It isn’t ignoring, it’s not daring. If one were to encounter a Nanjing judge, one would be screwed.

[Note: "Nanjing judge" refers to the infamous 2006 case of a man named Peng Yu who helped a woman to the hospital after she had fallen only to have the old woman accuse him of knocking her down. The Nanjing judge in that case ultimately ruled that common sense dictated that only the person who hit her would take her to the hospital, setting a precedent that continues only further discourages and reinforces many Chinese people's wariness to help others in similar situations.]

No one wants to cause trouble for themselves. These days, everyone is busy enough with their own matters. To say these people are cold-blooded is a bit too strong. Those who want to criticize them should first ask themselves: Would you have gone to help or not?

The driver should die.
The child’s parents have some responsibility that cannot be shirked, especially the mother.
The passers-by who ignored an injured child are as low as cats and dogs, simply unbelievable.

Don’t blame the passersby, it was a Nanjing judge that killed this little girl.

网易广东省河源市网友:

Those people who walked by are animals. No, even some animals have compassion and would at the very least stop to take a look. Those 18 pigs who walked by should also be arrested and taught a lesson with 15 days [in jail]. Instead it was the waste scavenger ayi from other parts [of the country] who had a conscience.

网易浙江省宁波市网友:

Mencius taught us: The poor must look after themselves, while they rich should spread goodness throughout the world.

With regards to this incident, we first cannot blame the driver, who makes a living with his physical labor. We cannot close our eyes and demand that he bear too much responsibility, as he didn’t mean to hit someone either, and it was definitely very difficult to have noticed [the child], and afterward he was conflicted too, only he was afraid of bearing the burden of compensation and that’s why he chose to run away. I can sympathize with him. After all, running away means still having a life to live while not running might mean his life is completely ruined. Though running away means his conscience is to be condemned, how important is one’s conscience for the rabble where simply getting enough to eat is already a major accomplishment? Not betraying one’s conscience in reality is a kind of spiritual luxury.

The people who passed by are also not worthy of being blamed. To conclude that they are cold-blooded for turning a blind eye is a bit arbitrary. If it were a small cat or a small dog struggling on the ground, I think they would definitely give their attention, even kneel down to investigate the injuries, maybe even carrying them home to nurse them back to health. But when it is a child, everyone pretends they don’t see, it is always like this, almost without exception. This is not about whether or not a person is cold-blooded or not cold-blooded, but it is definitely about there being a very serious problem in society. These days, it is better to be less involved than more involved. Getting involved may very well mean getting majorly screwed. There are really too many of these kind of precedents, and everyone has silently evolved from these observations. No one is more qualified than anyone else to criticize.

Those above who are saying that our countrymen have become numb, I want to ask simply: What would you do if you ran into this kind of thing? Don’t just blame this or that on this internet post, would you risk being accused of being the perpetrator? Would you be willing to dump your entire family’s savings into the endless vortex of accident compensation? You aren’t afraid of going to jail as the perpetrator? Have you not considered that one moment of greatness could mean your entire family losing their happiness with you? Do you know just how many Nanjing judge [case results] there are? Do you think it is only Nanjing? The consequences of moral turpitude is not something that you and I can rectify. We are just ordinary people. Seeing this kind of thing, I can only describe it as heart-breaking, but I would be numb/indifferent like those 18 people…because I am a normal person!!!

And Wall Street is filled with magnanimous, kind-hearted, jolly old souls?

      • Just John

They always say Money does not buy happiness.

I always say “Give me some and I will see if you are correct”.

It’s amazing that, given most people in China lives on 2-3k RMB per month (Or less, since this is an average Beijing and Shanghai income. It is much lower in most other places), which is approximately 313-470 US dollars a month, and have to support entire families, including the in-laws, that people claim how greedy others are. What is even worse is if you live in the major cities (Like the above stated Beijing or Shanghai), it probably has a cost of living comparable to some US cities, so how much living do they actually get to do.

Yet, they are “Greedy”… Guess some people think starving to death is actually fun? I guess “Things” is a place to go to sleep at night, instead of getting rained on? Do most of these people realize that, although China has the 2nd largest single country GDP, they also have the largest population, and most of the population lives so tightly that 1 missed paycheck means they do not eat, at all?

Do any of these people commenting about the Chinese greed actually understand how the typical Chinese live? Or do they assume all Chinese live like Jacky Chan and Faye Wong?

          • Just John

Mark Clifton was right, it isn’t because of Chinese, it is because of the tomatoes.

Ninety-two point four per cent of juvenile delinquents have eaten tomatoes.

Eighty-seven point one per cent of the adult criminals in penitentiaries throughout the United State have eaten tomatoes.

Informers reliably inform that of all known American Communists, ninety-two point three per cent have eaten tomatoes.

Eighty-four per cent of all people killed in automobile accidents during the year 1954 had eaten tomatoes.

Those who object to singling out specific groups for statistical proofs require measurements within a total.

Of those people born before the year 1800, regardless of race, color, creed or caste, and known to have eaten tomatoes, there has been one hundred per cent mortality!

In spite of their dread addiction, a few tomato eaters born between 1800 and 1850 still manage to survive, but the clinical picture is poor—their bones are brittle, their movements feeble, their skin seamed and wrinkled, their eyesight failing, hair falling, and frequently they have lost all their teeth.

Those born between 1850 and 1900 number somewhat more survivors, but the overt signs of the addiction’s dread effects differ not in kind but only in degree of deterioration.

            Prognostication is not hopeful.

Exhaustive experiment shows that when tomatoes are withheld from an addict, invariably his cravings will cause him to turn to substitutes—such as oranges, or steak and potatoes. If both tomatoes and all substitutes are persistently withheld—death invariably results within a short time!

The skeptic of apocryphal statistics, or the stubborn nonconformist who will not accept the clearly proved conclusions of others may conduct his own experiment.

Obtain two dozen tomatoes—they may actually be purchased within a block of some high schools, or discovered growing in a respected neighbor’s back yard!—crush them to a pulp in exactly the state they would have if introduced into the stomach, pour the vile juice and pulp into a bowl, and place a goldfish therein. Within minutes the goldfish will be dead!

Those who argue that what affects a goldfish might not apply to a human being may, at their own choice, wish to conduct a direct experiment by fully immersing a live human head* into the mixture for a full five minutes.

            * It is suggested that best results will be obtained by using an experimental subject who is thoroughly familiar with and frequently uses the logic methods demonstrated herein, such as:

            (a) The average politician. Extremely unavailable to the average citizen except during the short open season before election.

            (b) The advertising copywriter. Extremely wary and hard to catch due to his experience with many lawsuits for fraudulant claims.

            (c) The dedicated moralist. Extremely plentiful in supply, and the experimenter might even obtain a bounty on each from a grateful community.

      @ Jo Marie

If you’re going as a foreigner, it’s very safe, probably safer than most places you go to and hang around a beach all day long getting spritzed with Evian, by some kid making a dollar an hour.

You’re relaxing in a nice resort, but the locals are kept outside.

Dominican Republic, wonderful beaches, but no one goes to Santa Domingo. They built their own airport at Casa di Campo to keep their clients out of the main airport, as soon as the locals heard the name of the resort, it was like having a bulls-eye on you.

Costa Rica – everyone goes zip lining in the rain forest, no one goes to San Jose.

