Laboratory Dogs Used For Experiments At Medical Schools

From Kaixin001:

They are experimental/test dogs for the medical school. They need to go under the knife 4 times, suffering 4 surgeries, with the last surgery excising their pancreas, ending their lives.

1. It just stood there by its kennel door looking at me. The surrounding dogs were all noisily barking, but it remained very quiet. Tomorrow, he will be taken for his first experiment/test surgery.

2. Every dog’s living space is only this small. The dogs in this area haven’t yet gone under the knife.

3. Their food is usually the cabbage congee sold by the lady at the front gate, but some students will spend 5 kuai [at the students' cafeteria] and save the meat to give to them later.

4. He is very fierce, but very beautiful, and his eyes are very big and shine blue.

5. The half open kennel looks just like a coffin.

6. This mommy dog had given birth to her puppies several days before the scheduled surgery, so she was not used as an test dog, but who knows if their future will be so lucky.

7. This dog is pregnant, but it was still taken for the first experiment to be performed — its belly cut open and then stitched up.

8. He is in a bad shape.

9. It was carried back after following an experiment. With the anesthesia having worn off, it keeps twitching/convulsing, its eyes half open but unconscious…its twitching/convulsing too terrible…..

10. My friend’s team/group’s dog. This was the second day after its experiment, and he can already stand up, but faltering. When it saw my friend, he suddenly rushed over, and I thought it was because it was angry, but I didn’t expect it to start wagging it’s tail… Dogs never resent you for what you have done to them, I feel so heartbroken.

11. The second day after surgery, this dog passed away, it finally unable to stay alive. This was only its first surgery, and the least harmful surgery too. There are 3 more surgeries waiting for them, and each one is more cruel than the previous one…

12. Every kennel looks like tombs.

13. Just like this they are taken away for surgery after being anesthetized, and this is one that has returned after surgery. Please don’t curse the students, for they are even more sad, because each group must raise their own dog, so their relationship with their dog is even stronger/deeper.

—Postscript:

This was posted by a netizen on Douban, and to use what this netizen’s words: Please don’t over react to this, don’t human flesh search them. I just want people to know that there are such dogs who dedicate their lives for us without being known. Please respect the will of this person, and everyone please don’t human flesh search them, but you are welcome to repost this, so that even more people know that as our health technology increases, there are some dogs doomed to never get humanity’s love and attention, and yet they have silently dedicated their lives for humanity.

I wonder what those unguarded dogs felt as they watched the people they loved sticking needles into their bodies.

When I was reposting this post, I was crying as I posted their photos.

Because I have two dogs myself, my feelings towards [this matter involving] dogs are deeper.

We need to thank and remember them, because their lives can be exchanged for the lives of our loved ones and even our own. Only by letting intern doctors practice and experiment countless times on their bodies can we, our relatives, our friends have the possibility one day of surviving and living on.

However, no one will remember them. Because their lives are too insignificant, even insignificant to the point where they are not even worth a pack of cigarettes.

I hope, can only hope, that when they are alive, they can get more to eat, with a little more meat. When they are sleeping in their little kennels, [I hope] that we can provide them with some unwanted clothes or old bed sheets as bedding, so they can feel a bit warmer on cold nights.

At least, don’t let them suffer too much while they are alive.

仲丽莉(Li):

Since you’re willing to do it, don’t be afraid of my cursing you. I won’t human flesh search, I just curse them, I am just that extreme. What’s done is done, regardless of the reasons, the doggies still died, painfully died. If you want to do experiments in the future, use your little sister, OK??

何果轩Toreador:

This is the humanity of our Heavenly Kingdom [nickname for China]~~

周子然:

The dogs’ sacrifice is for humans, so let’s at least treat them better when they are still alive…

I’m crying….

何蓓蒂 (Beidi):

Where is this place? Those concerned [should] sneak in at night and free all the dogs, then set fire to this Unit 731-like place!!!!

张雪琦:

This again, I have already cried one time today, I even showed it to my coworker, she cried hard too……

任婕:

Only after seeing this post did I learn that it was from our group. Truly can’t know without seeing, the poor doggies. Seeing this my heart is so pained. This so-called humanitarianism is is too inhumane. Is there really not a single decent law to protect these weak and little lives? This is so……… Please let us all think of a way to do something about this.

