Shanghai To Offer Migrant Worker Children Free Education

From KDS:

What about our children?!
By the end of next year, 100% of migrant workers’ children will enjoy free compulsory education.

"Thinking back to when I used to walk past this place..."

"...I could only sneak a few peeks..."

"Today, having actually walked inside..."

"...my heart is so excited."

Shanghai strongly promoting education equalization. 67% of migrant workers' children are enrolled in public schools.

Comments from KDS:

大头鞋:

Why must they take Shanghai citizens’ tax money and give it to people from other places to use?

喜多郎:

Shanghainese children are taught by their parents from when they are small to be reasonable and have manners, so they will definitely be bullied if they are put together with hard disks raised in the wild. Looks like in the future, our children will have to start learning karate or taekwondo from when they are small.

曹启泰:

I’m afraid that my child will be made crippled by them in the future.

小荣:

If Shanghai was [like] Taiwan, how great this would be, not suffering the government’s oppression.

和谐:

We spend over a million to buy an old apartment in a good school district for our children to get an education…[poor us] Shanghainese…

[Currently, it appears that migrant worker children can go to any school near their residence, but Shanghainese children can only go to the school their hukou is located in, which is why Shanghai residents typically try to buy a house in a good school district to relocate their hukou to that school district so their children can go to that better school.]

格里高里:

Those above who want to emigrate, [some commenters threatened to leave Shanghai and emigrate elsewhere]
after you successfully emigrate,
those foreigners will say, what right do you have to come enjoy our education system, we paid a lifetime of taxes, why should we provide education to your children?

ARALE:

What will our Shanghainese children do? The children of migrant workers are even more garbage than YP children.

沈玉琳:

With everyone swarming to the developed coastal cities, what will China’s undeveloped areas do? Who will build them up?

After these children receive education in Shanghai, they will never go back to their hometown.

阿拉伐是宁:

I support it, only Shanghai’s “losers” would push out wai di ren like this.

Shanghai’s big development came from our grandfathers and grandmothers’ immigration, and the future for a people that excludes foreign cultures definitely has no hope to speak of.

fox:

For a fifth grade little girl to think of writing a letter to our great party secretary, pretty impressive…for this grade to have this kind of ability is pretty impressive…

merlot:

If they just build migrant worker schools, then fine, let them study!
Shanghai taxpayers money is no doubt important, but even more important is the healthy development of Shanghai children. If Shanghai’s good elementary, middle, and high schools carelessly let YP in, then Shanghai’s education system will really be screwed…

Kitagawa:

Hope Hong Kong and Macau will also be opened up,

to lesson the burden on Shanghai people.

BUNNY:

MLGB,
telling Shanghainese people to only have one child,
but when wai di ren have children, they have a brood,
and you want to let them go to school for free in Shanghai?!?
*******

眼科飞猪:

Those children being able to study is still better than having them run wild outside, basic elementary school enrollment is simply inadequate, this is a fact, many primary schools have been combined or closed. Moreover, migrant workers’ children has always been a [social] issue, and no matter what you say, migrant workers have still made a very large contribution to this city. There is no good reason for TF to attack this kind of issue. As for [the migrant workers] having more than one child issue…what, now you guys don’t talk about human rights and freedoms?

wolf76:

Children from outside of Shanghai receiving an education here in Shanghai and you guys are already this angry? Do they have to become illiterate for you guys to feel more balanced in your hearts, so you can think of yourselves as superior?

  1. Shanghainese have such a bad reputation. When I wrote a post about orphans who were expelled from their home by their neighbors, a lot of people started saying that Shanghainese are trash, even though everybody in the story supposedly is Shanghainese, except maybe the orphans.

  2. Ohhh damn they’ll turn our kids into docile, respectful urbanites! How will they cope with the rude, uncouth assholes from the rural areas?!

  3. This is great news and should be the rule of law in every city in China. Giving women equal access to education is the key to reducing population, birth rate, and thus global warming and every other earth destroying problem caused by overpopulation. Even though all the the “one childs” will be allowed to have two children. . China will do much better than India if it continues to encourage all woman to get good education and encourages family planning and birth control. .while India and Africa’s populations continue to spiral out of control and everyone suffers the consequences. The complaining Shanghaiese are just shortsighted bigots. Mark my words. . 20 years from now China will have made great progress while India and africa and muslim countries who don’t embrace modern values will suffer calamity.

