Over the span of 7 minutes, a total of 17 people passing by failed to extend a hand or call the police, up until the 19th person, a garbage scavenger ayi [older woman], who lifted her up after discovering her but the little girl in her arms was like a noodle, immediately collapsing back onto the ground. It isn’t ignoring, it’s not daring. If one were to encounter a Nanjing judge, one would be screwed.

[Note: "Nanjing judge" refers to the infamous 2006 case of a man named Peng Yu who helped a woman to the hospital after she had fallen only to have the old woman accuse him of knocking her down. The Nanjing judge in that case ultimately ruled that common sense dictated that only the person who hit her would take her to the hospital, setting a precedent that continues only further discourages and reinforces many Chinese people's wariness to help others in similar situations.]

The driver should die.
The child’s parents have some responsibility that cannot be shirked, especially the mother.
The passers-by who ignored an injured child are as low as cats and dogs, simply unbelievable.

Don’t blame the passersby, it was a Nanjing judge that killed this little girl.

网易广东省河源市网友:

Those people who walked by are animals. No, even some animals have compassion and would at the very least stop to take a look. Those 18 pigs who walked by should also be arrested and taught a lesson with 15 days [in jail]. Instead it was the waste scavenger ayi from other parts [of the country] who had a conscience.

网易浙江省宁波市网友:

Mencius taught us: The poor must look after themselves, while they rich should spread goodness throughout the world.

With regards to this incident, we first cannot blame the driver, who makes a living with his physical labor. We cannot close our eyes and demand that he bear too much responsibility, as he didn’t mean to hit someone either, and it was definitely very difficult to have noticed [the child], and afterward he was conflicted too, only he was afraid of bearing the burden of compensation and that’s why he chose to run away. I can sympathize with him. After all, running away means still having a life to live while not running might mean his life is completely ruined. Though running away means his conscience is to be condemned, how important is one’s conscience for the rabble where simply getting enough to eat is already a major accomplishment? Not betraying one’s conscience in reality is a kind of spiritual luxury.

The people who passed by are also not worthy of being blamed. To conclude that they are cold-blooded for turning a blind eye is a bit arbitrary. If it were a small cat or a small dog struggling on the ground, I think they would definitely give their attention, even kneel down to investigate the injuries, maybe even carrying them home to nurse them back to health. But when it is a child, everyone pretends they don’t see, it is always like this, almost without exception. This is not about whether or not a person is cold-blooded or not cold-blooded, but it is definitely about there being a very serious problem in society. These days, it is better to be less involved than more involved. Getting involved may very well mean getting majorly screwed. There are really too many of these kind of precedents, and everyone has silently evolved from these observations. No one is more qualified than anyone else to criticize.

Those above who are saying that our countrymen have become numb, I want to ask simply: What would you do if you ran into this kind of thing? Don’t just blame this or that on this internet post, would you risk being accused of being the perpetrator? Would you be willing to dump your entire family’s savings into the endless vortex of accident compensation? You aren’t afraid of going to jail as the perpetrator? Have you not considered that one moment of greatness could mean your entire family losing their happiness with you? Do you know just how many Nanjing judge [case results] there are? Do you think it is only Nanjing? The consequences of moral turpitude is not something that you and I can rectify. We are just ordinary people. Seeing this kind of thing, I can only describe it as heart-breaking, but I would be numb/indifferent like those 18 people…because I am a normal person!!!

  • Lari Animalover

Just I’m not sure why you picked on me, but it just makes me more sure now that, the more I know people(like you,for example) the more I love animals. Animals are voiceless they can’t speak for themselves, I didn’t like what that Chinese said about them that’s why I posted it, because animals are better than humans, in many ways. Animals even help each other.. If chinese do what they do to these poor creatures, who only make us happy and give us love, it doesn’t surprise me what they are able to do to kids…and if I could I would have replied straight to him, but unfortunately it doesn’t give me this option…so please if you have nothing else nice to say, just leave me alone.

    • Just John

Well, sorry if you are under the impression I was picking on you, of course, that may be proper towards the end when I start talking about roasted cat and dog soup…I become a smartass when people drag on an issue.

For the record, lets look at my responses to you.

First, I kindly reminded you to check your capslock key, because no one likes to see someone typing in all caps, and that is a great way to get people to hate you automatically, since it is the equivalent of yelling at someone.

I later then also tried to let you know about the Reply feature so you could actually hold a conversation in a thread, instead of a separate entry each time, which makes conversations disjointed and basically makes it pointless to discuss an issue.

