4-Year-Old Daughter Rented Out, Comes Back Abused & Scarred

Ren Fangfang was "rented" to an "acrobatics troupe" only to come home 3 years later full of scars from abuse.

The following video was uploaded yesterday on popular Chinese video sharing website Youku has already received over 720k views, and 2100 comments spanning 70 pages.

From Youku:

Outrageous! Parents rent out their child to be a child beggar who if did not beg enough would have her tongue cut, ears cut, and be forced to eat feces

Four years ago, 8-year-old Ren Fangfang was taken away from her father for 5000 yuan by Mengtang Village “acrobatic troupe” boss Zhai Xuefeng to “learn acrobatics”.

Once she left, she was gone for 3 years. During this time, the Ren family also received a lump sum of 10,000 yuan cash. One night last year, Fangfang was dressed orderly and delivered back to her family. It wasn’t until the next day that Ren Shangtian discovered that she was missing two large clumps of her hair, that her entire body was covered with scars, that her ears, nose, and tongue had been abused, that there is “a large bulge” on her lower back.

It turns out that during her three years away, Fangfang was forced onto the streets to beg, and if she could not meet her goals she would face beatings. “Used a belt to hit me. Used a nail to prick my hand, until it bled; Picked me up and threw me on the ground, used scissors to cut my ears, nose, and tongue; Also had me eat feces…”

After Fangfang with a body covered with scars returned, Ren Shangtian took her to the hospital for a check-up and upon discovering that there are already aftereffects [emotional trauma] left on the child, he went to find Zhai Xuefeng where he got 22,000 yuan as compensation and even signed an agreement.

How could he bear to let his 4-year-old Fangfang go “learn acrobatics”? Ren Shangtian helplessly said that their family is poor, that sending his child out to “learn acrobatics” was to lesson the burden. As for the 37,000 yuan of money that was obtained through Fangfang, Ren Shangtian says it has already all been spent.

Most of the above description for this video is from an earlier, longer article available on QQ which also has over 2000 comments. This video also currently appears at the top of the special Youku page dedicated to the continuing Chinese netizen campaign to rescue child beggars that we reported earlier this month.

yzh天河之水:

First investigate this father’s responsibility/culpability! Why [did he] send his child away [like this]?!?!

What kind of father would do this…renting out their daughter…and to a circus troupe… Beast.

Fuck…this people are truly TM worse than beasts… [and] this child’s parents are also suffocatingly stupid!

wildcat7305:

You as a father still have the face to come forth!? For 5000, you rented out your underage child to an acrobatic troupe for 4 years without checking up on her, showing just how selfish and cold-blooded you are inside! You are not fit to be a father~! You and the acrobatic troupe are both garbage!

主流爱鸿基小猪: (responding to 北京奥运会08)

Saying he is a beast is an insult to beasts!

What kind of parents [are these]? Even renting out their children? And they have the face to talk about it? That child must hate her parents to death.

Dog fart parents, if you’re not going to raise them up properly after giving birth to them, then why did you have them in the first place? And you even have the face to talk about it. Looking at your age, your must be yet another bastard who prefers sons over daughters. How come you didn’t rent out a boy? You must have a lot of children at home.

That the child suffered so much indignities the father bears the most guilt. If it was to find a way for the child to eat, why didn’t you go work harder? Renting out the child is truly inhuman!

Why would they send away their child if it were not because their family is poor and they wanted to give the child a way out [alternative, opportunity]?

Parents definitely love/care for their children, [so] Daddy Ren must have had a predicament [to have done what he did]. What he did is of course wrong, but Daddy Ren must not have known that person would treat his daughter that way. When he first sent his daughter away, he must have felt very bad too, believing it was for his daughter’s good, never imagining that…. Really, if you’ve never experienced poverty, how would you know that life is like?

A social problem/issue. No job, child can’t afford to go to school, the father must not have thought that it would end up like this.

hhhhdhhhh: (responding to sasassas3333)

He already explained, he had lent her to learn acrobatics, to make a living as a performer, he too didn’t think it was to abuse his child. In China there are still many places where people are so poor they don’t have food to eat. He originally want [her] to learn a skill so she could feed herself… Had he known that his child would end up like this, I imagine he too wouldn’t be so inhuman as to have lent her to that person… [but] without blaming others, it is still his own responsibility/fault. At the end, the host even said so. He is both ignorant of the law as well as the disadvantaged/weak party.