Sorrento is lovely, the Amalfi is amazing, but in downtown Naples your bag will be ripped from your shoulder by kids on a Vespa within three minutes.

Rio – You’re a walking wallet to them.

Mexico City – They’ll put a gun to your head and drag you to an ATM if you’re lucky, if not they’ll kidnap you for a while.

Miami – We had guys killing, carjacking tourists. They were waiting for them outside the airport. They could spot them because of the barcodes on the rental cars.

Trust me China is one of the safest places you cant travel as a foreigner, don’t extrapolate violence against persons from a story about indifference.

      • myriam

i agree with all of your list, except DomRep.

I had a house in Casa de Campo myself and also an apartment “en la capital”. Keep “clients” out of the main airport, yes, but just out of convenience. CDC is near La Romana and the DomRep has around 10 international airports and probably just as much domestic airports, in addition i would guess that there are at least another 20 smaller “airports”. Thats quite a lot for a small island where you can drive in a couple of hours to every corner. The CDC airport is pure convenience, same like most others, cause most people which own houses in CDC actually don’t live there, so when you come to relax for just a few days or weeks, then you don’t like to go through the trouble of driving sometimes 3 hours from Santo Domingo. Just for your information. I personally never felt unsafe in Santo Domingo, the chances that someone will attack or rob you or kill you are very small compared to the south america. I think it has something to do with the caribbean mentality and lifestyle where people can live a simple life and don’t need much to make a living. Most of the locals after they earned enough to make the day and to have some spare money left to go out drinking and dancing, they will just close their shop for the rest of the day, or make a siesta.

I also disagree with you that china is one of the safest places on can (you wrote: “can’t”) travel as a foreigner. No its not, you obviously don’t know china very well. I traveled around quite often and its “relatively” safe as long as you don’t get injured, need help or assistance. Damn, even their own government don’t make a big deal out of it, or why do you think they issue warnings on the registration forms for temporary residence, point 4:

“for your own SAFETY, we should like to suggest you to live in star hotels of modern communities with advanced security equipments”

china is on of the most criminal countries in the world. When i lived in a big city center for 2 years (nice looking good neighborhood), i had 3 burglaries in my apartment and 2 attempts. My second door neighbor, an old lady, was killed by a burglar. When you walk through the public park next door, you can see injection needles everywhere. Drugs are a huge problem in china even the party don’t like to admit that. Illegal Gambling and people with debts with nothing to loose are also very common. Under aged Prostitutes, killing of female babies, everything very common.

Chinese and even most of the chinese police not having guns must have a reason. Thats the only reason, there are less killings per capita then in most of the countries you mentioned. They can’t fight and don’t own guns, so they use hack saws and knifes to commit crimes.

BTW, take all this countries you mentioned into account, and put yourself in the position of the 2 year old girl. When you could chose about in which of this countries you are laying on the floor in your own blood, injured….which one would you chose? I know that china would be at the end of MY list !

While some ARE more violent PER CAPITA ! you can expect that even in Mexico City and Rio there is NO CHANCE that in daytime in a market 18 people would just pass by this 2 year old girl.

      • myriam

BTW, china safest place ? ok, i take everything back cause i just listened to the CCTV4 morning news, the only things reported was:

        1. a washing machine exploded in KOREA !
        2. an official in TAIWAN is accused of bribery !
        3. a corruption accusation of a presidential candidate in TAIWAN !
        4. a rich business man in TAIWAN was caught employing illegal workers !
        5. an elevator stucked in Japan !
        6. oh yeah in china also something horrible happened: some taxi drivers in Beijing, refuse to take passengers during rush hour !
        7. and the ONLY other report from china: a man reported this morning to the police a small dent on the surface of his cars motor cover (sees someone sat their), and now complains that he feels that the police don’t like to follow up to find the criminal who had the balls to sit on his car.

This must be the paradise on earth, a country with 1.5 billion people and no killings, murders, rapes, drugs….CCP and chinese police must do a great job !?

          just as many domestic airports

Thats quite a lot for a small island
          S/B
That’s quite a lot for a small island

cause most people which own houses
          S/B
cause most people who own houses

are very small compared to the south america.
          S/B

I agree with Chinese Internet commentators and users that the moral of the nation of China at present is very, very , very, very low ! After China opens up for economic booms, more and more people only care for themselves, care for them to become rich, and not care for the lives of the weaker ones !
I feel very painful to hear about this very sad news and I cry.
First, the 2-year old young girl’s mother did not fulfill her duty as a mother. If she had done her duty as a mother to the girl well, the toddler would not have run out to the busy street/road.

Second, the two drivers only care about themselves and not care about the people around them especially the weaker ones around them. Their hitting Wang Yue and running away shows that they do not care about the weaker people, and that they try to run away after they did a very cruel wrong.
I suggest the Chinese Government to give death penalty to such drivers.

Third, the around 18 passers-by are selfish, heartless and wicked ! What do they mean by they are only passers-by ?
If one day their own children and relatives are run down by vans, big cars, and nobody helps their children and relatives after being badly hit by big cars, what will they feel ?

I really wish some days, the children and relatives of these around 18 standby people (passers-by) and the 2 wicked drivers WILL BE HIT BY SOME BIG CARS/VEHICLES ! For there is a Chinese saying, whatever you do (good or bad) WILL COME BACK TO you (2 drivers and 18 standby people) !

The Government of the People’s Republic of Chinese should start implementing intensive study on moral, to build a future generation who have love, compassion and who are selfless, for only with such generation, the people’s Republic of China will progress really really well !

I am an overseas Chinese, third generation of Chinese in an Asian country.

Are we forgetting, as we blame 18 bystanders, a judge, and an entire nation, that the mother of a two year old, while shopping in a busy marketplace, had no idea where the child was for at least seven minutes? You really need to hang onto kids when they are that age. Get a leash if she wanders off.

this poor little girl could have been saved.. I love chinese people and I myself live in China but this is an extremely cowardly thing -this does not show what all chinese people are like..do not make that mistake but shame on those 18 people that walked past including a mother!!!!!shame on all of you -a trap or not it was obvious that baby was dying! laying in a pool of her own blood.
the last thing she got to see was people leaving her to dye when she desperately needed help.it is even sadder that this is nit the first time things like this have happened-these things happen in many other countries as well including America and England and probably my country Australia too..shame to all those who think that this is acceptable -my deepest sympathies to yue yue’s family.may you find peace from your greaf when the people who did this to your baby are brought to justice. and all people all over the world you must not be afraid don’t be cowards if you ever see anything like this help!!!this is a very sad thing..but it cannot be changed do not greave in the past but make sure this does not happen in the future!people everywhere find your humanity and help those in need.if we are all strong and stand together to help others in need then this will not happen.
to yue yue -may your little soul rest in peace and find forgiveness to those who did this to you.so sad that the last thing you got to experience was cowards leaving you to dye.

I am very sad to hear about the tragedy of this Chinese toddler Wang Yue. My heart feel painful to learn of how she died.

From this incident, there is 3 points :

    1) the this angel’s mother was not alert to see that her daughter was not beside her or was not in a safe place.

    2) the 2 drivers are rough, careless, heartless and not honest. If these 2 drivers are careful, have heart and honest, they would not have run over the little angel. Or when they hit, they would stop their van and car and went down to help the young child. The 2 drivers are SELFISH, HEARTLESS, WICKED AND DISHONEST.