I followed by informing you of where the comment about cats and dogs came from, and explained that you should go to the proper place to tell them not to do this comparison, because it is useless to try to preach about it here. I even gave you the direct link so you would not have to find it at the top.

When you started talking about skinning cats and dogs alive, something that has no relevance to a 2 year old girl being ran over, I pointed you to those relevant stories so you could post your disagreements there.

You then continued to explain why you kept talking about cats and dogs, which I had already explained to you that this was the wrong place to do so, and possibly you should go to the source.

Given your name includes “Animalover”, and you keep going on and on about cats and dogs, it is pretty easy to see your agenda. Possibly you are a 12 year old girl, sitting behind the computer somewhere, who likes cute kittens and fluffy dogs, so you see the post which included them and you freaked out. I have no clue, nor do I care. I treated my 11 year old daughter the same as I treated my 30 year old wife (now ex), with the exception of editing some of my jokes, topics, and language for age related content (Yes, mostly I spoke to my daughters as I would adults, not kids, because they could handle big words and complex ideas).

So, while you may be spot on about me picking on you in reference to the roasted cat and dog soup, other than that I have tried to steer you to the correct place to express your opinions about the topics you were discussing, so I am unsure how that is “picking on you”. Of course, I will admit that the roasted cat and dog soup was picking on you, because I was quite frankly tired of you continually addressing topics that were not appropriate for this topic.

If you regard someone addressing your comments and pointing you to the proper place to address them as picking on you, then you really need to get over it, because telling you that you did something incorrectly is not picking on you. If you are somehow upset by someone making a crude joke, I would seriously suggest leaving the internet now and never coming back, because the internet is nothing but a crude joke with some filler material (pron) in between.

Just a little fact, I had at one point 8 cats, three of which were rescued strays, 2 ferrets, 3 turtles, 1 dog, rescued before she was ran over by another car (Yes, we dognapped her because her owners were idiots who did not take proper care of her and she had been hit by a car twice), 2 leopard geckos, and 2 scorpions. My ex-wife is a vet technician, and hates people, but loves animals and working with them in vet clinics. With my current wife, we have two cats and my sister-in-law has 1, so we have 3 cats running around. All in all, I love animals, and hate seeing them abused or neglected. The difference is, I know that the story of a 2 year old girl getting ran over by cars and ignored by passerbyes is not the proper place to discuss them.

Your opinion about the Chinese comment is noted, now let it drop and move on to the topic at hand or move to another story.

      • Lari Animalover

First of all my first language is not English and where I come from capital letters don’t mean Im yelling at someone but means I’m trying to get someone’s attention by posting it bigger. And that’s what I was trying to do, since I cannot reply straight to the Chinese guy who said those things about cats and dogs, I saw, below their comments, a space where it says:” leave a message”, and I thought these comments would go straight to these Chinese people and it’d be also translated. Second of all, I’m not a 12 year old girl, I’m just a girl with a very good heart, who doesn’t like when people talk bad things about animals, as they can’t defend themselves..and it makes me very angry when people compare them to bad people, because they are much better than most humans. And my point here is, animals are like kids, and if in china they do what they do to innocent animals it doesn’t surprise me what they do to a child. So I’m sorry but in my point of view I dont think i did anything wrong, i was only trying to express my feelings and empathizing with the animals who were quoted above.

        • hooots

          Lari,

I am an animal lover as well, and I completely identify with your outrage with this situation. However, to say that animals are nice, pure, helpful, and benevolent is quite an over statement. Have you ever seen animals eat their own babies? I have. Have you ever seen a snake strangle a baby mouse to death then swallow it whole? Have you ever seen animals kill eachother and eat eachother because one of them didn’t smell right? I have. Animals are definitely no better than humans. Every terrible quality that humans exude I could name 10 animals that wrote the book on it. We just happen to be the example in the animal kingdom of the most extreme cases of best/worst ect….. We are all animals. Some just happen to be shittier examples of our species than others.

