A lot of bitter comments above…

Videos of flooding in Wuhan: Below are a few popular videos on Youku featuring scenes of flooding in Wuhan and how residents have been coping. These videos quickly accumulated hundreds of thousands of views as they were uploaded over the past few days.

More pictures of flooding in Wuhan: Below is a collection of photographs that have been circulating on the Chinese internet on popular discussion forums like Tianya and social networks like Sina Weibo. (Click on thumbnails for larger versions).

There are a few images of fish in the above collection. This is because it has now not uncommon to catch fish in the flood waters throughout the city. An internet meme associated with the Wuhan floods has been “武汉人伤不起” (Wuhan ren shang bu qi), or roughly “Wuhan people can’t be hurt (handled, kept down)”.

沙发, only it is sitting in water, and not in the living room.

  • Seboji

things that happen around student’s fraternity rarely happen elsewhere, i also saw some run naked after graduating! and on Chinese men and foreign wives post, what is the different between Black women and African women as LZ posted on the title?

    • Kong

Not all black people are African, and not all africans are black. The post was specifically referring to Chinese-black relationships between Chinese guys and African girls. In Chinese, the difference isn’t so much of an ethnic one, but more of emphasis: the skin color or the geographic location?

      • Tengu

All Cognac is brandy, but not all brandy is Cognac!

      • Seboji

interesting, but i thought all blacks around the world came from Africa sometimes back, thus it could be said all blacks have their descendants back in Africa. i dont know…

        • Skepticist

Yes, all blacks came from Africa. As did all people of all races. And elephants, too.

        • wallimo

how about this all humans came from Africa, BOOM! unless you believe the chinese thoughts which is everyone came from Africa except the Chinese who believe they originated from China.

I watched a very interesting bbc documentary on it!!

          • Seboji

yeah that what they thought, they believe that they are descendants of Chinese dragon, but recently the science proved them wrong, a scientist from China took samples of all the 52 ethnic groups in China and surprising it proved that they have genes backing to Africa. But most of Chinese have been brain washed it hard to convince them. They call Africa feizhou(non-livable continent, may be best for animals) so they can believe they came in such place! lol

          • DUXESTLUX

            Dragons….ahahah…Chinese come from pigs

          • Sunshine

“they believe that they are descendants of Chinese dragon,”

Joke’s on you if you actually think that the Chinese actually believe they descended from a dragon.

“They call Africa feizhou(non-livable continent, may be best for animals) ”

What? Africa is called feizhou because it is short for a fei li jia which means nothing of the sort. Fail trolling.

        • Kong

How many generations back counts as being “from” that region? With that thinking, no Americans are white. What about South Asians? They have dark skin about the same color as “black” people, but are not “African”. What about Middle-easterners in Africa (Morocco, Libya, Egypt)?

Even further, just where is the geographical distinction between Europe, Africa, the Middle-east, and Asia?

There are Black people who have lived in other parts of the world for hundreds or thousands of years, and there are British- and Dutch-descended white peoples living in South Africa for over 100 years as well.

        • Alikese

There are black people in New Guinea, and aboriginal Australians are black too. “Black people” is usually used to refer to people of African descent, but it isn’t exclusive. Even some southern Indians have skin as dark as Wesley Snipes.

I’m guessing your not from a western background then. Running around naked is a big cliche these days. however, marching rugby players down the main street naked with plastic bags on their heads(whilst vomiting) as the captain is dressed as a nazi officer is quite the trend these days.

I’m 39 and I only started listening to Radiohead last month. Heard ‘Creep’ years ago and thought it was bollocks. A friend introduced me to ‘OK Computer’ just recently. Masterpiece. Absolutely captivating. Not sure how much of it is down to their songwriting capabilities or seriously creative production. Either way, I’m blown away by it. As for rape, isn’t it something the police deal with?

