Chinese Crowd Lifts SUV to Rescue Run Over Child in Wenzhou

Video of a Chinese crowd lifting up an SUV to rescue a child that had been run over in Wenzhou, China. Highlighted in the red circle is the child and parent. The child refuses to walk, throwing a temper tantrum.

From Sina Weibo (1 & 2) & Youku:

Crowd works together to lift car to save child

December 9th morning 7:25am, at the corner of Lane 40 Hangbiao Road in the city of Wenzhou, a child was run over and trapped under a car. With the SUV caught in the dilemma of not being able to go forward or back, someone shouted “lift the car!” Immediately over 10 people who had gathered around “one, two, three” used their collective strength [and lifted up the car]. The frightened child was carried out and unhurt. These people who helped did not know each other but their action both moved and warmed those at the scene and this city. Wenzhou people used action to once again demonstrate the “place of warmth” is a title fully deserved.

The above video has been viewed over 460k times on popular Chinese video sharing website Youku since it was uploaded yesterday.

The gathering crowd together lift up the SUV to free the child trapped underneath.

The female driver immediately got out of the car and looked extremely worried. If every driver were like this, Chinese society wouldn’t have so many entangling/complicated problems.

网易江苏省徐州市网友 [尼姑庵方丈]:

Very good, this kind of mentality/spirit of mutual care and concern is what society needs. Good thing this car’s underpan is high and speed wasn’t fast. It’s almost the [Chinese] New Year, everyone stay safe.

网易广西网友 [binkpr]:

Watching the video, the driver reacted very quickly, and the problem was solved very urgently too. It looks like she said something, probably to have everyone help lift the car. Of course there were also a lot of kind-hearted people on the scene and everyone worked together to rescue that little child. It seems in the end nothing bad happened, otherwise the female driver wouldn’t have slowly driven away. No matter what, the little child was ultimately safe, and that’s what’s most important!

网易福建省厦门市网友:

Little Yue Yue‘s soul is in heaven will also be relieved [to see this result]. She used her life to awaken the conscience of the Chinese people!

网易辽宁省鞍山市网友:

An old lady? Destroyed the conscience of the country’s people. A 2-year-old child? Awakened the conscience of the country’s people.

[Note: The "old lady" is the elderly woman who successfully sued a man named Peng Yu in 2006 after he helped her up from a fall. Her and the Nanjing judge who concluded that it was "common sense" that whoever helps is whoever was responsible for the mishap are often cited by Chinese people as a popular example of why one should avoid getting involved and helping others in apparent need.]

网易广东省网友 [沉默的大多數]:

One of the Heavenly Kingdom‘s standard characteristics: Child’s mother is an idiot, female driver is dumb cunt, idiotic mother has no heart, dumb cunt female driver has no eyes.

网易上海市浦东新区网友:

Looks like the child was throwing a temper tantrum and was refusing to walk. Sure has been taught a big lesson now!

寡妇村牛村长他爷爷 [网易江西省赣州市网友]:

The adult deserves to die, how could she not care about her child and keep walking on? You think you’re in your home?

河蟹乱爬 [网易辽宁省网友]:

This female driver is a little unlucky… In this incident, the child and parent’s are mostly responsible… Letting a child do whatever it wants is definitely wrong…

hammerg0 [网易广东省佛山市网友]:

I found it perplexing why the small car behind [the SUV] didn’t do anything. Looking closely, it turns out it has a white license plate. That makes sense.

[Note: White license plates are given to drivers in the military, or often the relatives of those in the military.]

网易黑龙江省大兴安岭地区网友 [hdh2781]:

Seeing this, it has to be said that Zhejiang people are good people. If this were in Guangdong, nobody would’ve done anything.

What do you think?

You do realise it was a woman driver and not a man. If it was a man he’ll probably would have continued to drive. Chinese women are the back bone of this country, the men are just thugs.

