Can you believe what the blind says? A poor area won’t suffer that much loss, they intentionally exaggerated [the situation], so that rich people will show off by taking out their wallets and donate money.

I beg you guys, post less of this kind of vexing news. I have no problems with donating money, I just faintly wish I could know where my money goes.

Every time when I see news about an earthquake or see the homeless people, there’s a sadness I feel that can’t be put into words. Nor can I help them. No matter where an earthquake happens, they are all innocent people, all very ordinary people. It might be that they have different dialects, different lifestyles, but I hope that in our hearts we all wish for peace in the world and between people. I hope people in the disaster area can get help from the government and can all eat well and sleep well.

People in Yunnan Earthquake Eat Potatoes & Instant Noodles to Satisfy Their Hunger

September 8, The Yunnan Yiliang County earthquake has already caused 80 local deaths, with 744,000 people affected. The disaster victims are living in temporary relief tents, and eating instant noodles and potatoes to satisfy their hunger. As it is understood, the earthquake area’s requirements for food and drinking water are very large.

September 9, Yunnan Yiliang County Luobinghui Square, people are standing in line to get food at the relocation site for the earthquake affected. The free lunches and suppers provided by the government are very rich. Because there are too many people, many volunteers are assisting at the scene maintaining order. The villagers all express that the food tastes good. This picture is of children getting their free dinner.

September 9, the third day of Yunnan Yiliang County “9.07” earthquake relief work. Because many of the roads in the earthquake area have been seriously compromised and there are many disaster victims, there’s a shortage of tents, food, bottled water and other goods in the disaster area. As of 12 noon of September 9, this earthquake has caused 81 deaths and 821 injuries in Yiliang County. This picture is of people waiting to get the freely provided instant noodles.

Collective sigh of relief, at least they have instant noodles.

  • Poltergeist

Well, honest question: Where can you donate money for the eartquake victims and be sure that they receive it?

    • BigJ

There is a man named “Alex Trebek” who host a game show called “jeopardy”. He may be able to help you. Just don’t trust Chinese donation centers or whatever. Just go to Yunnan and give money to people you think need it.

      • Irvin

That is the ONLY guarantee way.

  • eattot

    555555555555! sad!

damn red cross, they ruined people’s trust, now, people do not donate much any more.
hope more and more liberities can do real charity.
as han hong, fan bingbing, also some hong kong liberities…not some fake charity just grabe money make it worse.

    • k

Yup, no one wants to donate money to the Red Cross, because no one wants to buy Guo Meimei (insert any other official’s whore on the side) another hand bang or car. Can’t say I blame ’em.

      • k

heheh i mistyped “hand bang”…totally different meaning there :)

        • linette

          hand bang…
          hahah…That’s funny. too much banging.
@k, those are your wedding photos? They are lovely. You two are lovely couple. :)

          • k

Yeah, we had a very small wedding, 10 people came to it :) Well, right now we both have some baby weight to lose….I mean I have an excuse, just pushed a baby out 5 months ago…my husband not so much..I had to smack the noodles out of his hands tonight!

          • linette

Is he one of those instant noodle addict. I can relate to that. It’s very addictive. I am the type that gain weight easy too. I always have to watch and not eat too much rice, bread, or noodle. I eat protein and veggies.

          • k

Koreans LOVE their instant noodles…it’s an obsession over there. The carb foods…::drooooooooooooooooool::: Pasta with garlic bread….::drooooooool::: I’ve been substituting all my meals and snacks with jars of baby food….low in calories, nutritious, cheap, and easy to eat. I miss chewing though….I haven’t chewed any food all week. Now I’m tempted to go make the frozen pizza in my fridge…..

          • linette

make the frozen pizza in my fridge………

            no..don’t do it. :)

Koreans, Chinese, Japanese are all obsess with instant noodle. When I was a kid, I used to have it for breakfast all the time. hahah…just like American have cereal. You go to the supermarket and it’s like hundreds of different flavors of instant noodle. so crazy. You know Chinese invented noodle but the Japanese invented INSTANT noodle.
“Instant noodles were invented by Momofuku Andō of Nissin Foods, Japan.[1”
And it’s so bad for you. So much salt not healthy. :(

Surely you meant “head-bang”, we know.

          • mr. wiener

The ugliness of humans … does it outweigh the beauty? How does it start? How to stop it? We live in the age of Entertainment. We want to be entertained, because the ugliness of the world becomes more and more louder and vivid. We were always ugly like this, but now we can see everything what’s going on in every corner of the world. Reading terrible articles of human behavior makes me crave for entertainment that will distract me from the real questions!
How can people give births to angelic children into this semi-hell world?
I’m tired of people being ugly. I’m tired of all the pain and suffering in the world everyday. There’s too much of it.
I want to ignore it … I will ignore it … I’m ignoring it, just leave the money on the table and go away!

