Mengniu Dairy’s Website Hacked After Aflatoxin Scandal

China's Mengniu Dairy company website hacked by Chinese hackers following its aflatoxin scandal.

Several days ago, Chinese dairy company Mengniu Dairy made news when its products were revealed to have been tainted with cancer-causing aflatoxin, reminiscent to the melamine tainted milk scandal in 2008 that ended with the collapse of Sanlu, another large dairy company (and which also involved Mengniu). Mengniu has blamed their carcinogen tainted milk on their suppliers, independent dairy farmers, who fed their dairy cows mildewed or moldy cattle feed, thus resulting in the milk produced containing the aflatoxin.

From Hexun Weibo:

Mengniu: We can’t stop dairy farmers from using mildewed feed, just like the country can’t stop murders] Yesterday, Mengniu Dairy spokesperson Deputy Chief Executive Lu Jianjun said: The reason the milk is tainted is because the feed used by dairy farmers was moldy, but a dairy company can’t control the feed used by dairy farmers. Just like a country legislating that one can’t commit murder but some people simply want to kill people, so what can you do? There is not a single manufacturer whose feed won’t become moldy. This is just an isolated incident, just like how a steamed bun in your home can also become mouldy.

Two nights ago, the official Mengniu company website was discovered to have been hacked…

From Mop:

Truth of Mengniu company website being hacked leaked, SIT team claims responsibility

Mengniu Dairy company is caught in “Cancer-gate”, resulting in Mengniu’s reputation once again being tarnished. Around 11pm on December 28th, netizens of the Mop discussion forum posted images one after another of “Mengniu official website hacked”. Around 11pm on the 28th, when going to the Mengniu official website (http://www.mengniu.com.cn), the situation one sees is indeed as netizens described. The entire webpage has a black background with a note written in the middle, primarily expressing condemnation and anger towards the Mengniu Dairy company’s refusal to take responsibility. At the very end of the text is affixed a signature: “the angry SIT team”, using this to claim responsibility [for the hack].

The content of the note left on the website: [shown above]

Mengniu once strengthened the Chinese people, once made Chinese people proud. China’s own dairy company, now screws over its own people.
Are you a cheat, a cheat, or a cheat? One half kilogram of milk each day, makes Chinese people dead. [This is a play on a Mengniu slogan: One half kilogram of milk each day, makes Chinese people strong.]
Is this what Mengniu are about? I want to ask just how many incidents occurred before this happened.
How many Chinese people you’ve cheated and screwed over.
We are a family, yet you are screwing over your own family members.
Do you have a conscience? Today, your raw materials violate standards, tomorrow its carcinogenic, the day after tomorrow you might as well just poison the milk directly.
Is this the benefit Mengniu is bringing to humankind?
Are you doing right by your dairy cows? Feed problems, shirking responsibility.
Hehe.
So this is what Mengniu Dairy Company is like.
As a Chinese person, you should wake up, and our duty, the duty of millions of netizens, is to make you wake up.
To wake China up.
This is our nation’s shame.

From the angry SIT Team (Simple International Infosec Team) originally SST team (Simple Safety Team).

Comments from Sina Weibo:

胡荣华Howard:

The hackers appraisal of Mengniu is very apt.

我是3838438:

I think doing this is wrong. [Instead, they] should hack the computers of the bosses of every one of Mengniu’s departments, and expose some interesting things! Haha, this SIT isn’t very gei li

雒文奇:

This hacker is very gei li, every day one half kilogram of milk kills Chinese people. Mengniu, you don’t feel ashamed?

ME刘泽仁:

Support, the power of hackers used in this kind of way, I support. Regardless of whether Mengniu is right or wrong, when it comes to these large companies, we must treat them with the principle that its better to mistakenly blame them than to be right and let them go [better to be safe than sorry].

青岛麒竣:

So being hacked means to having the color of the screen changed to black.

mmmm正因为这样:

Go to hell, black-hearted [evil] company!

搞错又要换名名啦_我叫雅思:

China’s most gei li hackers.

犯罪高手骆文康:

Motherfuckers, I’ve been drinking [Mengniu milk] every day, almost 7 years now, motherfucking, fuck

好久不塔:

Didn’t they say the Mengniu milk products sold to Hong Kong are better than those sold in the mainland? This only shows that you [Mengniu] can make better products but intentionally don’t. Mainlanders have cause to boycott Mengniu, and have it be done for.

