2 Young Men Kneel Before Dead Dog For 1 Hour In Suzhou

Young man in Suzhou kneels on the cold ground before a dead dog he had accidentally hit and killed.

From Sohu, QQ, & Mop:

In Suzhou, two youths forced to kneel for one hour on the street before a dog they had accidentally hit and killed

Summary: Two young men driving a green postal van accidentally hit and killed a pet dog while driving past a building; facing the dog owner’s demand to either pay 5000 yuan or kneel before the dog for 1 hour, the two young men chose to kneel after being hit. After the police arrived, the young men and the dog owner said they have already privately settled the matter and do not want the police to get involved; About 1 hour later, the dog owner carried away the little dog’s corpse, and after being helped up, the two young men left without a word…

An old saying says: “Men kneeling is gold [men should not casually kneel down].” However, the day before yesterday, while traveling, a van accidentally hit and killed a pet dog. Witnesses say that when faced with the dog owner’s demand of either compensating 5000 yuan or kneeling down before the dog’s body for 1 hour, the two young men in the van, unable to afford the compensation amount, and after being beaten, chose to kneel down. What more, once they knelt down, it was for 1 hour, and no one amount of persuasion could persuade them to get up before the time was up.

This pet dog was accidentally hit and killed by the young man kneeling before it.

At the scene:

Having hit and killed a small dog and without money to pay compensation, the driver was forced to kneel

With the guidance of someone who knew what happened, this reporter found the scene of the incident —- in front of building 62 of the Mabanghuayuan neighborhood. This reporter could see that this happens to be an intersection, and that there are quite a lot of vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

A man who refused to give his surname said that at around 12 the day before yesterday, as two young men driving a green postal van passed by building 62, a small dog rushed out from building 62′s hallway. It happened very suddenly, and I imagine the driver also did not see the little dog running out,” this person said, and according to his estimation, the postal vehicle’s speed was not very fast, only about 30-40 km/h, and absolutely did not intend to hit the small dog.

After the accident happened, the two young men in the van got off to see what happened, and at this time, everyone discovered that the small dog had been run over and killed.

“After the dog had been hit and killed, several people who heard what happened rushed down from building 62.” Mr. Guan just happened to be passing by, and says he very clearly saw what happened. He said, the several people who had rushed down claimed that they were the dog’s owners, and amongst them as a man, about 20-years-old, who was very angry after seeing the dead dog, and got into a fight with the young man who was driving.

Mr. Guan said that several people came down from upstairs

[They] demanded that that young man immediately produce 5000 kuai, otherwise he was not allowed to leave. “The dog owner said the dog cost 4000 kuai, that they have raised the dog for some time, so they wanted the driver to pay an additional 1000 yuan, for a total compensation amount of 5000 yuan. Where are the two young men supposed to immediately get that much money? Hearing the young man say that they don’t have the money, the dog owner then demanded that the young man kneel for an hour as compensation.”

The young man who wanted money even kicked the young driver, and perhaps feeling helpless after being kicked, he knelt down,” Mr. Guan said. The other young man seeing this also knelt down with him.

According to an auntie [older woman] who witnessed this, the two young men persisted to kneel in the cold wind, her husband even ran over to persuade the young men [to get up], but with no effect. At this time, she called the police, but after the police arrived, the young men and the dog owner said they’ve already handled the situation privately, and don’t want the police to get involved. About an hour later, the dog owner carried away the little dog’s body, and the two young men were helped up but left without saying a word.

Reaction:

Many netizens believe the dog owner had crossed the line

The Suzhou “human kneels before dog” incident also aroused a lot of controversy online. A lot of netizens made posts and comments on the internet expressing various perspectives, engaging in “verbal arguments”. This reporter found that some people sympathized with the two young men who knelt before the dog, condemning the dog owner; but there were also people who sympathized with the person whose dog was hit and killed, supporting the “kneel to the dog” demand. This reporter collected some netizen’s comments:

卑微的喷壶:If it were up to me, I would choose to kneel! Actually, this incident only shows one thing, which is that people these days lack tolerance/forgiveness. This goes for the dog owner as well as the young men who knelt down.

huawuque07: Is it that some people are too arrogant, too overbearing? Or is it that some other people are too cowardly, lacking will? This requires our entire society to reflect upon.

