Migrant Worker Unhappy with Toe Transplanted Onto His Hand

Migrant worker goes to hospital for help, has toe attached to his hand

Li Zicheng, a migrant worker from Sichuan Province working in Guangdong Province, recently encountered a very big headache: Guangdong Huizhou Huiyang Bone-setting Hospital had cut off one of his toes and then transplanted it to the part of his hand where a finger had been missing. It’s been almost a year and a half, but the hospital still ignores him while relevant governmental departments have yielded no results, unable to take measures against the hospital, unable to deal with medical accidents. This set of photographs was shot on September 23rd, 2011. [click to enlarge]

Li Zicheng arrived in Huiyang District of Huizhou in 2009 to work for a local factory, and had a work accident in April 2010 where an electric saw injured his right thumb. He was promptly sent to Huiyang Bone-setting Hospital.

Li Zicheng explained to this reporter: “After the accident, the factory sent me to the hospital. The hospital doctor tried repeatedly to persuade me to do transplant surgery. The doctor wanted to cut one of my toes off and transplant it onto my hand where my finger was lost, having it become my thumb. At the time, I asked the doctor if my original injured thumb could still be used. The doctor said there were two options. However, in the end, he adopted transplant surgery. At present, the [new] finger has not yet completely recovered, while the foot from which a toe was cut often aches very much. Nobody in this hospital has expressed any concern. To find out the reason, I’ve gone to many other hospitals, and found many medical professors. What I don’t understand the most is that many experts in other hospitals are all saying that there will be grave consequences for my thumb. Huiyang Bone-setting Hospital on the other hand insists that the thumb has recovered. I believe the hospital’s actions and behavior towards patients like me are irresponsible.”

Li Zicheng’s fellow-townsman said: “It’s been more than a year and a half since the accident, and I haven’t seen Li happy since. Everyday he has a long face, and has gone to a lot of places over this medical accident, including hundreds of governmental departments and large hospitals, as well as of course the very hospital that treated his injury. He’s even gone to the Health Bureau over a hundred times. For us migrant workers, we don’t know much about legal and other relevant procedures, but we are humans, humans with blood and muscle. This is clearly a medical mistake/malpractice, so why doesn’t the hospital admit it?”

During the interview, this reporter saw in the Forensic Opinion by The Judicial Expertise Center of Guangdong Province (license number: 4410101) that any lingering problems with Li Zicheng’s thumb reconstruction is directly related to the surgery, constituting Medical Malpractices (level 4), because the problem is fundamentally caused by the medical factors in the surgery.

According to the hospital: “We have connections and will only compensate 20,000 [RMB], [the patient] can file a lawsuit in court.”

Have the doctors gotten to the point where they can’t even tell the difference between hands and feet? What a tragedy!!!

Strongly recommended that the doctor transplant his buttocks onto his head!

Yesterday I saw a post called “why do patients want to hack doctors to death?”… The author [of that post] seemed to not understand. If you really don’t understand, then come look at these photographs. I trust this will give you a very good answer.

What is going on? Yesterday morning I saw a piece of news that a man went a hospital to have a B-mode ultrasound. On the diagnosis was written: the uterus is normal. Is there a bottom line for the degrading work ethics/morals of doctors?

腾讯郑州市网友 财/sun神

Speechless! Does it make any sense to do this kind of surgery? What was once one disabled part of the body has now become two disabled parts. What a cheat!

腾讯绍兴市网友 如鱼得水

Fuck! A bunch of ignorant people who don’t know medicine sowing discord. If a finger is injured and lost, the only way to keep the function of that finger is to cut off one of the patient’s toes and transplant it to where the finger was. This is a medical common sense. The aim is to let the thumb of the patient perform full function. It’s not about being unable to distinguish fingers from toes. Our country could perform transplantation/reconstruction of severed digits as early as the 1960s, and our toe-to-finger transplant surgery at the time was amongst the best in the world. If you don’t have the original finger that was broken/severed off, how can you ask the doctor to reattach it? If you don’t transplant, then the thumb would be lost forever. Then you would really lose all function [of the hand]. When you guys express your views, you’d better check relevant documents/information first. Don’t pretend to be angry when you’re actually ignorant.

