On Tianya, Mop, LiuLiu (and many other Chinese forums):

Reflections in the midst of extreme poverty and filth — a record of a trip in India

India is the dirtiest country I have ever been to. I have heard people say that Pakistan, which is to the west and Bangladesh, to the east, are worse, but that is probably beyond the limits of my imagination.

In two months in India, I went from south to north, visiting some tourist towns that I had read about. I also went by train and bus to countless towns and open fields that weren’t so famous, and everywhere there were people had something in common — dirty, messy and stank. Interestingly, I also saw countless foreigners having a great time.

Feces all over the ground in India.

A holy ground covered with feces! Note: No toilet paper!

Tourists have been coming for years to the small town of Bodhgaya , the place where 2500 years ago Buddha achieved enlightenment, bringing their foreign money to the pockets of a few hotels and tourism operators, but still they live in abject poverty. The streets are lined with rubbish, wild animals squabble to find their breakfast in it. Look carefully and find wild pigs, dogs, mountain goats, and sometimes even cows, which are considered sacred, make an appearance. No wonder the locals don’t each much meat, these animals depend on trash to survive.

Cow dung is the most environmentally friendly fuel source

India is very dry, and vegetation scarce. Sometimes you’ll sweep your eyes over the horizon and only see a barren expanse. Rural villagers use firewood, but like using cow dung more. In cities and towns, sacred cows fill the streets, defecating wherever they please. Cow dung is the most eco-friendly kindling of all, and this means less trees need to be cut down. Moreover if the manure that is produced is not removed daily, a small town would probably quickly drown in it.

You often see see women collecting fresh manure, packing it together with hay using both hands, then carefully sticking it against a wall to dry. The manure largely contains grass that the sacred cows are unable to digest. For Indians, this kind of smell is natural, and tourists who have stayed awhile get used to it. In my two months in India, I learned to accept the piles of cow dung that fill the streets, and their all pervading odor. Compared with the smell of the dung of carnivores, the smell isn’t as strong. Indians have an undying reverence for their sacred cows, which makes me automatically think of people in the modern age and their frivolous materialism.

Puri is a tourist hot spot on the east coast, where heaven and hell come together. One side of town is the hotel area, with its picturesque beaches, the other side is a poor fishing village. The inhabitants’ straw huts are lonely islands in a sea of trash, and I got the feeling that it’s never taken away. The most shocking thing: every villager would defecate on the beach. It wasn’t only villagers who would take a crap on the beach, out in the suburbs you’d get used to seeing people doing it on the side of the road, and the Indian men would do it out in the open, never sneaking off to a secluded spot in the undergrowth. Everywhere from small towns to large cities would have men showing the special characteristics of their culture; even in the major city of Kolkata [Culcutta], on the most upmarket of streets, were white collar workers carrying briefcases walking past crowds of people urinating against walls.

One can’t criticise people for reliving themselves on the beach or in a field, after all this is what our ancestors had to do, all the Indians are doing is preserving a natural way of life that has continued for tens of thousands of years. This is one of the most natural parts of the way people there live, and it’s only we foreigners who make a fuss about it. It’s just that urinating on the street in a big city after all isn’t very decent, but I am sure that with the increasing pace of modernization, India’s cities will very quickly take on a new look. China’s toilet usage/habits have come a long way in the past ten years, so is there any reason that India, another ancient Eastern civilisation, can’t do the same?

I am filthy, but I am brilliant. In the ancient city of Varanasi [Benares], on the banks of the Ganges, all the sewage created by people relieving themselves on the ground in corners, and the rubbish, everything flows into that sacred river, the same water where pilgrims come from all over, brushing their teeth, washing their faces, bodies, and swimming. However, the dirty Ganges and Varanasi are India’s most beautiful place, lots of foreigners love it, staying for months at a time. I lived there for a while, living like a local, swimming in the river like one of them. The ancient town’s intense artistic spirit and religious fervour made me forget material poverty. This important part of the Indian psyche is passed down even today: the spirit is greater than physical riches.

India is indeed “dirty”, “messy” and “smelly” but I have gotten more out of it than any other place I have been. If this wasn’t the case in my two months I wouldn’t have met so many expats who return often, or never leave. As the Taiwanese dancer Lin Huaimin said, whenever he is stuck for artistic inspiration, he goes back to India.

Maybe only in the most disgusting of material surroundings, and the basest living conditions can we find the most profound spiritual enlightenment.

Let’s put the corpses-in-the-Ganges-River aside for a moment, and talk about Indians using the toilet. Have a look at the three pictures below…

These three toilet photographs represent three levels of toilets in India. Note what is common to all of them, which is that none of them have any toilet paper, but all of them have a bucket of water at arms length… yes, you’ve guessed correctly, Indians don’t use toilet paper when using the toilet, they use their hands. After defecating, you use your left hand finger to wipe the feces around your anus, and then use the water in the bucket to wash your hand. The custom is to use your left hand to wipe your butt, so when you go into a store to select food, you mustn’t use your left hand.

JY people believe, this is actually is a good habit. The first benefit is that cases of hemorrhoids are significantly lower; the second is that it can greatly save paper, good for protecting the earth’s resources and the development of green initiatives. So just by doing this, it saves a great amount of wood.