Sexual assault does happen in China, and you are right, people don’t tend to speak up about it. If you’re not already mad about something, well, here’s something else:

[if you love to only skim, then just read my highlighted text]
      From Shanghai Daily:
(I tried leaving a link but spambot doesn’t like me)

      Kindergarten sex assault figures rise

THE number of young girls allegedly sexually abused by a security guard at a city kindergarten now stands at 11, police said yesterday.

Another four girls, aged between six and seven, were added to the seven alleged victims previously reported at Tongxing Kindergarten in Minhang District.

And officers warned the number is likely to increase further as more parents, who used to be reluctant to report abuse as they feared the exposure would be bad for their child’s future, will come forward.

Police said some victims’ parents were even unaware of what happened.

Others are still waiting for medical reports from hospitals.

An emergency meeting was held yesterday by the Minhang District Education Bureau, which regulates all 15 private kindergartens and 85 daycare centers in the district. It said that from now on at least one teacher must patrol classrooms when children are taking noon naps.

In the past, the bureau said private-owned kindergartens and daycare centers must hire professional guards from large companies, and offered to subsidize one appointment.

The series of sexual assaults is alleged to have started last year.

Guard Han Baosi, a 34-year-old Jiangxi Province native and cousin of the kindergarten owner, is said to have slipped into classrooms while children were taking a nap and abused girls, taking photographs and movies with his cell phone.

Meanwhile, although local kindergartens are required to hire professional security guards from legal companies, many private-owned kindergartens – often catering for the children of non-local families in suburban areas – hire cheaper, unlicensed guards. These are unlikely to have been vetted.

At private-owned Xiangtai Kindergarten, also in Minhang District, the only stipulations for a security guard was that he had to be more than 168 centimeters tall and have no tattoos. No details of qualifications or a clean criminal record were requested.

“It’s too expensive for us to hire a professional guard,” said the director of a Baoshan private-owned kindergarten, surnamed Zhou.

Zhou said it cost only 300 yuan (US$46.4) to 500 to train a migrant worker as a security guard, and their salary would be less that 1,500 yuan per month. A professional guard is usually paid between 3,000 yuan to 4,000 yuan per month.

The Minhang education bureau said it would not close kindergartens hiring unqualified guards as the children would have no place to go.

“Sexual assault does happen in China, and you are right, people don’t tend to speak up about it.”

Indeed, from the vaguely ominous stories I’ve heard from young women, boys identifying themselves as “brother” has made an effective silencer for decades.

Perhaps Chinasmack should lade the term in question with another stratum of meaning.

        • http://candosino.wordpress.com terroir

“boys identifying themselves as “brother” has made an effective silencer for decades.”

Wow. Sounds like a huge silencer. Does this “effective silencer” match the equally monumentuous gun Mao was talking about from which power flows?

[announcer finishes introduction, lights dim, crowd buzzes with excitement... then:]

“SHOT THROUGH THE HEART AND YOU’RE TO BLAME
DARLING, YOU GIVE LOVE — A BAD NAME!”

          • Bruce

Well, the Harmonious Society has almost run its course and things are getting really complex up in here. Gotta have deep plans for stability. Looking down that winding road with tolls every 20 meters, I figure once the boomers are scooped out of China’s population, the next 5 year session will really return to China’s roots, putting it all out for fleshy growth. Enter enlightened policy of Chairman Deng Fou Yu: “We’re all one big family, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have sex.”

Had to get that pun out there.. at the same time, it’s great that these kids have enough water to dilute all the salt the Chinese netizens are trying to rub into the wound that is REALITY.

Harmony is a real downer when everyone else won’t allow you to be happy at the happiest moment of your life. It’s as though the levee broke and washed out all the highs and low, and you’re left standing on a collective tide of cried tears that you will eventually sink into over a lifetime.

  • Anonanon

Bye-bye economical infrastructure, hello city-wide water theme park!

Damn kids. Enjoy it while it lasts, because you’re swimming in billions of dollars in property damage, which will be reimbursed by taxes and whatever healthcare cuts they’re gonna make.
