“Help The Elderly” Sculpture In Guilin Indecent & Obscene?

The "Helping the Elderly" statue in Guilin China, criticized as being indecent by many netizens.

From NetEase, Sina, Sohu:

A “Help the Elderly” sculpture in a Guilin neighborhood has been called “indecent”

Recently, the Guangyuan International Community on Zhongyin Road in Guilin city erected a sculpture named “Helping the Elderly”, the sculpture being two “stark naked” women carrying a man, the inscription below reading “Wife on the left, daughter-in-law on the right, the moral is of family harmony, harmonious coexistence, supporting each other, respecting and loving the elderly”. Netizens photographed the sculpture and posted it onto discussion forums and blogs, immediately creating heated netizen discussion, with many netizens saying the sculpture is too avant-garde and dumbfounding, while other netizens say art cannot be taken too seriously.

The "Helping the Elderly" statue in Guilin China, defended by many netizens as being humorous..

Community resident Mrs. Li told this reporter, from the meaning expressed through the sculpture, it is like an elderly man who has difficulty moving being helped to the toilet with the support of his wife and daughter. However in real life, this kind of scene is rare. With the man’s genitals carved so prominently, it isn’t very tasteful, and had he been “wearing” clothes or pants, it may be a bit better. With regards to this sculpture, most netizens are critical, but there are also netizens who believe that though the sculpture doesn’t look very tasteful, it is still rather creative; Some netizens feel it is very humorous, believing that art doesn’t need to be concealed, that one cannot only look at the simple surface, that the artistic conception is more important.

From Sina:

网易浙江省网友:

Your wife naked accompanying your grandfather to the toilet.
Art!!! Is this what an expert said???? You think being naked is automatically Venus?
That he is naked is one thing, but the most shameless thing is that it is actually erect!

网易江苏省连云港市网友:

Too disgusting, how is this going to eat, its clearly going to take a shit. Moreover, I’ve never seen taking a shit requiring the pants to be completely removed.

网易河北省邢台市网友:

[The man in the statue] clearly is a leader [government official]!!!!

网易陕西省安康市网友:

May I ask why your son’s wife needs to be completely naked for you to go to the toilet? The son’s wife and wife basically seem to be of the same age, so what does this suggest?

网易北京市朝阳区网友

Promotes threesomes.

网易河北省张家口市网友:

So stark naked and no mosaic applied [not censored]?? Please forgive me for being evil/thinking dirty…

网易广东省汕尾市网友:

If there was one more woman kneeling in front, then this piece of art would be perfect.

网易云南省保山市网友:

What is art, is this what art is? Sigh, so sad.

网易北京市海淀区网友:

Strongly suggest human flesh searching the creator of this piece of work and its models. What kind of bullshit art is this! It is simply dirty perversion!

Comments from Sohu:

搜狐陕西省渭南市网友:

Where is the daughter-in-law, that’s obviously his wife and mistress!

梦醒后的人生:

If it is taking care of the elderly, why aren’t the wife and daughter-in-law clothed? That it isn’t convenient for the elderly person to have his pants on can be understood, but why aren’t the wife and daughter-in-law not wearing clothes? Those who approve of this have problems.

客观评价者:

A worthless sculpture. Garbage.

搜狐河南省郑州市网友:

Respecting the elderly, supporting the elderly, these things are worth promoting and should be extolled. However, when grandpa needs to use the toilet, is it necessary for grandma and his daughter-in-law to be there completely naked?! This isn’t extolling virtue or an artistic rendering, it is polluting the senses and twisting ethics! Hehe, or maybe my aesthetic appreciation is not good enough?

搜狐湖北省武汉市网友:

The designer is so avant-garde as to have gone too far. The buyer is shamelessly dirty. Recommend that the buyer use their own money to buy it back and put it in their own home so their entire family can together admire it everyday. At the same time, learn to use the toilet completely naked.

0b3041f6f97da3d0:

Must one be naked before they can “help the elderly”? What is going on with our people, why do we only do things that stupefy people, always doing things that confound the ordinary common people, is this popular culture, or is it just to become “known”, a publicity stunt?

