Shanghai Schoolgirl Beating & Human Flesh Search

shanghai-schoolgirl-beating

A “human flesh search” (人肉搜索 rén ròu sōu suǒ) is when netizens gather online through BBS forums, social networks, chat room, or instant messaging to collaborate on a common task, such as finding information about a person.

From NetEase:

Shanghai Nanhu Vocational School violent beating of schoolmate’s Xiong Jiaqing human flesh searched

Xiong Jiaqing, female, Sister Xiong, violent Xiong, student of Hongkou district’s Nanhu Vocational School, No. 2 Branch campus. On October 23, the “Shanghai XuHui District girl fight, watch and be angry” video spread on the internet, a single girl standing in the middle of an alley, while another girl charges from behind with a flying kick to her lower back, and when the first girl is on the ground, the second girl uses her foot to stomp on the other’s stomach…. Human flesh searched by netizens, the attacker turns out to be Xiong Jiaqing. This name has sparked heated discussion on Shanghai’s well-known BBS discussion forums, with everyone one after another expressing anger against the girl who did the beating.

October 23 evening, netizens were sharing a video about Shanghai girls fighting on a certain video website, about 5 minutes and 20 seconds long. The video shows, within an alley, a girl wearing a purple t-shirt and looks like a middle-school student beats up another girl. The bystanders in the video repeatedly speak to each other in Shanghainese, and refer to the attacker as “Sister Xiong”.

In the video, “Sister Xiong” continuously slaps the other girl’s face, pull her hair, and charges from behind to slam into the girl…during this time, one person even lights a cigarette for “Sister Xiong”, even says “just a little is enough, no need to go too far”.  The victim from beginning to end does not fight back, allowing “Sister Xiong” to hit and yell at her.

This video sparked intense discussion amongst netizens, with everyone one after another criticizing “Sister Xiong” as too violent. “Truly without proper upbringing”, “Why are children these days like this?”, “Why didn’t they call the police”…many netizens expressed sympathy for the girl who was beaten. One netizen analyzes: “Young, don’t think, like to be the center of attention, emulating Young and Dangerous, thinking being feared means having face, it is very easy for these thinking patterns to be magnified in situations with a lot of people, and with a group of people provoking, encouraging you to do certain things, irrational behaviors happen.” He believes the girl who was beaten can accuse/sue “Sister Xiong” for intentional injury crime.

Xiong Jiaqing’s reasons for the beating: The girl who was beaten stole Xiong Jiaqing’s boyfriend, so Xiong Jiaqing was taking revenge.

Comments from NetEase:

0919tm:

A violent girl.

huangxiaonvr:

Such a malicious girl, truly should be painfully beaten. So small yet already so hateful, a harm to society, no proper upbringing.

wkk-0088:

A garbage school’s garbage, what else can we expect? Were she from Fudan University or Jiaotong University, then it might be strange.

Nichole:

…there have truly been too many of this kind of campus violence incidents lately…[they, the government, society] are always emphasizing ethical/moral education, but I don’t know just what the hell they are actually teaching…

ji-xian-feng:

The internet’s power is incredible! *sweat*~~~~

wxh0793:

Kill her! [I] sorely hate all who use their strength to bully the weak!

liangyongand:

A human who is not human…trash amongst trash…

狼族之王:

MD, bring her to me, I want to use my foot to gang rape her for an hour.

zhangli13591:

Pig headed, pig brained, pig bodied!

fuyaolin:

Human scum, seeing this video makes me really want to beat her up. Retards. Children these days are out of control. I hope the schools can do something. Everyone has children. If in the future your children encounter this kind of insult, what would you do? Such a travesty.

The following were posted today…

From KDS:

English version of Sister Xiong Incident already organized, those with good English come help take a look

“(CNN iReport, Shanhgai, China)A video clip documenting a juvenile school girl bullying a peer student has triggered another outburst of controversy among wired citizens in urban Shanghai, China’s leading metropolitan center and economic hub.

