2-year-old female child ran over by car, 18 passersby ignore her

Synopsis: October 13th afternoon around 5:30, a car accident occurred at the Guangfo Hardware Market in Huangqi of Foshan. A van hit a 2-year-old little girl and then fled. No passersby reached out to help and then another car ran over her. Over the span of 7 minutes, a total of 17 people passing by failed to extend a hand or call the police, up until the 19th person, a garbage scavenger ayi [older woman], who lifted her up after discovering her but the little girl in her arms was like a noodle, immediately collapsing back onto the ground. The trash scavenger ayi called for help, and the little girl’s mother, who was in the vicinity, immediately rushed over and rushed her to the hospital.

The news report video above has been viewed nearly 700k times on popular Chinese video-sharing website Youku since it was uploaded 17 hours ago and currently has over 6200 comments spanning 210 pages. This story is also spreading on China’s popular microblogging service Sina Weibo in addition to receiving a lot of views and comments on China’s major internet news portals and communities.

In addition to showing the little girl, Yue Yue being run over twice and many of the bystanders who didn’t stop to help her, it also shows that Yue Yue is currently in the hospital in critical condition. Police have already found the second driver but have yet to find the first driver as they were unable to read the first van’s license plate and are calling upon witnesses for help. Yue Yue’s parents are also shown.

It isn’t ignoring, it’s not daring. If one were to encounter a Nanjing judge, one would be screwed.

[Note: "Nanjing judge" refers to the infamous 2006 case of a man named Peng Yu who helped a woman to the hospital after she had fallen only to have the old woman accuse him of knocking her down. The Nanjing judge in that case ultimately ruled that common sense dictated that only the person who hit her would take her to the hospital, setting a precedent that continues only further discourages and reinforces many Chinese people's wariness to help others in similar situations.]

No one wants to cause trouble for themselves. These days, everyone is busy enough with their own matters. To say these people are cold-blooded is a bit too strong. Those who want to criticize them should first ask themselves: Would you have gone to help or not?

kenny44272 [网易广东省江门市网友]:

The driver should die.
The child’s parents have some responsibility that cannot be shirked, especially the mother.
The passers-by who ignored an injured child are as low as cats and dogs, simply unbelievable.
This video shakes the soul of every conscientious person.

网易浙江省杭州市网友:

Don’t blame the passersby, it was a Nanjing judge that killed this little girl.

网易广东省河源市网友:

Those people who walked by are animals. No, even some animals have compassion and would at the very least stop to take a look. Those 18 pigs who walked by should also be arrested and taught a lesson with 15 days [in jail]. Instead it was the waste scavenger ayi from other parts [of the country] who had a conscience.

网易浙江省宁波市网友:

Mencius taught us: The poor must look after themselves, while they rich should spread goodness throughout the world.

With regards to this incident, we first cannot blame the driver, who makes a living with his physical labor. We cannot close our eyes and demand that he bear too much responsibility, as he didn’t mean to hit someone either, and it was definitely very difficult to have noticed [the child], and afterward he was conflicted too, only he was afraid of bearing the burden of compensation and that’s why he chose to run away. I can sympathize with him. After all, running away means still having a life to live while not running might mean his life is completely ruined. Though running away means his conscience is to be condemned, how important is one’s conscience for the rabble where simply getting enough to eat is already a major accomplishment? Not betraying one’s conscience in reality is a kind of spiritual luxury.

The people who passed by are also not worthy of being blamed. To conclude that they are cold-blooded for turning a blind eye is a bit arbitrary. If it were a small cat or a small dog struggling on the ground, I think they would definitely give their attention, even kneel down to investigate the injuries, maybe even carrying them home to nurse them back to health. But when it is a child, everyone pretends they don’t see, it is always like this, almost without exception. This is not about whether or not a person is cold-blooded or not cold-blooded, but it is definitely about there being a very serious problem in society. These days, it is better to be less involved than more involved. Getting involved may very well mean getting majorly screwed. There are really too many of these kind of precedents, and everyone has silently evolved from these observations. No one is more qualified than anyone else to criticize.

和谐评论非处不娶 [网易吉林省延吉市网友]:

No one will say anything if you run over a dog and flee, but this was running over a person… This driver must be severely punished.

兔兔要开心 [网易江苏省南京市网友]:

I wouldn’t necessarily send her into the hospital, but I would definitely make a call, and call for help. For those people who saw and then made a detour around her, have your consciences all been “eaten by a dog” [lost]? May your own children be the next Yue Yue [name of the 2-year-old girl who was run over in the video].