There really are so many problems in China these days! How can there be so many things that infuriate people? People’s hearts have all been eaten by the dogs [lost]… In this materialistic society, people have lost their basic human natures, lost the most basic bottom line of being human!

腾讯网友 煇太勆

I’m thinking, he [the patient] should have agreed to the operation before they made the transplant, right?! Otherwise why would the hospital take the trouble of cutting off a toe to attack it to the hand? What more, before such an operation, it must’ve been required that the patient sign his consent, as the hospital would not assume such responsibility for you.

How can there be a doctor like this? I strongly demand that this godly doctor’s name be made public, so he will never be able to work in this field again.

First, i don’t believe this Immigrant worker is all innocent. Yes, it sometimes sucks to Be chinese and it sucks even when one has no other option then to surrender to chinese hospital, medicine and doctors. But maybe the doctor has just a different understanding of work ethics and just wanted to try something new? Why not what the immigrant worker is suppose to do in case something goes wrong? That’s china, and without connections he will spend the rest of his life useless complaining and hopeless tries searching for justice. 1.5 years ? In most of western countries he would already be a compensation millionaire. In addition I don’t buy that anyone of his fellow countrymen actually cares about what has happened to him. They are just concerned that it could happen to them. Everyone who has spend more then a few weeks in china shouldn’t be surprised at all, but that chinese are surprised and shocked just shows how ignorant and selfish their society is. Westerners are selfish and ignorant too ( to a certain point) but that’s the reason we have laws and courts which take care about such issues. Chinese police, courts and laws are useless bureaucracy dominated totaly corrupted instututions, which just dont give a shit. Again, if you have selfish ignorant citizens, you will get selfish and ignorant and corrupted leaders.

  • coala banana

Btw, he has some damn ugly toes. I can’t see anything wrong when a small piece of one thumb is missing. I think he agreed on the procedure and now he is pissed after he saw that he made the wrong decision. Loosing a small piece of a finger is not a major injury and I doubt that the surgery required more then a local anesthesy. What people should be worried about is the poor aesthetic understanding they have, no universal health care and the corruption which comes along in all institutions of their government. We also must put into account the around 50 thousand deaths a year which occure in china based on missing or not following safety standards and regulations. So, one immigrant worker cut his own thumb off by not taking care, not taking security and health seriously, well, fuck him !!! You give them duskmasks to protect their lungs, they don’t use them (except eattot hiding her lip herpes) , you give them working gloves and they keep on working with their bare hands, give them a pair of real workshoes with steel caps and they will complain that they are uncomfortable. Give them real worktables and a chair and you will still find then kneeling and crowling on the floor assambling their products. That’s china, but in case they get lung cancer, something falls on their feet, or they cut of their own finger, then they are quite fast complaining it’s someone others fault and demand compensations. I witnessed this so many times myself, they put themselfs all the time in unnecessary danger. It’s hard to feel sorry for them and after some years why chinese company owners treat their employees so bad, cause it’s fuck or get fucked.

    • Just John

First, haven’t you ever looked at Chinese feet?
I have yet to see anyone with good looking feet…
Of course, I do not tend to watch others feet, but try looking at them around you and you will notice that most of them are ugly (All that I have ever seen anyways).

Sadly, I would agree that most workers do not take the proper safety precautions, and this guy had probably bypassed them, but to be honest, how many companies takes precautions? Some may, but others will ask their employees to bypass them if they prove to be something that slows down or stops the production.

I also agree that he may have agreed to it, and later ended up regretting his decision. The question though is, are medical doctors, who are probably much more highly educated (If they did not by their Pd. D.), really looking out for the patients best interests? I think there is a case here of the doctor neglecting his responsibilities to the patient, but to what extent is unknown.

We do not have the full situation, so can only review rationally what is given, and try to make an educated guess to the missing details.

      • eattot

i agree with you, chinese people do not take care their bodies much. some women they can buy a LV,dress in Gucci, but their face, i have to admit, even what they put on is real, just a pity.

No worries eattot, I think aok completely missed your point, which is why I gave him a silly little saying.

He did not seem to realize you were pointing out how many women will buy expensive things to make themselves appear more attractive, and miss the simple things, like taking care of your feet.

Don’t worry to much about aok, he was just knee jerking and failing to actually read what you were saying. Next time you just need to use a better comeback line.