          • Lari Animalover

Hoots how can you say you are an animal lover and make so many stupid comparisons? First of all you are talking about their nature which is kill to eat, a snake eats a mouse because it’s need to eat and survive. You miss the main point completely about wisdom which only human species has…
If you want to be violent then be for sure but on people like Bin Laden who kills humans like humans kill animals and other humans too. Humans are not only destroying the animals and their own specie but also the Planet, animals don’t make war, humans do. I knew and therefore believe that knowledge is abundant with everyone but wisdom comes to rare of the rarest…Lets make it more positive by beleiving No person or animal is bad… It’s'the animal in the person is bad :) so animals, foreign or domestic, can only be tamed ….!!!! :)

        • Just John

Actually, I never claimed you did something wrong. I am not capable of making that decision, and if Chinasmack felt you did something wrong, they would tell you.

I only tried to guide you to the proper places to vent, since it seems inappropriate here (like skinning animals, really, do we need to go there?), and to understand common internet etiquette (like not typing in all caps) for English.

Of course you are free to state any and every idea you wish, just as others are free to call you out on it, and still others are allowed to call those people out, and blah blah blah. We are all free to say, do and otherwise be whatever we want on here to the extent that Fauna chooses not to delete our posts because we are trying to be to free.

Welcome to the internet. Please leave your sanity at the door.

        • Tengu

I always had a sneaky suspicion Just John was a little “off”, now after hearing he lived in his own personal petting zoo for a time being , it’s all starting to fall into place. (How old is your current sister-in law?)

While I commend your passion about animals, this article goes well beyond that, humans have emotions other species do not which were not exhibited here.

There are obvious exceptions to every rule, I think we’ve proven cetaceans have complex thought and emotions, but that’s a better argument for the “Faroe Island Whale Hunt”.

As far as the animal/children analogy, while it’s true for many, nature instills the utmost violence into ANY animal for survival. Look at the average house cat and how he stalks and kills your pewt parakeet/budgie.

Animals of ALL kinds have one instinct SURVIVAL…very basic, very pure, not evil.

Chimps are one of the few animals other than man who will actually “murder” another of their species…no reason, piss them off and they’ll kill each other , sometimes for revenge, sometimes, just because they can.

Male lions when taking over a pride will kill all the young of the previous male head of the pride to keep his own gene pool alive.

Your comparison also has a few flaws in it simply because any wounded animal would be considered a threat to the safety of the “collective” because it would tend to attract predators.

Some animals are simply killing machines with that singular purpose driving their existence.

This is a horrific incident, no excusing anyone, little girl run over TWICE, all the people ignoring her, not to put too fine a point on it, but thew woman who grabbed her and dragged her around , good Samaritan though she may be, probably did more harm than good to the kid, but when the norm is to now be involved she’a admirable in spite of her mistake.

The total apathy and lack of compassion, humanity and empathy here is the issue.

We should collectively share common emotions and a common need to make the species survive and advance.

Sadly this is proof we have a long way to go in that arena.

        • Tengu

Lani, not sure if you’ve seen this , but it is quite amazing, it actually shows more involvement by animals in caring for their young than exhibited in the video above:

I think I’m starti. To love you Tengu :)
I know animals are more caring than those people showed in that video.that’s why I got angry when a stupid Chinese compared these people with animals and even said animals are low. He’s probably another cold, heartless Chinese.

          • Just John

Careful Tengu, or you might end up with another 小三 囧

          • Tengu

            What’s not to love?

Lari, you’ll be at my throat in another piece and John will be protecting your virtue….welcome to the Monkey House.

John is actually a burly, smelly Romanian man who wears a wig that looks like a Norway rat died on his head and has a fondness for eating raw onions. He was in the Securitate under Ceaușescu but left the Romania when his boss was assassinated.

He hid in many places, many countries, changing identities every year or so. Even sang as a woman under the name “Zazita” at “Papillion” a gay nightclub in Antwerp for about 6 months, his reviews were mixed. The day he found out no one was even looking for him and The Hague had no idea who he was came as a big disappointment…he’s been edgy ever since.

Be careful we’re all very sneaky.

          • Just John

Actually, I shave my head. Makes more sense than going bald gracefully. End it in one fell swoop, or is that one swell foop (As Piers Anthony would say)?

  • I care

OMG!For those who are on his side, you’re just as bad as he is.Really, running over a 2 year old child and not caring?Pfft, what am I saying? That idiot knew he ran over a child. And he only stopped to check if he had damaged something in his truck. But what really pissed me off is the fact that he ran over her again in slow motion. And the second driver too!But more importantly,THE FIRST DRIVER!
Is this guy like a heartless, cruel idiot? In the interview he LAUGHED about the incident. He only said that he had a wife and a 14 year old daughter.Which is why he ran away! But you know, you can’t always run forever bitch…eventually they’ll find you.And those people who passed by,the first or second person could have helped the girl! She was bleeding on the road for goodness sake!
This is an opinion NOT A BIAS
And also, whoever said we’re posting this from the fear of ourselves dying, you’re plain wrong! We’re posting caring comments because we actually have A HEART!You’re just as bad if you don’t give a shit at all.