    Questions:
    * Have you ever seen so many Chinese people run?
    * For such a spectacular event, no one is interested in standing around gawking. Why?
    * Jumping out of the SUV that quickly is an admission of guilt; why would anyone jump out of there so quickly? (new carjacking technique for the brazen)
    * What is this camera feed from? How was it decided to be released to the public?
    * If there wasn’t video/photographic proof, could you possibly take Chinese news at face value? (equivalent of: TGFO)

This video is just about as fake as a Chinese MMA knock-out victory. (Shangguan Pengfei is apparently in a coma because of this:)
    http://video.sina.com.cn/p/sports/o/v/2011-12-02/164261588913.html
But. Again. This is terroir the doubter always doubting away. So. Just ask the more relevant question:

*Is the need to believe in altruism in China so necessary that it’s better not to question the validity of types of events?

    • Pong Lenis

Doesn’t look fake to me. They really drive like that.

      • http://candosino.wordpress.com terroir

Yeah, we as we saw early, Gan Lulu’s breasts didn’t look fake at all. They really do sag like that.

However, the important thing of note in both cases is to see how hard they are both trying. Usually, if (that should be capitalized, but hey, use your imagination) someone comes to help, then one person comes to help; in this case, everyone comes to help, and everybody runs. There is not a person who is doing the normal “stand around and not be actively part of the situation”.

Again: what’s important isn’t whether it’s real or not, but whether we need this to be real. Go proper-gandalf!

        • Pong Lenis

I have to admit that I can’t really see the connection between that SUV, Gan Lulu’s boobs, and Gandalf.

          • lonetrey

clearly, Terroir is describing a hypothetical situation where Gandalf was driving a car with Gan Lulu and swerved to avoid hitting a child. Gan Lulu was only saved by her boobs.

          • http://candosino.wordpress.com terroir

            Propaganda => Proper-Gandalf

            You guys obviously aren’t Chinese.

        • mr. weiner

          @Terroir and LP.
          * Chinese people run on mass when there are free turnips up for grabs.
          * The quick witted mother obviously yelled “Free turnips, they’re under the SUV”.
*The driver jumped out to get some free turnips too as well as ganking a few sweet potatoes that weren’t on offer.
Chinese people do drive like this ,but in fairness to the lady driving ,a toddler on sit down strike is hard to spot over the bonnet of a Sports utility vehicle and she wasn’t speeding.

The link between miss Lu Lu delightfully pedundulas fun bags and the heroic crowd is harder to prove…Possibly having found no turnips some one exitable in the crowd might have thought she was under the car? as to Gandalf it is perhaps it was a typo for Gadaarfi? only time will tell.

        • IS IT REAL?

You got a point, it actually struck me as fake. I mean, it all seemed too orchestrated… the child sitting down just moments before the SUV pulled on top of her (slowly). The way they all ran out to help so quickly rather than anyone just gawking or staring.

It’s as if they all already knew what had happened… but the main thing is the camera… why is it so clear? Why is it pointed down what looks like a dingy back alley road (and the camera seems of good quality)?

Would YOU put this kind of camera up to monitor this kind of road or street?

How is it these people know exactly what to do, when all other videos I have seen (and it is a good number) always reverse or drive over the person they just hit?

This video seems to be released more of a testament to that China can change and against the two year old girl. It seems like a cleverly planned event to try and win back the face that the other video has caused.

I can’t be certain, nobody can except those involved… and like you guys… I want to believe in it. I REALLY do. But, it just seems too orchestrated, too many coincidences… just by a hair.

          • Nib

Possibly, the frantic earnestness of the driver and parents was infectious and, combined with the obvious fact that it is the driver’s fault, the lifters felt enabled to help and safe from repercussion.
Also, the scavenger’s positive treatment has been well-publicized, or so it seems according to chinasmack.

          • http://candosino.wordpress.com terroir

Sirrah, your username would have come in handy on the Gan Lulu story.

