    I’m Chinese, and I can attest to the fact that many of us are racist. In fact, I don’t think I know anyone I know who is Chinese that isn’t racist. The main force that drives racism though isn’t race, rather its $$$. Historically speaking, after all the white folk [Europeans] went around taking over Asia, Africa, the middle East, and the Americas, white folk managed to ursurp resources, mess with politics, and cash in on everyone else’s misery. So what happens? White folk end up richer than the natives, and thus and influencing the natives’ politics, their education, and their businesses. Because of that, people end up striving to look more European [skin lightening, nose fixing, etc].
    Knowing this, its easy to see that the Chinese want nothing to do with anything anti- European, and the farthest spectrum from being white is being dark. I’m not defending their racism; I’m just pointing out that if it were the Africans going around colonizing Asia and everywhere else, people would more likely be prone to wanting to be darker.
    I would like to say I think its ironic that the responses against Chinese racism are often equally as racist. And comments from Black folk bashing Asians wanting to look white; sociology studies have shown that black kids tend to treat their darker peers, or those from Africa, not the US, worse than their lighter peers. If you look at magazine photos of most of the Black female celebrities, you’ll see that the pictures have been altered so that they look paler [Rhianna, Beyonce are excellent examples of this]. So its not just asians that are feeling the effects of the White folk’s political and $$ influence.
    The sad part of all of this is when I talk to other Chinese, many of their beliefs about Black people have nothing to do with interacting with them. They automatically assume all these stereotypes, but they’ve never interacted with Black people. Where do they get all these stereotypes? From the white-folk run media. I’m happy to say that my impression of Black people have always been that they are educated, articulate, ambitious, and hardworking. But that’s because I’ve interacted with them in College, Grad school, and at work [and i don't believe the media portrayals of black people]. None of the Chinese I know have really tried interacting outside their race, so I constantly have to yell at people when they start being ignorant.
    So what to do? I think Barak Obama is an excellent step forward. At least now, Chinese people have to think twice about being racist, because a Black man has suddenly become one of the most powerful men in the world.

      @ Am Chinese. Obama’s election to the White House does little if anything to change the fortunes of his people in Africa. By and large, Black people are still the lowest order in the scale of human evolution.

      Obama was mostly elected by White voters, not because of his colour but in spite of it. Obama’s claim to fame is hinged on the fact that his mother is White; other than that, he has no authority to lead a great nation such as America.

      Fact is, the American people would NEVER allow Obama to mobilise or squander the nation’s resources to improve the lot of his people in Africa. Not even America has enough resources to alter the fortunes of millions of starving, disease ridden, miserable people in Africa.

      Remember Obama’s inaugural speech on 20th January 2009? Obama said, “I am HUMBLED by the great task ahead…” Whereas, none of his predecessors made such a comment Obama has to appeal to his supporters, as much as acquiesce to White supremacists who would have him shot. In other words, Obama is saying to the American people, “Please DON’T SHOOT; don’t shoot me, I’m an AFRICAN AMERICAN. I want the American people to know it is not our purpose to pursue the agenda of this administration, but to pursue the voters’ agenda.”

      Given that is the case, President Obama is a pathetic leader of this great nation, which is the United States of America.

    I am an American-born Chinese teenager currently living in Beijing, and I’d just like to say that for the first time ever in my life, I’m truly ashamed of my Chinese heritage.

    I wish I could apologize to the international community for the shocking ignorance and racism seen here on behalf of all Chinese people, but I can’t. The only person I can represent is myself. Please, just no that not all Chinese people live in such blind ignorance- and as for those that do, such as the posters of many of these comments, perhaps some of the blame can be put on the society in which they were brought up in.

    There are so many things about China that are wrong or repulsive- people spitting on the street, people killing newborn females for sons, corruption, pollution, inequality- but of all the horrors I have witnessed in my two years in Beijing, this is by far the most repugnant. I’m not saying this as an American, and I’m not saying this as a Chinese person. I’m saying this as a human being with a conscience.