网易山东省青岛市网友 [贱男春浪贱]:

Those above who are saying that our countrymen have become numb, I want to ask simply: What would you do if you ran into this kind of thing? Don’t just blame this or that on this internet post, would you risk being accused of being the perpetrator? Would you be willing to dump your entire family’s savings into the endless vortex of accident compensation? You aren’t afraid of going to jail as the perpetrator? Have you not considered that one moment of greatness could mean your entire family losing their happiness with you? Do you know just how many Nanjing judge [case results] there are? Do you think it is only Nanjing? The consequences of moral turpitude is not something that you and I can rectify. We are just ordinary people. Seeing this kind of thing, I can only describe it as heart-breaking, but I would be numb/indifferent like those 18 people…because I am a normal person!!!

Not even remotely surprising coming from a country whose government runs over people with tanks! The Mother is guilty of child abuse/neglect, and the passerby’s are also guilty! All involved (except old woman who did extend a helping hand), should receive a punishment! Yet another reason for American’s to quit supporting a country that exercises absolutely no perpensity towards humanity!

  • Marx

I know there are several comments saying “Don’t blame these people, would you have helped?” and my response, as a non-national of this country, is: OF FUCKING COURSE! Another human being, friend or foe, liable or not liable, is dying in front of you! Are you so de-evolved that your judgement is clouded by this Nanjing Judge business? Are you so de-sensitised that you do not see this as a tragedy that transcends the law? Have you people forgotten your communist values? The word stems from ‘Community’ but you seem to be ignorant of this…

CANT YOU SEE THE VAN MOVING SO SLOW SO ITS OBVIOUS TO SEE THE ROAD YOUR CROSSING!!!! HOW IS A 2 YEAR OLD CHILD UNSEEN? AND RUNNING AWAY FROM THE PROBLEM WILL LIVE YOU NO GOOD FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. YOU WILL BURN IN HELL!!!! SO STOP EXPLAINING TO THE PEOPLE OR GOING TO THE THOUGHTS OF THE PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THE ACCIDENT, IF THAT WAS YOU AND NOBODY HELPED YOU IM SURE YOU WILL UNDERSTAND THE FEEELING,SPECIALLY IF YOU WONT HAVE ANY LEGS TO WALK WITH FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, EVEN AN UNEDUCATED PEOPLE WOULD HELP,BUT THIS PEOPLE DISGUSTS ME IM NOT SURE IF THEIR EVEN PEOPLE TO CALL TO,ITS JUST SO SAD THAT THIS THINGS HAPPEN IN THE WORLD.

This is a textbook example of the bystander effect. In an emergency situation the amount of help provided by a bystander is inversely proportional to the number of bystanders.

Take the story of Sergio Aguiar:

    Quote from wikipedia:

On June 16, 2008, on a country road outside Turlock, California, friends, family and strangers, including a volunteer fire chief, stood by as Sergio Aguiar methodically stomped his two-year-old son Axel Casian to death, explaining in a calm voice that he “had to get the demons out” of the boy. He stopped at one point to turn on the hazard lights on his truck. No one moved to take the child or attack Aguiar. Witnesses said they were all afraid to intervene because Aguiar “might have something in his pocket”, although some people looked for rocks or boards hoping to find something to subdue him. The fire chief’s fiancee called 911.[18] Police officer Jerry Ramar arrived by helicopter and told Aguiar to stop. Aguiar gave Ramar the finger and Ramar shot him in the head.[19][20] Police officers and psychologists later explained that the inaction of the crowd was justified in that “ordinary people aren’t going to tackle a psychotic,” that they were not “psychologically prepared” to intervene, and that being frozen in indecision and fear is a normal reaction.[18]

There are many other examples. Humans are strange animals.

    • Charlielou

Whilst I sort of appreciate the point you’re trying to make, this situation is very different in that there weren’t any psychos murdering this poor little girl. She was clearly injured and in need of help, and those people chose to be ignorant. Soul-less bastards. Makes me question the minds of the Chinese that have taken over my city to study at the local uni. I can’t help but think they’re all as bad as each other, particularly as people are making excuses for their ignorance and blaming the government. I would hope that whenever there’s a situation where someone requires help and care that I’d help first and question the consequences after.