“china is still safer than USA.”

really? i see a fight pretty much once a week, i’d say the people here are pretty violent. murders, violent crime? eh, maybe, who knows, considering how crime statistics are way under reported by the local governments. i tell what is definitely not safer in china: personal property. not to mention the buildings, the bridges, the sidewalks, the food, the water, the milk, the traffic, the air. you can possibly make a case for violent crime, but to be honest, you have no real credible statistics you could back that claim up with, but let’s assume that it is true. the US is still a safer place to live when taking everything else into consideration.

          • David.is.Dawei

            Good Points Moop,

It is the shit you can’t see you have the most to “fear”.

Speaking of which…Thankfully…No Squat toilets in the USA (unless you are hiking in the woods).

My colleagues in China tell me they prefer using these in public; that they are more sanitary. I have to disagree with them. I Hate using them. Nothing clean about it.

It is comical when I go to use a Western toilet (in China) and there are footprints on the toilet seat.

            Cheers,
            Dave

          • Jennster

i hate squatting toilets. chinese ppl think i am weird for liking sitting toilets because they think squatting is more hygenic (but also more prone to the hermaphroid problem). westeners think squatting is more uncivilised looking etc. however the squatting toilets in japan are clean.

          • Getrealson

Chinese people – think – hygiene

            GetRealSon

When using the XiShoujian, do you think people actually wash their hands (with soap)?

When in China, I realize there must be a paper shortage in the world because they are never available in restaurants, bathrooms, etc – so I start to horde them for when needed.

            Cheers,

“People will be surprised to know that China is no safe haven from serial killers and perhaps even a worse problem than USA.”
a few serial killers in 1.4billion people sure is alot!!!
and moop lol!!! “i see a fight pretty much once a week”
HOLY FUK!!! you see people fighting almost once a week? really? i cant believe it!!! OH LORD!!! i cant believe it!!!

          • Yeah jin….I mean who gives a fuck about a few serial killers? Why does every door of every apartment look like a door for a crack house, even though there are bao an “guarding” the entrances and CCTV cameras everywhere and bars still covering most of the windows? Because steel doors and steel covered windows are so charming, right? You never see fights? Do you ever go out in public? If you live in China and don’t see fights ALL the time, you’re either lying or you’re full of shit.

I’ll take my chances with the US serial killers and millions of gun-toting Americans. I stand alot better chance of getting creamed by some shit head with no business driving a car or ran down from behind by some doof on an E-bike with his phone glued to his ear.

Yeah….China is such a peaceful utopia.

          • Boris

            Mr. Wolf,
Not wishing to side with Jin on this, as his posts tend to be as useful as mosquito repellent in the Antarctic, the idea that America is more dangerous than China is worth dwelling on. I can’t speak for the States, but I’d say in England danger was regional. You could live in an upmarket university town like Bath or York or Cambridge and almost never come into contact with crime. Alternatively you could live somewhere like Manchester’s Moss side and find yourself mugged at knife-point by gangs of teenagers on a daily basis.
Overall, I’d say China is worse because of the traffic. In fact, in China my biggest danger is to myself, and if I’m never sent down for throttling someone to death it will be a miracle.
PS… d’you know how to send audio files as emails? I haven’t figured out how to get some music to you yet.

          • Yeah…you’re right about that Boris. It’s the same in the States…there are areas you just avoid and the danger risks go way down, though I’ve always managed to avoid being a target in those kind of places. Like you, I’m also amazed that I haven’t spent even a single minute in jail here. I’m a defiant and confrontational motherfucker.

You should be able to convert your audio files to MP3 format and send them by e-mail. Or open a Soundcloud account, upload your music and set it for only sharing files with people you grant permission

          • jin

wolf are you dumb or just blind?
my post wast a reply to YOUR words.
“People will be surprised to know that China is no safe haven from serial killers and perhaps even a worse problem than USA.”
get it? here youre saying that china is not safe from serial killers and perhaps even worse than USA. get it yet??? you talked shiit and i said that china is safer from serial killers if compared to USA. why dont people read their own dumb posts and read other peoples post before they talk about something that the person never said. and you dont see people fighting in USA? not only in china do people fight. even in the netherland with their super low crime rate, i see fights when i go out at night. all you need is 1 immature/violent/rude…. ass to start a fight.

          • Wow jin, you really stuck it to me with that one :-/ Contact Fauna to receive your Brownie Button.

The key word is “perhaps”. I’ve seen plenty of other articles pointing out that there are plenty of serial killers in China at any given time, it’s just not important enough to me to dig them all out for you. If you want to rely on statistics provided by Chinese police and media any argument is going to be inconclusive. But hey, if it makes you feel better about yourself to claim China is so safe, then have at it.

