Hong Kongers Protest Plan Allowing Mainlanders to Visit by Car

Hong Kongers protesting a proposed plan to allow mainland tourists to be able to drive their cars directly into Hong Kong.

On Sunday, February 12th, hundreds of Hong Kongers descended on Victoria Park carrying signs and shouting slogans in an organized protest against a government plan that would allow Mainland tourists to drive their cars into the city when visiting Hong Kong.

Organized on Facebook, ostensibly to further distinguish themselves against the censored, “backwards” Mainland, the protestors rallied support via an event page “Everyone Resist  Mainland Cars Coming to Hong Kong!” Aside from advertising the rally, users took the liberty of linking harrowing news stories of Mainland accidents and posting grisly pictures of car crashes. Over 7,000 people pledged to attend the rally, though on the day of the event only an estimated 500 arrived.

The proposal itself is a two-stage plan that would first allow Hong Kongers to drive to the Mainland beginning in March, but as of yet has no clear date on when Mainlanders would be allowed to drive into Hong Kong.  The Hong Kong government hopes the proposal will promote economic and social integration of Hong Kong into the Pearl River Delta region and further stimulate a booming tourism trade that rakes in billions of HKD every year from an ever increasing Mainland middle class.

Despite the potential economic benefits, Hong Kongers remain worried that allowing locusts Mainlanders to drive their cars into Hong Kong will exacerbate congestion and pollution problems, as well as increase the number of accidents due to a perceived lack of regulation on Mainland roads.

Bonus: In true style of any internet organized protest, spot the Guy Fawkes mask!

  1. Yeah, I would not want Chinese driving across my border either. Although this seems like a blatant generalization, people up north really need to learn how to drive before they try driving in Hong Kong.

  2. sofa ?

    • Thanks for your contribution. Have the fucking sofa.

      • If this was Facebook, I’d like this comment. Some people here are suffering from serious Sofaphilia – the jokes over, stop it now.

p.s. To be honest the way people drive in China, I wouldn’t let them drive anywhere – not even in China.

        • Ahahahaha, true. As an visitor, I was petrified when I went to visit my grand-uncle in Chengdu for the first time last summer. The cars on the road do not even conform to the right side! I could go on and on, but yeah it’s pretty crazy.

        • Seriously, my boss in Shen Zhen always left his left turn signal on when in the leftmost lane on the highway. I always assumed he just forgot about it, so one day I reminded him that it was on.

“No, I need to keep it on,” he replied, “so that the other cars know I’m not going to change lanes.”

I’m sure you can imagine my very Caucasian, very Canadian response to this. It looked a little bit like O.o

      • I knew you will come back

      • im guessing he decided to get on it before it got towed away by HK police.

  3. Strongly agree. Keep the locusts out, especially when they’re behind the wheel.

Mainlanders cannot, I repeat cannot drive well.

In fact they shouldn’t be allowed to drive in their own country.

It rains – they speed up. It’s foggy – they speed up. It’s smaller than them – shunt it off the road. The list goes on.

    Locusts stay out of HK.

  4. 7000 pledges to only 500, people must really care.

  5. Sadly, it’s true.
I witnessed a Chinese woman get her car stuck on a curb in Tsim Sha Tsui last month. It was literally hanging/suspended on the curb. Goddamn.

It was one of those 8-seater mini-vans.
So like, this time it was a curb, next time it may be a kid you know.

    • We all remember the Yue Yue video. I’m not sure how you could just happen to drive over a little kid without noticing… leave it to China drivers.

      • I think the biggest (and worst) thing about the Yue Yue video is that they DID notice the little girl….and did sweet FA about it…In fact, the second driver noticed her BEFORE hitting her..Imagine they could also then drive off into another legal jurisdiction and you can see why HKers dont want mainlander drivers around..

  6. anon is there too… xDDD

  7. Unfortunately, they are, for once, absolutely right.
I don’t know how well or bad HKers drive, but mainlanders literally buy their driving licenses!

Even the ones who actually pass them have no clue about what they’re doing. I’ve been explained by a student-driver that her teacher was explicitely recommending her to honk at cross-section instead of slowing down when she estimated it is inconvenient, and I can’t recall how many times I’ve seen school-cars behaving erratically… with the teacher behind the wheel!

I cannot but support them! If that pisses off mainlanders, let’s have them do their homework and protest to get enforced rules and real driving teaching at home!

    • The one skill tested at driving school is the ability to suck up to a Chinese driving teacher. Teachers at shitty private institutions in China tend to just be blow-hard idiots who want people to value what they say, even though they talk shit. The way you pass is by bringing them cigarettes and telling them how great they are, otherwise you can’t get your lesson and you can’t finish the course.

  8. This reminds me of the Texan family that used to live down the road from me. They used to ride horses on congested streets messing up traffic and our little suburbia became irate that they refused to use the bike trail.

In the end though. I see how more cars would be a problem in an already congested city, but at the same time. These are your neighbors.

We made a mistake with Cuba. Peace is always a better option in the long run. There are 190 nations waiting in line to take China or the US’ places in the world. We count every potential friend as a blessing.

