Chinese Angry USA Donated More To Haiti Than Sichuan

From Tianya:

Haiti Earthquake, America donated 100 million USD. Sichuan Earthquake, America donated 500,000 USD

While watching the news this morning, America donated 100 million USD for the Haiti Earthquake, but when I just looked it up, do you know how much America donated during the Sichuan Earthquake? 500,000 USD!!!

Who is able to tell me why?!

Donating more or donating less I do not have a problem with, it is their money, but what I cannot see past is the detestable mouths of American slaves [Chinese people who praise America]!

Those people who flatter/flaunt American democracy, those people who at the time made posts explaining that America’s government doesn’t wantonly spend tax-payers’ money, how about explaining this!!!

Attached: Comparisons of donations from various countries around the world during China’s Wenchuan Earthquake and America’s Hurricane [Katrina].

Although this topic does not actually have much to do with us, but after seeing this I felt very upset and reposted it to let everyone see and compare themselves that while the Sichuan Wenchuan Earthquake was worse than America’s Hurricane [Katrina], whether in economic loss or loss of life, the size of the actions of international help is indeed another matter entirely (we don’t need to talk about America’s performance again!!!). (The data cuts-off at May 21, so if anything is incorrect or incomplete, everyone to criticize, add, or correct)

Please take a look at some representative cases:

1. Shameless bullshit countries:

一,Kuwait: China Earthquake – to this day no action —- America Hurricane 100 million USD (cash) + 400 million USD of oil for a total of 500 million!

二,Qatar: China Earthquake – to this day no action —- America Hurricane 100 million USD (cash);

三,[South] Korea: China Earthquake 1 million USD (funds and supplies) —- America Hurricane 30 million USD, as expected, completely like a slave! (bang zi people’s internet discussions I presume everyone has seen before, two words — shameless!!);

四,Australia: China Earthquake — to this day no action —- America Hurricane 7.6 million USD, with the latest news saying it is 1 million AUD, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s relationship with China is very good, but action was a little too slow and the sum too small, but their rescue workers are still good.

五,Bahrain: China Earthquake — to this day no action —- America Hurricane 5 million USD, a Middle Eastern oil-producing country, also another American running dog.

2. Sincerely helping countries

一,Saudi Arabia: China Earthquake 50 million USD + 10 million in supplies —- American Hurricane no action (255 million was donated by American oil companies in Saudi Arabia, not its government);

二, Russia: China Earthquake: Four shipments of supplies, two shipments already arrived, rescue workers that everyone saw, the new president begins his visit of China today, after all we our strategic allies —- American Hurricane no action;

三,Norway: China Earthquake 20 million NOK (about 3.9 million USD) —- America Hurricane 1.54 million in supplies;

四,Spain: China Earthquake 1 million EUR (about 1.5 million USD) Telefonica 10 million RMB —- America Hurricane no action;

五,Japan: China Earthquake 5 million USD, people right now are still collecting donations, on television even small stores still have collection boxes on their counters, they were the first to send rescue workers, who did their very best, and of course not to exclude other political factors —- America Hurricane 1 million USD (cash), generators;

六,England: 2 million GPB (one million GPB in aid and one million GPB in supplies) —- America Hurricane food aid no funds (This American ally, this time [for the earthquake] later eventually donated an amount that is a bit human/proper/appropriate);

七,Pakistan: Donated 300 tents, 500 blankets, 1000 plastic tarps, 3 tons of drinking water and 4 tons of medical supplies, etc. worth about 1 million USD —- America Hurricane, everyone in the world can guess;

八,North Korea: 100,000 USD, looking at how they have people starving to death every day, that was given by tightening their own belts, so even though there are conflicts, they are still our brothers!

Additional: With the relief supplies worth over 1.5 million EUR shipped to Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport that Italy’s government provided. According to reports, Italy’s relief supplies were split into three shipments, the first shipment were mostly tents. The second shipment is estimated to arrive in Chengdu on the 18th. Italy’s assistance was very low-key, and has a relatively good relationship with China, and only when compared with the small people [shameful people] in Germany (760,000 USD) and France (380,000 USD) do we realize that their help was actually not so little! For those similarly low-key areas that are not technically countries, I express my apologies, I already did my best in searching [gathering information].

Also: Vietnam 200,000 USD, not known if it has arrived, etc.