Honestly, I know they feel they aint got a lot of choice, but these places they live in are disasters waiting to happen.
Who in the right mind would build right under unstable mountain ranges, i bet the rocks fall on a regular basics and wipe some one out, never mind in a earth quake.
China got plenty of space to relocate them to safe areas, but they aint going to move are they, so they stuck with this ongoing problem for ever.

  • BigJ

I think the Chinese government is doing a good job in this case. People are saying they are not treating them good enough…..but shit, you can’t give them more then what they are used to..no one would want to leave this place if they lived better in relief camp then their normal situation….It’s a shame people are in this situation….the key to helping someone is to get them back on their feet to help them self…not treat them better then what they are use to.

    • moop

but the government isnt doing a good job. who makes the building codes? who enforces the building codes? who contracts out the work to their friend’s companies instead of whichever company is the most qualified? i’ve been through an earthquake this size and no building collapsed and that was like 20 years ago

      • The Enlightened One

I agree with moop. The government is to blame. The officials just sweep up all the money and then emigrate abroad.

This is not speculation. I know PERSONALLY, a few government officials. One that after being investigated, quickly fled to… I think it was Ohio and started up a grape farm with his mistress… a 20 year old waitress he met. He left his family back in China and broke ties with them.

Seriously, these guys are shameless. The absolutely WORST people I have ever met in my life. And I have people that have gone to prison for murder.

only a 5.6 earthquake and this is necessary? i’m surprised the whole city didnt collapse. really pathetic construction, but we already know that and the chinese already know that. what will the local government solution be? they’ll give the contract to someone unqualified who has guanxi like that chef who built that bridge. guanxi is the root of corruption in china

nope, saw pictures of a school that collapsed on itself and killed 3 kids, but rocks right>?

  • k

awwww poor babies :( But everyone looks like they are taking care of each other….

  • The Enlightened One

The first pictures look crappy but then the next set looks like they are doing a good job. I mean, I hope they don’t expect lobster and crab because their houses fell down.

Seriously, the only reason why things like this happen after such an earthquake (not a very strong one) is due to absolutely shabby construction.

Granted, the people of China maybe don’t know the difference because good and bad materials etc. BUT the contractors and government do. Now that the people have learned the hard way (their houses falling down). They should rally and demand better quality for their money. House prices are starting to become on par with and surpass western prices. Yet, they all collapse at any sign of movement (excepts the ones made from Japan companies).

The government claims you can only legally own the house for 70 years… as if most of those buildings will even last that long. After only 5 years new residential complexes look like a shadow of their former selves.

    • k

You know you would think after a few of those big earthquakes and schools falling down on children and killing thousands, the first couple of times, the Chinese people would demand nothing less then good construction.

      • sonny

i’m sure most are aware of the issue, but no one wants to stick their neck out — especially those that saw what happened to recent activists.

it may seem like a lack of character, but i think once the economy rebalances people will be in a better position to speak out.

    Wish the best for Yunnan

  • Cleo

When this happens in neighboring Pakistan, the international press doesn’t jump down the throat of the national government – they just show poor people in trouble. I guess criticizing the government makes one feel less obligated to donate funds or to feel guilty that misfortune befalls the undeserving innocents.

Obviously, that newish building they are camped outside of is fine. And unlike Beichuan, the Yunnan structures I have seen on tv are not new construction.

    • Gontraf

When I contacted the international red cross to help with a bit of cash, they said disaster relief was managed locally and I was redirected to the PLA’s website for my donation.

  • Cleo

You know, how the Dursleys kick around Harry Potter and constantly blame him for the earth turning on its axis but no one ever discusses what an ugly fishface Voldemort has – that’s what it’s like reading coverage of China versus Japan. What a treat.

    • mr. wiener

      ……?

      • Rod

It’s kind of like reading poetry. There’s probably some meaning in it, but I don’t get it.

After further mental gymnastics I think I finally understood this. I think you’re saying The Chinese people are the Dursleys, The Chinese govt are Harry Potter and The Japanese are Vortomort, correct?
As you are also Chinese [I assume] does this mean you are also one of the Dursleys? If so which one? Evil cousin Cleo Dursley maybe?
      I don’t know, I’m just a muggle.

What are you talking about???How did Japan get thrown into this?? Maybe I don’t understand Harry Potter…All I know is he is a little Englishmen that can do magic…I think I missed your point….are you talking about the Yunnan earthquake?