Cold heartless ppl, you damn right I would put my life on the line for that little girl. And who ever wouldn’t should be ashamed. Lets see who God has mercey on come judgement day. pure sick. have these people no brains? no feelings? if u so petrefied and have no balls could u not at least stop n call for help from somebody who has balls?????????????
all passers by should go to prison!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Susan Mangini

The government and resulting laws in China as referenced in prior posts have created the culture of putting self before neighbor even if it involves saving a life for fear of wrongful prosecution. Is that in ANY way acceptable to you, the People of China? If it is not and, for the record, it shouldn’t be, STAND UP AND DEMAND FAIRNESS! This is the most calloused and inhumane thing I’ve seen in a LONG time, and to simply write it off and toss out excuses for the driver and those who failed to render aid, is not acceptable. A human being, a helpless CHILD, was critically injured and may not survive, and not ONE person, with the exception of the woman searching the trash, gave a good what for or stopped to help. Maybe the reason the woman searching the trash stopped to help is because she’s knows all too well what it feels like to be treated like trash. This is revolting and it is an outrage. China has created a climate of fear through their controlling and overly-intrusive laws. Nevertheless, People of China, return to humanity. This American cries for that precious baby and I cry for the ever declining human species.

  • 2yu8

Unbelievable! I cannot believe the brutality displayed by this country…..the driver and the bystanders passing by…just shows how cruel people are. ASK YOURSELF THE SAME QUESTION…IF THIS WAS YOUR KID, MOTHER, BROTHER, FATHER SISTER I DON’T THINK YOU’D BE SYMPATHISING WITH these Drivers and people who chose to be an accomplice to his actions…. there is absolutely NO EXCUSE!!!

  • harry

[I think that my comment of yesterday does not appear; so here again, with a little addition]

The first time that the first driver ran over that girl (with his front wheel), it was an accident. The second time (with his rear wheel) was NOT an accident – Horrible. And then all the other people, even a child, just pretending not to see her and not even calling for help – Disgusting.

Regretfully I’m not really surprised: years ago on vacation in China I saw a man lying on the road and cars just driving around him (I was inside a bus and only saw it in a flash). The people I told about it were not shocked like I was, but instead they offered the same excuse: anyone who stops will be accused of being the cause – and also that was defended, with the argument that a poor person grabs whatever he/she can take, and that it is normal! And that was before 2005. China is a horrible society.

  • James

I don’t know how ANYONE would ignore this… I would help her, unless there was some legitimate reason that I COULDN’T.

  • Hanna

unbelievable ! how a disgraceful people who didnt even bother to help a child. what if it was you their and being for help? this child, is resting now but she couldve been saved by the first person who did this or saw her. hmph thought that even if you are not related you could help an innocent child. all is known is that karma … oh man, it going to be a hard karma.

  • DuskofSociety

Although I can sympathize with the Chinese comments, I will leave this behind to ponder:

First they came for the communists,
    and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
    and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
    and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Jew.

    Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

    My verse:
If you ignore the plight of others
    Expect that others ignore yours

  • Valerie12345

First of all, I don’t believe that this is an accident! For all you dumbasses out there who gives excuses for these people who ran over and ignored your child. The child obviously needed help! They could have at least yelled out for help and make sure the child is okay and called an ambulance or something!!! I honestly would have have picked up the child and bring it to the hospital myself!! I don’t care how busy I am or what!! That’s a child!! A human being! Not a cockroach or a cat! Even a cat or dog, I would help!!

  • susan

Zero excuses for anyone that ran the girl over or ignored her. To say these people are animals is too kind. They are scum-period. STFU with your lame excuses.

  • BantheScan

Communism at its finest. We aren’t far behind you here in America.

  • :(

The absolute devestation that I feel watching this video can be boiled down to one thing, Humans are the most disgusting race on the face of the planet. A child is to be protected and cherished, regardless of why she was on her own, those people had a moral duty, this is an epic fail for our species!!!!

I could never turn a blind eye, I can’t even turn a def ear when I hear curse words.

    EPIC FAIL!!!!

  • krist

Could you please tell me , Did she survived?…i read in article she got hospitalized….please if someone know about her conditions…oh little baby, it is not your fault people are so callous…im ashamed im a human being, when i see my race acting this way.

    • http://candosino.wordpress.com terroir

the news in the China Daily now is that she is not dead, but the best prognosis for her is to be in a “vegetative state”. Both the family of the girl as well as the 19th passerby have received many donations from the government and people.

This definitely makes Chinese people look bad, but then a case like this is also a chance for reticent Chinese to talk about things openly, something that doesn’t happen often.

If online pressure can stop Chinese from exercising their inalienable right to consume dog meat as an universal cultural heritage, well, who knows, maybe it can stop Chinese from exercising their cultural right to act like a cold, uncaring mass but instead “evolve” to become aware, caring individuals.