I’m not sure if I should bring out this photo…a sick elderly person, lonely standing by the Ganges River. I don’t know if he is appreciating the true meaning of life or bemoaning the helplessness of human existence…that helpless expression…that remarkable face carved by the years…is unforgettable…

Don’t look if you won’t like it…you are responsible for yourself…

The tour guide said that this kind of fish in the Ganges is called “Gulang” fish, a very nice sounding name…and it is said the flavor is very good, but upon thinking of the corpses soaking in the water, the soap from the bathing, the garbage by the river…I don’t have the courage to try it, not sure if this kind of fish will have a human flesh flavor…

This needs no introduction as many compatriots are able to eat it domestically [in China]…but a reminder, never eat an authentic one…because the chef uses his left hand to wipe his shit when using the toilet/restroom.

Comments from Tianya:

白_马_非_马 (on Tianya) & 君子坦蛋蛋 (on LiuLiu):

I just want to say, there are a lot of places in China that are just the same. Don’t use the same air of superiority that Hong Kong and Taiwan people have when they look at mainlanders to look at India. I don’t like it.

英语绵绵 (on Tianya) & 七夜 (on LiuLiu):

All this is easy to fix, just use violence. China uses the hukou system to keep the poor population from settling in cities, and then uses chengguan to beat the rabble to death. The cities will then look very nice.

bjwh50: (responding to above comment)

Actually, this is exactly how America does it, using violence to beat the Indians [Native Americans] to death, pushing the Asian, African, and poor out into the country, running the poor white people into the surrounding outskirts of the cities. America’s police are even more terrible than China’s chengguan. If you’re within two meters of a police officer, you have to raise your hands, otherwise American police have the right to shoot you dead.

怎样走路 (on Tianya) & 绿毛怪 (on LiuLiu):

Taking a bath in this kind of river water…

And they say you will receive spiritual enlightenment…

Lou zhu might as well go try a septic tank, and see if you achieve even greater enlightenment, even greater consolation/comfort.

This kind of filthy country doesn’t think it is a shame but instead thinks it is glorious. Truly speechless.

yoonkyesanglover:

That’s their place, they can do what they like, why discriminate?

看不下去说三句:

How is India a democratic country? Would a democratic country divide society into four levels [castes]?

飙破:

There’s truly something wrong with Indian people.

乔治咖啡:

The Indians’ widespread use of cow dung, JY can say that this is their ancient wisdom, an understanding of eco-friendliness.

In the late 1970 when the West’s interest in China was kicking off, a French television channel did a show about China, and mentioned that the bicycle was the major mode of transport for two thirds of Beijingers. The host said these ancient people really understood how to live in harmony with nature, which is why they chose such a environmentally friendly way of getting around, and that it made them Europeans feel ashamed.

keanuzhu1982:

Wasn’t it said that they are thrown into the Ganges River after being cremated?

What do you do if you were swimming in the Ganges and accidentally ran into a corpse?

edali:

Kosuke Kindaichi said in a murder case, the hardest thing for a murderer to do is getting rid of the body.

Kosuke Kindaichi has obviously never been to India, because in India, getting rid of a body is too simple. Just buy some firewood and burn the body in broad daylight will do it. Murderers that are truly lazy murderers can just throw the corpse in a river and be done with it.

Comments from Mop:

jameskin:

When Indians themselves see how dirty India is, how bodies float in the river, they don’t feel bad about it???

伽菲肥猫:

Although different people have their own customs, after seeing the photos above, I feel that these things that Indian people do can’t be called customs. It is simply uncivilized, inhumane! I really think that have not evolved fully! Savages!

{白痴}:

Although India is poor
The people have a lot of money
In this year’s list of richest people
There are a lot of Indians.

雷丽雅:

This civilisation is too distinctive.

会飞的大象:

I still think a sky burial would be easier to accept!~~~~~~~~~~~~~

米猪硬砸:

These aren’t pictures of Afghanistan or Iraq, right? TV can trick people.

Hell on earth.

nearoye:

You’ve successfully made me nauseous, this post has completely changed how I look at India~~~

Comments from LiuLiu:

不是一般人:

India is a democratic country with down to earth people.

The many dead animals above would have long ago been taken away by unscrupulous peddlers to be sold as food in China.

天下第一:

My God! Bodies can be seen so easily in the river! The Lou zhu was even able to take photos! It’s hard to imagine how calmly the Indians face death!

禁止登录:

Bodies floating in Chinese rivers aren’t unheard of (drowning victims, people who have fallen in, those who kill themselves, can be found anywhere). In recent years, changes have been widespread and only after they have finished will this situation change.

As for going swimming amongst dead bodies, people from different perspectives have different thinking, just like how the Chinese can’t understand how the Africans eat mice, and the Africans can’t see how the Chinese eat frogs.

騎豬趕驢:

India is so dry, you really think people want to live like that?

[You don't think] they don’t want to live well? Don’t want to be like us and drink water from a faucet? To bathe in and drink clean water?

We can’t look at them in that way, they live like that because they have no other choice.

Filthy India, Chinese reaction. Come on, with a title like that and a majority of pics just of dead corpses with your speel shows just how much of a lack of understanding of the culture you can have. This is not new news for India so I’m guessing it’s the first time for you to be there.
There are many things you could’ve written for an “India smack” take (leaches sucking off the human eye!!) but you wanted to focus on the dead bodies in the river thing. Like the first post, there are plenty of places that are just as bad in China (even worse) so please forgive me if I’m finding it hard to see when China has in my mind, the most outlandish behaviour (in most cases this is due to my lack of understanding of the country’s culture which is common with all people who aren’t familar with new countries they visit).
Posting an article like this should be for your personal blog, not here. Makes you look like you kinda unworldly.

A chinese website that covers chinese domestic issues all of a sudden putting pictures from Varanasi, India. Strange!!!