  9. Only 500 people decided to come out and display their xenophobia for the world? Yeah this is a real populist movement. It’s fucking pathetic.

We, too, kick up a fuss when a small bunch of bigots decide to hold a “rally” against the immigrant du jour, mostly because of our middle class paranoia so finely attuned to this kind of crap. It usually fizzles out pretty quickly. I don’t even know why we bother most of the time.

    • Did you not read the article? It said 500 people confirmed on Facebook and 7,000 attended. That’s quite a surge, and it will continue to surge further because of the media attention.

  10. DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT Let Mainlanders drive into HK!!

I live in Guangdong, close to Guangzhou, and these fucking idiots haven’t got a bloody clue how to drive, it’s ridiculous, I thought India was bad for driving but China is far far worse. I look forward to my little visa runs into HK for a sense of normailty, please do not let these backward new money mainlanders fuck it up!!!

    • I can’t believe you think India is better. India is completely crazy. Maybe Guangzhou is worse than the rest of China ? Do you have a lot of two-wheelers there ? Two-wheelers are the main cause for Indian roads insanity.

    • Hell, if you think Guangzhou drivers are bad, you should deal with Chengdu and Kunming drivers. When I lived in Kunming years ago, I would see drivers hit their car horns repeatedly as if pedestrians were blocking their way when there was no one walking on the street for at least 80, 90, or more meters.

As for Chengdu drivers, let’s say just say i was in the back row of a police SVU — not as an arrested perp, but because I was traveling with someone who was a childhood friend of the Chengdu Airport police chief’s best friend (guanxi at work). Well, anyways, this cop goes straight thru a red light at one the busiest downtown intersections at the height of the evening rush hour without a single tap on the breaks. I nearly had a heart attack. And the cop directing traffic just about lost it too.

    • I lived in Shen Zhen, the place where most people would drive from to go to Hong Kong.

I completely agree with you. There is no prerequisite to a driver’s license in Shen Zhen, only a wad of RMB to buy the documentation.

  11. can we get some comments and banterings from the mainland and hkers?

  12. I would totally protest against this. This would seriously drag down public safety in the city.

  13. wouldn’t this be a potential safety hazard since Mainlanders drive on the right-side of the road, whereas HKers drive on the left-side?

    • The two don’t seem to be mutually exclusive when I think of how taxi drives in mainland China drive.

Am I the only person who wonders why taxis don’t even allow you the choice of wearing your seat belt while in the back seat? It isn’t bad enough that so many of these drivers are lunatics behind the wheel. They also have to have the belt hidden down under the seat so you cant even opt’ to use them if you, say, DID value you own life.

    • Hong Kongers drive on the left-side, yes.

Where as mainlanders drive on the right side, the left side, the middle and the side walk.

  14. How come we skipped the mainland Chinese comments on this post? I thought the whole point of this website was to allow us 外国人 to see what select Mainland folks are saying about things that concern them?

    • Because they were probably too hateful. I’ve noticed a distinct trend on China Smack to whitewash the Chinese comments on basically every topic, always leave the worst of it out and attempt to make Chinese look like reasonable human beings when the REAL comments show something much more sinister.

  15. Suck it up HK, you are in the iron grip of China and you can’t change it. And they won’t replace you with Shanghai.

Why doesn’t has Macau such problems with the Mainland?

    • You guys sound like a bunch of douche bags!!! CHinese people will do whatever they want to do, and if driving in Hong Kong (Chinese territory by the way) is what they want to do, then who can stop them????? It is their “right” to do it. Are you saying Cinese people should have no rights? You guys are bunch Hater Assed Haters!!!
If the Chinese can’t enjoy “THEIR” territory then why should you? Just take your asses back to whatever shitty country you come from, get over yourselves, and the little HK dogs have their panties in a bunch because with the mainlanders moving in they dont feel so elitlist anymore, well wake up and smell the coffee!! IT’S A NEW DAWN, IT’S A NEW DAY, IT’S A NEW LIGHT, FOR CHINA AND I’M FEELING GOOD!!!! haha…. you guys are ridiculous.

      • Sorry mate, a locust will remain a locust forever. Heard the term “the Ugly American” – it referred to Americans behaving badly whilst abroad.

The term now is “the Ugly Chinaman”. Everybody I’ve spoken to in my travels despises the locusts travelling through their country, or setting up shop.

The Chinese are a thoroughly hated nation. And once the bubble pops and the empire crumbles, as it does periodically, its back to bowls of rice and back-stabbing for evening entertainment.

        • And if that doesn’t happen? If China doesn’t crumble like “Great” Britain’s empire? You’re obviously quite butthurt about your own country’s insignificance. You little englandmen and your sad little island don’t matter anymore. And the people you’ve spoken to matter even less when a cash flush mainlander shows up and they bend over backwards to please him. Sure they can badmouth all they want but they’ll dance like little monkies for a scrap of meat from the table. Rather than worry about about China’s bubble popping, worry about your country being converted to Islam. Now THAT is funny.

Also, if things in Hong Kong get out of hand and they get too big for their britches (undoubtedly with the goading of expat foreigners), the PLA garrison may be unleashed to clean house. China’s patience is finite.

