heron55555:

Training is good, but definitely don’t hurt your health!

jiao25239394:

If they train more normally, there will be less injuries during war! Support!

中华一儿郎:

This is how the determination/will-power of iron-blooded soldiers is developed!!!

光明乌瑟尔:

Good soldiers are produced by training. Seeing this much snow, I as a southerner am already shivering! Impressive!

qiqiyzy123:

They didn’t even ask doctors if this is actually good/meaningful! I bet when they become older, they will be afflicted by after-effects! This official, acting recklessly! Not considering the soldiers’ health! Should be criticized heavily!!!

流氓雁:

SB…what the hell are these people doing??? Will training soldiers in the future require them to be naked, to save on military spending?

The human body has limits. Do they really think they can train people into steel/iron?

中国空军元帅:

How come there are always some people who cannot accept our Liberation Army’s power/strength, always saying foreigners are great regardless of what they do, yet when we do it no one says a good word.

zler:

Being buried in snow is actually warmer than standing naked in snow, refer to the polar bear and Eskimos.

乔公子:

Actually, the backbone of the miltiary are these basic/low level troops, on these simple and stupid common soldiers…

These days, I always feel the military is divided into two worlds, one is the high life-living fat headquarters and high commanders. The other is the harsh lives and archaic training of the low-level soldiers.

At the same time, the military cannot be divorced from the overall society, and whatever society is like, the military is like as well.

The training for low-level soldiers is pretty harsh, and it would be better if it were more scientific, but I’m afraid they only know to train the body [not the mind].

I cannot verify this but I have heard that last year in Fujian, a member of a special military unit became the first martyr/victim of severe avian flu. Allegedly, the military ordered that nothing must be spared to keep him…I bet everyone can imagine how he was able to contract avian flu, training in the wilderness, he probably had to eat raw meat of wild animals.

Brave, adorable soldiers…

阿尔法小组:

You guys have it so rough!

The most adorable people! They must train, Chinese people’s cold-resistance is not as strong as the Russians (this is fact)!

…so they must train!

For the country’s security, northern troops must endure more of this kind of hardship!!!

I salute you guys!

绝影紫蓝:

Is this going too far? I am a little hesitant, and feel there is no need for this.

西北旺:

I feel harsh training in the military is very necessary, but we must follow a principle, which is to not train recklessly. These days, the situation is much better, we should follow scientific methods, and not let them lose their youth and their lives on the training grounds.

zhezhe117:

After seeing this I feel like murdering someone. I’m very upset. This is definitely making a joke with soldiers’ bodies. There are many methods of training cold resistance, there is no need to be this extreme.  I curse the leader/official who suggested this idea.

Not afraid of cold? chinaSMACK personals.

  1. Hmmm… I rather just spend the 100 bucks on some UnderArmour Coldgear.

  2. It ain’t cold enough until you get frost bites…

  3. Playing leap-frog in the snow. Excellent, this is how I trained when I was in kindergarten.

  4. Typical commie propaganda, this isn’t real training, this is just a show they’re putting on to make their army look like superhumans. The North Koreans do this all the time

    • “Typical commie propaganda” It is funny because this soldier and snow thing is something I used to see many times on south korean television.

      http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42433000/jpg/_42433619_soldiers_getty416b.jpg

      • Whatever, I never did that shit when I did my six weeks of basic before joining KATUSA

The US Army would never have done that to us because someone might have sued or complained that the fat soldiers had an unfair amount of insulation

        • 6 weeks is pretty short for basic, I guessing your MOS isn’t 11Bravo.

The Seals have a similar training regimen where they have to stay in the icy water for hours. Which makes sense, since cold water dividing is within their area of operations.

          • He stated that he was in KATUSA, which are ROK soldiers attached to the US military to augment US unit manpower of those stationed in the ROK. So, in essence, he’s talking about the ROK Army. ROKA has a much more abbreviated version (about 4 or 5 weeks now) of basic than the US military.