[Note from Fauna: We do you say we cover domestic Chinese issues?]

Its pretty obvious its done just to get hits and comments. Easiest way to get lot of hits is by putting up such stuff.

China is no different but they live with it. Their lakes are filled with industrial waste material and their once-fertile lands are destroyed, killing lot of life. Their children and their grand parents suffer a lot of health problems mainly bones and skin. They don’t take care of their own labours who work in factories and all, left to rot once their are done.

Every country has their own “Garbage pile” somewhere stacked away. No1 can be proud of it, nor it can be hid. We either live through it or make improvements slowly.

as a chinese I want to say a few things
first – this post is not for english world – it was posted at a chinese website and not for external use, don’t know how chinasmack got hold it, it could be illegal

also, the poster is not posting this to embarass india, as i know there are all kinds radcial post in china now amongst
chinese forum and its purpose is to get as much attention as
      possible

please indian brothers and sisters don’t feel offended too muvh about this, china was being posted all kinds of “embarasssing” posts all over – it’s no big deal – let them talk.

however, as someone aslo from a developing country – china
a few word to my borthers and sisters in india – pleaes work hard – please make some sacrifce for your country and people

talk is cheap, and from what i see – in cases like this apparently the government is not doing its job, you need a big change – i m not against democracy in india – however “democracy” without a STRONG and EFFICENT CENTRAL government is useless in a country like india

No individual or organization can fix this kind of issue – only the government has the power and resource to address it

Make a drastic change – try it and do it

foreigners on ths thread please be more civilized, please don’t make fun of them – only animals do that

I am 1000% sure not all india is like this, and I am 100000% sure not all indian are like that – but with this said, this is truly a shame for brothers and sisters

brothers, sisters, work on it – for your kids and your country – you guys need to make some sarifices – only you yourself can
fix it – miracle could only happen through you

to my pakistan brothers here- i know you guys have a big issue with your indian friends – please be compassinate
and do the same – work to improve your country and your peoeple also a big thank you for your help during china’s natural disaster – we truely appreciated it and we will take REAL action to show our appreciation

To some people that trying to plant hatred among chinese and indian – please don’t waste your time – we may have big disagreement with them, we may have big quarrel – but we are working hard to build a friendship with them

Go forward my indian cousin and brothers – don’t hide – don’t boast the untrue – don’t let this overwhelm you – work on it and with 20 thousands indian man – it will be cleaned up

with a strong government and policy and determination
      it will be kept clean

pour money into your country ‘s infracture – with humility, with determination, with a will to suffer, with shame but with pride
work on this my brothers – it could be done and will be done

Your chinese brother from China – with love

      • passing chinese

btw – china has kinds of problems too – and we are also working on it – indian brothers and sister are doing the same thing

with hard work and determination eventually this will change
        NEVER give up

yea people feel the love! ;)

others can go eat shit! yea d same….

I have been there myself, and yes I do agree that there is a lot of stuff in the ganges, and here’s why
Poeple living here are illiterate and practicing 1000s of years worth of ancient tradition even today, which is not very env friendly. But I didn’t see any corpses. This is a bit hard to believe, since the general population around here is usually staunch Hindus and according to Hinduism the body should be cremated for the freedom of the soul. I would ask this blogger, is that all you saw in India? Then you really wasted your ticket.

Looking at what chinese have in meal, you don’t have a right to point fingers at Indians.

It’s the poor adminishtration and the uncontrollable population that’s bringing the country down. Blaming Indians is no going to be of any help here.

Whoever took these picks was a sick, wicked fellow.I mean this is all he could manage in his trip to India?
Thats shows his real motive for coming to India. To show the sad and appalling side.
I don’t see a single, easy to look pic in this collection.

I lived in india for 20 years and have never seen these ugly pictures whatsoever, some places in india must be dirty or whatever but not all, these pictures are taken in the villages, suburb or small towns in india, the real india isnt like this, n yeah China is not less, ive been to china n taiwan, its not so clean also, i dont giv a shit if im a chinese but yeah its true china n taiwan isnt so clean, washrooms in china n taiwan r dirty, n in taiwan theres no toilet paper or water even to wash ure stinky butts, atleast in india there are water to keep ure butts clean.
and yeah indians dont eat humans like you chinese people do.

atleast indians dont make duplicate things like china does.

whoever took these picture i guess that person dint visit big cities in india and big hospitals and other sorts of things.
well i guess this person took only these pictures to show how dirty india is. u should take pictures of your villages in china, n post it on this blog .

    • http://thecapitalinthenorth.blogspot.com jixiang

      1) the chinese don’t eat humans either. 2) I have been to India, and I have seen very poor slums right in the middle of Mumbai. There’s one right next to the international airport, so it was the first thing I saw coming to India. There is dirt and poverty everywhere in India, even in the main cities, and public hospitals are terrible everywhere.

    • thu hang

i think we shouldn’t say about the dirty or the ugly pics. let’s see the people who in the pics. why did they do that? and how to change this. don’t compare it with anything or any other country

  • mahnoosh

Why do not you just picture a certain point of India’s current show? Millions of Muslim lives in India (close to 200 million)
Muslims consider unclean corpses and Ann are buried in the soil. Also, if one’s touched corpses should be all her body wash
The Muslims consider unclean shit and the piss and it completely clean by water
i am not indian or chinees but i am a moslem iranian from i.r.of iran

You know where this doesn’t occur? America. Now there’s a lot wrong with my country, but damn…the basic level of sanitation here is worse than that of Iraq. In that country garbage is pretty bad too and people do poop in the streets (with open sewage coursing through many roads), but at least they bury their dead and the hot semi-arid landscape dries the poop whereupon is blows away as dust.