I think you’ve made a better distinction than I was able to do, and that is to state “I want to believe in it. I REALLY do.” As the fact is, many people want to love China. They see an ideal, but are faced with the reality/practicalities.

So. What does truth mean to people who have this feeling, as compared with seeing this? What does a “lie” matter so long as it’s a “beautiful lie”? True or not, how does the implausible and fantastic have an effect upon the average Chinese existence who don’t save people but spit and butt in line except as a reinforcement of the ideals of nationist pride instilled in all chinese?

            As I said: proper-Gandalf.

          • Will I Am

You are right – it is TOTALLY fake. There are a couple of ladies who walk behind the parents and there is some cut or passing of the child. What is left in the street is not a child. Also, as the rescue begins, many men run out from the lower left of the screen.

          • Justin

Well for one. If you doubt whether there is a camera in the alleyway, you can always go to the address that is listed on the bottom of the video, which seems to be the camera’s location and see if they have one posted there. If you’re feeling up to a trip to Wenzhou.

航标路 (Street name) 40(some character I don’t recognize)2号(address number) 3楼 (building number) 阳台 (balcony, which I guess is the position of the camera)

So if you go to the third building of No. 2 Hangbiao St. then you should see a security camera on a balcony somewhere around where this happened. Go look. I’ll wait.

        • Boris

          Madame Guillotine,
I saw a similar thing happen a year ago. Kid just ran out in front of a car and ended up under it. Hoards of people ran to help. Some were screaming at the driver, who really couldn’t have avoided the accident. What we’re seeing here isn’t a response to the previous tragedy -when people KNOW a child is hurt they try to help. Perhaps YOU need to look at what YOUR vested interest is in this being fake.

          • http://candosino.wordpress.com terroir

            @Bore-ass

I don’t need this to be fake; also, if people think this is real, fine, I hear cake goes well with platitudes and sterling ideals. Knock yourself out and have a big ripping smile on your face to go along with your egregious use of caps lock in absense of a actual argument.

But. Hey. This is just a difference of opinion, right? So. What was the other thing I said that you conveniently did not reference (but did go ahead with your egregious use of caps lock – oh, you KNOW what YOU did, it’s YOUR comment). And that was the fact that China desperately needs this to be true.

China has a lot of bad news going on, and so good news is so important. In fact, good news is so important that I would argue the validity of the actual act is not as important as the effect it has upon the whole masses.

That’s right. A lie – but not just any lie: a “beautiful lie”. That’s why we’ll always hear about these impossible stories in China: (off the top of my head)
            * police woman in high heels saves suicide jumper
            * passerby saves suicide jumper with a kiss – from jumping off a pedestrian overpass
            * “world’s most beautiful mother” saves falling baby from apartment fall

To me, these aren’t miracles. No. Maybe they’re even true, but these aren’t part of my world. To me, a miracle would be people waiting in line, not spitting nor trying to rip you off at every turn. To me, this would be a better society.

I’m sure cases of altruism happens in China. Maybe. So why don’t you take another look at this video and discern what the vested interest it has to the entire country of China, weigh it against the possibilities and see that it’s importance is so great that it doesn’t even have to be real.

          • Boris

‘Bore-ass’ -from the man whose posts are so lengthy he makes Tolstoy look like an amateur limerick writer. ‘Sore-ass’ would be more appropriate since I’m one of the dummies who sits here and reads them.
            I deduce:
            A) You’re extremely funny,
            B) Your ego doesn’t serve you well.
            The world according to Terroir…
‘Young girl knocked down, ignored by passers by, dies’ -the result of a people conditioned by laws of their tyrannical government to avoid interfering in the concerns of strangers.
‘Policeman criticised for having shoes polished from his car’ -citizens criticising an outward symbol of said tyrannical government.
‘Citizens help child trapped under vehicle’ -aforementioned government attempts to regain ‘face’ lost in previous incident by fabricating a similar incident portraying citizens in a more positive light.
You have a very rigid position. The pay-off for such inflexibility is your ego never has to face the question, ‘Is it possible that I’m generating my own anger?’ The ego -along with the belief system -remain in tact.
At least when you arrive at the gates of hell you’ll be able to turn to the ferryman and announce, ‘I knew it. I was right all along.’
Another plus: if queue jumping and phlegm are your biggest problems, then you should rejoice at your exceedingly good fortune.