Mozambique 40,000 RMB (Note: Mozambique is the world’s poorest country, with a per capita daily income of 0.20 USD.)

Saudi Arabia 50 million USD cash and 10 million USD in supplies

Russia 4 million USD in supplies

America 500,000 USD cash (Note: During America’s 2005 Hurricane [Katrina], China donated 510,000 USD)

Japan 500 million JPY free funds and relief supplies.

Korea 1 million USD

England 1 million GPB

France 250,000 EUR earthquake relief

Germany 500,000 EUR

Poland: 100,000 USD

Norway: 20 million kroner (about 4 million USD)

Denmark 750,000 Danish krone (about 150,000 USD), over 1 million Danish krone (about 200,000 SD) of relief supplies

Spain 1 million EUR plus 7 tons of medical assistance

Belgium 650,000 EUR

Greece 200,000 EUR

Estonia 500,000 Estonian crowns (about 49,000 USD)

Vietnam 200,000 USD cash

UNHCR 50,000 USD cash

North Korea 100,000 USD

Canada, government will donate as much as the people donate

As long as there are people who are willing to believe, you can lie however you want. Just the NBA itself gave China over 500,000. Moreover, if China does not lack money, is it necessary for America to donate money? America still owes a bunch of debt to China.

Coming full circle, whose wallet did all the donated money go to?

狼爱上羊2008:

During the China Earthquake, America’s ZF initially only donated 100,000 USD.

ForrestRun:

We lack everything except money.

键盘上的流浪汉:

Haiti is geographically very close to America, and the feelings between the two peoples are even closer! This reason is very simple!

Whether a country is democratic or not democratic is not determined by looking at its foreign affairs, the most important is how the ZF treats the people that elects them to office!!!

America’s government publicly announces rescuing American citizens is their first priority!!!

While China’s government does not say anything publicly, in reality it still first saves those Chinese peacekeepers, hehe! Not the least bit magnanimous!

horn_z:

Whose wallet did all the money go into? In Haiti, the donated money has the United Nations peacekeeping force (there are also a lot of American military) to manage; In harmonious country [China], the accounting of the fart people’s donated money to this day is unclear, and the so-called Red Cross society in the end transferred all of the money to the ZF‘s coffers, for the ZF to go built it’s own large buildings, with not much actually reaching the disaster victims’ hands.

东城西就:

Corrupt officials who have fled the country is already 400 billion, the Communist Party’s car expenses and food expenses are 600 billion, so it is obvious that we do not lack money, so why should other people donate to you?

jichao77:

The LZ believes only donating to China’s Wenchuan and not donating to America’s Hurricane [Katrina] is correct, right? In American people’s eyes, then these countries would be bullshit countries too. You can express that you are unsatisfied/unhappy, but you should pay attention to being fair, impartial. Understand America’s Hurricane Katrina and how much China donated. Sino-American relations is not harmonious, this is already well-known. That both parties do not want to help each other has nothing to do with being shameless.

michaelych:

The whole world is laughing at China for being stupid.

[This is a lyric in a recent parody (on YouTube) of the "中国话" ["Chinese Language"] song by S.H.E. (on Youku or YouTube)]

menhoo:

For Wenchuan’s donations, even China’s citizens do not know where the money went; For Haiti donations, there are international organizations to supervise their implementation, even America’s donations are allocated by American troops who are there. If you were America, how would you donate?

China’s GDP is nearly the world’s number two, skyscrapers are everywhere in Beijing and Shanghai, the ZF has countless luxury cars, and its military strength has been called by military fans as the world’s number two; Haiti is so poor it is beyond poor. If you were America, how would you donate?

seasonchuan:

Those people who did not donate was because they know that even if they donate, it would be donating to those who do not need it!

With the image that Chinese people have in the world, what reason do they have to donate? Before criticizing others, first take a piss, and take a look at yourself first.

I see Japan amongst the sincerely helping countries~~
Apparently sincere or not sincere depends on the sum~
Apparently there is still sincerity between countries~

Does harmonious country [China] need donations?
Other people have an economic crisis, while we continue having double-digit growth.

宽带山日报:

This is what fenqing do when they have nothing better to do and aren’t working like they should.