Try this: Are you still brooding about me calling you fatty in Jr. high? Or was it me stealing your boyfriend that you haven’t forgiven me for?

          • coala banana

aok, how you know that there is a next lifetime ? I mean thats a huge claim ! And how you know(even assuming, for the sake of your argument, that next life exists), how i will be born again ? That are huge claims my friend.

Nearly on a daily basis i FUCK and deny all the gods and all the prophets, all the ghosts and demons, devils, spirits and souls from ALL religions worldwide and as you see i don’t make a big secret out of it. I dont believe in such supersticious nonsense myths from the iron or bronze age, where people had no idea about anything. But what makes me indeed worry are people like you which claim that they can prophecy the future, hear voices, and bow down to an imaginary man in the sky based on ancient myths. Its not people like me who make the word ugly, its people like you, who believe in a celestrial dictatorship and out of fear and feeling unworthy try hard to be moral people. There is a saying which goes that with or without religion you would have good people do good things and bad people do bad things, but for good people to do bad things it takes religion.

Regarding your reincarnation, kharma/dharma crap, I dont give a shit as you can see. Why people like you always like to make a big secret out of life.

Whats wrong with being born – live(more or less) – get sick (or not) – and die. See i am not afraid of living and i am not afraid of dying. I also dont care who i will be burried, if they wish they can feed my remains to the pigs, why care. Live your life now, enjoy it, make the best out of it.

Why you care about pretty faces and how they feel in their hearts. Do you have an ugly face, but your heart is in right place ? good for you ! Does girls with pretty faces have stone hearts ? I dont know and i dont care. But what you should keep in mind is a 3rd option, which is that there might be people out there which have both, a pretty face AND a good heart. What are beautiful people supposed to do ? Feel bad about the fact that they are beautiful ? What is the ugly one suppose to do ? Hide in the closet and feel shame about his/her uglyness ? See, personality and character is something which can be developed, and the usage of soap to clean your hands and the dirt under your finger and toe nails is something everybody can do. Now come out of the closet, go to the supermarket by some soap and a nail clipper, and start to get a life !

          • Tengu

According to Buddhist tradition you yourself will pay for this tirade against her in your next life…in fact she is innocent of everything.

eattot simply agreed with J.J. (who always makes a lot of sense…the prick!), she never attacked anyone, but you feel the need to attack her.

If you ARE a Buddhist, you should be compassionate.

As they say if you see a man being beaten by another man, feel sorry for both.

The man being beaten is paying for something he did in a past life.

The man doing the beating will pay in the next.

            You should know better…

      • coala banana

John, yes i look very frequently at hands AND feet of people. Based on how they look like i make the decision how close i will let them to come by. People which don’t care about their hand and feet and don’t wash them, usually take even less hygienic care on zones of the body which are less visible, thats my theory.

I have to disagree with you a bit, and i hope you don’t take chinese women/girls into account when you talk about that you haven’t seen anyone with good looking feet. I have found, from my international experience, that chinese females, or lets say asian females in general, have mostly nice looking hands and feet. I think that genetical. While i am not a friend if decorating them, cause there is nothing more beautiful then exposing natural beauty, they do have good and healthy looking fingers and toes. Latino girls also have natural healthy hands and feet. So i think that on the good looking hands and feeds chinese females are in the upper level. Males on the other end ? well, what to say, it seems to me that for most of them hygiene is not on the top of their preference list.

Regarding doctors in china, you must take into account the huge dimensions of corruption in the apparatus and the way some (lets hope there are not many) of them achieved their medical degree. I don’t even think its socialisms or communisms fault. I very much sympathize with soc/com, cause i grew up and went to school in such a system and know about the benefits of it and the “normally” great education which comes along with it. I also see some benefits in capitalism, but what I am afraid of is the so called socialism in a chinese way, which is in fact nothing else then pure hardcore feelingless national capitalism, executed in the most ruthless way with no space left for justice for the majority which find themselves on the lower level of income and education possibilities. Its a dictatorship, but not the one for the proletarians, its a dictatorship of the elite, the burocratic apparatus which has spread like a disease in all areas and corners of law, justice and order.

