Netizens Scour High-Res Photo of ‘Two Sessions’, Mock Members

Netizens are gleefully scouring a high-res picture of China's Two Meetings to find "highlights" of members sleeping, playing games, and slacking off.

It’s that time of year again! China’s “Two Sessions” (of the National People’s Congress and Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference) are in full swing, with delegates traveling from around China to Beijing for two weeks of hardcore legislative action!!! sitting through boring proceedings.

Each year, netizens have made it a game to “participate” in the sessions by digging through media pictures for examples of “delegates behaving badly” but this year they’ve been provided with a new tool — an ultra-high res camera covering the entire proceedings.

Like an expert-mode round of “Where’s Waldo,” netizens have been using the camera as a spy satellite, scouring the photo of thousands of members in order to find “highlights.”

From Sina Weibo:

[Everyone search for highlights] NDDaily has launched their “Billion Pixels” CPPCC opening ceremony photo, you can zoom-in to your heart’s delight! Just like a spy satellite! Click here, find members you know, find members you’re interested in, find the highlights among these thousands of people in the People’s Great Hall! If you find a highlight, don’t forget to tag/forward!

why are there so few chinese netizen comments? Is the golden shield at work? Fauna, we have our fingers crossed for you!

    • Capt. WED

She’s tired and sick of this site probably.

Good. Maybe soon this site will die off completely. :)

    • Kong

Because this is Joel, not Fauna. He’s recently begun making an attempt at actually translating a couple netizen comments and posting links.

      I think it’s sweet.

      • Stu

Yeah, good work Joel! Netizen comments are always the best thing about Chinasmack…

        • Nyancat

he even linked the weibo accounts of the posters, hard working fellow, good show old chap.

      • Joe

Fauna is too busy with KoreaBang or whatever the fuck it’s called. Soon there’ll be one for every country, and she will also be sporting an ugly, $5,000 handbag purchased with her AdSense monies.

The model delegate in the last photo has discovered the career benefiting effects of a massive dose of botox taken whilst looking attentive

the effect should last through the whole conference

  • BlackSugarDaddy

    What a joke !

  • Slughead

It’s becoming more like a joke, us paying them taxes to sleep in the conference and dressed up as fancy as superstars. SHAME ON ALL OF THEM!

It reminds me of the 100′s of classrooms I’ve observed in the MK. 90% sleeping, looking at iPhone/Pad. 10% participating

Chinese students at my university would always come to lectures even when they didn’t listen to what the lecturer was saying. Those who would not listen, mostly played games on their laptops, which is destracting to those behind, as well as take up seats and contribute to the background noise/movement without getting anything out of the lecture.

At least the poor students of other nationalities would just not turn up.

  • donscarletti

Thanks for translating a few comments this time Joel!

    By the way,
    亿像素 = Hundred million pixels.
    Billion (short scale) = 十亿

I am guessing you did it to make it flow better, but there are some serious misunderstandings in China about what exactly a billion actually is, especially since a trillion lines up perfectly with 兆 and it leads to major problems. But then again, Chinese use 兆 to mean megabit/megabyte (instead of terabit/terabyte), so maybe it is endemic to the eastern mindset to treat large numbers with contempt.

    • Capt. WED
    • Kong

兆 can be used to mean “million”, “billion” (archaic), or “trillion”; It’s just a high number. Of course, the way it’s used in the mainland and in Taiwan/Japan is going to be different.

      • donscarletti

I didn’t mention Japan. In French un billion equals one trillion in English but nobody cares because it’s part of the language.

兆 on the other hand has only one meaning in modern Chinese (including Taiwanese mandarin): 一万亿, ten to the 12th, apart for that stupid megabyte thing, when it is ten to the 6th.

It is almost impossible to hire game programmers in China that when given two local to world matrix transforms, A and B can write out a condition which is true when B is is in front of A, i.e. the origin of B in A’s local space has a positive Z coordinate. God help you if you ask an applicant what a cross product is.

        • Kong

According to the extensive Baidu dictionary (and excluding non-numeral definitions), “兆” means:
          百万 (a million)
          It also lists 兆瓦 (megawatt)

          Baidu translates “trillion” as:
          百万兆 (i.e. a million millions)
          万亿

So, no, it doesn’t have only one meaning in modern Chinese. It appears to have two: ‘million’ and ‘trillion’. The only place I’ve seen it used for “trillion” is in Japan and Taiwan. On the mainland, I’ve only more often heard 太字节

this happens in the US and other countries as well, politicians are a bunch of lazy cunts in general…… there are always a few standouts either looking to make a name for themselves or really change something they believe in , but for the most part, a bunch of lazy cunts.

    hahaha

    It’s hilarious.

I think I’ve seen a couple of these things with Chinese delegates sleeping. Do our US reps do that or is it a Chinese thing?

    • moop

if they ever did it was before c-span. i don’t think they’d get away with it. the only time i know of it happening might have been senator byrd. but he was like in his 90s i think and that was probably the only reason he did get away with it

  • typingfromwork

This whole thing has always been a by the books charade of political ceremony. Hey, it’s important that the powers that be in China are at least SEEN to be doing something, even for just 2 weeks of the year.

Only that many people out of the whole lot are seen sleeping? Hey, it’s not bad. Even during the middle of the state of the union address some fucker senator decided to tweet how boring it is. The rest of these goons are very much attentive in their time wasting. Diligent, infact.

  • Xiongmao

    There are bored politicians everywhere.

HAHA they don’t have to pay attention to governing the country……they only have to go through the motions. Remember its not reality the Chinese are concerned with, its the facade.
