Foxconn “Suicides” & “Secrets”, Chinese Netizen Reactions

A Foxconn exhibition booth.

This morning, a 11th jumping occurred. Over the past week, Mileiux and I translated the below collection of Chinese netizen reactions to the recent news of Foxconn suicides, a motivational message to Foxconn employees by a man without arms, and an internet post by a person who claims to know the “dark secrets” behind the “suicides”. — Fauna

From Netease:

Jump #10 Occurred at Foxconn this Morning, 21 Year Old Worker Passed Away

Summary: Around 4am on the 21st, a 21-year-old male Foxconn employee suicide jumped from the dorms, dying from his grievous injuries. This is Foxconn’s 10th suicide jumping incident to happen so far in 2010.

Once again proving a psychological theory, that successive individual behavior can influence the behaviors of the group. My respects to the dead.

网易广西网友:

Those who suicide jump are stupid X. If worst comes to worst just change your [work] environment/surroundings, there’s always hope as long as you’re still alive!

网易广东佛山南海网友:

This is suicide jumping, not diving, why [do they] not cherish their lives? If [they're] not even afraid of dying, why are they afraid of not being able to solve their problems?

网易北京网友:

First, based on statistics, China’s suicide rate is 20 for every 100,000. Global average suicide rate is 10 for every 100,000, but the current Foxconn suicide rate is 1 for every 100,000. Consequently, from a statistical point of view, this is not abnormal. Next, Foxconn’s problem is the same problem as ours, confusion caused by the disparity between a person’s idealism and reality. But we have not committed suicide because we still have society’s support, we still have relatives that can understand when we confide in them and support us. However, Foxconn [employees] are largely single and from the countryside, with no relatives at their side, no good friends, no effective means of support through confiding in society. As for Foxconn’s wages, they are not as bad as some have claimed. Foxconn’s problem is just the result of employees exhibiting emotional problems and not having support from society, in addition to an uncertainty in their future life. Therefore, it’s easy to go to the extreme. I am a psychology student. On my honor, not wu mao.

网易吉林长春网 友:

I also want to die. But I want to leave something to my parents before dying. If someone is willing to provide 200,000 [RMB], I am willing to anything for this [before dying so it can be left to parents].

网易河北邯郸网 友:

Foxconn for sure beats and scolds their employees, a netizen already exposed the true facts. Stupid cunt psychologists still trying to analyze, lamentable, are they unable to get in touch with reality? Idiots.

网易河北石家庄网友:

Why not resign and find a better paying job, why not report to the police, why do the families all accept reconciliation/adjustments?
Because Foxconn’s wage is pretty good for that area,
Emotional problems, societal problems obviously cannot be reported to the police,
[it has] nothing to do with Foxconn, so of course family members accept the adjustments/reconciliations.

网易广东东莞网友:

Compared to China’s coal mines, chengguan beating people, the death of these few people is relatively insignificant, so how much should the country compensate [them]? It is just that they are Fortune 500, that “the tall tree catches the wind” [those at the top will be targeted]! Since you say their company is bad, you can quit right? Just resign and leave. Is leaping from a building going to solve your problem? Only 21-years-old, you guys are too irresponsible to the hardworking parents who raised you!!

网易广东广州网 友:

May I ask the high officials for Shenzhen, if it were your children who were jumping from buildings, would you not use your power to investigate?? Give the people lasting peace and stability!! Please investigate the truth for the victims, the victims’ family, and for the masses!

网易山东济南网友:

A while ago, a veteran of the Foxconn factory in Kunshan said that just barely two years in, several people had died! It’s just that they were covered up! However, now the people’s anger has been aroused and the government needs some measures. Only this way will lives not be ignored! Only this way can there be social fairness!

From Netease:

Shenzhen armless man uses feet to “tell Foxconn brothers and sisters a message”

May 19th, 12 o’clock noon. An astonishing sight in front of the pedestrian overpass at Shenzhen Foxconn’s southern entrance: an armless, optimistic man from Shandong province used his feet to write banners of encouragement to Foxconn employees, urging them those employees under stress to not rashly commit suicide by jumping off buildings. The heartfelt message written on the banner is “A gift: Foxconn brothers and sisters, life is priceless, filial piety is a must, man is never without a path, harmony depends on oneself”.