As my highschool teachers taught me, when you’re writing an essay, bring every point back to the thesis. If you want to say “fuck the man”, then blaming filthy beggers for their own vileness is just bad rhetoric.

            @Boorish
If you can’t possibly read more than three paragraphs with the occasional dick joke thrown in, then may Chtluthu have mercy on your soul when reading my book of limericks that’s I’ll be publishing soon. In it I have such whing-dingers as:

“There was once a bloke named Boris,
whose skin for arguing was quite porous
with no thoughts of his own
            he would pointlessly moan
a retort both off-topic and uproarous”

I’m not one to keep repeating myself, so I’ll lead you and other masochists who love my regular columns to re-read my origninal words. In it, if you can see specific questions and issues I raise to which you do not respond. In fact, your response to me is to ignore the issue at hand and just moan about me.

You definitely aren’t arguing with me, so what is this? Foreplay? Also: are you from Nantucket?

          • Boris

O, Noble Bard (for some, that title’s an honour; for you, it’s an abbreviation),
To answer your pointless question: China doesn’t NEED positive stories, but the government does capitalise on them. As with any society there are always positive stories in circulation. In general, the government have found propaganda to be an effective way to mobilise an enormous, under-resourced population with a relatively low level of education. It’s a matter of economics. We all know what’s happening -you’re not a genius for bringing it to our attention. So stick to imitating Noel Coward and stop trying to be George Kennan.
‘…the fact is, many people want to love China. They see an ideal, but are faced with the reality/practicalities.’ ‘Love China’? What’s a country? The people? The geographic area? The government? Define it. Any country is a nebulous concept, not (unlike your political opinions) a monolithic entity. People everywhere simultaneously like and loath different aspects of a culture that surrounds them. So perhaps we could loosely define someone who loves China as someone who finds more positives in their lives here than negatives. I know heaps of Chinese people and foreigners who are content to be here…

          • Boris

…I’m assuming from your Chinese that you’ve been here some time, but I’ve never read you post anything positive about Chinese society. Check this thread -your life here seems to be defined by: spitting, queue-jumping, getting ripped-off. Is it that China’s glass is half-empty, or could it be your own? If China suddenly morphed into the country you wanted, then would you be happy? You’d need to move somewhere else to justify your internal state or face the reality that your angst is self-generated.
A lot of foreigners are going to wake up tomorrow anticipating the exciting stimuli of living in an Asian country. You’re going to walk out into a society you view as dirty and corrupt, full of people you look down your nose at, incapable of perceiving any subtlety or plurality in social dynamics. Whatever witty riposte you choose to post won’t alter this fact.

          • Chef Rocco

Spot on, Boris. terroir must have been in China for a long time, but he succeeds in marginalizing himself from the society with his strong sense of cynicism and moral/cultural superiority.

Currently Chinese society is like a car on full throttle, the easy way for people living in the country is sitting in the car and experiencing the speedy excitements. however, terroir is racing with the car on his foot, when he is ahead of the car, he is getting tired, when he is behind the car, he is getting exhausted. He ends up to be a whiner.

Wow, so your ability to ascertain the authenticity of what is transpiring in low-quality videos shot at odd angles isn’t as infallible as you once suspected? Shocking.

You know the paranoid delusions of expats really amuse me some times. I work for the state media. I know a thing or two about manufactured news and when that is done, you know. Out one side of your mouths you say the CPC is inept and bureaucratic, but at the same time they are somehow capable of godlike feats, like monitoring your every move and controlling and manufacturing every single event that occurs. You guys are like the 9/11 conspiracy nutters: the Bush Administration is perhaps one of the most incompetent in history, yet it somehow executed the most intricate conspiracy in human history? C’mon!

