Taiwanese Pig Farmers Protest American Beef Imports

Thousands of Taiwanese farmers protest imports of beef with leanness enhancing additive

March 8th, thousands of Taiwanese farmers on the streets protested authorities releasing imported beef from America containing a leanness enhancing additive. March 5th, Taiwan’s “Executive Yuan” approved with conditions the opening of imported beef from the United States containing leanness enhancing additives (ractopamine).

[Above] Thousands of Taiwanese pig farmers unhappy with authorities releasing imported beef from America containing a leanness enhancing additive, continuously went on the streets of Taipei to protest.

According to reports, on March 5th, Taiwan’s “Executive Yuan” reached a decision on the controversial issue of whether or not American beef containing leanness enhancing additives should be allowed to be imported, conditionally allowing the import of American beef containing ractopamine.

Ractopamine (trade name: Paylean), is a new type of leanness enhancing additive, able to promote the amount of lean meat in animals, reduce the amount of feed required, bring meat products to market earlier, and lower costs. However, when large amounts of meat products containing ractopamine are consumed, it can cause symptoms of poisoning such as nausea, dizziness, muscle spasms, palpitations, increased blood pressure, increase cardiovascular disease, etc.

Ractopamine when compared to other leanness enhancing additives is relatively less toxic and is more quickly metabolized. As such, it is allowed to be added to feed in the United States and a minority of other countries. At present, America and 24 other countries in the world openly allowing Paylean while 160 other countries still prohibit it.

The outside world believes that Ma Ying-jeou ultimately deciding to conditionally open imports of American beef containing the leanness enhancing additive, in the face of vocal domestic opposition on the Taiwan island, is related to repeated pressure from the United States, connected with the breakdown of Taiwan-America Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) talks over American cattle, ultimately forced to open [to imports] due to Taiwanese authorities urgently desiring visa-free US travel treatment as well as American support for entering the Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership (TPP) and other factors.

However, in Taiwan’s “Legislative Yuan”, other than the opposition party standing opposition, many KMT members also made clear their disapproval. Photo is of Taiwanese farmers throwing chicken eggs and pig excrement at the “Council of Agriculture”.

Taiwanese farmers on the streets protested authorities releasing imported beef from America containing a leanness enhancing additive??? Why would those raising pigs oppose beef…what about those raising cows?

网易台湾省台北市网友: (responding to above)

Because Taiwanese domestic beef production is little and expensive. Taiwanese beef production has always been unable to meet demand so there’s limited impact to them. However, the moment large quantities of cheap American beef are imported, pork and beef prices will both fall, as greater choice during meat purchases will naturally affect pork sales!

Import American beef? They’re crazy. American, European, New Zealand beef, I don’t know how they’re raised, but the flavor of their beef is all terrible, with a strong gamey flavor, the color of the meat so red its unnatural, its probably only suitable for making Western-style food. At least the imported beef sold here in Japan, when prepared Chinese-style, no matter how always tastes bad.

I agree with the protesters, these additives are not welcome in my food.I want good wholesome food not something riddled with chemicals just to make the producer richer.

    • Xenon

      Totally agree with above comment

    • mr. wiener

      Robin
Not quite as clear cut as that . Taiwan already uses many of these chemicals in it’s meat production. The DPP is using the Issue of American beef imports to fuck with the goverment. Which is not having a good week because it came out that they discovered H1N1 bird flu in chickens as long ago as december last year and did nothing about it because they “did’nt want to cause a panic” Duh!
The yanks are being silly buggers because they are tying the issue of beef imports as conditional to Taianese getting visas. So it’s aright old fuckup everywhere at the moment.

      • robin yates

thanks for your comment, but America seems to think it is ok exporting stuff that their own cannot get,.