山下智久:

The Sichuan Earthquake is what fart business of Shanghai people’s? It would be better if all the YP were shaken to death. You guys didn’t see what certain Sichuan YP were saying when Round Round Gate happened? Saying how the Shanghainese were the most stingy during the earthquake, that we donated the least…I really don’t know what to say.

brcb:

This guy has a problem, China has much more money than Haiti, often donating several millions or several tens of millions of USD to our African brothers. Others donating a bit more to poor countries is very normal/expected.

希PRADA:

Actually, if I had another chance,
I too would choose not to donate.
With this many government officials in harmonious country [China], had they all taken [embezzled] a little less, there would have been enough.

玄女:

Other people know that the Celestial Kingdom has plenty of money.
So why do you still want them to donate to you???
Haiti is truly really poor.
What a joke, LZ is a pig of a troublemaker.

圈格里:

Envying donating a bit more to a poor country! Probably ate too much fen ["shit", but also often a pun of "fenqing"].

梨花压海棠:

TG [the government] has taken plenty of the people’s money. I’ve decided that I will never donate a mao of money again because they’ve already taken enough. This fart citizen’s money still needs to be saved to pay next time’s taxes.

杰洛士:

Isn’t our international image that of a rich people, who only want face and not money? Other people know you Chinese people do not lack money, that a symbolic amount is enough.

The US government would have lost a lot of support if they’d given money to China and it had been embezzled or otherwise misused. The only way to make sure the money is spent properly would be to assign a branch of the US government to spend it directly or to closely monitor how it’s spent. The US military is doing this in Haiti but I hardly think the CPC would allow this.

They’ve also got the problem of refugees from Haiti to deal with, Haitians are basically like actual Africans, they learned nothing from their short time as a colony and they’ve gone back to their natural state like a pack of wild dogs. Their last President even sacrificed a baby in order to try and help his political career

    http://www.wehaitians.com/disturbing%20revelations%20of%20human%20sacrifice.html

America already has too many illegal Haitians living there and if they can’t improve the conditions there they could have a couple of million more. This aid is designed to keep the devil worshiping criminals in Haiti where they belong.

    • krdr

Hey, PP, you just made a few good points here.

Haiti is THE first independent country with black (African) majority. USA have long history of meddling in their affairs. Clinton and Bush also sent army on Haiti to maintain order.

      • Carlos

I can tell you know nothing about the history of Haiti. Meddling? Give me a break. How about the French and don’t forget Haiti has been Independent for a very, very long time and what about all the corrupt dictators, coup and leaders that have bled the country dry and put it in its current state that it is in.

What is the point of getting jealously upset and getting the jockstrap in a twist? It doesn’t matter if the United States donates more to Haiti then China.

Haiti is a strategic location close to the US mainland and they need to keep it from becoming a failed state and deal with the large humanitarian crisis.

China’s got over a trillion dollars in US treasury bonds and billions more in foreign reserves, sell some of that and help the earthquake victims and boost domestic consumption.

  • ralphrepo

LOL… China is so hung up on “face” that it has to be first in everything; even in the dollar amount of handouts? Far as I’m concerned, this article is from the “Bashed” in China, just trying to stir up more “Hey, but I’m the REAL victim here, hello…?” type of sentiment; to which I say, get a life.

Do something real like talk about the re-bar in Sichuan schools pre-2008 if you want to see real victims.

  • whichone

Fenqings in China, we have all underestimated how angry/shitty you are.

  • http://www.shanghaiist.com Elaine

Huh, well assuming that the difference between the China Red Cross and the government is the same as between the American Red Cross and the U.S. government, this is what actually went down:

US government donations to Sichuan: 50,000USD plus 85,000USD worth of supplies/relief/other aid.
American Red Cross to Sichuan: $10 million USD.

So… yeah, this guy’s stirring up shit. Glad to know the other netizens seem to think it’s just as tasteless.

    • http://www.shanghaiist.com Elaine

Oh yeah, and just checked up Australia’s donation: $4.5 million to Sichuan. Not that we need facts to get in the way with this guy’s logic.

Wish you would’ve stated that “A Chinese man” is angry rather than “Chinese angry.” It’s race baiting the way it’s phrased right now – generally, it seems like many Chinese have been incredibly supportive of this country most of them know nothing about.

  • http://www.chinasmack.com Joe

Haiti was always under the close influence of the United States, this is not the first time troops and material were sent to maintain order(for better or for worse), in fact Haiti was occupied by the US military for several decades during the early 20th century. The point is that Haiti is strategically important to the US by both proximity and the large numbers of Haitian Diasporas and immigrants in the US.

