cannot wait to earn money! It is evident that the management and individual bosses are in collusion with each other like snakes and rats living together in a nest!

Beginning from 2003, there have been people who have built “hotels” for overnight tourists, renting sleeping bags to foreign tourists at a price of 400-500 yuan per person. This reporter learned from Luanping County Great Wall management that people were once allowed to stay overnight on the Great Wall, but must pay 100 yuan overnight stay fee and 50 yuan entrance fee, but now tourists staying overnight on the Great Wall is no longer allowed. Yet there are still foreign tourists living on the Great Wall.

Many of those coming to the 4A-level Jinshanling Great Wall scenic area are foreign tourists. After arriving at Jinshanling Great Wall, there are people on the sides hawking sleeping bags for personal profit. Jinshanling Great Wall itself is a lightning area, and previously here there have been incidents of tourists being struck by lightning! When I think of the British William-Lindsay leading a group of foreigners picking up trash on this portion of the Great Wall, doing everything to protect the Great Wall for 20 years, I don’t know whose face [foreigners or Chinese] should be red…

Comments from Tianya:

百花盛开2009:

Sad, many of China’s scenic spots are all ruined, with the managers only collecting money, not managing/taking care of them.

joechim:

Foreigners’ characters are really low.
Embarrassing themselves all the way here to China.

Jerry44122:

Instead of taking care and protecting our cultural heritage, they have taken it away to make money.

123yjz123:

Once the Great Wall, now the Money Wall.

284792953:

I need to go see the Great Wall soon, otherwise I might not have the chance later.

yetan1:

Too breathtaking. I don’t think this kind of tourism should be allowed, at most let tourists look from the side or have helicopter tours, or even a cable car would work.

阿里大牙:

Don’t blame the foreigners, they paid money, they are consumers. Don’t we all say everyday that we must protected the lawful rights and interests of consumers?

归云轩:

I do not think we can blame this on “laowai” having poor characters.
There are a lot of bastards amongst our country’s people too.

ddww2008:

Foreigners camping on the Great Wall is said to be sullying beauty!
Then what is our countrymen carving “到此一游” ["visited here"] on the bricks???

谁吃瓜子皮:

I haven’t been to the Great Wall yet, and dammit, seeing this I don’t want to go anymore! And good Chinese?! If I go and see those bastard “laowai” eating, drinking, shitting, pissing, sleeping on the Great Wall without giving them a beating, then I would not be a good Chinese person! Those who do not go to the Great Wall are not good Chinese, but those who go and do not flatten those foreigners who insult the Great Wall are truly not good Chinese!

Comments from NetEase:

harvvy:

At least foreigners won’t make a complete mess of the environment, as I believe they will take their trash with them.

ssshs:

Sigh, no matter what you say, it is still a world wonder. NND, unscrupulous tourist managers and foreigners.

liuchun79746:

All day talking about how our countrymen’s characters aren’t high when abroad, tmd, I have rarely met any “laowai” with high characters in China!

lichengwei_5:

There is nothing that can be done, this thing was made public a long time ago. There has even been group sex on the Great Wall, so other than collecting money, do the managers [of the Great Wall] know how to do anything else?

月泮湾:

Angry, unscrupulous managers.
Fortunately, at least it isn’t Chinese people sleeping on there, otherwise, there would be even more garbage to pick up.

xinxinxiu:

I see a sequence, not trash…

鸿亿五金厂:

LZ, do you know? “Camping is not allowed on the Great Wall” was written for us Chinese people only!!!

viping-963:

What can you do? They are foreigners, they are “international friends”, so we must wait on them as if they were our ancestors.

hrblgql:

Sigh! When we ourselves become clean, self-disciplined, then “laowai” will also be self-disciplined. Who let you go piss and shit in front of other peoples’ front doors?

jialanbaobei:

Ugh…too shameless…what country are they from??? I too want to go to their country to ruin their environment/surroundings!!!

Should people be allowed to camp on the Great Wall?

  1. It’s not about being foreign and literally getting away with murder, it’s about money or status, and the size of your wallet, if you have a car it means you can park and drive on the pavement, you can jump red lights and force cyclists of the road, if you have money you can demand the best seats in a restaurant, speak loudly and spit all your food on the floor for the workers to clean up later with complete disregard to others. Do the Chinese critisise the Chinese for camping up there, no, especially if they are rich, why, because it’s accepted, but if the bad laowai does, then all Chinese must critisise them for all the bad evil things they do, after all they are outsiders and know nothing about Chinese culture or history, “it’s just the way it is in China” using culture as a bad excuse for bad behavior.