What if their children and relatives are hit and run over by a van and left to death ? Have these two drivers even thought of this ?

    3) the 18 passers-by did not help. They are SELFISH, HEARTLESS, WICKED AND SELF-CENTRED. Have they ever thought of this : one day if their children and relatives are run over by big vehicles, and ino one, no onlookers go to help their loved ones who finally bleed to death, how will these 18 passers-by feel ? These 18 passers-by are SELFISH, WICKED, HEARTLESS AND SELF-CENTRED !

I am very sad to see the standard of morality in China has become like this. It is very sad ! In the midst of pursuing for better economy and life, the people of China only care for themselves and not care for the life of others especially the weaker ones ?

  • John

It’s disturbing to see the first driver just run over the child, stop, think about it, then continue by running over the child with his back tires in his escape.
It’s disturbing to see so many ignore this child whether it’s stupidity or fear of a so-called nanjing judge.
It’s disturbing to see yet another car run over the child, does anyone in China know how to drive!!! Pull your head out of your ass!

Finally, it’s truely disturbing to read these comments. Do this many people in China feel the same way? It’s not the driver’s fault, it’s not the passing peoples fault, REALLY!!! Someone even mentioned that if it were a dog or cat they would have helped but since it was a child…..Oh My God!! You people are sick in the head!!!

  • Ben

Eventually someone cared, but enough was seen. The Chinese are a despicable people – unwelcome pieces of dirt. In Europe we hate them because they are rude and uncivilised – now we find them to be savage. Chinks are faeces.

    • mr. weiner

I’ll settle for rude and uncivilised over plain old rude anyday. Parisians [and french in general] wouldn’t condesend to give you the steam off their pisse, and other old country types aren’t much better[Europe the land of smiles?]. You find faeces in every species Benny-my-boy.

      • Crystal Brock

i work in the airport in las vegas nv and deal with hundreads of thousands of people every year. the rudest are the Chinese. and yes im educated enough to tell the diff. they dont tip they are in a hurry and are incredibly inhuman. i have never met more anti social and ignorant people in my life. the treatment of female children is especially shitty. most not all…but most need some life lessons on people skills.

        • Just John

Well Crystal, you understand they do not have a tipping culture, so using that as an example just shows you do not know much about the service industry in China.

Not sure what being in a hurry has to do with anything, since most people in an airport are normally in one of two states: Rushing or waiting.

Also unclear what you are defining as “incredibly inhuman”, since they are, indeed, human, and acting like humans, with all their vices and virtues.

As for anti-social, when you are in a country where you do not speak the language, do you run up to everyone and start babbling away? Even if you do speak the language, do you go greeting everyone as if they were your best friend? I somehow doubt that you act like that with strangers, and even if you are one of the few that is overly nice to strangers, many people do not.

How exactly would you consider them ignorant? Because they are not familiar with the cultural norms and values of the place where they are? Sure, they may be ignorant of that, but it is difficult to use that to blindly label others as “ignorants”.

So, what ways are you claiming they treat their female children shitty? My observed behavior is that they instead let their kids run wild, but again, this is not all. You also realize that female children are the most likely to be kidnapped, so it could be that they appear stricter with them simply because they fear more for them. Care to elaborate and actually logically lay out why you feel they treat them “more shitty”?

Overall, you have failed to sway me towards your way of thinking, because at the current time, you appear to be more judging them based on how you expect people to behave, instead of actually attempting to understand that they are indeed different from you, and that your understanding of Chinese may be limited.

        • Tengu

You need a lessons in cultural awareness. How can you work with hundreds of thousands of people every year and single out one culture. Your remarks have a hint of racism to them.

Why no talk about the offensive French, the imperious Germans, the smelly Bulgarians or the crazy Italians?

Hmmmm….that’s right most of them don’t go to Vegas.

Chinese love to gamble, that’s about the only generalization I would ever make about them, or the only generalization about ANY culture.

Many American people fit in that myopic lens you view the world through. I’ve been in lots of airports all over the world (some I’d like to forget about) and in any foreign country far from their own soil, the worst, most arrogant and entitled travelers without a doubt are Americans, hands down.

    • Tengu

I agree, I hate “rude and uncivilized” people myself, I’m right with you.

Unfortunately I consider using the phrase “Chinks” “rude and uncivilized.”

“…unwelcome pieces of dirt” – I believe they are in their homeland, how would they be “unwelcome.”

I can almost hear that Parisian sneer.

I thought I did a good job of channeling Sir Ben Kingsley from “Sexy Beats” at the end, but what do I know.

I must admit I put the “arse bandit” in as a mini homage to mr. weiner.

I feel bereft after his wonderful riposte, “Do you keep your head up your arse for warmth?” earlier in the week.

    • Just John

Wait, you do not want said people to go to hell?
So, are you suggesting they should all remain in purgatory, or are you advocating a position of reincarnation for them, since they cannot hibernate for eternity?

Either way, I would at least say it would be more fun to send them to hell, where devils with pitchforks will poke at them after they have been ran over by monster trucks and squished flat.

The poking of course will bring them back to their original state, where they are untouched and unsoiled, so they may be ran over again, remembering each one and the pain of it, forever.

We must also throw in some silent observers whom can, at any time, choose to step in and stop it, but instead will silently watch, making it all the worse for the hell resident, because he/she will know they could stop it, if only they would stop being cowards and just say something.

It’s sad that the child was neglected by her parents. I often see this happening in China… but I often see it in my own hometown.

What’s more, I just witnessed a fellow foreigner neglect his son in the airport at Wuhan. His wife parked the stroller about 15 yards away from them while they paid for their tickets. The child could’ve been abducted very easily; and if he were able to walk, he would have ran off.

    • 麵條

Don’t fret! Neglect is not legislated in China.
Mother gets five years for murdering her son after years of neglect, but negelect wasn’t mentioned at the trial.
Feel free to let your kids roam around and get run over, abducted, sold to an enterprising soul for his or her sexual potentialities, or even just run over repeatedly by some sick fuck that values the face on his one RMB notes more that the lives of others.
It’s a free country, sacrifice your children for the rmb.

    • Marilyn

EXACTLY. WHERE WAS THE MOTHER???? Why wasn’t she with her child? While the drivers are disgusting, I think the mother is to blame also. Yes, the mother went through a lot and people are sympathetic towards her, but it’s her fault for leaving her child alone.

This story is disgusting. I couldn’t even watch the whole video. I have a question, why did the mother let a 2 yr old out of her sight near a street?? She should be charged for child endangerment! I know mistakes happen, but watch your kids!! This may have been avoided if she was holding her daughters hand like a good mother! As for the drivers, I am not a violent person but I do believe in the death penalty for people like this. We don’t need evil people in this world. As for all the people who passed by, they are just as disgusting!

This story makes me very grateful to live in the united states. While I’m not patriotic persay, the united states seems to have more decency and compassion than a lot of other countries! I highly, highly doubt something like this would Ever happen here! However, there are crimes against children that happen everywhere (including the US) and that makes me angry. There are horrible, evil sorry excuses for Human beings lurking everywhere that inflict pain on children. I don’t tolerate this at all. There’s no excuse to cause harm to children.

I have a 4 month old daughter and I am Very protective of her. One, because I am a mother and I feel I want to protect her and Two, because I need to protect her from horrible people like these drivers that lack a heart.

