Chinese Soldier Almost Kills Himself During Grenade Training

A Chinese soldier with an instructor during hand grenade training.

The following video of a Chinese soldier training to throw a hand grenade has been viewed over 850k times since it was uploaded two days ago on popular Chinese video sharing website Youku…

From Youku:

Near death experience when throwing grenade! Grenade tossing is definitely a skill!

A copy on YouTube:

As you can see from the video, the Chinese soldier accidentally throws the grenade against the wall causing it to bounce back. Both him and his training instructor immediately drop to the ground and the training instructor pulls him into the ditch before the grenade explodes.

The grenade explodes after bouncing back off the wall and into the ditch around the hand grenade throwing platform.

Smoke from the explosion.

Comments from Youku:

…This comrade is such a good thrower, throwing a grenade so closely, if it were during war, your squad mates are going to cry.

Judging by the circumstances of the site [design of the location], this kind of thing often happens.

I run into this kind of thing everyday playing CS [Counter-Strike].

王百万5:

This person is training how to throw in order to perish together with the enemy.

4个A:

That sergeant is so nimble.

juhao1001:

The instructor was very gei li! Very calm!

blueboyq:

Not afraid of a wolf-like enemy, just afraid of a pig-like squad mate.

贫血的绿巨人:

In war, one definitely can’t have this guy on his squad! Hehe

狼族使者1:

This instructor is so niubi, even not forgetting to pull him down~

小隆Darren:

When we were throwing grenades in the military, there was one person who blew up his leg. It was so bloody…

依旧丶月夜:

If something happens to the soldier, you don’t think he has responsibility? This is just his responsibility, okay? Although he’s better than so many people these days.

Elfenlied:

In 2007 when I entered the army as a new soldier, I was very calm the first time we trained how to throw grenades, completely treating it as if throwing a firecracker. Actually, this kind of thing in the video isn’t really that rare. Many new soldiers have done this kind of thing when they were small, simply big kids who have suffered before. Being really nervous when throwing live ammunition is also very normal. Instances where new soldiers throwing grenades only to have the safety lever be released before the grenade is thrown causing the training grenade to go off early also happen often. Last thing I want to say is that this kind of grenade that is thrown standing up has relatively less power and the amount of fragments/shrapnel are also very little.

gh1029:

In 2002, one of the new soldiers in our class did this very thing, dropping the grenade on the ground when reaching back to throw it, and was also pulled down by the instructor. Afterward, the instructor said to me, “this new guy in your class is muddle-headed”, and later when firing rockets, our instructor wouldn’t let him fire any. According to what the instructor said, “when throwing grenades, at most it’ll just blow up the two of us, but when firing rockets, if he hits the platform, then the an entire group of people are done for. However, I still told the instructor to let him fire the rockets, so the bastard had me be his partner. So I connected the grenade with the tail, help him put it in, and then aimed it for him and told him to just pull the trigger. I said to him: “When I tell you to fire, you just pull the trigger” and still something went wrong. Before I had given the order, the guy pulled the trigger and fired it. Everyone knows that when firing, one has to open their mouth, so there is equilibrium in the ear drum, but my mouth was still closed waiting for the signal at the time. My ears were still droning 2 days later.

Is this funny? ~~~ BS you people who are laughing~ Those of you who haven’t been in the military shouldn’t blindly make comments here~~~

哈哈小财神: (responding to above)

You must’ve been the one who was throwing [the grenade].

Have you been in the military before? What scary stories do you have?

The soldier and instructor climb out of the ditch uninjured after a poorly thrown live hand grenade bounces back at them.

I served as officer in the military (IDF). Once in half year we had to take all soldiers to train in the shooting range. And every time there were some funny/scary situations.

The worst experience was always with female soldiers. Most of them in their regular duties were secretaries, but they still had to go through once-in-half-year training with M-16.

I remember one girl who almost made an accident. She was in the lying shooting position and didn’t hold the gun firmly. So, the bullet went just few meters in front of her into a pool of water (it was raining that day). She got scared of the splashes, quickly got up and… turned back to everyone who stood behind the shooting line while still holding the gun and with the finger on the trigger.

    Now, that was really scary…

    • mr. weiner

      Chick+gun= something to worry about.

      • Just John

Actually, it depends on their upbringing.
Our family is military oriented. I have relatives in the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. I was Army for my term, but only 1 term.

