Police Fail to Talk Man Out Of Jumping Off Changsha Bridge

Many people are gathered around to watch.

Man in Changsha Jumps Off Bridge and Dies, Police and Crowd Unsuccessful in Persuading Him from Suicide

In the afternoon of July 13, at about 4:20pm, a man with a knife in his hand climbed onto the Xiangjiang No.1 Bridge in Changsha wanting to commit suicide, attracting a crowd of city residents, and causing heavy traffic congestion at the scene. After nearly 4 hours of fruitless efforts to persuade him to come down by the police and bystanders, the man ultimately jumped off Xiangjiang No.1 Bridge at about 8pm, dying 10 minutes later despite emergency rescue efforts. According to a bystander, the man felt cheated because he was unable to get a satisfactory amount of compensation over a traffic dispute, and then came up with the idea of suicide.

Pictures are of the afternoon of July 13, the man holding a knife having climbed onto the Xiangjiang No.1 Bridge in Changsha wanting to commit suicide.

腾讯镇江市网友 ZANE:

Four hours of persuading him came to nothing. Why was it that after four hours they still hadn’t deployed the cops and an air cushion under the bridge?

腾讯济南市网友 寶赑aiq荭:

Rest in peace, brother!!! If you’re not even afraid of death, why not kill the guy who conned you before you kill yourself? Or get some rat poison and send the whole staff of their company’s to heaven!! See if any other companies dare to con you in the future!!

腾讯海口市网友 四十独白:

The police didn’t do their duty. In the second picture, look at how relaxed those cops are standing there, as if it was none of their business. There’s even one of them who isn’t even wearing his hat, even riding on an electric bicycle, so close to the man so how can it be said there wasn’t a chance [to save the man]?? Besides, with 4 hours, there should’ve been some protective [backup] measures. Seems to me it’s the cops who didn’t do their job!!

腾讯网友 医生:

With this kind of person, even if you talk them down it’s useless. Who knows, they could even end up being a hidden danger to society.

腾讯网友 モナ拒否: (responding to above)

Everybody has impulsive or angry moments, and if our country offers even criminals another chance to reform and redeem themselves, should we really hit a person when they’re down and in a moment of impulse? What if one day when you’re angry, when you’re impulsive, when you’ve made a mistake there are people talking behind your back like this, how would you feel…the fickleness of the world! What more, he’s already dead, and yet people are talking about him like this. If his family were to see this, talk about making things worse. I hope everyone can be more understanding towards this poor man who has become a tragedy for a momentary impulse… after all, he was still a life.

腾讯泉州市网友 路人甲:

No background [connections/power/position] and still expect others to compensate you? If you’re going to die, you should at least pulled a few with you to break your fall [die with you].

腾讯网友 无线风筝卍卍:

Useless cops. Looking at the pictures, there were so many chances. From when he made the call, they could’ve all went over and dragged in him down.

腾讯台州市网友 加菲猫:

There was no water where he fell? Why after 4 hours did they not even have a life-saving air-cushion set up under the bridge!?

腾讯网友 猫.你是熊.熊:

40 years old and all for something that isn’t even that big. There have been people who have been cheated out of hundreds of thousands and millions and still don’t commit suicide.

腾讯贵港市网友 、Agony丶:

To commit suicide for such a minor/trivial thing, bro, it wasn’t worth it!

腾讯网友 来梦晴焰:

If he has a family, then he was being too selfish.

腾讯网友 仙人/mn掌:

I watched the live on-the-scene news broadcast, and that man didn’t jump at all but rather simply fell because he had run out of strength. You can tell he didn’t actually want to commit suicide but merely use this method to force the government to help him solve his problem. Four hours, the government departments had enough time to deploy safety measures, instead of just going through the motions of saying a few things to persuade him to come down just so they can say they did their duty! A grassroot ordinary commoner, your life is cheap like grass!!

    sofaaaaaaaaaaaa! [bad taste I know]

    • Lee

sofa? Is that supposed to be funny?
      you’re an idiot.