黄亦泷:

Just after you cut him open, he wagged his tail at you. With such loyal animals, how can you not feel it is cruel? Which stupid cunt was it that thought of using dogs for experiments? Use his entire family for experiments!!!

张超:

Why use animals for experiments? They are life too. I suggest using prisoners sentenced to death for experiments, so they can give society one last contribution.

赵妤:

My heart is so pained after reading this. Even after being cut open, they were still so unreserved, so friendly when seeing people. My God, who can give me a single reason for not loving and caring for them?

李安妮:

Regarding what the 8th floor [8th commenter] said, those sentenced to death may include those who were wrongly accused, [but] using the scum of the society, corrupt officials, and those arrogant rich 2nd-generation for experiment I think is acceptable!

谢妍:

Can we organize something, to prevent animal torment and killing?

Looking at this is too heartbreaking…

come on, as if experimenting on dogs is really that bad. do Chinese netizens ever stop to think that without proper training and experience whilst in Medical school, the doctors and surgeons of tomorrow would remain inexperienced, and might even cause all sorts of accidents while operating with real, live people. It’s all for a better tomorrow.

although I am confused as to why dogs were chosen for experiments at a medical school – they have completely different anatomies to humans. In Australia the Medicine and Physiotherapy students use deceased human corpses for dissections (I am a Pharmacy student, so I won’t have to), and they are generally the bodies of elderly people. They can’t have the internal structures damaged too much, so most are from natural causes of death.

I also was surprised that there were no “Koreans + Dogs = ???” jokes, given that after all these are Chinese netizens… or maybe it was because it wasn’t on Mop or Tianya…

    • Keius

I have to agree with you. Nothing really shocking about this. This is China after all. It’s not like other countries haven’t done the same at one point or another. Would people have issues if they were using pigs for experimentation? I know someone who works at Johns Hopkins University doing research. She raises these cute white mice and then injects them with genetic altering compounds every day. Consequently gases 1 or more to death every single day. She loathes it but it’s research and it’s stuff that may one day translate into good things for humans. Who knows.

Still, it seems really stupid to be using dogs and not human corpses. But there are always reasons they may not be able to obtain human corpses. Using dogs may just be a last resort and they are cutting into live specimens.

      • InstantNoodles

Maybe the operation needs live specimens? My co-worker used to work on research using mice, and vivisection was mandatory for the type of disease they were researching.

Yo ip seyo! We do not operate this way on dogs in North Korea!!!! We save the expensive stretchers for people of the ruling party. By the way – can’t the Chinese people at least wear some lab coats or something to make it APPEAR as though it is somewhat scientific and sanitary? What’s with the gap knock-off shirts? But, seriously, the places where those dogs live look a little nicer than some of the apartment buildings still standing in Beijing… WELCOME TO COME TO NORTH KOREA where dogs are treated as nice as humans – we perform scientific testing operations on BOTH!

      • anne

umm…aside from dead bodies, practicing on live animals is also done in med schools(not just in China) Operating on dogs is pretty standard, most med schools are smart and don’t take/allow taking pictures otherwise peta or other animal rights activists will be at the door and strip our access to working with live animals, which is rather inconvenient. Sorry to break it to you.

  • Woopma

So how do you people expect doctors to learn how to perform surgery then? Would it be better that they have no practice and then make a mistake on someone in your family when they get appendix problems?

Trade one dog for 400 peoples’ lives? Who is that illogical to choose one dog over 400 people?

  • M7

Animal testing are a common practice in my pharma r and d.

Even with EU safety procedure, we are order to humanly killed our tested subject even after a success test as a mean to control any possible contamination and mutation. Even back in year 1 of university, I remember a lab of 200 + students each kill about 50 bugs in a genetic experiment just for the sake of learning.

Biology is not for the faint hearted. Especially if you are going medicine.

    • adam

yea but do you test on dogs? we did stuff with flies i mean i wasted like 200 of them alone. then we dissected a baby pig straight out the womb. however doing the same on a dog is a bit different. especially a living dog.

I triple posted because most websites of interest are banned in China

Because of National Socialism’s sentimental attitude towards animals, their medical research suffered severely and unlike the Western Allies they were unable to mass produce antibiotics for the duration of the war. This dramatically decreased the number of Wehrmacht casualties who returned to full combat duties, Hitler’s limp wristed vegetarian faggotry may have been the difference between defeat and victory.