搜狐福建省厦门市网友:

Creators/artists always like to exaggerate/get attention, creating crazy works, placing a pile of shit and then exaggerating that it is “art”, and those who spend hundreds of thousands to buy them have shit for brains.

What do you think of this sculpture?

Need help when you’re old? Personals @ chinaSMACK.

  • Boss

If you want to help an elder, you must be a female, and naked. That’s the real meaning of this.

laoban, won’t you claim the sofa?

      • Boss

        Yes, yes, sofa!!

if this stature was made by the Catholics then the helpers would be little boys.

Thanks for crawling out of your troll hole to express your “opinion”

      • FYIADragoon

Why so mad and “pained” around the rectum?

  • roger dodger

I think it is offensive. But in a way it isn’t because you do see loads of statues in the west with statues of women fully exposed. Although I would say the genitals are not usually that in your face. I say its offensive just because of the way the statues are positioned. Its not art its just making a statement about sex and being foul and disgusting; nobody looking at this would assume its anything to do with family it looks like a pimp with his whores.. (Says alot about that society)

  • bert

It’s funny how the penis is sticking straight out.

If that sculpture remains that guys johnson is going to be grabbed by thousands of people, within a year it is either going to get snapped off or it will become black from all the handling.

  • Scytheria

But why taking a shit? Couldn’t some other less unpleasant task be found to make a statue of? Why naked? The artist, if he or she can be called that (I personally think it looks like a child’s piece of work) has really not come up with something fit for purpose. If it’s there to make you feel like helping the elderly, why do so through the medium of “pinching a loaf”?

  • Muay Thai guy

Oh come on, it’s just for a laugh, I quite like it!

    • kissmyass

      of course no problem….
in Thailand young girls love old Caucasian man!!!!

  • Jess

Yeah, that’s kinda gross…but, considering what passes for “art” these days, it’s relatively not all that bad.

  • Irvin

This really can’t be call “art”, I’ve seen more artistic mannequins than this rubbish.

  • Anon

This statue is quite healing for the neglected among those needing such support, and speaks of a form of closeness that needs to be fostered again in this day and age.

    Caretakers rather than relatives?

This sculpture would only be appreciated by those in this (unpleasant) situation, but not the typical youngish and highly mobile forum commentator – a grim reminder in fact, humorously and tastefully done even managing to include a suitably included libido.

Don’t be so quick to criticize, it’s interpretative significance is manifold and meaningful. Try taking a look at the sculpture again 20 years later.

The people living in the area are in for a philosophical treat with the presence of this statue. The artist has not reached the pinnacle of his art yet. The sense of ‘freshness’ is abundant here.

    • bomber

not an art critic, but I agree. wait 20 years, and see. besides, having a 1/2 chinese kid of my own, I can attest to the fact that when you hold them in the peeing position and do the whispery whistle sound, their johnson does kind of stick out like a that.

Cool piece of art. Telling that so many people immediately noticed the phallic content and dismissed it as disgraceful. What’s on their minds?

  • Bo Wang

If the intention of this piece is to raise awareness of helping the elderly, then the artist succeeded. It’s like the sculpture equivalent of a viral video.

Expect to see Facebook profile photos of tourists giving the old geezer handjobs or fake blowjobs in the future.

    • anon

LOL that’s very true and likely!

  • Nathan

90% of Chinese commenter’s missed the point… back to school kids

    • Marsvin

From the comments here looks like they’re not the only ones that don’t get it.

That said this isn’t my cup of tea either, but not because it’s “offensive.”

  • Alikese

It’s dumb and ugly (does the old man have snot pouring out of his nose?) but if the real estate developer liked it enough to buy it, there’s no reason not to let it be shown.

Next time just put a grade school exercise set in and be done with it.

    • Jones

If he insisted on displaying a penis, why did he choose to make it pointing straight out like that?

  • dim mak

    lol, welcome to modern art

I say it leave it for the lulz

  • Ready4Truth

Finally, a Mao sculpture with historical accuracy!

They should put it in every university’s main gate.

    • roger dodger

lmao now that would be art.