  4. Don’t worry, the Taiwanese activists will be all over it, soon… Defending the right of Shanghainese to secede so that they won’t have to deal with dirty lower class Chinese.

    FREE SHANGHAI

  5. I let you build my house, risk your life working in terrible conditions for shocking wages, spending most of your life far away from the ones you love, do the most dangerous, dirty and degrading work that exists, clean and cook for me, collect my rubbish…so that my children and I can have a comfortable life.

On top of all this, you want your children to have an education?? You make me sick!

  6. Shanghainese are really such a dirty low, selfish form of life. Their language also sounds like pigs making love to top it all off. They often say how they are better than the YP or WDR but when its daytime its the Shanghainese I see walking around in PJ’s all day long and going HHHOOOORRR TWEEEEEECHCH on the street as well as talking the loudest in their pig language on the subway. 屌儂上海人

  7. sadly if you look at the original post, a good number of them are essentially pedophile comments about the girl in the picture. This does tell the type of person that hangs out at KDS…

  8. don’t get your conclusion so quick, if you don’t know the whole story. How did non-Shanghainese treat shanghainese? Rob, abuse, nothing else.

  9. Reading the comments here, I see people who are VERY selfish. They care only about themselves and no one else…with the mindset of people struggling to make ends meat to feed themselves and their family ITS THERE PROBLEM or ITS THEIR FAULT. With education, there is a future. With out educated citizens, the country will only go backwards and not compete in this world. EVERYONE DESERVES EDUCATION the right to learn. Shanghai is taking the step forward and other cities should follow because the countryside is where most of the population still lives. Modernization only comes with a very educated population. Yes, taxes will be higher, but in the long run it will pay off because they will be the future of China. Bunch of ignorant individuals in this world. Giving is what you need to do, to make this world a better place.

  10. Unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable. They donate money for the sichuan earthquake when everyone is watching, but they want to kick out their fellow disadvantaged Chinese who actually support the entire country working in factories, if I was Chinese I would be extremely ashamed of my country.

  11. They need to stop thinking “us shanghainese” and start thinking “us chinese.” These migrants are Chinese and what they grow up to become will reflect on China. The more children we can educate the better for the whole country. Especially if their parents are working class, then they can have a chance live a better life.

  12. wtf??!!
to those selfish cunts that dont agree on these children to study for free fuck u fuck ur whole family
stop being so selfish are u just afraid that these children are so much better than urs? they probably are
judging by u i dont think ur children would be any better probably grow up into a selfish pig that should get shot

  13. I think the ones that are against the idea should take that pole out of their asses. You guys were given an education for the wrong reason; EVERY CHILD DESERVES A DECENT EDUCATION. Migrant or not; a child should never have their education taken away from them because of their status. God knows, later down the track; you guys might actually depend on these kids. About fucking time they stopped discriminating and started educating.

  14. Wow, I cannot believe those comments made above. I think it is fantastic that the migrant children gets to go to school. EVERY child, no matter what class/social background, needs an education. I have always felt that most Shanghainese people are pompous and selfish; and these comments have proved my assumptions about them. I have always hated their attitudes about wai di ren.

By the way, the migrant workers work very hard in the upkeep and beautification of the city of Shanghai (at least what I know). If it weren’t for them, Shanghai would not be Shanghai.

  15. Wow you people who talk about WD children like they are savages should be really ashamed of yourselves. What makes a Shanghainese person better than a migrant worker? Last I checked you, we, are all Chinese. When you work and pay taxes, you are paying it for the betterment of the country, not just your own children. The future of the country is in the hands of all Chinese children, period!

  16. Shanghaiese treat migrant workers the way many westerners treat Chinese as a whole. Looked down on for being dirty and gruff. Shanghaiese are westernized.

  17. I don’t find it amazing at all that the Chinese band together or separate, associate or disassociate based upon the interest of the moment. People band together on some common ground against some common “enemy” or “danger” all the time. This is just another example.

Jones, are you in China? How long have you been in China? I think for many people who have been in China for some time and genuinely tried to learn about the place, they quickly realize that China isn’t one monolithic entity. Regionalism and classism exists here as it does anywhere else. There is absolutely nothing surprising or amazing as a Chinese person appealing to Chinese unity for one thing and then turn around and snub his nose at another Chinese person for some reason or another. It’s for different reasons. Yeah, its still kinda hypocritial, but realistically…

We’re all humans, right, Jones? Yet you value your distinction of not being “CHINESE”, right?