    • Just John

Well, if you feel so strong about it, look at the silver lining.
This child will not grow up to be a heartless Chinese person who will just walk by a 2 year old laying in the road, bleeding to death.
So, one less future heartless, careless person in the world to worry about.

      • B

I heard that the child is brain dead alternatively dead. So your right.

      • hooots

But, maybe she will be reincarnated as the person that will heal this wound in Chinese society. One more evolutionary step: a fine line between competing with your species and helping it survive. The evolutionary conundrum. But, helping it survive is obviously the correct reaction. Idiots. I don’t want them contributing to my species.

      • Stu

Just John, you’re way out of line here. There’s a lot of comments saying ‘China is inhumane, all Chinese people are evil’ etc etc, but this isn’t one of them. There’s nothing in this comment about ‘the Chinese’, and in fact it’s mainly criticising commenters here, many of whom are non-Chinese.

  • Yan Dow

Oh China; now you’ve gone and done it. Ironic, for a country who cares so much about “saving face”, and “gaining name”- this is possibly one of the worst ways possible to “lose face” while “gaining name”, for all the wrong reasons.

In truth, bad things happen on a daily basis. At any given time of the day, someone is getting raped, murdered, tortured, framed, and cheated in some part of this world. This case happens to be the “soul shattering” one, simply because it is:

    1. an extreme example, a rare statistic
    2. caught on camera

In short, what we do not see or know does not disturb us, does not make us care- although it has always been happening.

Although it is unfortunate, I do feel sometimes that things like these need to happen. Undoubtly nobody would ask for this sort of tragedy; the poor child died needlessly- but look at what her death is doing!

People are feeling shocked, sad, angry, shaken. Online debates are being sparked, some are playing the blame game. “Soul searching” is taking place.

Whatever it is- the important thing I think- is that people are REACTING and RESPONDING. In some grim, morbid way- it is a reminder that we are still human, not yet numb to such unspeakable cruelty.

    What happens after her case? I think the people will move on, and shit will continue to happen- but I also believe that Yue Yue’s death will leave a dent not just in China, but the world. Her death teaches every party a lesson;

to parents- take GOOD care of your child; a minute of carelessness could lead to his/her death.
to society- a bitter wake-up call on where our morals stand !

I hope that at the very least, the trash lady’s actions will overwrite the ridiculous “Nanjing Judge” fear, or whatever it is that is holding society back from caring.

  • Ono

I have simply on question for all of you who commented and are talking about the Nanjing Judge.. Had that been YOUR child, had that been your sibling, would you walk away because u are afraid of being blamed and live with the thoughts of having left a helpless child to die while you could’ve saved them? People in China need to change their attitudes. That child didn’t deserve any of this..

And they call Lions and Tigers and Wolf and all other animals (“Animals”). I think the human race are the real animals. Not those we call animals. To run a little girl over like that and ignore it and then a second vehicle runs her over and all those people ignore it is the biggest example of animalistic behavior, I have ever seen. And the mother is no better how can she leave a 2 year old wondering the street by herself like that she should be charged with child neglect too. I’am so sorry for that little girl.
I pray that God heals her and some caring person takes her and not that neglectful mother.

Total shame on every one of them, and to the 2 drivers that ran her down!!!! I cannot believe civilised human beings would act this way!!!! What is wrong with our world when we cannot help an innocent child on obvious pain and distress!!! God bless her and I pray she will recover from this atrocious act!!!

  • Sop

It’s FUCKING appalling! The Chinese people should be bloody ashamed of themselves. Absolutely DISGUSTED with the behavior. Everyone of those people that passed by should alternatively be ran over by 2 vans.

Seriously I aint a good person but fuck the judge that made that dum ass rule. I would not care less about my self in that sitituaton. I don’t think any right minded person would stand by and just let the gal die. Those ppl are even worse then dogs. Theirs a video in YouTube where dog helps our dogs when they get hit by a car. This is just to much. This chineses ppl should grow some heart and learn how to lend help rather then just think for themself. What if it was ur baby won’t u want some other ppl to help in that sitituaton. ??