In KDS Life Forum, a local website well-known for bolstering parochialism and anti-communism, myriad netizens were appalled by the brutality and arrogance exhibited by a high-school-aged female student. Throughout this 5-min video clip, likely to be cast in a downtown neighborhood, the girl resorts every possible means in beating and scoffing at another girl, with the support of a company of 6 other adolescents.

The angry netizens unanimously condemn at such behavior and call for the human flesh search engine to find out the identity of the naughty girl. Her personal information is soon released and many people threaten to take the justice into their own hands to punish the girl for such horrific behavior. Monday, October the 26th is considered by these people to be the “judgement day” for Xiong Jiaqing, the violent girl who is believed to be attending a vocational school in Shanghai.

Teenage violence has become a widespread social problem among China’s post-90s’ generation. Many people argue that too much parental cosset and lack of concern for others are two major causes for the negligence and irresponsibility among the spoiled generation. Reckless behavior as such are often berated by those older youth, or post-80s’ group, who claim to be the mainstream of the Chinese society and on the opposite of their younger partners.”

Today afternoon, KDS bandits, executed “Operation Bear Slaughter” (or “Bear Slaughter Meeting”) and went to Nanju Vocational School (1 & 2):

A KDS member, 专业旁白员, criticizes the KDS human flesh search and other KDS members:

From KDS: (deleted)

This Nanhu human flesh search incident, shows KDS [members/community] level is not high

Netizens’ are mixed with regards to human flesh search, with some people believing this is mob violence and invasion of privacy. Some people believe this is the expression of morals and justice.

[I] believe, both sides have their points, but the main thing is to look at who is being targeted?

From Tianya’s human flesh search of Nanjing’s 9-5 Emperor to XCar’s current human flesh search of the entrapment case [good news: update], both have left people satisfied. The reason is because fundamentally, these represent the opposition of the people to the bureaucracy.  Against the government’s dark cover-ups and powerful but unfair/unjust systems, citizens have the right and duty to engage in opposition. (Even if it is only expression on the internet). Because rights are stronger than the powerful government departments, these corrective actions of the people are needed, so they can be improved and impartial. That is why these are brave and just human flesh searches.

However this KDS human flesh search of “Sister Xiong”, there are even people who want to go do some slaughter Xiong [Bear] meeting/gathering. [I] think the so-called valiant bandits of KDS bandits can now only be the bandits of the internet. The reason is because bandits only dare to be with other bandits, like poor people fighting each other.

Sister Xiong’s actions are indeed wrong. The way to punish her is to send this video and these pictures to her school, parents, and let her guardians and school make the corresponding punishments. It should not instead be carrying out human flesh search on KDS and instigating the masses to go punish this Sister Xiong. The bandits on KDS have no right to go punish a minor.
The character of this kind of human flesh search is no different from the character of the Red Guards conducting public denouncements back in the day.

2008 October 28 UPDATE:

Photos of the girl who was beaten were shared around the internet. Here are two pictures from NetEase and Mop:

schoolgirl-beating-victim-01schoolgirl-beating-victim-02

Some netizens say the second picture shows that the victim is not necessarily a good girl who deserves too much sympathy.

In this NetEase post, the latest news about this incident is that Sister Xiong has acknowledged her mistake and her school will not expel her.

      • Do you?

hiv-lol. DO you have a hiv?

  • billy joel

If someone dosn’t stand up for themselves who am I to comment?

  • Crystal

I don’t understand why no one tries to stop her. People are just standing by chilling and recording like it’s nothing. Don’t tell me one of those boys couldn’t hold that girl back.

    • Rick in China

Are you serious? Were you…like…..homeschooled, or just completely oblivious to society & youth violence?