It may come as a shock to you, but China’s propaganda machine isn’t so sophisticated as you might think. I can barely get the fucking editors to abbreviate dates properly in AP Style.

It’s easy to manufacture a news story. Staging something on video is a different matter. Another poster said that it was “suspicious” that such a “nice” camera was positioned right in this dank alley, but there are such cameras in alleys everywhere in China and they are all about the same quality. If you had half a fucking brain and knew the first thing about China, that wouldn’t seem suspicious at all. A similar one captured that man’s stabbing rampage. You guys weren’t questioning the authenticity of that at the time now were you? Oh no, a Chinese guy going on a killing spree seems about right to you, but Chinese people gathering together to help a child, it must be fake.

However, these are the reasons why I believe this to be fake.

1- The Chinese media are awash with these kind of stories at the moment. Just yesterday there was a piece on the radio about this guy who lost a leg in an accident but was saved from death by passers by. He just kept saying how grateful he was to the ordinary people. Just to keep ramming the point home.

I am sure that Chinese media will be under orders from on high to keep highlighting these kind of stories. And while of them certainly will be real, some (like the one reported here about a group of people helping a pregnant woman in a Shanghai park) will be fake. As if to prove a point. Instead of bringing in some laws or looking harder at why the Yueyue situation occured, let’s show that everything is okay, morally, and that will convince the public to act better.

2- How was she trapped that lifting a car was needed? The report says that she was unhurt. How was she trapped? Seems a bit fishy.

Anyway, all in all, I do expect to see many more of these types of stoires in the next few months.

    • Bingya

I think it is true if only because this video is from Wenzhou.

  • http://Justsomeguy Brian Kennedy

Last month, as I was walking to work (I’m an expat), in a large city here in China, I noticed that a bike was down at a busy intersection just a few yards from me, with a car stopped next to it. I could clearly see a body underneath the car, but could not tell if it was a man or a woman. I bolted into the intersection and within minutes several men and one woman helped lift a 4 door mid size car off the person -walked it a few feet and set it down. There was a young woman there underneath–somebody dragged her out as we lifted the car. Someone sat her up–she was definitely in shock–not sure of the outcome, since we all left as quickly as we arrived. The owner of the car stayed behind, and was on his cellphone. No I don’t think the above video was a fake.I do see how a frustrated parent leaves a child who is having a temper tantrum in their place–but indeed, not in the middle of the street! I do have a sense that people here truly have a heart to help, but need to see that in a life/death situation–you have to take a risk. Someone said that because I am an expat that other people joined in–but truly there were at least three others there trying to lift the car before I joined in–it happened very quickly. I was grateful to have the opportunity to help and have a renewed faith in my neighbors here in the PRC. There are good people out there.

    • 平凡人

Agree, there are good people in China. As the population is huge, we tend to see and remember more bad deeds. However, I am not optimistic about the newer generation. They are driven by money, have little or no moral values, needless to talk about religion.

    • http://candosino.wordpress.com terroir

I don’t see how “just some guy” who happened to help lift a car off of someone is more qualified to authenticate a video; nor is the case that your act or this purported one used as indisputable proof that there are good people in China.

Besides the fact that you are a plant who needs to clarify that he is an expat by stating it twice and using his expat-y name, you and this current story seem to suggest that lifting cars off people is a common occurance when the opposite – people content to watch while people are underneath cars – is quite the norm.

Let the good people of China come forth, car-lifting aside, and let their acts be known on their own accord, and not be promoted with the “beautiful lies” by “just some guy”.

      • hooots

Wow, terroir. You really don’t want this to be true. It seems to bring you pain and discomfort that someone here in China actually helped somebody out. Why are you trying so hard to hide from the idea that everyone here isn’t a heartless bastard. I mean this might be the longest most consistent attempt at sarcasm ever, but it seems that it pains you to believe that there are actually good, selfless people in China.

