“Zhejiang University Girl” Exposed By Human Flesh Search

Last week, there was a controversy about some comments a Zhejiang University professor made about Chinese girls who are willing to date foreign men:

The education system should help China have self-respect. However, these days when we see foreigners, we lower our heads. When girls see foreign trash or average foreign men, they all want to please them [become friends, attract]. Comrades, what lack of dignity we have in front of foreigners. Amongst those studying abroad at Japan’s Tokyo University, I was the only one who returned [to China], yet the Japanese people held me in high regard because I have soul/spirit and live with integrity.

When a netizen named “Zhejiang University Girl” responded and criticized Professor Zheng Qiang, the controversy became a very hot topic on many Chinese BBS forums. Many overseas Chinese also heard about the story through oversease Chinese media. “Zhejiang University Girl” explained in her reply why the best Chinese girls seek foreign men instead of Chinese men. She talked about many things, but most people will probably only remember penis sizes and orgasms.

I was too sick to translate her response when I saw this last week, so here are some parts from the translation that ChinaGeeks posted on April 13:

On the evening of April 11th, through the human flesh search of netizens, the person who concocted “Zhejiang University Girl” came forward to apologize. The netizen passing as Zhejiang University Girl is “河谷渔风” ["He Gu Yu Feng"], from Jinhua in Zhejiang province, a male, born 1976 December 17. He admitted “Zhejiang University Girl” was fabricated.

Reporters contacted and interviewed “河谷渔风”. “Writing this post was simply a fenqing vent. In the beginning it was posted on Tianya, there was no intention to target Zhejiang University, and even less to point at Professor Zheng Qiang.”

“河谷渔风” told reporters that the intial reason for writing the post came during a trip in Hangzhou where, on the public busses, shopping malls, and other places, he continuously saw over ten pairs of lovers, all composed of foreign young men with good-looking Chinese university girls, that made him especially upset at the time.

“I was just expressing some of my own thoughts through the internet, and simply used the identity of a Zhejiang University Girl to increase the effect/reactions. Had I known before that this post would incite such a large averse effect, I definitely would not have posted it.” “河谷渔风” expressed, with regards to his moment of impulse, feeling very ashamed with his behavior.

“My telephone number, QQ number, mailbox, Tianya ID have all not changed, and I accept the criticism from all sides. I know that one must accept the consequences of doing something wrong.” “河谷渔风” expressed that the virtual world of the internet have given people the freedom of speech, but the consequences of that freedom of speech are not virtual.

This news was also on Sohu and NetEase. The article also includes Professor Zheng Qiang criticizing the mainstream media for failing to determine the authenticity of the incident:

“This false news report harmed Zhejiang University’s female students, harmed the current generation of female univeristy students, and harmed the common people.” Zheng Qiang expressed that Zhejiang’s mainstream media, through “false”, “slander”, and “defamatory” news reporting, has created a large averse effect for Zhejiang University.

“I hope the media can bear even more responsibility for society, and build good social mores.” Professor Zheng Qiang said this incident serves as a lesson for the media.

    “Is it cheap for a Chinese to travel abroad?” To answer your question, yes it is. So what you were trying to say about foreigners traveling to China? That they have enough to afford a $1000 one way ticket? That makes them oh-so-very-rich! You must have either lived 50 years behind time, or doesn’t know what you’re talking about.
    
    Another thing is remember if someone was doing so well in their own ‘developed’ country, why would they seek resort in a ‘developing’ country at the first place? I mean I can understand if it’s the opposite way around, they want to make more money in the ‘developed’ nation.
    
    Of course what I’m saying does not include students that are learning Chinese. No matter how ‘successful’ you may be are now, the fact that you had to find a new country to ‘thrive’ in, in the first place, means that you did have had some problems, usually financially, that has ‘forced’ you to ‘teaching English’, because some schools in China don’t even ask you for a BA degree, as long as you don’t look Chinese, they’ll hire you for above average wages (in China). Good on you if you’re teaching English and has a BA degree (and it’s really your native tongue), but look at it, would you have really moved out of your country if you could find a job in your home country that paid equally as well (now think cost of living wise, not just pure numbers!)?
    