      • Teacher in China

To be honest Rick, I found the last thing in the video to be pretty brutal. I wasn’t homeschooled and I’ve never seen anything like that before. Usually in schools I’ve seen two people fighting while a crowd watches, sure; they’re working out a problem and no one wants to get involved, even if the fight is pretty one-sided (although someone would step in if it all went way too far). But standing and cheering while someone does a drop kick to the back like that which could easily result in serious serious injury…I too can’t understand why someone wouldn’t try to stop it.

        • Alan

I too can’t understand why someone wouldn’t try to stop it.

TIC, it’s the “mei banfa” let’s not lose face, go with the herd mentality. Better not be the sheep that raises it’s head, easier to just baa along with the rest of them….sadly:(

            http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IedbzK7lFFk

Hey look it took 2 seconds to find video of a kid getting beat up in America with no one stepping in to help.

I guess it’s that evil capitalist, individualist “every man for himself, F the little guy” mentality, huh?

Oh but I forgot, racist simpletons such as yourself only blame the race when it’s not yours.

          • Alan

            To Rcheck below:

I never said that America (of which I am NOT a national!), was perfect, did I?

I never said China all BAD, the west all GOOD?!

I was merely saying noone in China ever steps into help, ever. If you have ever lived here for more than a few months you would notice that facet of life here.

Sure people won’t get involved in the west either, but I value that individualist mentality far more than following the herd and being a good sheep.

          • http://cnreviews.com Kai

            Alan,

noone in China ever steps into help, ever.

Really, Alan? No one? Ever? Ever?

Come on, man, you JUST tried defending yourself by not making indefensible statements…and then you go ahead and make another.

Look, I (and I gather, we) know what you’re alluding to with this statement of your’s, but there are plenty of instances of Chinese people stepping in to help in China, some of which have been covered on this website in previous posts. Your statement here has more to do with your desire to continue believing your statement than any basis in fact. Ask yourself if your first thought was:

            A) “People shouldn’t do this”, or
            B) “Chinese shouldn’t do this”.

It’ll help us determine whether you care more about discouraging this kind of behavior amongst people in general, or if you care more about how you can use it to make indefensible statements about Chinese society vis a vis some other society, perhaps the one you identify with.

It’s one thing to comment on bad news, it’s another thing to comment on an entire society and people on the basis of bad news alone. This kind of shit shouldn’t happen, period. Let’s agree on that instead of trying to make it seem like this shit only happens in China. This has more to do with reckless youth and bad parenting than it does with race or nationality.

          • Chandra

You just unwittingly described the bystander effect Alan, something popularized by Kitty Genovese in the “individualist” West. Congratulations, you’ve discovered that humans are really more similar than we all thought.

          • http://cnreviews.com Kai

            pug,

No one here is denying the point that people, including Chinese, too often act like sheep and/or fail to act when they should. What we’re pushing back against is Alan saying:

I was merely saying noone in China ever steps into help, ever.

Please don’t misrepresent our objections. Do you want to defend Alan’s statement here? Or are you wise enough to know how indefensible it is?

    • FYIADragoon

Its a dissapointing aspect of Chinese society. From what I understand, this additionally occurs in Japanese society. I’m not too knowledgeable on Korean schooling, so I couldn’t speak for them. I wouldn’t personally be able to stand by and watch something like this, but the average person in Chinese schools isn’t so brave (or in my case, probably foolish).

    • Tony

To be honest, stepping is kinda hard. There is this complete system, these punks can take advantage off. When I was taking highschool, since i took martial arts, i stepped into fights alot to help the weaker kids alot. And i recall one time I and the guy I am fighting broke the window and we both have to get suspended. Well, the principal and my teacher know I wasn’t at fault so they didnt wrote it down on my record. But they still have to get me suspended just in case the “punk” parents dont complain the school system is unfair? Like wtf. After we came back, i heard from my friends that he just didnt bully other kids when I am around, but still do it. honestly, we are living in a fucked up society.

    • fatasskisser

you know what CRSTAL??? those boys watching…. they dont have BALLS thats why..they cant stop that fatass stupid girl becuase they are afraid of her..tsk tsk uncivilized..

