Girl Struggles To Raise Money For Own Heart Operation

From Mop:

One RMB—Hope to Catch the Last Bus of Life

xiao-juan-chinese-girl-letters-hospital

Starting from today, I’ve decided to sneak out of the hospital, walk onto the streets, and give every passerby one yuan. This one yuan is meant as a receipt for borrowed money. I hope I can find people who are willing to help me.

Dad, mom, please don’t cry. I know you’re scared that I might have an accident, because I could die any moment. Ya Nan, don’t cry either. I thank you for giving me this idea. I didn’t think I would actually follow through with it.

We all need to face life with a smile. I hope everybody who sees my post will be able to smile like me. I know you are all people who are passionate about life.

My name is Xiao Juan, I’m almost 18.
My ID card number is 362426199111081828, cell phone number is 15913121266

I was born with a congenital heart disease. Right now I’m at the Guangzhou Military Hospital. There are 7 days left. If I can pay the fees in full, then I will be able to complete the surgery before I turn 18, otherwise I will have missed the best time phase for the surgery.

If I can’t pay for the fees, then I won’t have the opportunity to undergo the surgery. I’m not afraid. I will still face life with courage like the rest of you. And face the future…though I don’t know if I will have one…

Follow-up post:

As a matter of fact, most people just ignore me, and would not accept the money I attempt to give them. I see suspicion lining their eyes, suspicious that I am a fraud. Although I feel very upset, I really want to be able to have this surgery.

This woman stopped, took my yuan, and looked at the words on the back. Then she took about 100 RMB and threw it at me, before starting to lecture me: little girl, I know you’re not for real! But I’m still giving you money because I just came back from praying at the Buddhist temple. But your actions are wrong. People should live honestly. You can’t earn a living off of swindling. Are you from Henan?!

Hearing this, I couldn’t control my falling tears. I did not know how to reply and could only answer: Sister, I’m from Jiangxi.

Actually, this woman is a good person…

Follow-up post:

I’ve already said, we are posting this on Xiao Juan’s behalf. I posted this with her friend Qiqi. We are all members of Mop!

This is not a fraud. We want to draw attention through the internet.

I’m an ordinary person, one of the people helping Xiao Juan to type and post. We are not so-called internet pushers, we simply want to help a girl that needs to be helped, and hope that she receives attention.

As per everyone’s requests, we will make her medical and family situation records public:

I just texted them, and got Xiao Juan’s bank account number. Will transfer 100 RMB when I get off work. (I’ve also very poor, I can only show my support.)

Though it’s against her wishes, I will publicize her bank information.

[her bank information]

I know you probably won’t believe me, but those who know please confirm it for me!

I don’t have a camera and so I can’t show you a photo of the text message. Sorry!

Hope Xiao Juan gets well soon!

Hope you get well soon.

Follow-Up Post 1:

Although I don’t have the strength to answer everybody’s phone calls, not to mention all of your text messages, but I’ve saved everyone’s texts. Sometimes I’m very tired and my vision’s blurry so that I can’t see the cell phone screen clearly. Sister Zhou would help me record every message. For every unanswered call, if I can successfully complete the surgery, when I can move my hands, the first thing I will do will be to tell everyone who’s called or texted me. In the case that I don’t have a chance to respond, I will ask Zhou to thank you for me, thank all of you who’s cared about me. Wherever I am, I will wish you well…

Follow-Up Post 2:

Reporting on the current status of the fundraising, after receiving help from Kuai Le Dian Charity Website, we have all the fees needed for the operation. Additionally, the website insisted on giving us almost 20,000 RMB more, in case the costs rise during the operation.
This attests to the risks of the surgery, which has us worried…
Thank you, Kuai Le Dian for such thoughtfulness!!!
This is the receipt from the hospital, please review.

Follow-Up Post 3:

After seeing so many netizen’s support, encouragement, and concern, we are all very, very moved. According to the doctor, Xiao Juan has Tetralogy of Fallot, and her heart has four defects. Patients like her usually die before turning 3, and Xiao Juan is undoubtedly a miracle! Now with the netizen’s care and support, we have raised enough money for the operation within a day! The netizens have created another miracle! Xiao Juan is a lucky person, God is merciful, and we have saved a beautiful and young life. We’are all tearing up after reading your comments full of heartfelt emotions, and I hope netizens can maintain this kind of sincerity and caring for others in need! Xiao Juan will undergo surgery this Friday. The operation has very high risks, and the surgeon is under a lot of pressure. Let us pray for her together! On Xiao Juan’s behalf, thank you all!

As of now, Xiao Juan has received a total of 45,000 RMB from the charity website, Kuai Le Dian, and more than 67,000 RMB from netizens. She has already closed the account set up to receive donations. She doesn’t know what to do with the extra money and would like to return it to the donors, but many didn’t leave any contact information.

state health care went away during 90′s reforms, went China is copying the US model of medical insurance policies and self-sufficient hospital.

Why do they copy the bad things we do!? :(

Please keep track of this story. I would also like to donate a few hundred RMB if she still needs money for the surgery.

Glad to read that she managed to raise the money. 40,000rmb is really not much. It would be a shame if she dies because she can’t raise this sum.