The US military has 9 weeks of Basic Combat Training (BCT), followed by Advanced Individual Training (AIT), which takes anywhere from several weeks up to a year depending on your job specialty. I was 95 Bravo when I served, 8 weeks (then) of BCT with 9 weeks AIT.

As for this burrowing in snow thing, one of the Chinese respondents hit the nail on the head. It’s actually taught as a cold weather survival skill to bury one’s self under snow as protection from wind chill. This effectively creates an insulated cocoon that not only preserves heat, but also allows for melted snow to provide a clean source of water too.

While not the most comfortable situation, the snow itself isn’t all that bad. To the uninformed, I guess it would look macho as hell.

          • It’s also a common mountain climbing tactic when climbing snow if there’s a blizzard or storm coming and you’ve not got time or place to set up a tent, to burrow a hole in the snow and try to push the opening of the burrow as small as possible to trap heat inside and protect from harsh incoming weather. Body warmth will quickly ‘ice up’ the walls of your burrow and the little hole will be surprisingly warm. People live in fuckin igloos 365 days a year, these guys aren’t “superhuman”, they’re learning tactics for survival. Ralphrepo is right.

        • Not true and you know it. How hard is it for you to be truthful just once in your life? All I ever see are childish lies from your postings. The pictures are real and are of a elite unit of the Chinese Military. They would be similar to the ROK Marines. I suspect you are a highly educated person who choses not to show it. Easies to act the fool that to show one is a genius.

        • WAT?

Only 6 weeks of basic training?

Well, thats pretty short for sure. Pusan Bangzi, was it mandatory service? And how long is it in Korea?

Well, here in Germany, we have three month of basic training and six month (recently only another three month) of service, which is lax enough for my liking, but still alright.
In the case of a foreign deployment (Afghanistan for example), there are at least another 4 month of specialized training.

Good times. I miss them somehow.

    • What is the fuss all about?

They’re low ranking soldiers training for cold resistance in what I’m assuming is a very cold place. Every picture states the training is for Liaoning Sectors’ Soldiers.

They’re not even elite soldiers so why compare them to SEALS? They’re fucking border patrol. After training they’ll probably spend the rest of their lives standing around saluting aristocrats. Good on them to get ready to be in

Yes it’s done in the usual overly-dramatic propagandist Chinese style but at least it makes for some entertaining morning news. It’s He Bei provincial news for crying out loud.

      Chill the fuck out people.

  5. This makes me laugh.

The Chinese have some crazy assed ideas about training for anything. For instance, local restaurant staff marching through the town square chanting “zhongguo jia you” in preparation for the upcoming shift. Not to mention the hilarious antics of Chinese people at the gym.

I invite you to spend one afternoon in the local gym where I live and you will see one or more of the following:

    – A retard dropping 20kg benchpress bar (loaded with 2.5Kg of weight either side) on their face.

    – A chinese man with no shirt on, smoking and flying backwards off a treadmill while talking on his mobile phone.

    – A 30 kilo karate master breaking his knee on a punching bag after spending the last 20 minutes slapping it (shirtless of course).

    – Some idiot trying to see if he can lift the same weights I am currently doing after I duck out for a pee and find him crying with a dislocated shoulder.

    – Someone dropping a 20 kilo plate on their foot from shoulder height and applying a cool tin of ‘wang lao ji’ to prevent swelling as the gym would never consider having medical equipment.

    – a tough man yelling and screaming when wrist curling 2 kilos (shirtless).

    – People asking if I like chinese food while I am in the middle of doing weights.

    – farting loudly when doing sit ups (ooops that was me).

    – Women wearing highheels and full prostitute clothes when on the treadmill.

There are plenty more but I wouldn’t want to seem like I am paying out chinese folk.

    • My five star hotel gym is normally used as a creche and often has a dog or two running around.
Locals often come in to walk on the tread mill once they have cranked the sound up on the television.Even though a village was leveled just outside to make way for a beautiful lake which they could just as easily walk around.

Solution… blast slayer out of the gym’s music system. Hippies and high ranking commies can’t stand slayer
      :-)

    • Nice job dissing all Chinese people while slyly boasting about yourself. insecure much? haha most women can see right through your desperation.

