Shanghai Woman Caught Not Paying Fare, Curses Metro Worker

Middle-aged Shanghainese woman yells at Shanghai Metro worker for catching her red-handed trying to not pay fare.

The video:

On YouTube:

What happened? On Youku: “This happened at the Line 4 Metro, Tangqiao station.“  On Liba, the post was titled: “After being caught using a fake “family of revolutionary martyr” card and trying to then squeeze through the turnstiles, a middle-aged woman viciously curses metro employee ‘cunt cunt cunt cunt…’.” On Mop and 6.cn, it was titled “Real footage, Shanghai metro worker verbally abused by fare-dodger for 20 minutes until she cries“.

A comment on Mop offering a translation:

Shrew: What the fuck are you, what are you so smug? (fight in the middle)
Shrew: You fucking cunt, who the fuck do you think you are?! Your old cunt of a mother couldn’t sell her cunt so she found you in the trash outside.
Worker A: What are you doing? Are you cursing me or my mother?
Shrew: What does it matter? I’m cursing you, cursing you, cursing your mother’s old cunt, cursing you, cursing you, cursing your mother. What? Your mother’s dirty rotten cunt, can’t sell her cunt and found you in the trash, you know that, right?
Worker B: Let it go, why are you doing this, yelling at her continuously until now?
Shrew: At your age, what do you think you can do with your face?
Worker A: You cursing me is one thing, but you even curse my mother.
Shrew: So what if I curse your mother? How did your mother give birth to someone like you? So many people at this station, yet is there anyone like you? There is no one like you.
Shrew: What the fuck are you doing?
Crowd: Alright, stop yelling, just let it go.

I am not Shanghainese, but I have worked in Shanghai for 7 years and because some people above have asked, I have translated it. Because it is so messy, the translation is not very good and she repeats herself in the end. Shanghainese old women are indeed like this, but there are people like this throughout the country, and there are still more good people [than bad people], so everyone don’t attack excessively, just condemnation is enough.

Comments from Liba:

一颗待嫁的心:

Losing face for [embarrassing] Shanghainese people. This crazy woman.

粥粉面饭:

I’ve seen this before, very frightening. With these kind of people, you can only try avoiding them. Only someone of her level is able to argue/quarrel with her. 汗

ackee:

I saw the video yesterday, and remember wondering what could possibly be the reason for this old ayi [auntie] to yell at someone like this.
Turns out the old ayi herself is without reason.
MD, the guys nearby didn’t even come out to help.

恭亲王:

This poor worker, MS [貌似, mao si, appears to be] wiping away tears…

vivi2199:

One of our neighbors, a guy, once caught someone using an elderly card [good for free fare on public transportation]. He got slapped three times. However, in the end, he was rewarded 2000 yuan. His attacker was caught.

蝶舞清秋11:

Middle-aged ayis are just like this. As long as they can save money, they don’t care about face.

云中紫雾:

I saw this in the morning too. Other posts said that worker’s mother had already passed away, and that’s why she was crying so hard. The work unit later gave her 500 RMB as “comfort money”. Accepting this money hurts too. Even if it means losing your job, one can’t let a stupid cunt be this arrogant.

bunnyrabbit:

This young woman is too weak. That day on Line 9 there was a girl who was knocked down, she was incredible, screaming a mouthful of “bbb” ["cunt cunt cunt"] at a guy, no contest, haha.

小贞:

Normally, aren’t those World Expo security guards and bag checker uncles really tough? Where are they now?

crystal_1011:

Middle-aged women aren’t to be angered, such poor characters, I often run into these kind of people when riding the metro.

Comments from Mop:

maopu:

Shanghai women are too niubi.

chkxyg:

Often see her in Shanghai, this woman has dodged fare several times, always arguing/cursing [when caught], so this incident she just happens to curse a bit longer, it is no longer surprising/shocking.
The Shanghai Metro has a group of fare-dodgers, the majority of them being locals.

我容易嗎我:

I was originally very angry, but then when I saw that it was a Shanghainese person, my anger disappeared.

落叶云烟:

Extremely without character, you’re all women, is this really necessary? Keeping the peace/being harmonious is the most important.