星夜1219: This world is really too crazy.

遗失了千年: Simply idiots who have run into a crazy person. You can refuse to kneel. Just let him call the police.

愤怒的天蝎: The dog owner should kneel with them, as a guardian who neglected his duty [to his dog].

网友乙: Humans and dogs should be regarded differently.

网友丙: Why not call the police? Is the dog owner not responsible at all? Where is your leash?

苏州海之澜: What this dog owner trampled upon was not their dignity but the dignity of their kind [dignity of people]. One should be modest, to be reasonable and forgiving/compromising. If you have the money to raise such an expensive dog, then you don’t lack the money to buy another one.

Reporter interviews the dog owner

What to do if you have no money to pay compensation? Kneel and we’ll call it even then!

After the incident, a Jiangsu television reporter happened to pass by the scene and went to investigate this “humans kneeling before a dog” farce. This reporter found a relevant video news report on Suzhou Net, where the dog owner and the television reporter had this exchange:

Reporter: If he hit the dog, why not just pay compensation, why does he have to kneel here?

Dog Owner: He won’t pay.

Reporter: Why?

Dog Owner: No money.

Aside: Because the other side says they don’t have money, the dog owner demanded the car owner to kneel before the dog for 1 hour and their debt will be canceled.

Dog Owner: I’m not forcing them to pay money, nor asking them to do anything.

Reporter: Just asking them to kneel here?

Dog Owner: Yes.

Reporter: And if they kneel, then they don’t have to pay money, right?

Dog Owner: Yeah! If something happens, it has to be resolved, right?

A video news report:

There were over 40,000 comments on the Sohu article itself.

Comments from Sohu:

小皮屁屁:

Men kneeling is gold. Dog owner, you crossed the line, this is absolutely immoral/unethical [unreasonable].
The incident happened suddenly, so the driver must not have had time to avoid [the dog]. Since it happened nonetheless, proper methods should be used to resolve it. That the dog owner demanded that they kneel severely violates his rights. The young guy should use the law to protect his rights, and the dog owner should apologize.

otocom:

The dog owner’s moral/ethical upbringing is very poor, this is too wrong. It is not as if the small dog was hit and killed intentionally. Compensation is deserved, but you shouldn’t ask that they kneel. Young man, you can use legal channels to protect your rights.

搜狐辽宁省沈阳市网友:

This dog owner was using his position to bully others. Human flesh search this garbage, everyone criticize him to death!

8e26ddd403ce36b6:

The problem of people’s morals/ethics these days should get more attention.

搜狐手机网友:

If it were me, I’d just run. It is just a beast. You kneeling down does not only make you lose your own dignity, it also loses face for your parents.

搜狐湖南省邵阳市网友:

If it were me, I would just beat up the dog owner.

搜狐北京市网友:

At most towards one’s father and mother, but towards a dog also? What kind of morals/ethics is this!?

搜狐手机网友:

That is a car crossing, not a dog crossing. Strongly demand that the dog owner pay the car wash fee, the startling fee, and the fee for a Taoist priest to get rid of the bad luck all totaling one hundred thousand yuan. If no money, then kneel before the car for 20 hours.

txsdnso:

This is just how Chinese people are, always thinking that human life is more valuable than animal life, never thinking that humans are just an animal too, and that there are only humans speaking here [whereas if animals were involved, they would disagree]. So, those here loudly criticizing the kneeling, loudly criticizing the dog owner for being so ignorant + selfish + poor character + being no better than a pig or dog, they don’t understand that Heaven sees all life as equal, and are lousy people as well. This kind of person will sooner or later do something that harms society, and afterward will say it is no big deal. And what more, they account for no small portion of the population, so I finally know why Chinese people are so uncaring, because of these kind of people. Another problem: The lack of legal recourse! If the dog owner could more easily and accessibly get just handling from the law, then he would choose this seemingly extreme and unfair method. After reading this, I can only sigh. Society’s sadness, Chinese people’s sadness.

