The post-90s generation will eventually become society’s pillar, builders of the country. They are lively and energetic, have vigorous thinking, are pioneering, have active creative mentalities and will eventually lead the people towards advancement. You can criticize and belittle but you cannot change that the future world will be their’s.

Boys and girls, they will become our society’s fathers and mothers. No matter what, they will become the parents of children. Don’t think of yourself as a saint. The middle school and high school students these days are all post-90s generation. You see a few post-90s with rebellious personalities and society is doomed, that China is going to be destroyed? You are blind and worrying too much, and no one will notice/pay attention to you guys.

    i remember back in the late 90s when i was back in high school girls would do this, self cutting themselves. actually i dated a girl who would do this, i couldnt figure out why. she told me it made her release anger and pressures because of her parents divorce, like the pain was coming out of her body by doing this. i could never figure it out. personally i dont agree with it. when i have anger issues i jsut would hit the weights and for an added bonus would go to the firing range and shoot of a few rounds with my shotgun. and whackin off to some fine porn also helps.

        I’ve been saying that the Chinese should embrace Christianity for years. There are strong prohibitions in the Old Testament against defiling the flesh, even today if you scar yourself on purpose (this includes tattoos) you can’t get buried in a Jewish cemetery. This shit needs to stop, these future skanks will start by cutting themselves, then when they turn 17 they’ll get one of those shitty wing things above their ass like some second rate porn star, men don’t find tattoos attractive so they’ll be forced to act like unpaid hookers in order to get laid and Chinese morals will decay even further. Chinese parents need to learn that they can raise their girls to be good Christians or they’ll end up inked out and sucking Nigerian cock on the urine soaked floor of a sleazy nightclub for a point of meth.

          I called for religious worship, not religious freedom. Europe may be the home of modern Christianity but it’s not longer Christian in any meaningful sense, politically Western Europe has been anti-Christian since about World War One.

            The Republic of Korea is far from perfect but compared to China we’re much more socially and politically advanced. In part I thank Christianity and Buddhism for this, I recommend Protestant Christianity (specifically Calvinism) not only because I’m a Christian but because it would be very difficult for the Chinese to re-discover a genuine Buddhist faith after the devastation of the Cultural Revolution. Maybe you think it’s tragic but the Chinese aren’t any more likely to worry about their next reincarnation than Europeans are likely to blame Freyr when they can’t get it up.

            I also know that this behaviour is also quite common in South Korea. Even among Christians. Do not forget my wife is from Seoul. And by the way, I am not a big Fan of the churches in South Korea. Many of them are too radical. No wonder, most of them have their roots in the bible belt, US.

            When young people are drinking into oblivion, taking drugs, joining gangs or getting else involved in brawls and fights, all that is not so far away from those acts of self-inflicted damage. They are just looking for extreme experiences, testing their limits. This will sometimes go over the top, and – as life in general – is not without risk.

            When I was young, we got frequently involved in brawls and street fights, and yes, because we were looking for trouble, excitement, adventure. And we were not stupid enough not to know that there was always a chance to get beaten up badly. Even if “victorious” you seldom came out unharmed, much more that would not add fame as it would denote that you picked defenseless foes.

            Of course, this is another opportunity for Western lao wai to throw in their all time favorite obsession/complaint, about that horrible cultural revolution (occuring at about the same time McCarthyism was, in the states). So, some one here posts about poor China, if only they could have Christianity rather than the cultural revolution of bad old Mao, and so forth. But, in response, that piece of embarrasing behavior served a purpose: it kept Western supersition (religion) out, didn’t it? To advocate religion now for China, on the other hand, would be like waving it in with lighted sticks like those guys who work at the airport…

    Is there no compassion for the natural desire for self-expression that is enjoyed by young women and men everywhere, but denied to these Chinese slaves of the MOE. A very confused mix of arrogant governmental control and sickeningly romanticized “5000 years of Chinese tradition” prevent these school kids from just being the individuals that God made them.       It’s one thing to have self-expression, but for kids that should stop way way before there is blood or scarring. What I find sickeningly romanticized is the notion that all actions are forms of expression or the mark of individuality and are somehow sacrosanct. This is idiotic. Just because people should have the freedom to choose how to express themselves doesn’t mean everyone else should agree with their choice. I doubt you will think it’s so commendable if it is your kid walking around with a box cutter ready to “express herself”.

        My son attended Ren Da Fu Zhong. He absolutely hated the uniforms and the morning exercises. He acted out. He’s now known as the guy who taught English by writing in the snow on the football pitch. At that time he also chose to pierce his ears and put gauges in. Kids. What can you do? He’s my son and I love him. He’s been in America for a year now. I miss him every day.

I’ve seen many hateful words in many places, especially Palin, Bush, Limbaugh and their ilk talking about homosexuals, blacks, immigrants, first, fourth, and ninth amendments and pretty much everyone who disagree with them.

          Unless he acted out by cutting himself, your sons behavior are immaterial to this conversation. No one is saying kids should not express themselves, but certainly there ought to be bounds. You can see the difference between ear piercing and wrist cutting yes?

Who has the right to criticize others? These girls still have their stupid uniforms on. They’re still in school. It’s clear that they are still functioning in Chinese society. What’s the big deal?