Honestly, who can say that China’s involvements in Haiti (donations and peacekeepers) are not politically motivated. Especially considering Haiti is one of Taiwan’s (ROC) few diplomatic allies that still remain (Taiwan donated 5 million to Haiti by the way).

  • Sam the truck driver

I’m on my way to Dubai and asked my host why they (Arabs) didn’t donate to the Sichuan earthquake. He thought for a moment and said:”I think it’s the religion and that we think Chinese are a very racist nation”.

Another thing that requires kind of twisted thinking is: Why should we help those Chinese, they are stealing our jobs, stealing our intellectual property etc. Tell you what, those people didn’t do any of that and were the victims of their own gov people too.

  • BigNoodle

China is one of the most economically powerful country in the world. Haiti is one of the poorest. if not THE poorest. so who needs money ??

  • LOLZ

This guy sounds petty but let’s not forget that foreign donations are in fact political. Diplomats do keep track of these things and will use these statistics to alter foreign policies in the future.

  • ChinaJim

I feel bad for the local people living in Haiti but I feel worse for all the lower and middle classes in American who will have to keep working more hours to pay for Haiti. Assuming they can still find a job that is. Then of course, the tens of thousands mabey hundreds of thousand of Haitians which will immigrate to the U.S. and straight into welfare and prisons. And a few extra work shifts for that. America has previously rebuilt Haiti 3 times, with all new hospitals, schools, roads, electrical grids….now we have to do it again. This time it wasn’t their fault if you exclude shotty building practises but how long before it reverts back to its normal state of death, desperation, and vodoo. The best thing for that place is to quit taking care of them so they will stop over breeding.

The Australian Red Cross received 9 million in donations from the Australian people for the earthquake in China as of May last year. With large federal and some state government donations, along with donations from the business community, I’m pretty sure Australia contributed a lot – regardless of its small population. As has been said, don’t let this get in the way of a good rant.

    What a fxcked up topic.
Be glad that there are donations/gifts. Of course it’s political.

But the thing is. Do you always compare what you get for your birthday with what other people get? Be gratefull.

People in Haiti have a less powerfull or let’s say no government to protect them. They need all the help.

I wasn’t aware that China was a third world country.

It is. You’re confused because the facade of development belies the third world mentality of its people.

      • Mike Fish

That comment could easily be said about a huge swathe of America as well… and it’s not just the black or brown part like PP suggests.

        • http://www.chinasmack.com/ Righteous American

You can certainly find third world like areas/mindsets in any western country to some degree. You can argue to what degree the American psyche resembles that of the Chinese if you like. You can also argue the similarities between an abacus and a computer while youre at it.

  • John Bacon

It’s so easy: Haiti is the poorest country in the world, while China has enough resources by itself. Look at the quick and effective reaction of Chinese Government after the earthquake and the one in Haiti.

Why some Chinese take everything that personal? Are you the center of the world? (oh yes, zhong guo, they are…)

  • momodonk

This story is inaccurate. I am from Australia and our government donated money and sent people and equipment and supplied tents to help as soon as the Sichuan earthquake happened. Many individuals also made donations including myself and my wife.

This is backed up by Michael above.

If one wants to get picky on this topic they might note that Australia with its ~ 22 million population donated 10 mill to Haiti and CHina with the worlds largest reserve of foreign currency only donated 1 million. Yes CHina has poor people but if it wants to be the worlds factory and become the largest economy in the world it should play fairer itself. That said there will always be politics involved in how much countries donate to other countries.

  • http://tracesofevil.blogspot.com/ Keir

Yeah, and have the Chinese done to help its on neighbours? There is no charity in this country- no Oxfam or Help the Aged. To do anything to help anyone is actively discouraged by the regime. Why the hell should the US give China another penny?- it’s already given enough through the intellectual property that China steals. Maybe the Chinese should get proxies to learn real history and find out what the US happened to do back in WWII on their behalf and ask how they’ve reciprocated since.

The explanation here in the USA seems to be that the technology to quickly donate a few dollars has made all the difference. Millions of people have cell phones, and many have taken a minute to send in a small donation.