    I’m a teenager. I’m young, and some of you may call me naive or sheltered or stupid. But if it’s stupid to hope for a future where people are judged by their abilities and their character rather than by their skin color or their race, then fine- I’m stupid.

    And I hope everybody else is, too.

    Wow! I am a Black Woman in America. I have many Asian friends (Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Korean, Thai and Japanese). We always joke around and say I must have some Asian blood in me because I love Asian food and culture. I had been learning Mandarin (Ni Hao Ma!) and I love the language. I love my culture too. Actually I have always been proud to be a Black American but I can love other cultures too which does not detract from loving myself or my fellow brothers and sisters. And the two black young ladies on this blog who speak about black people having their own community get real and stop talking nonsense. Black people have been segregated too long and we should not be going backwards. We can support each other without cutting ourselves off. When was the last time you supported a black-owned business or mentored an at-risk child or even been a Big Sister? Before you get on your high horse and start talking about community take a look at yourself and what you have contributed to make it a better place. There is not a Black American that is not mixed in some way if your family ancestry was ever a slave you have some mixture of American Indian or white or both. We need to love one another and stop all this hatred. We all live on the same planet and at some point there will no longer be all these different races. Whether you believe in the Bible or not it talks about the Tower of Babel in the old testament which all the tribes leave and go out into the world because they can no longer understand what each other is saying. We all came from the first man and woman who were scientifically proven to be of African descent so we are all Black whether you want to acknowledge it or not. So hating black people who have never done anything to you, you are only hating yourself. I have to say I am not surprised that some Chinese are racist. My Chinese friends talk about that to me, but what I am surprised about is how this beautiful young women is being chastised and condemned for something that was beyond her control. Her mother and father will have to answer to GOD and no one else for their indiscretions. No one here is judge and jury. What are your dirty little secrets that no one knows about.     I just got back from Bahrain and almost every hotel has prostitute from china, they are the cheapest busy you can buy. They only charge $30 while other prostitute from Thailand and Russia charge between $100 to $150. Most of their customers are Black & Indians because they are so cheap.

          The Civil Rights movement was pioneered by African Americans in conjunction with the political establishment in the 1960s. Civil Rights could not have happened without consent, approval, and cooperation by the establishment. The Civil Rights movement happened because of a multiplicity of historical events, which cannot be entirely attributed to African Americans.

          According to Sociology lecturer, Dr Ian Jones of the University of Gloucestershire in England, the political establishment (USA) was preoccupied with fighting Communism in the early 1960s. To fight Communism, America needed the moral high ground in its role as leader of the free democratic world i.e. North America, Europe, and Australia; not to mention, America also competed with Russia for political influence amongst the poor developing countries in Latin America, Africa, Middle East, and Asia. The Kennedy Administration knew that USA could never have the moral high ground against the Soviets in light of the political climate of intolerance in the American Deep South. Hence, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was enacted to prohibit “discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin by federal and state governments as well as some public places”.

          Hence, it is completely misguided to assume that African Americans are SOLELY responsible for the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s, because there could not have been any social nor political reforms without consent, approval, and cooperation by the establishment.

          I think we have to be grateful that the Cold War precipitated President Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson’s historic campaign to allow landmark political reforms in America in the 1960s. Without the incessant threat of Communism there would be no reason whatever for America to implement political reform. The mainstream, political, White majority has no reason whatever to make political concessions to the Black community or to any other group, with the exception that desegregation was seen as the “lesser of two evils”. The greater evil would be that America would not be regarded as a credible leader of the Western world.

          Remember that America does not lead the world solely on the basis of it’s military power; but instead, America relies largely on “smart” power, which is a combination of “hard” (coercive military power) and “soft” power (i.e. economic sanctions or incentives and the ability to withhold or impart scientific expertise, as well as American cultural values, which is a legacy of the Age of Enlightenment in the mid 18th century to early 19th century).

