Summary: The National “Anti-Pornography” Office held an awards ceremony on January 8 to reward and encourage meritorious reporters. A university student from Shanxi Province, Little Zhang, as a result of submitting a letter reporting over 32 obscene and pornographic websites, received a 10,000 yuan big reward. In his reporting letter, Little Zhan claimed that pornographic websites have caused 6 of the 8 school mates in his dorm room to have had sexual experience, with two of them having had girls have abortions.

    It’s the kind of comment that many people who have been around here for a while are constantly thinking: what the fuck happened to this site? Why do we have to constantly endure the same fucking dumb-ass racist bullshit every single fucking post that we read? Are people ever going to grow the fuck up and realize that people EVERYWHERE are stupid, smart, funny, serious, easily-led, independant, etc. When are people going to realize that (according to sociologists) you can’t take what people post on the internet and use it to make an accurate judgment based on a population – especially not one that has MORE THAN 1 BILLION PEOPLE.

    After such a long time witnessing that garbage, it’s not easy to endure it, and it’s totally forgivable for someone to “ruin” a “funny” joke if they want to.

    Sorry if this came off as being pointed directly at you Jones. It’s just your question set me off.

A couple centuries ago your society was much more civilized, possibly by the end of this century you’ll approach the level of animals, where you can just walk up to anybody on the street and start fornicating.

    It really doesn’t matter to me though what you do in your own countries, but the problem lies in those like you who push this degeneracy on other countries/cultures. Western influence is poisoning the East with all this propaganda of immoral lifestyles, with the aim to subvert our morality and have our values plunge to a level comparable to your own.

    This is the same old colonialism, just in a more concealed form. You Westerners are forcing your alien culture and values on the world, but this time instead of doing it with guns (though there’s Iraq and Afghanistan..) you’re doing it with propaganda through the media.

    You’ve been reading too much Chinese propaganda dressed up as history. Chinese attitudes towards sex are well-documented – it’s sinful only if no money changes hands (marriage must include a large cash payment from the groom to the bride’s family). Brothels operating openly were a part of the Chinese landscape for thousands of years until Western missionaries (the same ones who railed against opium and alcohol) criticized it as a sign of a backward society. It was only in reaction that abashed Chinese leaders pushed prostitution underground, away from the prying eyes of the puritanical gweilo. It was also under the gweilo’s critical gaze that China did away with its several thousand year tradition of polygamy, out of embarrassment.

    It is therefore amusing that the halfwit who posted the above rant says that the gweilo are responsible for China’s low morals. In reality, China is a country where the wealthy and the powerful (including Chairman Mao) have always had their pick of the women at their disposal. Mao went through thousands of one-night stands with young women in their mid-teens, passing on to them the gift that keeps on giving – a veritable cocktail of venereal diseases. The problem for China’s bigwigs is that the little people cannot be allowed the sexual privileges they are – that would reduce the quality of the bed-mates they have exclusive access to. It’s not enough for China’s powerful to win – the renzha below them must lose – after all, what does being powerful mean if everyone else has access to the same sexual privileges?

    Hmm you must be a child, learn your history, China has always had pornography, sex aids, toys, lotions and potions. Pornography isn’t a Western invention it’s human, and it doesn’t cause pregnancy… sex can, especially if its between two poorly educated people or partners with no responsibility.

    Sadly statements like this demonstrate the breakdown in historical and social education you have received and highlight the brainwashed attitude so carefully cultivated in you.

    There are over 1.3 billion Chinese, that has nothing to do with colonialism!

Some of you have completely forgotten that Chinese people visit this website. This is not your fucking playground even if the language of this website predisposes it to be so.

    Imagine how Fauna or the other Chinese contributors here might feel with Joe, who has a history of being an making insensitive, arguably racist, fucktard comments, makes a comment that rests on laughing at how Chinese people might speak when sharing their opinions. Think black-face, KingTubby. Can you imagine yourself sticking your lips out when talking to black people?

    Bottom line: That wasn’t tasteful. It was downright offensive considering we’re guests on a Chinese person’s website. It’s one thing to disagree with and even poke fun at dumbass opinions some Chinese people have. It’s another to do so in conjunction with making fun of their English. How would you feel if a Chinese person made fun of your Chinese?

    How fucking hard was it for any of you to put yourselves in a Chinese person’s shoes for a moment there?

    The key thing with my harsh criticism of Joe here is because he has a history that doesn’t suggest he simply made a tasteless joke. It is his history of offensive idiocy that amplifies how offensive this particular stunt was.

    You and I have different ideas of what is offensive, or have different tolerances for what may be offensive. Some people don’t think black-face is offensive either. We’ll just have to disagree with each other on this. Joe is a dick. Those of you who thought this was SOOOOOOO funny, well, I’m disappointed.

    It isn’t so much the satire as it is the immaturity its wrapped around.

    I understand who Joe is making fun of and over what. Sure, maybe you saw an attack on Chinese fenqing, but many of you didn’t seem to see how it could offend every person who has ever tried to communicate their thoughts in a second language, of which I’m sure there are many on and behind this site.

    I suspect you haven’t tried speaking or writing in a second language enough to have encountered people who boisteriously ridicule you over it like Joe. Maybe you should try it. Go hop on over to Tiexue or something and start trying to communicate your thoughts on divisive political and cultural issues. Let’s see how you feel when someone starts ridiculing you for your Chinese.

    Few people like to be mocked on such a superficial matter. It’s like ignoring the point and making fun of how a person talks or looks. It’s an ad hominem attack. Oh, I know it can be funny, but its still mean-spirited and it’s still childish. It doesn’t matter who he was targeting. What matters was who he offended.

    The last time Fauna turned off the voting was because people were stuffing votes. I saw Joe’s comment up there reach into the 20s but is now lower. Do you think the vote stuffing was on the up votes or the down votes? Who would you expect to be vote stuffing?

    One of my favorite Western commentators on China, James Fallows, wrote something I think is relevant to this issue:

    Language note: Usually when quoting reader responses, I leave them just as they are, warts and all. But if I am sure that the note is from a non-native speaker of English, I will sometimes correct small mistakes of spelling, grammar, or usage — “have” for “has,” “hypocracy” for “hypocrisy,” — that would unduly draw attention to themselves. In this note I made three or four of these tiny copy clean-ups while leaving the rest of the phrasing and word choice unchanged. Writing in a second or third language is one of the harder intellectual challenges that exist. (Hey, writing in a first language is not always that easy!) Even though English has a larger share of non-native speakers and writers than any other language and therefore a greater tolerance for “diversity,” I think it’s justified to remove minor brambles from the writer’s path.

    I admit that this practice leaves a logical gray zone. If somebody seems to be a native speaker who just writes sloppily, I don’t bother trying to save that person from himself. But if I quickly get the sense that this is not a native speaker — and within a sentence or two I think I can always tell — I may do a little cleanup. The gray zone is when the command of grammar is shaky enough to raise questions, but not unusual enough to suggest that the writer grew up with a different language and therefore deserves affirmative-action help. This is all part of the endless saga of language being one of the most absorbing aspects of dealing with different cultures.

    Again, I know why you found it funny. I just felt that if many of you guys paused to think one step further before upvoting or posting a reply, you guys would’ve realized how distasteful it was. Cheers.