      • Nyancat

Are you new here? Lighten up.

        • Winter B4 Spring

          yes, Lee is new :D

        • Matt

Well, I’m not new here, and I still think mr. wiener is an idiot…

          • moop

then why dont you act like you’re not new here and look at wiener’s posts. he never calls sofa. he’s clearly making fun of people who do in such situations

          • mr. wiener

If it makes you happy I’ll admit to being an idiot for calling “sofa”. It is a kinda small thing to have a hissy fit over though don’tchathink?

          • Little Wolf

Well….I not new here and I think Mitt Romney is an idiot. But Louis CK is pretty fucking funny.

          • moop

louis ck is great, been hearing some shit about him becoming an asshole since his show has started and has become more famous though. i’m a big colin quinn fan. when he comes on opie and anthony and rips jim norton and everyone else its amazing. his one man show isnt bad either. directed and produced by seinfeld

          • Matt

“then why dont you act like you’re not new here and look at wiener’s posts. he never calls sofa. he’s clearly making fun of people who do in such situations”

I’m going to have to assume that’s a joke. Making fun of people who do something by doing exactly that same thing? And I suppose I can make fun of people who wear crocs by wearing crocs. Damn, that would be so hilarious!

Anyway, as to Mr. Wiener, it’s worth noting that up till now, Lee and I have each made only one short comment about this. I’m pretty sure that doesn’t qualify as a “hissy fit”. Granted, this is a second and lengthier comment, but I’m really only responding to responses. It would be uncouth of me to do otherwise…

          • Little Wolf

moop: I heard Louis will be coming to Shanghai. I imagine it will be a real hoot. (By “hoot” I mean a whole bunch of Chinese people wearing pokers faces while muttering “Huh?”)

          • Brett Hunan

Matt… I think it was more of a mockingesque tactic. Its kind of a tradition and people who take offense to this mockery should let it go… Also, if it was you who just posted on koreaBANG about your father being killed by Japanese Yukata, I thought it was hilarious… best to stick with the funny stuffs

          • Brett Hunan

Oh shit… I meant “your father was killed by a Yukata when he was a child”. Wow, big mistake on my part. That statement would only be funny if you add the “when he was a child” part…

          • mr. wiener

Methinks he [matt] doth protest too much.
            Was the “sofa” satirical ?
That is th’ crux o’ the matter. I’ll admit on seeing the story new and virginal a certain excitement arouse in me. As I fumbled at the keystrokes the ejeculation “sofaaaaa” left my lips [the drawn out ending aaaaaaa! intended to parody the unfortunate suicide’s short plunge to the ground].
Afterwards in shame a short apology was left. If it not please you , then I give not one wit.
If that makes me a fool, patch, idiot and poltroon then such am I. I’m a sausage maker, not f*cking Shakespeare after all.
Methinks I do protest too much so, I’ll anon.

        • Andy

That s0fa crap has been banned ! Or didn’t you know this ?

    • B*tches, Leave

Yet again I didn’t get the SOFA … I’ll jump off a bridge OOOOPS!!!

    • Jin

Mr Retard (wiener) are you 12? SERIOUSLY get over the SOFA thing because its not funny or clever.

      • Brett Hunan

Yea… because the adult thing to do is get angry and call someone a retard.

      • jin

        what brett said
calling someone retard cause of SOFA is a 12y olds doing.

        • Winter B4 Spring

          yes =.=

        • Winter B4 Spring

          Wait…no… =.=

        • Winter B4 Spring

          wait…far out…this is confusing…sigh…

          • Harbagery

Sofa is as funny as writing first. Just adapting unfunny chinese habits doesn’t make it funny.

  • Christina

    over a traffic dispute…

is life really worth so little?