      • Michele

I am happy to hear that, by happy I mean this is an acknowledgement of a very bad situation. I’m not ashamed to say I’ve been obsessing for a few days now and it makes me feel a little better. Now how about shooting the nanjiing judge I’ve been reading so much about…..

  • X

the driver of that van should be ran over!!!! i would gladly do it!! He def. saw that child what a sick person!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Melissa

to the person who said “No one wants to cause trouble for themselves. These days, everyone is busy enough with their own matters. To say these people are cold-blooded is a bit too strong. Those who want to criticize them should first ask themselves: Would you have gone to help or not?” …are you kidding me? i dont care how busy i am with my own matters.. if you see someone who CLEARLY got ran over and is lying on the ground helpless i would help them no matter what!!!! That is a 2 year old girl lying on the ground dying. it does not matter if its a male, female, old, young, black, white, christian or athiest… if someone saw that i would hope that they would help. What if that was your child?…this is just terrible for people to defend these bystanders who walked by and didnt help you’re all crazy.. this is disgusting and i personally think every one of those 17 people who actually noticed the poor girl should be ashamed of themselves.. this little girl is in my prayers God bless her and her family!

  • joe

this is one of the worst things that I have ever seen , when i read the story in the paper this morning i had tears in my eyes and im not the type of person who gets emotional very easy .

what has become of people? , they have absolutely no morals or standards or even any type of feelings for anything but themsleves , its all about me menatality .

they need to put every single person that walked by and didnt help , in jail for life , and the drivers of both vehicles need to be excuted without trial.

I cannot find words to express how deeply sad and disgusted that I am . I pray that this little girl did not suffer to much and I would like donate somthing to the family .

if anyone knows howI can send a small donation , i would be gratefull

    • actionjksn

If you donate money it will never go to the victims family. Do you really think Chinese people would actually give it to them? HA HA HA. These soulless Communist self serving greedy animals would steal the money in a second, and not loose any sleep over it. They’re not all like that but a huge percentage are. This was not an anomaly it was just normal behavior, even before the asshole judge busted that guy for helping someone. So send them some money, you will just be buying some greedy uncaring person an ipad or something. In fact any of those bystanders there would be willing to stomp the little girl’s head and guts in for a free ipad, first generation even.

  • momo

i cried the whole time! ugh.
& for you people asking all these “what if’s” here’s another one: What if that was YOUR child? Wouldn’t you want somebody to help your child out atleast by calling for help?! Seriously. Because these people are “scared” to get the blame for it a little girl’s life is nearly over. Think about it. I would certainly help that child out! Most deffinately. No innocent childs life should be lost because of fear to help!

  • Caroline

I don’t believe in God, and I don’t believe we’re judged for the good or bad things we did in life. But I do believe that we each have an inner voice, a conscience that tells us what is right, and what is abjectly, immorally, wrong.

Those people who passed by a bleeding, broken 2-year old child named Wang Yue without attempting to care for her or ease her pain in any way have no inner voice– their insides are as cold and dead as that child may soon be.

I hope that this is a wakeup call to the Chinese people. Live with mercy and compassion. Do that which you know is RIGHT, consequences notwithstanding. For only then will you sleep well at night, and wake in the morning with inner peace.

Personally, I dont think ALL chinese are the same and that, we see that in the lady saving the girl…it makes me really sad that people ignored her… the place where I am right now it’s surrounded by violent and coward acts, but most people is eager to help others, that is our humanity.

  • Jeff

Dunno whats wrong with you people i mean its a person is it not natural with helping someone. I dont give a fuck if i get blamed for helping someone i did my part and personally if i saw any of those ppl i’ll tell u wtf is wrong with you. this inexcusible, so what if some nanjiang judge made some stupid decision and making ppl not help this girl if you had conscience you would of help this girl no matter what other society thinks. For u ppl saying that u would of been screwed over your just going with the flow so i think ur also in the wrong, but i guess it dont mean much if its just internet bashing so i’ll leave that up to u on how you take this.

