Chinese Gas Prices Compared To America By Angry Netizen

china-pumping-gasoline-06

From Mop:

China’s Development and Reform Commission bullshitting China’s gas prices, saying–” international oil prices have greatly increased”?_____”brought in line with international”,…but American gasoline prices are said to be only 3+ yuan after converting to RMB, and before bridge toll/fees, highway toll/fees, our gasoline prices are already over 2+ yuan! Already 65%!!

–Let us use facts to prove this.

The average American gasoline prices as seen on the internet today:

united-states-average-gas-prices-march-2009

The above is States Average Gas Prices is “United States average gasoline prices”.

For example: Wyoming state 1.753, Wyoming (unit should be USD/gallon?)

If we use the foreign exchange rate I just checked: 1 USD = 6.8311 yuan RMB

And 1 gallon = 3.785 liters

Conversion (U.S.) price: ?

1.753 USD * 6.8311 / 3.785 liters = 3.16 yuan RMB / liter (American gasoline price)

According to what netizens have said today, Yichang’s 93 octane gasoline is approximately 5.20 yuan/liter??

Yichang (it is said that Beijing, etc. are even higher) gasoline prices compared to Wyoming state is higher by %
(5.2-3.16) / 3.16 * 100% = 2.04/3.16 * 100% = 65%! ! ! !

Our gasoline prices per liter is 2.04 yuan higher than the United States, exceeding 65%!!!

And they do not have grade one, grade two road fees, bridge fees, highway fees…

And their average wages are perhaps 10 times our average wages…

– Do not think that oil is only used for driving, because oil cannot be separated from the lives of the ordinary common people. For example: plastics, chemical fibers…Ceramics (made with diesel oil), building materials…travel fares…logistics costs…

What is the significance of this 65%? Everyday the entire country must use gasoline, but multiply every liter by 2.04 yuan, is that not an astronomical figure?

Where does this astronomical 65% go???

Brother, why are you still like a fenqing? You need to learn to get used to it. It has been some time already.

I am not like you, I am not angry, working hard to earn money, and then emigrate. Hehe, this is what smart people do. Lu Xun said it before, calling people names and threatening absolutely is not fighting, so I am not angry, I do not grumble, I do not yell at the Development and Reform Commission, peacefully accepting, and then telling myself what I should be doing.

想说啥呢:

Because the Chinese petrochemical and Chinese oil are state-owned monopolies, so who can do anything about that??

狂-涛:

Others are already on the international track, and we are just bringing ourselves in line with international standards, so there is a portion of access fees!

官商勾结:

Since our country believes the ordinary common people have already prospered to the level of the citizens of developed countries, the government levies taxes even higher than those of developed countries, and wants to bring us in line with international standards/practice. If so, then I suggest our government also acknowledge what a responsible government should be responsible for:
Please bring China’s welfare in line with developed country standards/practices, okay?

sg_1975_ok:

It is because China’s official business uses cars too much and needs to make up for this shortfall, and they can only do so by increasing prices and taking advantage of the ordinary common people.

How can a capitalist society be higher? I do not believe it, we are a socialist society.

My next car, if I still have the courage to buy a car, will definitely be a Japanese car! Why should I continue to support so-called national companies? Letting them drink our blood?! Your features I believe the masses have already seen clearly! Starting from the 25th onward, I have already stopped refusing Japanese products, nor will I mind what France says or does not say, those things are already too far removed from my life! If I have some spare cash, I will do my best to invest it outside of the country. I can only do things my own way, because what I give and what I receive in this environment is not fair.

悠悠伤心:

When China can be like America and beat up a countries like Iraq until they cannot fight back, then oil prices will be lower than America’s.

619366501lx:

You think our country has not taken oil from here and there???
We exempt this debt and that debt???
Why do you think this happens???
Chinese oil companies are now also getting oil in Iraq.

Forget it
This is not the reason/excuse
Even if all of the world’s oil were in our country
Our country’s oil prices would also be very high.

Because this is Chinese characteristics.

fwhao312:

Us Chinese owners are so miserable.

Thinking of that niu phrase on the BBS:
Whenever there is something that cannot be understood,
just remember that you are in China and you will understand.

天下无TAN:

I really want to yell at you guys, international oil prices? Were it not for you bunch of SBs wantonly using oil when oil prices were low, would it have increased this much? You bunch of near-sighted SBs!

Idling around with nothing to do calculating the money in the ordinary common people’s pockets!!!

No way, I have been this patriotic for nothing? Our motherland is glorious, our society is harmonious, our citizens have character and are elegant, and the ordinary common people are masters of their own country. Public servants serve the citizens. It cannot be how you say it is! I refuse to believe it!!!

lqw9817:

Raising prices happens over one night.

Lowering prices happens over one month.