  2. Well, its not a good scene to have someone out foreigners in their boxer shorts and doing their morning routines.

I don’t think most foreigners or tourists would sleep on the Great Wall. Its only a few who are adventurous and the outdoor type who wants to experience the great outdoors on the wall itself. Maybe it will give another angle to appreciate China’s magnificent man-made engineering feat and actually generate more international interest about it.

More tourist dollars coming in should mean more money for maintenance if it wasn’t for opportunists.

  3. Has this section of the wall not been rebuilt anyway? Hardly an original section of the wall!! Looks about as original as xintiandi in Shanghai…. If you have not been there you are not a real han, the second trip is for idiots. Let them have it…

  4. http://www.desopilant.com/fzqqregerh878q5/toilettes.jpg

we understand better with this picture, then after 4 or 5 km you must face to this :

    http://www.dinosoria.com/inventions/toilettes.jpg

  5. Um, why is there “pissing and shiting” in the headline? It’s clearly a very tidy campsite. Oh well, Chinese love to shout at foreigners. They rip off all our culture and technology and act as if all we do is ruin things for them… sigh…

Typical Chinese reaction. Here are some foreigners, not breaking anything, not polluting, not making a mess, so let’s “beat” them for appreciating a cultural landscape. Wow, that makes a lot of sense.

Chinese are so xenophobic and even more hypocritical. Go to a natural wonder like Jiuzhaigou and you’ll see Chinese littering, pitching cigarette butts and making a cheesy carnival of it all over the place. They don’t know how to act in a dignified, respectful manner at all.

What’s more, in the old alley houses next to my house I walk back home and see people pissing on the street and even the walls of their own houses!

    • Well, I think these peole after climbing the Wall and actually spending the night there could possibly have felt the need to urinate at least when woke up, don’t you think so? Maybe someone walked few miles to reach the closest toilet, someone may have not. Doesn’t sound completely impossible to me as scenario.

  6. That is not even the real Great Wall – it’s rebuilt. The Chinese destroyed their Great Wall so why do they care if foreigners camp on their fake wall?

  7. I’m an American psychologist currently living in China and in truth after what I’ve seen around the world no one, except maybe Gandhi, or mother Teresa, can point the finger of blame without being a hypocrite… Chinese, American, Russian, German, French, and British alike…We’re all human and we all exploit our environment and the people around us.. It’s human nature to seek survival as comfortably as possible. Some employ self-control, while others don’t (but deep inside our genes we are all selfish when it comes to survival and motives). To point the finger at “laowai” is going overboard. I think in truth we all know that the people who “sold the tickets and sleeping bags” were the main culprits here..And even though the foreigners were guilty and probably knew better, the world today teaches us that: “It’s okay, cause everyone else is doing it.” Please.. Let’s get over our pride and egos just for a moment and for once see the world as it really is…

  8. God just like many things the media have put a twist on this by sticking “Foreign” infront of the “People Sleeping on the Great Wall”.

I presonally have not done it, but I’ve seen plenty of Chinese people sleeping on the Great Wall.

  9. Last time I was at the Great Wall in April 2007, there were Chinese tourists urinating in the guard towers. All the guard towers close to the main entrance at Badaling reek like urine.

Maybe I foreigners shouldn’t be camping on the Great Wall, but Chinese tourists shouldn’t be urinating in the guard towers either.

  10. Damn foreigners and damn locals. The Great Wall should be mine and mine alone. GET OFF MY WALL!!!

  11. quite honestly, i think many of the people here are commenting from their own bias. If you haven’t noticed, China is the world’s largest 3rd world country. It’s understandable that the some Chinese people look for ways to make a profit and make money to live. There are also many Chinese people who are polite, respectful and not greedy. They’re going through an industrial revolution many western countries have already gone through. isn’t this just part of the process?

this article isn’t about racism, prejudice or stereotyping. but its amazing what a simple article can show about what people think.

and even though my comment may contain bias, i just don’t think that people should be generalizing a group of people based on this article. i dont think this article really proves whether or not chinese people are rude, dirty; nor does it prove that foreigners are rude and whatever negative comments have been going on about both.