  • Pissed OFF MOMMA

Alot of you people and your horrible comments on here make me so fucking SICK!!!!I have 4 sons of my own and 2 beautiful Stepdaughters. I would KILL someone if they did this to my child and didn’t try to do anything about it and just drive over her again like she is a peice of garbage and people walking by and just looking at her mangled bloody little body and not do a damn thing! What the HELL is wrong with you people!?? and even worst where were the parents in this! I would flip out if i turned around for 2 seconds and seen my kid missing i would be on a rampage! My step-daughter and i cried watching this video and even worse i have a 2yr.old little boy. I can’t even imagine something like this happeing to either of my babies. Your country obviously needs a MAJOR change and QUICK! THis is horrible and I pray the little girl makes it out alive and recovers, but from the looks of that video i highly dought she will ever be able to walk again….how sad….and the whole baby and blender comments below….FUCK YOU ASSHOLE!!!!I wish i could throw you in my brother’s woodchipper right now feet first and watch you die a slow painful death! feel the pain that that poor little child had to feel to some ignorant sensless heartless people! All the people in this video needs to be caught and turned in and convicted to the full exctent possible! I’m so disusted and sick to my stomche right now and highly PISSED! How dare you people give our humanity a bad name….so very sad. I’m praying for the little girl and her family at this horrible time. I will keep in touch to keep updated on what’s going on with her. <3 Sweet Angel i know you can pull through baby.

    • Chef Rocco

Momma in rage, I would be cheerful and happy to see you throwing the 20 bastards into your brother’s woodchipper. But if you want to continue, I’d reminder you that there are 1.3 billion on the line, including the trash collector helped the girl, even though the woodchipper is not made in China, it definitely would fail quickly.

You have ordered that China carry out a MAJOR change and QUICK, I guess Mr. Hu in Zhongnanhai has heard that and would obey as you please.

  • Brock

The fact of the matter is – this wouldn’t happen in Britain or the USA etc no matter what kind of accident compensation claim culture might be prevalent. Something is very wrong with the Chinese people as a whole.

    • Caroline

Sorry, Brock (as am I, being a well-intentioned American), but you’re mistaken. “Bystander syndrome” is a phrased coined in America after an incident that occurred in NYC in the 60′s. It’s also known as “Genovese syndrome” after an American woman by that last name who was stabbed multiple times, THEN raped, over a 30-minute time period, while 38 bystanders did nothing. Google it.

      • Brett Hunan

Actually, Sweet Caroline…. as another well-intentioned America, you are also mistaken. The Kitty Genovese case has largely been disproved. There are many documents written about the incident, and it has been shown that none of the 38 bystanders were watching out of their windows during the entirety of the event. Most weren’t sure of what was happening.

Please check earlier posts on this article to see that this has already been addressed.

        • Chef Rocco

Brett, the disapproval of Kitty Genovese case doesn’t necessarily invalidate bystander effect itself, which has been proven by numerous cases, I posted one above.

          • Brock

Your example isn’t even relevant to this situation. People are reluctant to intervene when there is violence involved – for example stopping someone from being beaten up.
This was a 2 year old girl on her own dying on the side of the road, explain how its remotely similar to stopping a man raping a woman? Its not.

          • Chef Rocco

Brock, did you watch the video that I posted above?

The car that clashed on the victim has fled away, similar hit-and-run situation with the Foshan one. The major difference is that it happened under daylight and most people on the scene witnessed it clearly.

          • Capt. WED

not to seem like making excuses or doing a BUT USA recently some dude beat his kid to death while people watched.

          • Brett Hunan

You are right. I in no way intended to disprove bystander effect.

          • Brett Hunan

Brock, all of this has been covered in the previous posts. I think CR just thought that I was trying to discount B.E. theory. I wasn’t and I don’t think CR was implying that this was necessarily bystander effect. Also, CR never said anything about China, so I don’t understand why you bring up USA….?

Anyways, lets all forget about Kitty Genovese for this post.

What happened and what those people did is amazing in the fact that 18 people could see a girl dying at their feet (literally) and didn’t think to do anything to help. I have no idea whether it was B.E. or Nanjing or any other psyco-babble excuse. It is just disgusting in my honest opinion.

          • Brock

You can try and equalize as much as you like but nothing you have done so far has been successful. This would not happen in the USA>

          • Brett Hunan

Brock, I think myself and many other Americans here would disagree.

Anyways, you have no proof. So cut it out.

  • Jaded Foreign Devil

To say that the negligent passersby are scum is an insult to scum.

  • nikki

If anyone can sit here and try to give reason for those people ignoring a toddler they have no soul. NO HUMAN DESERVES THIS. This is disgusting. I cant even watch the video.

God forgive them.Hope their conscience will lead them on peace of mind. I salute to the good samaritan.

  • Cara Williams

Why and How can a person ask, would you have stop and helped that little girl? The person who lefted that comment is sick as the rest of them. Seriously, no matter two or eighty years old, no person should want to see another human in such pain. My prayers go out to the Parents and Family, I will think of her every day.