I have been following this story an the condition of the little girl. It is so heartbreaking. Last night I cried so much for her mother. I have always wanted to adopt a Chinese daughter and raise a multicultural family in America. Last night I prayed that God save her instead of giving me a daughter. I wish I can hug her and tell her she’s loved by the world and we all are so sorry. No human deserves this.

And if I was to help and get fined for it all I know is in the end I would tell myself I saved a life! And be proud of myself. But in their case seems like they don’t give a damn. RT

  • Gingergirl

My heart goes out to the little girl…how alone she must have felt. Where are the days that mommies and daddies held their your child’s hand tightly when out in public, thereby keeping them close? And this is a TWO-year old?! Also, there was a very, very long space of time before the mother appeared. Pure neglect.

  • Connie

seriously what’s wrong with the society these days? The incident was a tragedy, but how some people commented proved the society losing its soul as a human being. When you are in this kind of situation as a passerby, will you still have a moment to think if the aid will risk your happiness? It is a human being..a little kid lying on the street with blood, and you still have a moment to be selfish enough to not reach out a hand? If these 17 people totally ignored this little girl are not cold-blooded, then what is the different between human and animals? Lying out there is not a garbage bad, it’s not a animal, but a human being still weakly breathing, how can they sleep at night?
The parents bear the negligent responsibility. And they are bearing the most painful consequence now.
The first driver is fully responsible. Accident happens all of the time. Nobody wants. But when it happened, what give you the right to think running away means you still have a chance to live?
The second drive can totally ignored the body and ran over again. This action was even worse than hit and run. How could they not be responsible or blamed for that?

  • Kk

The Chinese government must wake up, sack those Nanjing judge, n deem the first driver conduct as equal to committing murder….as for those who walk by without helping, won you feel pricked by conscience fit the rest of your life? Had you helped, the little girl wouldn’t be crashed by another van n suffer more pain n injury, your hand has been stained by blood too

Then the question to ask is: Can we turn things around and make it a better place?
This story is even on Australian news-websites now. And definitely a lot of people are outraged by this all over China. I hope that means something good will come out of this horrible tragedy.

There is no judge to blame; these 18 people clearly would have done this prior to 2006. People will look at this as 1 out of every 18 Chinese are good that how racist people or people with racist tendency will see this.

you may say the Chinese government can do more to facilitate good will to one another amongst it people, but in the end it is the 18 people not a judge or government, not even the parents can be blamed (assuming they did not neglect their child on purpose) quite obviously the child strayed out while they where in one of the store perhaps. The end result is really what matters….people ignored a little girl, bleeding on a filthy road, with her blood running down the drain like rain water,…sad. I heard of this while on phone call, on hold….a radio report was playing, after the call I just had to Google this.
At 44 years old I am not easily brought to tears, but I cried like a baby, and then I became extremely #@$@#$ angry!

Population density does make people less concerned, even in Canadian cities, but just not to that degree – it’s a child!!

Stop making stupid remarks that girls are less valued in china, that’s dumb, they would have equally walked by if it was a boy, it not like it was her father that left her there. In reference to the poor and the rich, the woman who picked up the little girl did not look low income to me (she did not even care if she got blood on her clothes and made up for the 18 that chose to be “comfortably numb”. Even a phone call or a scream to help her would have saved their conditions.

    I don’t think 2 wrongs make a right but
LETS TIE THE DRIVER AND THE 18 WITNES TO THE BACK OF A TRUCK DRAG THEM ACROSS CHINA AND THEN TIE THEM TO THE TRAIN TRACKS AND LET A REALLY LONG TRAIN RUN THEM OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND HAVE THEIR FAM WATCH BUT DOnt allowed them to do a thing to save them.

Than maybe they will become human again!!

(soo glad to be in the USA, yes recession I can live with that! but I know for a fact people care for one another. ) and at the end thats what matters the most !!

and to all parents in the world let this be a lesson – take better care of your children they are the future and the parents should be the protectors allways

I am in the UK, and can’t believe what I just saw, in my country, the driver would be in more trouble for doing nothing to help. he evn drove his back wheel over the baby, doing more damage, and I am disgusted buy the passers by, this was a toddler not a sack of rice. how could they walk by. I was crying watching this, people in other country’s already think the Chinese are heartless, after all dogs and cats are skinned live, this child abuse will just make us think worse of you as a nation, shame on the lot of them. this is all o0ver facebook tonight

I have to say, as a 34 year old woman, I have never seen anything more horrible in my whole life. I see things in movies that we can stomach because we know it is not real, but this… this is real and it hurts to think that those are humans walking around not helping a helpless child! Bless the children, my god~ Children are of those that should be first!!
This is all over CTV Canada as well and this little angel has been on my mind all day! Bless the family.. so sorry for those who are ignorant.