      • I am no Dorian Yates but I lift above average weight. While you are already hot from my last post, let me add that I am 200cm tall, weigh 110kg’s and bench press 120kg’s.

These guys I am talking about are 4ft tall and have a physical build that would have Ethiopians saying “Gee dude, dat’s a skinny mofo”.

As for being insecure, maybe I do feel a bit shy about my good looks and charming manner because it makes a lot of people feel ashamed of themselves but that is life and I need to accept my greatness.

Don’t slide off your chair dipshit.

    • Sounds like my gym. You left out the locker room though. The showers get backed up all the time creating a pool of piss I have dubbed “On Golden Pond” compelling Sinocidal TaiTai and I to R&D our idea of
SHOWER WEDGIES®. Then somebody came out with Crocs and it all went to shit. Not too keen on guys folding and unfolding their foreskins either. Ugh….I want to trade in my eyes sometimes.

    • a gym in China? where?

  6. Hmph, thought it was only Koreans who did the snow thing.

  7. Officially sponsored hazing? We do these shit in private, stateside.

  8. I’m sure most people could do that, only most aren’t stupid enough to try.

  9. Anyone notice the similarity in fashion between these guys and Vladimir Putin on holiday? I bet they couldn’t kill a tiger if it was attacking them!

In all seriousness this is not the most retarded thing to do, it is actually a sensible idea so that they know what real cold feels in a controlled environment instead of having them feel it for the first time in a life of death situation and be unprepared for it.

The presentation is however hilarious and fulled with a lot of bull shit, especially the shirtless power dance at the beginning, like it was essential for their survival!

  10. hazing…. nice…. have not heard that word in sometime

looks that way, and certainly not the officers or political commissionars doing that,

believe me I know, this training helps condition the body, also wind chill will kill you faster then lying in the snow,

and good cover when….. being shot by Americans, Canadians, Chinese, Koreans and even 同志 Great weidi and helicoptor city girl!

Where is the Nationalism! Racism and Prejudice!

    come on people get typing!

  11. i’d love to watch them train for fire resistance.

  12. How do I login to vote when there is not a login button? But then I can easily make this post without the mysterious login button.

  13. Chinese army only good at killing Chinese citizens.

    Butchers of Jun4.

    • Not just the Chinese army. Civilians were doing quite well in that department. Remember the Anti-right, Anti-land-owner, Anti-rich ? Cultural Revolution ? Great Leap Forward ? Communes ? Tens of millions of Chinese civilians were killed by Chinese civilian, way more than all killed by Chinese army during WWII and the revolutionary war combined.

  14. well done,the PLA!
We have many reasons to believe our PLA’s ability to protect our country fellows.

    • Unrealistic expectations and wishful thinking are the third and forth best Chinese characteristics.

      • Bullying weaker countries and crying back home like a little bitch (Vietnam, Cuba, North Korea, Somalia) are the 1st and 2nd best American characteristics.

        • Are you serious? Sending troops to help civilians in Somalia sure was “bullying” right? Also, North Korea invaded South Korea and the US (along with the UN) backed up the invaded nation. The same goes for the Vietnam war.
And I’m not American if you’re wondering, I’m Swedish.

  15. the second big problem of the uncensored internet in China is that propaganda targeted at the uneducated gets dissected by the educated, and makes China look bad.
If it come to war with a developed country, the ability to survive shirtless in the cold is a lot less important than the ability to use big expensive weapons paid for by your government. Then again, after generations of minimizing the value of human life (and the cost of training!) the CCP might consider losing several thousand soldiers in a ground invasion more cost effective than a sustained air campaign.

    • “losing several thousand soldiers in a ground invasion more cost effective than a sustained air campaign.”

That was (is?) the Chinese military doctrine during the Korean War, 1950′s. Been there, done that, with obvious results.

    • Putting an emphasis on manpower instead of technology worked during the Korean War didn’t it? All that artilery/aerial bombardment and you yanks still couldn’t push the PLA back from the 39th parallel. Obviously, no country (including China) can beat the USA in technological superiority and firepower, so the PLA has to find another way.

