  6. What is it with the color green and infidelity in China? I seem to remember there was something about “working in a building with green pillars” making one a prostitute…

Now something about green hats? Are there any more weird sayings like that? Does the word for green have other meanings that make these sayings some sort of pun?

    • Green: that green damn internet filter software.

I think thats the joke. CCP like “green”.

But I may be wrong, “Green” may refer to the long tradition of Mao’s suit.

      Can someone who knew confirm?

    • The rumor is that men who used to work in brothels as attendants wore green hats. I don’t know about green pillars though–first I’ve heard.

    • the connection with prostitute is due to brothel in ancient China are call green building (Qing Lou. but, the word Qing can actually mean green or blue) Much like how the west refer to them as red light district.

      • Interesting and very helpful, thanks!

I understand that the green/blue distinction isn’t made in a number of languages and that linguists have theories about when languages develop various distinctions.

So in that respect, it appears that Qing is about like the Japanese word aoi, which (historically) can mean either green or blue (e.g. both grass, the sky, and the green light on traffic lights all get called ‘aoi’), even though modern Japanese has a word for green (midori).

        • Super late reply.

I know that “have a green hat” means when ur wife has gone with another guy.

I’ve heard it’s because soldiers being out so long often have this happening. And soldiers green hats.