包治各种不服:

I just do not see why the price of oil increases this quickly but does not decrease in the same way??? I just remembered that international oil prices fell a few months ago, with each barrel costing 140 USD falling and falling until it broke 40 USD, yet domestic oil prices remained unchanged, one moment pretending to be deaf and dumb, the other moment using specious arguments in every way, stubbornly refusing to reduce prices to the end. Only in the end under widespread condemnation did they reluctantly, angrily, sacrificially lowered prices by less than 20% while international oil prices dropped over 70%. If the international oil prices slightly rebound, domestic oil prices immediately strongly rebound, as if they were especially impatiently waiting for this excuse. The efficiency of the thievery leaves people flabbergasted! The international oil prices only rose that little bit, yet what reason do you have for so suddenly increasing this much?! The ordinary common people truly have no place to reason! We can only sigh! Sigh! Businessmen’s hearts are so black!

Lou zhu, are you stupid? America’s oil comes from depending on their troops and over ten aircraft carriers to steal it from around the world, did you think they were the world’s strongest for no reason?
What I do not understand is why idiots these days all like to compare with America. You can go look at Europe’s oil prices and then come here to talk.
Stupid!

  1. First! God, I am a gigantic loser…

  2. Too little prayers said to ALL?Ah! I say with a frown…

Then, on second thought, can’t China get their gas from Russia?

  3. These numbers are misleading. Gas is actually over two dollars in my small town, and we have no public transportation.

The U.S. largely relies on the Saudis and Iraq…Allah must be frowning (at us).

  4. It is well known that gasoline in USA are under priced.

  5. The US has lower gas taxes than Europe, and we don’t have state-owned monopolies running our oil industry. So the market for gasoline in the US is very competitive, and the price is relatively low (not “under-priced”). I am curious how much of China’s gas price is taxes, if those taxes have a purpose aside from raising money, and how much the SOE monopoly situation raises prices.

  6. Arrr….that poster is right… UK oil price is 90p… thats 10-15 RMB per liter depends how strong the Pound is.

  7. Isn’t 93 octane considered premium gas? Usually data on gas prices are shown using regular.

    • It would be over here in America.

    • The gas prices the OP is using are for 87 octane gas (the “standard” gas in the U.S.). The highest octane stuff, in the U.S. it would be 91 octane, costs approximately 11% more.

The price varies greatly by geographic location. Even in different parts of the same town the price for gas changes. In Alaska the 91 octane costs $2.818 per gallon (which comes in at 5.09 RMB per liter… very close to China’s price) while in Wyoming it comes in at 3.49 RMB per liter. Of course the OP’s point about the lower pay is a significant one. Chinese pay a premium to have and drive a car. If I look at the costs my sister-in-law has to bear I see that EACH of them costs more than its equivalent in the U.S.: Fee for drivers training, fee for license, actual cost of the car, gas, owning a parking space, etc. These would cost, in my state in the U.S.: driver training: 800RMB; license fee:150RMB; new car (standard Honda Accord): 150,285RMB; gas: 3.5RMB/liter; parking: free. We have to also have car insurance in the U.S. (I don’t think China requires this… not sure. Anyone know?) and this costs roughly (depends on age and driving record) 3,500RMB per year. Overall I’d say it is significantly cheaper to own and operate a car in the U.S. than in China. If it all cost as much here as it does there I think more Americans would be willing to try trains and buses… I know I would. When I’m in China I prefer to take trains, buses, subways and taxis (or walk).

FWIW we have three grades in the U.S.: Regular(87 octane), Mid(89 octane), Premium(91-92 octane). Frankly only high performance vehicles benefit from or require the premium. I’ve never used anything but 87 octane myself and would stick to 90 octane if I dared to drive in China.

A good, unbiased site for average prices in the U.S. is: http://www.fuelgaugereport.com/sbsavg.asp

  8. Yeah America’s gas is not heavily taxed like it is in most of the developed world. That’s different from being under priced though; i associate that with being subsidized. China should be more in line with our prices since they have a similar philosophy of low gas taxes. They also will be able to subsidize the sector or lean on it.

I think both sides have some good points here, a state owned company that has been gobbling up resources and selling to a developing country shouldn’t be a little more expensive than the US. On the other hand it would be very complicated to determine if they are doing any wrong or not. One thing is for sure, bitching at the gas companies is a universal human trait.

  9. Back in the day you could use baijiu to power Chinese cars. Serves us right for moving away from booze fueled vehicles.

  10. If the original poster wants to whine about something, they should at least use the right data. Super-unleaded gas is currently ~$2.50/gallon in California and that’s only 91 octane. The table he/she uses clearly states that Wyoming has the lowest gas prices by state. As someone else mentioned, oil is a commodity. Price differences between different countries is primarily due to taxes. Gotta pay for the $43B Olympics somehow.