  • MassiveBender

Those statues of women are ‘stark naked’? They have the hint of a chiseled nipple, it’s not like they have two marble labia a clit hanging out. The naked figures are not sexualised at all with there expressionless, solemn faces (although, come to think of it, that’s the expression my girlfriend has when I have sex with her).

    • Sunshine

      I’m sorry.

      Short comment is short.

    • Anon

Glad we’re not you? Sex positivity is not as common as it should be in some parts of East Asia. Lets hope this sculpture opens things up abit.

      • Irvin

The statues isn’t “sexual” it’s just disgusting.

  • john digmeme

This is a really great sculpture. The message, as I interpret it, is the same as Tony Montana in Scarface’s message. All you have in this world are your balls and your word, it’s up to you use them to attain enough wealth and concubines to last into old age.

  • proterozoic

It’s funny how all the Chinese commenters missed the truly offensive part, which is that this guy is using two women as furniture. This sculpture isn’t avant-garde; it’s regressive as hell.

    • B-real

Exactly, the old regresses back to infancy and who more better care taker of babies than good women who were brought up by their elders when they were infants. Unfortunately that type of shit would not fly with any one. If I have to help you shit or piss then its time for some nurses to be hired. That type of care takes the love for your elders right out of you. Infancy is supposed to last for 3 years but old people can live for decades.

    • Sunshine

I think the sculpture was attempting to portray an old man who is not able to support himself (maybe some sort of paralysis or leg problem, which is really not so uncommon in China), so using people as support/”furniture” is not so out of line. Though I do also wonder why they had to be women in particular… maybe in an attempt to achieve balance within the piece? Haha I don’t know……

      • Rakim Fairtex

because if two naked men carried him than that would be gay

  • B-real

I don’t see anything wrong with it. I’ve seen worse here in Beijing. Wha surprises me is that the Gov sanctioned this piece. Good Step forward and a nice subliminal message. Plus it being in the “international community” I don’t think its going anywhere anytime soon. Good way for the local to break away from fear social reprise and run with it.

    • anon

Where does it say the government sanctioned this piece? I don’t think all sculptures have to be reviewed and approved by the government…

      • Ryo

It may not be sanctioned but if the government doesn’t like it for any reason, they’ll have it take down/destroy.

If it’s offensive to the China regiment, the creator can be jailed/hanged/shot.

        Welcome to China!

        • anon

Right, I think that’s the case with obscenities laws in pretty much every country…

          • B-real

I assumed it was Gov sanctioned because I don’t think any real artist would taint art with messages that closely relate to Gov agenda. And what Ryo said it allowed to be placed in plain veiw for anyone to see. Some Governing had to be involved somewhere in this.

  • Jiang

Carried by nude women. Old cock also will come alive.

  • Foreign Devil

If I’m an old man in China will I get similar treatment? He is quite erect and happy with his helpers.

I enjoy this sculpture! So much effort to create something so absurd!

  • babysitter

that is too shameless!!why all of them are totally naked??without two naked bodies, the poor and old guy can’t pee,can he?

    • Anon

      @Ryo

Who said it’s not a bath house with bath ladies (suitably unattractive being a hiring criteria but not scarily so) washing a bathhouse client off? It’s no big deal and a luxury to boot, fosters closeness between genders and hardly pornographic unless you’re one of those ‘frustrated’ types for any reason. Nakedness is a subtle commentary again here in the context of artwork in relation to the aged.

      @babysitter

Too many immatured minds in the gutter of ignorance and lack of appreciation of ‘high culture’. Your interpretation shows where your mind is, or has not been enough, or what your (narrow minded) community is like. This is ‘Art Appreciation 101′ in fact. And your comment and choice of nick alongside others shows those that fail. The style is completely desexualized even with the erect penis excepting the Pygmalionists here.

      @Foreign Devil

The answer (and suggestion) in part to your question would be – Probably they’d prioritise this form of palliative care to Chinese first, though maybe you could start your own movement in ‘the West’, or begin brand name Bathhouses to allow this in USA or who knows even China itself.