If this happened on an american street the people on it would throw rocks and water ever else they could find at the van that ran her over. someone would probably even chase the van down traffic would be stopped and 911 would be called. people stop making excuses for these people who walked by, they let a dying child die. bottom line and that is very fucking sick and disturbing china needs to take a hard look at itself.

  • Creaturoid

I’m floored by this incident. As shocking as this incident is, though, so far it seems like a good litmus test for the current state of morality, atleast in terms of concern for your fellow human in his or her most innocent and helpless form.

There are laws in place in China that hinder the decisiveness of samarital actions in such circumstances, but there are similar laws in place for traffic violations, government corruption, illegally withholding wages etc.

IMHO I think the situation is as Chinese citizens often say: Complicated. Complicated in that the problem lies in many facets of society. A whimsical legal system (mo’ money, mo’ you can get away wit’), a lack of meaningful moral education from schools and parents (in both word and exemplary action) and a financially unstable environment all seem to play a hand in producing this kind of behaviour.

Obviously these kinds of wake-up-calls are not confined to China. No country is perfect. England had it’s own riot litmus test not long ago. It copped criticism and bitter-pill-advice from all sides and even hired an American ex-New York head of police. America gets there school shootings and post flood lootings and questions it’s sanity regularly as do we haha.

They attempt to use these tragedies to learn and improve. (If you want to know more, there are plenty of websites dedicated to the sociological analysis and criticism of various western nations and the negative phenomenons that happen therein.)

It might be a good idea for some responsible representatives from all walks of life here to sit down and resolve the issue. Recognise the problem and make the necessary changes. It starts from the bottom like any good change. Or barium anaema. It might not be pretty but you’ll feel relieved after.

    Go China!!

BTW As far as the losing face meter goes, this one turns in up to ELEVEN! \m/ \m/

I am so tired of hearing the excuse for ignoring that broken child based on ONE case – the “Nanjing Judge”. Something is fundamentally wrong with human beings who will not stop to offer aid to a child who lay dying in a road. There are no excuses. It is inexcusable. Period.

    • Tengu

Lot of talk about the “Nanjing Judge” as well as the “Bystander Effect”, but you’re right there’s something fundamentally wrong with the 18 who walked by her.

Also people talking about “beggars” making them suspicious, but blood and water look very different and no mistaking a normal little girl for one who’s been run over by trucks…doesn’t happen…front AND rear wheels of the first truck went over her…she was crushed…after that set of rear wheels went over her.

It is inexcusable, hopefully something will come out of it. The worst thing that could happen is to have Yueyue simply die in vain and become a statistic.

      • Dave

Yes, something positive will come out of it – lower tolerance of Westerns to their societies being overwhelmed with Chinese migrants.

        • Just John

I don’t think that is good enough.
We should also stop the inflow and outflow of money from China.
We should also stop the trade between the US and China.
We should also stop visitors from China.
We should also round up all the Chinese already in the US and put them in camps to protect us red blooded Americunts.

Even this I am afraid is not far enough.
What about the evil North Koreans?
What about the evil Mexicans swimming across our border?
What about all the evil foreign sites corrupting out youth?

I think we should stop all money flowing into and out of America.
I think we should stop all trade from the world to America.
I think we should stop all visitors from other countries coming to America.
I think we should round up all non-Americans already in the US and put them in camps to protect us red blooded Americunts.

I propose a wall, a big, giant wall. We can build it around our entire country. Or maybe a dome, since someone could try to fly over the wall. Or maybe a complete bubble, since people could dig under the dome. That’s it, we build a big bubble around the US. We can also enact a firewall. We can call it “The Great Firewall of America”. It will keep all information trying to come into America and leave America from coming and going.

That is it, we can just completely isolate ourselves from the world, so we do not have to worry about the corrupting influence of foreigners.

We can’t stop there though. Have you ever seen how uncaring New Yorkers are? We may have to make a separate bubble solely for New Yorkers. Also, what about…..

I could go on with more asinine ideas for you, Dave.

HAL: Just what do you think you’re doing, Dave?

          • Dave

Obviously you’re being sarcastic, but as a culture we have a right to protect our values. And Western v Chinese values are not aligned. And to respond to your earlier question, obviously those that are already citizens of Western countries, regardless of their ethnicity, should be treated equally. However, regarding future migration, Western countries must be selective as to what kind of human beings will make up their future societies. Now it is undeniable that there are good decent people from all cultures – but the reality is that it would be near impossible to cherry pick the decent Chinese from other potential Chinese migrants.

No, I don’t believe in protectionist trade policies – that would be a lose/lose outcome. Free trade has been shown time and time again to provide a net benefit to its participants.

          • Tengu

@Dave “Western countries must be selective as to what kind of human beings will make up their future societies.”

          • Just John

            Tengu, I am from Arizona.

The problems you see are this:
Texas has a heavy border patrol.
California has a heavy border patrol.
INS has a very limited border patrol in AZ, as opposed to Texas and California.

The conclusion that many of us have is that the feds seem to feel that just a few farmers will complain in AZ, while in Texas and California, they have major cities that would complain.

Also, for AZ, there are a couple hundred miles of empty desert, so for illegals to actually get there, they have to go through some very inhospitable terrain. This may invalidate the farmers vs. city idea we formulated, but maybe not. Either way, hundreds of people die of dehydration trying to walk across the desert. Others find rattlesakes that wish to play.

Anyways, none of this directly addresses your issue. Yes, AZ has some of the most insane politicians. Why? I think maybe their brains cook in the heat. You can literally cook an egg on the sidewalk in Phoenix, and get second or third degree burns walking around barefoot.

Point of my inane rambling is that not Arizonans agree with some of the stupid shit they pull.

As for the immigrants, I worked for the City of Phoenix, and my daily job dealt mostly with Mexicans. I used to be on the side of closing the border. They come in floods, stealing our jobs, bringing higher rates of crime, and all that jazz. Eventually, I started trying to rationally think about it and studied other information on it. You start to realize the jobs they do. Can you imagine a white, all American guy on his hands and knees, scrubbing the floor mats of your car, for $5.15 per hour (The minimum wage in AZ when I lived there still)?

They take the jobs that others do not want, because others either feel it beneath them or they refuse to do it for the amount of money offered. They have actually created more jobs than they have “taken from all us honest, hard working true Americans”. Why? Because they allow businesses that could not do business to function and thrive, like maid services, car washes, restaurants, golf courses, etc. These businesses then give back to the community, whether it is more taxes paid to help the civil services, or attracting out of state Doctors, Lawyers, COEs, whatever to play golf in nice, 60 degree weather while their home states are being buried under snow, helping the airline industry, the taxi industry, the recreational industry, etc.

To add on top of this, immigrants that pay taxes do not gain the benefits. All those social security payments taken out of their income (In this case, I mean the ones that are actually there legally, and working legally, with all the burdens based on it) are not then later paid to them. This allows you and me, the actual American born, to be able to actually withdraw on this service, which without things like this, would be even more bankrupt than it already is.

They allow us to get our cheap services, so my car wash costs me $15, instead of $100. They also help bolster our employable persons, or does everyone forget about our currently aging and retiring population? If you want to see what that does to the economy, look at Japan.

Later, they have kids, who grow up to be American, and to contribute to our society the same as everyone else, no longer being the “dirty, unwashed masses” of illegal immigrants.

While I still believe some actions should be taken, by the same token, I also realize that there is a need for these demographics.