      • B*tches, Leave

I think he means it’s like Batman being really the real face of Bruce Wayne. The face that’s Bruce Wayne is actually the real mask. The Batman is dark and instills fear, but he enforces justices and does what’s right (even when people will hate him for that, like for example taking the blame for Harvey Dent in the Nolan-Batman universe). The Joker, however, is a funny looking clown with a smile, but everyone knows that he’s pure evil madness. The villains in the Batman universe are all kinds of mental cases, which is an extraordinary thing to rely on in a comic book. Anyone can think of any kinds of superpowers, but the way they do it in the Batman Universe it’s amazing.
No, what I really wanted to say is that Nolan’s movies about Batman were superb. I never had the pleasure to experience such emotions in a movie before. Well, maybe in Lord of the Rings. I can’t wait for the Hobbit, but somehow I think that Peter Jackson makes those movies more for the money than for the art (like he did in LotR).
And this is how we went from “Yunnan Earthquake’s victims” to “The Hobbit”.

        • The Enlightened One

Yes, there is clearly a connection.

I am happy to say Peter Jackson will be making a new movie after “The Hobbit” which will be called “Lord of the Retards” starring Cleo.

        • linette

Cleo always post some philosophy that keeps us wondering what is he trying to say. Very deep.

    • The Enlightened One

      Yeah, I can speak retard too… watch…

You know how the dog barks at the moon and monkeys fling their poo at people passing by at the zoo? Well, it begs the question why we all exist and this relates to the quantum theory of physics that was strongly disagreed with by Einstein because he thought “Like god, I don’t play with dice.”

But we can all agree that god didn’t get drunk in a while on cheap Bai jiu which explains the existence of retards like you Cleo. You dig?

      • linette

I think Cleo is using a translation program. That is why his comments come out like that. When you use translation program from Chinese to English, it comes out weird.

    • Dat Ankle

You have made the most puzzling comment here.

    • elizabeth

      Let me try.

      Harry Potter = China
      Voldemort = Japan
      Dursleys = the press

      Paraphrase:
The press kicks China around and constantly blames her for rocking the boat like in the Senkaku case but none ever discusses what an ugly toad Japan really is.

    • donscarletti

So, Dumbledore’s due to stand down soon, Vice Principal McGonagall misses her scheduled meeting at Beauxbatons, the students find out and are wondering where the fuck she is. Fell of her broom? Snape tried to gank her? Turned to follow he who must not be named?

The Dumbledore bravely steps to the lectern and addresses the students:
“Watch out, it’s like VOLDEMORT, and he’s like RIGHT fucking BEHIND YOU calling you rude names. Don’t worry, I’ve sent Snape and like a shitload of Aurors to KICK HIS ASS! FUCK-YEAH! HOG-WARTS HOG-WARTS! WOOOH!”

Seamas pipes up: “Dumbledore is right, he who must not be named once called my ma a slut, then he shat in my mailbox.”

Harry’s like “well, Voldemort gave me this fucking scar like ages ago and I’m still fucking pissed, even though I don’t remember it and he’s been quiet and incorporeal since then.

And like that, the whole dining room decends into chatter and nobody remembers what they were discussing before.

I think Cleo is using her confusion spell “Bullshiticase confusitato!!”

You can tell how CCTV has really gone too far these past few years. All these people sleeping rough to be first in line when Wen Jiabao shows up…

  • All I can say is that at least some help is getting through. Maybe Japan and other kind nations will step in and help like they did during the aftermath 2008 quake.

Too bad that since the quake that heralded the death of Mao, that China still hasn’t been able to build at least moderately quake proof structures. I wonder how many schools collapsed this time?

  • BigJ

Chinese are opening their hearts and their wallets for earthquake victims in Yiliang county, Southwest China’s Yunnan province.

The county has received 108.81 million yuan ($17.16 million) in cash donations as of 5 pm on Monday, said a media officer surnamed Liu from the county information office.

That amount includes about 68.5 million yuan donated through the provincial government, 94.5 million yuan through the provincial charity federation and 13.42 million yuan through the city and county governments.

I bet some officials have some big smiles on their faces :).
I can imagine the conversation..”OK….let buy the cheapest boxes of out dated noodles we can find…..should only have to spend 1/2 a mill……and the rest we keep. Any objections????…………………………………….OK boys…Gambei!!!!!

  • Dat Ankle

They need more tents but other wise its not as worse as I thought it would be. It would be nice if China would learn from to build good and strong structured buildings that wont fall on a 5.6 earthquake or loaded trucks, but that might be asking for too much.

    • MrT

rocks fell on the buildings, cars, bus’s,trucks, bikes, 4x4s( lots of them in that town), people, cats and dogs(a donkey got waked as well), not a lot fell down. Most was crush impact damage.
I suppose they could level all the mountains, problem solved.
I don’t think you can build to protect against 100 ton rocks coming down the mountain side at 100kmh.
You see i made the effort to do a Google image search and it revealed rocks every where that wernt there before the earthquake. Conclusion, they fell off the mountain and landed on various objects as listed above.

