7-Month Pregnant Woman Forced Into Labor to Abort Unborn Baby

From ifeng & NetEase:

Shaanxi Zhenping County Family Planning Bureau forcibly aborts woman’s 7-month-old fetus

Recently, a forum post said that the Government of Zengjia Town, Zhenping County, Ankang City, Shaanxi Province illegally took a 7-month-pregnant woman into custody, and forcibly induced labor in order to abort her unborn child. The pregnant woman, Feng Jianmei from Ankang City, was unable to pay the fine of 40,000 RMB for breaking the One-Child Policy, and was illegally taken into custody by the local town government, and forced to abort her baby. At 3:00 am June 4th, 36 hours after Feng Jianmei was compelled to accept a labor inducing injection, the dead fetus was taken out of her abdomen. The 7-month fetus was almost fully developed. A week later, photos of Feng Jianmei and her dead fetus were uploaded onto the internet, causing a controversy. Without notifying the family, induced labor was forced upon the unborn child. With regards to this, the Population and Family Planning Bureau of Zhenping County responded on its official website saying that the woman’s pregnancy does not conform to the [One-Child] Policy; however, after repeated persuasion by the county government cadres, the pregnant woman finally agreed to terminate the pregnancy and received the pregnancy termination procedure at 3:40 pm, June 2nd.

Feng Jianmei told the reporter that because she could not afford the fine of 40,000 RMB for having a second child, at 9:00 am on June 2nd, she was escorted to a hospital by about 20 to 30 county government employees and at 3:00 pm that day was injected with “poisonous drugs” to induce labor.

She was violently treated on the way to the hospital because she continued to resist and when she was at the hospital, no family members were present to be with her. According to Feng Jianmei, on May 29th, Deng Jiyuan [Feng Jianmei’s husband] had left home and was on his way to Inner Mongolia. On May 30th, the county government began sending people over, in four-man four-hour shifts, to guard her. On June 1st, using the excuse of “going grocery shopping”, she escaped to Deng Jiyuan’s aunt’s place to go into hiding, but was ultimately found later that same evening. The county government employees then used bricks to block the door to prevent her from escaping. The next morning, they escorted her to the hospital.

A 7-and-half-month-old fetus can totally survive. My daughter was born when she was six months and a half. She is now 4 years old, healthy, smart, just a little bit shorter than children of her age. But doctors say she will catch up her height with other children of her age when she is older than 10.

  • Kirstia

Does anyone here still care about the facts of the story? you know the ones that aren’t written here…for example:

she’s eligible to have the kids without fine after 5 years, a policy that only opens to rural ‘hukou’; in which all she had to do is to change her urban ‘hukou’ to a rural one?

    OR

the fact that the committee knew about her pregnancy since the first trimester and has been telling her to change her hukou so the fine will be returned?

    OR

the fact that the family already has a 60,000 RMB debt borrowed from friends for the house they built and that the baby is a girl? (bu-jie-shi..)

So…it’s forced..but these facts sure makes the situation more ‘complicated’ doesn’t it?

To be honest, I think A) she didn’t get an abortion earlier knowingly that it was against policy. B)didn’t want to come up with the money or change her ‘hukou’. C)would she pay the fine or change her hukou had she known it was a baby boy?

and if any of the above above might be true, what would you do? keep the baby girl and wait another 5 years to get another chance of having a baby boy OR prepare another 40K to have a third child when the total family income is 4000RMB/month..? cruel as it sounds (or as I may sound), it is hard reality they have to face waking up everyday.

But then again, I can’t prove what really happened. But there is something I know: if she can’t even come up with 40K for her own flesh and blood; knowing the policy but still kept the baby, then there’s no guarantee for the baby’s ‘human right’ after she’s born. There’s a reason why most of the abandoned baby in China are girls.

And please leave the rich out of it, yes they might have dirty money, yes they take advantage of policy; but at least, they can support their kids with education and a future for the next 24 years which isn’t exactly what morally and loving parents suppose to do?

  • whiskersthecat

Good god, why did they put it on the bed next to her? I don’t have any jokes for this one.

    • Kirstia

she said she wanted to see the baby before they took her to be buried, then the sister took a photo of it and uploaded to weibo.