  • http://www.lovelovechina.com Crystal

I agree that these dogs should be given better conditions, but generally speaking future doctors need something to train on (before operating people). It can be dogs, pigs, monkeys… but in the end it must be something.
Using human corpses would give only a limited experience: what about anaesthesia? monitoring the vital signs during operation? dealing with blood coming out of the wound when the surgical cut is done?
In medieval ages church in Europe prohibited even dissecting the human corpses for scientific purposes, and these were the black ages of Europe.
Cruel? Maybe. But currently there is no choice. Maybe in the future producing artificial dolls for surgical operations would become a feasible alternative, but not now!

    • Beni

Read my comments below… can all be done humanely and achieve ur desired learning outcomes. Do not have to wait to see the dog survive or not. If the procedures are done right, there are too many factors that would affect the survival of the animal post surgery ie: NUTRITION PRIOR AND AFTER SURGERY, ENVIRONMENT – u dont dump an operated patient outside the hospital!
CRUEL? NO CHOICE? there is always a choice! You just need to spend a little more effort, heart and probably a little more money.
DONT EVEN START ON CLONED PEOPLE FOR SURGERY….
Seriously, argument such as using dogs for the benefit of people, then why cant we use those disabled people, beggars, prisoners or your dying relative as experiments then? They are in a way “useless”. I mean it is all for the benefit of the other healthy and more “superior” people? Also, it would save the government money on welfare? Hell might as well just experiment on anyone not paying tax… i think that would be better. BTW, a dog’s anatomy is different from human.
Also, if such practise on animals is actually useful, how come western medical school never even bothered using animals for training? Think about it.

      • Keius

“Also, if such practice on animals is actually useful, how come western medical school never even bothered using animals for training? Think about it.”

US medical schools are more advanced than Chinese ones, believe it or not. And, this is China we’re talking about. Getting human corpses are a lot easier in the US believe it or not. In the US, we have people with drivers licenses designating themselves as organ donors. Can you really imagine Chinese people donating their organs for other people who are not family(unless it’s for huge moolah)??? Now, can you imagine Chinese people donating their corpses?? Their families would NEVER allow it even if they designated themselves as donors. Think about the culture and you’ll understand.

Anyway, standards are different. Human rights standards in China are different than Western views. Animal rights? in China? Look at how cheap human life is there…

        • Beni

I dont understand your view. Shouldnt we follow the more advance school? How many unclaimed corpse are there in the morgue in China? I am sure must be quite a number so why cant we use them?
The other thing is that while many Chinese citizen wish to have democracy and greater rights and yet they wont respect the wishes of their loved ones who want to donate their own body/organ? That is ironic.
I dont understand about the difference in standards. Are you saying that Human rights standard is lower in Western country or higher? You mentioned human life is cheap in China? Then why not use their corpse? I am confused.
Despite of all these, standards, cultures etc. What we must understand is that if you see something is wrong, you need to try to improve and correct it otherwise China will never advance.
“Evil wins when good men dont act!”

          • Keius

Human Rights standards are better in Western countries. Life is cheaper in China BUT there is a cultural bias relating to Buddism and the desecration of ancestors/family members/corpses. In the old days, cremation really wasn’t an option but it’s more accepted now. Having doctors cut up a family members corpse to “play” with it is a very repulsive idea to the vast majority of Chinese. This beats out the need of medical schools for corpses in the eyes of Chinese people.

Something else to digest is that there is a major element of ancestor worship to Buddism. Look up grave visiting day to understand how important it is to most Chinese.

    • Shanghailander

how about using some of the 1.3 billions(!!) chinese instead of innocent dogs…you have plenty of choices..wait a minute, I read somewhere that has been already happening for the past 10 years

      • Chunghwa

        0/10

        Troll harder.

  • Beni

Damn man, i can understand the logic behind it but i cant understand the cruelty behind it. To let your own students kill and subject them to these torturous procedure for 4x is just wrong. I dont think they will be a very benevolent doctors after that, they will just be heartless. If you could do that to a living thing you raised with love and care, what about the guy on the street that you dont even know… good luck to him.