老羊吃嫩草:

I don’t think the dog owner’s actions were wrong. The dog was his property, and the dog was run over by this person, which is like his property being destroyed/ruined by them, so according to reason, he should ask them to compensate him. If they have no money, then what’s wrong with using a method of compensation they can accept? Is it necessary for so many people criticize/curse dog owners, to curse the wealthy? Do poor people not own/raise dogs? Don’t almost all families in the countryside raise dogs, and even though they eat leftovers, [their families/owners] would just let you run them over, right?! These two young guys didn’t do anything really wrong either. True men know when to stoop or stand, and in the future will accomplish great things.

lxc_1966:

Men kneeling is gold, 5000 yuan per hour. If kneeling down got one money, I bet a lot of people would fight to kneel down. This is society, how do you want to change it? What are you!?

搜狐四川省成都市网友:

I am a dog owner too and this matter can’t be only blamed on the person who hit the dog. Who told you to go out without leashing the dog? The dog may not be that smart, but does its master have to be so stupid too?
He hit and killed the dog, so of course he should pay compensation, but it doesn’t have to be like this. If he has no money, he can help the dog owner do something, help bury the dog. Anything would be much better than this ridiculous thing.

Poll

Do you think it was wrong for the dog owner to request that the young men kneel before the dog for one hour instead of paying monetary compensation?

What happen to a dog :( i don’t understand it.

  • Xero

Not sure what to think of this.

    • Jon

Then let me help you: dog was not on a leash, near a city road. Dog ran into the road, because the dog is not so smart as to connect cars to injury and death. But you know who should have been smart enough to figure that out? The negligent and evidently self-righteous pet owner who failed to adequately safeguard his little friend.

No compensation, no kneeling, at most an “I’m sorry this happened but you should take better care of your dog.”

  • Bo Wang

Dog owner at fault, but the driver and passenger deserved it for being such beta males.

    • Brent

      “beta males”?

      They were postmen.

Postmen are supposedly dog-averse, but not this dog-averse!

  • Brent

Let’s face it, that guy was old and he loved his dog. They killed his dog and he was upset. At the end of the day though, the dog is just a toy, a product like everything else in China.

Let me put this in terms that some of the younger Chinese might understand. You are walking in the road when you drop you PSP/i-Pod/Cell Phone, and some runs over it.

You would be like, “That was my i-phone! I loved that phone every day since the day that I bought it. I accessorised it myself, and no it’s gone!”

You would probably make them get down on their knees too and make them pray to Steve Jobs so that the i-phone might get reincarnated.

Personally, I think that the punishment was apropriate and very wise. It’s not all about money! It makes them think about what they have taken away, the pain they have caused the old man.

    • Bottle

Your fault for dropping it in the first place :) Also the man was young too
“He said, the several people who had rushed down claimed that they were the dog’s owners, and amongst them as a man, about 20-years-old, who was very angry after seeing the dead dog, and got into a fight with the young man who was driving.”

  • dude

This wouldn’t have happened if the owner didn’t let his tiny rat run around the streets. After all, who lets their dog run around the streets and not expect accidents. The kneeling men are the victims, and also very dumb for that matter. They should have called for police intervention.
P.S.I have always hated small dogs. I’m more of a shepherd, lab or doberman guy.

  • artemis

For once the announcer is HOT
That looks like an expensive dog, ( no idea what breed) and the owner seems genuinely emotional about the whole situation. Kneeling isn’t too much of a deal, but kill someone’s dog in the USA by accident and you’re looking at a $10 mil lawsuit.

    • Hongjian

“Kneeling isn’t too much of a deal”

Actually it is. Kneeling is pretty much the last remaining thing the otherwise moralless Chinese people have as sign of dignity.

Demanding two grown men to violate their dignity for a dog is pretty fucking shit.

I would have waited for the police and the law to solve this problem.

  • MadeInChina

Its a dog ffs…eat it and get on with life.

    • vince

      damn that was funny.

    • bando

That’s what my father inlaw did when he struck down a dog while driving last year. No joke.

  • Lemming

This is ridiculous. If it was an unavoidable accident on the part of the van driver and he wasn’t speeding, drunk, etc. then the idea of ‘compensation’ is a joke. For what? For having an accident? The driver did nothing wrong or illegal. The fact the dog got run over is SOLELY the responsibility of the dog owner who shouldn’t have let his dog run around loose. This is unfortunately another pathetic example of someone (in this case the dog owner) blaming others for his own mistake and falsely demanding compensation.