As a result of the man’s actions, many Foxconn employees began to gather around him as they got off work, quite a few people supported and admired his actions, and one by one went up to request banners of encouragement.

According to the man’s account, his severe injuries were caused a few years ago by a natural gas explosion while he was a chef in Beijing. Only after many surgeries was he able to pick up the pieces of his life but was also deeply aware that it wasn’t easy for his parents to raise him, filial piety was a must, and therefore, he began to practice “foot calligraphy” with much difficulty in order to share his parents’ burdens. His actions not only gave encouragement to the entire nation but also paid off the enormous medical bills that were owed. After seeing Foxconn’s “nine successive jumps” [i.e. nine people jumping] during the past few days, [he] was very pained. Considering that they still had four healthy limbs, they should be even more aware of the responsibility to filial piety and to society and hoped they won’t do any more foolish things and believe in never giving up hope.

From Mop:

I am a current employee in Foxconn’s logistics department, let me tell you the true dark secret behind the suicide jumps!

I am a current employee for Foxconn ["赴死扛" sounds similar to "富士康" (Foxconn) but also means "to die"], in the logistics department, which is relatively more free compared to being in the factories, and have been at F-M [Foxconn, this netizen thinks it is spelled "Foxxcom"] for over three years. Here, I do not want to talk about how tough the work is inside, I just want to share what I know.

I can take responsibility for everything I say: It looks like there are actually quite a lot of people who really believe these people all jumped to commit suicide?? According to what I personally know, amongst the dead there are a number who were beaten to death by security guards (the security guards I am talking about are not those who watch the gates, but our FOXXCOM (I know it is misspelled) internal [security guards]): One of them (I won’t say the name), because of youth, was for stealing one of the company’s electronics, and was beaten to death by the security guards and then thrown off the building. This victim had a hole on the left part of his chest, which was pierced through his ribs by the security guards with a metal pipe.

I just want to say one thing here, if Old Guo’s [Guo Taiming aka Terry Guo, the head of Foxconn] assistant wants to see Shenzhen’s “First Brother” (everyone should know what “First Brother” means [the boss/leader/top official of Shenzhen]), just a single phone call and Shenzhen’s “First Brother” rushes over, because the tax revenue and economy that F**M [Foxconn] brings to Shenzhen needs no mention. Every year, our public servant’s big big red envelope cannot be lacking. Just the monthly wages at the factory at the Longhua area alone are several billion. There are some things that our department knows. They will weigh the pros and cons, but could Fortune 500 FOXXCOM be closed down for several lowly people of our level? Simply impossible! Finally, let me summarize with one thing that is not the least bit exaggerated: At F**M [Foxconn], even if they dismembered you and say it was a suicide, then it was a suicide!!

This post, posted May 21st, now has over 102 pages of comments and replies. Is it real? Who knows.

So jump, the more people that jump, the better.

  1. Once again proving a psychological theory, that successive individual behavior can influence the behaviors of the group. My respects to the dead.

That is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever read. What’s even worse is that in the west we actually buy products from these kind of factories.

    • I’m having a hard time guessing why you think it is the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever read.

Also, most of the time, it is because there is demand in the West that these kind of factories come into existence, rather than the other way around. Disturbing maybe, but true.

      • He’s implying that 1 guy committed suicide so everyone else thought it would be a good idea too.

        • I think you’re misreading it. He’s saying what’s happening at Foxconn is evidence for the validity of a theory. That theory is that if you get a string of individuals (not one individual) doing something, it can influence what the larger group of people do. This is true. You get one person wearing some type of shoe, another follows, and soon more and more people follow suit. Naturally, suicide and fashion are different, but then we can discuss lemming theory and copy-cats. Being aware that people like you, going through similar things as you, are choosing to do one thing may indeed affect your proclivity to do the same thing. I think that’s all he’s saying, which doesn’t sound really ridiculous to me but kinda obvious.

        • It’s a theory that has quite a bit of evidence already. The week of Marylin Monroe’s suicide, the suicide rate jumped. In “The Tipping Point” the author tells the story of islands in Micronesia in the South Pacific. Suicides were very rare among teenagers there, but after one publicized suicide, the rate skyrocketed. It became kind of a fad.

People have a hard time making sense out of their world, and their constantly looking at their surroundings for clues. Things that happen, including things reported in the media, influence people.

      • “Also, most of the time, it is because there is demand in the West that these kind of factories come into existence, rather than the other way around. Disturbing maybe, but true.”