    • Harland

It wasn’t a “traffic dispute”, it was compensation for what someone else did to him in a traffic accident. Secondly, the explanations for these by the media always come across as trivialized. They want to make the guy look like an idiot by barely explaining his side of the story, so they do. Seriously, read these types of stories – it’s always barely a sentence as to what happened to cause him to react in such an extreme manner. “Business dispute”…”divorce court settlement”…”argument”…while totally ignoring the fact that any of these could have wide-ranging and life-destroying outcomes.

      • Guang Xiang

There really is no context to the story. For all we know, he may be one of those guys who ran in front of motorists to get hit and ask for compensation. Feeling indignant for being short-changed, he instead opts for the brilliant idea of garnering more attention and sympathy, not knowing that he would eventually run out of strength holding on to that edge. This is to assume that one netizen was correct in saying the man simply ran out of strength and never intended to commit suicide.

        • Christina

          Agreed.

Harland- whatever you want to call it- traffic dispute or event with life-altering outcomes, the point is that he died for it. Permanently. It may have been life altering, but he threw away life itself. Whatever actually happened, there’s no way he can remedy it now.

          • Harland

He felt his life was already destroyed, otherwise he wouldn’t have gotten up on the bridge. Seriously, pay attention. There was ALREADY no way to remedy it.

    • Little Wolf

Christina: Did you see you were a character in the new Brett Hunan: Cyber-Sleuth? Girl Power!

      • Christina

LOL YES I did and I think it’s brilliant.

“Christina: Wow, I’m really glad we decided to have this Hawaiian slumber party. I’ve been studying so much lately. I just want to get wigged out. It’s gonna be epic.”

        – I’m pretty sure I said those exact same lines sometime right before I disappeared off chinaSMACK for 2 months.

        • Little Wolf

Christina: Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for being a good sport.

    • Nyancat

Maybe it was a culmination of things that brought him to this, it was probably the straw that broke the camels back, it’s a sad thing that this was his way out.

  • mr. wiener

I know suicide is considered a form of protest in Asia, but really what did it achieve?

    • Brett Hunan

look in the bright side… he will forever live in the chinaSMACK archives. he’s immortal now.

      • Tengu

        Always a silver lining…

Lot of metaphors in this story…poor bastard!

    • Little Wolf

(stomps) Qisi wo! I’m going to hold my breath til I get my way!

      • linette

I will watch you hold your breath and behave like 8yr old. In China no one cares. You won’t be getting any therapy. They will just take photos of you with their Iphone and post it on Chinasmack.

        • Tengu

…or stand around in a circle with hands behind their backs….musing..about what…who knows!

  • moop

so the award wasnt high enough so he decided to kill himself? next time my tax return seems a little low i guess i’ll find a bridge too

    • mr. wiener

Just don’t cause heavy traffic congestion when you do it.
4 hours is a long time.
Did it cause congestion because police shut down the traffic or because people stopped to rubberneck?

      • Winter B4 Spring

        i reckon it’s both o.O

    • Winter B4 Spring

true, 4 hours can really piss someone off, like in this old story:
      http://www.chinasmack.com/2009/more/suicide-jumper-pushed-off-bridge-by-old-man-passing-by.html

the old man literally pushed the suicidal dude off cos the old man was pissed off that the suicidal dude was not civic minded or something. i mean, wtf??!! (i meant it to the old man)

  • whiskersthecat

This is a man who hit rock bottom.
He’ll never get a big enough compensation now.

    • Snarl

He is visibly malnourished, his clothes are 100% shanzhai, and his hairline is receding prematurely. Maybe he hit rock bottom, or maybe he’s been there for a while.

  • Xuchen

    Pro-tip:

If you can’t handle the injustice of getting conned in a traffic dispute, you shouldn’t live in China. This kind of disgraceful thing is just an every day experience here.

    • mr. wiener

hmmm…I’m not sure living in China is a matter of choice for many.

    • mr. wiener

Actually in way he did take your sage advice….. He is no longer living in China.