Me? I donated what I could to disaster relief in Sichuan, as I did with Hurricane Katrina, and the 2004 tsunami. Location of people in need does not determine worthiness of donations. I can’t do much for Haiti right now. That hurts my heart.

  • bb

    Heres a story…

    There were 2 families,
    the Chin and the Hait

The Chin’s were rich and lives in a mansion,
The Haitians were poor and lives in a shack.

Then comes the earthquake devastating the 2 families…

The shack that the Hait’s lived in crumbles because it was a broken down shack.

The mansion also crumbled, but that was because the Chin’s wanted to cut cost and used shit materials when they built their mansion.

The neighbors saw what happened so they pitched in and donated to the Heit’s,
Some neighbors felt bad that no one donated to the Chin’s so they pitched in and donated to the Chin’s too.

The head of the Heit’s family took the donated money and used it to rebuild their shack and buy food for the family. All the Heit’s were very grateful.

The head of the Chin’s family took the donated money and bought himself a new Mercedes and dined out at the finest restaurant in town. The rest of the Chin’s family bitched and grumbled that no one donated to them.

The U.S. donated far, far more than this post claims. Kind of insulting actually, that someone would claim this when here in the U.S. we were all scrambling to donate in the aftermath of the Sichuan Earthquake. Even people that normally criticize China were donating. Little old, conservative, ass-backwards Cincinnati, Ohio, donated $48,000 (http://gccerf.blogspot.com/) and that is just one minor city in one state.

Just the local Chinese school in my area collected several 10′s of thousands of dollars. Claims like in this post annoy me because it takes the significant contributions of people like myself (who gave a lot to the Sichuan Earthquake) and throws it back in our faces. I know China has its idiots but why does Chinasmack give them a forum to spread their rather transparent lies?

I love the way the only difference between the “1. Shameless bullshit countries:” and the “2. Sincerely helping countries” is that in one group people gave money to the USA and not China, and the other (mostly) to China but not the USA.

At least both the Chinese and the Americans are both in harmony in terms of double standards…

  • Beholder

Well, by the same token I would like to condemn China for donating NOTHING during the Irish Potato Famine during the 1840s.

Even the Choctaw Indians donated $710: if people so impoverished could donate so much, where was China?

SHAME on China! YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND IRELAND!

    etc etc

  • Chinglish

thats really a silly post.the original author is very chinese.sorry,im feeling dizzy…

There are huge differences between the situation in Haiti and Sichuan: the amount of people who died or misplaced in Port Au Prince, the capitol of the country, is a large segment of that country’s population; and the capitol city was destroyed and destitute. This is similar to Beijing being destroyed, not Sichuan. The US has a long relationship with Haiti that hasn’t been positive. The US *must* make a large contribution. And finally, the capacity of China to provide for Sichuan, with China’s infrastructure, is vastly immense compared to Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the world. I think this analysis -if it can be called that- is narrow, lacks compassion, and to a degree, selfish.

  • wesinthewest

As an American living in China I as extremely impressed with the way the Chinese government mobilized so quickly to help save so many lives during the Sichuan Earthquake. I only wished that my own government could have worked as quick and efficient during America’s own natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina.
China is no longer a 3rd world country. It is a country of modern cities with modern facilities and an incredible army well equipped to handle just about any kind of natural emergency or disaster within and beyond it’s own borders.
Unfortunately Haiti is not China. And as poor as parts of China still are particularly in the areas outside of the main cities, the general living conditions of the every day Haitian iare pretty much on the poverty level which is not the case in China today.

Haiti does not have a powerful army or for that matter the type of government that could react the way China’s own government did during the Sichuan earthquake here last year. And the more images one sees of the “national” disaster this country is undergoing the more one realizes how truly impoverished and poor the country of Haiti is. I am sure 50 years ago China wold not have been able to react the way it did, as it did now during the Sichuan earthquake. So the Chinese people should feel very proud of their country today about the modernization of their country today which is a product of the hard work of it’s own people.

I am not a fan all the time of my own government but in America’s defense I would have to say that whenever there is some kind of natural disaster or major human tragedy, the government or people in the private sector of America (charities…..) always make some kind of concerted effort to help out.

I don’t think most people in America nor does the American government view China on the same level as Haiti. I know for myself that I don’t view China as a country of helpless poor people. And I am assuming that is why so little money was given to China, because a country which can stage an incredible event such as the 2009 Olympic Games isn’t really not short on money or in need of money.