    Now, if you were a little more ‘literate’ and ‘civilized’, why would you then started to attack nothing else but physical and racial appearances? I’m Chinese myself and find it rather disgusting that you compare races like this. Sure, Chinese might have not won as much Noble prizes as white men, because the prize originally started in Europe and didn’t include any academics in Asian nations until much later, sure China may not have the best sportsmen, but the overall achievement is better than most ‘developed’ countries.
    
    Just to make myself clear, regardless of physical appearance and skin color (why didn’t you mention ‘brown’ too? I’d say they’re the least talked about ‘skin color’), there’s always the rotten ones.
    
    Oh and, Asian girls put on make up to make their faces ‘whiter’ and draw their eyes ‘larger’ does not make them “wannabe white people”. It’s simply wanting to look prettier. Different people have a different perception of beauty, and so does each different race. To put it bluntly, Chinese girls putting thick layers of white powder on their face is the same as American girls doing a fake tan to appear ‘bronze’. Now, why don’t you say that they’re trying to appear Asian because they’re making their skin darker?

    While I admit, not just Chinese, but east Asians in general (Japanese, Koreans), are somewhat slightly more racist against African-Americans or ‘black people’. This is merely because our countries have been racially homogeneous for thousands of years, and when there were first real contact with people of a different skin color, it’s the ‘white people’ or Caucasians, in comparison to countries such as America, Australia and the UK (etc.), where a mix large of race have always resided in for centuries.     I am Black and my wife is from southern china. We have been together for almost 10 years. I love her family and she loves mine. I treat her mother like my own mom. Her brother and I are close as friends…we are tight. My brother treats my wife as a younger sister. My sister and wife are like twins; short, cute, love to cook , gossip, have fun and love their husbands. I am not rich, but i take very good care of my wife (thank you very much). We work hard, travel, value our friends and live life to be happy. I can’t speak to the dynamics white and Chinese relationships because i am not white. But i think Black Americans and some Chinese have much in common. Both have experienced poverty and understand having to work hard in the face of oppression or unfair and circumstance. For my Chinese brothers who don’t like seeing “their women” with other men, I say hey.. I understand. It’s a sense of rejection, why them over me, or cultural pride. But at some point you have to get past resentment. To be fair, I have met a few Chinese men that go crazy for white and Black women (which dose not bother me in the least, I say mix and mingle more power to you.) so what is good for men should be the same for women. Some of the resentment over this topic (Chinese and Blacks) is a cover for jealousy and envy. If couples are happy leave them alone, go find a woman or man of your own.

As a “foreigner” who is (very happily) married to a Chinese woman I unsuprisingly don’t think other people’s relationships are anyone’s business. People may have bad or shallow reasons for whomever they date but it REALLY doesn’t matter.

Anyone who cares about foreigners dating “their” women needs to take a look at themselves and figure out why they care about something like this because the real problem is in them, not in anyone else.

  the probability for a “better” (<–needs to be defined) homosapien is definitely there by combining say a difference racial pool with another. But the probability for a “inferior” (<–needs to be defined) homospaien is there too. Also, humans have been exchanging their genes on a global level for tens of thousands of years, therefore, I doubt this mix of one race with another in today’s global gene pool will necessarily produce a “superior” (<–needs to be defined) homosapien.     Yes, mankind have been exchanging their genes for tens of thousands of years. But I don’t believe that we were exchanging at a global level multirace at the current speed. Before the Machinery Evolution, how many percentage of a “pure gene” population could have chance to escape out of its original gene pool? At most, I could say that multiracial relationship hasn’t developed until within 300 years. Moreover, may be the bad genes homosapien is still there, but considerably at a lower rate of 2:1. On an overall level of structure, the process of sperms going to eggs to start an embryo that selects the weak, unhealthy sperms left behind and only the better sperms would be able to meet the eggs to form a fetus.   You’re forgetting that there’s a difference in self-perception and thus self-confidence between Americans and Chinese. It is arguable that Americans in general are pretty self-assured. Why? Because of their American national identity. America, after all, is the dominant military, economic, and (pop-) cultural entity in the world. You don’t usually cop an inferiority complex if you’re aware that others associate you with that.
  