  12. Why the fuck would anyone want to stay overnight at the great wall? Its cold, there are rarely bathrooms around and underneath the wall are the dead bodies of the builders!

  13. rules are rules and if you can’t keep it, you will get ass kicked!

speaking about tourist… you have tourists that are polite and follow the rules and you have shit tourists that are always try to profit things without paying and thinking “no problem because i will be once here”

Great wall is a historical monument, so you can not sleep, eat and shit. It is normal to get arrested or get a fine. So If i try this in Amsterdam City in front of the palace, the police will give me a fine of 50 euro’s. So should I be pissed that Dutch people discriminate me?

It’s about principles so, don’t post about racisme and that kind of nonsense. Those tourists are just doing for fun but should be punished by this unrespectful behavior.

  14. This story is too much. By far my favorite. The headline and the story were designed to make foreigners look like animals but 90% of the comments are trash talking the dirty Chinese people and their lack of manners, hygeine, etc. I bet the author is sorry for posting such a stupid story because I think it kinda backfired.

  15. Agree with Michael, but that how truth is revealed … by public discussion … bias or not it’s human nature to defend themselve when their pride’s being challenged. So chill out, camp on Great Wall or write Graffiti in La Louvre if you can, just be responsible to your own action.

  16. They should have the fucking foreigners that act like stupid asses cleaning the Great Wall with a tooth brush. Damn fuckers, what do they think ? They can do what they want in China ?

  17. ATLEAST THEY ARE NOT SPITTING, GAWKING OR CHUCKING RUBBISH EVERYWHERE LIKE MANY CHING CHAO TOURISTS DO.

  18. China took the all kind of fees from those overnight campers the night before and then called her customers names on the following morning. Nice!

  19. I love how Chinese here show their lack of self-awareness and criticize foreigners’ manners. China leads the world in people spitting, pissing on the street, smoking in others’ faces, cheating, yelling, rushing into elevators or trains without waiting for others to exit, never covering their mouths when coughing or sneezing, standing up in airplanes when the seat belt light is on, and so on. Chinese were recently voted rudest travelers in the world.

  20. At least, we don’t throw our garbage on the wall like Chinese, we collect them in a bag.
Also, we don’t steal the stones to build our house, like Chinese.
So before criticizing, please think all of you Chinese people who use the windows of your car as if the ousite was a giant bin

  21. You morons. A hundred ppl sleeping and eating and littering on the wall does way less damage to it than a single bush growing on it. It may look “natural” but all kind of roots going into the wall destroys it by making cracks and little holes. While humans on the wall are just polishing the surface.

And moreover, these people visit only popular spots of the wall, while the rest part (95% probably) of the wall is left to be destroyed by forests and the rest of nature.
But of course majority of those who say that sleeping is bad for the wall, probably are just jealous. And most likely never been to the parts of the wall which is not a touristic spot.

  22. Now wait a second. So many tours are being offered to sleep on the great wall, how can you blame the foreignors doing it? Most foreigners who camp overnight on the great wall have PAID a tourism agency to guide them for a days walk and overnight sleep! There is no way this is a foreignors fault, blame yourselves for once! How could the foreignor KNOW if their tour guide (a Chinese National) tells them they can?

I agree that foreign trash (laowais as you call them) tend to have a bad influence on China, but not all of us are here to spoil your great country! I’ve been here over 2 and a half years, I’m planning on staying another 4-6 because I’m learning so much here! But damn is it hard when we are blamed all the time for the stupidity of others! Give us a break!

And that only 3 out of the hundreds out there!

  23. I’m a foreigner and was thinking about doing a sleep over on the Wall. But please don’t assume I’m bad, I’m booking through a tour group and until I saw this didn’t know it wasn’t allowed.

Of course I would respect the country I’m visiting as I am your guest, and I will not be sleeping on the wall.

  24. It really is hard to fathom how stupid Chinese people can be sometimes, but then if I sit back and think, New Yorkers can be equally moronic at times.

The wall has been torn to pieces for centuries by local Chinese. Also in these photos there is nothing damaging being done to the wall.

In addition, in these photos we see liter everywhere, but the people haven’t left yet. As a Chinese person I can understand this may bother you, since most Chinese don’t seem to understand what those strange little boxes by the side of the road all around the city are (trash cans!). Westerns seem to be the only people who don’t litter in China.

Many western countries have a camping culture with immense respect for the natural environment and many foreigners would be more likely to pick up someone else’s garbage than leave their own lying around.

