Many netizens question the usefulness of building a huge statue when the money could be better spent elsewhere.

300 million? Isn’t it a little too much~

wanjun1985_2:

If Chairman Mao is still alive, he probably wouldn’t approve.

s4742489:

Haha, I’ll take a look, not going to comment, because I’m afraid of being pursued across state lines.

阿诺:

Can somebody tell me, what is the practical use of spending so much tax payer’s money building this kind of thing.

wangjing5818:

Spending huge sums constructing a statue, is it meaningful? Such a massive formalist project, at best it is to paint a good face for the officials, as to gain some so called “political achievements”. Instead invest [money] it toward the building of the national economy in order to do something practical for the common people! If there are really no projects then just build roads, I don’t believe the roads in Hunan are all modernized!

wwwmmm198108:

Today we are still building for his kind of person? The sorrow of humanity!

4726592:

What is the point of making this…waste of money…

xiecheng-zp:

Support great man.

nongzhenlin:

Support! Forever remember Chairman Mao’s thought.

qingchenghai:

Although we respect and love our founding father, but isn’t this a waste of money and people’s labor? Is it that some people once again pocketed the wealth for themselves! China always pursue things in vanity, I think even if our great leader knew about this matter, he will certainly be angry!

xuncai2008:

Classic case of the cult of personality..

魏西:

I’m afraid of saying anything.

wycf66:

Everybody work hard, maybe many years from now, your head sculpture will also be like this.

lij200710:

Even America have sculptures of great persons, why can’t China have them? Sore mentality!

So stupid, have so much excess money building a head sculpture, why not use it to aid the disaster areas.

路边晒太阳的猫:

Chairman Mao was after all a great man, what is the big deal about spending 300 million constructing a head sculpture, why his successors waste more than 3 billion every year. Where are their contribution? How much do they worth?

匿名人士833832:

Hunan people are the highest grade of SB.

月落之蓝:

Motherfucker, have so much money why not build some houses for poor people to live instead.

猪梓儿:

300 million!? How much of it will be corrupted away~

sxwa111:

Remembrance of Chairman Mao is good, but using money off the working people is not good.

I think it is worth it.

  1. And again for the win! 1st to post

mao zedong head? wtf man wtf, the most praised old man pedo in modern history…

  2. I could see some foreigners going there for the kitsch value. Taking pictures picking MZD’s nose, or blowing farts in his face. The only people who would legitimately go there to pay respects would be the uneducated taxi drivers with pictures of Mao hanging from their mirrors.

  3. the money could always be better spent elsewhere.

  4. So ShanZhai… They are trying to copy Mt. Rushmore, but they can’t because they don’t have the skills and tools to curve a face on the side of a mountain. Instead they opt to build it, and it will not be structurally stable and it will probably roll down the hill and wreck havoc on the community.

    • Actually, in China, there are quite a few famous carved face + body Buddha on walls, more like clifts. They were made hundreds of years before Mt. Rushmore.

made since AD 713 … that’s 1212 years before Mount Rushmore, so if they had the skills to make this one 1 thousand years ago, I am sure they still have the skills to make it now (silly Americans, thinking their Mt. Rushmore is the original and historic compared to this. Always over estimating themslves)

  5. How many memorials does this guy need? He didn’t even want the Mausoleum.

  6. History is written by the victors

  7. Yes, ‘history is written by the victors’, not the victims — the more than 30 million people whose death Mao was responsible for. How can a ‘civilized’ people go on celebrating such a butcher of their own people? It would be like the Jews celebrating Hitler.

  8. The golden calf.

  9. What the netizens are really saying is “Why can’t we just take the money for ourselves and forget about the statue.”

  10. I think this could be the coolest thing in China. Do they have a Mao museum in Henan. I think people misunderstood him. I think he is a hero to everyone.

  11. Why does the goverment spend our money on Sichuan earthquake???? And how much money the goverment officers will keep in their own pockets!!!!!!!!