      • Dat Ankle

Thanks, I didnt know that but if not a lot of rocks fell then why would so much people be living on the street. How big were the rocks and where in the city did they fall, near housing buildings, work buildings, and stuff like that. I have no idea about the city so I dont very much know.

    • linette

China would learn from to build good and strong structured ….

It’s not that China don’t know how to build strong better buildings. The corrupt china officials stole all the gov’t money from the china people. They buy substandard building materials and they contract to their friends so they can split the money. They share the stolen money with the inspectors so nobody bother to follow building codes. At the end, all you have is substandard building that will fall with the smallest earthquake. Like their bridges with three cargo trucks.
These china corrupted officials are not only thieves. They are murderers.

      • Jennster

also throughout history (compared to japan at least), their land has been to0 generous to them in regards to natural disasters so people are lazy and don’t take precautions. if the land give them earthquakes everyday the chinese will also develop a culture eventually of caring for each others lives.

        • linette

if the land give them earthquakes everyday the chinese will also develop a culture eventually of caring for each others lives..

People supposed to do their best to have consideration and care for others. Not only during natural disaster. This is something all gov’t should promote and parents should teach their children with or without natural disaster.

          • Jennster

what they only teach is respect elder and parents. mannerism, honor, poliiteness, respect others etc i don’t know why they don’t teach that.

          • linette

what they only teach is respect elder and parents. mannerism, honor, poliiteness…..

I remember as a kid growing up in Hk, the Hk television have kid programs teaching kids to respect their parents, teachers, and elder. Be helpful and don’t be selfish. Always share and be considerate. Wait for you turn. Give your seat to the elder and disabled. Open doors for other. They have programs promote sanitation like wash your hands, and cover your mouth when cough, and don’t share chopsticks, and don’t double dip..etc… Practice food sanitations to prevent contamination of food. etc..etc…

All that should be promote and taught at young age on TV.

        • mr. wiener

Yunnan has a very high population of non han Chinese. I think you’ll find that rather than them flocking to the mountains for the “generous” arable land [it ain’t] They have been forced there at some time in the past by the expansion of the han. These folk were the losers in the populate China game, and they are still paying the price.

          • eattot

            not really!

Money is not everything. I rather live in a 600sq feet apartment in a country where all men are treated equal under the gov’t law. A gov’t that practice equal opportunity for all. Equal access to healthcare and education for rich or poor. Welfare for the poor. Old age pension. So no one will suffer from hunger or homeless. A gov’t that have laws and enforce rules and regulations such as food and building safety. A gov’t that has anti-corruption policy. No segregation between citizens. Citizens abide to rules and regulations as simply as crossing the street or driving, waiting on line, use the public bathroom.
I will take that and raise my kids in city like that over living in 3000sq feet fancy condo in Shanghai China where all of the above are lacking.

It’s funny how some Chinese think that war is just so easy. We’re big. We’re strong. Who cares if we die as long as we make a point.

            Philippines? War

I’m quite saddened to start my first comment by saying mean things to you, but you just went full retard here Eattot.

            “long time no war already…….”

War is not like a rain that people should eagerly be waiting to fall on them every now and then to boost economy.
In the end what did war ever brought to our race but missing limbs, shattered families and radioactive lands?

Let’s live your nationalistic dream and say that tomorrow China invades Little Japan.

What benefit other than taking revenge for something that happened nearly 70 years ago would there be?
What resources are there to plunder in Japan other than sushis and what is found between a geisha’s thighs?
How much money would then be needed to secure the island shores against the nearby US bases?

Stop seeing things through your nationalistic looking glass for a second and try to embrace the full picture. All countries are connected through games of alliances; therefore there is no attacking Japan without sparking a global conflict. What good could this be to anyone? Would the money that your government transfer from Education and Health to Ministry of Defence be of any benefit to the average Zhou (老百姓) ?

You found it sad when this man drowned in a river after saving three people but you’d have no second thoughts about participating in a mass murder ? Talk about double-standards.

May I suggest that you stop playing “Defend the Diaoyu Island” (保卫钓鱼岛) on your Ipad and watch some meaningful movies about the vacuity of war instead ? “The Human condition” by Kobayashi or “Hell in the Pacific” by John Boorman would do for a nice start.

