Rare Chinese White Dolphin Saved From Dirty Guangdong River

A wild Chinese white dolphin in a dirty Guangdong river attracted a crowd of thousands as conservation workers mounted a rescue operation.

On March 12th a wild Chinese white dolphin was spotted in Nanhai River in Foshan, Guangdong. Due to their relative rarity in the wild, a crowd of thousands soon appeared on the riverbanks to watch conservation workers mount a rescue operation to relocate the animal to a nature preserve.

According to the local marine wildlife branch, Chinese white dolphins are a rare visitor to that area of the Pearl Delta, but sightings were not unheard of. However, previously two visitors were already dead when found and one other died during rescue.

Chinese white dolphins are native to the Pearl Delta region, as well as greater Southeast Asia. When born, the species is black, and gradually turns white as it matures to adulthood. Chinese white dolphins living along China’s coast commonly have pink skin.

The adult found in Nanhai River measured two meters (6.5 ft) in length and weighed 150 kilograms (330 lbs). It was taken to the Pearl River Delta Chinese White Dolphin National Wildlife Preserve.

As Foshan is where the young girl Yueyue was struck by 2 vehicles and ignored by 18 passersby before eventually succumbing to her injuries, netizens are once again quarreling over the topic of morality, comparing Foshanese’s readiness to save the dolphin to their seeming indifference to the plight of a young injured toddler.

This dolphin must have evolved, to still be alive in that extremely filthy water.

Foshan people still know how to protect wildlife, and aren’t trying to grab their own white fin? Really amazing!

fky250 [网易广东省佛山市顺德区网友]:

Hasn’t been eaten? Really lucky.

米国移民局长 [网易美国网友]:

People drowning, getting hit by cars, and others just stand with their arms crossed, not batting an eyelid. One fish falls into trouble, and everyone comes to help.

网易亚太地区网友:

Yesterday was Arbor Day, and there are still people climbing on trees to get a good look!

How many of those spectators were wondering what it tastes like?

    • Dr. Dust Cell

      I am… Aren’t you?

Be honest. If it weren’t endangered, it would probably be a regular dish due to the amount of meat per catch.

    • lonetrey

      hah, I’m not curious.

I just assume everything tastes like chicken.

      The Matrix got lazy.

      • snicker

        Probably like chicken fins

The filthy water proves that humans are nothing but a virus plaguing and destroying the planet. And that is strange, that people would ignore a child but scurry to save a fish. But perhaps there are scientists involved in the fish issue. People seem to do what they always do, which is watch, doing little else?

    sofa?

      >dolphin
      >fish

      2/10 would not read again.

      • donscarletti

I’m going to say the combination of decrying humanity as the scourge of the planet, then running straight towards the sofa did it for me.

    • Bruce Tutty

Hey, it isn’t humans that polluted this, just the ones using this river.

And the Earth’s average person does not ‘ignore a child but scurry to save a fish’, they try to save both.

If you are talking about China then ok, but you will need to see the rest of the world if you want to talk like this about all of us, or display your ignorance.

    • mr. wiener

I’ ve always wondered at the way people who spout “Gia theory” seem to think that some how more enlightened individuals [not virus] as against the rest of us human scum [virus] ,who deserved to be wiped out.
Hongjian uses a similar argument in most of her posts.

山炮 I believe is just some obscure Dongbei term for “idiot”. Maybe you’re thinking 打炮? Even that can just mean to open fire with artillery.

          • moop

i’m pretty sure 鸡巴先生 is talking about chinkicide, not 山炮

I thought they’d already gone extinct. That dolphin is one resilient fucker to be swimming in that filth. Good thing it got rescued.

Kudos on the rescue team as well. It’s always good to hear stories like this.

“The cycle of harmony goes ever on.”

Wow, that’s up there with: “Go peacefully. It’s following government’s orders,” as said by the mother to her hysterical son, prior to him being plugged and organ harvested, on ‘Interviews Before Execution’.

As an aside, the fast trains between Nanjing/Shanghai are now: ‘Welcome to Harmony,’ yet another wtf moment.

I request stories about cute activist chicks helping dolphins.

      • Shylock

I think he was being sarcastic!

Yeah, I know. I wasn’t trolling. I actually liked the way the expression was used in its piss take sorta way.

  • matt

I can’t believe I know this, but “Chinese white dolphin” (中華白海豚) is actually a different type of dolphin. The article’s dolphin is commonly called Baiji (白鱀豚) in English.

But yeah, both are (a) white and (b) found in China so who knows what’s the right translation.

      nevermind, I am an idiot.

      • Dat Ankle

The important thing is that you tried.

    • typingfromwork

Thanks for the links, I was wondering if this was an example of the river dolphin that was declared extinct several years ago.

The loss of the Baiji is a true tragedy. Do not let the white dolphin follow their fate.

    • Mikecheck

Matt, my NGO works with these dolphins and the one in this story is definately a Chinese white dolphin not a baiji. Baiji are sadly extinct.

such a beautiful animal in the middle of such a filthyness ….

  • 山炮 ShanPao

I remember when I saw a dead body in the river in Chengde. The scene was pretty much the same, people standing round watching and taking photos.

Turns out the poor old man was fishing when he fell in a couldnt swim. No dignity for him then… gis us a look!

  • http://www.proxyforchina.com/ Rod

I’m betting it gets eaten. I know a guy who ate a tiger. I mean, not the whole thing, but you get the point.

  • Brett Hunan

Anyone ever been to a zoo in China? I mean, c’mon… Only instead of killing the poor thing, they can make money on it while alive and sell the meat off after the dolphin dies “naturally”.

Who wears green uniforms in China? Is it the PLA or police force?

Soon crowds like this will gather in China when someone spots a real living bird in a tree!

  • Andy

That fucker ended up in White Dolphin soup for sure !

  • http://www.facebook.com/gigibeanx Gina

No wonder one of the dolphins ‘died during rescue’.. Theres photos showing people taking them out of the water.. and putting them on to a blanket.. without water. Are you serious.. LEAVE THE THING ALONE. It survived in those waters up until then, why disturb it? ..My god. I feel like some rich asshole is eating white dolphin meat currently as we speak.