Anyways, my thoughts as an “Arizonan scared of his own shadow”.

  • Blars

I’m not so sure I would have noticed that girl. The area seems to be a bit dark and shady. I’ve been all over China, like many of you i’m sure, in city markets where oil, pigs blood and water are all mixed up into a filthy soup and children run and crawl around in it while their parents sit and play mahjong or cards or just talking gossip. She looks like she’s part of the “landscape”. What I don’t understand is how the second driver didn’t see that there was something lying on the ground. But that is something else i’ve noticed is that many Chinese are half blind and the way many drivers run a red light would suggest that half of the driving population are colour blind as well. We can blame the drivers and maybe even the passersby but how about the parents? Life in this country isn’t worth much, just read the Chinese news everyday and this site to see that. When I ask Chinese why they don’t change when and as the country is developing their only answer is ” China is too big and people too many”. Sorry, that is just an excuse to carry on as always, no one wants to take responsibility. Only responsibility a Chinese has is towards the family, everything outside the family means nothing. This is only my oppinion and it doesn’t mean shit just like any other comment on this site.

          • Tengu

Sounds liker a great project, love to see the script.

Now we can get some real feedback on all the hypotheses floating around here.

Will some of them actively pursue their prurient pleasures, will some simply walk by paying no attention while anal fury takes place before their eyes, will some just stand around staring quietly with their hands behind their backs.

Will a girl blow your intrepid protagonist and subsequently while wiping her chin, start screaming it’s his fault his dick wound up down her gullet and demand compensation exceeding your entire budget?

Conceptually brilliant…I would shoot in a cinema verite style in black and white…then you can probably get a grant from the government for the US version.

We’ll be done shooting soon…need any extras? I’ll forward some headshots and my SAG card over.

          • 麵條

While black and white may lend more to the imagination, I am going to shoot the film in colour and in widescreen format.
Rest assured, all actors will be screen tested thoroughly beforehand, for which I may require the services of a professional casting agent to assist me. This will guarantee the prevention of any false accusatory said leeking chin manifestation, in addition to providing employees with a good old fashioned bonding session before shooting begins.
Extras will be recruited locally, including the token dope smoking rasta hat wearing dreadlocked foreign bloke and his sarong wearing woman.
However, if during shooting script changes are made to suit a possible change in environment, I’ll keep you in mind.
I’m gonna have my work cut out for me directing and playing the lead role, so the possibility of a stunt double may exist for the…less palatable scenes.

If you feel the need I’ll lend you J.J for anyone new to the “industry”…he’s usually so busy pontificating and instigating out here, that he never knows what’s going on behind himself…I like to think it’s part of his charm!

Pullies and winches I won’t be needing, all the camera work will be done ala doco real life hand held style. Cheers for the offer anyway.

It seems that this tragedy will sadly be repeated over and over again until human beings are regarded as sacred and not as a number. Supposively, Chinese people care so much about their own family, but not about their own. In my humble opinion, everyone is to blame since Yueyue was just a two year old child who needed to be under constant supervision.
I read another story about a five year old boy getting clipped in the ear by a big dump truck, and was knocked down. Once the boy stood up, the dump truck back up and purposely ran him over and tangled up his body in the dump truck’s wheels. What was his reasoning? It will only cost him 20,000 RMB if the kid is dead, but will cost him hundreds of thousands of RMB if he is hurt.
Chinese people don’t care about anyone else but themselves. There are animals that are more compassionate to another species moreso than the Chinese are compassionate to other Chinese people. Has this disregard for human life existed in this country for thousands of years? One would think that a culture that dates back nearly 5,000 years would progress socially far beyond every other civilization and actually have something to teach the others. It seems that China never learned one of the most essential lessons to be learned to exist in any society: compassion for others.

Correction – they care about their family only as far as their reputations are concerned.

For instance, lets say unfortunately an adult daughter grows up to be a hooker.

Western parents – disappointed but usually still love and accept their daughter.

Chinese parents – reject their daughter. After all, loss of face is more important than a parents’ love.

        • Just John

I guess the whole “losing face as a nation” thing went over your head then?

‘So if you assemble an igloo, ensuring that the blocks are sealed together in the manner briefly described above… you’ll find that oranges take on an entirely new dimension when sprinkled with a small amount of ginseng.’

          • Dave

Tengu – Boris made the following comment to John Dalton: ” If we were sat in a bar right now and I heard you spouting your manifesto, it would take divine intervention to stop me from putting a broken bottle in your fucking face.”

          • Tengu

            @ DAVE

            Hence my statement:
“If you’re referring to the “broken bottle in the face” thread, well, I agree with him!”

The person you reference (JD) )was being a total asshole and wouldn’t give an inch, he was an overbearing and self righteous prig, in fact I stated in that thread, I’d put money on Boris. So I guess I would be as culpable as the B-Man.

            Now in comparison:
You made a point and I guess I would have to agree there is validity to your statement. For the 1-3% of hookers (pulling that figure totally out of my ass), who DO come from good functional homes with loving families, I guess I would have to agree with you. In a situation like that they probably would love their child regardless,

Even then, I would hazard a guess that there is a percentage within the “healthy hooker family group” who wouldn’t want a thing to do with her.

As stated previously my kid deals with them all the time, she’s a Therapist and a professor, sadly the physical abuse, sexual abuse by relatives/family is highly under reported (two words??) in the USA, I can’t speak for the rest of the world.

Court system is still pretty backward when it comes to the reasons for rape and many families just hide the incest/sexual abuse/dirty uncle, but the damage to these kids is already done.

3 minutes of diddling and a lifetime of sexual dysfunction, substance abuse or a recycle of physical abuse.

No idea what the number/percentage of mentally healthy hooker/strippers/pornstars is, but you do make an interesting point, there HAS to be some, how many…who knows.

        • Tengu

“Western parents – disappointed but usually still love and accept their daughter.”

Would be curious to know what percentage “usually” is. Most come from dysfunctional families with a high percentage of substance abuse, sexual abuse and physical abuse in the home, so it would seem they fail to “love and accept them” to begin with.

Most hookers and strippers are not coming out of Harvard or Smith with a 4.0 GPA saying, “I have this great education, my parents adore me, but I think I’m going to start flashing my snapper on stage while hanging upside down for dollar bills, maybe I’ll work the Champagne room, blow a few hundred guys then start work on my doctoral thesis.”

I found out my daughter was blowing guys behind a dumpster for $20 or a couple of rocks, I’d not sure what I’d do. Probably ask for the $150K her education costs back for starters, but she’s making a small fortune treating the abused girls you mentioned.

          I’m guessing you don’t have a daughter?

          • Dave

At least, a rebuttal with a measure of intelligence.

Yes, I agree, most hookers do come from highly abusive families. However, a substantial number don’t, even if we are talking a substantial minority.

If we look at situations where an adult prostitute had normal Western parents (ie non-abusive) then yes, I am confident in saying that such Western parents would not reject their daughters in such an instance.

  • curl of the burl

What would you do? It’s obvious. So the other option would take some serious argument to justify especially for a place that fanatically restates their love for their country and countrymen at every opportunity. Dying 2 year old girl vs …? no argument. It’s easy to say in theory but put yourself in that situation and then ask the previous question.

Yes, it’s true that there are laws and attitudes in place in China that affect the decisiveness of good samarital actions in such circumstances but there are similar laws in place for traffic violations, bribery, corruption, work safety, food hygiene etc.