Is there anyone out there who can tell me where to find or contact those parents so i can help them in any

Ok yes. the people in this video (the bystanders) are pathetic. criticize them because in a way they most likely deserve it. But when writing comments stop and think that, sure this was a act of inhumanity, but like someone said “part of humanity by definition is sadist, dark, violent, and apathetic”. They shouldn’t have left that poor little girl there. Some say all Chinese people have no heart, stop and think many of us who are Chinese would have helped her, believe me my heart goes out to that little girl. But judging everyone by the actions of a small group are bad as well, clearly not as worse as ignoring the little girl but still this shows us that our world is not united, even being countries apart. Even if the driver and bystanders are to blame, blaming them isn’t going to bring back Yue Yue, instead we need to work on making sure this doesn’t happen again wether its possible or not.

Think of what you would do in that position. It’s easy to judge someone on their action’s not knowing the truth behind the situation.

  • shasta

“Man’s inhumanity to man” at work and on display for all of us to see. This time it was a helpless baby not yet able to even talk, left completely unattended by her parents and no passerby bothered to at least move her off of the busy, dark street where many trucks were passing and could not see such a tiny child beneath their line of vision. And when she was finally run down, these people left her there, helpless, and alone to die in the street like a dog! A BABY for Christ’s sake! But what bothers most people who leave comments? Not the horrific shame of it all – but they are bothered because the video was put out for all to see! And it has nothing to do with nationality, race, creed, age or whatever. Only weeks ago we watched another video where a woman in a hospital waiting area suddenly collapses and falls to the floor unconscious – while those around her ignore her completely! Even hospital employees ignore her! And that one was us – good old Americans! The woman lay sprawled on the floor dying, IN AN AMERICAN HOSPITAL- while other Americans sat there, across from and around her – and kept thumbing through old magazines and ignored her! We need to wake up, and we need to do it soon – before our callous inattentiveness and disregard for the welfare of even the most helpless and innocent and needy among us results in our own self-destruction. We should all be so ashamed – so very ashamed. We left a baby to die in the street before our eyes, and were offended that we had to watch!!! God help us all . . . .

  • marcella

I am sorry but anybody who even remotely suggests that the drivers or people around are not to blame are insane. If you hit someone with a car, you stop. Period. No excuses. I have been very poor in my life at one point and I am not a born American, and I still feel that way. What, that he is poor and has to struggle for his life is an excuse? That is SO sad, that anyone would think that way. As long as you consider yourserlf human, you have to act like one, too. If you wish to be taken for a rat only caring about survival, I suggest you take up residency with them and then, ONLY then, you may live by their laws as well.

  • Johnny Basic

Comments about the bystander effect elsewhere miss the point. Kitty Genovese et al shock people because they’re dismayed nobody did anything. The expectation is that people *should* have done something.

Generally though, this isn’t what Chinese commenters are condemning here. The case touches a raw nerve among the Chinese less because they think passers-by should have intervened, but rather, because it provides a disturbing insight into what the prevailing mindset can bring about. It isn’t so much shocking because it’s out of the ordinary, it’s shocking because it’s a horrifically extreme outcome of what is by no means an unusual scenario.

Sad to say, shit happens to children all the time in China, with en masse kidnappings, milk poisonings, crushed by jerry-built schools in earthquakes, run over by BMWs, so on and so on. So why has this case resulted in so much more soul-searching? It’s because it can’t be written off as a the wrongdoing of corrupt officials, crooked businessmen or black-hearted criminals, it’s because it’s a direct consequence of a mindset uncomfortably recognisable to the average Chinese. The passers-by could easily have been them, and that’s what makes it so stomach-churning.

    • Chef Rocco

Bright analysis. But you seem to have skipped a very important factor: technology, i.e. street CCTV and internet.

I believe, as a huge country like China, brutal and ugly things happened every single day before, similar events like Yueyue’s tragedy are actually not rare. But without vivid video and internet, they would not turned into explosive scandals attracting whole society’s attention.

This one happened to be recorded and reported by mass media, becomes hot topic in every Chinese forum.

      • Tengu

Sherlock Holmes always worried about what happened in isolated country houses, not in the cities where everyone notices everything.

Same thing here, shit happens all the time, not condoning it, but the analogy sticks with Rocco’s assertion crazy shit happens all the time, we just know about it and have it added to out nightmares at lightening speed thanks to technology and camera on every corner.