  The Chinese, on the other hand, may often suffer from an inferiority complex borne from the fact that their nation is still developing, largely poor, and burdened with a history of “those white fuckers fucked us!” What’s a Chinese guy going to say to his prey? “Hey baby, I’ve got 5000 years of continuous history!” The best thing he’s got is “What to check out my fireworks?”
  
  Of course, the Chinese need to overcome their own insecurities on their own, but it’ll take time, and it’ll certainly involve their national identity just as the self-perception of French (lovers), Italians (romantics), or British (gentlemen) identify with their’s.

I am a foreigner who lives in mainland China for many years, and happily married to a Chinese woman.

My experience:

I seldom can see a truly happy marriage and relationship between two Chinese around. One is always suffering from some kind of suppression.

The mixed couples I know all have been living in China, and has absolutely no intention to immigrate
overseas.

The foreigner man in the mixed couples usually not really well off even to mainland standards.

After dating some Chinese girls in my past years, NONE of them was able to date a Chinese man again – I wish I was that good, but I am afraid that is not the point.

Frankly I don’t know ANYONE foreign who feels superior to Chinese guys. Maybe that says more about who I choose to be friends with but it is still a fact. It always makes me uncomfortable when I hear Chinese guys express this sort of sentiment. It makes the person saying it look weak. It is not true so don’t claim it.
    
    You can go around and around in circles pointing out this thing bad about some group or that thing bad about another group but that proves nothing. This white guy cheats, that chinese guy cheats, this white guy is nasty that chinese guy is nasty… surely you can see that this is an endless circle that leads nowhere and is not accurate or helpful in any way?
    
    As for someone marrying someone and moving in to less money… so what? Money is not so important in life. Caring so much about it is a mistake. Much more important is being happy and money rarely plays a role in true happiness.

It’s easy to see where the professor is coming from, though he was too general in his criticism. There are some Chinese girls who will approach practically any foreign man and try to get a date. Not surprisingly, a lot of the guys who respond to such reckless behavior are themselves reckless or of poor moral quality.   I remember meeting one of my wife’s aunts for the first time. She lives in Taiyuan (not so many foreigners there) and after meeting me said to my mother-in-law (who immediately called me and told me) “Why, he’s not a playboy at ALL! He was very nice.” I guess she expected me to be some horny caricature of a white devil… not sure. Frankly, I’m the one who usually ends up saying “No thanks, not tonight” when the Chinese guys I’m with suggest a little “relaxation” after a night of drinking.
  
  The whole foreigner as “playboy” thing is a bit overplayed, I think. Though I WILL say that our (foreigners) attitude towards sex and dating is (was? I haven’t dated in a while) certainly more liberal than the typical Chinese. I suspect that today’s Chinese youth are not nearly so conservative as the slightly older generation (I don’t really know for certain) but I know that Americans who were college students in the early 1990′s were much more liberal in sex and dating than Chinese of that same period.

  Losing face yes, but not with the general public. It wasn’t a secret. The guys would go drinking with their friends or coworkers. Some of these guys were working middle class, some were upper class, ran factories and stuff, and some even owned their own sucesful business. The wives knew. A wife came into the hotel I was staying at looking for her husb once, her husb worked in the hotel.

  I see a lot of argument that begins with the assumption that only the Western European concept of romantic love is the “correct” concept of love.
  
  Try a little cultural awareness. Practically speaking, more than one woman means trouble in any relationship, sure, but here the very act itself means different things in Chinese vs. Western cultures.
  
  In China’s culture, it was historically acceptable for a man to have multiple wives, whereas in European cultures monogamy has historically been the norm. Mistresses were always illegal in Western culture and thus more stigmatized. Therefore a Western man who knows this, yet still goes after other women, is doing something different than the man who seeks a second wife in a culture that has recognized second wives as an institution for thousands of years.
  
  It’s too simple to argue, “I’ve seen Chinese guys get with other women; this proves they aren’t committed to their families.” The same act means different things depending on cultural context. It’s entirely possible for an act to be inconsistent with family obligations when performed by one man in one culture and consistent when performed by another in another culture (and for another act which WOULD be inconsistent for the second man to be perfectly in line for the first.)
  