IMHO There are some things that can be left to cultural differences but for a place that aspires to and, in some places, boasts wealth and modernity, this situation (especially occurring in a comparatively wealthy part of China) is a moral litmus test that produced greatly undesirable results.

    Situations.

England had their recent riots. The country went into a state of moral questioning and recieved harsh criticism and advice from the MASS MEDIA and various countries and groups. They even brought in an ex-New York head of police security expert. Bad things happened. Killing and beating innocent people, looting stores and attacking police. It was just wrong. There was a problem.

America had there post-flood lootings and school shootings. They went into a state of soul searching and MASS MEDIA bashing of the institutes involved. (Nobody bashes American institutions like Americans e.g. the daily show, south park, jay leno, the colbert report etc.) It was just wrong. There was a problem.

Australia had the biggest mass shooting on record in Tasmania. The country was brought to it’s knees. It was just wrong. There was a problem.

People are made aware. It is brought to attention and the relevant parties attempt to learn from it and bring preventative measures into affect.

The article states people were indifferent to a perceivably seriously injured, innocent, helpless child. There is a problem.

It could be a good idea to make people aware, have the problem brought to attention and have the relevant parties attempt to learn from it and bring preventative measures into affect.

Besides the people directly involved, the relevant parties involved could include (from a sociological perspective, 18 out of 19 people would make the figure of about 90%) about 90% of Chinese people, the education department, the transport department, the courts and social services.

As with any moral change in the people, like a barium anaema, it’s gotta start at the bottom. It’ll be uncomfortable but you’ll feel relieved afterwards.

I’m not comparing China and Timbuktu. I’m saying there is no comparison. We all have the same value. I would think my Chinese friends would agree their injured child has every right to be helped by their fellow comrade just as much as a child in any other country. I don’t represent any country. Horrible incidents happen all over the world. They should be treated as such. Callin a spade a spade, It was just wrong.

BTW Unless Foshan Hardware market is some freak black hole of morality in a typical modern southern Chinese city then the statistic stands true as it is the only true situation where this statistic can be drawn from.

If there was a national face losing meter, then this baby turned it up to ELEVEN!!! \m/ \m/ (no pun intended)

I live in China… Im from England… Many in China will not help, because in china if you help someone, they think you have money and blame you, even if its not your fault. It’s all about money, if you drive an electric bike no-one will move, if you hit them you pay money, thats how it is here. Very cold feelings, but it’s “normal” here.

I come from Australia and live in China- I have helped injured people, lost children, old people cross roads – seven stopped fights…. it’s about having the courage and conviction to do what’s ‘right’ no matter what ‘it’s’ like in China

It’s good doing the right thing, but “the right thing” in china is usually not “the smart thing”. Don’t patronize us, we are good people too and alot of us want to do some good for our brothers.

But we’re not idealist, don’t blame us, blame it on our government. They beat it out of us since we’re a kid. We just don’t like harming ourselves while doing good.

  • Sad china

Everyone in this video made the choice to ignore this helpless child who was in need, they should be punished it doesn’t matter what judges in the past had ruled because at that moment this little girl was in pain and needed help.
What if it was their child or someone they knew?? Would they have continued to drive over them or walk by and still do nothing???
All it took to save her was call for help but no one did.

The first driver, I hope he is losing sleep every day & night he doesn’t own up & when he does his punishment should be taken light because when he chose to drive away instead of helping her he allowed everyone else to do so!

I hope this video open up china’s peoples eyes to see that looking out for each other especially our children whether it’s ur child or not needs more attention.

  • Mad Mexicans

yes I cannot blame all chinese people. but I do blame all of those who lack morality and do evil and those who see evil and do nothing about it. How can you leave an inocent child lying helpessly on the floor in pain and simply just walk by her?!this message goes to not only china but to all the countries who do these atrocities, how can you make a better world if you can’t help an innocent life. The change starts within yourself and they get mad when they are judged, well let me tell you 18 people saw this 2yr old baby and only one had the heart to help her! In my calculations 90% of chinas poeple can go fuck themselve and 10% God bless you and may God give you the strength to keep helping. And parents if your going to have kids fucking take care of them, don’t let them wonder around. May it be a lesson to these chinese parents who lost there kid in a ridiculous accident that could have been prevented.

  • Chadwick

The sad thing is, is that this happens all over the world. Even here in Canada I can’t believe how many people ignore those who are in distress.

But how do parents let a 2 year old child out of their sight especially in a hardware market that is very busy with so many dangerous items.

  • Meh

That’s fucked up, that trucker and those peds should all get the death penalty. Is this what human life is in China, a statistical number?

  • Kong

I love all the posts that go something like, “I’m not racist, but racismracismracismracismracismracismracism”.

Yo people, if you generalize an entire group of people into absolutist categories and then make blanket moralizing statements based on those categories, YOU ARE RACIST. Racists will use any opportunity to express their racist views, even the poor death of a two-year-old chinese girl.

It is said that there are no “racists”, only “racist remarks”, but honestly if you find yourself repeating the same racists remark over and over, you may find that that is what defines you to other people.

:P Just stopping by, seeing as how this thread is still going.

    • curl of the burl

Chinese are not a race but I understand your quibble. Furthermore, it was manslaughter/murder/hit and run. Not a ‘poor’ death. The prejudice rhetoric aside, I dare say that they are hitting the nail on the head in acknowledging there is a serious problem. But I agree. Leave ethnicity out of it.

Looking at the video the problem seems more so in the thinking and the factors that led to the kind of thinking, that the people who wandered by possess. I think the extreme behaviour shown in this incident will, by it’s very nature, bring out some culturally critical javelins.

Without straying from the issue though, overall, people are shocked and they should be. Hopefully if they are shocked enough, they might act on their disgust, analyse the problem and solve it.

      • Kong

I fail to see your point. No ethnic group is a “race”. “ethnicism” (or “ethnocentrism”) are unpopular (or inconvenient) terms, so the (slightly dated) term “racism” is used.

“Poor” is an adjective, to describe the manner in which the girl died. It is apt. “manslaughter”, “murder”, “hit-and-run” are all legal terms that imply more knowledge about the circumstances than any of us have.

Since you’re pointlessly correcting grammar, you ought to have written “prejudicED rhetoric”.

Considering the topic and subject of most of these posts is how Chinese (as an ethnic category) are all [insert racist remark here], I would venture to say that none of them have hit any nails on any head. Acknowledging a serious problem via racism is more like hammering a screw into one’s own reflection; just fucking everything up.

Neither the video nor pictures have the ability to convey thought or contextual factors. It is the mass commentary that colors such things in.

Perhaps people ought to be shocked, but there is no such thing as “shocked into racism”. If people ought to be shocked, then using the incident as an outlet for racism should be equally as shocking.

        • curl of the burl

I probably should have explained my point better. The point is that what happened in the video is wrong and the prejudice being shown by SOME commentators is based on the events that took place in the video. Not skin color or a predisposed prejudice.

Your use of ‘poor’ I took as meaning sad and regrettable which IMHO doesn’t aptly describes the event of her death. What happened was criminal. The ‘legal’ terms would actually describe the event perfectly unless we are writing a shakespeare tragedy. These terms are commonly used in speech and literature, in particular, reports and articles.

The video runs for almost 5 minutes.