The farmers are pissed because the Americans are playing silly buggers about letting beef into Taiwan.[making it conditional for Taiwanes to get visas to the states] The DDP are also using this as a politicaL football to kick President Ma with. It’s the farmers who are paying for it as pork prices have dropped

        • KMT

ROChina (Taiwanese) maps actually show a bigger China than the PRC’s. They include the country of Mongolia and parts of FE Russia which the CCP signed away in treaties.

          • Jess

The ROC recognised an independent Outer Mongolia in the Sino-Soviet Treaty of Friendship and Alliance in 1945. After retreating to Taiwan, the ROC reasserted its claim to Mongolia and vetoed its inclusion into the United Nations, until the USSR threatened to block all the new African states’ entry into the UN.

Jess, I stand corrected. Thank you.

why do PIG farmers protest against BEEF from the us ?

    • KMT

Typically, beef costs more than pork. Lower beef prices would force down the price of pork and hence lower income for pork farmers.

      • Dr. Dust Cell

Exactly. Why eat pork when you can eat beef for almost the same price?

        • mr. weiner

Many Taiwanese prefer pork and a largish minority don’t eat eat beef as it is disrespectful to a useful animal [the ox].
That said lower prices would suck for the pork farmers. [not for me though:)]

          • donscarletti

I had a colleague explain it like this:
In the west, the dog traditionally worked hard to round up sheep and cattle and kill foxes, whereas the cattle just sits around and eats all day. Thus westerners do not like to eat dog.
In China, the ox traditionally worked hard to plow the field and the cow could pull a cart whereas the dog sits around and eats all day. Thus Chinese do not like to eat beef.

      • Ryo

And here I thought they were worry about the effects on thier health of said beef but all they worry about is profit…

        • KMT

A wise old American taught me a phrase “follow the money”; assume that profit (current, future, trade offs etc.) is the basis of all actions, apply it to all parties involved and one will understand world economy and politics.

      • KMT

Above and this comment are directed at Mr. Xu. Further clarification, the countries you mentioned do not recognize Taiwan as a country. All these countries you mentioned along with the majority in the UN support a One China policy which includes the Taiwan province.

        • http://www.wtchina.freeforums.org Elijah

As you mentioned above: Follow the money.

Pre-1972, how many supported that ridiculous policy? Taiwanese sovereignity was thrown under the bus based purely on economic greed.

Also, having china on the Security Council makes rational discussion about the reality of Taiwan impossible.

This argument is old though and the only thing people can say against it is that the UN or some country doesn’t accept Taiwan as an independent nation, despite the overwhelming proof of it’s reality and the simple reasoning pointed out above: greed and Security Council pressure.

          • donscarletti

Firstly, pre-1972, nobody questioned one China policy, especially not the KMT government of Taiwan. The revolution was a recent memory to the world (23 years earlier) and everyone assumed things would go back to normality in one way or the other during the course of the cold war.

Secondly, China was always a permanent member of the security council, because it was on the winning side of WWII. This did not prevent the issue of RoC representing China being resolved because legitimacy of states is purely an issue for the general assembly, not the security council.

          • http://www.wtchina.freeforums.org Elijah

            You missed the point.

Pre-1972, Taiwan held the UN Security Council seat and was recognized as China (ROC).

It was only because of the huge population (ie: extremely cheap and massive labour pool) in china and Henry “Kiss-ass” Kissinger that the seat was given to china (prc).

As for the Taiwanese version of the One China Policy, many Taiwanese people believe that since the legitimate government of China moved to Taipei, that makes Taipei and the Taiwanese government rulers of all China, vis a vis china belongs to Taiwan.

Lastly, I think you’re forgetting the extremely important fact of what’s granted to all security council members: veto power.

          • mr. wiener

…except I think Chiang Kai Shek was silly enough to with draw Taiwan [or ROC] from the UN in protest at the UN and others recognising “Red China”, Making the ROC’s supposed legitimacy as the gov of China a moot point.
Oh, and Taiwanese pork is very good.

