Premature Baby Girl Abandoned in Trash Can, Throat Cut
On June 23, an old scavenger found a premature-born baby girl while digging in a trashcan in front of a residential building on Yingshan Road, Anshan City, Liaoning Province. The baby girl’s throat was cut, deep into her windpipe, and was abandoned with the placenta wrapped in a plastic bag. When she was found, her skin had turned bluish and purpleish due to an oxygen deficit. After emergency treatment, the baby survived. The local are already involved.
Doctor Li Haiyan and Doctor Wu Ping of Anshan’s Central Hospital performed surgery on the baby. There was a 5-centimeter-long cut deep to the cartilage of her windpipe. “The cartilage had been cut through and the cut was almost as deep as the mucous membrane.” Doctor Wuping said, “The baby’s neck was almost cut half way through, and if it went half a centimeter deeper, she wouldn’t have survived.” The wound was clean and neat, likely from a knife, and extremely likely to have been done by a person. A scar will accompany the child for the rest of her life.
According to Doctor Li Haiyan, the baby girl was born premature, approximately 32-34 weeks old, weighing 1.4 kilograms. “She didn’t cry until we gave her the anesthetic shot. Except for the cut, she doesn’t have any other health problems, and her heart and lungs were also okay.” Li Haiyan also said that the baby is extremely lucky, having survived a premature birth, oxygen deficit, and such a wound, three potentially fatal circumstances. However, even after the surgery, a period of observation will still be necessary to make sure there aren’t any other problems with her brain and other organs.
At about 4pm the same day, this reporter contacted Doctor Li, who said that the baby was in stable condition but was unable to drink milk and was receiving a glucose IV for nutrition. Workers from the local community committee said they will send the baby to a children’s welfare institution/orphanage after she is discharged from the hospital.
Local residents identified the trashcan where the baby was found. The plastic bag that once served as her “shelter”, was left in a huge rain puddle by the trashcan. The black plastic bag had blood on it, and some flies flew around it.