爱上鸡尾酒:

You guys can’t blame Fangfang’s parents. Who with the means [to take care of their child] would “rent” their child to others? Parents without money all want their child to be able to have enough to eat. 难过难过难过

67谈话:

Accent sounds like he’s from Henan. 愤怒愤怒愤怒

以吟为乐:

What you’re saying is truly spreading seriously unhealthy information, or bluntly corrupting social values. Do you believe renting children should get any level of support? Allowing children who are unable to independently think for themselves to be given to strangers as labor? If you don’t have the ability to raise a child, why have a child to have it suffer? Do we even know if he feels guilty? I know that throughout the entire country there are [government provided] social subsidies, so it couldn’t be to the point where there is no food to eat, or at least not to the point of starving to death, only some difference in living conditions. These days there are a lot of people breaking the law and claiming to be ignorant of the law to evade responsibility, but regardless of whether or not one is ignorant of the law, just on concepts of morality alone, what kind of behavior [good or bad, right or wrong] do you believe this renting out of children belongs to? Does this have anything to do with ignorance of the law? If murder weren’t illegal, does that mean you can just go around killing people? Your thinking I feel is extremely ridiculous.

黄大闲:

Her parents should definitely be blamed. First, if you aren’t sure you have the ability to raise a child, why are you having children? Second, a parent never harms their own children, and this is him not hurting the child himself but allowing another person to hurt the child. And now he’s pretending [to be innocent, righteous], bullshit. Second, a child that small is best kept with the parents. Since you’ve rented her out, you should have already considered what unexpected situations there could be. But didn’t you accept them at the time? And you didn’t sign any paperwork. Third, the parent didn’t even know exactly where the child was, I don’t know how this father acted like one. Even if he was so poor that he had no choice, shouldn’t he have at least gone to check on his child? And if while checking on his child he discovered this kind of situation, he should have immediately reported it to law enforcement.

g1101:

Those who say the parents aren’t human are all people who have never experienced poverty.

xuan6357:

To put it simply, if the little girl’s parents had money, would they rent their child for 5000 kuai? Moreover, that was a so-called acrobatics troupe, would the average person think that an acrobatics troupe would do this kind of thing? Make sure you understand clearly before saying anything!

正经阎:

Sigh! Who can understand the helplessness of poor people! If one had money, one wouldn’t do this either. 难过难过难过难过可怜的芳芳”>Poor Fangfang.

No matter how poor you still can’t do this!

Father managed to track down Zhai Xuefeng and got money rather than blood from him. That is not the behavior of a beast, but of a pathetic domesticated creature.

This reminds me of the movie The King of Masks, where the old man buys a kid at the market to teach it his mask changing abilities. I don’t think the man ever made the kid eat poop, though.

And isn’t this kind of a thing that’s been done for a long time? Shaolin is basically an acrobatic school where parents send their kids for a few years to learn tricks and go on tour to make money. Jackie Chan was sent to the Peking Opera school where he learned acrobatic stunts and went on tour with them. This father might not be evil, he might just be naive.

Now THIS, is a father actually trying to sell his son:

  • cdn icehole

I think it’s time for countries around the World to consider forcing parents to apply for a licence to procreate. If caught with kids and no licence then kids are taken away. I know parents in my neighbourhood that should not have the privilege of procreation.

    • 3B-Real

So who is going to pay for the care of these kids? They are not going to get any money out of these poor folks. So then the burden is on the Gov to find a place and use up all types of resources because they don’t have proper means to support birth control or planned parenthood for the poor. If anything to support the foundation of family they should concentrate on maybe helping the kid grow with his natural family and policing it that way unless the family is mentally, morally up to snuff.

Beside the 1 child policy has already been put into effect for a long time. But you never know there are rumors that this might happen in the distant future for the fate of man kind.

      • cdn icehole

It’s obvious who’s going to pay for the care of these kids. Society will be picking up the tab no matter what method is chosen to address the issue.

As for the One Child Policy, I thought farmers were allowed to have more than one kid. It would be a cold day in Hell before Westerners implement such a policy. The reality is they don’t have to as they are facing a shrinking population.

        • Patrick

Western countries certainly don’t have a “shrinking population”, they just aren’t keeping up with the explosion happening in Africa and other less developed places.
We’re only suffocating ourselves to a lesser degree.

        • 3B-Real

A shrinking population because of social and persponal responsibility. For some reason people don’t into consideration that they can’t afford a child they about to bring into this world. Sux the farmers are too poor to even get abortions so they are stuck because condoms suck and any form of birth control out side suck it out using a condom is out of reach not know to these people.

Its not a shrinking population in the wester world but a stagnation or a slow down. Hell Singapore is paying people to have meore kids. In these days no one wants the pressure of having an extra mouth to feed. Japan is paying immigrants to get out because the competition is hell for the nationals. They are no longer trying to thrive in their own nation thus losing healthy labor force and taxes from the immigrants sending their money back home.

What sucks in today’s world that there is no more land to inhabit and create a new nation out of. We are stuck with 2-3 choices of staying where we are at, invading others, or civil wars within our own borders until we kill off an opposition and remake a nation. We’re doomed!!!