Once again this is not the case for Haiti. This is truly a struggling third world country already in economic dept with “0″ resources to help it’s own people at a time like this.

My own question though would be to play the devil’s advocate. How much money has China donated to Haiti during this time of crisis for Haiti ? I don’t know all of the facts like the well informed writer of this essay and even if little money has been donated, I know China was one of the first countries to send a team of rescue people to help out. I would like to see someone write an article about about these special people from China who are volunteering to help out in Haiti . One of the photos that was first circulated in the news shows a Chinese rescue team getting read to go to Haiti. Now THAT’s a great positive story !

But I would like to commend the creators of thist website for all of the great and interesting stories I have read about China since finding your website accidentally last month. For someone who can’t read Chinese this has been a valuable and insightful way of getting to know what’s really going on in China.

Keep up the good work ! And congratulations to the author of this article for having the courage to speak his mind publicly. Regardless of whether one thinks he is right or wrong in saying what he did, the fact that he did speak out is what’s important in a modern country such as China.

    • Mike

I am alway interested in reading your comments. While I do believe you are slanted in your statements toward China more than the United States you try to justify them by blaming the USA for flaws of other peoples and their problems. You make me ashamed to call you American. You have no honor. Not as Chinese or American. No honor at all.

    • Amy (aka Honda Mikazuki & Youko)

Nup don’t think you are truly American.

  • mechanized

Just throwing this one out there…..

What about Hurricane Katrina survivors who rebuilt their homes with toxic Chinese drywall. These people got screwed over twice!

    • http://cnreviews.com Kai

Yeah, but the question is by whom.

      • mechanized

        its a conspiracy!

      • http://www.chinasmack.com/ Righteous American

First by themselves and then an added insult to injury by the Chinese who manufactured and sold toxic drywall.

        • http://cnreviews.com Kai

First, I wouldn’t say they got screwed over by themselves, unless you say its their fault for living in the path of a hurricane.

Second, I wouldn’t be so quick to say they were screwed by the Chinese either.

          http://www.chinalawblog.com/2009/10/chinese_drywall_cases_makes_us.html

The problem is that US distributors purchased and then imported the domestic quality Chinese drywall rather than much better quality drywall made for the export market. If US distributors would have all purchased the good export stuff there would not be any problems at all.

So why blame the Chinese? They certainly have the right to made lower quality less expensive product for their local consumption. Investigative reporters should be focusing on why US drywall distributors chose to purchase the lower quality Chinese domestic product rather than purchase export quality product. The answer will certainly turn out to be – they saved money by buying junk Chinese domestic board. Investigative reporters should be focusing on why builders actually used this nasty smelly stuff rather than rejecting it.

What about the US builder’s quality control systems? Surely products used in the construction of homes have to be evaluated prior to use when not purchased from a well known US manufacturer and not approved/ certified by well known quality control bodies like UL, ISO, and ASTM? Again, where were our quality control systems?

There are good Chinese manufacturers and there are bad Chinese manufacturers. There are Chinese manufacturers that manufacture to spec and there are Chinese manufacturers that do not manufacture to spec. And there are American companies that get bad product from China because they do not know how to get good product from China or because they simply do not care whether they get good products or not. And there are American companies that get bad product from China even though they did pretty much everything one can do to prevent getting bad product.

Unless one has had really close involvement with what transpired between the Western companies and the Chinese companies involved in the drywall mess, I do not see how one can confidently assess blame either way between the Chinese and the Western companies. I am not speaking to legal responsibility here, I am talking about blame. My experience in these situations is that most of the time, there is plenty of blame to go around.

it’s really funny to see this kinda of reaction… but here is my Question just i was going some chinese website and also i found how chinese peoples offend other

    Weak people = weak country?

A cursory glance at the United Nations’ Human Development Index suggests that global influence does not always go hand-in-hand with socio-economic development. In the UN’s 2009 report, Norway, that long-term adversary of the US, is ranked #1, with other giants Iceland, Luxembourg and Barbados also being classified in the top category of “very high human development” (ranked #3, #11 and #37 respectively). The US is 13th, but few would disagree that it remains the most powerful country in the world. Meanwhile China is ranked 92nd……can we honestly say to ourselves that there are 91 other countries in the world that have a greater influence on global politics than China? (And do i dare to mention that Hong Kong is ranked separately at number 24? Yes, i do).