  Put another way: would you aim this criticism at, say, African tribesmen with multiple wives and use it as “evidence” that they are not committed to their families? Or would you be more willing to accept that their culture simply is different and having many women does not in any way mean that such a man is not committed to his family and home?

    Well, if you count the fact that 70% of the medal count was by women, and that about 80% of those medals were by contest judged by officials ….. hmmmm, then you can you can maybe say they are strong.
    
    And strangly enough (I am a former competative Olympic athlete)all the urine tests were taken by the host country to IOC officials…. seems kinda fishy when Olympic weight lifting medals are being won by women laced with acne all over their faces and outlifting everyone else by 10-20 kilos….

  Actually, there has been a tradition like that in various places, but for the most part it died out a long time ago. The only exception I can think of are the “fundamentalist” Mormons. I believe that the federal authorities raided a compound of such Mormons a while back concerning that practice, but I didn’t follow the details and I think the whole raid became a mess.

At the same time, even though having a “second wife” is a cultural tradition in China, it doesn’t mean that even all or most Chinese people think it’s “right”. Talking about the modern sense of 二奶… most Chinese people, even the guys who have one, would say it’s wrong.

    Mike, you’re right that something isn’t “okay” just because a culture or society does it. However, I know Anonymous is not arguing about right or wrong, but the concept of social norms.
    
    Having a second wife is widely considered “wrong” (or “not okay”) in China as well. In fact, it is technically illegal and there are no legally institutionalized or sanctioned second/third/etc. wives. They’re all technically mistresses, satisfy the definition of infidelity, and grounds for divorce. However, just because a culture widely condemns having second wives doesn’t mean having second wives can’t still be a notable phenomenon. It could be widely condemned amongst some social groups yet also widely tolerated amongst other social groups. It could be widely condemned amongst most social groups in public yet be tolerated amongst some social groups in private.
    
    Both can exist at the same time, and both could be considered social attitudes or even norms. What Anonymous is trying to get you to consider is that contradicting social attitudes towards infidelity by men in China may result in Chinese people feeling less strongly or simply differently about the issue of infidelity than you do or your culture does.
    
    As a result, you may find it utterly reprehensible and completely unacceptable, while they may likewise think it is bad, but have come to tolerate it because of sociological inertia.

As China grows stronger and the average Chinese becomes more prosperous, the attraction only becomes stronger. It’s been pretty satisfying in the past 10 years to see critics of China continually stifled and ignored, and many foreigners now come to China to make a living, and contributing to its strengthening…

I have to say that I do find the offensive comments above relevant to the subject at hand. Yes they are exaggerated, but not more than “professor” Zheng’s comments or the purported Zhejiang U girl’s post.

Anyone ever thought about how hard it is to find a mate in China and that the “outstandingness” of foreigners makes them easy and apparant rather than having to sort through the millions of mediocre, normal, average, so-so guys, just like if a guy is super fit, handsome, drives a nice car, has a good smile, dresses well, has good hair, whatever. They stand out, so they are an easy target.

To all the over judgemental Chinese men on here… this is what my foreign friend said about this

“I’d love to meet you in public and show you what a real man is… I’ve been married to my Chinese wife for 10 years, we have a great kid, I’ve built her family a house, I’m polite to strangers, give my seat on the bus, have never spit or littered, don’t drink or smoke, have never whored around, and contributed more to this country than 99% of you ever will. I don’t get in your business so don’t fucking get in mine.”

  Wow, so much going on in this post….
  I just want to throw in my 10 cents here. As I was reading what your friend said, Fish, I thought I should point you all in the direction of a TV series I’ve been addicted to – “Mad Men”. It takes place in the 50′s and 60′s in America. Not such a long time ago, but it’s like a different world, a different culture. Take a look at it, and then try to gain some perspective on how a culture develops. Realize that it doesn’t happen overnight. Changes, real changes, take time to happen. Even in China, the place of rapid amazing change, we can’t expect everything to be perfect only 30 years after the end of one of the most tumultuous periods any country in the world has ever gone through. While I don’t know your friend (he may have been provoked into finally spewing that out at someone after years of patience), it’s that kind of cultural superiority and lack of any sort of understanding that makes me avoid the expat crowd.