Brothels and Bathhouse are distinct service oriented areas with different workers catering to different crowds. Those caretakers need not be women all the time, subtle energy exchange needs between either gender could determine criteria of choice, which is what a Bathhouse is all about that being mostly unavailable in the ‘civilised’ world leads to bad relationships and bad marriages and of course children that are born of a need and not a purpose – thats where the quality of individual in ‘soul-formation’ is decided.

A daring entrepreneur should start a new service trend within Chinese society – Bathhouses. Try State run for a start to set disciplined examples and prevent abuses, then later private Bath houses for men/women, or open house palliative care centres where old folks in general can go for non-sexual maintenance (watch the pricing and prepare for boycott though!!! It’s a bath and minimum wage worthy at most, quite a relaxing environment for the workers so inclined too) – this idea fosters normalcy and helps towards a desexualized society overall, if without any ‘control’ agenda of course).

Conversely adult services should also be properly legal to show the difference between both, so that all areas of service are holistically covered.

This sculpture opens much valuable discourse, we should thank the artist, not threaten or insult. Very thought provoking responses, even if generally negative, expressing of discomfort and unfamiliarity with the ‘Human Condition’.

Promote Bathhouses (nominally at Hot/Mineral Spring venues?) as avenues of Longevity, and a mark of civilisation! A valuable service industry right there, being ignored even as nepotism and corruption unaddressed tear society apart!

I’d say Western and even Middle Eastern tourists would rush to China by the droves for a ‘Palliative/Energy Wash’ if they don’t set up the same in their societies first! Civilisation rules!

  • diverdude

I can’t stop giggling… that is the funniest sculpture I’ve ever seen. :-) look at the ol’ guys expression. he landed on top in the ‘rat race’. only thing better would’ve been one of the girls pulling a Led Zeppelin on him… “the way u squeeze my Lemon makes me wanna fall right outta bed!”

  • 王老吉

Now let’s be realistic…If an old man falls on the street, I believe nobody (chinese) would actually help the old man to get up. Nobody would take the risk of having to take the old man to hospital in case he is hurt. Nobody would take the risk of having to pay the medical bills in case the old man is poor! We (laowais in certain places of China) know that’s true (because it’s not like this in all mainland, but try going to Henan or Guangzhou).
Even worse if you’re an old Foreign man. I wouldn’t be surprise if somebody chinese actually pushes you)…

That’s why I love Beijing. Different kind of Chinese People :)

  • Ryo

The Chinese always had a fear of getting old. They teach their kids to “respect” the elders. They teach their kids to have kids as soon as possible. All for what? So that they’ll have someone to take care of them when they get old.

The elderly Chinese are very ignorant. They do not realize the fact that most kids will grow up being poor, labor workers.

I’ve asked many Chinese why they want kids. Their response is “this is what I’m suppose to do.” In other words, they were brain washed as a child to do this, without considering the fact that they can’t even support themselves.

Hell, even my pop asks me why I don’t want to have kids. He said “who’s going to take care of me when I get old?” So yeah, that’s the only reason he had me. Selfish Selfish Selfish Selfish Selfish Selfish.

Having a kid now-a-days can be deadly to your health, as you can see in the last article. I wish more of this will happen so people will realize having kids is more of a burden when you’re poor, then helpful to you when you’re old, if you even get that old before they stab you to death!

    • dim mak

Your purpose in life is to propagate your genes. Chinese are biologically successful, what’s wrong with that? It’s a good mentality to have.

      • Ray

So that is your answer for question, “what is the meaning of life”? To have descendants should only be part of your life, and as humans, we are intelligent enough (should be) to plan ahead of our descendants as well, not just to blindly reproduce like animals….

This said, I’m not saying I agree with what Ryo said about chinese elders want kids for their own benefit, I’m just saying that there is more to life than to reproduce.

    • Meow mix

so who is going to take care of your dad when he is old? sounds like you are the selfish one…

  • blackflagnation

lol…looks more like a statue promoting family orgy. what with the protruding penis? it’s only a matter of time before the boner gets broken off by kids hanging on it.

    • Anon

Might have a steel reinforcement inside so it doesn’t happen? They don’t look like that to some of us. Orgy is in the eye of beholder?