  12. well…

at least some of the netizens seem to have escaped 100% brainwashing…

china will have a mao statue for each of its citizens soon, it seems. i wonder if there are more maos or more buddhas in china…

  13. Mao is responsible of more than dead than Staline or Hitler (around 50 millions). Chinese people will see this “monument” like a commemoration for a gread man,, foreigner like a tyran, perfect nobody will forget.

  14. Oh well, one more to pull down when the nation wakes up to itself I guess (a la Soviet Russia).

  15. 8th worldwonder xD

  16. Still building monuments for this ghastly motherfucker? The Chinese are sooooo last-century.

  17. That’s the ugliest building i have ever seen.

  18. I was going to say “I hope this one looks like him”, but after looking at the poster I guess not.

  19. Might as well just put a big billboard up saying;

    ‘STILL BRAINWASHED’

  20. I still do not thoroughly understand this. If anything, Deng Xiao Ping and Zhou Enlai deserves the highest accolades for bringing China to power. Mao was ideologically revolutionary but made critical blunders which brought China much suffering.

  21. Is there going to be a disco in the top?

    • Yeah, they’re going to be playing Bee Gees on top like when China opened their borders to American pop culture for the first time. Drinks are on Deng.

      • A Communist party, if you will.

        • Don’t go to the party hoping to get laid, Mao might have have scared all the birds away!

          • OHHHH YOU GODS OF IRONY…

In 1958 Mao Zedong declared sparrows an enemy of the state. He had decided that the birds
were the reason for the failure of his agricultural programs and, hence, farmers were given
incentives to kill all they could find.
Amazingly, they succeeded. When tens of millions of peasants go to work, billions of birds can be
killed in a season. And not just sparrows: Photographs in history books show twenty-foot high
stacks of birds of many species—and a lot of happy government officials.
            But nature abhors a vacuum.
The photographs from the next year show a genuine plague of locusts. Without their natural
predators, grasshoppers were able to reproduce to the point they blotted out the sky and
blanketed the fields from one end of China to the other. Estimates are that at least thirty million
people died in the immediate famine and the resulting environmental and societal consequences

  22. It’s being built on Orange Island in the middle of the Xiang river in the middle of Changsha. The whole Island has been rebuilt and landscaped at a great cost. I have heard the (former free to the public ) whole Island from sometime this year will be turned into a tourist attraction with a stiff entry fee. This has nothing to do with propaganda – its all about money. Quite a smart move – local officials will be raking in dough for years to come.

  23. its actually going to be the worlds largest KTV…..with hostesses from every province. So you can see what its like to be Mao for a night.

  24. I will support if they built statue of Sun Yat Sen. But Mao?…crap.

  25. @Overseas Chinese

whats that “oversea chinese”? is it a nation? is it a political party? is it a social club? is it a nationality? is it a mafia? who told you you are the one?

—-I will support if they built statue of Sun Yat Sen. But Mao?…crap.—

    how about you dropping dead..

—-Remembrance of Chairman Mao is good—

never saw Mao being female transvestite and that yong. or are they trying to show his head when he was just chinese nazi hunting manchurians down to cut their pigtails and force them to talk in chinese language?

  26. Professor Sillypants

Wait, wait, wait, wait, WAIT. So you guys know what Mao did to China, right? Why do douche-bags get huge monuments and all I got was this stupid t-shirt? I want a cult following. It would be tight. Like ‘Entourage,’ the witty and cool television series where all of the homies (Zhou Enlai, Lin Biao, Zhu De, Peng Dehuai, Liu Shaoqi) follow around Mao as he goes on his silly adventures. Except in the TV show the lead-man doesn’t kill all of his homies. True.

  27. I’m not gonna comment on it coz i will be put into the jail if i do!:O

  28. cs is broken “test”

  29. How about a Communist Mt. Rushmore: mao, kim jong-il, stalin, and castro? Yeah, keep sculpting. What a great tribute to pathetic men who murder in the millions.

  30. looks like mummy, haha

  31. What a waste of money.

  32. A brilliant tribute by cronies to the man who has made them millionaires off the fortune robbed from millions.

  33. That’s about 6 yuan for each person who died thanks to Mao’s incompetence!
