Zhang Qianqian is from Guizhou, with her parents, living at the local brick factory, and probably also attends school at the local workers’ school.

Upon asking her age, Zhang Qianqian laughed nervously and spoke of other things; I think she might be afraid of involving the “child labor” issue, so I did not keep asking her.

This is Zhang Qianqian’s father. Although his life is hard, and his the burdens he shoulders are not light, there are still some things in life worth a laugh.

Zhang Qianqian’s mother always either unintentionally or intentionally avoids our camera.

From the sight of her drinking water, we can be certain, Zhang Qianqian’s mother is a good worker.

Zhang Qianqian has three siblings, the smallest are twins, and she is the oldest sister.

It is not easy being the oldest sister.

Not only does she have to work, she also must take care of her younger siblings, Zhang Qianqian could be said to be working two things at once.

It can be seen that with regards to taking care of her younger siblings, Zhang Qianqian is very experienced, and very patient.

When working, Zhang Qianqian is always paying attention to the circumstances of her siblings playing by the side.

Life is not easy, young Zhang Qianqian knows this very well. So, she cannot fully enjoy the summer, and must work to reduce her parents’ burdens.

Although she is young, she must be careful while working.

Comments from Mop:

囧样年华:

The children of poor people mature early.

金子般地心:

Hardship is wealth that spent on [developing] a kind of character, so one will not continue having hardships.

狗鸡鸡&:

Hardships is the most valuable wealth of life, jia you Little Qian Qian.

lll6674:

Everyone only knows how to discuss their hardships, but did not see their four children? With life so poverty-stricken, yet still having 4 children, it truly is the more you have the more poor, the more poor the more you have. Whenever this condition can be changed, I believe a big change will happen to their lives.

肜融肜融:

Kao, if you die of poverty, you deserve it for having that many children.

t9d9:

You stand around and talk! Truly without character! That MOP has this kind of people is truly embarrassing!
Do you know how important a son is to rural people!?
A son first is important for his labor;
Second, a son is a strength that guarantees not being bullied in the countryside;
Lastly, a son continues the family line.

There is still a very large very large difference between the countryside and cities!
Even though I too do not approve of people who have so many children, you do not have any reason to say these curses, and you also do not have the right to say!
The child is diligently changing her life, but you are here making noise.
Embarrassing!

战鱼在天:

Jia you!! Milk you will have, bread you will also have!
This is only the darkness before dawn~

jetty777:

Is this in our country?
No!
Impossible!
Our country’s children could not possibly be like this!
This is Africa! Our country is the most river crab country under the sky!

被夜打湿的男人:

Those people with money and and power who lead a life of debauchery and overspend at will, why can’t they help these children? One meal [of their's] can probably take care of one year’s school fees for them. The beauty life has given this child cannot be matched by polish on the surface.

我真是信了你的邪了:

The sadness of reality, I wish the best for this little girl.

Comments from NetEase:

w1g3:

The photography is very professional.

耿爺:

This is only one angle of the rural areas, and there is still plenty of this kind of thing in our country!

wt0019:

Such a cute little girl, so much more beautiful and pretty than those fei zhu liu.

秋水伊人:

Little girl, I really admire you..you are very pretty, and very capable…

However for the parents, if you had one less child, your life would definitely be much easier.

cfk888:

The root cause is poverty, not birth. If people could become rich by not having children, then wouldn’t singles all be rich? Think more about the causes of poverty?

moneyt2003:

Tell me her contact method, I will support her going to school.

daiqianblueq:

Looking at this makes me a little sad, because when I was small I worked at a brick company before also and I also was a little girl at the time. Now, we have passed that difficult period, I really value the blessings of my life right now. The future Little Zhang Qian will also be very remarkable when she enters society! I wish her success!

hhia:

Those talking about child labor have had their heads kicked by donkeys. Without child labor, what would those families with difficult circumstances do? The country has made so many regulations, do they have any use??? In reality, companies also do not want to use child labor, but to those who are hungry, is there anything more important than a job? Is there anyone who can help the hungry live on???

sjw1978:

Only the children of peasants/farms can endure hardships like this!

悄妮子:

A child of poor people. I too learned how to make meals starting when I was only a few years old, and chop firewood, etc. but fortunately, my life is better/good now.