The only one who should pay compensation is the dog owner for illegally assaulting the driver.

    • john digmeme

Cosign your comment, totally agree with every single point you make.

-Driver wasn’t speeding [dog was speeding]
-Driver was in his lane, moving with traffic [dog was unleashed moving across pavement perpendicular to foot and car traffic]
-Owner assaulted driver for own mistake.

Unfortunately, it is very difficult to judge how I myself would react in the posties position. If I had no money, the prospect of going up against a wealthier opponent in a Chinese court of law would seem daunting – receiving the chance to get out of the mess for an hour of time seems like a smart choice. Let’s be realistic.

  • Spanky

I guess his Dad wasn’t Li Gang.

  • uDL..

i think this is a very nice example for the bastards out there that doesnt treasure animal’s life. what if it was a baby crawling? i mean like what if? a child that was out picking his toy up? this is not crossing the line at all. this is a very big step forward. people who say that this is crossing the line are just fuking cowards without brains. all drivers should be careful and be aware of all living things on, or even not on the street.

    • paxman

How the fuck does a dog diving under someone’s tires equate to not treasuring life?? It doesn’t matter if it’s an animal, a baby, or someone’s iPhone. If the car can’t stop in time, it can’t fucking stop in time. You figure somehow these guys should have altered the laws of physics to avoid killing it?? In the West if someone jumps in front of your car and you are not able to stop, you ABSOLUTELY are NOT at fault… so long as you are following the law with regards to operating that vehicle. ie. not speeding, valid drivers license, not intoxicated, etc.

I am always surprised at the Chinese need for compensation in every situation. Even those people that agreed the dog owner was at fault, still insisted that compensation was required. Very strange to me. If I fuck up, I expect to man-up and take full financial responsibility for my actions/inactions. I just can’t wrap my head around the Chinese way…

    • Sunni

I don’t say this often to strangers on the internet… but your view is pretty fucking retarded. Did you not read the article/news report at all?

    • bando

And if it is a baby crawling out infront of a oncoming vehicle, everyone would say that it is the negligent parent’s fault for not keeping an eye on the infant.

Ironically, there was an article here somewhere where chinese mothers keep their babies on a leash to keep them out of harm’s way.

    • brotherrivercrab

Yes, just search for “frivolous lawsuits”.

  • The Enlightened One

The man should be taking better care of his dog. If he can afford that stupid little coat then he can afford a leash in downtown Suzhou.

Although, the two men were willing to kneel and couldn’t be persuaded to stand afterward.

    Bottom line…

Watch your damn dogs, and pick up their shit after they do their business. My place is China is surrounded with dog shit… well I assume it is because I see people walking their dogs. But in China, you NEVER know.

  • brotherrivercrab

The dog was seen petitioning the central government last month.

    This was no accident.

    Too soon?

    • mankouzanghua

hahaha! and you know what else? based on the photographs, this accident could not have happened as described. first of all, there is not enough blood, and the dog’s clothes appear intact. based on the physics of transfer of momentum and past car crashes I’ve witnessed, this dog would have been hurled several city blocks.

      • Ace

        LOL

        you guys,

        you guys.

  • Regina Rae

If someone thinks that making the two men kneel was wrong or immoral, then I have to question this person’s morals and their understanding of the word “wrong”

Instead of focusing on the fact that a man’s pet (which is also a living thing with a heart and emotions) was just killed, they are more appalled that these two men had to kneel. To them this is crossing the line. Why? Because it’s losing face for them and stripping them of their dignity of course. You know, these things the Chinese value so much (apparently more than a living thing) But believe it or not, I doubt the man asked them to kneel so he could strip them of their dignity. He asked them to do so because 1. They said they didn’t have the money to compensate, and 2. By kneeling before his dead dog, it shows that they are deeply sorry for what they’ve done, and they pay their respects. This was what the man wanted. At that time he probably couldn’t care less about their dignity. He just wanted them say sorry pay him back SOMEHOW. Christ, for a country that has very little dignity and lacks common morals they sure do have a lot to say about it.