On one side i understand the leaders, cause why they SHOULD give people more rights and justice? Do you think they could expect appreciation from the masses ? Its still china and they are still chinese people, appreciation and understanding of justice doesn’t last longer then it takes to lighten up a cigarette. You have a nation full of selfishness which do nothing else then demand WITHOUT appreciation. Justice is for people which can or have already developed some form of social responsibility towards their fellow man, which have overcome their own regional and cultural differences. Its not an useful tool for citizens where the majority consists of selfishness, arrogance and ignorance, looking out for a unjustified freebee, a red pack, or a way how to cheat the other one first. I think as more one truly experience china, by living and working with them all around the clock, one realize that what they have now is the best they can get and not much more should be given. Justice, same like so many other things must be earned, and based on individuality and demanded by certain individuals which are on the lower scale and wouldn’t give a shit once they climb the ladder a bit. Hypocrisy and revisionism are definitely not keys for demanding more liberty and rights. Lenin has said that nothing is more worse then small capitalists which dream about to become big capitalists. Its BTW, also the reason why so many middle class US citizens seems to take it personally when someone like to tax the richest 1 %, maybe its cause they believe that one day they can make it there. I say don’t give certain people ANYTHING, better take a little bit more away from them from time to time, this way to do them more good.

Can he get a cloned thumb and toe as well?

  • Cleo

I’m not surprised this happened in Guangzhou. It isn’t true that this is a result of new materialism. This is a case of classic retard on the part of the doctor. What ever happened to “first, do no harm”?

In the 1970s, a young girl in a rural village outside Guangzhou had a cavity in one of her molars. Molars are in the back and the charlatan who examined her claimed that the tooth was too far in the back for him to reach – so he took his dental drill and drilled through her cheek to remove the tooth. She now has a permanent dimple and permanent bitterness in her heart.

It’s such a violation that someone gets the social prestige of being a doctor when they commit such acts of heartless violence in the name of practicing medicine. Are these descendants of the Unit 731 “doctors”?

  • Cleo

There should be a charge of intentional mutilation and the appropriate prison sentence should be ordered on the “doctor.” He must not be allowed to hide behind a medical degree. Treat him as the violating criminal he is.

I seriously believe there is a primitive chauvinism at work in many somewhat well-off Cantonese like this doctor. There are normal, sane exceptionally self-controlled Cantonese but they NEVER ever stick their neck out to correct the crazy ones. I use “crazy” as shorthand for nasty, dishonest, resentful and insecure losers who manage by observation to have made a fairly lucrative career for themselves either as dishonest oily lawyers, real estate brokers or other first generation business owners. They get far in their own minds because they stay amongst the less fortunate and feel they are superior by comparison.

They have a strange God complex because they have never been exposed to being in a humbling position yet they are actually in a distressed position and had to cobble together some way to climb out of trouble without any real wisdom or assistance from another person. This gives them an inflated sense of accomplishment. That “doctor” must see humble people everyday and probably talks down to his nurses and junior associates. He REALLY wanted to be right about giving this worker his means of earning a living by reattaching a non-thumb probably so he would have an excuse to write a medical journal article or at least post something. He, the “doctor”, needed/wanted to perform the surgery to show off.

He needs to be taken down. This matter can not die like this. He needs to be removed from his post and made to turn over all his assets to the worker. Are we really saying that a Chinese who had the good fortune to work a white collar job is more important than a laborer? This is China, right? Where the class system has been actively fought over for decades at great cost to the people.

Are we really going to protect someone’s “medical” career when clearly they have NO business being in a position of authority nor do they deserve to have their medical degree.

    • Just John

You know what they say about assumption, they make an ass out of you and umption.

You see to assume much about the doctor, even though we actually hear little about him, and mostly about the trials and tribulations of this worker.

Please, for God sake, quit trying to make an ass out of umption, umption does not deserve this.

    • coala banana

i am always surprised when chinese are surprised when something like this happens. But it makes me wonder about the consequences and solutions which are offered at time.

While i completely agree with most of the things you said, I would lie to question that by setting an example would change anything. Chinese should know that by now. Even you would put this doctor on public trial, free to watch live on all CCTC channels throughout the country, and even you would force all doctors to watch it, and give this particular “doctor” the death penalty, execute him on live TV, for everyone to see, You still wouldn’t accomplish or improve ANYTHING in chinese society or medical work ethics. We both know that the scenario i described would never happen, but we should know by now, you as a chinese, and me as a foreigner with more then 6 years china experience, that it would not help. Thats a fact and is proven every day.