It just makes me sad to think of how much pain and how scared that little one was…..babies are so snug and safe in the womb and are learning about the world thru sounds and then to be essentially burned alive and no one to love u or stop it….and yes, babies do cry in utero. Poor babe….I look at my own 10 wk old daughter and it just makes me wanna cry. I don’t care whose fault it is, the baby didn’t deserve to be burned alive with saline……

China shame on you. The world is watching you. You need to find another way to control population. Not like this. Not forced abortion!

    • Frank Zappa

well, you suggested forced permanent sterilization… doesn’t sound so human as well.

      • linette

        Frank Zappa

I said forced permanent sterilzation IF NECESSARY. Unfortunately many knows the law and still breaking it. Some wants boy and throw girl into the river and will just keep on trying. They don’t care. It depends on the situation. But yes, forced PS if necessary. I rather do that than forced abortion. Enforce prevention not abortion.

IT’s all BS. This one child policy is BS. It’s falling apart because some are allowed to have more than one kid and some not. It will not work like this. If they really want the OCP to work. It must be one policy. OCP for everyone.

        • The Enlightened One

I have to agree with Linette,

There is a HUGE difference between prevention and dealing with the mess afterwards. If people prove to be irresponsible then these people deserve forced sterilization.

    • An anonymous boy…

It is very much real, but they have little power in China. They are just trying to bring awareness to issues regarding forced abortions etc mostly.

They have many cases of such things happening with similar pictures to this story that were brought before a US congressional commission:

      • The Enlightened One

        Absolutely Incredible!

EVERYONE should read that document. I thought these sort of actions were in the past. In twenty-years they have help prevented 300 million babies (many of which killed AFTER birth), quite a few people dying during these forced procedures.

Quite frankly, I am appalled that the global community would even entertain the idea of making China a world leader. These sort of actions are reminiscent of Nazi Germany or feudal Japan during World War II. The difference being… it is your OWN people.

Seriously, READ IT! A lot of the stories are first hand or second hand interactions.

    • The Enlightened One

      Wow, just wow.

China can never earn the respect of the world (if it indeed does care to obtain it) with these sort of policies. First of all, it is having a huge amount of trouble trying to dictate their borders with surrounding countries in a civil manner. Secondly, human rights doesn’t exist in China and is becoming more and more evident.

Westerners love to be indignant about stuff like this. After all the picture is clear, but few ever offer any solutions except for condemnation. The West have colonized three continent. Over population in Europe can be spilled into Canada, US, and Australia, where they favors European over us “darkies”.

China has a population of 1.3 billions, if there no population control, where will they put their population. Unfortunate they don’t have the upper hand and technology to colonize Africa and Australia yet, so they can alleviate their over population.

I guess for people like us living in the West, we are truly the fortunate one.

Obviously this wrong as the local official was punish. So I know a lot the anti-Chinese racism comes from deep seated racial superiority of whites.

If the Chinese suffered from famine, you would pity them and still do nothing. So what is a Chinese government to do. If you are so kind, you would have an open border policy and let Wyoming be populated with a little Chinese population or Wester Australia.

    • mr. wiener

Nothing wrong with “Darkies”. Come to Australia and we’ll call you an “Aussies” instead. [we're still far from perfect, but much better than the charming racist we used to be].
I’m not indignant about China’s family planning. I’m FUCKING indignant about the aformentioned abortion of an abortion and hope the people involved are punished.
People with skills are welcome to emigrate to Oz , but we have to manage the resources we have too. I can’t see us throwing open the borders to Western Australia anytime soon as:
#1. We are busy digging up WA and selling it by the cubic tonne to the Chinese anyway.
#2. I don’t think new migrants would be interested in living in the middle of the Great Sandy Desert [imaginetively named] or the gibber plains of the Simpson desert.
China’s problems will get China’s solutions. Ultimately you they don’t have to worry about what westerners think, they’ll have to worry about what their own citizens think. This has been a less than good advertisement for family planning don’tchathink?

There is plenty of land on earth that isn’t being used. I have personally met many laowai teachers and most wont even get pass a interview at a university back in their own country.