  1. @LOLZ

You took 186 words to describe exactly why China’s policies since 1978 should be considered successful. I have no disagreement with your argument.

If Kai and Ming had used the same argument as you did, this post would only have a few comments.

I argue with Kai, Ming, and their ilk because they’re stupid. They believe by splitting hairs, writing long-winded rambling nonsense, and trying to intimidate opponents by calling them names they can camouflage the problems, short-comings, and errors that China has to deal with.

It’s the stupid dishonesty and sloppy thinking that many Westerners dislike when discussing China with “true believers.”

When in the States, I repeat many of the points you’ve listed when I argue with Americans, however, I use more historical and economic background to make my argument reasonable and logical. Americans are not stupid, they can understand China’s situation when explained in a non-bullshit manner.

The “China lovers” (you mistakenly called me) are China’s worst enemies. They give China a bad name because they turn every question or criticism of China into an “America-is-worse” diatribe. They are nothing more than China’s “useful idiots.” I say that because instead of placing China’s problems in a proper historical context, they cover China’s shit with ice cream and try to serve it to people. Of course, no one wants it. China makes a mistake by embracing them.

Regarding the 1000 rmb silly Ming pays his workers, yes, in the deep countryside, a small family with a farm could survive. However, in Guangzhou, that salary is not enough. Why do you think migrant workers were not returning to Guangzhou after Spring Festival? – wages too low.

China is already losing its “cheap labor” cachet because workers are demanding higher salaries. This is good. This will force China’s production to move up the food chain.

LOLZ: “Pollution? Please. McDonald hamburgers kill a lot more people around the world by giving them heart attacks than pollution.”

Hey! Don’t make yourself sound stupid by dragging out a red herring.

There are 800 McDonald’s restaurants in China — with 200 more in Hong Kong.
In 2006, McDonald’s signed an agreement with the Chinese state oil company, Sinopec, granting it the right to open McDonald’s stores at any of Sinopec’s new and existing gas stations – all 30,000 of them. Who is forcing China to build these McDonald’s?

The environmental pollution caused by weak environmental protection laws and even weaker enforcement of the existing laws has nothing to do with people choosing to buy a Big Mac or not. This is the kind of sloppy thinking I expect from Kai.

With the exception of your McDonald’s bull-shit, I totally agree with you.

    I’m now outta here.

    • “The “China lovers” (you mistakenly called me) are China’s worst enemies. They give China a bad name because they turn every question or criticism of China into an “America-is-worse” diatribe.”

You are not getting this. The people who are “defending” China are mostly made up of people who actually live and work in China as ordinary citizens, not some bullshit expats coming into China, making 5 times what the locals make doing the same essential crap, and think they know better about how to run a country. To you, these people are impeding “progress”, to others, you are trying to force progress on issues which you don’t know about.

“Don’t make yourself sound stupid by dragging out a red herring.”

Red herring? You must be referring to the whole issue of Pollution in China. Do you seriously think that in the country side where hundreds of millions are working their asses off to just put on the table care about Pollution?

You want to stop pollution? China can close down 50% of its factories and lay off 30% of its workers to reduce pollution. Can you then feed all of these people on the streets?

And speaking of Pollution, there is a recent news item stating that Coke and Pepsi plants are the biggest polluters around Beijing area. Maybe China should just ban these plants all together but if they did, do you know who would be screaming the loudest at the Chinese? Clinton on behalf of the US business lobby.

    • You did a word count on his post. shit that made my day.

  2. @Ming

Ming: “I will also give your wife a 1000 yuan to lick my balls.”

Now, why would my wife want to lick your two sesame seeds?

    Hahaha! Hahaha!

  3. Kai, dude just chill out!

I know what kind of peaceful mind, precise judgement, not to mention about your E.T. tallent, you are a great guy, pal! GOD bless you, and May He show you the right path. ( ask! )

  4. Hardship does indeed often build strong character, but a young girl should not be forced into a situation that difficult.

  5. @poor thing

Have you ever heard of a word count program?

Why was LOLZ able to be succinct while Kai is so verbose?

    @ LOLZ

LOLZ: “you [Fred] are trying to force progress on issues which you don’t know about.”