          • worry about your country being converted to Islam. Now THAT is funny.

Will never happen, not without civil war.

Scotland may become independent though, but can’t see we would ever return the falklands or gibraltar to those latin gypsies…dream on mate.

          • My country? I’m not British, ya clown.

      • Says DRay while spitting from the window of the unregistered ‘made in China’ Lamborghini his dad bought him as he changes lanes without signalling and illegally overtaking a mini-van grossly overcrowded with children coming home from a day-care center, forcing it off the road, while smoking a designer cigar that smells like lilacs, listening to Linkin Park and wearing a white jacket with black jeans and wallet chain, while street racing one handed down a busy downtown street in Hangzhou in the early evening, while shouting that his father is ‘Li Gang’, with three teenage girls whom he met at a KTV, one of whom he will later stab eight times, and then finally coming to rest his vehicle over the small helpless body of a two year old girl named Yue Yue who he will not help in any way and who as a result will die.

    • But Macau is too busy drowning in the laundered money of CCP officials and their well connected friends.

    • Because Macau has been completely taken over, there is a critical mass of mainlanders living there so there are not enough actual ‘Macauians’ left to complain, the ones that are left are fighting just to put food on the table and don’t have time for this. They hardly even use traditional characters anymore and the culture has been anhilated.

Maybe that’s why HKers don’t want to be swamped in the first place…

  16. I visited friends in Shanghai,a young couple who had just bought a small Chery car. I ask him if he took any driving lessons. He said: “Yes,one”.. The instructor taught him how to get tne car moving forward and backward and then said: “Ok,you can drive home now, best way to learn is by getting out on the road.” I think they had a few fender benders, but are still driving.

  17. who brought this idea up anyway?
It is almost impossible to drive in Hong Kong, this city is already too dense
plus allowing Mainlanders to drive in Hong Kong would just put peoples’ live at risk

    • Hong Kong = dense city
Mainland driver = danger to Hongers
Mainland driver + HK = population control..
      problem solved.
Just like 64 incident. If an area is too crowded, just send in some Mainland drivers.

  18. Hmmm is Hong Kong a part of China? Doesn’t China dictate politics in Hong Kong? If Bejing says jump, people in Hong Kong have to ask “how high?”

    • chinese need be allowed to drive in hong kong, south africa mexico san diego, whatever!!! let those foreign retards adapt

      • Sure. But the ones who drive like mount breathing ass clowns in South Africa (my country) or Mexico will get seven shades of shit beaten out of them if they drive Mainland-stylee over there.

Or a bullet in the temple.

    • No, Hong Kong is supposed to be a completely autonomous region and it is (government, politics, laws, economy, culture, etc.)

Even if this were not true, having the fucking mainlanders drive in Hong Kong would be just a terrible idea through and through.

Not only would it massively increase the congestion and air pollution, but it would be a serious danger to everyone in Hong Kong, drivers and pedestrians alike.

Can you imagine one of them at a round-about? Or driving down the wrong side (cause more congestion while a friendly Hong Kong police officer has to explain to the spitting, swearing “my friend/father/uncle is Mr. important guy” idiot that he actually has to follow the law)? Or running over a slew of pedestrians crossing the street at a crossing without any traffic lights (“I’m in the car, I’m bigger, so I have the right-of-away”)

      Fucking nightmare proposal….

  19. >implying people drive in HK

    Sounds good to me

    PS: Bring money.

    • I am foreigner in Chian almost 4 years. Chinese drives bad because the basics rules they learn are:
” cars are more important than pedestrians” , “when driving others drivers or cars are not important” , ..all this selfish way to drive its also in normal in china daily life, they just dont mind when taking the bus, metro or elevator, and i see very hard it will change, even they do a new test , they will fail on the road just because is they way they are. Anyway, i dont see many important car incidents here. But , wait a moment, i see here in Shenzhen already since more than 2 years hong kong cars driving on the streets with 2 plates.. I think here there is something missing, as i know hong kong people already can drive this side if they pay the shenzhen license plate fee.
I think not allow chinese people drive in HK is a big mistake, is racist and its showing how close of mind people can be, people must be able to drive in hk in china, at any place if they already have the prerequisites to drive. here HK people are judging before the start. where is the “innocent until proved guilty”.
This just sucks, so i call all countries in the world dont allow HK people to drive on their roads , first, because they drive by the left, and secondly because the xenophobic actions they have..but of course .. they are …perfect…

    • “Bring money”
      you are right
it is good business for funeral home

    • Fuck the money.
If they want to drive in Hong Kong they can follow the rules.
Thank fuck some people in HK have the stones to stand up and be counted. It’s an issue and it needs to be recognised.

  20. Mainlanders drive on the right – like most of the world.

Hong Kongers drive on the left – like the Brittish.

Most people in China drive their cars like they are riding a bicycle.

Allowing them to drive across the border = lots of accidents.

  21. It probably wouldn’t be a big deal if the HK police enforced the road regulations with absolute justice. Think of the fantastic money to be made if one would actually fine Chinese drivers when they drive outside of the law.