I’d sooner brush my teeth in the L.A. river, or the Delaware just south of Newark, NJ than I would anywhere in India. It’s absolutely disgusting the amount of filth flowing in that river. I know poverty is a barrier to many of the finer things in life but basic sanitation can make life stable enough to develop an economy. Stop having 6-8 children per woman while you’re at it. There’d be more food to go around and the farmers would be able to keep up with technological growth.

  • Deepak

India was the dirtiest, smelliest most fking disgusting place I’ve ever seen and the people were the rudest, sleaziest most arrogant fking people I’ve ever dealt with.
Hope the country sinks and disappears taking its population with it.

    • OD

But why do you have an indian name then ? Was your mom impregnated by Indian guy ?

  • furnace

never been to india/ganges but its kind of what i expected and is pretty disgusting to me. as for washing your ass after taking a shit, its actually the more sanitarty thing to do. when you wipe with tp, you are simply smudging it for it to dry and stay until you shower. when you wash it away you are getting rid of all the disease and bacteria that comes with the poop. traditionally you use your left hand to wipe but in my home and most arab countries (i think even in indian/pak upperclass homes) you would have a bidet or something like a showerhead next to the toilet. then you would simply use the pressure from the faucet to blow off all the crap and use tp to dry.

    RELIGIOUS PROBLEM.

The people you see there are POOR, UNEDUCATED, and raised with beliefs of FAIRY TALES like the holiness of the river in question.

Cremated people are scattered there because its HOLY, they wash there because its HOLY. They drink the water because they think its MAGIC (oooo… GOD!) The corpses you see are insufficiently burned cremations.. the super poor can’t spend the resources / energy enough fuel to to a proper burning..

Go into any city in india and ask even the lowest chai wallah if he wants to drink a cup of water out of the Ganges and they would look at you like you’re insane.

There are equivalently stupid RELIGIOUS people all over the world (mostly not their fault – they were raised that way from childhood). EXAMPLE – In the UNITED STATES you hear of Christian people refusing to give their children medical care because they believe it goes against GOD and that GOD should heal the children.

These pictures are akin to the article that came out recently showing kittens in cages boiled alive for food in China.. this is obviously only a practice in a single province which a few people practice but the article is set in such a fashion to imply that Chinese everywhere enjoy killing cats in a painful fashion before eating them.

Same thing with this article, a very one-sided view showcasing only some of the most unfortunate poor people in the country.

    • misses

that’s as pretty wise stuff you wrote there. =)

  • InstantNoodles

I’ve heard about the river burial tradition from co-workers, but seeing so many photos made the feeling completely different.

Just like I’ve seen the Chinese rural poor on TV and heard all the stories. But when I went back to my mom’s home town, and saw the farmer population in stark contrast to the town’s richer residents, what I felt was completely different too.
(When my mom went back by herself recently, she said all the farmlands around the town are gone, replaced with western style houses for those with $$. The mountains were mostly green and the farms were beautiful. What I remembered the most were fields of cultivated lotus flowers. All gone now. No idea where the farmers went, whether they were properly compensated, or how they are making a living now.)

I had many Indian and Pakistani co-workers, and despite the cultural, religious, and heck political differences, I can also find many similarities in our strengths and faults, views and habits. In the end the differences in no way prevented us from working and playing well together. (And also bitch about the Chinese/Indian/Pakistani governments and the amount of crap that goes on.)

Had the original photographer had the same experience, working together in a friendly environment on a person to person basis, he may be far more sympathetic than condescending.

Now if only our countries can do the same…

    Oh who am I kidding.

  • dude

Don’t try to brand it under ‘culture/tradition’ and get away with it. I am from Nepal and we are also Hindus. The only way to ‘dispose’ a body in a true hindu manner as followed in Nepal is to properly cremate the body with wood and scatter the ashes into the river, after ensuring that the entire body has burnt and turned to ash. With what careless abandon the bodies are floating as shown in the pictures reveals nothing but carelessness.

  • Parimal Ajudiya

i am also indian, and still living in india’s gujarat state (rajkot city),
i agree that india is dirty everyware, and in matter of varanasi, its due to hindu people, if anyone want to clean gangesh river then they must 1st fight with Hinduism, yes i am also hindu but don’t have enough strength to fight with my religious, wish someone can trow nuclear bomb on india soon as possible,so we all bad people die at once because there are no way to change india from any point, and please i request to all people of world, don’t look at india with bad view, we are also want our country clean and fresh everyware, people of around world is watching indian as bad and dirty people due to picture like varanasi but we also have heart, we also feel shame on our country, india is not third world, if i write all about my feeling and my country then you will bored, we ask your forgiveness for things like varanasi, please try to understand other people of india who is against varanasi, thoi don’t need to write more, good people will understand good people so, and yes sorry for my bad english

From a nature-based spirituality to a full-fledged religion of bigotry that led to the invention of countless social barriers and discriminatory policies, I blame ‘indian-ness’ for the distortion of what hindiusm once stood for.
The practices in Nepal are far more sanitary and agreeable to than what you would come across in India. The monkeys in the south ruined everything and now this guy is blaming it on hinduism. Blame your indian-ness for it, smelly indians.