Fred: Yo! Guy you got me all wrong. I’m not trying to “force” anything on anyone. I don’t give a shit how people want to organize their lives. If they want to call it “socialism with Chinese characteristics” or a “harmonious society,” that’s fine with me. This is China and the Chinese people will decide what’s good for them. I’m just an observer who will lend a hand to help if asked. If not, I mind my own business.

LOLZ: “Red herring? You must be referring to the whole issue of Pollution in China.”

Sorry, Mate, I used an expression you may not be familiar with.

Definition: “Red herring (logical fallacy), a deliberate attempt to change a subject or divert an argument.” (There’s a history to this idiom but you can find it for yourself.)

LOLZ: “Pollution? Please. McDonald hamburgers kill a lot more people around the world by giving them heart attacks than pollution.”

Fred: I was making reference to the environmental pollution that the Western countries transferred to China along with their manufacturing plants which kills and sickens millions of Chinese.

You countered by bringing up the issue of eating at McDonald’s.

Hey! Pay attention. Chinese choosing to buy a Big Mac and thus gaining weight is not the same thing as Chinese getting lead poisoning from the air or from cyanide being dumped in the water supply.

Please note the following were headlines from China Daily:

“Lead Poisoning in Shaanxi province Sickens Chinese Kids”
“Air pollution may cause severe drought in north China”
“Villagers protest chemical plant in C. China”
“More than 2,600 ill in China water contamination”
“Air has elevated cancer risk in 600 neighborhoods”

This is what I’m talking about. If you want to bring up health issues, well, that’s another story.

LOLZ: “You want to stop pollution? China can close down 50% of its factories and lay off 30% of its workers to reduce pollution. Can you then feed all of these people on the streets?”

Fred: Don’t be silly. Is this how your logic system frames the question?

LOLZ: “And speaking of Pollution, there is a recent news item stating that Coke and Pepsi plants are the biggest polluters around Beijing area. Maybe China should just ban these plants all together but if they did, do you know who would be screaming the loudest at the Chinese? Clinton on behalf of the US business lobby.”

Fred: If it makes you feel any better, tell Chinese not to eat at McDonald’s or drink Coke or Pepsi.

LOLZ, I am not against China or Chinese, my family is Chinese. What I am against are stupid, asinine arguments like the ones you, Kai, and Ming (who-pays-1000-rmb-to-have-his-ball-licked) present. It makes Chinese look ridiculous as if they have no reasoning ability.

Instead of looking for boogymen like “Clinton” and the “US business lobby,” try finding green energy solutions for China’s industries. This is what I’m doing.

  6. wow…look at her manly muscles! Lol

  7. This is not a thing to be mocked about. This poor girl does this job for her life. I mean, at her age, she supposedly studying at school to brighten and pave her way to future.

Seriously, why don’t your government take any action for this issue? I believe there are lot of children and families that have same situation as her.

China as far as I know is rich from many trade surpluses. Maybe some of that can be allocated to these poor fellas.

I am not a mainland Chinese by myself yet I appaled by this condition.

  8. Fred you are the only logical person on this forum. I especially love LOLZ’s post about how the Chinese government can’t be cruel and oppressive because it has popular support, which was gained by increasing the standard of living – providing cheap products and electrical gadgets. A child rapist can give a kid a lollipop and she will be convinced he’s a good man and follow him to her fate. It doesn’t make the rapist legit. It is true that many people support the current government, but it is not by choice. For it to be by choice, Kai, people must first have the freedom to choose. If I could only buy vanilla ice cream because that was all the store sold, I would probably believe or convince myself to believe that vanilla was the best flavor in the world. I could probably even convince myself that I hate chocolate ice cream. But, it still doesn’t mean I choose to buy the vanilla. Sometime, with people like Kai and others, who get lost in their own thoughts at times, more simple anaolgies would suffice to bear light on the current situation. You cannot say the Chinese choose this way of life, or even choose it by inaction. To put it simply, why is the Chinese government mandating all computers bought, both foreign and domestic made, to include preinstalled spyware and tracking programs? Is it for the safety of the Chinese people? or is it for the safety of the Chinese government? Perhaps, the government wants to make sure no one finds out you can buy chocolate ice cream somewhere else. No one is trying to bash the Chinese as an ethnicity. What most foreigners are trying to do with their posts, occassionally to harshly, is point out that without true choice and without the education to make informed decisions, you must blame the government for the current state of China’s problems. I personally am offended that anyone would justify the abuses of power because more people have refrigerators and mobile phones now than they did in the past. I feel – listen up, Ming, I’m about to bash the Americans now – that the Chinese learned something from the American government . . . if you keep people working longer in an attempt to get more and more money, and fill in the few hours of free time with mindless entertainment like TV, video games, etc, – people will be less likely to care about or notice what is going on around them. They will be more likely to believe it is someone else’s job. And Ming, with the intelligence level you have presented, I am shocked your factory is still progiting and in business, unless, ofcourse, your getting kickbacks from officials for supplying prostitutes from the South (even though it is illegal) that i see advertised on massage billboards on busy streets in the heart of Beijing where women walk children past in strollers and grandparents walk hand in hand with their grandchildren. Let go of your pride, there are glaring problems cause by the ignorance and fear of the Chinese people to speak out. And both of those factors are caused by the government which hopes to perpetuate it. If the appeasers can’t see that basic fact, there is nothing we can do to help them, Fred.