What i found interesting in china, and all my chinese friends agree with it is, that even you punish one for a particular crime, others which do the same crime will just keep on doing it, they would even do it in the same way ! Its the chinese understanding and over estimation of their own personal “smartness”, thinking “fuck this guys was so dumb, can’t happen to me, i am smarter then that”, cheating, lying, up to the level that people get hurt and even die is silently accepted, cause there is this vast majority of citizens which doesn’t give a shit, as long as they are not the victims. There is no solidarity and no public outcry. Look at the baby milk powder sandal, officials and government know from jan . 2008 on what is happening, but kept is under the carpet cause they didn’t want to “disturb” the Olympic games. How many children could have been saved from cancer, during the tolerated more then 6 months ignorance of the problem ? And to no surpass, even they carried out “some” executions after the trial, several other cases were uncovered just 1-2 years later where other companies do the same, and i am sure some still do it. Look at the earthquake and the thousands of death kids buried under what is left of their school buildings. Do you think that construction companies will learn from that, and start to follow safety and security procedures, using real cement and reinforcement (well they charge like they use it) ? But to make more money mix in more sand cause its cheaper. They ALL think they are smart and hope that the earth will not shake and they can get more rich. In front of my balcony, just on the other side of the street, they built new 5 stories apartments, I was able to follow everything from day one. Its ridiculous what they are doing and how they are doing it, half of the columns which are punched in the earth and use to stabilize the building were delivere cracked or broken and broke during the punching process, thats unbelievable. Mind you that this IS and expensive area where i live, the cheapest apartment with just around 60m2 is in the 2-3 million range. I really have the feeling that some people just don’t have the ability to develop something like a learning curve, and even a public execution wouldn’t change a damn thing.

The Germans and Japanese played so many dumb games with their victims to entertain themselves in the name of “science” including amputating without anaesthesia the hands and feet of their victims and attaching the hands to the ankles, the feet to the wrists to see if the feet would naturally attempt the dexterity of hands and vice versa. They really are THAT stupid.

    • coala banana

well i very much doubt that they did that out of stupidity. But i would agree with you when you would think about the reason why germans were and still are so developed when it comes to chemical and pharma industry. Its probably cause they gained enough knowledge by experimenting with other humans, it could be one of the reason. Don’t think that the US, Russia, or China don’t do that. I remember that not long ago Obama and Hillary publicly apologized to the people of a particular south american country by using them for their medical experiments. they even used their own soldiers for experiments, and england used the population of London for certain experiments too. Well Russia and China, no doubt about it too, they are just not much into this acknowledging and apologizing things i guess :-)). Germans just got “famous” about many evil things cause their mistake was that they killed jews, cause as history shows us , you can kill 4 times more russians like Stalin did, or nearly 10 times more chinese like Mao did, and no one would give a crap. Which could prove the thesis that people are not equal, not when they are born and not when they die…..amazing is just that people from the same “race” don’t care when people from their “race” are tortured and killed by members of their own “race”, that must be a unique eastern and middle kingdom thing.

I remember a shiatzu practitioner in italy told me that while western medicine derives by the autopsy of the corpses of prisoners sentenced to death, oriental medicine derives by experimenting on alive prisoners which allowed the chinese to discover links between pressure points, internal organs, etc.

One should always revel in their uniqueness. And not many people can be so different and original. If he were a bit shrewd, and made some plans, he could capitalize on it. Time to join the circus. And he’s a natural for Yang Lan One on One.

After watching “District 9″ I assume that he was bit by alien and now is in the beginning of his transformation into a big cockroach…

There’s no business like toe business!

  • Master Huang

no more Happy Feet, seriously though, the hospital did a bad job, also the hospital could have ignored the transplant and leave it as is without transplant.

  • Gary

Why did the Dr even bother to suggest this procedure? The guy only lost one knuckle of his thumb! That’s no fun, but he can still grip things. I don’t see this bizarre growth of a toe helps him hold anything better and instead messes up his foot. The Dr should have patched up the thumb and told him that’s the best that can be done.