  11. UK petrol is heavily taxed, part of the government’s efforts to get us to give up our Land Rovers – more than half the cost of petrol is tax. On the flip-side, we a nationalised petroleum industry, and produce about as much as we consume – no colonialism necessary (we do it for the shits and giggles).

  12. I mean “We don’t have a nationalised petroleum industry” – Shell, BP etc. all compete freely.

  13. yo chinaSMACK, post that BBS story about some 22-year old american english teacher who tried to extort money from a chinese student after taking naked photos of her. what a douche…

  14. Here on Canada’s West Coast, gasoline 87 octane sells at $1.00 CND= 5.416 CNY .For higher octane add $0.30 to $ 0.50. So what are you complaining about.

  15. Chinese price was figured using 93 octane fuel. The chart showing the average price per state in the US is based on 87 or 88 octane fuel. If you want to get a closer estimate, then add anywhere from $0.50 to over a $1.00 US to the prices for 93 octane fuel in the US.

Also, the states listed in the charts are generally the cheapest gas states in the country.

  16. @Patrick & warped0ne
China uses Research Octane Number(RON)like most of the countries, and the US uses Anti-Knock Index (AKI).
So, 93 RON is about the same as 87 AKI.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating

  17. There are huge price differences if you look around the world. Check out gas prices in Venezuela, for example, or on the other side of things, various countries in Europe.

  18. Well, gas HAS to be cheaper in the US, where there is almost no public transportation whatsoever… traveling in a city is very inconvenient and almost impossible without a car, and traveling around the country is cheapest by car.

I WISH gas was more expensive here in the US, it would make our stupid government do something to make public transportation more prevalent in day to day lives and cut down on emissions.

  19. cars are considered luxury goods in China, if you can’t afford to buy gas than you’d better take the bus—this represents the opinion of my cousin, who drives a Hummer in China.

    • Hummers suck. When I see people driving them I have a hard time maintaining a positive opinion of them and with the traffic in China, driving a Hummer (or any huge vehicle) seems ridiculous. Though I suspect the real reason why anyone in China would drive such a vehicle is simply that their ego needs some boosting.

I take the bus, subway or taxi absolutely everywhere. I wish we had a better bus and train system in the U.S. so I could ditch my car here.

      • He never takes if off-road, and always washes that piece of crap. It’s the same reason why the Chinese peasants build 4 story houses with the top two floor left vacant.

  20. Everyone and they mama knows the reason they jack-up the gas prices is so they can pay those gas attendants a 100,000 USD salary. Believe it!

  21. I know Capt. Absurdity is joking but it reminds me of when I was a college student and I worked as a gas station attendant to earn money. In 1 year we were robbed three times (the manager was beaten with the gun and sprayed in the face with mace in one incident), get robbed by one of our own employees, had a crazy lady attack the booth with an axe (turns out bullet proof glass is also axe proof), had prostitutes use the bathroom to (loudly at times) conduct business, had people offer me cocaine for cigarettes and alcohol, had a drug dealer fight in the parking area (money and crack were scattered everywhere) and had people offer very clearly stolen goods for cigarettes and alcohol, had a group of morbidly obese people (giggling madly) go into the bathroom together and come out 15 minutes later (still giggling) after which I was sent to see what they had done in there (they had smeared human feces on literally every square inch of the bathroom). On the day before the first of each month we received a shipment of alcohol so large that it filled the entire work area to the ceiling. It was all gone in 2 days (first of the month is when poor people in the U.S. get their government assistance money. They can’t use it to buy alcohol or cigarettes so some sell it to dealers for 50 cents per dollar and then use the cash to buy enough alcohol to keep them drunk for a few days). Interesting times. All that for $4.15 an hour at the time.

The moral? Have rich parents so you don’t have to do that!

    • Hey… turn back the time 2 1999 and I’d go 4 some cigs 4 coke… good deal.

No, seriously. I’m talking about the gas attendant in CHINA… You know exactly what I’m talking about. They offer the best services on the planet… by gasing up your car and watching your every move. I mean they must work 4 the government as some super agent dudes.

BTW. I have NO rich parents. Matter of fact, I support my mama. ***T is so treal right now, if I lose my $15 dollar an hour job I’m f***ed! My Mama is f***ed. We’re all f***ed.

    • where the hell were you working? compton?

  22. China is not alone in having high gas prices. In other countries with huge state-owned enterprises and a few private operators, prices will be stable and hardly fluctuate. State owned enterprises are strategic industries that governments used to balance the budget and keep stability.

Also, it depends on refineries as well. If there are more refineries, the more downstream competition, the lower the price will be at the bowser.