Anyways, everyone in our family learns how to shoot. My mom could outshoot most guys I know. Of course, my cousins were horrible shots.

        • mr. weiner

Agreed John, usually the problem is cultural, not genetic.

          • coala banana

mr. winer, its both, cultural AND genetic…..

        • coala banana

that explains a lot about your violent and destructive and intolerant nature…

          • mr. weiner

Violent? Only on the rugby field mate, but I’ll help you up and buy you a beer afterwards.
Destructive? Only when I’m trying to fix something electronic.
            Intolerant? Only with dickheads bro.
Still I must’nt complain , at least you have learnt brevity is the soul of wit.
Nice to have you back CB.

            Are you on this again?

Accusing me of things that are blatantly false?

Didn’t Fauna’s warning, to all of us, point out last time to stop acting like petty children?

You don’t know me, you don’t know jack. About all you know is shit. Now go away, you do not deserve my attention, since you have nothing useful to say, and I will not be replying to you again.

  • robin yates

this was a training exercise, the grenade was low power training device, nothing unusual about this. They had places to hide in case of an error. So just enjoy the soldiers mistake

    • Just John

      Are you sure about that?
I know for US military basic training, we throw live M67 hand grenades (At least in mine we did, Fort Sill, OK). Fortunately, only 1, from a bunker. If you think stereo competitions have good bass, then you have never felt the kick of a grenade.

Still a bit scary. I have to admit, I was wondering wtf would happen if someone panicked and did something like this Chinese guy.

      • Jay K.

ft sill? shit you guys always lob artillery shells over there in lawton.

i didnt know ft sill was for basic training, always thought ft jackson and others but never ft sill except artillerly training.

I just watched Flowers of War and they had this one bad ass Chinese army guy, I just kept saying if China really had soldiers as bad ass as the guy in that movie they would have whooped that Jap Ass!!!…. This Fucktard is more in line with reality …..lol…

    • http://www.proxyforchina.com Rod

I just watched Mission Impossible 3. They go to Shanghai, and Tom Cruise is describing the guards around “the rabbit’s foot”. He says they’re “ex-people’s liberation army” as if it means they’re cool or something, like some sort of black ops special dudes. Then the guys are these young, buffed out guys. If it was close to reality, it would be some old man missing teeth smoking a cigarette, drunk on baijiu.

Why would this training video ever be released in the first place? What proof is there that this is even the PLA? Not going to call 胡说八道, but the blast doesn’t seem like it can kill a machine gun nest full of Imperialist Japanese soldiers.

The only proof of identification would be that little trot to the mound that seems so Chinese-y.

  • Tony

I bet they don’t have this problem in Taiwan since baseball is very popular there.

  • FREDDY ENG

Too bad he’s still alive, since he’s an obvious liability to his fellow comrades in real-life battle situations…..

Such thing do happened in the military and is uncommon. The trainer and recruits have to be very focus when performing dangerous action. That is why the ditch are for. Thank GOD for this case that they are alright.

Tsingtao Presents Real Men of Stupidity

Today we salute you Mr. Inaccurate Projectile Thrower

Where were you when all the 6th graders were outside throwing rocks and playing catch. Oh that’s right, you’re Chinese. You were inside doing homework. A toss here, a toss there and always off target.
    (momma why cant i throoow)
Joe Montana, Rodger Clemems, even those discus throwers whose names we cant even pronounce; all people you’ve aspired to be but hey, why not just stick to skee-ball tosses and save yourself from embarrassment but more importantly us, from physical injuries. But don’t let it get you down, we’re sure there’s a gal out there who’d let you ‘toss’ her salad.

So crack open an ice-cold Tsingtao Mr. off-target projectile king. Hold it with both hands if you need to. And when you’re finished, let us throw out the trash. We insist!

These are training grenades…all bang and no real shrapnel. Seems that this is truly a pathetic throwing arm or else they must be doing a drill with oil on their fingers!

  • diverdude

I thought the idea was to throw it at the Enemy ?

  • UkExPaT

It’s simple laws of physics. The object should be thrown at 45 degrees angle relative to the horizontal plane if it is to travel the farthest distance. However, the theory and doing it in practice are clearly different as this solider has demonstrated.