    • Tengu

They did that with me…not the toe thing, just what you said.

Lost a hunk of a finger, too much aggravation and possibility of losing more functionality if they tried to get creative.

Skin grafts, sew it up, done…that was a long time ago (flint scalpel); mine looks a hell of a lot better than this one, actually seeing this…I feel great…this is a hand with a fucking TOE!

I have 99% functionality, but some things are strange, can’t button some cuffs easily, but I don’t have a hand with a fucking TOE.

That reminds me, I have a manicure this Friday!

      • mr. weiner

He’d have to go to a manicurist and pedicurist for the same hand.

        • Just John

As long as it comes with a happy ending, then that is a good thing. Two happy endings instead of only one.

  • hooots

Can someone who actually read everything coala banana said please tell me if he told any stories about him fucking an amputee? Just curious…

    • Just John

Nope, sorry, just psychobabble and soap boxing.
Plus a few rants about why Chinese are rabble.

He has surprisingly not been making sexual references, other than to eattot’s reasons for wearing a mask (mouth herpes according to him), in a couple days.

Maybe he got tired of trolling and started to write his novel in hopes someone will peer review it?

      • hooots

        hahaha
(now I will continue talking about him as if he’s not listening)

That dude has got to be crazy. The amount of time and energy he spends rambling about his may or may not be true exploits completely discredits most of what he says. I think he survives completely on pity fucks.

        Now, let the typing begin!…..

      • Tengu

His posts are like “Ulysses” by James Joyce.

Everyone complains about the length the stream of consciousness, nobody ever really had the time or the stamina to finish it, but everyone agrees it would be a waste of time to put that much effort into it.

Imaging hanging with the guy, you’d never get a word in edgewise…you’d have to shoot him just to be able to finish your lunch.

        • hooots

I used to work with a guy like that. He thought he had the best stories anyone had ever heard and would rant for hours. He complained that I interrupted him once. I took a second and replied, “If you didn’t fucking soliloquy for fucking forever no one would have to interrupt you! Christ on a bike!”

Oh, shit! It might be him!!!!

          Hey coala,
Did you recently quit because everyone you worked with and for complained about you constantly?

I feel sorry for this guy in so many ways, but the first picture says it all.

“What the fuck was I thinking? Sure, grafting one of my toes on there sounds like a great idea!”

“Fuck! Don’t pretend to be angry when you’re actually ignorant.”

    WOW u must be a Doctor !

look this Photo twice and tell me thats normal ? U show the true Ignorance here. U have no heart just because thats the normal (haha) way to do it in ur Eyes doesn’t make it right.

the Fuck is u and Doctors who just want make Money, but dont care the feelings of there Victims.

and about the Functions. First i can see just a small part of the Thump was lost. second does this look functional for u now?

u sick Human hope i never end up in Ur Hospital

    • Just John

I think it was a sarcastic joke, at least that is how most rational people probably read it.

What does this say about you?

      • Tengu

Says he has a high functioning “Thump’.

  • Lincoln

That is what happens when you try to do anything serious in a hospital in China.

  • Sarah

    Wow, this is unbelievable.
The man shouldn’t have said yes to offer in the first place, and why would ANY doctor go ahead with this kind of surgery?!! DANG. ô.ô

  • http://unblockfacebookinchina.com/vpn-in-china Rod

Jesus H. Christ. I guess I’m lucky. I spend some time in a Chinese hospital with a broken leg. I so glad I woke up with two arms and two legs still attached.

PS. I think it goes without saying to AVOID Chinese hospitals at ALL COSTS.

Buy a glove to hide hand.

  • Pippin4242

Actually, the proceedure isn’t just a hack… there was a very successful transplant of the same kind in Bristol, England, a month or so ago. But the patient should have been properly consulted.

  • john

To the idiots defending the doc. If you’d read the article, you notice that after 12 months the surgery has not healed and in fact will not heal. In time the toe/finger will darken, die and need to be removed again. Think before you speak.

  • Brendan

Thumbs up if you like this story! Oh… shit, sorry pal.

  • namrepus

now they know the whereabouts of dr. josef mengele…..!!! he is hiding in a hospital in china… Crazy doctor!!!