      • passing chinese

to my idian brothers and sisters again from passing chinese

first, my sincere apology that some of my inconsiderate brother
in china posted such a post and picture in china (not at chinasmack – not for english world – again i want to emphasize)
i sure think it’s much better if he could post some positive things about India – a great and noble country in many people ‘s mind – however with that said, i am not saying there
no bad things in china – come on we have 1.3 billion people and there are alot very very very very very very bad things in china and it’s true – you can find all kinds of nasty images about my country all over the place – i am sure you can find them if you want.

with that said – all those strongly disturbing images of china/india is just part of the fact – not the whole picture, agreed?

I know my people ‘s weakness and i don’t want to hide it also i have no interest to broadcast it – there are people who are doing this and i think in a way it’s not a bad thing, it help us realize that how hard we should work to improve, to catch up

you said chinese could be hanged in china without knowing what happened, it’s true – but it’s a very small number, maybe 0.000000001% – and that could happen in any country – any where – without or with the government’s endorsment – and this has nothing to do with democracy, brother i know you may disagree – but let’s agree to disagree – it will take too much time to explain and argue – let’s respect each other’s opion and move forward – let’s reach over and shake hand say ni hao

there’s all kind of problems in china – it’s very true , and we too are ashamed of it and we are working hard to get rid of them
it could never be done – but it will definitly improve – enough to make china a proud member once again

we believe we are far from there yet – however we are sure we are already seeing the hope and the dawn is comming

we are 100% sure that after 30 years most chinese will become quite affluent because we are working on it and we see our progress every SINGLE day

When it come to hard work – we chinese can really boast about it – with pride or shame, with humility and with
determination, we are hard working and we will get it done

we know we are far far far far from being respected and far far far far from being perfect – but we are 100000% sure we will
be there and it getting closer every SINGLE day

we are progressing – we are working – we are shamed into being humble- we are shamed into being hard working
we are cultured to be humble – we are cultured to be hard working and we are proud to work hard to see our result – yes brother that’s us

and brother you know – we may be poor – we may be scorned upon, we may be laughed at and we know it – and we are determined to change it

but we are a pretty big country and with one of the strongest defense in the world – we don’t want to bully others – just to ensure that NONE dare to bully us – and no one DARE

Some of us may talk big – but from my experience we are not talking big people – we don’t play “freedom” “democracy” games as those are some luxury for affluent people – many chinese think those are games played by western powers to reboot the game and play their way, sorry please stay the fuck off, we have seen too much hypocricy from the west and we will NEVER trust them and they will NEVER succeed

after all – china is too far behind developed country, just like india ( no offense here – you can disagree) both are huge and very populous country – both need STRONG and EFFICIENT government to work – we are not usa, we are not britain, we are not japan

usa is much more developed than us, they started industrialization 200 years before us, 200 years!
their people at that time are way up in the competitive ladder than us in Asia – we were FAR behind then – not of the same class at all – they have far more resource, both materially and intellectually than us – their system works pretty ok for them
china is very different, will not copy theirs

ok, my indian brothers and sisters – work hard for your kid,
for your country, for your people – in doing that we together will make the world a better place

we will do the same in china

        yours

chinese brother from china – with respect

        • Antz

i am Indian, what is shown is true we lack a lot of things which might be given for most other countries, but nothing that is shown or portrayed is shown as lie either.

Both sides are true they are like two faces of a same coin. its this diversity that makes both China and India so vibrant and yet strange.

We have our problems but we are fighting and coming out. We have corruption and dishonesty but its out of poverty which is there. Our priorties also at times look jumbled up as why spend money of games rather than upliftment of people. However its an aspiring bunch of people who want to do more than just always survive more to live a life.

Given a chance I would still want to be born only in India or if not India then China.

My respect for what you wrote, How I wish something could be done for our mid-history. I said mis-history coz I feel its strangely post 1950 that Indian and China became like Step-brothers who dont see each other in eye always. However before that era of travellers, era of trades or even era of Buddha which united us strangely is forgotten.

Hope we see very soon a same morning with same emotion.

And peace to whole world. Yes Indians are strange. But thats makes us what we are. We are strangely more warmer than any one else you can meet, we can be strangely more friendlier and hospitable than any place, our food can be strangely spicer than most food, and same time we have strange politicians, strange countrymen who feel politics is such mess that we dont want to enter that system.

Am sad to hear many travellers and people from other countries who are carrying such bad emotions about their India visit. I just hope some day we could change your nightmares to beautiful dreams.

To all Pakistan friends, strangely outside India we stick together and can be best of buddies and in our respective countries we hate each other. Way I and my friends see we hate your politicians and ours. We all feels its they who divide us. Its not you or me who do that.

Lastly thanks again Chinese brother from China – With respect

      • Vince

@dude, please try to address other people with respect instead of being a dick, don’t categorize all indians based on the actions of a few. Keep ur posts succinct, using a derogatory tone only makes u look racist and a d-bag.

at least international reporters are allowed to take such photos in india, if they tried taking photos of some of the horrendous things happening in rural china they would be imprisoned and have their cameras confiscated

  • Indianguy

I dont subscribe to these practices of throwing bodies in the ganges,to me it feels like an insult to the human death.

I just wanted to make a point to all those who feel using water to clean their anus is yucky.Cleaning something with water especially human waste is far more effective and sanitary then merely wiping it with a piece of tissue.Lets say you get your hands dirty while playing outside, so how do you clean it then ? Do you just go for a tissue box and try to wipe all the dust, grit away or do you go to the wash and clean it with water and soap ? You use the water+soap way.

Same thing we do in the loo. We use water to clean off any shit sticking to the anus and then we “wash our freaking hands with soap”.We dont just move around with filthy hands.