Reading the comments left by netizens, I couldn’t believe that some actually had a problem with this. People need to understand that it wasn’t just a dog. It was a PET. A pet that belonged to someone who cared and loved it. But more importantly, it was a life….But now that I think about it, I don’t know why I was surprised because it’s no secret that the Chinese have little to no care about animal life. I guess in this case it’s normal for them to think men kneeling for an hour was more shocking and more immoral than them running over a living creature and killing it.

And China wonders why they’re the butt of every joke.

    • brotherrivercrab

I’ll tell you what I think is wrong –

The dog owner’s own carelessness caused the death of his pet, then he proceeded to blame someone doing NOTHING WRONG BUT DOING THEIR JOB DELIVERING MAIL. Why should they compensate the dog owner with money?

If anyone should be kneeling down it’s the owner of the dog.

    • Bo Wang

It’s just a pet. Take a chill pill, ocean devil.

    • mankouzanghua

how do you function in everyday life without understanding the concept of “culpability”? nowhere in the article does it suggest that the driver was negligent. do you believe people should be punished for events that are beyond their control? i doubt it. instead, i think you are just taking anything you can and trying to spin it in a way that fuels your idiotic tirades against China.

      • don mario

if that was truly the case then thats that dudes fault. i just find it hard to believe when i know how careless the driving is in china, to human or animal, they dont give a fuck who they mow down.

    • Duchemin

I agree, except about your last sentence.

    • don mario

i agree, they got off lightly.. could payed in much worse ways.

How soon before the flies arrived? Do I believe this story in the same world as where Chinese people allegedly run over human beings without remorse?

    • bando

Indeed. And they reverse over them just to make sure they are dead since deaths are cheaper to compensate than injury

  • Irvin

I kind of like it. take one hour out of their day to contemplate what they’re reckless driving caused. Most people in China drive really really aggressivly. Maybe they will be more careful next time. When my mother in law in China drives. . I keep thinking how if she was driving that way in USA, she’d very soon become the victim of road rage or even get shot. The way she will go into bike lanes or drive up onto the sidewalk and lay on the horn as if she was the most important person in the world.

way to assume it was their fault just because “most people in China …” according to the witness, the truck was going about 18 – 25 mph, and this did not seem fast for the area.

  • baasbabelaas

As much as I love dogs, if that dog was not on a collar at the time it ran out into the path of oncoming traffic, and I was driving at a moderate speed and hit it, I would feel no obligation to pay the driver anything.

I would try to save the dog in any way possible, but I would certainly not pay ANY money to an irresponsible, abrasive owner.

If necessary I would call the coppers. The Chinese don’t like the coppers being called and it usually buttons them up, fast like.

Dogs beeds to be on collars in urban areas where there is traffic – one of the basic rules of dog ownership.

  • Jake

I honestly dont see the problem with them kneeling. It is a sign of respect for the the death of a good friend and companion. I would have kneeled without hesitation. 5000yuan for one hours “work” is a good “paycheck”. You all say that he can just buy another one, but its not just like that. You have feelings for you dog, it cant be bought for money. I think the reactions in this thread is just showing the lack of respect and compassion for animals in general in China.
Is it really so hard for a chinese man to kneel? Is it so much of a face loss that its better to pay 5000yuan?
If the dog was running into the street without a leash its different, but still i like the whole sign of showing respect and honoring the friend that passed away.

  • Lily

From one account, the lady says the dog ran out. The vehicle was going 30-40 km/hr. I assume they were driving on the road. If that’s all true then I don’t blame the drivers. They don’t owe him money or an hr long of kneeling. Sorry for the loss though since I’ve been through it too.

In the U.S. if you kill a dog by accident, all you owe is the replacement cost for the same breed… Dogs, even though loved like family members, are considered property.

Here’s $100 for your mutt. Sorry!

    • Shanghairen

Not true–you owe nothing. Where are you getting this shit? I know a few people whose dogs have been run over and they never asked for anything. Dogs tend to run into the street without looking both ways and get killed. Unless it’s intentional you can’t really fault the driver. But this is China and there’s no logic to these things.