      • Tengu

        Nice spin…

      • Winter B4 Spring

        …and spot on.

        • Tengu

Weinie is the word maven of ChinaSmack, in a dead heat with Sir Ginger Root, all due respect to others…

          • Tengu

            …and Shuman the Hunan!

  • Money, pah

  • markus

Im sure it had many reasons which lead him to this not just one

i agree with the 1st chinese comment

4 hours yet they didnt put any air cushions under the bridge?
WTF was the police doing, it seems like they didnt really care if he died or not..
even the people on the forum didnt care…

Why is it being in China most people start to lose that lack of care for other human beings.

    • slob

Probably because of the population…I mean look at India as well.

    • Capt. WED

They do it sometimes. I’m not sure why other times they don’t. We can guess right. Some places are shitty compared to “bigger” cities. I mean look at that place. Some situations are impossible. It’s a bridge. YOu seem to be an expert why don’t you tell us.

  • Castro

weird the way that Chinese commentor suggested killing other people because he did not get compensated.
some people are so cruel minded…

  • Jin

I don’t get people who draw attention to themselves when committing suicide if you really want to die you do it in private. So clearly this guy was just after attention if I would encourage him to jump.

There are so many people on this planet who wants to live so if you don’t then its better to go.

    • donscarletti

He wanted to die with attention and he got it.

Nobody lost their legs, so I figure it’s all worked out as well as could be hoped for.

Rest in peace, I hope in your next life you are born in England and can live out your life on disability benefit.

      • jin

born in NORTH england LOL!!!! and get beaten everyday

      • Jin

why are people saying its the police responsibility to talk him out of it? polices are not social workers and its not their job to be one. If he had a gun or knife and try to harm others then yes the police needs to be involved.

Its better for him to die anyway, as cruel as it is if i was him and my life is that horrible i would want to end it. So jin you should take note and end your life.

        • mr. wiener

I’m suddenly starting to like small case j better.

          • Jin

            good..who cares?

  • Sherry

If after 4 hours of talking, he still jumped, then is it worth criticising the police? I mean, that man was mightily determined to jump…

I suppose we can only blame the police for not putting something under the bridge to break is fall *roll-eye*

    • Dan

You just don’t get it do you? All the whiny liberals who ran away to China because they had no jobs need to find something to bitch and moan about or else they have to face up to what worthless wastes of skin they are.

      • Little Wolf

Are you Rush Limbaugh’s retarded fucking cousin or something? Cuz I’m one of them Tea Party bums. Oh, oooops. I meant Tea Baggers.

      • Anus Presley

Because University degree educated people who seek to enrich their experience of the World by moving to China for a few years should be labelled ‘worthless wastes of skin’, right?

Seriously pal, what a bitter, sad existence you must lead.

      • donscarletti

I love how American politics has totally transcended actual issues to be a matter of name calling between “liberals” and “teabaggers”.

Also, I love it how in America now, you can support removing 80 years of financial regulation and call yourself a “conservative”. And here I was believing that deregulation was pretty much the definition of classical liberalism. But that is beside the point.

You keep being conservative bro. Keep exposing those expats for the job needing liberals they are. Remember, an expatriate is an ex-patriot, the only patriotic way to travel overseas is in a Lockheed C-5 Galaxy to a forward operating base.

        • Little Wolf

To be honest, I’m not even sure what those terms mean or what Tea Partyers, liberals, conservatives even stand for. I’m just a surfer from Hawaii via California. What I can tell you is that if you got a 30 foot swell at 20 second intervals you’re looking at a whole lot of fun. That’s all I need to know.