    • If the police enforced the regulations with absolute justice, then soon we’ll wind up with Internet posts whining about how “discriminatory” the Hong Kong Police are. I can see it now- “why do they pull over so many mainlanders?” As usual, everyone will be talking in circles to deny the true answer- “because we drive like total assholes.”
I can even envision Kong Qingdong coming out to say that any HK policeman who pulls over a Chinese is a running dog of the British imperialists.

      • And yet, you are here, talking in a small circle about how apparently every mainlander is unfit to drive in your traffic haven of HK, where it seems everyone is trained by Jenson Button. I don’t get how such an international city as HK would have so many intolerant and bigotted individuals- and that the society somehow tacitly approves of such things.

Are you really afraid of these potential internet posts? So what? Clueless dumb fucks from the mainland will be clueless and dumb. Pay no attention to them and enforce your laws correctly. What are you scared of them? Are you scared of some little words on the internet? Kong Qingdong is a dumbass who’s not being taken seriously even in his own university. If dipshit mainland drivers are complaining about being punished in HK for offenses they’ve caused, then you’re doing something right. Grow a pair. Jesus.

        • Grow a pair, Jesus? Don’t let the girly haircut fool you. Under fire our saviour was a stand-up soldier in the army of the Lord.

          • The meek shall inherit the earth. Apparently.

But you are right. In the land of the free “Gun toting Jesus” is certainly more fashionable than “Love thy neighbour Christ”. And the pussy “Turn the other cheek messiah” is nowhere to be found.

        • I’m not in HK, and didn’t suggest that anyone was afraid of such posts or that police should refrain from stopping mainland drivers. Just commenting on the fact that clueless and dumb people often go to great lengths to overlook the fact that they are clueless and dumb.

        • 100% agreed. HKers are fucking bigots..
What’s the deal anyways? I got an international license when i travelled England, paid like 40 bucks USD. Good to go. Just look at EU. This is a non issue, they are just using it as an excuse to bam Mainlanders. Silly Chink on Chink hate.. so childish and entertaining.

          • I think you missed the part where mainlanders don’t actually do a test for their licence, and HKers certainly *DO* – to international standards and with the ICAC watching.

If mainlanders are allowed to drive in HK there WILL be men women and children run over by them because they don’t know how to follow the rules.

If they actually have to do a HK based driving test first to prove they can actually follow the rules and not kill anyone then fine, but that’s not the plan.

HKers just don’t want their city to continue reverting from being ‘devloped’ into ‘devloping’ which, like it or not, is exactly what is currently happening with the influx of mainlanders.

        • …. and don’t buy for the whole ‘HKers are great drivers and follows all the rules, HK police are paragons of virtue and professionalism, blah, blah ..’. In fact, HKers are terrible drivers and their police are largely incompetent and venal. Maybe not as bad as mainlanders but, hey, HKers had 150 years of British rule; you think they would have learned something.

I have seen any number of drivers speeding through neighbourhoods with schools and children around not looking where they are driving, turning without using their indicator or lazily leaving the indicator on while driving through an intersection, backing up without looking, changing lanes without looking in their mirrors or indicating, drifting between lanes on highways, etc.

Again, as with the whole ‘manners’ on the MTR, IMO, Mainland-HK=same-same. It’s just a question of degree not quality.

  22. Well this is a public safety issue. Mainland drivers only obey the rules on the road when it is convenient to do so. This is not a “perception” issue as the article claims, it is a real daily observable fact.

While we can tolerate the Mainland nevou rich swanning it around Ocean Terminal splashing their cash and being rude on the MTR. It is another thing when some 4 year old gets splatted by some clueless mainland driver. When that does happen there will no end of public outrage here.

In short it is just not going to happen at all. The Central Gov is preoccupied with stability and I am certain that adding more fuel to the smoldering fire here will not be in their best interests.

  23. Mainlanders don’t know how to drive for Sh*t. coming from HK and having lived in the UK for 10+ years…allowing mainlanders to drive in HK is going to be like inviting an unsupervised 2 year old on speed and ecstasy into a china shop.

  24. If you let China tourists drive to Hong Kong

…they will park their car on the Tsing Ma bridge for sightseeing. They will not care about jamming the traffic.

…they will drive 20km/h on the highway, just for sightseeing or trying to find their way to Disneyland.

…they will accidentally drive on the “right” side of the road.

…they will be able to smuggle a lot more IPADS and IPHONES to China… which is actually good for the Hong Kong Economy… hell, let them come~!

  25. What if, mainland drivers required to become certified for driving in HK at their own expense. Then when they return back to the mainland, they will obviously be smug about their certification and elitist HK driving skills. This will be the incentive to improve driving on the mainland, courtesy of HK.

  26. Mainland Chinese should go back to push bikes and walking. They have no common sense or respect for other road users, completely blinkered to what else is going on around them. And the worst drivers of them all are there own police, no way this bunch of peasents should ever be allowed to drive in a civilized country.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driving_side

  27. Hong Kong traffic is already congested, I do not see how this is going to help the situation. Mainland China is trying hard to promote public transport, still many Chinese would rather drive. Should encourage more people to use public transport. Put aside the rest of the issues like driving recklessly or Chinese people do not obey traffic rules, etc; these reasons have some degree of stereotyping.