And you’re upset that others are making generalizations? You know, it really sucks when you try to respect everyone’s opinions, stay out of the firing range, and someone still, unwittingly takes a shot at you.

There’s a story behind why I’m an English teacher in China. The short version is (after completing university, had to add that) through my mid twenties and early thirties worked my rear end off and was getting nothing out of life, nor did I really feel that my life was benefiting anyone, other than my own financial gain. My grandfather told me, the two most important things in work are a) you love your job b) you feel your doing something useful. Teaching English in China does that for me, except when people ask me “What do you do?” Usually I try to make it sound flashy. “I’m in the education industry.” LOL

Anyways. I’m an English teacher, so I’d better grab my daughter’s savings, pick up some booze and hookers, and get involved in some brawls on the streets before all the other English teachers beat me to it. I hate getting the late pickings!

    Good evening!

    • Sponge Monkey

I feel like a tool posting that on this thread. I meant to post it on jokes and humor. Sorry.

  • Sponge Monkey

My wife brought up an excellent point. I’m interested in hearing (especially one person) people’s thoughts.

My wife got really agitated (and if you knew her family, you wouldn’t blame her) at one statement that seems to be recurring here, and as well, had a suggestion.

We were talking about the foreigners take on this story. I told her the re-occurring message that “the woman is guilty of breaking the law because she was carrying a baby, and couldn’t afford the 40k”. Probably a good thing none of you were here for her reaction to that. She didn’t like it.

My wife is of a very honest, hard working family. Her father is one of those people that has gotten in trouble before for representing the people of his village, not to mention he got royally screwed years back when he refused to take a bribe to shut up. He’s actually at it again, but that’s another story. To be honest, I wish I had a dad like him (I guess now, I do as an in-law). Anyways, getting off point.

How is it fair that criminals, corrupt officials, scam artists, and extortionists are able to have a second child because they can afford the fee? How is it fair that only a small percentage of the country can afford to legally have a second child? There are so many Chinese that work so much harder and are much better parents than the “rich elite”.

My wife’s exact quote (translated) “Mao sold us on communism. We thought we were all equal. Even today, China is still called communist. Why can some rich SB have 3 or 4 children and a hard working couple that has almost no options in life, be treated like this and told she is a criminal? Do the rich people with 3 or 4 children give us good, hard working Chinese people? You (me, Sponge Monkey, the husband) ask me why China is so obsessed with money? This is why. If you have no money, you are not people in China. If China is really fair, then NO ONE can buy a second child.”

    • linette

      Sponge Monkey
………..rich SB have 3 or 4 children and a hard working couple that has almost no options in life, be treated like this and told she is a criminal……..

I always thought the one child policy apply on everyone in China. After reading the posts of other people I just find that only apply to 35% people and the rich can buy themselves out of this policy and have 3 or 4 babies. This is absolutely corruption. I am so disgusted. The OCP is Bullshxt if you tell me.

It should be OCP for everyone no matter rich or poor and practice prevention and education. Absolutely no forced abortion.

    • The Enlightened One

It is quite interesting, it seems like “communist” China is anything but. I would have to say that it is actually much more favored towards capitalism than anything. Something I did this evening, reminded me of this story.

I was walking around my residential complex and saw a build entirely empty across from a building that was entirely full. I asked someone if the building was new, they said no.. it was a year old. I asked “Where are all the people?”, they said they don’t live there, they just bought it for whatever reason… Usually, just for the sake of investment or for buying up space.

The reason it reminded me of this story is because it was obvious that there is a group of Chinese people that are buying up things they don’t need, raising living costs for the poor and are being entitled to more than they should. I see all the makings of a revolution if this sort of society continues.

  • Notorious

The daily mail has an excellent article that tells who took the pictures (her sister), why the woman could not make the payment (her mother needed it for cancer treatment), and how she was beaten. The woman interviewed NBC. This is a huge embarrassment for China because it involves killing a baby. I had my first son at 7 months pregnant and he is a huge boy today. That was a baby, not a “fetus”.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2159178/Feng-Jianmei-China-apologises-forced-abortion-child-policy-breach.html

This news is huge now. China is in for a big embarrassment! Good. It’s about time China stop brutal treatment to these pregnant women.