It sounds like, if you got hit by a car here, it would almost bring you joy if nobody helped you. It would only confirm your suspicions.

Last month, as an expat was wheeling to work, in a large city here in USA, I noticed that a pedestrian was down at a busy intersection just a few yards from me, with a bike stopped next to it. I could clearly see a body underneath the car, but could not tell if it was a redneck or a racist . . . I won’t waste more time responding from here.

  • FREDDY ENG

    Ha! “Tough love” gone awry…..

  • FREDDY ENG

Well, everyone in the video is “warm-hearted” except the cunt walking towards the camera on the left who clearly sees the child on the road AND the SUV heading towards him. Karma is a bitch just like her….

  • typingfromwork

It’s good to hear these kinds of stories coming out. No doubt the people of China are in shock over Yueyue and want to prove to themselves and others that they are essentially good people. You can become a bit too cynical at times.

  • simple harmonic motion

After watching the video, I don’t think its fake.

I think its too risky for staging. If the child was indeed under the car, the driver could have easily ran over the child. I don’t think people would stage something where there is a high -risk of getting the kid hurt. Could they coach the kid into lying on the road while avoiding the car? maybe? Kinda doubt that though. The child looks toddler age don’t think that’s really plausible.

The camera is probably just there by coincidence. Looks like a busy area so maybe that’s why there is a security camera there ( assuming its a security camera).

    • LeBlanc

But, in the tape, we NEVER SEE the child pinned under the car! How can a small child be run over by a 2 ton SUV ad have NO injuries of any sort? It just seems too fantastical. The way EVERYONE reacted immediately is contrary to everything one learns about

      • LeBlanc

group behavior in such situations. Even in a very “friendly” and community oriented nation like Denmark, it would still take several minutes in such a situation for people to realize what is happening, consider whether or not their help is needed, and then react. You learn all this in introductory classes to Social Psychology.
(PS- I apologize for the two posts to get my message across. Give me a day to get oriented to the system here and I will stop making such careless errors).

        • gatesofbabylon

I’m with you LeBlanc, it just seemed like everyone knew immediately what had happened, as if they were already expecting it.

  • chloe

No offense to men in china, but has anyone noticed that the first responders to this event were all women? Well mainly, what I mean is that the driver was female.

The identified drivers of that other accident where 18-passerbys ignore the dying child on the road were all men, and finally it was a female (again) who pulled the child to the side of the road and caller for her parents.

    • Stimpy

That’s not true. At least one of the people who didn’t help Yueyue was a woman: a mother walking with her young child.

    • Chad

Men in China? Men in the world. Studies have shown that women tend to be more socially cooperative. Even female rats are more socially responsible than male rats.

  • Bt. Jimmy Chen

If you see correctly, the driver did not see the child, and therefore the arrogant mother had to warn the driver.
The mother or caregiver is a major idiot that is incapable of supervision. China’s streets are NOT safe, and children should be given the utmost supervision, especially the young ones. China has considerably been plagued by the Nanjing Judge, and therefore, only the young-middle age people tend to help.

  • Tristan

Works both way, the offender is guilt-stricken and offering help to ratify the situation, the victim would also need to understand and not penalise the offender. The ugly truth about China is the fact that a huge handful of people there will take every single opportunity to exploit for $$$. We have to look at both sides and conclude, don’t be shallow.

        • Justin

Well, actually, as an editor, I beg to differ. You are the one who is ignorant in this case. Grammar is the word describing the entire system of language, i.e. punctuation, capitalization, syntax and the like are all included, which is why the Chinese word for grammar can be broken down int the characters 语 (Language) 法(Law). If you don’t believe me ask Webster’s Dictionary:

Noun 1. The whole system and structure of a language or of languages in general, usually taken as consisting of syntax and morphology.