  • 900

Years ago there was a story in China about the internet. It said that the net would provide the Chinese with the voice they need. I think as has been said that this story above is proof of that. It would be a complete bummer if this turned out to be an elaborate scam though.

there are many individual cases like this happen in china i am sure. while the communist government is holding the such amount USD saving, half it they could help many of the cases. raise some state health system, that’s what the Chinese need….unfortunately they are not real communist and capitalist either.

“Student auctions off virginity for offers of more than £2.5 million ($3.7m).”

A student who is auctioning her virginity to pay for a masters degree in Family and Marriage therapy has seen bidding hit £2.5million ($3.7m).

    Published: 12 Jan 2009

Natalie Dylan, 22, is auctioning off her virginity to fund her master’s degree.

Natalie Dylan, 22, claims her offer of a one-night stand has persuaded 10,000 men to bid for sex with her.

Last September, when her auction came to light, she had received bids up to £162,000 ($243,000) but since then interest in her has rocketed.

This is a much faster way to raise money than the way she’s currently doing it.

    • spanky

I hear it is less than 5,000 RMB in China.

  • gth793y

    ohhhh, bullshit.

Why the hell would some take a picture of her while some lady is scorning her, just so she can make a point? Unless she asked some body to take a picture of her in stance intentionally. Why are people so fallible .

  • http:///www.maxiewawa.com maxiewawa

So she’s trying to raise money by giving everyone 1 yuan? I don’t think she understands that she needs to RECEIVE money, not give it away.

  • charlie

This is where the socialized system does not work! There is an operation that can cure an individual that may in the future provide great deeds for others, yet the procedure is not covered.

She’s investing her money to gain sponsors for her much needed operation, much like investing your money in a business exoecting a return. Intersting thought, hope folks follow-through.

    • Alikese

Uhm… in real socialized medicine this procedure would be covered, and she wouldn’t have to pay anything aside from her yearly taxes. On the other hand, living without insurance would be a one way ticket to not being able to afford medical help.

    • Ernie Bevin

You lunatic, you have no idea what you’re talking about. In the UK her operation and all associated care would be free at the time required.
As Alikese notes, the unspoken expectation is that during your working life you contribute in taxes and National Insurance payments, but there’s no calculation of how much you’re paid in vs. the cost of any treatment you may require. Which is why it’s the only civilised system.

    • Chris

Did you read the previous comments where they pointed out that the Chinese health system is no longer socialised?

This sort of case is a good example of why socialised medicine is so important.

This girl has a life-threatening condition which would make insurance companies charge her a large fee for her health insurance. It isn’t a product of her lifestyle or her parents lifestyle – it is entirely random. So why should society wash its hands of her and abdicate any responsibility?

With a socialised health system, bad luck like this is covered by society, and this makes everybody’s lives better.

Chinese consumerism is stunted because Chinese have a high saving rate. Part of the reason for the high saving rate is that they have to save up money for bad luck such as this.

If there was a decent socialised health care system in China, then some of those savings wouldn’t be necessary, so Chinese people would be able to spend more money. This would help to aleviate the imbalance in trade that China has with the rest of the world – meaning more jobs in Europe and the USA.

See, socialised health care isn’t just good for unfortunate individuals, it is good for all of us.

    Rock On! Get it Girl!

  • Coyote

Sure looks like BS to me. I don’t see a shred of proof that this story is real. How about the name of her cardiologist at the hospital for starters?

  • Peteryang

Authenticity aside, there are a lot more people who need much more help than she does, the guy that had his lung opened up a couple of times for example, shouldn’t donations go to him first??

Poor peasants, farmers, low-wagers, layoffs, petitioners, beggers, etc.. they never post videos online, nor do they cry to attract sympathy.

    • Chris

That’s a problem with the attention span of the internet and society, not a reason to criticise people giving money to this girl.

Her need is real – why should you suggest that she needs to compete with others in a “whose need is greatest” style competition?

Very often arguing that other people are more deserving of attention is an excuse for doing nothing – “I’d help, but there are others who need the help more, so if I help here, then I’m being unfair to them.”

      • Stuart

A sound perspective on these type of subjects for a change. you should consider politics Chris. You could maybe bring some compassion into our increasingly insensitive and selfish society.

  • Den

I have to agree at least partially with “not convinced”…something not quite right with this story. But, the girl is pretty and so I guess it is all ok and discrepancies must be overlooked.

  • Rob

I am very skeptical about these kinds of things. I have to say this is either a very elaborate scheme or the truth. Official documents are very easy to forge in China but the pictures with the news crew and in the paper seems realistic.

I believe this story is real, these actions seem like that of a cute naive Chinese girl, just doing something from her heart. It doesn’t make sense because the heart often doesn’t make sense, nor does love. Authentic? I have to say it is.

Why did she need to have the operation done within seven days before she turns 18? As if when it is her birthday some special 18th birthday hormone will be secreted that will make heart surgery impossible. What’s the difference in being 17 yrs and 51 weeks or 18 yrs and 1 week. Such a hoax. There should be charities set up to help minors who need surgery. It’s a shame to lose young lives due to poverty.

I don’t understand why the Chinese Government would not pay for this..they are the RICHEST government in the WORLD!!!