  • Pheonyx

That poor poor baby! I have a two year old little girl.. I could not imagine anyone in my area that would have reacted with such apparent disregard, and while I was so sad and horrified that she was hit, it was that NO ONE CARED, not ever the driver stopped, just kept rolling over her… I bawled my head off while watching this video. It makes my heart hurt to think that people could careless about the well being of the only true form of innocence in this world…..

Having been to China a number of times I know they are very cruel to animals, and while parents dote on their kids especially boys, ignoring a little girl hurt and bleeding in the street really doesn’t surprise me all that much. Serials killers first start by torturing animals and that goes on there all the time…

Wow! This topic has stired up a lot of controversy.
Thank you Kong for that link. I’m heartened to hear that something good may come out of this situation and that people, CHINESE people will start to agitate for a Good samarritan law. Poor little Yue Yue where ever you are I hope it’s a place free of pain.
I could talk about Chinese society, confusionist thinking, after effects of the cultural revolution and so on until the cows come home, but that would only serve to rattle Paradoxy and Who-farted’s cages and beside there have been too many Cola-Banana style “novels” writ on this already.
It will serve just to say China’s evolution as a modern society will continue and this event [a small ripple] will be perhaps a signpost in that. As an positive person I hope and must feel this.
Perhaps if we all went out today and engaged in one radom act of kindness? Silly , pointless exercise I know…but maybe you just might make somebody’ss day better, and it just might be me..

      • Chef Rocco

mr. weiner, as I observe, the episode really got Chinese’s nerves, China as a civilization was shamed and lost face big time at front of the whole world. But I believe that Yueyue’s tragedy will bring China some real changes.

It is well-known that Chinese culture are shame-based compared to guilt/sin based western culture. As I understand, shame-base culture has its pro and con, if you really want to avoid face-loss, you have two choices: you may want to cover shameful things up if you can, on the other hand, when shame is unavoidable or you have been shamed, the only choice you have is to try your best to get rid of the source of shame. I am optimistic….

        • Tengu

Maybe it’s a sign of things to come, a light in the wilderness and possibly the beginning of a greater movement. Hopefully her suffering was not in vain.

China has the ability to overcome this, but as my daughter the therapist says “Baby steps, baby steps.”

Unfortunately we watched this baby’s last steps, maybe the indignation will cause more feet to follow.

Better to be optimistic, if we don’t have optimism, we might as well give up. All great upheavals begin with a small event….here’s hoping, brothers.

        • Just John

I would say they could always try to follow the Japanese route, Seppuku, but since this is a “National” shame, that would result in lots of dead people…

            You’s an edumakated dude.

        • myriam

what makes you think that this episode “really got chinese nerves” ?

the vast majority of people here don’t give a shit about their fellow countrymen. Most also don’t even give a shit about their country. And as we can see most don’t even give a shit about a 2 year old girl. But they do care about what foreigners and foreign media think and report about this incident ?

Chen Xianmei, the trash collector told the media that when she found YueYue, she had one eye shut and the other open looking at her. She pulled her to the side and then went to ALL the shops in the neighborhood asking if anyone is missing a daughter and nobody responded. When she asked in several shops for help, she received everywhere the same answer, which is: “mind your own business”. And now some even have the nerves to accuse her that she just did the help the girl just to get famous ?

The only ones which i found care about some sort of face loss, are chinese which live in foreign countries, they are the ones most affected by what is reported in western media. Mainland chinese don’t give a shit. It always has been and it will always be : mind your own business ! – why you care ? – since it doesn’t effect me, why care ! While you think this could be a face loss for china as a “civilization” , you overlook and overestimate the definition of civilization, shame, and face loss in a chinese understanding. Most chinese just feel shame then they loose money, or someone else cheated them, or when they don’t like to admit that they failed to achieve certain results. Denying help to a 2 year old which is covered in blood is NOT part of the GENERAL shame/face loss mythology. The 18 which passed by didn’t feel like they were loosing face by ignoring the girl and i also doubt that the shop owners which were asked to help and denied it, feel any sort of face loss. But what they would like to see is that garbage collector feel shame, by accusing her that she did it to become famous.