It’s all whitey’s fault, got ya

        • Yo china-hater,
wtf are you doing on the website anyway? got nothing better to do?

          • kawaii

i am a grandfather of a chinese girl…i can love china,,but also express an opinion and so should anyone be able to express an opinion…your attitude shows lack of compassion in an international solidarity process…the workers whether they jumped or whatever deserve everyone’s compassion…and yes companies in america and consumers worldwide are complicit…

        • It’s a little disingenuous to say that the bad conditions in factories is caused by people in the west wanting cheaper goods more than by the factory bosses who actively go out and create these poor living conditions.

Kai, China is now trying to focus more on manufacturing goods for domestic consumption, do you think conditions in these factories will now be significantly better?

        • Shouldn’t you be getting ready to invade the North? I read that little midget issued some kind of rare order to his people. I hope you’re not expecting the US troops to do the dirty work for you.

  2. Power of money. Western companies still get their stuff made by this company.

But to think that Foxxcon is the only factory where this happens in all of China can’t be right. People know about foxconn, but there are so many smaller companies out there where people must commit suicide too because of the conditons. Like the poster said, they hide everything they can.

  3. More interesting here is not the posts about suicides, but the posts about the “truth” that it’s not suicide. It’s plausible, I mean, I would imagine after a few suicides if it was really suicide there would be proof (ie I’m sure there are crazy amounts of CCTV footage for IP protection) to counter the extremely serious accusation.

  4. Praise the motherland, we run the beautiful and glorius factory, and these the ungrateful employee want to commit the suicide? How dare they? Why would anyone want to commit the suicide if they have such a wonderful job that our great China government provide for them?

If they have been beaten, then they must deserve it, justice was done! These bad employees misbehaved, and they get beaten, it is what they deserved!

    • brother wang.
wtf? i understand that in the chinese constitution all chinese citizens are guaranteed work. so for you this is an additional step of piety yes? the ruler is like the father no?
      where is self expression?
the modern communist government which has a love hate relationship with kong zi the grandfather of one side of chinese social values. of late they have been destroying the work of generations past, the work of the country’s ancestors, where is the piety? destroying ancient architecture is the same symptom of China’s awkward quest for what they label modernism, as the suicides which result from these factory cities.

SHIZIT the deaths of these brothers and sisters are a result of the alienation caused by capitalism which is spurred by the neoliberal policies of your glorious government… yeah those ones which deng claimed in 1992 we couldnt debate.

在说 are these jobs provided by the chinese government? F no! the company is owned by taiwanese and makes consumer goods for americans who have developed their economy to the neoliberal dream of exporting assembly jobs of internally developed goods. china’s government provided these jobs only inso far as some beurocrates thought the revenues would be good for their own personal and local capitalist development

look at the enviroment before critiqueing the actions of individuals. do not hold the position of power against victims, but rather understand their plight to help fulfill what they lack so that in the future such needless suffering can end.
      \
this is my 五毛 for you uncle

  5. The suicide rate in China is about 14 per 100,000 according to Wiki. Foxxcons rate seems much lower. Why is it so low in Foxxcon? And what is the rate in other factories?

ANother points, there is a labor shortage in Southern China. Yes, a shortage! Any worker will find easily a similar paid job. Factories have problems to find workers. Anybody that works with factories in that area will confirm that!

  6. I believe the Foxcum employee’s account – it makes sense and it’s something more than likely to happen in China.

  7. It sad to read of this.

  8. If their suicide rate is lower than society at large, then we should study the company and find out what is keeping their employees so happy and not prone to suicide.

I’ve heard that Chinese women peasant farmers have a high suicide rate and that’s what brings the national average to as high as it is.

    • You misread that. When the average suicide rate is 10 or 14 per 100k (didn’t check whether it is true), that does not mean that in a 100k ppl company 10 or 14 have to jump off dorms every year. This would be the same as if you imply that when 1million people travel by train, 100-140 have to throw themselves before or out of trains every year.

      a^2

      • >>When the average suicide rate is 10 or 14 per 100k (didn’t check whether it is true), that does not mean that in a 100k ppl company 10 or 14 have to jump off dorms every year. <<

So what does it mean? I think it means exactly that.