  • Cleo

Of course, an unborn fetus can “totally survive” – the Japanese taught us that when they ripped open the bellies of pregnant Chinese women and hung those LIVING babies from their belts like netsuke to “die on the vine” and the bigger ones like this 7 month old baby would have been tied to their front fender in the same way as the pink bear in Toy Story 3. JESUS, remember your history if you want to understan the output from China’s Ministry of Propaganda. How ELSE is China going to express and educate us about what the Japanese did to us. We DON’T HAVE FREEDOM OF PRESS OR FREEDOM OF SPEECH not because China is terribly governed but because China must be protected from igniting the horrors of Japanese terrorism. Do you think the food safety measures were only thought up now after China killed its own? China had safety and hygiene checks on food companies BEFORE the war. This is all about protecting us without looking like we know what Japan is up to.

AKIHITO STINKS AND HE DEMANDS POLICING. HE HAS TO BE DEALT WITH.

I support the population control measures. This is illegal though and it seems rare. Tragedies bound to happen. You an argue that it’s because the system in place which allows for things like this to happen, but it’s relatively rare. It’s illegal. People involved have been punished. One thing I noticed though is for example, I’ve noticed in the major cities this is strictly enforced and people also conform (like all my cousins and their friends are single child). Then I know some dudes from southern China (met in the US) who has like a bunch of siblings. These are my only data points. My cousins and friends in China are all single child, then southerners all have a bunch of siblings. Not sure…

Absolutely tragic!!! To here some people on these boards(“Ming”) imply that it is RIGHT, to kill this baby, because the parents broke the law???!!!! How very, VERY sad, that China has reached this point. (and NO, we are far from perfect in the US)

Wait … China can send people into space, but they cannot figure out other options but to rip unborn babies out of mother’s wombs. Sorry, but why are people so proud of China? Later on the human rights lawyer hooded her to sue the government for money, and she U turned.

What happened to this woman in China is nothing new.

“Statistically, the United States ranks high on the list of countries whose inhabitants kill their children. For infants under the age of one year, the American homicide rate is 11th in the world, while for ages one through four it is 1st and for ages five through fourteen it is fourth. From 1968 to 1975, infanticide of all ages accounted for almost 3.2% of all reported homicides in the United States.”

    disgusting to say the least…

  • Brittany Sanders

Wwow. I had no idea you guys’ policy was so strict..thats horrible

  • Chelle Eastman

I came upon this by accident. As a NICU nurse of many years I can see this infant could have easily survived. Sadly, as much as people look down upon China, the US is not a lot better. While our ability to save the extremely premature skews our statistics greatly, we also are among the highest in infant and child mortality by intent. This is why the anti-choicers SO confuse and infuriate me. If they’d seen just a small portion what I’ve seen of what happens to unwanted and neglected children, they would see EARLY, first trimester abortion as a mercy in many cases…and the laws protect the beings who commit the atrocities. I will NOT call them parents, because they are not. I pray for this young woman, her husband and her baby…and for less ignorance in my own country as well.

  • Olya

No doubt a policy written by man. I would hate the thought that a woman would do it to another woman. Sterilizing ppl by force would be more merciful than this. And of course the rich can get away with anything and the poor suffer

  • Jack

You need to address the gender balance in China. the only way to achieve better social stability is to get a boy-girl birth ratio of 85-100 to soak up the “bare branches” down the line. This will involve extreme carrot and stick measures ranging from preferential employment opportunities and subsidization of families with two or more daughters, to lotteries resulting in forced abortions of males. This will result in a lot less social upheaval in china 20-30 years down the line.

  • FoetalFiesta

What barbaric activities these Chinese engage in…

  • nulloman

How disgusting that amounts to murder in my country how horrible for the poor women. why did they not force her before the baby was at this stage, this just saddens me regardless. There are couples dying to have children but cannot and you just kill a child like its nothing, this is horrible.

  • chinesepig

It doesnt help racial tolerance. Westerners advocate for the protection of the oppressed and then something like this happens condoned by the government. Dont ask for our understanding of your culture. We cannot accept child abuse in any form. Your culture seems to make it normal. Understand why we give up!