          • Bo Xilai For Emperor

@eattot: And what’s wrong with getting attention, China has lots of domestic problems that needs attention other than stupid fake nationalistic rhetoric, you talk about war and how the CCP is a good gov’t? Have you been living under a rock for the past 50 years? You know why I use BXL? Listen to what he was telling others about re-distribution of wealth and power to the people, it’s more like power and wealth to himself and his family, look at these refugees here in Yunnan, they’re in such bad condition, why don’t you ask the top politiburo cocksuckers and BXL to live in these conditions for just 1 day!!! These politiburo cocksuckers talk about how much they hate Japan, USA, and The West, then why do they keep on sending their kids overseas to study and get citizenship? Planning their escape and retirement in a real developed humane society? Come to Vancouver BC, you’ll see how the average Chinese citizens’ taxpayer dollars were being spent, how morality was abused by these Chinese international students who talk about destroying Japan, while driving Lexus watching Japanese porn and how much they hated the West but drives a Bentley, you tell me eattot, can China even afford having a war? Read up on how Falkland War happened? Argentina started the fight claiming the historical ownership of the islands, but it was merely to hide the country’s worsening economic and social situation and guess what?! They lost to a country who’s thousands of miles away. I guess you lack a lot of historical education and brainwashed by the CCP

          • Bo Xilai For Emperor

@eattot: If you want to talk about fighting the Japanese, in WW2, the KMT did much more than your beloved CCP, read up on some history then you’ll know how stupid you sound. And don’t forget even the beloved Chairman Mao praised the Japanese and thanked them for attacking China so that he can finally defeat the KMT after the 2nd Sino-Japanese War.

          • PLAN

In addition to that, it takes a large amount of money to wage a war. Its not a simple as just throwing soldiers over the island. Also let’s not forget that many of China’s major cities are lined along the coast. They could easily be taken out be JSDF or ROC naval forces. China does not yet possess a blue water navy so it would lose on that front. Along with airpower too.

so as others have said, on this topic like many others you’ve posted on, you’ve gone full retarded.

why don’t you go volunteer first to fight on the front lines? or take a boat to go protest then? I guess since you’ve never tasted freedom, you don’t know how good it is.

So China don’t need one child policy. They need a few earthquake. Scary. :(

        • linette

China netizens should post in their Chinese websites to make fun of the china gov’t. Like who needs one child policy. The way the china gov’t built their buildings they just need a few earthquake to control population. And the after rescue effort and money stolen from charity ensure the survival rate close to zero.

        • Rick in China

Actually, Linette, you’re right – a few earthquakes would be *good* for the poor areas of China.
Why? All their shit buildings get demolished, the government gets pressure to fund and rebuild, and they end up with newer, much better buildings, and a stronger economy. Dujiangyan is an example. Whenever I drive out to Qingcheng Mountain hotsprings I go through Dujiangyan, hit by the big quake in Sichuan. It’s *all new*. They received so much money it’s like a brand new city, even though not much of the city itself was damaged – they started knocking down old schools and building bright new big ones. Many are still not in use, they just spend a shitload and rebuild everything – more than they may need – likely because all the funds need to be used and contractors “make friends” and lots of money is funneled around etc BUT, the every day peasant sees and lives in a whole new area where before it was falling apart shit already.

          • linette

            Rick in China
That is amazing. So this time around the corrupt chinese officials didn’t steal money from the project or rebuilding sichuan. That is good to hear. It’s also maybe because sichuan earthquake was getting so much attention from the media and the world. They are too scare to steal money.

      • Jennster

there was a 5 magnitude last July with 0 damage. not sure about a 6.8 though.

        • David.is.Dawei

          Hi Jennster,

An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter Scale would be 80 times more powerful than a 5.0 earthquake.

Depending on the construction and the composition of the ground the building sits on will determine the level of damage.

I live near Boston (USA) and a great deal of that city is built on landfill/posts in mud (including all of Chinatown). Mud transfers most of that energy into the building. Boston is one of the oldest cities in the US – They estimate an earthquake that would be considered minor in California would level most of Boston. Surprisingly, there are earthquakes all the time in New England (Northeastern USA), but most of them are minor and never felt.

          Dave

          • Luckily Shanghai is built on mud with no earthquake precautions taken. Buildings have been known to fall over when it rains here.

          • Rick in China

Shanghai has other problems – like cracking sidewalks due to way too many skyscrapers putting more weight than the ground can handle.

  • Getrealson

When the Chinese win a gold medal at the Olympics and start talking shit about how great they are, Do they not remember things like this?

When they gloat about their economy, brave Senkaku protesters and their superiority over Japan, do they not remember things like this?

I understand “accentuate the positives, eliminate the negatives” just like the song but they take denial to new extremes. Infrastructure that crumbles with the slightest jolt, an economy built on a suffering population, rank corruption and blatant theft of public money, Charities so decayed and void of compassion they can no longer be considered charities but straight up scams (not much different to charities anywhere I guess but the Chinese red cross goes above and beyond when it comes to theft) and a national character of dog eat dog.