Sorry that my poor writing led you to believe that I am a plant to lie. I actually used my real name and it is the first time I have posted here. I am a teacher at a local international school and that event was actually witnessed by fellow teachers who were waiting for our bus on the street corner that morning. I like how you used the word expat-y with my name–since I am an Irish-American –I got a good laugh. I, too, am cynical, but ultimately am compelled to act because of my faith. I was completely surprised by quick help by the locals. Any chance I can help to make a difference is why I do what I do.

    • http://candosino.wordpress.com terroir

What do you teach at the local international school, Brian Kennedy? Poor English?

    • hess

      “Irish-American”
      You’re American, and that’s it.

I’ve been reading this for months, this is my first time commenting. I’ve been learning a god deal about Chinese culture from this site so thanks to the mods and everyone who translates for doing the rest of us a great service.
Having said that, this looks 100% fake to me. China needed a good story like this to help both their own self-image and their international image. Men came running out from behind the trucks off the left seemingly out of nowhere and EVERYONe reacted so quickly. Maybe the car w. White License Plate was the official there to supervise the stunt. If the tape is viewed by many Chinese and it makes them react differently in the future (compared to how they acted with the little girl who died a few weeks ago), then maybe it isn’t a bad thing for the nation. But there is no doubt that it was staged.

      http://www.chinasmack.com/2011/videos/wenzhou-high-speed-train-crash-aftermath-5-most-viewed-videos.html

I was travelling to Wenzhou that day (by plane though). According my relatives, when people in the neighbourhood realised there had been a train crash everybody tried to help including farmers who lived nearby, taxi drivers, rich people who drove on BMW and others. In fact they didn’t stop till a “rescue group” send by the government ordered them to leave the place.

I wanted to donate blood when I heard the news but was advised against it because already all the hospitals’ storages were overfull. This is the nation that believes that the blood is sacred because a gift from your parents and on top of that is against it because of the various scandals.

I advise you against forming your opinion of Chinese people by simply reading the stories and comments on Chinasmack (though it is better than nothing). I have lived almost all my live in Europe but every four years I travel to China. The people I’ve met there and the people in Europe are very similar.

      • http://www.chinasmack.com Fauna

Thank you for your comment and links to our old posts.

Is this video fake or staged? No. I do not think so. However, I think it is natural for people and journalists to focus and report on any incident that is related with a recent hot topic. 2-year-old Yue Yue being run over was a recent hot topic and it is fresh in people’s minds so is it strange right now that this kind of news will receive more attention from Chinese journalists and people?

No, it is the same reason why there are also a lot of school bus news right now.

Incidents of surrounding people helping those who are hurt or need help are common in China. It happen every day but we don’t remember them and we just take for granted (理所当然) this. We forget everything that goes smoothly. We remember very clearly everything that does not.

Did the government promote this story? The government has done such things before to influence public opinion but I do not think it is smart to make that assumption so quickly in this case. There is actually nothing very unusual about Chinese media and people noticing this kind of story. “Positive” stories are not as common as “negative” stories but they regularly appear too. See the above links.

Maybe I am wrong but I believe many people’s speculation here are inaccurate or just very strange.

      • Justin

I agree with you and Fauna. People need to understand the way that news works and try to not allow it to unduly affect the way they view the world. There is very limited space for news every day. Say if a person reads 20 news stories a day then what are the odds that the majority of those stories are going to be positive? Very slim, especially in the U.S.

But when you look at China, a nation with 1.3 billion people, that makes the potential for bad stories even greater. The more people you have interacting, the more potential there is for disaster. Disasters and human cruelty are far more newsworthy than honesty and kindness, unfortunately. Who wants to read a story about a charity bake sale for cancer? People want to hear about the girl who got ran over and left for dead.

The problem isn’t that those stories aren’t newsworthy, it’s just that we can’t let them entirely shape the world in which we live. If we do then were are just as much tools of propaganda as any wu mao dang could ever be.