I think it would be more then fair, if all the 18, the 2 drivers, AND the shop owners which denied help would have to pay for all the hospital bills of the family, lifelong further education for the girl (in case she lives), prison sentences and confiscating all the savings of the 1st and partly the 2nd driver. In addition it would be fair and would send the right sign, if they would confiscate savings from all 18 + the shop owners ( make their names and pictures public) and turn the confiscated money int into a fond which will get sure that the garbage collector will receive a reasonable lifelong pension and use this fond to help in future cases.

Face loss in china is overrated, just turn on the TV and look at all the reports where camera teams film all the cheaters in the real estate, construction, entertainment, customer service, cosmetic surgery, and many other businesses. This people just don’t care. What they do care is JUST money, nothing else. This is the only loss which can make them feel hurt, everything else is absolutely overrated.

Tengu wrote that its better to be optimistic. Hope sucks in my opinion. I can just be optimistic with people and things i know personally and in cases where i was able to learn from experiences, preferably bad ones. To assume that a major part of a nation or “civilization” which is built on corruption, selfishness and ignorance, lying and cheating, will suddenly turn into “lets care, help and love each other”, is far from any reality. This single incident was just one of too many and sadly, it will not be last one. It happened loooong before nanjing and it will also last LOOOOONG after. But NONE of that will result in the face loss you guys proclaim and “now i feel shame i am chinese”. Thats nonsense. Ask chinese in western countries, they feel shame and they have absolutely right when they say that they don’t like to have ANYTHING to do with other mainland chinese people, their government and the cold blooded mainland behavior.

          • Just John

See, it is comments like these that show you do not understand the Chinese mentality (Which I think has already been proven).

Just as most criminals do not feel shame over the action, but over getting caught, so to the Chinese will not feel shame over the fact that this occurred, but instead will feel shame over the fact that others found out and are criticizing them about it.

The concept of face is not about taking the right or wrong actions, but about getting caught in the actions and having others judge you. Ever wonder why stories that portray Chinese negatively get “harmonized” on Chinese internet? It is all about the presentation, not the substance.

          • Tengu

Motherfucker, how did I get in this with you.

Actually not that this has gone as viral as it has the shop owners and anyone who passed by swill suffer great loss of face. Human flesh searches are going on as we speak, names will come out.

All government , all of society is based on ignorance , corruption and greed, just how the world works. Slave trade, opium trade, both are what made the freemarkets. No denying that.

If you’re going to sit around sucking your thumb thinking the world is a horrible place then why bother getting out of bed.

Sit in your jammies, eat a pint of Cherry Garcia every morning and wait until you die, because in your world everyone is evil and nothing will change, cyncism will kill you in the long run.

Were these people evil, no they were shitheads, I’ve been around the block and I only met one guy who was actually “evil”, he’s “away.”

We became witness to a very bad societal issue, and a very tragic accident…actually to me it’s murder and 18 counts of accessory after the fact, horrendous, heartless and senseless. In your world if you read between your own lines this kid died in vain.

Wouldn’t you have it another way, wouldn’t you grasp on a tiny sliver of hope that something may change …even a little.

“Ask chinese in western countries, they feel shame and they have absolutely right when they say that they don’t like to have ANYTHING to do with other mainland chinese people, their government and the cold blooded mainland behavior.”

Depends on how old they are and when they came over.

They may say that to you because you are an outsider, but Chinese no matter where they live and how many generations removed they are , they’re still “Chinese”, you won’t ever hear it from their lips. They’re in the west.

          • Tengu

Myhymen, when Chef Rocco, “Christ on a Bike” Weiner and I are optimistic….that’s something.

Calm down, get you’re “Rabbit” and rub one out, smile or get laid. We know a guy, “Coal Banana”, I think you’d like him. Your literary styles are similar. Well, well you can spell, use paragraphs, are syntactically correct, more often than not you’re grammatically correct, your capitalization consistency needs work and you have a tendency to use “that” when it is understood, but you two would be a perfect match.

I’ll email him…enjoy the ginger root.