          • mr. wiener

Liberal= There are too many surfers who don’t have the benefits of these waves, We need subsidized buses to bring bring the poor and the under priveliged to the beach as well as a tow hook system for disabled surfers to reach the waves , which have to be carefully regulated by taking a number at the back to ensure who gets what wave. On even numbered days disadvantaged ethnic groups, gay couples with children and the elderly get served before all other surfers.
We are looking at eventually fazing out surfing because of the dangers of surfing and its negative effects on the environment.
Conservative= People of the wrong ethnic group and negative cash flow stay away from my waves or you will be shot and or nuetured to stop you have more surfers. You people can surf on the shore break, but only on alternate Mondays in exchanged for food stamps or future options on donating your internal organs.

          • Little Wolf

I know that bridge, he could have walked out along it a bit further and had a longer drop to make sure of things.

    Anyway, 1.4 Billion -1.

  • Nanny Hiccups

why was medical not already there immediately and not just arriving after he fell.

i believe this man was just fed up and tired of life. he is covered in blood from cutting himself? Couldn’t read the whole article, must go to job.

American police would have shot him if all else failed, to get him down.

    • Tengu

“American police would have shot him if all else failed, to get him down.”

In what particular state have you actually seen police shoot a jumper?

  • Tom

It is very sad when anyone commits suicide. I cannot imagine how painful life must be for someone to kill himself. Also, I do not want to blame the police. They tried their best.

  • Anus Presley

If the guy really killed himself over some compensation for a traffic dispute, then he’s a fucking selfish asshole who had no appreciation of life.

So I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he probably had a lot more problems which led him to this.

    • Jin

By looking at him you clearly could see he is feed up with life. At least he didn’t go on a murdering range like most other feed up people.

  • Mark ,

Suicide is something we would all do from time to time. If we could come back when we feel better, but we can’t.
    Mark,

    • Winter B4 Spring

      o.O huh? wha…?

    • Winter B4 Spring

I disagree, yet i agree to disagree, which is something we would all do from time to time.

      Winter B4 Spring,

  • Getrealson

All those people standing on the stairs/platform up to the bridge looks like a second tradgedy in the making.

  • Cleo

That seems to be such a painful way to commit suicide – basically the ground and the bridge are beating you to death, right?

yeee…. and was he stabbing himself?

I’m surprised that Chinese don’t do what the Thais do which is just join a monastery so you are guaranteed two meals a day.

    • Me

Probably a good thing for the community that the crazy guy standing on the bridge stabbing himself didn’t come down. Up on that bridge he was just stabbing himself. With him dead we are now safe sitting in front of our warm computers.

  • stan

i actually live in changsha. and i have no idea why they didnt put out a safety cushion. there was a jumper on the main high street about a month before this and they put one out as a precaution. judging by the place he fell it doesnt look like there was space. or maybe with the knife he threatened to kill himself there and then if some kind of safety device was put up.

  • jobangsha

Police in Changsha (and elsewhere, but I just commenting from my experience as an expat in Changsha) are a waste of space. All corrupted with bad attitudes and no respect for human decency. A friend recently was attacked in this city with a knife by someone, only to be told he had to pay the police off to prevent him doing it again! The legacy of Lei Feng has received a massive kick in the balls here

    • Me

Lei Feng wasn’t real. That was just Communist propaganda. His Diary was just made up bullshit. Looking to the past for examples of decency when lamenting China’s current lack of morality is false thinking. The sad truth is that as deplorable as the current society here is , it is much much better than it has ever been.

  • That’s quite a crowd that came to watch! I wonder if they cheered him on and clapped when he landed?

    • procrastinatoroftheuniverse

in a situation like that, you don’t know what else to do. you don’t feel excitement or glee; rather you feel so damn powerless and you can’t quite comprehending what you are seeing. your brain just shuts down and you can do nothing but stare gobsmacked. you pity the person and at the same time you wonder why no one just leaps and grabs them but then you realize that’s a pretty dumb idea as well…so yeah, you just feel so useless but you don’t know what else to do with yourself. i guess maybe you want to show them some kind of “solidarity” by staying with them and trying to let them know that they don’t need to kill themselves, that they can get help; that you care somewhat despite being a stranger…at least you care enough that you don’t want them to die.