我身在矿区:

Oh yeah, the bullshit language of Shanghai’s little city residents, I didn’t understand a single word.

poseiden86:

No matter what, cursing someone to this level I can only say this woman 1. has nothing better to do, 2. has extremely low character, and 3. has a twisted heart.

328049825:

After watching, I no longer dare interact with Shanghainese women.

j:

And I thought Shanghainese people’s characters were so high, never imagining that [their characters] are this low, and speaking completely in dialect [Shanghainese]…vulgar, too vulgar! Hope she is human flesh searched, and then trampled on!

      Execution? Noooooo!

What she has done deserves condemnation for no doubt. However, she might have a bad day too. Her bicycle might be stolen. Her wallet might get robbed. She could have lost a lot money in stock market that day. But hey, she already got her punishment — such a awful temper will finally affect her health and luck in a bad way.

China needs more ‘repaying injury with kindness’ than execution. Tolerance and forgiveness is the key to a harmonious society.

      • crackedbamboo

Right, looks like her back is killing her the way she’s all hunched over like a Neanderthal. Tolerance and forgiveness, eh. Maybe you can buy her some pills, usher her through the turnstile and find her a nice seat before you fuck off.

      • mrsleep

I see this shit way too often.
Most of the time women. Why such a princess “I’m always right” bitchy attitude?

Not long ago I saw this woman(around 30s) jumping into the bycicle lane without looking.

This guy almost hit her and to avoid her almost fell down on his face. The woman just kept walking like nothing. The guy, when recovered, said to her: “why don’t you look before crossing?” (without being rude nor screaming )

    and *SNAP!!!*

woman:你是谁啊!!!傻B!!!! blablablablabla (similar to the video up there, just not so much mother cunts involved and for around 3-4 straight minutes, even when the guy already left.

    Damn xiao huang di.

    • NoRacistSmack

That’s a poor dude. Sorry for him.

Women in their 30s-50s are hardly Xiao Huang Di. Actually the scolded metro worker was born in 1980s and she is the opposite of what you call a Xiao Huang Di.

      Instead they are Obasan.

      • http://www.westiseast.co.uk Chris

yeah, younger Chinese women (90年后的笑皇帝), at least those in Fuzhou, tend to have different reactions when put under pressure or accused of something. When I used to teach, if you accused a female student of doing something (like cheating, talking, dropping litter, whatever) the typical reactions were:

        1. Deny that they did it
        2. Blame someone else
        3. Start crying

It was kind of funny, the reactions were so predictable it was unbelievable.

Older women (again, in Fuzhou) tend to be much more aggressive and coarse, shouting, cursing or even hitting when someone confronts them, regardless of who was wrong/right. There’s nothing more unattractive than a 50 year old wrinkled Fuzhou woman screaming at the top of her lungs for 20 minutes in 福州话…

  • Hate those

Almost daily encounter bitches like that in the expo, really impossible to deal with… gai zhang gai zhang tmd

  • Shanghairen

Typical behavior. You get caught, so you just go on the offensive as if you’re 100% right. I see turnstile jumpers all the time on the Shanghai subway. Putting a cop there and charging 100 yuan for each violation would work wonders. And when I say cop, I mean a real cop with the power to whale someone on the head if they resist (because the person will of course deny, indignantly, doing anything wrong).

      • aclcla

hi ping, i dont think you understood what crystal was trying to say.
i think her comment meant was a play on words meaning ‘this is the real shanghai on exhibit’…

  • perplexed

Why are Shanghainese like this? She is angry she was caught, and obviously she is a bitter person. She has gotten away with getting away with cheating for so long that she felt entitled to continue. So the transit worker catches the old Shanghainese Bitch and she gets screamed at… for what? doing her job, keeping order, keeping things fair. The metro fare is not very expensive, yet people in Shanghai are so damn cheap!

I have seen Shanghainese women pump ketchup directly into a glass jar at IKEA! I caught one one woman and she scampered away with a big ass shit eating grin on her face because I saw her in action.

Unbelievable how cheap people are in Shanghai… and they call themselves sophisticated?

    I dont’ think so.

    • To Jones

      LOL… you are an idiot.