And to all those who feel “Ew its human shit. How can someone touch it by hand.Yuck.” You all are hypocrites who think this way.You conveniently forgot the fact that – you all carry that shit in your colon, rectum, intestine basically in your body. But once its outside the body you feel yuck about it.Hypocrisy of the highest order.Just because you cannot see the shit moving around in your body it doesnt mean its not there. But you guys have no problems with that. You guys have a problem when it leaves the body and that your own personal shit.

  • Son

India is a amazing place yes it still has a lot of work to do in regards of hygiene in rural areas but just think of extremely greedy officials taking food, money, clothes intended for poor people and using it for their benefits that the poor have no choice it is either do or die and judging by the pictures they do what they can.

I have been to many times India and it is such a deeply beautiful country but evil influences are ruining it and taking away its natural essence. These pictures are manipulated to a degree this area is sacred, rituals, customs, life and death are celebrated which has taken place for centuries these people don’t know how the other half live most of them still own a black and white tv.

So next time you buy a Starbucks coffee just think that the money you spend is going to a company which is driving out traditional businesses in poorer countries to simply become richer.
There are reasons to why poor countries live in such impoverished circumstances and lets not forget the UK’s as well as many others role in robbing India of it’s much wealth shame on you.

  • Sean H

Please just view the images and appreciate them for what they are and what you have and do not have. India is a very complicated society and the cultrual is very rich, strange and some parts still stuck in the stone age. Yes, these scenes at the Ganges shores are horrible and beyond the Western imagination but I had traveled to India many times and there are much beauty elsewhere in this country. Everytime I returned to US, I am so thankful a lot more for what I have. That is the beauty of world traveling.

  • Balaji

Dear brothers and sisters – I am an indian, but my intention is not to defend the honour of India, nation is a social structure created by humans to improve the scope of survival, just like another successful social structure created for same reason called “family”, to take sides in the name of nation, religion or race is similar to taking sides in the name of favorite football clubs, hence i dont feel the need to take sides, having said that, i am writing this comment only because, i know the people in these pictures because i am one of them. my hope is to provide a better understanding about the above pictures- First, cleanliness- survival takes priority over cleanliness, cleanliness will naturally improve when standard of living (in terms of wealth) increases. that is why most places in india which has more than a billion people is dirty, if anyone says ‘china is better in cleanliness’ then we are happy for china and india will also get there in its own way, in its own pace. but as of now in india, most people dont have the luxury to worry about foriegners with cameras. second, religion- its difficult to understand the so called hindu religious faith, because hinduism is not a religion at all, just like, many different people who speak different languages, who followed different culture and customs grouped together by circumstance to form modern India. Many different customs and cultures with different gods grouped together by circumstance to form hinduism. But it is the most potent and exotic mix you can ever come across. Let me guess, when you see these pictures you may see death, disease and disgust, right. But let me write about something you dont see. I have taken part these kind of festivals. this is my experience, me, my father, my mother and my two sisters will travel 5 hours in a crowded bus to the town that hosts this festival, we stay in a hotel the previous day, then the next morning we will go to the temple and we will wait to see the statue of god that will be taken as a procession, we have to go early to get a good spot or else we will not be able to see the god’s statue, we will be standing for 6 to 7 hours in sweltering heat among a crowd of 50,000 people, after getting the glimpse of the statue, we will take a dip in the holy river because by doing that we believe we are relieved from all our past mistakes and when we come home, we will feel very relieved and all of us will return with the hope tomorrow will be better. You call it superstition, you call indians as barbarians, you call indians dirty, But the people in this picture dont care about what you think. they are walking home with love and hope which cannot be disturbed by filth around them. one other thing, regarding people taking bath in a river where dead bodies were thrown, i dont want to go into details, i will just say, there are few things that we can understand only when we experience it.

  • Michiti

Your post stinks of bullshit. The carcuses look fake. And your description of India is a bit exaggerated. Plus all the photos you took are of the rubbish piles – what about the clean and good parts of India?

      • Balaji

Just a thought, i dont know whether that ‘Passing chinese’ is an Indian or not, but i am just wondering, isnt that something that you should be proud about. If some foreigner calls themselves ‘Passing indian’ i for one will feel proud and welcoming because i believe it means they like India or atleast they are interested in India. If any foreigner is taking time to come to this site and post his/her view, doesnt it mean that they are interested in China. Some foreigners may have a positive view and some may have negative view but the fact that they are here means they care about China, isnt that a good thing. And if you have not guessed my nationality from my name, i am an Indian. And you can take your best shot at me but i will never lose my love and respect for you, where ever you may live, what ever maybe the colour of your skin, what ever maybe your religion, what ever maybe your ideology, where ever you may have born, the fact is there is not much difference between you and me. What ever you say, what ever you do, i will love you as much as i love myself.

I have to say-some of this was truly disturbing. But this doesn’t give people the right to diss India and make racist remarks as seen above. Although these people are poor, I know there are a lot of Indians who look down on what’s going on on the banks of the Ganges. Surely deceased humans should be treated in a dignified manner? Returning humans to Mother Earth, beautiful as this may sound, only works in a somewhat abstract context. Human burials should be dignified and discreet. There is nothing poetic about a vulture gnawing at some poor woman’s abdomen.
This should be the government’s #1 priority-cleaning up the Ganges. Not building nukes or competing with China, or attracting foreign investment.
Allow me to say that building homes made out of dung is fine-so long as it is done in a hygienic manner, it’s not really an ‘absurd’ thing. People really do have a way of spinning things without contextualizing them.