    • First we hate them for not respecting queues for buses.. so they want to drive private vehicles, and now you won’t let them drive… Maybe we should recommend for them to have personal choppers. They are not Arabs so i am sure we would be save. Just give everyone permission to fly mini choppers and let only the real Indians rights to drive taxis. Congestion issue fixed!!!
@ Anon generalization is not ok… pfff.. whatever first day on the interwebz? everything is ok as long as it’s entertaining. It’s the INTERWEBZ!!! It’s not like i am spreading smallpox to millions of people who have low life expectancy.

    • Chinese drivers are horrible and need to be retrained badly. I feel very sorry for Hong Kong. I can’t imagine what will happen to the one lane road near Ocean parks bus route. Oh sweet jesus.

When I first came to China I had optimism thinking the stereotype was false, but it’s totally accurate. Crossing the yellow/double and even triple parking at the norm. Honking every five seconds for shits. my favorite memory is when I saw two cars on a one way street (cars parked on both sides, fucking eh) and both cars sat there honking and yelling for ten minuets. No wonder none of you can land a female foreigner.

  28. Stupid Hongkies should be banned from having Chinese names, drinking water coming from China, making money out of squeezing mainland Chinese. Most importantly the lousy clamoring ungrateful island should be wiped out and all the men should be castrated and decapitated while all the women should be cast into China’s prisons for rapists and pedophiles. Go fuck Hongkies !

    • Now that’s just being unfair.. those who are able to afford bottled water wouldn’t drink that shit. So you are targeting only the poor with the water statement. No one likes cancer water yo. Hey and the whole world is making money from China.. it’s called WTO… that’s another reason them ex peasants can afford to buy cars to drive to HK and buy Louis Vuitton..
Why stop just at Hongkies? With you way of thinking the whole world could be in that target category. But do you real want a world that’s filled by cancer water, that only has people who are bad drivers, pedophile rapists? Who believe in murder, and violating other men’s balls? That would be a pretty bleak world. If i was a panda in that world, I would be a fairly sad panda. I r sad panda. I would eat bamboos and get obese, because i am a moody eater. So that world would probably have lots of fat pandas too. That might balance out the bleakness, cus FAT PANDAS are AWESOME!!

  29. A few days ago I was crossing the street in BJ. A driver in a SUV comes around the corner. I was about 6 feet from reaching the other side. The driver (obviously important in his/her own mind) cuts in front of me to make a right hand turn, I guess to remind me that I have no car therefore not important. This person almost drove onto the sidewalk just to get where they were going. Anyone that was mildly educated would have just went around behind me instead of in front of me. But this is Mainland thinking, ME FIRST ALWAYS.

    • try running at their car when they do that, they’ll freak out :p
it’s lot of basic domination “mine is bigger than yours” thing…

      • I do that on my bicycle. It may be my death one day, but I’ve had plenty cars (including white platers) hit brakes when they see that I’ve claimed THAT space where they want to be.

    • What kind of communist indoctrination caused you to think that ME FIRST ALWAYS is wrong?? You think Ford would’ve invented the first mass produced car if he didn’t think about himself first??
Rule of thumb is this in the real world.. Moving metal weighting more than 1000 lbs moving over 10km/h vs fat panda = Moving metal heavy thingy wins. Pretty simple equation right?? now a panda is probably 3 to 4 times the weight of a human.. so if Moving Metal vs Panda= Metal wins, Moving Metal vs human = Epic win for moving metal SUV or car or plane or Man of steel( I know who you are thinking about, but it’s not Stalin. I was referring to Superman) so yea.. mild education.. taught us that panda is tough but car is tougher (i would still probably bet money on Stalin in a fist fight between him and a panda, unless the panda is kung fu panda.. then Stalin would have to be drunk to win.. Drunken fist of STEEL!!!) History class taught us that Henry Ford, a farmer, rose to become one of the most successful industrialist of 20th century by the ME FIRST FUCK EVERYONE way of thinking. So why would you frown upon people’s aspirations? Equal opportunity for all no? They even teach that in Communism, as all are equal.. so that’s just not nice of you. I mean who wouldn’t want to be like Henry Ford? It’s only natural that everyone wants to be more like Ford. (riches, bitches and fame of being awesome) I think it’s your not so self important, and very RED communism thoughts got you feeling upset.. but hey I don’t judge or generalize… I mean that’s what Nazi’s do, and everyone knows that Nazis are losers.

  30. Why does it say that starting in March Hong Kongers will be allowed to drive to the Mainland? They already can and have for years.

  31. DEAR HongKongneeeee

    —->>>>>
YOU ARE ONLY GETTING A TASTE OF YOUR OWN MEDICINE.
    BELIEVE THAT !

1997 ring a bell ??? – leaving HK like groups of RATS invading the US, Canada, UK and Australia with your filthy manners and loud cantonese while creating MASSIVE car accidents and pushing housing prices to SKY ROCKET so the locals can not even afford a mortage… – to me, well you are the real locusts

I kind of feel sorry for HK as they’re the most confused peoples on the planet as far as identity goes.