In other countries, the treehuggers have got their way, the public have gone for small efficient cars or hybrid fuel cell cars like Europe, spend money on better public transport infrastructure, ride bicycles.

The price of fossil fuels will rise if the world move towards more greenhouse gas emissions reductions, climate change and renewable energy.

  23. What’a so suprising ? There are much more to moan about taking cost of car ownership as a subject :

    1. Why are we still paying for “bridge” fees in south China ? Isn’t a bridge part of a road ??? Previously this was called “Road and bridge fees” Nothing have changed, the fees / rates remain as is but the word “road” is now missing from the compulsory fees to be paid for car ownership.

    2. Environmental permit – 30 Rmb for emission test (in Shenzhen) and the permit is free !!! Didn’t we all had emission tested during the annual inspection ? What a disguise to collect money !

    3. Fees for road usage (2nd tier) is on the increase for some zones. These are supposed to be eliminated and instead of publishing a time table to show when these will be eliminated, the local govt quietly increase the fees !! Who’s controlling these ?

    4. Parking fees – these are also increasing and many towns have recently implemented paid parking. Previously these were free.

I believe there are many more…

All these are just a cat and mouse game … you take away some and something new comes up or a name change … the collection goes on !!!

    • You should check out DMVs in the State. I just registered my car in California for 300 USD (that’s after paying 300 USD for registration in Massachusetts ><), bridge cost 5 USD here btw. well, the conclusion is government will take your money no matter what. with California in deficit, I suspect there will even more ingenious ways for fee collection….

  24. Geez.. stop complaining. Canada’s way worse. You don’t even need to drive a car in China. Public transportation is so much more efficient. =__=

  25. why the 65% extra?
we need money to build carriers and missles
one day we will conquer the world
by then, we will have cheap gas
    americans will pay extra
    chinaman rules -

  26. Your price sheet for retail gas prices in the US is not up to date. See below and remember that prices are always in flux.

    http://www.eia.doe.gov/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/wrgp/mogas_home_page.html

  27. Stupid ugly chinese pieces of shit. Only knows how to spit mucus in public and pick their noses.

Also scratching their feet in public,

    Dirty ass motherfuckers

  28. China deserves to have higher gas prices. Too damn many people and already too many cars. The world doesn’t need more pollution from China.

  29. lou zhu is dumb. the us imports most of its oil from canada and mexico. the war for oil myth is just that, a myth.

for every gallon of gasoline that is sold in the US, the government (state and federal combined) take about 50 cents. the avg. profit for an oil company on a gallon of gasoline is about 10 cents.

  30. gas prices are about the same as china in some parts of canada. The Americans stupidly low gas prices let them afford to drive SUVs nowhere all day. . . i am happy we have higher prices as it gives people incentive to conserve fuel, but it is still not high enough to affect everybody.

  31. LoL, I thought 悠悠伤心 and 好白白哦’s comments were pretty hilarious. Nothing quite bands the populace together against the government like taxes and corruption.

  32. I doubt the validity of their data – I travel all over the western half of the US for 6 weeks every summer, and I haven’t seen gas prices below $2/gallon since 1992.

Their data must be reflecting WHOLESALE prices, not retail.

  33. Man why are you people bitchin’? Is life fair? No!
Take public transportation if you don’t like it.

This is as simple as “why do dogs lick their own balls?”
    — because they can.

  34. when were these figures taken? The year 1998? Just last year where I am from it was over 4 dollars a gallon?

  35. must have been a brain inversion…

    damn terrorists!

  36. In the UK, the cost is as follows:

    Total Cost = approx 90p/litre (9RMB)
    Company Production Cost & Profit – 30p/litre (2-3RMB)
    Government Retail Tax – approximately 60p/litre (6RMB)

Most of Western Europe have similar petrol prices, which means cars are 2x more fuel efficient, which is a boon to 1. the environment 2. the taxpayer 3. oil security

Lastly, industry and agriculture get their fuel without the paying most the taxes above.

  37. Um…your gas price averages are completely wrong. The average national price is more like $2.641/gallon. Gas hasn’t been that cheap for years.

Also, China is just as capitalist as America. Haha…remember its “socialism with Chinese characteristics”.

  38. Chinese drivers and American drivers would both be shocked if the arrived in Europe where prices well exceed those quoted above. In Britain a litre of unleaded fuel is over 1 pound or 11.23 RMB. Diesel is in excess of 1.20 GBP [13.47 RMB]. It all comes down to tax or subsidization. That is mostly controlled by the government, whether that be the Chinese, British or American government.

  39. Check the prices in Europe…. China gasoline is twice less expensive!

  40. Sorry but your chart with the USA prices is old, and inaccurate. the average price is more like $4.10 a gallon which is close to $1.00 per liter, which is about 6.81 yuan per Liter