The saddest part of this post is how willing Chinese people are to hate foreigners, for no good reason.

  25. Yarr ,all those nasty laowai, shiting, pissing ,farting , sleeping , having sex, leaving rubbish, ever where, having a complete lack of respect for all things chinese, HELLO PLANET EARTH?,a small speck of nothing, in the infinity of space?.

  26. if u chinese people are not clean with your own enviroment u expect foriegners to come and teach u how to be clean.so when u go to rome do what the romans do .beside that there are also chinese people on the picture, so it shouldn’t be as if it’s only foriegners. where were the authorities? so u don’t blame the foriegners.u blame your fellow country men for their carelessness.

  27. apparently no one bothered to look closely at the pictures… have a closer look and notice that there are also Chinese people camping on the wall! so look before you post your ignorance!

  28. I have seen many Chinese adults throwing garbage everywhere, and allowing their children to also throw garbage and defecate and urinate in many public places in China. Many Chinese men also find it acceptable to urinate alongside their cars in the city. It is very disturbing. Let’s not even begin to discuss the habit of spitting. But these bad habits are not true of all Chinese people. Many foreigners, mostly young foreigners, are very rude during their time in China. Many are not. I do not agree with anyone camping at the Great Wall. It is a question of how China decides to protect its own cultural heritage. These young foreigners should not be allowed to break the rules. People are all of the same DNA. The world is a very small place. We should not be so racist or prejudiced against foreigners or Chinese. We should not advocate violence against anyone. We should try to enforce our rules to maintain a civil society. Every country, every nationality, has its share of good people and bad people. This is the way of the world.

  29. 25 yrs ago I lived near a local interest called “the big rock” left in place from an ancient glacier. It attracted climbers and today, it’s a pile of rubble. No respect was shown for a truly unique object. It is truly sad – that people are slowly destroying such an ancient wonder in China’s history.

  30. Obsolutely, freaking not! Go camp in the woods and hollows and be low impact as well. The Great Wall is an edifice of transport and defense. Walk and ponder, and recognize that the Great Wall is not a bunk bed.

  31. Arrogant assholes. Think they run the world and are entitled to everything in it.

  32. Put them in Ming Dynasty uniforms and make them guard the wall under Chinese officers for 5 years, then see if they really want to stay there.

  33. Let the red knife in and the white knife out.

  34. If Chinese managers would not tell them they can camp on the wall they wouldn’t. But if they know they shouldn’t aresst them as you would Chinese people. I am an American living in China married to a wonderful Chinese woman. I respect China and it’s ways as everyone should.

  35. You guys trash your own streets & neigborhoods, spitting and litering everywhere, yet you get bent out of shpe over some laowai camping on the Great Wall??? WTF!

  36. This is the first time I have ever been in the position to feel the need to defend hipster scum. When I went to the great wall last year, the first thing I noticed were all the Chinese pissing and shitting everywhere. The guard towers or whatever they are that are spaced a few meters apart all along the wall had about six Chinese men pissing in every single one I passed through, the stink of urine in each one was unbelievable. Then they have these little blocked off exits, stairways that go down to nowhere, each one completely full of human feces. There was an old Chinese guy squatting down there taking a shit whilst reading a newspaper without a care in the world about all the early morning tourists walking by up above. Shitting, pissing, and spitting on their own wall, then complain about a few foreign dumbasses who want to sleep on it? I just don’t know what to say. China, I am disappoint!

  37. The tourists in those photos PAID for a tour from a Chinese business man and were allowed to sleep on the wall as far as they were concerned. Considering the amount of tourism on the wall it is easy to see why they don’t understand Chinese feelings about sleeping on the wall. Where the tourist shit is the irresponsibility of the tour company they were with. As for the person that threatened violence against the tourists, get a life. Finally to the person who said he didn’t want to go to the wall because people have slept on it, are you fucking crazy, the wall is estimated to be around 8000 km long, you honestly think the whole wall is ruined now. With out the money provided from tourism its likely that the wall could not be maintained and restored the way it has been though the years. Tourism is good for the wall and it is the Chinese peoples responsibility to police and educate foreigners who visit the wall. Not many people would be interested in the wall if only helicopter and gondler tours were available. How allot of people have talked on this page is both embarrassing and stupid.

  38. maybe sarcasm involved… hopefully
