Guard Pushes Man Off Roof For Throwing Bricks At Cars Below

A Chinese man on a roof throwing bricks down onto cars parked below, a security guard tries to stop him.

From Youku & NetEase:

Man on roof throws bricks onto cars below, security guard pushes him off the building

A copy on YouTube:

Can’t see the above video?

The video shows what happened from multiple angles.

The narrator says that this happened around 2 o’clock in the afternoon of April 25th, that the man was “seeking justice” and began throwing bricks from the second floor of a building. The neighborhood security and police rushed to the scene and began trying to persuade the man on the roof to stop. Two hours later when efforts to persuade the man had no effect, the fire department inflated an air rescue cushion (aka jump cushion) below. The neighborhood security guard then, under instructions from the police, pushed the man off the edge of the building’s roof where the man then fell down onto the edge of the jump cushion. Police then apprehended the man and the matter is case is currently under investigation.

If you’re curious about the background music, it is called “Tan Te” and was #6 of Youku’s Top 10 Online Videos for 2010.

Why is it the security guard pushing the person under the instruction of the police…? Can it be understood this way… that if the person died, it would be the security guard’s responsibility… but if the person doesn’t die, then it would be because of the police’s successful instruction… is that it??

网易北京市网友:

This is very key, the police is too cunning. Watching the video, it is clear that the police could’ve handcuffed him and taken him away, yet they risk the security guard!

网易上海市嘉定区网友:

Very strange, what I don’t understand is why with so many people on the ground there is only one security guard on top. They have the time to lay out an inflatable cushion, but no time to go up to the roof.

网易黑龙江省哈尔滨市网友:

Had the security guard pushed a little harder, then he would’ve pushed the brick-throwing man outside of the inflatable rescue cushion. Is a person’s life less important than several lousy cars? The security guard wasn’t capable of finding two people to press the man to the floor to stop him and wait for the police to deal with him?

网易福建省网友:

I’m unable to understand this. Smashing cars is definitely wrong, but the way the situation was handled in the video was inappropriate too. Were the police and firefighters unable to subdue someone holding a brick in their hand? And pushing him down was the only way of subduing him?

网易山东省济宁市网友:

Support the security guard.

网易山东省滨州市网友:

I think the security guard dealt with the situation well this time. However, author [the person who uploaded the video], your title is really bad~

网易江苏省苏州市网友:

How come he didn’t die from his fall? You seek justice, then take your brick and go find the person you need to smash, why smash other people’s cars, those car owners didn’t do anything to you.

网易广西桂林市网友:

If there wasn’t a video, and the person who fell off the building had an accident, coupled with this author’s [uploader's] disgusting report, I bet that security guard could jump into the Yellow River and still not be able to clear his name. This is China’s sadness.

网易上海市闵行区网友:

I don’t understand, can they not forcibly subdue him on the roof? It looks like there many opportunities…

网易北京市网友:

The security guard really deserves admiration, he handled the matter very well.

网易浙江省金华市网友:

If it really was under police orders, then the police have broken the law. No matter under what circumstances, this kind of decision puts the people involved potentially in harm’s way. You can see this in the video, he barely lands on the edge of the cushion, but what if he was slightly off just a bit more? Who would bear the responsibility for that result? What more, the victim was only smashing cars with bricks, did the police not have any other methods?

What do you think? About how the situation was handled? Do you think it was a good idea? A bad idea?

The security guard suddenly pushes the man off the building's roof.

They were too gentle with him. American policemen would’ve used a taser, if not shot right away with a machine gun.

    • http://www.lovelovechina.com Crystal

Hmm… it’s not strange that such comment appears here. It’s strange that you made it.

      • http://mykafkaesquelife.blogspot.com/ Tajpejčan

And what exactly is strange about this comment? I didn’t say they would’ve killed him, but shots might have been fired. I bet nobody in USA would’ve waited 2h in this situation, it’s not like he had a hostage or a gun in his hand, he was throwing bricks. I just pointed out a possible the different approach in a different country.

        • Just John

In which you apparently know nothing about?
Police in the US would have shot him with a machine gun?
Police can only use lethal force if their life is in danger.

That is why they have tasers, rubber bullets, etc, non lethal means to subdue a suspect.

          • http://www.chinageeks.org ChinaGeeks

Also, police in the US carry semiautomatic handguns, not machine guns (with the exception of special SWAT units…but why would anyone call a SWAT team for what amounts to a vandalism/destruction of property charge?)

    • vince

umm no. They might have tased him but I seriously doubt they would use deadly force when there is no direct threat to human life. Shooting someone for throwing rocks at cars in the US would probably cause a shitstorm of epic proportions.
On the way this situation was handled, I would have to say that the situation could have been diffused in a less idiotic way.