  • Michael

Reminds me of a scene from the bicycle thief. I don’t think that this a something new or specifically Chinese. Who hasn’t witnessed that kind of mass stupidity as a kid?

  • carl

I love the harmonious society we live in.

Seriously though, she needs to get put in her place.

  • whichone

“Operation Bear Slaughter” that made me laugh out loud.

Chubby girl is fierce, what happened to the jolly nature of fat people?

  • 250

Well at least the was one guy who was kinda trying to stop it. Even if he was pushed out the way like a twig.
Anyway I wonder how ‘operation beat up fat girl’ went.
    Follow up story Fauna?

  • krdr

What is more scarring: 1) The fight, 2) people just looking, not helpng, 3) Human flesh search result 4) organized mob on school girl?

    • Nagexingqisi

The organized mob on the school girl is the best thing that came out of this. The cunt obviously deserves it. Unless you would like such things to happen again.

    • Daphie

I did not click on the video (these stuff always upset me for a long time and in the end I just avoid watching them). BUt I think human flesh search is more scary, it is more scary precisely because a lot people think they are doing the right thing while justice can NOT be replaced by common people.
I have asked some friends and most of them think human search is a good way to punish the evil and help the weak. This scares me, not because I did something wrong, but the search can easily bring unexpected disaster. It should be banned in China as soon as possible-it is NOT the right way to uphold justice.

  • krdr

Can someone explain why “Lost in your love” girl doesn’t defend herself. She just standing, and waits to be hit from the back. I had a feeling that crowd approved Xiongs actions.

  • Canton Pop

“Want to find a bear to beat you? Try the chinaSMACK personals.”

  • Righteous American

So what happened with “Operation Bear Slaughter”?

  • Duchemin

The attacker and the bystanders who did nothing to help the victim should be forced to apologize publicly, not only in the school, but on TV, and the attacker should be expelled from the school and sentenced to hard labor, again televised at times, so that potential aggressors realize what will happen to them if they beat up children or teen-agers (or elderly people, of course).

    • billy joel

Maybe the so called “victim” should apologize for not defending herself.
I’m sorry, she is a victim because she dosnt stand up for herself.

why should we care about fucks who dont’ care about themselves?

if a fuck decides to not work, why the fuck should taxpayer money be flying in his house so he can eat?

      fuck that shit

  • Zorg

    Modus operandi:
    - find out about someone they don’t like
    - gang up
    - meet her after school
    - beet her up

Does this describe Xiong and her cohorts?
    Or maybe righteous netizens?

  • wiseman

Violent girl has muscle…but no brains.

The crowd is of no brains too!

Such actions are of stupid people who don’t deserve to go to school – only hard labor.

    So sad of this society.

  • Zorg

By the way, what is the “five cent party”?

hahaha i lolled at that too.

    • Chen

To chinese or asians, maybe. But to other races, she’s ain’t that tough. Remember that those looking at the fight are minor as well. It is understandable if they dare not get involve in the fight. I consider 17 years old kids as minor.

  • bossman

I like the mob people, everyone should get together and go beat schoolgirls!! ;)

This happens all over the world but onyl in china do people want to go and beat in a big group! Chinese only think together and do dumb things together!!!

God China makes me ashamed. Why dont’ this active group go beat up some corrupt officials.

  • jimmy boyle

    Okay… what’s a human flesh search?

And what’s the 50 cent party?

The girl fight is nothing remarkable – savage beatings were normal at my school. And worse than this video for sure. A guy got stabbed when i was in 3rd year. And I remember scorching someone with a bunsen burner. Perfectly normal where i grew up.

    • Duchemin

“Savage beatings were normal” in your school, jimmy boyle? I can’t believe it. Aren’t teachers and administrators supposed to protect kids against violence? I was a teacher for many years, first in a secondary school, then in a French university, and we would never have tolerated such behavior.
Again, the attacker should spend some time in a hard labor camp, chained, with school kids made to visit the camp, so they understand how violent aggressors are punished. I would advocate less severe action if this were an isolated incident, but apparently, many videos on this site show that it is widespread, and should consequently be dealt with in the most rigorous manner.