  • Curren$y

    Damn, this sculpture is nuts!

  • ##BlothaLonely##

Bottom line- only naked women please at that age to me.

  • Joey

I love the Chinese people especially the ones on this site…….they love to pretend, but don’t be surprise if you see them tomorrow at the Zhongyin Road with their cameras taking pictures at the sculpture they have all condemned on this site………One love China……..hahaha

  • Justin

Women hold up half the sky (and both halves of an old man’s ass to carry him to take a shit).

  • Spiritual Pollution

Strongly promote a healthy society. Statue has a built in pull-up bar.

  • Rick in China

Regardless of your criticisms or view, it’s a sculpture.

Whether you like it or not is up to you, criticize away, but artistic license (regardless if it’s offensive, good, bad, whatever) gives the artist freedom to express whatever he or she wants without, ideally, having to subject themselves to censorship.

That being said, where a piece of art is displayed should be carefully considered when consigning a piece like this – because the ‘common’ view of it is obviously offensive to many. The official who signed the check should be asked to pay out of pocket and put the statue in his (likely) large estate, rather than have it displayed in a public square where people feel disgusted, shame, or some other negative emotion upon viewing. Not to say it’s bad, but that seems to be the reception from so many people.

    • Anon

Well there are many low minded and stuffy people then!

This is hardly porno, or even near both Western artist or Eastern hentai styles when compared. The muted lines say so. The amorphous body shapes confirm as well. This is more along the lines of the nudity in stone frescos in Cambodian temples or Hindu culture, perhaps Apollo (bravo for the artists’ bravery in erecting where Apollo was left flaccid – compensation factor being the age and realism of characters to balance out) and Venus?

Nothing in common to anything titillating (and believe it that titillating is way beyond this tepid but meaningful sculpture), being an artist and constant observer of both art styles and the real stuff I can tell you that the artist is teaching the public, who really should learn, rather than impose their philistine lack of artistic sense on those with yet to form opinion or study art.

      • Marsvin

So you’re saying the artist has a right to impose his views on the “philistines”, but the public does not? If you’re talking about a private gallery that’s different but this is ostensibly a public square. Sounds pretty snobby to me.

        • B-real

That’s not what he said at all. Point was for the public to keep and open mind. Sure they hae the right to be critics but the artisits work should not be shunned if it was purely artitistic. The only imposing going on in this is the plaque pushing false harmony and guilt on those who don’t have or want what it takes to take care of their elderly.

Societies imposes limitations for ideals it doesn’t fully understand. To be restricted to private viewings and galleries is anti artist. How is an artist supposed to adverstise when limititions as such are imposed on their work.

Airbus wouldn’t be able to make planes if they forced to keep them on the ground.

Women wouldn’t be able to have children if they were forced to stay virgins.

But I have to step back and agree that a statue of 2 men pounding away at a women should not be publicly displayed and carefully considered by the artist and then maybe Gov intervention of fining or confiscating the work if any laws were violated. Its up for debate.

          • Ray

I think that since its placed in a public area, it should be considered by the locals first to determine whether or not the majority of them will find this piece offending. I mean in the end the artist or the owner of the piece, deciding to place it in a public area, should be considerate of the viewers, because in such an environment the viewers are often involuntary.

*This is not directed to anyone here*
The artist can argue that people are just being childish and that they are below his realm of the understanding in true beauty but when it comes down to it, if they don’t like your work and don’t want it in their face, they should have that right.

          • Rick in China

            @Ray: Exactly the point.

            @B-real, Anon
The artist has the right to create any art he likes, that’s artistic license. Everyone can go to enjoy his art should he put it on display – in his own or some other private art gallery. The problem is with putting something that many obviously find offensive or shameful or whatever is that it’s trying to *force* the public to “be open minded” or “accept it as art”, which he/whomever consigned the sculpture have no more right to do than the public does to prevent him from creating art. I do agree that it’s not that offensive, to me, but does that mean everyone else has to accept that view and suck it up, letting something that, for obvious reasons, *could* be seen as offensive be displayed in such a public place…especially in a society that claims to be relatively conservative? The question isn’t whether it *is* or *isn’t* offensive, that’s subjective, the question is whether something contradictory should be forced upon the public and paid for with their tax dollars without their input, all under the guise of “it’s art”.