Let me summarise with the greatest simplicity so even a nimwit like you can understand.

With a population of 1 000 000 people, assuming that 1% of the population is uneducated and foul mouthed, that means there are 10 000 of these people that exist in a particular land area.

With a population of 20 000 000, there are now 200 000 of these people. If the size of the city is the same, you now have 20 times more of these people within the same landmassed area.

If anything, this is behaviour that is not limited to Shanghai but all cities in China. Why you feel perplexed to state this is a problem with Shanghainese is puzzling. People from Beijing are MUCH MUCH worse.

      • Chunghwa

to Jones? wut? I haven’t seen him around here yet… or am I hallucinating text in front of me?

        • Gambit

I think “To Jones” is his alias.

    • Snicker

I don’t think it has to do with Shanghai — we participate in industry expositions in Beijing, and every time, there are these old ladies who pay the 5 kuai to get in, and they go to every desk and shovel off all the unsupervised paper pamphlets to take away and sell to the recyclers. No shame.

    • anne

Someone sounds like a bitter “waidi” person.

  • Zebadee

Why aren’t the security guards doing the job they’re paid to do? Why do they want to just stand there and try to reason with a crazy women who has clearly lost control? Do they not think her comments are offensive to the public? Why didn’t they arrest her and/or remove her to an office where the matter can be dealt with in private and/or she calms down?
Metro security are as much at fault here for allowing this situation to escalate. They should be suspended for their talking/gawping response.

    • Snicker

Metro security wouldn’t be a very exciting job if they didn’t allow these situations to escalate. In fact, no police job would be exciting here if it wasn’t allowed to escalate. Where was that traffic cop stabbed to death while the crowd and cops cowered 50m away? That guy even went to a store and stole a case of beer and got drunk before the cops tried to do anything about him.

After all, what if this woman’s husband (god bless his soul) is the cousin of the security guy’s boss? Touch her and you lose your job. oops.

      • NoRacistSmack

I can’t agree with your observation. It’s actually an order from the higher-up of the metro company to avoid conflicts with passengers as much as possible, even the justice is on the worker’s side as in this case. The reason is complicated and not because the woman has any connections to the metro company. Read more here:

        http://www.mango360.com/?action-viewnews-itemid-66942

Also, there’s no need to generalize a single incident happened in Dandong to all police. There are ten more times that police do their duty properly or even use police forces excessively.

        • Something Something

I’ll give you the excess, often imbecilic use of force, but actually doing their job? Cops in this country are as useful as tits on a boar. You heard about the Shanghai ninja a few years back that slaughtered a police station full of em with a kitchen knife. We had a crazy bitch barricade herself in our office once and it took 3 hours 10 cops and a SWAT team with riot shields to get her out. One word to describe cops in this country ‘pathetic’.

          • NoRacistSmack

I knew someone gonna point out the Yang Jia case. But don’t forget regular Chinese police (civil or traffic police, not paramilitary/armed police) don’t wear a gun or even a taser gun and most of them weren’t trained in martial arts. Their duty is mostly on handling civil disputes rather than stopping armed crimes so I don’t see how they would react much differently to a planed surprise attack by a desperate person, though case of attacking police is actually rare. English media don’t give you a good coverage of Chinese police doing their job — they are either depicted as brutal or incapable to fit into the “China is a police state” or “China is about to have a revolution” picture. Instead, pick up any local Chinese newspaper to find out how they do their daily job in reality.

          • http://www.westiseast.co.uk Chris

@Zebadee – the metro security guards are probably scared shitless themselves of that woman!

@NoRacistSmack – exactly! If you trust the news (or whatever nonsense gets elevated to the news these days, you’ll believe that all Chinese police are violent cowards.

A couple of weeks ago I visited the local police station in Fuzhou for some document signing/stamping. While I was waiting, I listened to a local policeman very calmly and authoritatively resolve a dispute between about twenty rowdy 民工. I came out with much respect for that man.

      • crackedbamboo

About the incident in Dandong, maybe you mistake compassion for cowardice, in that the police let the guy get his drink on knowing it would be his last

  • munchy

F*cking useless security workers! Its the same everywhere in China, they just stand around and do nothing. Hire some thugs or something and at least they’d drag that bitch outta there.