I’ll just take a moment to post a couple of links that I happened to read about news in the U.S.

        http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/12/08/9299274-girl-posts-may-die-2day-before-mother-kills-her

Next to that was: “Officials: Parents outsource the beating of their son.”

Then there was another post about a woman in Tulsa trying to make meth in a Wal-mart. Also that couple who starved a baby to death allegedly because they were vegans and they gave the kid soymilk instead of breast milk.

If I used MSNBC as my sole “window” into America, I would most likely think America was a pretty fucked up place too. It is, of course; everywhere is.

    • Blars

Ok, how was this staged? They filmed it in one go or do you think they had to re-do it a few times just to get it right? Obviously this street had to be cut of or maybe it’s one of those secret Chinese cities where they do stunts like this all the time. Also, the kid had to be a midget coz they couldn’t risk a childs life to do a stunt like this right? There are a few really paranoid commentors here. Maybe you could ask Terroir to explain how they did it without anyone at this location noticed it, or how they dared risk a childs life to do a stunt like this. The white license plate is a reflection from a light source, maybe the sun – just guessing here. Look at the last car coming into the picture, plate is blue but as it moves it gets “whiter”.

So, it can be called now the City of Good Samaritans and Corrupt Officials.

finally some uplifting news! good on you all!

  • Brendan

Did anyone notice how this bratty ass kid was doing the old “sack of potatoes” routine and making her mom and whomever just drag her dumb ass out of the middle of traffic? Then the occupy the street mini-protester sits right down on her ass like she doesn’t leave that super fun spot… wtf is up with this girl? Now the irony of an Asian woman driving an SUV is not lost on me but I gotta say… this 8 inch tall obstruction was not her fault. Shoulda had a boy!

    • Just John

Easy solution to that: Grab an ear.
Trust me, even the most stubborn child will follow.
My youngest daughter was very stubborn, and would resist as much as she could, but unfortunately for her, that only resulted in a very bright red ear, and her following anyways.

Tough love, ’tis the best. Blessings on you and the family Christmas 2011. Ho ho ho

Yeah because 3 year olds would NEVER do something like that. Clearly those pesky toddlers ought to be flailed and shot on sight. I’m guessing you don’t have kids Brendan?

  • Jerry

the Mother played a part also! SHe shouldn’t have left the girl in the middle of the street even she dont want to leave! Irressponsible China Mother too!

  • Xiongmao

It always amazes me to see these videos. The drivers clearly aren’t paying any attention and also: IF YOUR 3 YEAR OLD IS ACTING UP DON’T FUCKING LEAVE HER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, IF ONLY FOR 10 SECONDS MORONS. Also if the woman driving can’t see over the hood of her SUV she REALLY shouldn’t be driving a car like that. On a second not: Sure they people are doing fine but why are we going overboard with praise for something people will do everywhere else in a similar situation? We stumped so low now that every single act or normal human decency is nothing short of a miracle now in China?

    • Just John

      Your right.
We should leave her with that creepy guy next door named “Jerry” who has an unusual amount of candy, toys, and a van with no windows.

Me, I am just poking fun at you because I really dislike when people forget to turn off their capslock, so it’s even more annoying when they leave it on intentionally….

      • mr. weiner

Would be even worse if “Jerry” is Belgian.
Best quote from “In Bruges”: “Belgium is famous for 2 things, Chocolate and pedophillia and from what I understand they use one to get the other”. Classic.

I think Actually you are all missing the point. Anyone in there right mind does not leave a young girl sitting in a busy road! Also I am sick of peoples driving in China, How did the women driving the Honda SUV not see the child! Its completely ridiculous. If Chinese people actually bothered to take proper driving test instead of using bribes, they might be able to drive properly!

In any other country in the world this accident would never have occured in the first place.

  • Alejandro

    And now they praise who???
No driving exams (just a fee) stupid short-sighted people who don’t watch their steps. Awful traffic. WATCH THE VIDEO !