  • The Enlightened One

I was in the military training in Canada. One thing you don’t lack is stories when you are in the army. Some funny or scary events:

    1) On our first live ammo marksmanship exercise using M-16s or C-7s (Canadian term for it). One guy starts complaining that that his gun is jammed. The instructor walked over and asked what was going on… the guy using the gun points it at him and says it is jammed and won’t fire. The instructor freaks out and boots the weapon out of his hands lol.

    2) During a navigational exercise, our platoon is dropped off in a forest and told to use our navigational instincts to find the base camp which is about 2 hours N.E. (without a compass) during midnight. We will occasionally hear gunfire and see flares being set off. We would also be hunted by our instructors… fun stuff. However, one guy (who had the last name “Darling”, poor guy) showed up about an hour later than anyone else with shredded clothes. When asked what the hell had happened to him he said he has strayed massively off course and got into a fight with a baby bear.

Yeah, that’s right… Russians are not the only ones that wrestle with bears lol.

    • Jay K.

that is just hilarious, the 2nd story. reminds me of this fat ass that joined the army with my good friend and i got to meet over beer much later on. the fuckin guy seriously looked like john candy going into boot camp. he was not allowed to eat “desserts” and was put on a diet during boot camp.

he sometimes would ask the di’s “can i have some cake drill sgt” for some reason that cracks me up….and yes he was white, from the south and he talked like bubba form forrest gump

    • rollin wit 9′s

that’s crazy. he could have been killed haha (not that that’s funny)

  • Nilerafter24

  • typingfromwork

    Fucking TK noob.

  • R. Walsh

When I was in Army basic training in the US, this sort of thing was not uncommon whenever we got to the live grenade throw. Apparently all of the drill sergeants had practiced a series of maneuvers to deal with what happens when a trainee either drops the grenade, or doesn’t throw it far enough. Apparently it happened often enough that they stopped awarding the Soldier’s Medal to drill sergeants for throwing trainees out of the way.

  • dave

well that’s part of what happens. Many people die during training programs.

he’s lucky his instructor has fast hands. this guy should be in the office not on the battlefield.

  • 平凡人

His technique seems a little weird, also he seems to throw for the sake of throwing. They should have some form of target to prevent soldiers from throwing at the wrong places. They should practise with dmmy grenades and select those “okay” ones to do live grenades; unless they feel these guys are expendable.

  • manusan

    chinese army no need ennemy

  • blake

before anyone starts ragging on the Chinese military , my father saw something even worse when he was in basic training for the American army during the Vietnam war, one recruit just pulled a grenade pin and dropped the grenade , the trenches around the grenade range are used in the usa as well

  • Fman

Well at least now I see why the PLA needs to be several million strong… ;)

  • Young Man

Actually I think the instructor is quite clear-headed- he saves that SB’s life. Maybe he’s just had to do this quite often.

The People of Taiwan are sleeping well in their beds tonight.

  • Ru

I like the Chinese grenade pits more than the US ones. They make a lot more sense. The ones we threw grenades out of in Ft. Benning were concrete foxholes that you stood in. If you dropped a grenade in the hole, the instructor would have to toss it out before it detonated. If the instructor couldn’t grab the grenade in time.. Fuck if I know what you do then.

  • gungun

    close but no cigar!

  • dim mak

Well if he was smart, he wouldn’t have joined the army.

  • http://www.matthewsawtell.com Matthew A. Sawtell

Quick thinking drill instructor – and that video is probably going to be used as a training lecture before the recruits get to toss on the field.

  • Tie Ridge

Very good and fast thinking instructor. I am retired U.S.Army. In the 60 and 70 you were handed 3 grenades . The tower told you when to stand when to pull the pin and throw. We did lose a few in thoese days from failer to preform the task as stated. In the 1989 the practis was changed. You wer lined up in SS number 1 at a time was taken out to the throwing range. The instructor did not leave but very little room for mishaps. They even hold your hand wile pulling the pin then you throw the grenade. To easy not much training any more.

    • donscarletti

That was my thoughts too, every country has its share of idiot recruits, what matters is if those who have already been trained and entrusted are able to do their duty. This instructor reacted flawlessly in this situation.

  • xuedi

haha, the instructor must own a porsche to save his comrade :-P

  • Miz

Ah hahaha wow that was pretty clumsy of him