欢未央521:

We don’t need a China that spends all day clamoring that China’s economy growth is amazing, can hold the Olympics and . What we need is a China where we can eat something without being poisoned, walk on the street without being hit and killed by a car owned by the Li Gang family, ride the train without dying because it derailed, where our children can go to school, where college graduates can get work, where we can afford to see doctors when we get sick. Everything else is nonsense.

条形码记者王正民:

Well hacked, hope Mengniu will go bankrupt/collapse, but so many people will lose their jobs, what to do about that?

占占占咪-:

I swear I’ll never drink domestically produced milk ever again!!!!!

陈年伟:

I encourage Mengniu to go abroad, to Japan, to America, and slowly destroy them!

luvzhan:

Today I’ve looked at this image N times, but this is the first time I’ve actually read what’s in it, and I commend it. Sometimes hackers taking action can be even more powerful and even more effective than public opinion. Maybe the hackers are thinking inside “[怒] You dare screw over the Chinese people, each and every one of you just wait and see [what we’ll do to you] [哼]” Haha.

一路呀美好:

With regards to Mengniu, I don’t feel like saying anything. I just think our people are very irrational, very hotheaded… maybe it’s the sorrow of the people! Because it is entirely possible that there is someone behind the scenes controlling the entire incident. After all, with such a large cake, everyone wants a [bigger] share.

What do you think? Of the Mengniu aflatoxin scandal? Of Mengniu’s response? Do you support the hackers’ action?

Pretty sad excuse given by the company. They can have their own inspectors visit the dairy farmers for regular and surprise inspections. They can refuse to purchase raw milk from farmers who refuse to be inspected. This can be used as an advertising campaign to promote the safety of their product.

Or they can simply pass blame to save face instead of dealing with the problem.

    • Krell

I agree with you, they should at least check their supplier’s product. Or maybe they knew about it, they just give a damn.

      • mr. weiner

Like most things China has good regulations on this sort of thing ,but they are usually “selectively “enforced, through a combination of lack of resources, corruption and guanxi. This is why state capitalism don’t work.
And please before I hear any howls of protest about the state of capitalism in general, I’m not defending it, I just think it is the least ineffecient.

    • Matt Smith

While I would tend to agree with you, the fact is, they are right. They can’t test all the milk because then they wouldn’t have any to sell, and they certainly can’t control the farmer’s actions. They to are restricted by supply and demand, if they start blacklisting farmers who don’t adhere to safety regulations, they will have no milk to sell and eventually go bust. If Mengniu collapses, you can rest assured that the next company that rises to take its place will have exactly the same issues. The farmer’s need a real incentive to produce quality, untainted milk, and until someone (either the big Dairy companies or the government) start providing them with that incentive, things will remain as they are regardless of which companies are selling the tainted milk.

      • whichone

With respect, your arguments don’t make sense.

Milk is a liquid, so taking even a small sample will give results on a large volume of milk, they would have plenty left to sell.

They can’t control the dairy farmers’ actions, but certainly can control their own. Supply and demand doesn’t change safety concerns.

Your justification based on the actions of the non-existent future replacement company is like saying it’s okay for me to rob you because if I don’t, the next guy will do it anyway.

  • staylost

Wow! This company has staying power!

They kill your babies and you still drink their milk.

Now they are just taunting you by seeing how many they can kill with cancer?

Don’t worry, Chinese people will still drink your milk MengNiu!

Attention all of China: this is called sarcasm. While your natural defences do not allow for such rhetoric, what he’s saying isn’t as significant as the result he is provoking in you.

Remain calm, and wait for a sarcasm-proficient Chinese to come to your aid. If you are isolated and in need of nationalism, wave a miniature flag and shout “pump up” until the sarcasm subsides.

      Stay indoors and drink fluids.

      • typingfromwork

Terroir. Please. You know that sarcasm doesn’t exist on the internet. Everything is serious business.

      • Alan

Time to start paying more for imported?

Wonder if coffee creamer is any safer?:(

        • moop

i actually got some French milk a couple weeks or so for 14.95 at BHG. cheaper than mengniu. Devondale (australian) can be bought for around 18 yuan per liter if i remember correctly. about the same price as mengjiu

          • Patrick

Could be fake. First DVD’s, then milk and finally take over the world.

          • KCHSload

18 yuan a liter? I pay 7.9 for a liter at BHG. The cheapest imported band is 15.