Then again how do we explain Jeffrey Dahnmer, guy was caught because he was running down the street after a kid whose head he drilled a hole in.

Guy in Germany had the basement of horrors with his daughter living there for years, he was screwing her since she was a kid.

Guys in Belgium had been running a child porn ruing out of a house in the suburbs for years.

Couple in LA kept a girl captive in their backyard for years, it’s LA, great weather you can see in each other’s backyards.

Blind eyes were turned there as well, had to. You don’t get away with something for years unless you’re a criminal mastermind, all of the above were simply/or very complex sexual predators.

No one noticed two single guys walking in and out of a house with little boys and girls all the tie and put two and two together?

Female lawyer in California was torn apart in her hallway by two Presa Carnarios while her neighbors listened from behind their doors.

No one gave a shit about John Wayne Gacey having young boys enter his house and never leave until it started to stink.

This is one of the most horrific and egregious things I have seen in years and it sickens me. I din’t even want to comment originally because the video sickens me and it takes a lot.

So take the size of China, India, the USA and think about all those isolated places Sherlock talked about and think of what unspeakable horrors happen with no one watching…we just happened to be watching this time and I wish I could forget it.

So I agree J.B shit happens all the time, sadly we just knew about faster now.

        • Just John

I agree Tengu. One reason I have not commented directly on the story is I would probably say the same useless BS as others on here “Chinese…cowards…inhumane…apathy…etc”.

Except, you should know me better, I prefer not to lock myself into the prevailing sentiment of an article, since so many people have already said it, and prefer to find someones silly claims and play devils advocate.

Of course, this time I tried to swallow a stone, named myriam, and by swallow a stone, I mean try to explain something to someone who seems to dense to get it.

It’s better to argue with people about stupid stuff than to dwell on the horror that is the human species at stories like this.

          • Michele

Just John to be fair Myriam was outraged as was I and some of us know very well that what we don’t see is worse than what we do all over the world. This video was about one tiny girl nothing else.

          • Just John

Well, it would help if her outrage actually allowed her to think.
That is what I do, I explain my opinion, I challenge people on their opinions, and I sometimes exaggerate a situation so others may actually reflect on how silly their opinions are when you actually stop and think about it.

The entire diatribe towards myriam was not because I disagreed with some of her points, it was that I was trying to explain the reason behind this situation. She seemed to feel, no matter how many times I tried to tell her that all I was trying to do was give her insight into the mentality she saw, that I was apologizing, excusing, or whatever.

I never once told her I agreed with them, and in fact, mentioned repeatedly that that was not my position, but since she refused to actually rationally look at what I was saying, and seemed to feel anyone who actually tried to explain the way things were, well, that put her in my “idiot” category.

Lets face it, horrible stuff happens, and it will deeply effect people, some more than others. But loosing your mind completely over something and refusing to actually think is just plain stupidity. Maybe on some other story, she might be able to see what I was telling her because she won’t be blinded by outrage, but in this story, she has not used her intelligence and has failed to even know what another was even talking about, all because she allowed herself to be so blinded she refused to hear anything other than sympathy for the girl and outrage for everyone else.

What separates us from the wild beasts? Our ability to think rationally. myriam appears to have lost that ability, at least on this story. I guess I will dub her “myriam, the wild beast” instead of idiot, maybe she will like that more.

          • Tengu

John, I didn’t even want to get involved in this, but unfortunately I wound up in here..tried staying out of it, to fucking horrific and too many moving parts.

Can’t bitch about the parents, because they didn’t do anything illegal, just the law. Morally, yeah, but legally no.

Fucking truck driver driver over her and then another and everyone walking by….fuck me.

And I hate to say it , but I’m not getting on a China bashing wagon, I just can’t , can’t sit around waving the flag either, everyplace is flawed. well maybe not Iceland…

You do an admirable job of Devil’s Advocate…now about the petting zoo…

          • Just John

You should hear the story about me and my ex’s first pet scorpion.
I was taking a shower and all the sudden got a sharp pain on the bottom of my foot. Made me jump.
I looked down, and found out I had stepped on a scorpion.
Sucker hurt, like stepping on glass and having the shards grinding around in your foot.

Anyways, I put a cup over it, finished my shower, got ready for work. Warned the wife about it and let her take care of it.

I get home, we have a new aquarium with a pet scorpion sitting in it.

          • Tengu

She wanted him around so he could apologize to you for ruining your shower…never bit you again did he?

Either that or she was milking him for venom and your days were numbered.