LOOK AT THE PICTURES – to me they look like confused mainlanders ?!?!?! not to mention complete monkey’s.

    • The butthurt is strong in this one~

      • Every Country has experience the lash of HK drivers for the past 15 years.
Now they get to experience the lash of mainland drivers.
        The whole world is laughing.
        Butthurt indeed

        • Yes, yeeeessss, feed the butthurt.

Let it grow strong and give yourself over to it.

Prefer a Hong Konger to a mainlander any day… In fact, I married one.

          • Having a fucking laugh aren’t you. Hokie girls are bow-legged, acne ridden, with bad teeth and small tit and are dwarves!

          • Im really sorry to hear that, I’m sure once she turns 40 you’ll have second thoughts ahahaha.
Slugs, dwarves and acne filled snobs.

What is worse that a mainlander ?
A stuck up mainlander who think they’re owed something = HKNESE

          • Looks like we’ve got ourselves some racist badasses.

          • That is irrelevant. You are just defending your wife. I would defend my Chinese gf over a HK girl anyday…so it’s like two fleas arguing over the dog they are biting, you just want to defend HK at any and all costs over the mainland, even though you are not born there, but you were born in a country of the empire and now commonwealth.

God save the queen. Last I checked she still graces the back of canadian coins.

          • Oopsey-daisy! Looks like we got some retards on our hands!

It’s hilarious to think that a single city can somehow have certain genetic traits that differentiate it from other cities…. Especially considering that most countries don’t even have that.

IE: Scandinavians are usually known as being taller than average, blonde haired and blue eyed. So it’s like saying that Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland all look like that but Copenhagen looks like the Middle East……

So you completely fail at basic biology.

Secondly, my wife was born in Hong Kong, but what you probably didn’t know before you made the inane comments was that her mother is Taiwanese and her father is Japanese, which means that she in turn is half Japanese and half Taiwanese. See? Now you can throw around racist comments about the Japanese or Taiwanese….

Lastly, my comment wasn’t about physicality, because honestly speaking, what kind of fool marries someone based on how they look now? A complete retard with no thought for the future, that’s who. My comment about preferring a Hong Konger to a mainlander was about cultural differences…

Anyone who needed me to explain that should seriously put a helmet on to protect what few functioning brain cells you have.

          • Secondly, my wife was born in Hong Kong, but what you probably didn’t know before you made the inane comments was that her mother is Taiwanese and her father is Japanese, which means that she in turn is half Japanese and half Taiwanese.

I read your blog, so that is old news. Goes back some time. Irrelevant. HK is still part of China, whether you like it or not, irrelevant.

See? Now you can throw around racist comments about the Japanese or Taiwanese….

No racist comments been thrown around at all…only your issues popping their head up again, of all being well in Elijahs-ego laa laa land.

Lastly, my comment wasn’t about physicality, because honestly speaking, what kind of fool marries someone based on how they look now?

You tell me? You seem uber defensive where your wife is concerned?

A complete retard with no thought for the future, that’s who. My comment about preferring a Hong Konger to a mainlander was about cultural differences…

And what are those cultural differences exactly? Is it that when HK’ers cheat and lie and steal it is acceptable because HK has rule of law instead of rule by law on the mainland? Elaborate further, or what you post is meaningless.

    • Not all overseas cantonese speaking chinese are from HK. Most are from Guangdong. With any given population, some of them are rude. The difference in the rudeness is mainland cantonese have bad manners in a hill billy, country bumpkin way. No self awareness or desire to assimilate to basic societal norms in their current environment. On the other hand, HK cantonese value having face within the context of society a whole lot more so they are rude in a more snobby and stuck up way.

If you are living overseas, you should see that there is a world of difference between the areas mainland cantonese and HK cantonese have settled in. For example, dingy Chinatowns founded by the taishanese vs HK style malls. As for the housing issue, the mainland nouveau riche have done more damage than the HKers because they are a larger group with more buying power. In the last 5 years, housing prices have almost tripled from $200k to almost $600k with no end in sight.

HKers are HKers; no identity crisis going on. They shouldn’t be forced to identify with what they are not. Americans and Canadians are pretty similar as well but if you try to lump the two together, you’re going to get a lot of protests.

    • yos, u jelly we got flow and now u closer to your roots as a redneck in the burbs? No medicine here in HK(no public healthcare like communist states).. only got special K.. the pill not the cereal. what do you mean by locals yo? you like some aboriginal dude that didn’t get small pox or didn’t die from drinking mouth wash? They are the real confused ones about their ID. I know what I am, I no monkey. I R SUPRA PANDA!!! I’m all black and white and when i poop my butt is yellow!! BYESS

  32. Been on holidays for awhile, haven’t been on this site for a bit, but this is definitely not a good idea. Alot of people in China can barely drive safe enough on the right side of the road, can u imagine what would happen if they have to drive on the left? I have been driving since I was 16, grew up racing go karts of all cc levels, and I would imagine driving on the left would fuck my shit up, let alone the Chinese.