          • Alan

          • donscarletti

Veto power for Security Council resolutions, not General Assembly resolutions.

Also, the Beijing government rightfully represents China because it controls China. From the Chinese traditional perspective, you may well claim that the CPC currently holds the 天命, or “mandate of heaven”, simply because it has the ability to assert its dominion on all the provinces bar one. If you start talking about legitimacy in terms of the western concept of “Divine Right of Kings” instead you may well say the rightful ruler is a man called Jin Youzhi (Puren), current heir to the throne of the Great Qing.

          • A GUY

            Good old mandate of heaven.

Well he’s got the gun so I think he’s in power.

You quote the wrong source for western powers by the way.
In the west we flush our old turds of concepts like divine right. Maybe China should do the same.

What does Jeremy Lin got to do with it? There a sign that says Linsanity! hahaha

Oh another note, there’s another way to protest… It’s called boycott! Just don’t buy said beef/pork and they’ll have to stop selling eventually.

    • gobbo

One of the characters in the Chinese name of Paylean (培林) is the same as the Lin in Jeremy Lin’s Chinese name (林書豪). I guess they figure President Ma has the wrong kind of Linsanity.

Also, there have been pushes for a boycott for a few years now. You go to many restaurants here and they’ll either make a point of saying that they only serve beef from the Aussies or the Kiwis, or they’ll have a picture of a US flag shaped like a cow with a big, red X through it. It’s old news. Most don’t care too much until some politician thinks they can score points and calls the media. It’s mostly money and politics rather than genuine public outcry.

AIT helped Ma’s reelection push by announcing the possibility of a visa-free travel deal just before the vote, and now they’re bringing it up again as a way of forcing him to accept the imports when he would rather just forget it.

  • Peye

IT seems that in TAIWAN everyone has something to BEEF about nothing. The pig farmers are so hard up that they can buy $ 2 Mil.+ houses in Canada and have their kids tool around in BMW’s .living high on the hog.

  • Jerome

Farmers who protest are absolutely right, the United States allows the use of hormones for livestock is the main reason why the import of U.S. beef is banned here in Europe. All states have different regulations on industrial methods of farming and none is perfect. We do not forget what Gandhi said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”

  • Peye

MR. Gandi was a wise man. So let’s take a closer look how the pigs are treated in Taiwan. Also what about the dogs and cats that are served as special treats at mealtime in some places. And then is still the issue of using parts of certain aninals for traditional medical applications. Conclusion : There are quite a few places on this planet that are not so great by Mr Gandi standards. But when it comes to money anything goes.(including acting like fools, throwing eggs and so on) . A fact easily overlooked. Oh. not to forget how humans are treating eachother for the same reason, MONEY.

  • http://www.proxyforchina.com/ Rod

“Taiwanese authorities urgently desiring visa-free US travel treatment as well as American support”

    Figures.

But it’s still unclear to me whether the farmers are protesting the American import because it’s competition for them, or because of the health risks of the additive.

  • andywattbulb

I doubt they care about the additives. It’s more about being outsourced and losing your job.

          • Hongjian

Because american ‘innocent people’ are directly responsible for the wars and murders committed by their democratic state.
Or do you want to imply that the americunts have no democracy, and that the people do not have any say or power to affect how their leaders shit up the world? Either you are all innocent and enslaved by your oppressive illegitimate govt. or al of you are supporting this shit openly in the elections and by abstention. There’s no ‘innocent americunt’ as it would be a horrible oxymoron, ignoring the facts following:

Living first world standard in wastefulness, luxury and abundance can only be accomplished by robbing the rest of the world, just like how the US does on every level, be it economic, fincancial, military or poitical. May it by printing USD like mad, exploiting its standign as leading currency by making the rest of the world pay for your debts, or be it the US financed rebellions and civil wars around the world for the sake of furthering the US dominance – there’s not a single instance where your wealth and freedoms werent coming from the deaths and exploitation of other people.
Innocence my ass. The fact alone that an americunt has the money to be on the internet to spout his shit, is evidence enough of his guilt of having benefitted from his country’s imperialism.