From the photo i could also see alot of poorly looked after dogs. Guess some of the group just dont give a fuck anyway. Why cant they just use stray dogs that will be euthanised? And why cant they just do all 4 procedures at one go? For example the 1st year do the easy one, then the 2nd year go in to do the harder one and so on all at one setting? At least once all the procedures are over, they can euthanise the dog whilst sedated. Come to think of it, i think they would just slit the dog throat whilst asleep to save money. But still more humane than going thru 4 fking surgeries before dying in their master’s hands. Anyway, i hope they all go to hell, students alike cause they could just stop this by protesting together.

    • http://www.psycheegotyou.com C

You have to look at this from the student’s prospective. Many of them are working hard at this school in hopes of becoming a future doctor. I believe that they genuinely feel bad about what they are doing and at the same time cannot do anything about it, because they need to succeed. So I agree with you that they will end up becoming de-sensitized and in a way, heartless.

As for your other questions…however rhetorical…
      - Stray dogs in China aren’t euthanised. They are left alone or beaten to death if people need to get rid of them.
      - 4 procedures in one go? These are starting medical students we are talking about. Getting through one procedure is hard enough. Not to mention, all together the surgeries might take hours.

      • Beni

Not the same students doing 4 procedures to a dog. More like the 1st year student does the basic, then the second year does the second one, etc. So you can do 4 in one sitting. Get it? BTW. In western country, starting medical student do not suture anyone at all. Only 5th year and 6th year sometime get the chance to suture wounds on REAL ALIVE people under supervision.

It’s not like other countries don’t test on animals. I know in the US they test on MONKEYS except they don’t let them roam around because they are usually in a small cage.

Chinese forget about Unit 731′s treatment pretty quick, eh?

The least they could do is perform the surgeries properly and properly care for the dogs in between surgeries so that there isn’t suffering.

Animal testing isn’t wrong, but doing it in a manner where every day is just suffering for the animals is.

    • Bob

Nod nod i agree with you on this one. THey could have done it in a humane way but they chose to the other option always using culture as excuse, or “better than doing it on human/corpse” etc. Tried to keep telling them in western world, they dont even get to suture patient for real until final year or during internship. Dunno why they so stubborn.

  • Alex

This kind of hypocrisy starts to annoy me. It’s perfectly ok to experiment on rats and frogs, but if a bigger animal is involved (like dogs or cats) everybody starts freaking out.

So basically it’s ok to experiment on the pets if they’re small and ugly, but if something bigger and cuter goes through the same thing, suddenly the scientists are some cruel bastards.

  • M. Bigelow

As long as the animals were treated in a humane way, i don’t see the problem. They should be made as comfortable as possible.

In Canada, my Grandfather used dogs for many of his experiments in the 40′s and 50′s which led to his discovery and invention of the artificial cardiac pacemaker. The sacrifice animals make for improvements in medicine are not forgotton.

Without them, we wouldn’t have many of the medical advacements we have today.

  • M. Bigelow

As long as the animals were treated in a humane way, i don’t see the problem.

In Canada, my Grandfather used dogs for his experiments on the heart in the 40′s and 50′s, which evidently led to his invention of the artificial cardiac pacemaker. Without animals, what would we do? Experiment on humans like the Nazi’s?

So dogs are cuter than Nigerian kids, yes? And this animal friendly practice helps reduce swelling human population. Maybe we should do as one commenter suggested, and do tests on criminals and tax evaders. Or we can skip testing altogether. I heard bleeding a guy out is a cure for many ills.

Your ability to write should be “band like all normal countries”.

      Go get educated first, please.

  • Mad Scientist

Don’t worry guys it was done for SCIENCE! so its okay.

It is our destiny as humans to unlock the secrets of the universe, there is no such thing as bad science. If an experiment were to endanger the entire planet like the LHC project, then do it WE MUST! For SCIENCE AND FOR HUMANITY

  • JY

This facility should be reduced to ash by artillery barrages and airstrikes!

  • Jennifer

This is why I hate humans. They’re just sick creatures who only care about themselves and their benefits.

  • Christine Kolono

What kind of experiments will fix the mental illness and evil in this world? You took care of your dog and he loved you and this is what you did and you still tried to justify it. I’m sorry for the way you are. I would not want to be alive if that’s how I was.

  • christine Kolano

These are sick cruel mentally ill people. Maybe the life expectancy of a human is long enough and we don’t need any experimentation on animals. We need to cut open the brains of the medical students and find out what makes them think like they do. They have a pet dog that loves them and they cut open it’s stomach and let it die even after it wagged it’s tail. Then they try to justify the evil! Cold, evil, sickening.