  9. @cmfeirs

    More quotes from Ming (who-pays-1000-rmb-to-have-his-ball-licked)

Ming: “Fred, When China buy out your country, I promised to give you a 1000 yuan job as a cleaner. I will also give your wife a 1000 yuan to lick my balls.”

Ming: “I got some kitchen and cleaner job that pays 1000 yuan each. I would love to hire some white folks to do these dirty works. You would make a great white slave.”

Ming: “Need a job? I can offer you [cmfeirs] to work at my factory here in Goung zhou. I will pay you 1000 yuan. You can sleep at the workers dormitory and eat at the company cafeteria . . .”

cmfeirs, did Ming (who-pays-1000-rmb-to-have-his-ball-licked) make any job offers to your wife? His wife must not be doing her job.

  10. Jeez. Shut up everyone, your opinions don’t matter. I recommend you study electrical engineering so you can, I don’t know, build circuits and shit.

Do your parents know you’re up this late?

Go and put on your pajamas and go to sleep.

You shouldn’t be up so late writing nonsense on this blog?

  13. Life is indeed hard on the girl who has to work and to take on the roles of taking care of her siblings. She may have the luxuries of life like dolls and great clothes richer girls of her age have but I hope she is happy.

  14. wow any helper?

  15. Dear Zhang Qian Qian.
I’m sure that you’ll get a good return for all great things you’ve done.

  16. I am surprised that this girl’s parents had four children although they probably are poor. I hope this is a temporary job for her. I once did menial work when I was very young too, although my family was not poor. Teenage boys want to earn money as a form of independence from their parents sometimes.

  17. I also had to work hard with my family as a kid, even when I was younger than her. That is not as bad as it seems to be. It is sadly the case in poor areas and poor people and there will always be people like that.

  18. I want support her going to school.

  19. ai……

    I have nothing to say!
    Wish you a good life!

  20. i cannot help you,girl,but i hope you will have a better furture,in this country,…

  21. 天朝一片亚克西,朝廷说,此图是个例,各媒体不得非法报道。非法炒作。我了个草,这多中国人,咋就不写汉语?丢了你的丑是吧?

  22. a marvelous girl

hope that u’ll get a better place there

  23. Anyone know if this girls family received aid or help from anyone? Any updates on this?

  24. This situation always make me want to cry. I respected this little girl more than a dirty politician. If only the owner of the brick company could do more for them……. But i doubt they will………….

  25. I think this is good. I think all children should work long hours. This will teach them responsibility/ respect for parents/ and make them more economically productive as they grow older. In contrary American kids are raise on video games and never grow up. Their parents give them everything so they value nothing and are weak. As a result they hate their parents and even kill them for no reason.

  26. Or are they poor because they have four children? If they only had one and put all of those other resources that would have gone into the other three, the one kid could have better food, better clothes, and a better education, right?

  27. It’s really simple: all over the world, the poor have large families, and the desperately poor have small or no families.
This is a common pattern where every extra pair of hands can earn just a little more than they need for themselves. If 1 or 2 get sick, there is reserve capacity. If they all stay healthy, then the extra production can make the family much more secure.

I’ve met women in Mexico who have had over 20 children, one had 17 still alive. That one was was a figure of awe to the men in her village. If her husband had died, the day after his funeral she could have had her pick of the unmarried men in the village, despite being shaped like a triangle with legs.