I’m an overseas chinese person, having been born and raised in Canada. This incident absolutely disgusts me and re-inforces my conviction that the average chinese “big 6 mainlander” is morally corrupt and backward-minded. It appears that all chinese citizens have brain-washed themselves into using the “Nanjing” precedent as an excuse to be complete ass-holes. This is why China will not catch up to Japan anytime in the next 100 years. Ask me if I would help the little girl if I was in that situation and risk getting sued by the parents? Damn right I would in a heart-beat!! Even if it meant losing 50k USD, I would not hesitate to help. Confucius once said “the inferior man has land, the superior man has virtue.” These words are completely lost on the people of modern China. The china of today is not nearly as great as it once was. I am proud of China’s modern accomplishments as a nation, but its citizens by and large live like miserable rats saving their nickels and dimes for a smelly and ugly 1br badly constructed apartment.

    • Ed

Being an overseas Chinese born in Canada does not a credential, however it is proven that you are stupid and weak in how you view this.

You’re probably the type to run and hides or disown your people when they make mistakes or have problems yet when they succeed you’re probably the type to ride the bandwagon.

Don’t be a coward. Don’t be so prejudiced against main landers too

Yes Confucianism should re-enter the education system but you cannot use this to support your personal hate for main landers.

      • myriam

well, he doesn’t sound like a coward to me. His post was insightful and very reasonable and is BTW the general understanding of most chinese which live in western countries. You obviously would prefer, that even after a chinese accommodate, live and work in a western society, that he still remains a hardcode selfish, ignorant , spineless coward mainlander, cheating an lying his way through life, who is looking for excuses instead of solutions ? Yeah, i guessed so.

And YOU ? call him stupid and weak ? it was your reply which was stupid and weak !

      • TraderPaul

Where may I ask are you from? Despite all the economic progress that China has made over the past 20 years, it is still one of the poorest countries in the world on a per-capita basis (ranked between 90th and 100th worldwide according to latest figures from the UN). Mainlanders for the most part are a miserable and naive lot, squandering their hard-earned money for an ugly apartment, praying everyday for “good fortune.” But I do not hate mainlanders per se because they simply have not seen the real world outside of China and do not know any better. Saying that mainlanders live like rats does not mean I hate them! I have many mainlander friends in Canada and they all say that China is ok for business but for actual living, it’s still very much a 2nd world country. China is still atleast 20-30 years behind Hong Kong, Taiwan and other first-world countries in terms of living standards for the average citizen, and perhaps up to 100 years behind Japan on a moral basis. (As an example, my friends who have lived in Japan say that you can leave a car there unlocked for ten years and everything will still be there when you return!) I have been to many parts of China and sure, the big cities have many skyscrapers and malls but that is not what makes a country great. For that matter, Dubai has the tallest building in the world and the largest mall, but does that make Dubai a great country?!

And dude, being an overseas Chinese makes a huge difference. If you have never been outside China then you will not understand how people in first-world developed countries live, interact and socialize. I do wish the best for China and its citizens, but before China can become a great country, its citizens must first become great individuals.

how in the hell can you run over a child talking about he couldnot see her.. You chiness people are #########crazy. when you did i hope you come back as a worm and a bird eats you and shit you out.

  • jeff

I have read the various comments left by people and fail to see how anyone could say anything in defence of the driver/s or people who passed by her and did nothing. The driver who hit the child and ran her over (if indeed initially accidentally), after doing so, deliberately ran her over again and slowly. The second driver likewise, did not swerve to avoid the child as you might do to avoid anything in your path, and certainly did not stop to help.
There is NO DEFENCE and any court of law in the world would not find any for such deliberate intent or the negligence of others.
It is disgusting to say the least and what I have come to expect from China, where people have no moral compass whatsoever, and life is cheap. 1000 people drown when the Yangtze river floods and nobody cares because their population is a billion. Small homeless children flood the streets begging for food, and nobody cares. Absolutely disgusting, oh and yeah, where I come from, we stop when we run over an animal too!
I have been to China and seen what things are like there, I even had police surround me pointing machine guns in my face when in a train station, I was found with a cigarette lighter in the shape of a gun in my luggage, something available in every market on every street in China. They would have thought nothing at shooting me dead and that attitude that life has no value starts at the top, China government. If you want to gauge the morality of a people, start by looking at how they treat animals, I have seen the commonplace inhumane treatment and slaughter of animals in China, cannot expect a people who do this to care for each other any better, sadly.
Politics and policies aside, morality is inside, instinctively we know right from wrong and I cannot entertain anyone who tells me different, these are gods laws, we all have them inside, even the godless!

Get your SH*T together China. What a sad comment on your society. You hate the Japanese but this wouldn’t happen in Japan. After visiting China this year I can’t believe this video. Shame on you.