    Why does it have anything to do with being an expat? Isn’t it just about it being their business and them being able to tell the person who gets in that business where they stand and that they should fuck off? If a person or persons walks up and judges you based on some petty little shallow thing and gets it all completely wrong, what does it have to do with cultural superiority to tell them they are an ignorant douchebag?
    
    There are tens of millions of civil polite non-judgemental uneducated farmers in China who would never say an unkind word to a foreigner or get in their business. So when some blog trolling pseudo-educated rich city boy starts attacking foreigners over the non-issue of “all foreigners steal our women”, I could see why those foreigners might think those other guys are pricks and it have nothing to do with being some mean culturally insensitive “expat”.
    
    Some issues are about telling assholes to fuck themselves, plain and simple. Nothing about race, class, or gender just about “fuck you, mind your own business!”.
    
    On a side note… why are foreigners in certain places or certain foreigners in certain places called expats but in others they’re not? How often in New York do you hear Pakistani taxi drivers being called expats? or the Nepali guards in HK? or the Cameroonians France? Sounds like a loaded term to me.

      I agree with giving over-judgmental and intrusive people of any race or culture a verbal smackdown. There was just something about the quote you gave that set me off I guess – I’ve heard LOTS of foreigners here in Beijing talk that way when not at all provoked, and in general my experience has been that most foreigners will jump at the chance, in any conversation about China or the way Chinese people are, to offer an opinion similar to what your friend said, and in a way that to me sounds culturally arrogant. Maybe I need to expand my social circle…
      
      I’m not sure about where the term comes from historically speaking, but “expat” is short for “expatriate”, just meaning someone who is away from their own country. It was shortened (like many other words in English) for convenience, but I think your right in that has become a little bit loaded. When I hear the word “expat” I think of a bunch of silver haired guys with their shirts half unbuttoned, gold necklaces, a much too young Chinese girl on his arm, drinking wine and complaining loudly about “things not being like they are back home”. Sounds like a stereotype, but I’ve actually seen this with my own eyes on more than one occasion, and not on Halloween (although it would make an excellent costume, come to think of it).

It’s because of guys like you defending some douchebag pinpacking, lying weasel in zhejiang uni, that FDLR feels as aggro as he does.
That asshole owes LAOWAIS an apology first and foremost! He is the kind of a-hole that makes walking down the street uncomfortable for a mixed couple in this country.

Tell you what though… I have noticed that when someone tries to tread on me, I usually go hate-f@ck one of their women. And after I am done making niu-bi-chuar with them… they usually come back…and back again.

I actually wrote a paper on this topic recently…to summarize, people like the exotic for many reasons, most of which are subconscious.

Sure some girls are just sluts. As an educated, tall, average-looking white man I could lay almost any girl I want here (and this really isn’t me being egotistical). From sly comments to girls actually saying “can i come over”, its just that easy. It’s hard to be honest here and you need an iron will to keep your dick in your pants. The foreigners here in China know what I’m talking about.

Instead I have a girl I have loved for more than 4 years. An average-looking, short, educated girl who doesn’t want to emigrate. I am learning the language, I know the history and culture. I am a China-”lifer”. So that makes me an ass, a trashy foreigner who just came to China to get laid?

The problem is painting everyone with the same brush. Despite the ability to carve numerous notches on my belt, I don’t. And it pisses me off when Chinese say shit to my girlfriend about her being a slut or that she thinks she is better than Chinese. If there was no risk of deportation I would punch each one.

Low blow time (I need one cheap shot….despite my comment about not painting everyone with the same brush =P): at least with me she can get married for love…not because some Chinese guy knocked her up because he is too stupid to use a condom, or doesn’t even know what a condom is

I don’t understand why the educator/professor from the university gets off so lightly with his dialogue. It is his remarks that stir the hatred, and deter social development. Look at the thread; it all comes back to the same old same china guy/white guy chest beating. He must be reincarnated of a German brown shirt that used to say the same things about Germans dating Jews. The dating seen is at least out and open, with women making their own choices.

Why can’t he make a public comment on the open abuse of uneducated, poor girls that are living the life of the red lantern hairdresser? Where is the public outcry, that so many local girls being used so openly?