    • Irvin

Good thing I quit milk since 2. Better to smoke than drink milk in china.

2 weeks!!?? That wont do you any harm, its carcinogenic not pure risen.

  • Miki

Regarding 欢未央521’s comment, the same could be said of all countries. Think of how much further humanity would have progressed by now if we weren’t spending all our time worrying where our next meal would come from, if we weren’t terrified of falling ill, if we knew that justice for crimes would be served no matter the money or connections…

  • Bunny99

Darn, I drink that stuff. I thought it only had a few heavy metals in it – but now aflatoxin

    Liver cancer isn’t fun!

    • 山炮 ShanPao

relax, this article is scaremongering, it was one batch… in Sichuan… that was destroyed after testing.

      • Alan

So is all meng niu milk on the shelves safe now?

Can you send an article for this shanpao, kind of interested.

I thought it was only one batch too, a green box, saw the vid on youku?!

        • 山炮 ShanPao

Can you speak Chinese? Just baidu any news website the info is all in there. The authorities shit a brick when the details were released and recovered all of the contaminated items from the shelves.

Just like the ‘babies grow breasts’ scandal… this could well be a very well orchestrated smear campaign or like the news says, one batch was contaminated and now its been destroyed. Sure you can find an english language version of these events too. Unfortunately the likes of beeb dont like to put all the necessary details in and would prefer to say something like “china has occupied Tibet since 1951″ rather than “despite the uproar there is no reason to suggest any more than one batch of mengniu (which has now been destroyed) have unacceptable levels of aflatoxin.”

          • Alan

            Thanks for the reply mate!

I’ll have a look around. It’s a bit scary indeed, do you reckon nestle milk powder is safe though?

          • 山炮 ShanPao

Go pick on someone who’s first language is english.

          • Alan

Go pick on someone who’s first language is english.

I wasn’t picking on you, nor being sarcastic. I am genuinely interested, I watched the video report on youku.

I think everybody would care about health, right?

          • White monkey

Hahaha, you said look at baidu news , you must have been dropped on your head as a child to think anything you will find on there or CNN or fox news is truth..

    Soy milk is superior. Discuss.

    • mr. weiner

gives you higher estrogen levels I’ve heard, still, better than carcinogens. Maybe everyone will have to buy their own goat.

  • 山炮 ShanPao

Yes… milk is Mother Nature’s “perfect food” …for a calf… until it is weaned.

Everything you know about cow’s milk and dairy is probably part of a Dairy industry MYTH.

Cow’s milk is an unhealthy fluid from diseased animals that contains a wide range of dangerous and disease-causing substances that have a cumulative negative effect on all who consume it.

    MILK’S BASIC CONTENTS

*ALL* cow’s milk (regular and ‘organic’) has 59 active hormones, scores of allergens, fat and cholesterol.

Most cow’s milk has measurable quantities of herbicides, pesticides, dioxins (up to 200 times the safe levels), up to 52 powerful antibiotics (perhaps 53, with LS-50), blood, pus, feces, bacteria and viruses. (Cow’s milk can have traces of anything the cow ate… including such things as radioactive fallout from nuke testing … (the 50’s strontium-90 problem).

    • David… or Joe

      Holy shit this so much.

    • Joe

Truth! Milk is the perfect food… for baby cows. Not people.

      • Dat Ankle

What are you talking about, milk is the perfect food for human babies too. We should just stick to our own species milks for a certain amount of time…

    • dim mak

      You’re right

PEOPLE SHOULD DRINK PEOPLE MILK NOT COW MILK

      • mr. weiner

Paul Macartney’s ex-wife wanted to start a milk bank for lactating mothers who had some to spare. She was going to have it turned into cheese…um, maybe that crazy one-legged bitch was thinking a little too far outside of the box :P

    • Dr_Barefoot

AND… adults lack the enzyme lactase, needed to digest milk, the production of which decreases in the body as we age.

Lactase is actually originally present in cow’s milk itself, except that thanks to the sterilization technique traditionally used by the industry – they flash-heat the milk up to 100 degrees celsius, killing everything in it, friend and foe – it’s absent from milk sold in supermarkets.

Stay clear, milk is one of the many ways in which they charge you for eating useless/harmful stuff

(unless you can find freshly milked milk that’s not been sterilized)

  • typingfromwork

Still? Really? They can’t control their sources… or test batches as they come in. Right.

As a protest taking down their website is pretty weak, but whatever.