The global influence of a country is determined less by the standard of living enjoyed by its citizens and more by its government’s wealth and power. Although a government represents its citizens, the two are very different entities, and this is no more the case than in China. China’s government is in charge of a huge and rapidly-growing economy & is owed huge sums of money by various countries including the US. We can’t say the same about the average person on the streets of China. Thus China can be hugely influential on the world stage despite the relative poverty of much of its people.

    • Miike

I agree that the ranking is fluked. China has proved to be the “sleeping giant” of the 60′s that has indeed awaken and become a major player in world politics. #94 is a insult and who ever rated it is asleep. China is advanceing quickly into the 21 century. Those who do not believe should wait in fear.

I for one was impressed with the comments below the article. I thought the netizens who responded to the LZ were both inciteful and intelligent– really put the LZ in his/her place.

WTF China!? Does it realli matter even if its true?

  • FYIADragoon

Just another FQ kiddies being FQ’s article. Nothing to see here people, move along.

  • Professor Sillypants

Really?! I thought the Chinese would be proud that they handled the earthquake themselves. There was a different level of devastation in Haiti too. Furthermore, China is a 2nd world country.

You can’t have it both ways: wanting people to completely acknowledge your independence AND accept large donations. This is a face issue.

It sickens me that people would complain about this point, especially after the CCP did everything to keep foreigners out, block them from doing anything really meaningful, and publicize all the great work that THEY were doing.

    Get over yourselves.

  • Miike

Someone research and find out how fast aid offered by the United States was refused, rejected, dismissed, and said was not needed. I did for 3 hours and the United States was not the only country refused. The internet was alive within hours with rejections and venonous hateful comments. The American Red Cross gave through the international organization to help with supplies and money. The truth is not popular about this terrible Earthquake!

  • VeerLeft

Pusan Playa, You’ve stepped way over the line.
You refer to the all the negative KKK propoganda in known circulation. In a court of law, this would be akin to using planted evidence to make your case. BLACKS didn’t just arrive in North America like KOREANS did. They were dragged there LONG before you even knew the place existed. I could get into details about the ‘gifts’ that Americans gave African who were kidnapped and forced into slavery, but this would fall on deaf ears in this forum which seems to be rife with people who are just trying to vent their personal frustrations.
I believe that you are a witty and intelligent poster but that doesn’t make you a decent human.
    Now vent away…

  • too yellow

Does China really wants that? I mean there are 11000 US troops on the ground in Haiti, controlling their airport telling who can come in, who can not. They are protically running that country right now… Imagine if the same thing would happen in Sichuan, there would be a lot more to get angry about for these FQs. Get someone’s massive donation is double edged sword, but if you gov’t can even function like Haiti there aren’t a lot of choices.

    • ralphrepo

China, unlike Haiti, was certainly not administratively dysfunctional after the Sichuan quake. It has over six million men and women under arms (inclusive of all military and local uniformed forces), along with it being one of the richest countries in the world. It has its own airlift capability in addition to a huge reserve of medical, food and potable water resources.

You’re comparing it to a spit of half an island which is already widely acknowledged to be the poorest nation of the western hemisphere. Haiti was barely functioning even under “normal” circumstance, requiring United Nations Peacekeepers (of which ~ 130 are Chinese, BTW) assistance of their paltry Haitian National Police since mid 2004. It has no military to speak of (disbanded since 1994), zero resource reserves and had been a routine recipient of emergency international food and medical aid even before this tragic earthquake.

So frankly, your comparison of the reactions, needs and transposition of one’s response to the other, is patently ridiculous and you know it. The only way the US would have sent in thousands of troops to China to keep order (like your supposition suggests) was if China was similar to Haiti in all respects; it clearly isn’t.

If you choose to say something anti-American, at least come up with a scenario that is functionally realistic and intellectually plausible. Otherwise, you’re just America Bashing, which is what I suspect to be the primary motivation and purpose behind your post.

      • too yellow

It’s not America bashing, just saying the perspective scenarios, as American has single handed placed itself into the leading role in Haiti, while the UN mission there was led by Brazil. After all, Haiti fall well within the boundaries of Monroe doctrine and US have previous histories of intervening in Haiti. Also it seem US forces is in it for the long haul at least from this FP article. (http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2010/01/19/how_to_help_haiti_rebuild) This make any action there seem suspect, even if the intention are benevolent.