Your failure to appreciate the difference between a cosmetic practice and self-injury is truly astonishing (but unrelated to your lack of training in anthropology). I wrote that last sentence as rhetorical question and did not expect you to reply with a negative. Cutting itself is indicative that these girls do not have a more functional way of dealing with their emotional problems and not “clearly still functioning in Chinese society”. The big deal is cutting is a form of self-harm listed in Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders, though most people would instinctively recognize it’s harmful and unacceptable from common sense alone. Until recently, it has been diagnosed as Borderline Personality Disorder, nowadays there are many more nuanced classifications, but all of them equally serious. ( Source )

            A separate issue you’ve brought up here is “who has the right to criticize others?” There is a difference between telling people off and holding a critical opinion. I think you have confused the two. If that is not the case and you have trouble making any sort of value judgment at all, then that seems to invalidate the entire reason why you were commenting in the first place.

        When you make seemingly slanderous remarks about good people, like Palin, Limbaugh, and Bush, it is your legal responsibility to support what you say.

    It’s funny how we are criticizing and bashing the post90′s generations, the previous gen. is always bashing the new gen.

    Don’t be stupid, this isn’t caused by lack of religion.
    Christianity is just stupid, there are many religions; if China had to adapt one it will of course be it’s own.
    When it comes to morale, even the ‘three character classic’ is better then those twisted teachings in the Bible. We don’t need freedom OF religion, but we need freedom FROM religion.

    The Chinese doesn’t have one and only ‘religion’ it is a mix of different ‘thought systems/cultural practices’ influencing each other, the use of the word religion is debatable, some examples: Chinese Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Chinese traditional religion, the ying yang, ancestor veneration, Wu Xing, heaven worship, feng sui, filial piety, De, family orientation, fortune telling etc etc…

      From the reports that I’ve read, the most recent being about 6 months ago, China’s Christian population has grown over to 140 million. It’s now almost double the size of the Party. Looks like they’re choosing.
      I’ve read, studied, taught, and taken inspiration from the Bible since I was a child. It’s a beautifully honest book and has never been archeologically disproved, in spite of centuries of vicious attacks. It’s message is quite simple – God made the earth and the people in it, so it’s in his power to do whatever he wants with it all. The book says that he has chosen to love people, but most people reject him and his love. So, like the fleas, mosquitoes, and cockroaches that we don’t have the right to kill, but do, he occasionally exterminates. But he’s looking for honest people who will recognize the reality of their situations and choose to love him. Those people experience his blessings. Seams fair to me.

          I believe the reports and expect that the number has grown. Henan, the most populous province has many, many Christians, as does Anhui. Guandong is heavily influence by the highly active church in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. It’s easy to believe that people would get sick of being force-fed atheism by a bunch of selfishly violent leaders. Beautiful things grow when the manure is thick.

            there is huge difference many of “Christians” in China than what we typically believe in as Christians here. My cousin for example would a cross, goes to church, but still goes to temple on festival days, and burn paper at Qingming. Sometimes she wears the cross and a Buddha Talisman at same time, and I’m only one who think it is funny. btw, a lot people just religion for personal gain, in fact it is encouraged in class!

        The population of Christians in China is around 15 million officially. From independent polls a conservative estimate would put the figure at around 40million. 10million would be the high estimate. 140 million is an exaggeration.

        The bible is a man made attempt at defining morality. A lot of it are just common sense and are still valid today. Parts of the bible are clearly outdated. If everyone followed the bible literally most of us would be stoned (as in executed). For example: Leviticus 20:9 For anyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.

        The problem with bible thumpers is that for the most part they are self-victimizing hypocrites. For example they would continue to defend the likes of Rush Limbaugh, whereas had he followed the bible he should of been stoned many times over.

Every time you hear a Catholic priests who molests yet another church goer, a Born Again Christan minister who bought yet another Roll Royce while preaching modesty, a “model family value christian” who goes on to cheat on the partner, etc., the credibility of Christianity diminishes.

      I don’t know about Buddhism not being supported compare to Daoism. The main Buddhist temple give for more government support compare the Taoist temple just 15 minute walk to it. (they share the same mountain) This is the despite the fact that the Taoist temple is older and carry names of all the soldiers died defending the city during WWII on their stone tablets. (but then, these soldiers fight on the Nationalist side)

    I tired of hearing people blaming the post 90′s generation. The past generations mainly from poor families are the same sh1t, it happens that they had less freedom to express themselves in the most weird ways like we see in first world countries that are way too liberal sometimes.

    Suppression of behavior doesn’t give anyone wisdom. If you block someone from doing something but not giving them proper knowledge and explanations to make them realize by themselves why they shouldn’t do it they’ll do it anyway sooner or later. Although to say a simple “no” it’s better than nothing and it can prevent a lot of bad things.

    All I see is that China is getting more westernized and more liberal so as Korea, almost all their songs have english words and sometimes you see they’re trying so hard to be like Americans which is kinda sad. Honestly I rather date a typical simple Korean/Chinese than a westernized skanky one full of American sh1t in her head.

Remember my mama got very angry every time if papa was trying to tell me the bad side of the society and warn me about the evils. So when I really start to see the world I get shocked.

    This is just sad … ppl are over-analyzing the political and religious relevance of this while hardly anyone is compassionate enough to bring up a discussion of these girls’ poor psychological well-being.     Regarding stereotypes, most stereotypes often exist because not all but a vast majority of people share a behavior.