          Last but not least, I think it’s misguided to compare Chinese railroad workers in the 19th century with Black American civil rights activists in the 1960s. Your assumption is, there has been no political or social change amongst the Chinese American community in Mainland USA in the one hundred years between 1852 and 1964. It is misguided to assume that ALL African Americans are “working-class” anymore than it’s right to assume that ALL Chinese Americans are low-skilled, recent migrants without any knowledge of English. But on the contrary, Chinese Americans were no more disadvantaged than African Americans nor any other group at the height of political reforms in the 1960s.

          This account of the Civil Rights movement from 1964 to date is a result of my prior interactions with Dr Ian Jones, a Visiting Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Rather than a lay person, Ian Jones knows a lot more about Race, Ethnicity & Nationality than the majority of contributors to this forum.

            Why ask a visiting sociologist from England about an American movement? Should I base my knowledge of the Chinese cultural revolution on interactions with a Japanese historian? While I’m sure Dr. Jones read a lot in British academia, there are many American sociologists who lived through it. Perhaps you should have read some of their writings as well.

            The civil rights movement preceded 1964 by several years. It actually began in 1955 according to many sources. President Eisenhower sent federal troops to Little Rock Arkansas in 1957 not to gain moral high ground against the commies but to enforce integration.

    This topic serves as a perfect reminder why China is still so far behind. It is the negative, ignorant and undereducated that continues to weigh down on China’s ability to progress and surpass its counterparts. There is only one race, that’s the Human Race. Chinese need to focus on their own affairs. What can be done to provide Chinese young ppl with higher education, provide more jobs to all these educated, yet jobless Chinese, cut down on corruption, and promote diversity? You worry about the wrong things. What Lou Jing’s mom did years ago will never affect you. You will still wake up tomorrow and have the same problems, see the same face in the mirror and have less money in your bank account than yesterday.

    Chinese are such hypocrites and they are not even smart enough to realize it. They eat up the KFC, Mc.Donald’s, Pizza Hut, make long lines around the building to eat Haagen-Dazs ice-cream during the cold winter, and go crazy over every name brand they come across, if Tommy Hilfiger placed his name on a stick, Chinese would still buy it. You buy out all the concert tickets, fill every movie theater, and bet on every basketball game and yet you don’t even realize what is happening right before your eyes. The more you grab at foreign culture the more you loose your own. Ask yourself why most Chinese companies are so quick to hire Chinese who studied abroad.

    Chinese need to stop depending on the government to provide them with temporary lands, predetermine schools, and limited access internet and begin to educate themselves.
    Education would have reminded you that it was the white Europeans who destroyed China with Opium, that during the civil rights movements that the Chinese and other Asians stood beside the Blacks as they fought and died for the rights of minorities. Talking about Minorities, that is what Chinese are in every developed country; sometimes you don’t even get counted. Most of them get to the US and hide in small shanty towns and call them China towns as a means to go unnoticed or to remain ignorant. Yet when their children are born here and are therefore Americans, OWWWW that’s another story totally. Welcome to civilization.

    Finally, I love China. I met my husband in China and thank God every day for blessing me with him. I love the people, I love the culture, and yes, I am black and proud of it. I can have my hair nappy one day and a perm the next and still look good everyday. Plus I can ignore all the negative comments because I know for a fact Chinese do love me (black) They just don’t realize how much. I can tell by the way you dress; the music you listen to, etc, etc. and all those American celebrities that you think are white like Mariah Carey, Halle Berry, etc are all black, their fathers are black men, just like Lou Jing. People lust, like, love people who make them feel like they are wanted, appreciated, loved, and respected. The girl is beautiful! Both her chinese and African American features make her so. Her mother has seemed to have done a good job by making her polite, respectable to others as well as herself. And, guess what God made her like this and there is nothing you can do about it. Why don’t you use your energies and talents to make the world respectable…or better yet yourselves.I wonder how many of you are cheating on your wives/husband?!You know you people aren’t so great.