  16. So this is to prepare for another Cold War.

  17. Foreigners can’t do that, our tackle is too big.

  18. What star sizes comparison and you will be alone forever…. Not suitable for minor, I am sorry for my mistake, if leads someone trouble.

  19. Not after prolonged immersion in snow.

  20. The pictures give show that even in winter and training in snow, they don’t even have the correct colored clothing.

  21. At end, it is Swedes who will dominate world through birth canals. Good army only produce fate of spartans.
here are the total fertility rates for nations below.

    • Where are the African and Asian countries ? Misidentifying your future foe with bad intelligence will cost you dearly.

      • Everyone should take IC’s word for it without thinking about it twice. You can find the quality of an army by their birthrate. That is why the Democratic Republic of Congo will be the hegemon in one generation, holding off Guinea Bissau, biting at their heels at number 2. Sweden will have the 157th best army, whereas Japan and Germany will be 191 and 192 respectively.

This seems like a reasonable conclusion to make.

        • While we argue about which country will be dominating due to birthrates, the true enemy is making major strides…

We must not forget, Chimps are now forging spears in the tree tops and ‘sneak’ terror attacks through Oprah-publicized facial mutilations.

Let the world band together against the true Enemies of Humanity – lesser forms of primate and eskimos.

    • Since natural replacement rate is something like 2.2, most of these countries will experience negative population growth in the long run, Swedes included.

  22. Endurance of cold and wetness is an integral part of the training for American Navy Seals. It’s also the main reason many (most?) recruits quit during the training. I’m not sure if the Chinese soldiers in this story are an elite unit or if it’s necessary at all.

    • No actually it’s a border defense regiment (read 2nd line garrison units.) Being in the Liaoning military district, I would assume its principle role would be stop North Korean refugee from spilling all over China in the event of a 2nd Korean war.

  23. Fucking RED DAWN!

first the article, next what the Fing天!!!

yeah, these guys are grunts, not the spartans, different uniforms, and different environment camo,

    just for show…

comrades, lets all make sure were swings are keyboards like swords when that movie comes out,

    am really truly scared!

there will be some hard core wolverine 50c mofos coming off the mountain

the movie is obviously going to get “harmonized” or just plain banned, were all going to “get” it someway or another. The DVD shops, back of cars, in cardboard boxes on the streets, or the videosites…

everyone will see it here in the good old wild west PRC,

    nonetheless,

    get ready!

that will be something to blog about

here from ROME to Austin, Texas! (see previous 50c mofo comments+articles)

    its going to be EPIC,

  24. The People’s Liberation and North Korean armies already beat the U.S. once in the Korean War. You don’t think they could do it again?! All the U.S. has are sophisticated aircraft. U.S. soldiers can’t even fight unless they have tons of body armor and are juiced-up on hormones and psychiatric medication. And even then they can’t win. It’s why they are still losing in Afghanistan and Iraq.

  25. Isn’t bodyfat suppose to be the best resistance to the cold rather than just tense muscle heat with little insulation. Should make these guys fatter.

That should be the new army training program “Get fat!” then these guys can sit at the sknow naked all day long with their natural built in snow jackets!

    • Well maybe, but maybe not. Body fat does provide insulation, but not to the point that it can totally protect the human body from severe cold. The body compensates by reflexively generating heat (sacrificing your body’s reserve carbohydrate stores through feeding the Oxidative Phosphorylation cycle of muscles which rapidly contract and relax, building heat as a physiologic byproduct in a process called shivering). But then again, aside from the natural anatomy and physiology, the learned response is, to simply get out of the cold. You can do that by walking back into a warm house, or lacking that, burying oneself under two feet of snow, as this will lower the rate of heat transfer between one’s body and the surroundings (via conduction, convection, radiation, or evaporation). In other words, you’re augmenting natural insulation with an environmental one to achieve as low a heat transfer rate as possible. In another cold survival tactic, if one were to fall into water during winter, one must immediately get back onto dry ground and remove the wet clothing. This may seem counter intuitive, but the degree of heat loss from wet clothing (versus that of standing naked in the snow) is more rapid over that of just wet skin, which then dries relatively quickly.