Yet another situation where I have to wonder: at what point is it justified for the person to simply leap over the counter and smack the shit out of the lady cursing her?

Pretty sure that’s what the result would’ve been in America.

  • concernedcitizen

Shanghai is more westernized than other cities in china,
but being westernized doesn’t necessarily mean having sophistication and manners…IMO many Shanghainese tend to think they’re the shit because they get more exposure from the west, but its like they decided to take crass materialism from the west but none of the principles that prevent extreme cases such as this…and all for the savings of maximum 4 rmb.

This is just one example of fare dodging, there are more that I’ve seen, and these people are just plain unreasonable. Just go to the Expo to see a collection of exaples. Old or middle aged Shanghainese women, they’re fucked in the head I tell you. That’s why expats tell everyone one coming in never to marry one!

Was in Shanghai a couple of weeks back… The metro staff are really nice to foreigners like me, but I can’t say the same about the locals who rushed in for seats and shove everyone outta the way. I even saw one lady nearly STRANGLED another accidentally as she tried to squeeze in to sit .. Really laughable if u think back about it.

  • Hondo

The height of incivility. I see it in the streets everyday, cursing and saying all sorts of dirty words. In my hometown, if a woman insults another woman’s cunt, which is rare, she is fined heavily by a group of other women. It’s a shame to see people behave in such a way, and she is from a country that has more than 5000 years of history and civilization. It’s a shame. We don’t behave like this in Africa.

    • Jonathan Ryan Feng Tien

Agreed. This is taking uncivilized behavior to a whole new level. You become absolutely convinced that her fury feeds further fury and she becomes convinced in that her actions are justified. I see this quite often and it’s disgusting.

Imagine if it was your Mother in that Video? What a totally disgusting display, especially when she was clearly a thief. She is stealing free transport from the people of China who end up paying for the service instead of that selfish old bitch.

Attack as a form of defence seems to be common in this type of female. I had a couple of ex housemates from HK and one was from a SH family. If you asked them to do anything, pay the bills they owned etc, both would act in a similar way to this.

It is a shame to the face of their race to behave like that. But the worst part for people like this is that they probably believe that they are right and other people are wrong

  • tdo

People like this do not deserve the civility the Rail Workers showed her. Had I been there (on my own) I would have yelled at the bitch to shut the hell up.

  • uncommon sense

i really don’t like all the comments where people pass judgement instead of understanding or empathizing. social pressure causes people to lose temper and lose control.. have you ever lost your temper before? well then shut the fuck up cuz you’d do the same thing. what makes you so great? pray for others, don’t dismiss people AS IF you’re better.

    • Jonathan Ryan Feng Tien

Uhm, yes, I can understand “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”, but I honestly feel that many Shanghainese are absolutely the most unreasonable of a society of already frayed tempers. You talk about pressure…imagine the similar pressure people experience in Tokyo…..but you don’t see this kind of stuff there despite the fact that the population density is even greater. No, it’s the culture. If anyone in America were to lose their temper like this, no one would sympathize with her.

Also, this is not the *first time something like this has happened in Shanghai and HongKong and hit the airways…I remind you of the Bus Uncle incident and the HKIA lady. Then there was that HK woman in the bar in Korea. All of them just plain embarrass the rest of us Chinese.

I honestly can tell you I have NEVER ever caused a scene like this in my life. Not Ever. I keep myself stayed and cooled. At home, I have a punching bag. But this behavior is completely reprehensible. I say that because I see it in Shanghai all the time. It’s not a rare event: it’s commonplace.

I’m Chinese-American. Both my parents are from Shanghai and I feel that I have the position to declare that the most unreasonable people I’ve ever met are from Shanghai, especially the women. Sorry, ladies, but this is true. I have my own family to substantiate my claim which I really wish I could deny. For the most part, the men do not get involved and the families are extremely matriarchal. As a result, what you get is very unreasonable people. I sure hope this tend goes away after some time. This woman’s behavior does not surprise me at all. They’re the type who would paint themselves as the victim if they attempted robbery.