      • Daphie

To Duchemin: Did you watch the news? French school teachers are on strike this time for a better reason: safty issue. Although it is a boy get killed by another boy, it freaks all the teachers who think they are not protected in school.
I think the good way to teach kids is not by showing them how severelly they will be punished, but by showing them the MTV program [bully beatdown]. Because they will not realised it is bad thing until they are the victims.

    • Mike Fish

Fauna… make a note… a new milestone has been reached, you have accessed a new group of commenters, homeless crackheads using the internet at the public library.

  • JD

what goes around comes around !!!!!

  • Anna

It looks like the bystanders are all friends of the abusive girl. Maybe that’s why the other girl doesn’t do anything back or walk away?

  • Sister my ass!

she doesn’t deserve ‘sister’ in the inclusion of her name with a face and might like hers, i associate sister with nice gentle girls/women. fugly ho!

  • VeerLeft

This is China… you will be in for a rough ride if you expect people to stand up…even for themselves. The common theme in these videos is that the child being picked on doesn’t fight back either!!!!! Insane… surprised that any of the spineless around here can stand without an exoskeletal brace!

  • 社會是和諧的

These kids are weak as shit. Better send in the “PLA spec ops” to take of this turd dumpling. Or are they too busy getting beat down by Somali pirates right now?

The people who descended on her school to enforce justice remind me a lot of Red Guards.

I anxiously await Billy Joel’s ghey ass retort.

China is still a 3rd world country. if you go to other countries which GDP per capita is around $3,000.00 like China, then you will find plenty of this kind of fights in school. Most of you come from developed countries like USA, France, UK, etc. from the city, hence you do not have this mentality.

  • Henry

This kind of merciless beating where bystanders are not jumping in to help is definitely not unique to China. Just a few years ago in the states there was a video of the seniors in a Chicago area high school soccer team brutally beating the freshmen women while the guys cheered them on. They choked the freshmen with pig intestines, threw feces on them, cracked one girl’s skull, etc. It took a long time before anyone called the police. There have been numerous cases of crowds in the U.S. standing around and not doing anything while people got beat up or killed. So let’s not stereotype this as uniquely Chinese behavior.

    • Duchemin

You’re right, Henry.I remember the incident. But I think the soccer girls have been punished, possibly not the cheering onlookers, though.
      - I am the chairman of a Paris-based anti-hazing group, which has a website, with a section in English, http://www.sos-bizutage.com (“bizutage” is the French word for “hazing”).

  • Chen

I just saw something…..the girl who was beaten, she’s wearing “I”M SO LOST IN YOUR LOVE”. This might explain why she stands up to her abuse.

  • Frogger

That girl in the purple shirt needs to be raped !!!!!!!!!!!

    • James

      Frogger

      NOBODY deserves to be raped

though yeah that was indeed disgusting

and she should somehow be punished

I guess the police would be useful to stop vigalante activity and people from adminstering their own brand of ‘justice’

“That girl in the purple shirt needs to be raped !!!!!!!!!!!”

Dude seriously, theres crossing a line, and then theres climbing into a cannon, and shooting yourself far past it.

      • Duchemin

I agree, James. No one should take the law into their own hands, severe judicial punishment is needed.

    • Chen

Are you nuts? Raping her would only make her dream come true…no one would want a ugly fat as like her, no offense to others thou

      • James

        Chen

The disturbing thing is that for some people others forcing themselves upon them may be a fantasy/dream

but rape is not something ANYONE would look forward to

        • VeerLeft

WHile I tend to agree with you…some actually have the fantasy of being raped. Sorry to correct your naivety.