America is a cancer that is killing the world. And only radiation will cure it.

          • A GUY

Notorious your response to that shouldn’t be an agreement that the US is murdering families. You can agree that the war may have been ill advised, but don’t try and just let his assertion that it was part of a twisted American plot for stealing Afghanistani wealth slide. The US went in there for noble reasons no matter how misguided you may think it was.

          • A GUY

Yes that’s exactly what American soldiers are trained to do, kill families. That’s why when before they go to war they all get training on how to kill whole families, not explicit and complicated instructions on how to minimize civilian casualties that increases risk to themselves. I’d like to see what China would do if Pakistan destabilized and the nukes ended up in the hands of East turkmenistani rebels. I imagine that response might be a-lot more similar to the killing of whole families that you imagine.

How did you get onto the internet????

            Ahh I missed you HONGJIAN.

          • Hongjian

There was not a single war not being fought for ‘noble reasons’.
This is what americunts, who evidently lack culture and deep historical experiences, should learn quickly. No nation or warlord will start a war and invade another for the sake of spreading evil, but aways to do good. Even that Kony guy is doing it for the sakes of christian values and the ten commandements.
Americunts, devoid of any mind and with an attention span of a fucking fish, just keeps spouting HURR FRREEEEDUM AND DEMOCRACY IM COMMING!!! while raping little girls and shoot them in the face before bathing and burning them with gasoline. This shouting doesnt prove shit about your ‘noble intentions’. Your real, empirically measurable actions do.

And regarding Pakistan; China would just let the Pakistani govt. deal with the issue. Every state should and is only allowed to kill her own people. China must let Pakistan sort their shit out, which she does.
And also, implying that the East Turkestan bullshitters arent all american CIA/NED supported rebels. If they blow up a nuke in Beijing, China will retailiate not on Pakistan, but on America, nuking Washington in return.

          • mr. weiner

Ahhh.. a hongjian rant is internet high fibre fodder.
You are of course right HJ, America will shrink it’s sphere of influence back across the atlantic as it’s industries collapse and its culture festers. Undoubtable a Kardasian will be elected some time in the future.
The third world and the muslims will cheer and make the funny noise in the back of their throats as there is no superpower left to oppress them……..but wait a tick. China will be the only superpower left?!….Oh well never mind ,I’m sure the Chinese would never dream of interfering in someone else country, especially as they are right on the same continent as them….and as to the religious problems, gosh china is very respectful of other peoples religions, why there are so many muslims in china already. How far off the mark am I?

Taiwan bro, we just wanna outsource your meat production to the impoverished nation of ‘Murica because they have cheaper and more efficient facilities and their farmers are willing to work more for less pay.

    U MAD?

If Taiwan were a province of China, then China would protect Taiwan from poison beef.

However, this article proves the opposite.

And If America is defending Taiwan’s freedoms and wellbeing, it wouldnt force its shitty beef that is even banned in much of Europe into its throats.

However, this article proves the opposite.

The American’s probably eat it themselves all the time. In the end it’s probably not a big fucking deal.

Ahh. Its good to hear from you.

Copycat thinking is what they teach at the university level today in China.

        • Hongjian

          Not very different in Taiwan.

I have yet to see a Taiwanese doing anything more than western accepted plagiatism, just as they practiced nothing more than western accepted dictatorship for decades.
I have family there working in the Taipei University. And they say it themselves all the time.

ROC would be as much loathed by the west, if they had the control over the mainland and challenged the western global domination by just being independent of their pressure. Luckily for them, they are still useful as tools of containment, so every shit they do will gracefully be glanced over until they lose their usefulness.

To the extent that those mainland trash like President Ma are in control in Taiwan, Taiwan will continue to have stupid problems like this.