We can see the events preceding her death. We can see the event of her death and we can see the aftermath. What from the video would contradict the usage of the aforementioned terms?

I’m not correcting your grammar. I’m expressing my opinion that your use of words can be misleading. Not your grammar.

How therefore should people deduce thoughts or contextual factors? We are given a 5 minute video and an article explaining the circumstances around the incident. People will make of it what they will. Hence the comment board. What do you make of it?

Some commentators are being overtly prejudice. “But I agree. Leave ethnicity out if it.” As I said, I’m not defending that. Some people are just that way. I think it’s fair to say it comes with the job when you’re reading posts on this site as fauna has pointed out. But the reaction of being shocked, I do agree with.

It’s relieving to see that the majority of people are not trying to justify condone or defend the actions of the perps. That would have been worse than “prejudiced rhetoric” which will and often does rear it’s ugly head when such horrible cases are reported on.

“Perhaps people ought to be shocked, but there is no such thing as “shocked into racism”.” I disagree. This is exactly the kind of thing that makes racist thoughts and comments where there previously was nigh. It’s wrong but it happens. The disgust that the video generates brings out the worst in human nature. We see it all the time.

Some people, regardless of race or ethnic background, that normally write a quite unbias and logical comment, can become quite extreme after viewing, say, a 2 year old girl being hit, knowingly run over again and then ignored by 17 people. They get angry, distraught, appalled (insert negative emotional response here) as shown in numerous posts and make off the cuff, angry, generalized and, wait for it, racist comments.

Some Chinese netizens have similar reactions:

          “Truly very painful!
The majority of us Chinese people are already considered abnormal!”

“The Chinese people have arrived at their most moral-less moment!”

          And there’s many more.

Racism and prejudice does fuck everything up but my main point is that what happened in the clip is wrong. Legally, emotionally, culturally. Period. People deserve better. All people. Most people here agree on that. I’m sure we can agree on that.

How to fix the problem? Where to start?

          • Kong

Yes, it is irrational for someone to watch an incident like this where a bunch of individuals appear to ignore the little girls, and extrapolate that to an ENTIRE ethnic group. No, in order to make such irrational leaps, the racist thought must already be there. Furthermore, the posters about whom I am referring have *repeatedly* affirmed their racist remarks rather than doubling back to check them. That’s inexcusable.

You don’t consider a little girl being run over as “sad” and “regrettable”? That’s odd. Everything about the event was “sad” and “miserable”, from the way the girl died to the inaction of the passers-by.

Those legal terms define INTENT, and are not observations. Without knowing the intent of the involved persons’ actions, such legal terms cannot be properly applied. IF, as it’s been considered, that one of the drivers or passers-by did not realize that she was there, then *none* of those terms apply. The nature of the event, however, still holds true as observed.

Do explain how my words were misleading. I described how an event appeared. “Poor” was an apt description. “Shitty” is also acceptable.

Nobody asked you to deduce intent or context. you decided to because just like everyone else, you LOVE gossip. Everyone’s commentary as well as the accompanying article ought to be read in a critical light.

“Some people are just [racist]“. Uhm, good observation? Yes, some people are just racist, and they like to express their racism wherever they get an opportunity. Like on message boards; like on a message board concerning the death of this kid. Jsut because some people are “just [racist]” doesn’t mean I need to ignore and dance around it. Their prejudice throws their entire argument into question, just as it would in court. Moreover, as a voice against racist propaganda, I aim to deter the notion that racism is “normal” and “okay”.

I don’t see how there is any difference between defending a cultural tendency toward apathy and defending a cultural tendency toward racist hate speech. Maybe you do, but I really think you ought to re-examine the two issues.

You are inserting causality where it doesn’t belong. Just because you *notice* racist remarks more when discussing a “shocking” event, doesn’t mean that the shocking event *caused* the racism. The event was merely an outlet for preexisting racist thoughts to be expressed. Having observed certain posters over time, it’s pretty clear that they harbor a long-standing and determined racism.

Again, there is no connection with the shocking and emotional incident and the racist generalization that goes with it. A non-racist response, though equally emotional, would not assume that this only happens in China or that only Chinese are this heatless. Such an immediate leap can *only* be caused by ignorance and preexisting racism. It has already been shared how similar incidents happen all over the world, and *yet* the same posters continue to defend their racist remarks. Sorry to break it to you, man, but they haven’t been “shocked into racism”. They are spreading ignorance and hate even when they know better. That’s racist.

Even you should be keenly aware of the difference between a criticism and a self-criticism. Generalized comments about ones own culture demonstrate despair and a desire to reflect. Generalized comments about another culture usurps their voice in an attempt to patronize and exert power over. That’s the basic crust, and the nuances go on top.

Yes, most people agree that all people deserve better than what happened in the video, but I refuse to do as you do, and use that an an excuse to paint a large brush over all the racism and bigotry I see raising its ugly head here.

          • curl of the burl

I’m not sure you understand my comment in respect to the terminology describing her death. I said IMHO I think it doesn’t suit. I was thinking from a legal perspective. It looked like a criminal action on the part of the driver to me. How criminal? We can’t say, as you pointed out. Hence why I said 3 different legal terms. Under Chinese law, it will at the least it be manslaughter (unintentional killing). At the worst, murder (intentional killing). As for the rest, we only have the video to go by. So people, being the curious problem solvers that they are, will try to fill in the blanks. Hence the comment board.

I’m not sure you read my comment properly. I said some people react in this way. I’m not painting all racist remarks with this phenomenon. I’m not defending people who obviously have a long history of spewing out racist remarks on this board. I’ve stated there are SOME netizens that have these knee-jerk, misguided emotional responses. That’s why hardcore racists can reform. Or how closet white racists start working with african americans, inadvertently make friends and then, all of the sudden, black people are cool dude! Because it’s not some permanent state of mind or mental disease. As you’ve pointed out in your statement of criticism/self criticism, human nature is more complex than that. I think our understanding of human nature and it’s over-reactionary tendency is somewhat different. Heard of mob rules anyone? Note: Chinasmack is for netizens comments, opinions and reactions.

I’ve never left a comment on Chinasmack until this post. So that would make my total comments about 10. That would mean you’ve deduced the context of my opinion and deduced my intent which is that I love gossip (Cheers for the personal attack, man) from those comments. You’re goood. So what colour underwear am I wearing? I apologize if I got carried away with trying to analyse what’s been given and make a constructive commentary.

So ….. Does this mean you’re only allowed to comment on or criticize your own country? or is it any western country, but not China? If so, why does this board exist then?

But again, I regress. I’m TRYING to see the problem for what it is and throw some constructive solutions on the table. Not just give an emotionally charged response or criticize/defend others comments. Not my goal. Maybe try to do the girl some justice.

What do you think is the problem with the incident shown? What are some possible solutions? Feel free to throw some light on the issue. “Pass on what you have learned” (in lame yoda voice).

BTW You’ve attacked me personally now so does that mean I win the ‘Chinasmack flame shield’ as a reward or something? Or is that World of Warcraft? :p

          • Kong

I’ll first deal with your claim of ‘personal attack’. Saying that everyone likes gossip, and including you among the “everyone” does not make for a personal attack. It doesn’t even make for an attack. If this is not what you are referring to, please guide me in the proper direction.