  • Gary

How is the 22K in compensation money already spent? The child’s medical and psychological care? The father obviously didn’t spend it on his own much needed dental care. If you’re “extremely poor” in rural China this much money should set you up like a prince and not be gone so fast.

    • 3B-Real

Some one probably got sick like his wife maybe or mother, or himself. And no matter where you go in China medical expenses are are fucking high if seriously ill. This is where communism failed to “commy” out. They are trying to fix it progressively.

      • vince

No point in speculating, there has been no mention of a sick mother/wife/whatever and he didnt bother to mention it so can’t really give him the benefit of the doubt, he seems fit enough to work, why ‘rent’ out a child to people who are strangers. I doubt this assclown even bothered to check if the ‘acrobatics school’ was even real, he doesn’t deserve to have a kid. No justification for this appalling incident.

        • Sunshine

Indeed. This screams when shit hits the fan I play the victim card, from head to toe.

  • 平凡人

This is only one of the many stories, it is sad that people’s values have reached this stage whereby money seems to be above everything. Renting a child is definitely not acceptable, bringing the child up in a very hard environment can tough; however, in the early days, how many children were brought up in tough times? Many. No matter how tough life is, I do not believe that a father needs to rent a child, if he works hard enough, he can pull through.

    • Josephus Flavius

China’s problem lies within the an-alphabetic peasants. They should have changed the one child policy to a “no child policy” there. 5000 Yuan, it goes a long way in the “nong cun”

      • shanghainese

problem is too many children for rural people and only 1 allowed for cityfolks. rural can have more because of the labour needed there. can’t think of bad things for more children for cityfolks. maybe it changed now. this is y the chinese govt imo has low logic.

  • Kim

I think what confuses me the most is don’t you have to pay to send your children to the acrobatics schools? I mean even if the girl was seen to have potential and got a scholarship I don’t really see how the parents would get 10,000 kuai. Wouldn’t that be a little bit suspicious?

Also now, do you give the children beggars money so they don’t get beat? Or do you not give any money, let them get beat with the aims of ultimately discouraging this from happening?

    • bobiscool

Exactly what I was thinking. Perhaps I am too stupid and naive, but when you send kids to a circus, even if you don’t have to pay, you wouldn’t be paid for it until they become a regular or something.

And I wouldn’t call it “renting” out your children either. I wouldn’t expect a circus to treat my children like that. In fact I think it’d be good training for the child, so that when they get older they can have a special skill to show off and stuff.

and wow, a child beggar can earn over 22k in four years? That’s pretty impressive… (I assume it’s over that, otherwise the person wouldn’t even think of buying child beggars)

      • guizi

Long ago I watched a TV documentary about Chinese acrobat troupe in Henan. Very small kids also performed on stage. So, I guess small kids also can get money, although the amount of the money the father got is rather big and on a suspicious level.

They said that in henan there is a famous town for acrobatic arts. There are lots of small troupes there, the TV crew focused on small one. The house of the troupe was very shabby like an abandoned farmers barn, and some kids were without regular registrations. They were training in local gymnasium, and some older kids who looked around 10 years old performed on stage several time a day!! When all finished, they looked very exhausted. In fact on last stage one boy made a mistake. Very harsh and dangerous for such a little kid.

        • guizi

This is what should be done, http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/90001/90776/90882/7285105.html seems like a novel idea. Checking the DNA of beggars with their ‘children’ would be a great way to clamp down on this menace. The more exposed this trade is, the faster it will die, what irritated me the most while reading the article I have linked to is the ‘infringement on privacy’, I feel without a doubt those rights can be disregarded especially when the outcome may be saving the children from a life of abuse and cruelty.

    • CHNinUSA

I totally agree with you. These “rent-child-to-beg” things are really common in some poor villages of China, not just Henan, These parents know it initially. He just didn’t expect the child would got such ruthless punishment, because this one is one of the most brutal case so it’s got caught people attention.
The fundamental reason behind is the nonfeasance of the government, who really doesn’t give a shit to anything other than protests and demonstration.

Sadly, there is a long Chinese tradition of treating females as chattels. I have heard old stories of wives being sold to settle gambling debts and young daughters being given away because there were too many mouths to feed. I would have thought the current government would have made laws to prevent recurrence of these feudal practices. But it seems there are no laws that can stop someone from being a lousy parent. Best thing would be for someone to drag this guy away to have a compulsory vasectomy to stop him from fathering more children.

Poor girl… but it’s amazing that she has the spirit to continue smiling and laughing despite the difficulties she gone through.

It’s true that the father… is terrible for selling his child away. But if we think about it, first of all, I think he truly believes he’s giving his daughter a better life… secondly, I think he truly was cheated by the person that took his daughter, after all, he probably is uneducated… poor thing.