  18. I think the earthquake generosity and this storie are completely different.

People only help others if somehow it results in a net benefit for themselves or at least break even. If you give a little money to help save people in a far off place, it maybe cost you part of your lunch for a couple of days but in return you get a feeling that you have done something good. The amount you give depends on how much the opportunity cost of the money you give and how much you value the feeling of having done something good.

However in this case the cost of supporting this policy is perhaps their own children’s quality of education and therefore their future (as they see it). Which to them is too higher price to pay for a immediate good feeling and perhaps a long term benefit they are too shortsighted to see.

    It’s perfectly rational

  19. So should I make the example of moving between the States in America? the resident tuition and non-resident tuition?!

  20. Go ahead, make your example.

I dont see how it relates the subject in hand, but give us all a laugh :)

  21. beverly hillbillies? now that’s comedy

  22. I did a little bit of research:

    http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local-beat/Attacked-Asian-Students-Fear-Returning-to-Class-78652997.html

“Tensions between black and Asian students at the school erupted in a series of assaults last week”

“The school, with some 1,200 students, is 70 percent black and 18 percent Asian.”

I was correct in presuming that it was blacks responsible. White people don’t hate people for being intelligent, black people do. Imagine how humiliated you’d feel as a simpleminded black if some Chinamen who were just as poor as you came and topped all the classes in your school, making you look extremely stupid?

Whites are typically smart enough to realise that attacking the Asians would make them look even more stupid.

Whites are typically smart enough to realise that they could compete with the Asians if only they worked harder and took their education more seriously.

The average American black has an IQ below 90, the average American black hates intellectuals and worships criminals.

The average black will be raised by a single mother because his parents had no sense of responsibility or impulse control.

The average American black blames white people for all their problems even though other racial groups were just as poor and discriminated against.

The blacks of America tried to destroy Koreatown LA in 1992 because they were jealous of the fact that Koreans had come to America with nothing and ended up owning half the ghetto in a short period of time.

It is true that not all blacks are bad but in America there is such a strong correlation between blackness and barbarous behavior that it is only natural for parents to want to protect their children from them.

  23. Maybe… but this specific case is in South Philly High School. Go on, take a guess how many rednecks there are.

    http://www.greatschools.org/cgi-bin/pa/other/2109#students

  24. “I’ve been to a private school before and they were just as many disruptive people in the class as their were in public schools.”

So you admit yourself that you don’t know what it’s like to attend an American public school? Have you ever left your gated community rich boy? Have you ever spoken to a typical black instead of the children of sportsmen and rappers you may have met at your fancy private school? It is the American middle class who suffers at the hands of blacks and it is wealthy insulated men like you who are too ignorant to give a damn.

If I ran America, I would force people like you to spend a year working at a KFC in the ghetto and then I would force you to write a 10,000 page essay about diversity.

  25. Pusan Playa, your answers show that you’re clearly not only limited to being “classist” but you’re one hell of a racist too.

“It is the American middle class who suffers at the hands of blacks”

You seem to act like you’re pretty educated on American history. Well read a bit more about a thing called slavery in America and then reply.

  26. Agreed,

I can’t take my g/f to Korea(for a few weeks) to visit our friends because she has the wrong Hukou.

    PAIN IN THE ASS…

  27. I guess you are speaking of North Korea, since in South Korea the system has been abolished.

  28. Blaeh,

I can’t take my CHINESE girlfriend to South Korea because she has the WRONG Chinese hukou..

  29. Our name IS our mission statement!! Ha Ha!!
See I try to say something nice and this is what happens. ;-)

  30. there is such a strong correlation between blackness and barbarous behavior… this much resembles the strong correlation of being korean and stupid… very scientific, mind you.

  31. Pusan Playa, your ignorance is showing.

  32. You can’t travel to South Korea unless you have a hukou from a big city such as Beijing or Shanghai. If you REALLY REALLY want to go you can join a travel group for 15 days. Mind you they keep an eye on you and can face penalties if you go on a joy ride.

THe rule is complete bull shit.

  33. The average well off Chinese and expats living in Shanghai do not send their kids to public schools. They would send their kids to international schools which typically cost roughly 200k RMB/yr.

BTW that’s what the rich folks from all of the world do.