      • Dave

It is a question of intelligence. The median IQ (intelligence quotient)
        of India is 81.

        • Vince

For the love of God, it has more to do with religion than intelligence, if that was the case then Indians with IQ’s of 81 who were Muslims and Christians would be doing the very same thing. Take a minute to think before making a post. It’s only isolated to the Ganges, so tell me how would it correlate to IQ points?

    • You’reStupid

What the f*uk are you talking about?
      You should first learn Chinese.

The article was translated from Chinese to English for your benefit, free of charge. It wasn’t well translated but you should have accepted this lapse in the translation quality when you decided to read here. Pea-brain.

Learn Chinese, then read the orignal Chinese version to find out how stupid you are.

And you should ask your police to quit shooting ordinary people for not holding their hands up when ordered to.

Dude stop the act, native americans have better things to do than come on this forum to post comments about india, post as u are. Read this first http://uk.news.yahoo.com/22/20101101/tts-uk-global-economy-ca02f96.html , chinese and indians should be working together not against. I’ve done my part, my wife is chinese haha

    • Kenny

      1) Are you sure you’re native american? You need to learn how to speak/write better English yourself.
      2) Why should the Chinese learn to speak English? Would you expect Americans to learn Chinese?

I’m sure most Indians(like myself) would find the photos utterly repulsive.
But the superior tone of this post and some of the Chinese commenters comes as a surprise.
Indians for example are thoroughly disgusted by the ‘omnivourous’ nature of Chinese cuisine. It’s not just disgusting…it’s positively dangerous to public health. Little wonder then that the black plague that devastated Europe a few centuries ago seems to indicate Chinese origin. http://nyti.ms/cCT0at (article in today’s NY Times).
Same with the more recent SARS epidemic (civet cats being eaten for meat in China)
So let’s admit that each of our cultures have their own peculiarities and ‘blind spots’ and show each other a bit more tolerance.

  • An Indian

Well Well.. A lot of things are being said about India. It would have been better if you had taken some time to upload pictures from Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Jaipur, Bangalor, Kashmir, Kerala.. and so on. The list is never ending. You people only want to show the bad side of India to the world.
Its their tradition of discarding the bodies after Death. Why should you have problems with that. When they themselves dont have. Nobody is asking u to take a swim in that river.
There are filthy places in China too. I have seen such places. U should take sometime and Do some R and R on your country too.
If they had Money like the Americans even India would have been Nice and Clean like The West.
There are countries worse than India like – Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, the African Continent ( Most Of It)

    • Vince

Dude sri lanka isnt that bad, dont know about Bangladesh and pakistan though, but i cant imagine that they would be that bad, bangladesh is in an area that is like a freaking magnet for natural disasters. Pakistan has a problem with terrorists and such, and i’ve got plenty of african friends its actually a pretty damn nice place to visit i’ve heard. India is beautiful too and all countries have some ugly sides so lets call it a stalemate and say that the whole world could do a bit of spring cleaning and aim for the betterment of humanity.

    • Vakeesan

      An Indian,

What is your definition of worst? What is bad in srilanka? We had ethnical war but we don’t have a place like varnasi which we call as tourist attraction. Our beaches are more cleaner than in india, Nuwara eliya is a hill resort and also we have sigiriya which is a famous tourist spot. Why do you guys always want to create enmity with your neighbours. Chill out dude.

    • Vakeesan

Why do you want to talk about srilanka when the topic is about india and varnasi and not about Srilanka

  • Jack

Tibetans set fire to their dead relatives, chop them up and feed them to vultures. Then leave their bones scattered all over the place.

    That’s pretty gross, too.

    • http://www.iy8.me Y8

      I can believe it.

    • Mark

That’s up in the mountains and in a country where the ground is frozen most of the year and wood is expensive seems like a good idea. I would love to have my remains eaten by vultures and then my bones scattered.

    • Mark

      Dear Jack,

To you from your point of view as you’re a child from your own (Western?) culture it might be pretty gross, but if you look a bit further you might see it’s actually a very sane thing to do.
The Tibetans make sure there are no remains at all from the corpses, isn’t that great?
(Especially compaired to what’s happening in India with the dead. ;-)
Or would you rather see them digg a hole in the ground to bury their deceased? Try digging a hole in the Himalayans, that’s tough soil!

      Mark,
      The Netherlands.
      Holland.

I am a foreigner working in Bangalore and has traveled extensively in India. Above pictures are sadness for India in particular, and for human beings in general because I have seen similar scenes in other countries.

There are better parts of India too.

  • cathy

i have neither been to china nor to india, but honestly, is it like this in china too?

    to people from India,
it is nothing uncommon for both China and Indian to have bright and black sides, so they are called underdeveloped countries. The most important thing for them is to go home and work hard to improve their countries. Those who curse India here under China’s names were from either Japan or someone from Taiwan island. They will sit back and laugh if they can see Indian and China fight each other and suffer from conflicts. Be smart, just forget them.

  • Jai Hind

    Dear people,
Do not laugh the apparent backwardness of India, because you do not know what is coming out of this seemingly “mess”, which is in fact the greatest and most ancient Green Initiatives in the world.

Without taking you to the point to show that all these are indeed environmentally friendly, and organic, and natural, and teeming with ancient culture and history essences, I shall enlighten thee the fact after the Middle East oil, India will be the next and last major source of petroleum of mankind.

We all know that petroleum is made from ancient animal organic sediments. Just look at how much such sediments in the river, and you will know this place will be the next Saudi Arabia, but even better because it is not desert!