    • no one is including a comparision of student suicides, or age catagorized suicides.
they story here is not suicide percentage, those a chinese netizen did bring it up. the story is that young chinese from the contryside are not the 工人 they are expected to be. does this mean they dont follow social pressures as well as their CR raised parents? does this mean that china might have to diversify? who the F knows, but its something major for china’s develoment. who would have thunk that chinese persons would want an individualy fulfilling life of their own?

  9. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/asia_pacific/10151626.stm

Seriously who wouldn’t be suicidal if your employee thought stuff like that would improve conditions. How about shorter working hours and higher pay?

  10. Id guess that the people who were not beaten to death, were
about to be beaten… and given the option to commit
suicide instead. (or knew the beating was coming, and chose
    suicide instead)

Chinese would be better to return to their roots, and get good
at Kungfu, band together, and protected each other.

If some company thug tried to beat me, he would be
    crippled in an instant.

  11. It’s a shame, no-one can truly get into the mind of the depressed or the suicidal: you’re entirely alone in there and at the mercy of our own emotions.

What’s interesting is that the only products that are talked about as being produced by Foxconn are iPhones from the Evil Imperialist USA…

…of course, it doesn’t suit their agenda to mention that many Japanese and Chinese products are produced there as well.

    • They mention only the iPhone coz they hope it will effect Apple badly, which then has to crush the iPhone price to a fraction of what it is now, so then they can finally buy one cheap.

    • Welcome to a communist dictatorship with a pretty face. They are just as bad as North Korea, and in many worse, because they actually try to hide the fact that they are backwards totalitarian dictatorship.

  12. 富士康第15跳啦~

    可恶的台巴子!!!

  13. Merciful Buddha! Virgin Mary!

    Huh?

  14. Do you actually have no sympathy for the people in that position. They get paid shit. They don’t even have enough money for food.

  15. I like the effort but was not amused

  16. I don’t give a shit about your feet, but how about we force you to work in one of these factories and see how long you last.

  17. That may have been relevant to some of the suicide cases or instances of employee mistreatment/abuse but I’m not so sure that’s the main avenue of consideration for all these suicides anymore.

I think the statistical explanation (that the number of suicides is not statistically abnormal for the amount of people Foxconn employs) is worth entertaining, but not yet worth accepting. Why? Because, quite frankly, some of these deaths definitely had suspicious circumstances involved. Hell, I’d be surprised if there weren’t bullies in the organization generally making things miserable for employees and possibly taking things too far.

However, while there are a lot of things to be concerned with (that are coming to light for many who weren’t already aware of them) here, I don’t yet see a single “reason” or “cause” for all of these deaths or attempted suicides.

  18. you translate it!

    giving you a WMD!

    get it wumaodang!

  19. I also don’t buy the statistical analysis the one guy posted. After all, it may only be 1 suicide in 100,000, but all of them happened in (apparently) the same way (jumping) and in the same place. I’d like to know how many of China’s 20 per 100,000 happened in exactly the same place in exactly the same way.

  20. Well, that guy clearly does not understand statistics. I’m pretty sure that 20 out of 100,000 Chinese people are not dying of suicide in that time period. Were that the case, I’d be shoving dead bodies out of my way on my trip to work every day.

  21. Allow me to restate. Suicide rate is calculated as 20 out of 100,000 deaths. How many deaths have there been among Foxconn employees during the duration of these suicides? My guess not that many. It’s hard to run a company when all your workers are dead.

  22. Are you guys so stuck to your computers that you can’t feel any emotion over some armless guy trying to encourage others to make the best of what their parents (or God or fate or whatever) gave them?

He feels compelled to use his unique life experience at persistence to encourage other people, why should he be teased about it? Even sarcasm at his expense is pretty tasteless. Why not go chew on some cardboard baozi, guys?

As for not amused, does he have to do a spinning headstand or something? Or beat you at a round of wolfenstein?

  23. I am saying that the Foxxcon suicide rate looks below average.

Do you have figures for other companies? I guess not.

Are the suicides work related? I don’t know, maybe some are. But keep in mind that Shenzhen area has a large labor shortage and factories have problems to find enough workers. A worker can easily find a new factory in a day.

  24. Maybe the suicides from workers of Foxconn seems high because it is a very BIG company (over 300,000 workers just in the factory in Shenzhen), and they outsource for one of the biggest and admired companies in the world.

Whatever Apple does, good or bad, it goes publicized a lot