  • vanna

This is so evil, so cruel, I dont understand what type of people can hurt an animal, they must be demons reecarnated from hell here in planet earth, and to hell they are going back when die. This planet is crazy and very sick. China has so many evil heartless people. There is no laws to protect animals. So they are very cruel to all animals. Is a non spiritual country.

  • Desmond

They are not dedicating their lives–they are prisoners. If they were ‘dedicating their lives’ they would not need to be chained. We should not just remember them, we should free them. There is no excuse for torturing the innocent. None.

  • lee-sa

i hate people who harm dogs in any way…those dogs wer fkcing uber skinny from starvation~~can i starve and expiriment on their family? im remind myself of lucy from the anime ”Elfen lied” she will cut off human ligements and dosent care but she will never harm animal even if it bites her

  • http://www.facebook.com/GermanShepherdDog Christina

I feel sorry for the dogs but animal abuse and testing would probably never be stopped. I love dogs and China.

  • Jam

What should i say. I have heard about so many experiments done on so many living things, even humans. I think it is far too much for a dog to have as many as 4. Why not one and let it live? I know we can not stop this because research has to take place. But please at least one is enough for each dog and let it live.

  • B

This is just plain stupid. I cried while reading midway.. Looking at the dog’s expression, I knew what and how it felt as I am a dog lover myself.. They have no hearts.. Saying they love them and have a bond with the dogs is totally fake. What kinda a morons would cut open and sew back the dog that they love? There is no humanity. I really hope this world will end soon. People are worse than animals. And the eearth should be rid of it. I am willing to die when the world ends. No use staying in such a horrible place with people like these making it worse.

Schools, universities, hospitals ALL do the same thing to dogs here in the United States all the time and it’s legal.

  • Maiken

Those dog experiments are scientifically useless and therefore simply cruelty to them.

  • Maiken

I curse your stupidity, even to believe, that those ” experiments” have any value to humanity and I curse your wilful obedience, inflicting atrocities on those who trust you for the sake of getting “good marks” by those who order it.

No brains, no guts, little hearts.

  • Vladislav

You fuckers! May you and those you care about rot in the depths of hell forever!

  • Debra

There is absolutely no compassion here. Not so much as a blanket for them to lie on. Barely enough nutrition to sustain them. Living on hard cement. If that isnt ucomfortable enough, imagine having FOUR surgeries and having to lie on cement. Very likely with no pain killing medication. Shameful and horiffic. To those students who do what they can to lessen thier suffering (buying meat, etc), thank you. Please show them as much kindness as you can, to help them through their terrible journey. They need you.

  • Meh

Of course they need the experimental food tested somehow.

  • Chunghwa

Quote from that article: “And the owner of the Yanjie Xicheng Dog Meat Restaurant in Yanji, Jilin Province, surnamed Piao, told the Global Times that the proposed rule may not have a big impact on people of Han descent, but it would definitely be bad news for Korean minorities because eating dogs is part of their dining culture.”

It looks like Xinhua just trolled 73 million people.

  • Alikese

That’s too bad, I kind of liked going out to eat dog in the winter. So long as the dog is raised and killed humanely, there shouldn’t be anything wrong with it. A dog isn’t any cuter than a rabbit or sheep and no one has a problem eating them.

I never tried cat, but I would if given the chance. That would show those mangy bastards that howl outside my window at night. I would shout tell your friends! while throwing meaty bones on the ground to their feral family members and laughing maniacally.

  • Rick in China

They just re-use the stretchers reserved for the coal-mine kids next door.

  • korean_guy

Chinese have no one to compete with when it comes to food.

“…be bad news for Korean minorities because eating dogs is part of their dining culture.”

this is the funnies shit I read all year long. The whole world knows Chinese eat some nasty ass shit they call food. No other cultures’ food will ever be too nasty for a Chinese, cuz there ain’t nothing the Chinese haven’t eaten.

  • korean_guy

    how bout “Cat-Wok” stew??

  • Supreme_Leader

Koreans are Chinese – so the logic here makes no sense. FAIL!

  • To korean_guy

Haha.. Love it when Koreans troll on Chinese. Considering how pathetic their small useless country is.

  • Zeus