It is all just big talk in the end from from chinese people. You want to know how they do it???They blame everyone else for the littlest thing to the biggest to deflect from themself….they get you hating someone so bad that you forget about your own problems…and once the hate is so strong..even things you know are chinese problems get blamed on other people. I love to see the chinese government at work…it’s an amazing system that is very affective.

    • Jennster

it takes one to know one stupid YANK

      • Boris

Do you mean BigJ has just gone full retard or that the American government is equally effective at manipulating its public? I didn’t find anything he wrote particularly contentious.

        • mr. wiener

          It could be Cleo-speak..?

        • Rick in China

If I had to guess I’d presume the “takes one to know one part” and “yank” equate to the American government similarly deflecting domestic issues through generating hate towards other countries or groups. “The War on Terror”, “The War on Drugs” – great ways to generate massive corporate profit while rallying people into “Down with muslims!” “Stop the mexicans and their cartels!” mindsets, while ignoring the fact that the US government is essentially corporate owned.

          • Boris

Bugger! When did all this happen?
            Nobody tells me anything!

        • linette

Countries like America, Canada, Uk all have good gov’t system. They have the right concept of human rights. Unfortunately there are people abusing it and taking advantage of it. Even stealing and abusing taxpayers money. They also have bribery and all cover up by using donation and bonus. Every country has its own problems.

      • mr. wiener

Commas are important and and easy to use.

      • Wow….YANK. Like that’s supposed to be a kind of cheap shot? Oh boo fkn hoo :(

        • Jennster

          dumb YANK

          • Here, I’ll pretend for the next 2 seconds that I give a single fuck you called me a dumb Yank………………..There. Done.

Just don’t call me a cotton-headed ninny muggins, ya dumbass bitch.

          • Rick in China

In some cases, no reply is the best reply :D

          • Aw C’mon Rick! Just having a little fun.

          • I have something Jennster can yank on.

          • bigJ

Jen…you’re just a one note pony. hahaha.
At least tell me why you disagree with me.I would not simply respond to something you said with “dumb chinamen”…..I would tell you why I think your comment was wrong and not hate you for voicing your opinion. We can at least agree to disagree.

          • The Enlightened One

Yank isn’t even an insulting word. It’s was just used to describe the people living in the Northern part of the the U.S. Hence the New York Yankees.

It’s like calling a Canadian a Canuck… Vancouver has a Hockey team named after it. It just is a slang word for Canadian.

I find it hilarious when people try to use words to insult people that really don’t have a bad meaning. “You dumb YANK! Omg, I called you a YANK and I got you so good. I am so cool, so clever too!” Jennster… come on… don’t be so lame…

          • whiskersthecat

It’s true. I kind of take pride in the word “Yank”. It’s like a playful nickname you earn for being a totally rad dude.

      • Efe the foreigner

hey, hey, hey, the term yank should be used in an endearing manner. everyone loves the skany yanks.

    • bigJ

Lol….ok…I like China’s why better then America’s way….America will come up with good lies to tell people and reasons that seem somewhat justifiable. The difference is China don’t a fuck what they tell you, if they tell you anything at all. They don’t have to explain anything to you. I have respect for that absolute power. I would run a country the same way China does. It’s every governments dream to have things run like China.Answer to no one, and absolute power. And a Chinese government official have one of the greatest jobs on the planet. “Money for nothing and your chicks for free”. And once you stole enough money, just go to a country like Canada and have a great time. I’m not shit talking China. I never said what they do was right or wrong.

And calling me a”Yank”…..well that kind of upset me since i’m Canadian.

      • linette

What’s wrong with being Yank?. Yanks live happy lives.

        • bigJ

What if i called you a Jap? They seem to live happy lives.

          • linette

Nothing wrong of being jap or yank as long as you are living under a gov’t that treat you like human.

          • BigJ

I agree with Linette. I was making the point that im not American. For the record, you call me anything you want….just don’t call me late for dinner. :)

      • Jennster

Why would a sovereign country like China bow to inferior YANKS? LOL

        • BigJ

I don’t know…tell us why you do it?

          • Aituo

Maybe you would like to run some cold water over that…….BURN!!

        • linette

Countries should be living in peace side by side. Peace for the world. Not war. Work hard to fight for a polllutional free and healthy environment for earth. Work hard toward the goal to achieve a nation free of social evils. Making it a safe and prosperous country for everyone not just the rich. :)

        • Getrealson

China is like a toilet! Shit, piss and spit everywhere and a foul smell that hovers over it like a fat guy with a gut full of Chile just shat on it. Inferior to most of the world and a big inferiority complex to go with it. Sadly some of the nicest people I ever met are stuck here.