    • xujin

      idiot
middle east has half of the worlds oil reserves.
      india doesnt have any
sorry but india will always be very poor and uncivilized

      • Appalled

For you to say something like that is indeed very ignorant. Grow up, look around you and base your judgments on facts and not petty pictures. I’m sure there is some thing that you practice that I could call uncivilized, ignorance would be part of it.

  • Trung Nguyen

This is only a tradition of a country, do not justice based on what you know. Do not give your self the right to justice other people and other country, look at your self in the mirror when you do it PLEASE.

that is just too damn filthy!!!

i would rather swim in pasig river that is full of garbage (and sometimes human feces but not human remains!!!) then to wade through that indian river even if it would only be my foot!

seeing those animals munching away on the corpse, i thought they were well fed then the humans but then i start to think what if the locals, in desperation, would resort to eating those corpse?! indian curry . yum. no offense i think india is a rich cultural country but this shlt …

  • lifeisprecious.

    Hi, I’m from singapore.
Firstly, i’m impressed with how the indians are able to view death as part of their life. They can accept the truth well. However, able to accept death is not the excuse to leave dead corpses around. It poses serious health and hygiene problems.

At the same time, a country’s success or failure is very much dependent on the leader (government). An able government can construct a heaven out of that country, while a corrupted government without foresight will lead the country to hell.

Both India and China are great civilizations with very rich cultures and histories. I’m very impressed with the economic success that was brought about over the last few decades.

The next step will be political and social reforms. Only through such reforms can the people benefit from the country’s success. I’m sure many of us here posting comments are educated, therefore we are literate and can analyze the situation with such a wide perspective. Likewise, if everybody in India and China are educated, with the proper moral values, attitudes and character molding, the undesired habits will naturally be kicked.

But all these takes time. So instead of criticizing, or feel disgusted, we should accept the fact that it’s only a matter of time before things can change for the better. Our forefathers who lived in the feudal age have gone through the same situation! If not for them, we will never be able to live such a comfortable life now.

    • passing chinese

10000% agree and a few words to posters here
India is a huge country and many of her people are still poor
just like china – both countries are having the same type problems and both are working on it

Some of those issues is related to poverty for sure – if they really have the money, they may do a better burial – ACTUALLY until we were indian we don’t actually know the reason why the corpse is in the river – that is a HUGE country with huge population and all kinds thing is happenning on a daily basis – MOST people in india is not doing that and MOST of them will feel disturbed looking at such image

They are every bit as human as us and they should be fully respected just like your brother.

stop making fun of them until you were sure that you have as perfect as a God – if you were in the same situation then you may look worse!

Please don’t generalize and don’t use racist words
One thing I don’t like about western media is their never ending appetite in making fun of others, being arrogant, they may write very professional in perfect english – but you can tell that the bullsh*t is there and people should learn the lesson and never copy them

Chinese and Indian are 2 of the oldest civilazation in the world
both shared similar type of history in the last 100 years
All chinese and indian should work together to build friendship
there will be misunderstandings for sure but as long we work on it we will make a huge portion of the population in the world safer and happier

It take a sincere heart and hard work to achieve all this
however I am very sure that we will be there
Because both culture are great culture and both are non-aggressive and friendly people

There will be up and downs when it involves politics
However – we will be there, we will see the day and the 2 great culture making HUGE contributions to the well-being of
      our world hand in hand

      • Richard Wang

I agree with what you said in principle. However,
A civilization as old as India’s still couldn’t provide basic and separate sanitary and burial facilities for its millions of citizens does not deserve my respect. One would think if the energy, manpower and material that went into the Taj Mahal went into a sewage system and funeral homes then things could be different. I am not looking at this with any cultural baggage, just straight on as a human being. Sometimes we can be too politically corret that we become afraid to speak our minds because we may appear to be racist. I am not racist but I think the government of India is despicable for letting this atrocity continue. The people of India deserve better. It is not tradition or culture or any of the other things. It is an ATROCITY no matter how you look at it. btw, I am Chinese Canadian, if this happened in my culture/country I would be the first to condemn it.

Shut up you stupid fucking chinks, america is so much better than china. police dont shoot you if you don’t raise your hands. FUCK OFF

    台湾是中国人民的救星。 中华民国万岁!

  • Kiran Pradhan

If you wanted to address the true “nature” of India, as a country, why would you choose to focus on the select areas in which abject poverty and homelessness run rampant? Not to be unrealistic, but it’s quite unfair to judge the merits of a country based solely on it’s ill-equipped infrastructure?

To make charges towards China, of which I assume you are a citizen, would be redundant and useless. However, I can safely say both countries are in a position, to which none can be held to a higher standard over the other.

    Just a thought.

  • Ashwin

As an Indian I are not proud what happens in Varanasi.I apologise for what you have seen above. I am certain things will change for the better. India has more than the Ganga to offer.

  • http://www.causalityofbeing.com Thomas

Whats with all the insults, cursing and aggression? Thats old and tired already. Theres plenty of testosterone and balls on the internet because everyone is worlds apart. Stop the negativity, hate and divisiveness. Have an educated debate. Obviously these people are comfortable with things that the rest of us aren’t. Get over it. Live your life and they will live theirs. Peace and blessings to everyone. Elevate to a higher consciousness.

    • White Man

Thomas, I can see it now.

The peace is coming, I am bracing myself in love. 2012. Kumbaya.

      What a revelation.

Thanks, I feel much better now with all the shit surrounding me.

  • Ben Dover

Finally! A place even more fucked up than China.