I used the example because of its implausibly, as US troops in China is not needed, and even the first ever US military plane landed in China (well except for the 2001 incident) was played down by the media. Again the original poster is use Aid as measurement of friendship, I’m use here pointing out by accepting lots of Aid you have to also cede control of deliver them. Just dial back 65 years, and you’ll see the same thing in China. US troop and far more British are in China providing security in aftermath of WWII, chaos of civil war and the annual floods that decimate the part of China I came from. At the time, my grandma does enjoy the daily ration of canned beans and butter (of all things) from the local mission by she has to sing hymns to get it though. Perhaps this is a better comparison and relate to China as well.

      • too yellow

Also obama is using it to show a good neighbor policy. I think they have a segment on it from the daily show yesterday. The point here is, government donation is always tied to politics. NGOs is a little better at it, though many have its agendas religious or secular. Also again, the original poster is using aid to measure friendship, however that’s not how aid works.

    • Professor Sillypants

      Exactly!!!!! China is a kick-ass self-sufficient country!

      • Tins of sardines

        Professor Sillypants,

I see some serious logical flaws and rational anomalies in your post.

        • Professor Sillypants

Well then don’t be shy! Let me know what’s wrong, so I can address each point. You can see where I’m coming from better that way.

          Cheers,
          Sillypants

  • http://Chinasmack.com Mr Michael

The US is very close to Haiti and needs to prevent the flood of refugees using dangerous small boats that might try to get to the US.

    Many die every year.

  • banosd

America has different leadership now then it had during the Sichuan Earthquake and the Indian Ocean Tsunami. Obama is not afraid to overspend!

    • Mike

OBAMA is an idiot who wants to destroy the USA and make it a socialist state.

      • ralphrepo

What’s wrong with that? We’re halfway there already. But too many corporations like HMO’s don’t want their profitable sandbox taken away. They’re simply making too much money with it to give it back to the American people. If they had their way, they would privatize all schools; fire, police, sanitation and water services too. Then one will really appreciate living in a Socialism free country.

      • Mike Fish

Yeah that would be bad because the Social-Democracies in Scandanavia have terrible health care, bland society, and ugly people…. wait… strike that, reverse it… they actually have excellent health care, awesome beer and party-life, and some the hottest people in the world. Where as most of the “capitalist” countries that fear socialism are rife with obsesity and crime. I’m just sayin.

        • http://i49.tinypic.com/2cek3l.jpg PUSAN PLAYA

If America was serious about becoming another Sweden they’d need to do something about their crime rate and social problems. They’d have to send all the blacks back to Africa and probably all the Mexicans too (if they sent them back to Mexico they’d probably just come back again).

In reality though Scandinavia and the rest of Europe is becoming another America, not the other way around. The Muslim population is exploding (sometimes literally) and with it the rate of crime and social problems. They mostly put up with this because just like the Americans suffering at the hands of blacks, they’re too terrified of being called racists to save their country.

          • dilladonuts

            LOL WHAT A DOUCHE

Somehow this boy ” pusan playa ” has managed to convince himself that America belongs to a group of whiteys. Look at how easily he bows down to the whites as a superior figure.

Shameless and embarassing… He must of gotten picked on alot and has various forms of social disorders givin that he hates all ethnicities but loves the white man.

poor you, really. You can play tough on the internet all day, but we all know its mainly a defense mechanisms for your own insecurites.

            have a great day

          • Mike Fish

The tired cliche that Muslims are this terrible intolerant force needs to be scrutinized a bit more if you wanna seem like you have a brain. Just because the bullshit regarding the Mohamed cartoons was “blown up” does not mean that stuff is a serious threat to the fabric of civilization in Scandanavia. Other than what you read in the Economist(the smart man’s Newsweek?) what do you really know about either Scandanavia or the Muslim world? Your trite cliches suggest you’ve never been there and have never really talked people from there. Your rants are getting boring and are making you seem like any other disgruntled Cali-Korean with an inferiority complex and no other way to argue about what’s going on than to spout cliches and regurgitate stereotypes because it’s easy and safe.

      • Professor Sillypants

Only if that were true would I like him. I don’t like him for various reasons. Therefore…