  • Matt smith

Truly a despicable response to a simple piece of art. If you read this article, and you still can’t figure out why smart, creative people want to leave China, then you definitely need to improve your reading skills. To live in constant denial that humans are equipped with genitalia is a truly sad state of affairs. And as for the person who “strongly suggested human flesh searching” the artist, it is (s)he who should be human flesh searched. It really saddens me to see that the most popular comments are also the most ignorant.

Should you go round labeling people who want fembot caretakers misogynists or is it a matter of free choice then?

If one is not ready to be constructive, then at least don’t tear down artisans who are skilled enough and can network enough to CONTRIBUTE a sculpture, least of all on a misandrist tack.

Art is subjective so don’t say it like everyone thinks so like this – ‘Disgusting misogynist artist’. Ends up being a commentary on yourself instead.

Is this some sort of joke? This cannot be real… Art is subjective and some aesthetics values are taught, but this is complete bullshit. Looks like something sculpted by a cave man 3 thousand years ago, as a tribute to the defecation god. If this is an actual statues that will be displayed in a town, China just lost cool points.

It IS supposed to be ‘caveman-like’ or child-like. That desexualises the work duh. Your lesson in aesthetics for today.

” China just lost cool points. ” I think it was @DRay who lost cool points. (WTF is a cool point??? Too much time at MMORPGs? For this reason, IQ and Mensa are just COMPLIANCE tests to prevent the truly bright or critical thinkers from getting into college. Never doubt your IQ if you don’t get a high quartile and stick to your interests.)

搜狐福建省厦门市网友 said – ” and those who spend hundreds of thousands to buy them have shit for brains. ”

True for those who cannot afford, but much depends on the greed/generosity of the artist, who could sell based on appreciation of the buyer rather than for a fixed sum (if a 1000 yuan earner who loves a work very much compared to a dismissive art ‘investor’ worth billions, the artist should give priority to the more appreciative even if the cash is less, that is the ESSENCE of art and should be the criteria for a sale . . . ), the love of the artist for their work (as was stolen here . . . go figure what is being referred to) or the love of the buyer can never be bought.

In fact a good artist should charge no more than a year’s salary of any person wanting to buy a good piece, and always based on the love of the work first and foremost. Art is for everyone but artists must charge equitably so that the poor and rich alike may partake of soul enriching (again subjective) works.

Art must come from a place of ideals not materialism.

      Greed/Bias=Tacky

Never Played a MMOMG before or what ever it is you nerds get off on nowadays…. Mensa and IQ mean absolutely nothing, in reality… most I have met a few 6 Sigmas and Mensa nerds.. Didn’t impress me… Actually, I was more successful than they were… Common sense beats books smarts any day!!! oh yeah one more thing …. are you an artist? I am and art can be poorly made and look tacky!! eg. the shit posted at the top of this page… you just lost cool points for trying to sound smart.

All artists will lose if the sculptor’s work gets hammered some more. Art is subjective remember? Am also, but on top of tied down finances, have not found a proper area for studio/gallery yet . . .

Glad you did well where so many did not, and it is true that the best artists are those with common sense rather than book smarts. To me the sculpture is neither poorly made nor tacky – but . . . eye of beholder etc.., don’t say it is.

Never heard of cool points till now, experience with MMOs notwithstanding – you nerds? Wow careful there, might upset the zombies among them. Not a MMOer myself, so glad to know you don’t MMO too!

Was trying to infuse the forum with value added comments, not trying to sound smart. Saying I was trying to, makes YOU lose cool points :D

    I like the sculpture.

It’s one thing to depend on your kids for support in your old age, but when it is expected regardless of how much you are abused …

This sculpture is totally way out of context. The artist who designed the sculpture must be drinking cheap wine and boning prostitutes.

If this was Huge Hefner with two petite blond twins, that would be more meaningful.

Well, it certainly depicts the Chinese male form… seems pretty tasteless.