      • anon

Kids also tend to run into the street without looking both ways and get killed. We still have wrongful death lawsuits. I’m not trying to argue for either side, but I am curious how courts of law and courts of public opinion would decide if this was a kid instead of a dog. What arguments would each side make? For example, would they say the drivers didn’t drive with due caution or awareness of their surroundings? I think we can all appreciate how messier the rationalizations would be if it wasn’t “just a dog”.

        • maja

the rights of dogs and children are on different levels. while I agree that the law should enforce punishment for cruelty against animals, would you really treat an accident that leads to the death of a dog as one that leads to the dead of a kid?

  • LOL

depends, well maybe thats what they offered, but if the owner asked me to do it, i would prob say sorry, kneel for a bit because the dog was also a living thing, then i would just leave.. like hey im so sorry but bye…

no one forces me to kneel for 1 hour like a stupid ass..

  • gabriel

moral of the story: keep your dog on a leash

im also pretty sure the posties don’t owe anything to the dog owner as it was an accident out of their control?

  • Carl

If the owner, either man or woman, is insensitive enought to treat a fellow human being as such, I can’t imagine what horrible treatment the dog could have went through.

Yet, I have no problem imagining any other Chinese person doing something of this magnitude. I think this says a lot.

I live in China and I know, ppl drive just too fast,
this kind of things happens a LOT and nobody gives a shit,
if this was a homeless dog or cat its just like a plastic bag floating in the air, nobody cares…

China dont have any law that protects animals and I’m happy to see that at least there is ONE single man can make a Chinese irresponsible driver to kneel down as a punishment for killing a being.

    • bando

I wouldn’t go so far to call them irresponsible. Said irresponsible drivers wouldn’t agree to losing dignity like this.

Another thing i didn’t like was, correct me if im wrong, was how 20 people came rushing out of a nearby building to claim ownership and compensation for this poor animal’s death.

  • chinamark

Sort of looks like a toy, doesn’t it?

  • Dan Danger

China’s lack of true compassion for people is shown in the total lack of comapssion for animals. I had a student who told me of how she had a dog she raised for years only to come home one day to find it missing. When she asked her mother where her dog was she, without batting an eye, said the girl’s uncle said the dog was fat and wanted to eat it. THe girl’s uncle killed and ate her dog and laughed at the girl’s tears over it.

With such disregard for dogs I am not surprised when I see old peple crossing streets nearly ran over by car owners who refuse to stop their cars just for some old stranger.

People here cannot drive or ride bikes. They are reckless and callous, only caring for themselves.

    • hooots

      Holy shit man. That’s crazy.

  • bando

What a rare sight to see drivers being sincere for causing the death of an animal, altho stupid for not seeing that it wasn’t their fault. Either that or being too pliable by the overbearing pet owner.

Lock your stupid little teddy-bear dog up then! Geez, people here always want something for nothing.

something for nothing? firstly, they killed the dog. chinese people’s driving is atrocious. their care of animals is not much better but dogs are pretty good at swerving cars, i have seen dogs walking straight through busy traffic in shanghai just totally chilled out like its nothing. so i would put more blame on the drivers.
secondly, the guy gave them the option not to pay.. they didnt have to give him any money, just kneel on the floor. i would say thats actually nothing(kneeling on the floor) for something.(the guys dog)

All life is valuable, no matter what the species and whether or not it is sentient. While the dog owner is at fault for not keeping a tight leash on the dog in such an area with traffic, he cannot be blamed for asking for some form of compensation as a dog’s life is still a life. The drivers who accidentally killed the dog should be commended for complying, it is not their fault.

At the end of the day, there is no offense where none is taken. Both parties have resolved their issues peacefully, and that is what is most important.

the two men are honorable and compassionate and did what they believed would keep the situation sane and manageable.

Its their mistake and they definitely should pay the price for it.Who cares if they got the intention to hit the dog?Isn’t dogs’ live life?Their life is less worthy than human? They are also God’s creation and they have their right to live on.EVen if the young men knelt a day,a week,or even a year, the dog won’t come alive. And the owner suffered permanent loss. And this loss can never be compensated by money.Stop the bullshit about owner crossed the line and what man’s kneel is gold. All of you are lifeless idiots.

His dumbfucking dog ran into the streets. He should be charged for neglecting his own dog and for endangering drivers!