  33. HK, Taiwan, Xingjian, Tibet. . they all need to band together and take some action. Since they all do not think they are Chinese.

  34. The proposal would allow 50 Mainland vehicles to Hong Kong per day and all drivers have to have special permit to enter HK. In addition all driver must pass a “HK Road Safety Test” familiarizing themselves with traffic rules in HK and getting used to drive on the other side of the road. 50 HK cars per day would also be allowed to drive on the Mainland. It’s true that mainland driver’s skills are pretty bad on the Mainland, but HK has much more double- plate vehicles crossing into HK than the proposed 50 single- plate cars. None of those double- plate vehicles have been involved in any serious accidents (with injury or fatality) in HK so far. Of all the double- plate cars driving on the Mainland the driving skills of HK-Mainland Shuttle cars is not much better than any Mainland driver. It seems that as soon HK drivers hit the Mainland the adopt their Mainland counterpart’s driving skills. The protest is just another expression of HK people feeling superior in their culture, driving skills, etc. towards the Mainland. That may be so, but HKer’s should think who is keeping their economy going.

    • A rare post with some brains. I applaud you.

    • 50 a day is 50 too many!
Just imagine how much milk-powder they could stuff into those cars…the horror!
Knowing just how ridiculously bad and irresponsible drivers the mainlanders are, the only sensible thing would be to ban them from driving anywhere but the Mainland where they can proceed to eradicate their ill-mannered senseless brethren. Mainlanders need to be contained! Seriously!

  35. I learned to drive and passed the test in the UK. No way I want to drive in Mainland. Too dangerous. I rather take a cab or taxi. Seriously, no one wears seatbelts!!

    • Mate, no one wore seat belts in the UK back in the day (70′s-80′s)
Seat belts and driving sober is for fucking queers!

      • Yep I lost a front tooth when I was 7 or 8 in the UK back in the day because mummy dearest had me on her lap in the front seat without a seat belt. That was just normal back then.

Back to the Mainland drivers flooding HK scare debacle. Apart from public safety, though HK has a low number of cars per person compared to other countries, it has a very high number of cars per km of highway. Thus more mainland sightseers means more crowded roads means more local air pollution.

So I suggest they take the bus like everyone else in this fair city.

  36. You can toss as much money as you want at the mainland morons, but they’re still going to drive poorly as ever with that same old shiteating grin in the latest . Its about time Hong Kong got fed up with them.

  37. btw, sadly, China is the only place that has no Chinese driver jokes!

  38. China, the only place that I’ve been to where they actually REMOVE seat belt buckles from the backseat of taxis…. Shanghai in particular.

  39. Stop bitching about your good fortune. Japan (AND Korea) WISH they had your Chinese tourism problem. it’s ALL about the $$$$$$$$$$$ and without Chinese tourism, Hong Kong is sunk – it doesn’t matter how many times Anthony Bourdain praises Hong Kong – only Asians want to visit Hong Kong. Don’t piss off your Cash Cow.

    • ooooh no, far from that… stay in mainland, Japan doesn’t need nor want them…

    • They can piss them off as much as they want. You were right that mainland Chinese really want to go to Hong Kong, and making them upset won’t change that urge. Hong Kong could berate mainlander Chinese until they were red in the face, and there would still be an endless flow of mainland Chinese tourists.

Also, the money is #1 bit is false. Many people and nations do things which do not maximize their wealth for idealistic/cultural reasons.

      • And that’s why we saw what happened in Rawanda and Kosovo.
idealistic and cultural reasons are reasons that are backwards.
Remember cultral revolution?? or the genocide?
yea… me thinks working for cash is a more peaceful way to advance a group of people, even the Chinese.

    • They can come in by bus, train or airplane then….extra revenue for the taxi drivers to boot. The mainlander sense of entitlement that they can do whatever they want simply because they have cash is among the reasons why they are seen so disdainfully outside of China.

      • Oh god, this is some delicious irony.

Those with a sense of entitlement generally don’t have money. They just think the rest of world owes them.

Those with money can actually do whatever they want. Some refrain to do so, others don’t. But at the end of the day there’s nothing that poor people can do about it.

Ordinary HKers got a sense of entitlement like they are special, need to be protected in their little bubble, like some sort of hangover from their colonial past. But really, they are just poor and frustrated like the rest of the poorfags of the world. If those idiots were campaining to stop all mainland tourists from entering then you would be all against that, as it will negatively impact your economy. Because at the end of the day, they are bringing in the cash, and HK is run on nothing but cash.

Get used to it! HK will always bow down to those with money to spend. You’re no different from anywhere else in the world- there’s no need to put yourself on a pedistal, you’re just going to look all the more rediculous when you fall flat on your face.

    • If the mainland chinese truly had the money, they would be in Japan, Korea, Europe or some other expensive exotic place by now instead of meandering in HK while taking in all the locust insults.

  40. it would be chaos….as a mainland resident and hk frequent visitor card holder..i can tell you as much as i would love driving my car to hk…cuz the first thing i think of is why dont i have a fucking car when im in kongers..that would be the sign of the apocalypse …seriously it would end the cool bit…

    • i guess fifty cars aint that bad…bud dual plates are usually drivers by the way..drivers and people rich enough to get a life…i thought it would be a free for all…i guess reading this guys comment it kinda makes sense…yeah fuk..i wanna be one of those fifty!

