You can use words like “revealing” or “scantily clad” but not naked, because naked means wearing no clothes. I think it’s funny because this is the second time in two days that I’ve seen Chinese people writing in English misuse the word naked. The second time was here:

Thrown into this time-warp mess with rapid urbanization, the “Internets” [sic], a tech savvy youth population numbering in the hundreds of millions, stifling media control and you have a recipe for potential chaos and unrest.

I’m surprised it hasn’t blown a lid much earlier. Well, there were burps and belches but nothing like some African country that I won’t care to name.

I wish I could be Chinese. The country’s future is so bright I have to wear shades. Gotta love it!!!

In all honesty, unless you thought you were in an exclusive relationship with Zhang and these photos came out.. then you needn’t be getting upset at all!

Porcelain skin does not automatically equal beauty dear fellow. One thing it does prove is that you don’t get out enough or you are brainwashed into believing that the sun tanning your skin is a sign of being poor. Being able to go to the beach when you choose could in fact be a sign that you are doing rather well in life. Hiding under an umbrellas and wearing one of those visors that looks like a welding mask all day long doesn’t seem like a fun way of spending the day.

Back to Zhang! She is definitely not the hottest girl from China but she IS very cute. Besides, I don’t think any ONE girl can ever be considered the “hottest girl in China” because any reasonable person would had to concede that personal taste would dictate. If you need the help of a poll or someone else’s opinion before making your own then your opinion is fairly useless.

Nobody outside of China gets worked up about things like this because it is just a girl on a beach trying to catch some sun. This should be some sort of sign that it’s really not a big deal. The idiom, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” is an apropos statement to define all the rants here.

The expert, viz., “Calm,” seems to know the value of skin color as a proponent of attractiveness and/or as a socioeconomic indicator fails to compare apples to apples.

If porcelain skin is to be the common denominator for beauty then Zhang fails the acid test. Have you seen her earlier movies?

Should tanned skin (Brazilian models, anyone?) be the deciding issue Zhang misses the mark there too.

I have at least compared her to her compatriots in China where a Chinese woman is deemed more attractive if she had flawless porcelain skin. I did not say that it was an empirical truism to be held as a standard for beauty. Ms. Zhang’s comely features betray her without my indication.

So by both accounts she’s not a winner from my point of view. But of course she isn’t ugly by any means. Beautiful however is not an adjective I would offer but feisty, acrobatic and down-to-earth would be appropriate.

On the other hand, Calm offered his insights to his tastes (or luck) in women which reveals two things: his limited or non-existent interactions with actual beautiful Chinese women (from the Freudian slip that we know it to be about the sexually repressed example he offered up); or a feeble mind so easily influenced by mass marketing techniques (brainwashed) that has exalted Zhang to the status as “a beauty” (dare I say I hit the bulls-eye there, Calm?).

First of all, if you’re writing a blog in English, you are unavoidably submitting your wording to the scrutiny of native English speakers. So yes, you can frivolously refer to the fact that most English speakers do not speak Chinese but a proper comparison would be to find an English-speaker who blogs in Chinese and uses Mandarin incorrectly. In that case I would expect native Chinese speakers to point out the flaws too.

Secondly, why are you assuming I have something especially against Chinese English speakers? I questioned the ability of Chinese people using English because in recent days I twice noticed Chinese individuals using the word “naked” incorrectly. Because my comment was made in a specific context you have no evidence whatsoever that I hypocritically harp on Chinese English speakers but not English speakers who abuse the Chinese language. What makes you so certain I don’t reserve amused disapproval for the latter? Because I certainly do. A blog named Hanzi Smatter is only RSS reader, rest assured, I have far more contempt for people who stupidly get tattoos in foreign languages than I do for Chinese bloggers who misuse an English word. But the fact that idiots in America get bad tattoos in Chinese doesn’t cancel out my ability to point out the misuses of an English word on a blog.

First of all, referring to Wikipedia, the encyclopedia that anyone can edit, is one of the most cliche, eye-rolling web-debater techniques in the history of the tubes. One of the reasons why nobody takes a Wiki cite seriously (the only people who use them as sources being people who don’t think things through thoroughly) is the simple fact that “just because Wikipedia says so, doesn’t make it right.” You’d do well to remember that.

Secondly, it doesn’t matter what Wikipedia says, that doesn’t change the fact that througout the entire English speaking world, the word “naked” is almost always used by native English speakers to refer to the complete absence of clothing. You could conduct a number of different polls asking any question you desire, such as, “If a person is naked, what is he/she wearing?” or “If you were told that the person in this room is naked, what would you see when you opened the door?” or “What is the definition of naked?” Do so, and speakers of the language itself would verify that the communicative meaning of this particular word – and language is for communication – is the absence of clothing.

I have a strong suspicion that this “naked” thing is another delightful, unintended side-effect of China’s centralized education system. The other notable and most prominent example I put forward reflecting this situation is what a vast majority of Chinese speaking people think is the proper way to express 聪明 in English. Almost all of them think it’s “clever.” I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve heard people being described as “clever” when they mean to say “smart.” This widespread error is simply caused by the fact that in English classes that is the translation students are taught. Like naked, *technically speaking*, if you’re being nitpicky (and you are), “clever” does mean smart. But in reality, it doesn’t. Clever has a whole seperate shade of meaning and almost 95% of the time I’ve heard Chinese indivuals use the word “clever” the usage was incorrect. I have no problem that you and other native speakers pointed out an English misuse, I actually like it, but your frivolously way is inappropriate. People accept constructive suggestions but react naturally on offending ’suggestions’? When I saw misuse in Chinese language, by common people or foreign media, a simple remind with explanation is enough. Some time I even think there’s creativity in those misuse.

It seems that you read Chinese, so you should know the original post don’t have the English word ‘naked’ at all. The translators in this blog (and other websites) paid great efforts and time to polish their English in order to present Chinese internet tales with its original taste and flavour. What they want is a bridge but not rebuke. Please do respect that.

Common usage is not the same as correct usage. Ask any American what “irregardless” means and they’ll give you a definition, despite the fact that the word isn’t a part of the English language. Do the same experiment with “affect” and “effect” and you’ll begin to lose hope.