I had ferrets, fastest damn animal I ever came across in my life…

          • myriam

hmmm, well that could explain a few things about you. A scorpion sting often results in paresthesia and can damage nerve systems and which can be indicative of a current NEUROLOGICAL DISORDER. A long lasting after effect is very often a Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, which is an entrapment IDIOPATHIC median neuropathy. You shouldn’t take that easy.

The good side is that, none of the people you call names and the way show your aggressiveness, can really be mad at you, now that you have an excuse for you behavior. Though, i am not sure if the scorpion argument would stand in a court trial, so you shouldn’t go so far to beat people in public, sodomize animals or rob a bank, relying on that your disorder will bring you some bonus points. Everything has its limits, even the tolerance for someone with a neurological disorder, who is not able to differ between right and wrong, good and bad.

I am curious, a scorpion sting can have long lasting after effects !

          • Just John

            myriam, sometimes your just strange…
Think it was said best on Terminator: The Sarah Conner chronicles
            You’re a very scary robot…

          • Tengu

@Myriam – you’re going to have to grow a skin which is covered in denticles to swim with this crowd, learning to regenerate a limb wouldn’t be time wasted either. Consider it a trial by fire.

Anytime I gnaw on a leg or a carotid and loose a tooth another pops in from the row behind, they’re serrated.

Bank robberies are a specialty and J.J’s not into that, besides he gets jittery and when the Tourette’s kick in he can’t hit the side of a barn, just starts spraying all over the place.

I’m all for “softening up a room”, but during the last episode he took out the entire banking staff, no staff, no open vault, no money.

We tried making him drive and wait in the car, but he kept leaving to find a Starbucks and while it was very kind of him to remember what we drank, it was very stressful standing on the street in our masks waiting for him.

Then the OCD reared it’s ugly face….”Hooots gets the Macchiato, Tengu has the soy Quad Cappuccino, Brett here’s your 1% no-foam Green Tea Latte.” He insisted on handing everything out before we could leave the curb…sirens in the background.

As far as the zoophilia, you are right, he had a brief period of attraction to sheep; could never get them to stand still. Having been to Greece, I told him to bring them down to the river. When you have them at the edge of a river….they push back, much more pleasurable experience, I held her front feet just to be safe…what are friends for. I’m glad he got that out of his system.

So in short, you may have the flesh flayed off you one minute by someone and find them backing you up and shedding blood to defend you the next.

All in a days work, we can be bought.

BTW – “…a scorpion sting can have long lasting after effects!”

Good one, everyone fucks up affect v. effect.

            Be good…you like ginger root?

humans loosing their humanity in large cities…very sad. All of those people should be ashamed of themselves. You are not robots, you are human, act like it!!!!!

  • Lari Animalover

What if it had happened to your daughter/sister?

    • Just John

Then we would use ALL CAPS to yell at everyone on a message board? We would reference animals where no animals were referenced? Is that what your getting at? Was this your daughter/sister?

At least you pressed the capslock button so your message was not in all caps…

  • Lari Animalover

Please stop saying cats and dogs and ” as low as these people who didn’t help the girl”. You people have no understanding about animals o whatsoever. They are better living being they all you Chinese. They are more affectionate and warmer them most of you.

This is A F###ing low point.!
5000 years of culture and history. Means nothing except some turtle shells left in the fire and fake water colour paintings.
foreign investment, foreigners tolerating rudeness and other bad behaviour thats it – your average China man really should wake up and as Mao once said “stand up!”.

I cannot forgive anyone who didn’t help that wretched little girl – a bullet for each. My goes out to the parents.
To the the person in the scene walking past with their own child……. F### your whole family!

This is the low point! Hu Jin Tao, and Wen Jia Bao have absolutely nothing to be proud of!

This tragedy is so sad. 18 people just went past? some had to swerve to avoid her

    • Boris

‘Foreigners tollerating rudeness.’ -How dare they behave like this?! The cheek of it! Don’t they know we’re white?!?! They ought to know our rules of etiquette so when we arrive in their backward country they can treat us precisely in the style we’ve been accustomed to. Blasted heathens!

pfft. No “hell” exists according to the government, which is athetist.

Except if you’re talking about Shenzhen, that is.

        • Just John

And when in Shenzhen, you have a soul stealing succubus named “Shenzhen beauty” waiting to poke you with her pitchfork as she drains you of your soul.
          Am I correct?

They are all beauties; that means, of course, that they all are not.

Oh, to be a flower vase, waiting to have a bouquet of fresh roses thrust into you, and filled with water – that is contentment.

          • Just John