    • Chad

Taser? More like a good ol kick in the face.

    • Alikese

They would tase him to prevent having to push him off of a roof and hoping that he lands on an inflatable mattress.

If you think that they would just open fire on someone throwing rocks at cars you’ve been watching too many Michael Bay movies.

  • George

sofa??? ok, by the way i can think of at least 100 better ways to deal with that problem…

The crux of this article is the abuse of power by the police. Also; corruption.

    • Ray

      Flow of thought:

Trying talking them out of it (least effort),

if above fails, just push him off the building!

Whatever happened to the usual police beat downs?

  • Irvin

My next business idea, sell tranquilizers to the government, or taser. I really don’t why they can’t just knock the fucker down on the roof.

Needless to say, even if this asshole die no one would missed him. But the humanitarian side of me still wish a better way to resolve the problem.

Punch the fucker in the face then drag him down the stairs. Tie him up bondage style and drag him away.

Sigh, it’s really ironic, security guard was too rough at an Andy lau concert hitting fan with a baton. And now they too soft on someone that deserve the beating.

China!!! WHAT THE FUCK is wrong with you!!!??????

  • Muay Thai guy

As with most things in China: most improbable and impractical of all solutions, the more I think about this the weirder it gets.

  • Nathan

“its only because he was black”

  • 柴纳闷

So many idiots here. It took that long because the guy threatened suicide if the police got anywhere near him. I know the place. They used to just send a old lady with bound feet up to the roof. She had commanded such great respect that the idiot would have just knelt down in front of her. Unfortunately she died last year.

    • Ray

Not sure if he actually did make that threat but the security guard was pretty close to the dude for the majority of the time, pulling him back several times. Plenty of opportunities to drag him back with 2-3 people. (there were at least 2 people there)

  • John Wayne

They should have put a major ass whoopin on this idiot throwing bricks. American police would taser or shoot since he has deadly weapons (bricks). Society should not tolerate idiots throwing bricks at cars and people. A brick IS a deadly weapon. China has a over population anyways. So there should also be a more stern and swift justice.

    • Boris

Bricks?!?! If those were Audis I’d give him a f..king bazooka!!!

  • Of Canada

Will we find out later that he is defending his property rights and his apartment is being seized for demolition?

    • cs

right… and that gives you the rights to destroy other ppl’s properties and potentially harming innocent ppl. Being poor isnt an excuse to act in a way that harms other people.

      • Curren$y

And meanwhile he gets pushed off the roof LOOOOL

      • snicka

HMM, but being rich and powerful is an excuse to harm other people.

      • Boris

Yes it is. F..k with someone’s property or their honour -expect them to f..k you up. Could well be a very good reason for his actions…

        • Rick in China

Confusing reply. He is the one fucking with other people’s property, and got fucked up as a result. I don’t see any information or reason to suggest he’s “defending” something from the various cars.

  • Ray

Although not the most common solution to the problem, I must admit that it is effective. Not much room for error either….

If done in some other countries the ‘victim’ might due for some mental trauma or something, but he probably won’t have much say in china.

  • MadeInChina

This the new Jackie Chan movie?

  • Ethan JRT

This was such a weird process to watch on video. I feel like a solid punch to the face (while the guy was in the middle of the roof and hadn’t yet picked up a brick) would have done the trick.

In my country the police would block off several roads for a half km ratios. send 100′s of officers and snipers to the scene to stand on the roofs of surrounding buildings. One heilcopter would be deployed. 5 ambulances, 3 fire trucks. All surrounding buisness would be shut down, workers told to go home. News helicopters would arrive and the CBC would have a ‘breaking news’ story canceling out Oprah. This would continue for 9 hours until the brick-throwers wife arrived. The police would hand her a megaphone and talk him down. They would escort him to the hospital for mental examination. The bill to the city would be over 2 million dollars. In China cops imitate Mel Gibbson in Leathel weapon by tossing him off the roof…. I love China.

      LOL! it’s really true~

it’s also very interesting to notice the thinking is different in two countries that, in China, most people will hold sympathy for the crazy, because he represents the poor people, wishing to bash the cars of “rich people”, so Chinese most probably will criticize the security guards or the police, who are usually the “bad guys”.

Why taking the comment about the machine gun so seriously? Obviously joking. And yes, american police would probably have just taser-ed him. If not tackled and arrested.

Actually in America or CANADA he would have been handled with kid gloves. Liability is real back home and the Police are not above the law at all in public cases like this. In fact the guy could sue for mental trauma of being pushed off of a building, even if not physically hurt.

  • tam

why cant people here lear to subdue? knock him to the ground, get him in a lock, over power him and then cuff him…….jesus! In any other country they would have sent cops up there with a stun gun and then thrown him in the back of the police van without risking his life. Joke!