“Poor” is not a legal term. In this sense, you are correct. You are incorrect, however, if you are assuming that everyone here is speaking in a legal context. In this case, then, while it would be improper for *you* to use “poor” in your comment, it is perfectly fine and to my point that I used “poor” in my comment. Overall, though, since your gripe with the word “poor” was in RESPONSE to my usage, it is you who misinterpreted my post (or rather, just laid out your own agenda on top of mine and claimed be to be at fault).

Again with your “some”. You replied to *my* comment. *My* comment was directed at a very specific majority of repeat posters. That was MY point. If you decided to lay out your point that not everyone was that way, then you could have done better to imply it.

Just because someone over-reacted doesn’t make their racist remarks *not* racist. Maybe some people to reflect a little and realize that what they said was racist, but that doesn’t delete the racism from those words. As posters, we are all defined by our words. If someone posts one racist thing and leaves, then that poster is functionally racist, regardless of whatever else they do with their lives. That is why we have these conversations: to clarify and correct. I’ve read a good majority of these posts from the beginning, and VERY few of the posters of racist remarks have bothered to reflect on them/take them back. And every time, more and more posters will come on the board and post racist things. While it’s likely that they haven’t taken the time to read others’ comments and reflect, I hardly feel that laziness is an excuse to be racist.

I deduced your arguments from what you wrote and nothing more. As opposed to these people captured on video, people who post their commentary do so with the purpose of demonstrating their intent. If there is a miscommunication, it is either due to poor word choice or careless reading. Either way, all I have to go on is what you’ve actually written.

No, it doesn’t mean you are only allowed to criticize your own country, nation, ethnic subgroups whatever. What it means is that when you start criticizing others, you venture into vastly different territory with its own rules. It is up to every person to be aware of this, and it is what the entire field of “intercultural communication” is all about. As I said, the nuances go on top.

If you are not criticizing/defending others’ comments, then what was the purpose of your original reply? In any case, I cannot really see how you are tangibly doing anything to solve anything. This is a comment board, not a legislative or judicial committee. Everything that goes on here is gossip and postulation. I’d love to see how you personally do the girl any justice by postulating about the legal issues from miles away. Perhaps by “justice”, you mean honoring her memory by talking about the circumstances of her death? Perhaps I can buy that, but I’ve already written enough in this topic.

I try not to repeat what other have said (which is why I read everything first), and there have been many interesting things said. My goal in posting is to counter what I see as non-constructive emotional and racist ramblings that justify horrible statements while hiding behind a [submit somber adjective of your choice] death.

Really, I think that’s about it. I apologize if you felt that I personally attacked you, but I cannot see where I have done that. Gossip is gossip, and everyone does it.

          • curl of the burl

I think we have different goals here. One man can make a difference if he puts his mind to it. I respect your argument and enjoy the swordplay.

I think the internet, especially in China is a powerful tool. I’d hope that interesting and constructive comments (ours included :) )do generate thought into the nitty gritty of the post or , at the very least, some attention. Agreed that people have to be careful what they say.

That’s it for my fling with Chinasmack. Nothing to see here people …. move along, move along ….

            RIP post! :(

I was heartbroken and disgusted with the china’s morals and being so inhumane..I get the point that they don’t help because the victim might blame them but where is your morals and braveness to save a human life. The country may have this fucked up law Nanjing but as human it is with in ourselves to preserved and value life. I don’t get it how they believe in Budhism when one of Buddhism belief is:”The purpose of life is to develop empathy for all living beings without prejudice and to work for their good, happiness, and peace.” For those people who passed by the little girl I hope that “you would loss sleep at night and see that little girl crying for her life in your dreams” Just like they said “Karma is a Bitch”..if the chinese people are true Buddhism and follows their belief then you know what “karma” can do!…And for the first driver you ought to be run over just like that girl and for the second driver same.

A friend of mine posted this video on his FB page. I wasn’t sure what I was about to watch. Had I known what this video contains, I wouldn’t have watched it. With that said…the 2 driver who ran over a helpless child and the passersby who just kept walking as if nothing happened…makes me sick to my stomach. I don’t care what country you’re from but that was just wrong. They are responsible for the death of this innocent child…doing nothing in this case makes them murderers. I am seriously nauseated by these animals.

And those who side with these people? I cannot fathom what goes on in your head!! Seriously?? You’re making up excuses for them? Put yourself in the kid’s and/or her family’s situation. Pretend that that little girl was YOUR daughter or someone you love? how would you feel if people just kept walking and treated your child like a ran over squirrel/raccoon?

I hope their conscience would eat them up and I do pray that someone would testify against the drivers who did this…and bring justice to this kid’s death. But I know she’s in a much better place now.

I am sad to learn about this hit-and-run of the 2 drivers and the 18 passers-by who only care for making money and about their own selves.

The morality of people in China today has reached its lowest. In Kwangdong which is situated at the southern part of China, there is a lot of influence from outside, and people only think of making money, not care for other people’s lives !

To me, thedfirst driver should die. The second driver should be given life-term in jail. The passersby should be fined 80,000 yen !

I believed some people must have prayed for Wang Yue, the little angel who was hit and left to die while she was still alive in the hospital. I want to believe that her soul is in Heaven now, and she does not need to suffer in that rotten society in Kwangdong ! I salute the rubbish collector who did a great thing in morality ! Being a rubbish collector, she has the heart to care for others ! Her acts are a model to many Chinese who are pursuing for wealth !

I will always remember the rubbish collector, Chen, and the toddler who was hit by 2 cars and left to bleed to death, Wang Yue.

Yes, again I salute Chen, the rubbish collector and the 2 year old toddler, Wang Yue.

Perhaps helping someone else in a time of need would be considered reckless since I too have a family. But I would take the chance anyway. Why? Because I am a human being and have compassion for others. And I want other people to do the same for me. Those who disagree should put your families names on the internet so we will know who we should not assist. (I would anyway and may go to jail) The judges in these cases are fools and I will help a fellow human being no matter the consequences.

    • Shawn

I don’t give a rat’s behind where you (or I ) are from. We need to start helping one another before it’s too late. Asian, african, european, or american, it shouldn’t make a difference. If someone is hurting or in trouble, help them if you can. Screw the government, politics, societal norms, whatever… Help your fellow human. Next time you’re in need it may come in handy.

  • Simon

This case really defines the word ‘development’. Chinese people think that they can build a few skyscrapers and buy expensive cars and suddenly their society is ‘developing quickly’. This is not what development means. True development is reflected in the way that people treat each other. People have posted on here things like ‘would you risk getting in trouble’ or ‘would you risk your savings’. As a citizen from a country which is developed I say without hesitation YES. Furthermore if I was presented with a choice of giving up my own life to save a child’s life, even a child I didn’t know, I would say YES. The damage that this has caused China on the international satge is massive. All the work you did at the Olympics and the Expo to show the world that you are ‘developing’ has been shown up for what it is. It takes more than a few fireworks and a Bird’s Nest stadium guys. You’re missing the point.

A friend of mine went to crowded India and saw a man crying that he had fallen into a hole. Everyone was just passing by and ignoring him, so she helped him out.

Perhaps it has something to do with large and dense populations. New Yorkers are also oblivious like this, to remember the Viola Liuzzio case.

Horror!!! I am speechless and shocked not only by this report but also by comments written by some Chinese here. What smells badly in this forum is selfishness. The economic growth of the country is impressive, but people there don’t seem to have developed understanding about human values and compassion. Shame on you people !!!!!