        • Teacher in China

I agree with VeerLeft. Actually, I dated a girl once who confessed to me that she had a rape fantasy. Lots of different types of people in the world man, some get off on what we would think is totally weird and wrong and amoral.

  • Link

I watched the video clip with horor! Sadness is the society in which people like this girl are brought up.

Cowards were those, specially males, watching the beating infront of their eyes but yet no interventing to stop it happening. How cruel and babaric!

I just could not believe what I have seen!

To the girl who bullied the smaller girl, she should be condemmed and punished to the full force of the law (if there is such in the Lawless China). Ashamed all of those involved.

  • Stimpy

Okay, a lot people seem to think they know why the bystanders do nothing.

But why does the girl in white just stand there? Why doesn’t she try to fight back, or cover her face, or move out of the way when she knows she has a fat truck running towards her back? Why doesn’t she just try and run away?

  • Pingback: Global Voices Online » China: Shanghai schoolgirl beating & human flesh search

  • Canton Pop

There’s something odd about this … why doesn’t the girl fight back? Is this some sort of hazing ritual, or it is completely staged? Or do people just passively take beatings in Chinese culture? Bizzare.

    • 250

I presume it’s because she wanted her clothes to stay on.
I know all those people who are ‘doing a research paper on youth violence’ are sorry to hear that.

    • Canton Pop

From a Chinese perspective, what was her strategy in being totally passive and nonviolent? She had no way of knowing that this would be posted on the Internet or that it would get the kind of attention it did. Takes a tough girl to take a beating like that.

I’d like to hear more from Chinese posters on this, instead of Western a-holes.

      • 250

I can’t give you a Chinese perspective, but i can give you a human one. She’s clearly outnumbered and outgunned. Better to be slapped in the face by a fat girl than kicked in the head by 6 guys.
Chinese girls sure can endure, more power to them.
        Western a-hole out.

Ok, take a beating for a bit, hope that the girl gets lucky and scores a crushing blow early so that you can get knocked out. Probably have some bruises, scrapes, and maybe some internal bruising, but nothing wretched.

Fight back and get to agonizingly experience why one-sided fights don’t bode well unless you’re Bruce Lee.

An actual Chinese, living in China, would probably take what logically would offer the least pain, and pain after the beating, because its obvious that talking this over wasn’t going to happen. Maybe some guys would have the testosterone and adrenaline kick in, and they’d start fighting like madmen, but girls aren’t like that.

        • Duchemin

I agree with you, better not fight back. The only way to stop such beatings is to punish the aggressor and the cheering bystanders severely.

People used to say girls were the more intelligent species and they had the maturity to discuss their problems instead of resorting to violence.

This video proves there are butches out there in Hongkou district who will fight like a shit brick house.

  • Cool Matt

Its easy to say she should have defended herself, but honestly, even if she did take Bic Mac on, what do you think her friends watching and filming would do? Im not saying everybody Chinese does this, but from my experience and stories ive heard, a one on one fight never happens in China.

    • VeerLeft

      1-on-1? …almost never…*sigh*
The travesty is the crowd of apathetic losers who will watch girls beat each other without mercy. I’ve never seen guys just watch women being beaten (by men or women) back home.
Seen lots of girl fights back home, and as soon as it gets too one sided, people will break it up. SO, yeah, it IS an asian thing.

I hope they destroy that disgusting dog she is. Because she’s not even a human to do that.

The other one was not even doing anything, so submisive wouldn’t even protect herself. What can you do when you’re surrounded by more than 20 people. If the poor girl actually tried somthing she could have got beaten even more…..

  • http://hurtthefeelings.blogspot.com/ HM

Why does a swaggering bully think her sadistic attacks make her look good? Why does the crowd laugh and film it, showing no unease or embarrasment? Why do none of the males step in to protect a lone girl being attacked? Why does the victim let this happen? I have never seen anything like it, it beyond my comprehension. I think it is somehow fake.