  26. oh jones stop feeding the trolls, jsut ignore their antics, they are probably 50 cent members sent here to make us become disllusioned with our own very thoughts by making our heads numb from arguing with them.

remember, “knowing is half the battle” G.I JOE!

  27. “The People’s Liberation and North Korean armies already beat the U.S. once in the Korean War. ” says Maoist

114,000 Chinese dead and 380,000 wounded isn’t beating someone, its a failure to communicate. North Korea is a hell hole country where everyone is a prisoner.

  28. go operation human shield. i guess this is what y0u get when the government is as stupid as there people

  29. Damn Jones, are you payed to use this website? I literally see your picture accompanied with at least 10 posts on every article.

  30. this website has turned into a China bashing site. Ironic how most of you claim to have been there or live there. Yet, you pretend to like china in front chinese people…If only they knew your true intentions.

    • dont forget a “外地人“ bashing site….look in the mirrow!

      50c mofo helicoptor city girl!

      the article come on please!!

    • “this website has turned into a China bashing site. Ironic how most of you claim to have been there or live there. Yet, you pretend to like china in front chinese people…If only they knew your true intentions.”

For the record, I think China is a dirty disgusting shit hole third world country, and I was born there.

  31. Ok, again I ask this question and PLEASE, an intelligent answer. If you take away AMERICANS, JAPANESE AND FELLOW CHINESE, who do the Chinese people have left to hate, bitch about and find fault with? Seriously? As I read the post on China Smack, this is the subjects I read about every stinking day. How can one race be so insecure?

    • China’s just going through puberty. It explains everything.

    • The UK, we got them all hooked on Opium and nabbed a few bits of land… the fact that one of those bits of land turned into possible the greatest city in China is of course irrelevant ;)

All joking aside what we Brits did in HK was not exactly correct and not our finest hour, yet we accept and admit this and our willing to face from and learn from our past mistakes on it.

The insecurity you speak of often comes from the unwillingness to look closely at ones cultural past because you are afraid of finding something you don’t like. I don’t see people in China talking about Tienanmen or The Cultural Revolution etc. because those things do not look good… but if you don’t look at and understand them how can you make sure you avoid this happening again as you go forward?

  32. Not sure what’s the big deal. I have dipped into the ocean on New Year’s day in Boston before with a group called Polar Bear’s club. There were at least 100 of us there and the water was damn cold.

Also, if you stay at good hotels in northern europe you will may not find jacuzzis with hot water. Instead you will find cold water tubs with an ice box near by so you can add more ice. You are supposed to go into the icy cold water naked, then go into the Sauna or Hot Steam Bath.

    • What people don’t know is that being cover by snow keeps you warm, especially if the air temperature is lower than freezing. Inuits sleep naked in their igloos made of snow, in blankets. The inside snow wall surface actually melts (so it is above freezing), while the outside temperature can be tens of degrees below freezing.

And one of the trick for cold weather survival in a blizzard (snow storm with tens of degrees below freezing) is to dig a snow cave and stay inside. Snow is an amazing insulator.

    • “You are supposed to go into the icy cold water naked, then go into the Sauna or Hot Steam Bath.”

Shouldn’t that be the other way around, at least in Sweden ? You get real red and sweating in the sauna and then jump into a freezing lake to cool off ?

  33. China is imitating all the bad parts of recent America. They give all their profits to small percentage of well connected people, they build to over development, they spend crazy percentage of their budget on military, and get their uneducated poor people to jump around like monkeys to train for some stupid battle that is completely unnecessary and probably never happen. When are poor people going to stop jumping around like monkeys to protect rich people’s interests? Who are these monkeys training to fight? Eskimos? Who are the American monkeys training to fight? Some sheep boinkers in Afghanistan mountains. Military build up only creates resentment around the world. It only brings eventual trouble. China will be resented like America is some day soon. If China ever makes teh mistake to use military might to protect their interests, it will create world hatred against China. And their ain’t enough Chinese to stop that hatred.