  41. The funniest thing I saw in Beijing was a woman stuck on a flight of stairs in her car. She’d been exiting a car park, and obviously thought she was heading for the ramp that would let her exit the mini car park and drive out on to the road. But no, she’d headed for the small flight of stairs that took pedestrians from the mini car park down to the pavement. Idiot. She had to keep driving down the stairs while everyone watched. Must have wrecked her car.

I feel for HK. Mainlander drivers believe cars are more important than people.

    • Woman Driver!…Can’t let a woman get behind the wheel…(Oh, wait we were generalising against mainlanders, weren’t we?)

Mainlander Driver! ( Still seems like an over-generalisation)

      Idiot Driver (ah, that’s better……)

  42. I introduce the inner-workings of a Mainlander while driving:

I am the most important thing in existence and my car is an extension of me.
Everyone and everything else on this road is an inconvenience that I must obnoxious honk my horn or speed up to remove.
Rules don’t apply to me, they are just for everyone else to follow while I get ahead.
Wearing a seat belt in my car is an insult to my driving ability and thus losing face and I just can’t have it.
Every space large enough to fit my car is a parking space, that includes your front lawn (if you had one).
When I hit someone it is best to make certain they are dead so they don’t sue me or rush off in a panic hoping they don’t copy down my license plate.

This is who I am. This is why I shouldn’t be allowed into drive my car in Hong Kong.

  43. Mainlanders are generally idiots when they drive!
    INSULTED? Good! should be! nyagh!
they should not be allowed to drive in any country.
I fully support the “Honkies” on banning mainlanders from driving in HK.
    reasons
    skill level
    diligence
    legalities
until responsible driving is practiced in mainland they should be banned from driving in other countries – they drive like idiots!
HK people don’t want people run over two two three times by these cold hearted zombies!
    overseas chinese would unanimously agree.

  44. As much as people complain and whine about Mainlanders coming to Hong Kong, expect the trend to continue and accelerate. There’s NOTHING any of you can do about it other than whine. China says it will happen and the PLA garrison in Hong Kong will ensure that it does. Hahahaha

  45. These Hongkongers need to be executed. I do not understand why the Chinese government even puts up with this type of bullshit. After 1997 the CCP should have immediately reintegrated hong kong back into the mainland. Repave roads to drive on the right etc. These Hong Kong people clearly don’t see themselves as Chinese anymore after 150 years of sucking the white man’s dick. May they leave our glorious country and never come back.

  46. This is a great site to see hker and mainlanders bombing and flaming each other, almost each post is full of racism and posted by some uncivilized crap that owns a computer, stereotyping all mainlanders is probally the only part of life hkers enjoy, and maybe mainlanders spamming around as stress releaf makes them nice and high. To all chinese here (im chinese as well) stop bombing each other and get a life, bombing wont solve anything, i cant believe therer still so many uncivilized racial chinese out there stereotyping all mainlanders calling them locusts, some of them are annoying but hkers aren’t any better, speaking loud in public like koreans and iscolating others not learning english isnt any better than driving recklessly like a retard.
btw mainlanders do drive like insane wizards, mayb due to the fact that china is overpopulated and many pedestrians dont give a shit to traffic lights, in my humble oppinion china should refine its laws and all associated crap. driving around like headless flies will put everyone at risk, so thats y its easy to differenciate drivers in australia by their looks, ignoring red lights=FOB driver lol

    • but the interwebz is so fun, especially Chinese flame wars. Only such a proud people can piss and shit at each other so much to prove they are the big man. So funny la(r) However you people say it. Lil frog in a well is fun to watch. Multiple frogs in well slinging shit at each other… MORE WHOLESOME FUN!!! Keep the flames high, for you are all proud choosen people of Chung Kuo, the descendants of the 虫 er… i mean 龙 or 龍 whichever .

  47. I’ve lived in Qingdao for 5 years and i have to agree with the HK protesters. I hate the way people drive here… running lights, honking horns, driving too fast or just parking on the sidewalks as if they are parking lots so that pedestrians have to walk in the streets. They are so rude and self-centred and the police could care less. I wouldn’t want mainland drivers to drive anywhere. There are already far too many of them.

  48. I wonder how many HK people feel China pride VS HK pride. Mainlanders seem to think Bruce Lee was Mr. China, but I’ve read that he didn’t really have much to do with the mainland.

  49. Recently, it seems that conflict between Hong Hongers & Mainlanders is getting increasingly fierce, from the insult of Mr. Kong to the Hong Kongers’ protest aganist mailanders’ driving cars to Hong Kong on tour. We cannot deny that mainlanders’ traffic safety awaress is still waiting for further enhancement and the explosive increasing amount of mainlanders is expected to trigger traffic jam or even traffic accidents in Hong Kong. However, the consolidation between Hong Kongers and mainlanders should be considered to be further enhanced, for the simple reason that we are all Chinese people.

  50. As a mainlander , I reject the plan.