I am not American but I have been there and loved it! Fucking awesome place! I will go back as often as possible yet I hope to never set foot in China again! American people are great (with the exception of idiots you find in every country). Canada too! Both America and Canada – I found myself there over Christmas, alone. An American family didn’t like that so invited me to Christmas dinner. I can’t tell you how great the people were. Best two months ever. Went to Canada the day after Christmas, Another family took me into their home for dinner.

          • Jennster

rather poor than bow down to a lower form culture :D

          • linette

Every race and country have their own culture. Really nothing good or bad about. It’s just different. I love many things in Chinese culture. It’s so awesome.

rather poor than bow down to a lower form culture…..
sounds like a China person who was born in a rich city like Shanghai. Definitely not a China Chinese who was born in poor rural areas and suffering from China segregation law.

          • mr. wiener

            Getrealson.
Jennster is actually a countryman of ours, but asian, hence the massive chip on his shoulder.
According to this logic he gets to be western, but without the guilt as he is also asian. Handy huh?

          • David.is.Dawei

            Curious to Know:
Do Australians and New Zealanders consider themselves to be Westerners?

            Thanks

          • David.is.Dawei

            “Jen”nster – you are a man or a woman?

Curious to know, who has the “lower form of culture” that you are writing about?

          • mr. wiener

We consider ourselves marsupials Dave. [eats , roots and leaves]

          • David.is.Dawei

You are a kangaroo? – interesting
plenty of storage in your pouch for knickknacks?

I know there is a connection with Britain (as there is with the USA), but I was curious to know if you thought of yourself as a “Westerner”?
or when you used the term “western”, did you have some other meaning?

          • mr. wiener

            Dave.
We consider ourselves “western” in the context of being a formerly Anglo-Celtic English speaking nation, now multi cultural and 1st world like the US or Canada.
Don’t touch my pouch unless you buy me a drink first.

          • David.is.Dawei

            Thanks for the feedback

HaHa – OK – I will be in Taipei in October. I’ll buy you a drink then.

            Cheers,

          • Jennster

im not a male. I just hate the YANKS. The Japanese may be evil but the one stirring the pot are the YANKS and I think all Chinese people should be aware of this. The inferior culture I was referring to was the YANKS not the Chinese.

          • David.is.Dawei

            Hi Jennster,

It hurts your credibility when you put all Yanks into a single category.

As long as humans have been around, it has always come down to who is the Alpha or the Big Boy on the Block, Darwinism, Eat or be eaten, whatever you want to call it.

Until the vision of “Star Trek” is realized and The Federation is formed in the future, I believe this is how things will continue to be. Hope, Change, Kind and Gentle doesn’t work in the real world. This is why wars have been fought and will continue to be fought (official and unofficial).

Why did the Japanese attack the USA (Pearl Harbor)?
Because the USA cut off its oil supply and left it with a 2 year reserve. They had to choose: A) Attack or B) capitulate.
They chose POORLY, but in the end, Japan’s future generations probably ended up better off.

You could list thousands of examples – even right now – Why are all of these secret wars being fought – stories of which will never make the papers?

The US government has been the biggest and baddest bully on the block for a while (a lot longer than we’ve been alive) – so I can understand why you would feel that way.

The USA has plenty of flaws; but no government is to ever be trusted. Despite these flaws, I would say most Americans are essentially good people and have been willing to sacrifice their sons and daughters for people we probably shouldn’t give a shit about.

I’d say that is one Freaking AWESOME Culture –

            Dave

          • mr. wiener

Jennster, you’re a woman? Holy shit you aren’t my ex gf are you? Shit a brick I thought that half baked trendy yank hating sounded familiar. Frances I never want to see you again…except on your facebook page…..You got faaaat!!

          • moop

“Don’t touch my pouch unless you buy me a drink first.” pfff, that’s not what i heard.

          • mr. wiener

            Shh! That’s just on weekends.

  • Slob

It bothers that in this article it mentions ‘Free food’ several times.

“This picture is of a girl getting free supper in the relocation site.”
“This picture is of people waiting to get the freely provided instant noodles”
“This picture is of a girl returning to her relief tent with free supper.”
“The free lunches and suppers provided by the government are very rich”
“This picture is of children getting their free dinner.”

Umm..you don’t refer to obligatory supplies as being ‘free’. This bullshit should be removed from the article.

“Here, sweety. Have a free fucking band-aid supplied graciously by your loving government. Don’t forget it’s FREE!!!!”

    • Slob

“Oh, sorry about your father getting crushed. Have some free noodles”

  • Cleo

All together, One at a time:

Japanese people are NOTHING like Chinese people!

    • Gontraf

I fail to see how that article is relevant to the statement you made. Also, looking at the pictures displayed below the article, I think it’s fair to say that you people look pretty much the same.
And I’m quite sure the Japs also got free instant noodles after their tsunami.

Maybe there is ground for mutual understanding after all.