  34. Holy Harbin,
Does anyone know where this happened? shit it reminds me of what happened in that Japanese concentration camp… 731 or something. Dumb recruits? I dont think so, this training gets them to build trust in their commander and confidence in their comrades… I mean after all those Japanese experiments, if the CCP let one of the PLA trainees get frost bite or anything that’d be embarrassing. Let’s keep lao bai xing employed, support the social harmony!

  35. Liaoning

    how is your hanzi?

  36. The human body has limits. Do they really think they can train people into steel/iron?

Fast as a Chinese Crested Dog, tough as China Leather Combine leather and hard as Sinosteel steel…

  37. Cool. This is ideal training to prepare the army to re-take Taiwan in the event it declares independence.

Maybe the military planners can learn from Russian PM’s Putian trip to Siberia :P

  38. The power of the PLA is impressive

  39. 2012 quote “only the people who had green cards could board the ark to be saved.”

  40. china’s army is just about number…
    this training is useless

  41. Good that China and the PLA is still doing this sort of pointless ‘hardening-up’ training.
Nowadays generation isnt as hard as their grandfathers anymore, who rushed into three vicious wars with nothing but a Dadao-Broadsword and their courage.
When I read reports from the Korean War, where the PVA-soldiers destroyed American Tanks with satchel-charges, delivered with bare hands to their tracks, I doubt that nowadays children would have the courage and determination for these suicide attacks.

At least with these seemingly pointless training sessions, we can hope that our 80′s and 90′s generation can ‘man-up’ a bit to defend China’s sovereignity.

  42. This is brainwashing, not training.

  43. octavian (aka San Soucri)

Who are they planning on fighting? The Chinese “work” hard, but never smart.

  44. Defend China – what bullshit. Who is going to invade China? China is just pulling its small cock in an effort to make it look bigger.

  45. While living in a colder climate will help you tolerate cold weather to some degree, this sort of “training” will only give you frostbite. It’s better to be a little bit chilly for a long time each day over months than to freeze your ass off for a short time on a few days.

  46. A few years ago there was one better, with soldiers naked in the snow in circles, embracing each other and massaging each other… Really weird, really queer, hahahahaha.

  47. Frozen meat for the next cultural revolution.

  48. You all need to relax. There is no way of knowing how long they were in the snow. A few minutes to make your mind tougher is ok. And yes… the coordinated ‘stage dives’ into pre-piled mounds of powder is totally a propoganda move. Such BS…

  49. Do they have topless training for the mini-skirt chicks that marched in Beijing for the 50th anniversary?

  50. Clearly they haven’t done any research on what actually affects the body.

From proper Scientific Research the US Special Forces have learned that the body can adapt excellently to heat, after about 2 weeks, but not to cold. Frequent exposure of the hands to cold causes the hands to have more blood and be more mobile, but then more body heat is lost this way; so it’s a trade off and not an all-around adaption. If one is training as a fit individual at a high intensity, one can increase one’s ability to produce heat by 7 times. So, it is possible to do some cold training to condition the mind, as long as the body is moving intensively at the same time. SEALs tread water to do this kind of training…

Sometimes, SEALs do just lay down in cold surf, but it is not below 32 degrees, they are in much better physical condition than the men above (with much more muscle to protect their vital organs from the cold), they do not lay in the surf for more than 15 minutes at a time (because the heat production generated by heavy exercise that they performed befored they laid in the surf starts to shut down), and they have instructors carefully trained to recognize the symptoms of hypothermia…many of which involve getting a good look at their face, so they cannot be laying face down.

Of course, buring people in snow is what people do in the wilderness to survive; so while it’s not comfortable, it does allow you to trap heat, so it’s much safer than prolonged exposures where the individual is laying in cold surf or on top of snow, unburied… so not really a training exercise, but then, they’re not learning how to properly bury themselves in snow either…

…The SEAL commentary would be something like: “Everything you ladies have performed in this evolution has been SAD, WEAK, and UNREADABLE”. The last word meaning, basically, no one qualified can understand exactly what they are trying to do.