  • James

Who ever the girl in the purple outfit is indeed a coward

All the other people who did not do anything to stop that, are really poor human beings

Watching that gave me an urge to beat down that lady in purple

    (I dont hit girls)

But I know a lot of ladies who do not have that problem

    shame your not a man

    shame your not a man

  • MC

OMFG!!!! Iam soooo PISSED AND ASSHAMED TO BE CHINESE RIGHT NOW !!!! is this how Chinese people are like today? having no FUCKing morals wat so ever, all of them just watching her get beat up like that. ANnd her BF….. WTF… Beat him up for being such a shit BF, just standing there and watching his GF getting beat up !!!!!!!!! soooo mad !!!!!! AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

    • Duchemin

MC, don’t be ashamed to be Chinese, this can happen anywhere. Things would be different, as I have said repeatedly, if such aggreessors were not punished severely and publicly, so as to deter other potential violent offenders. Don’t you agreee?

      • MC

I dont completly agree with ur idea of a public punishment to fix this problem. I think the fundamental problem here is that these kids are not taught morals in skool and at home, bec of the rapid development happening in China, a lot of ppl are left behind and not looked after especially kids casue their parents are hard at work trying to make a better living, and teachers too need to take responsibility, they need to connect to their students on a personal level and teach them how to be productive people in society and not just the text book stuff!!! There are sooo many thing that you cant learn from text books

        • MC

Oh wait nvm not only do kids need to be taught morals, but also adults, gov officals, police, etc, LOL, I can only hope someday in my life time that this happens, and than i can be pround, and call my self a Chinese!

          • SLX

GTFO!!! so you think its a shame to be called a Chinese right now? Then you shouldn’t be one.

          • Duchemin

I find your answers very interesting, kids and adults need to be taught morals. The problem is still, what do we do to protect kids now?

        • SLX

Taught morales? wtf did they teach you at school?

You really think people could be taught to be better human beings?

ahahhaha….. itz like saying gay people could be made straight if they were taught Sex education sooner in school…. FucK NO, they were born in that disgusting state.

          • http://cnreviews.com Kai

I imagine they taught MC that people can be taught to be better human beings (at least in the eyes of other human beings).

  • specter

Seriously, why don’t spectators ever do anything in these videos? There’s always a crowd of gawks doing nothing, wtf is wrong with Chinese kids. We’d stop the fight once a winner was pretty obvious it became a one-sided beat down.

    • James

      Specter

      You got a point

Its one thing to stay out of someone elses fight

But its another thing to just watch such things and do nothing about it

You can never know just who is scum enough/coward enough

To just not do anything obviously says a lot about you (spectators) as a human being

    “Why don’t people help.”

Two issues here. The first is a parenting issue. Chinese parents tell their kids: “don’t get into trouble; don’t get into fights; if someone hits you, don’t hit back it’ll just make it worse.” The central message is: “don’t get hurt.” With that sort of mentality, intervening in fights is clearly not a good idea as it represents a physical risk, which Chinese parents try to school out of their children.

The second is a social issue. In China, everything is personal. It’s all about friends and relations, and if you get involved in someone else’s shit, there’s the very real chance that it’ll come back and bite you in the ass. Expats, especially those who are only in the country for business, do not have a real appreciation of this as it’s hard to imagine having to live with these people day in and day out. Take that girl and her “gang” of friends, for instance – if you’re a student in that school and you get on her bad side, what do you think’s going to happen? Chinese people make these sorts of calculations and on the surface it seems logical – yet, ultimately, it results in a society where the strong abuses their power and the weak get stepped on.

Thanks for your interest comment, Yin. Still, I keep asking the same question: what do schools and the juducial system do to punish these aggressors and deter other potential bullies? Luckily, you don’t have corporal punishment (unlike Singapore, e.g.), so that this girl will not be flogged, but I hear that you have strict disciplinary institutions where she, and other violent aggressors, could learn the hard way to respect weaker people.
As a former teacher, I think that protecting young girls and boys against violence should be a top priority.
