CCTV Yang Rui’s Anti-Foreigner Rant, Chinese Netizen Reactions

CCTV International presenter Yang Rui on tv show with guest.

On the Sina Weibo account of CCTV International host Yang Rui

@主持人杨锐: The Ministry of Public Security must clean out foreign garbage, arresting foreign thugs and protect ignorant/innocent girls, with Wudaokou and Sanlitun being the disaster areas [worst places]. Behead the snake heads [human traffickers], the unemployed Americans and Europeans who come to China to make money, trafficking in people, misleading the public and encouraging them to emigrate. Identify the foreign spies, who find a Chinese woman to cohabitate with, while their job is to collect intelligence, drawing maps and perfecting GPS [coordinates] for Japan, Korea, Europe, and America under the guise of being tourists. Drive out the foreign shrew, shut down Al-Jazeera’s Beijing Office, let those who demonize China shut their mouths and fuck off!

There were only a ~3300 forwards and ~1600 comments of this microblog post so according to Chinese internet standards, this was not very popular.

Comments on Sina Weibo:

凌通社_V有容奶大:

Might as well just close the country off to the world.

刑警大队的雷子:

Apart from protecting the ignorant girls, the rest I approve of. 99% of those who chase foreigners are not ignorant, just vain and avaricious.

Nathan-郭:

No need to demonize, [China] already is a demon.

文婧-Love小毛驴:

How did China approve visas for these foreign trash?

Rick_张洪征:

Brother, calm down.

天下乐田:

Don’t make everything into a campaign/movement; Also no need to demonize the “three illegals”, after all they are just a small minority, and those who are a true danger to society are still our own people; The key still is to raise our level of management and work efficiency.

[Note: "Three Illegals" refers to foreigners who illegal entered, are illegally staying, or are illegally working in China.]

aluo5:

What makes Chinese men the most upset is Chinese girls one by one being seized into the arms of those various foreigners who are both old and ugly and may even have physical defects and then being their playthings.

泽畔微言:

Sometimes it is the Chinese women themselves who are foolish, and you can’t blame them [foreigners].

漂流的火锅:

I’m a little confused: Wasn’t the crime of hooliganism abolished? Under what name is the Ministry of Public Security using, campaign or crackdown? Apart from protecting ignorant girls, shouldn’t they also protect all citizen’s lawful freedom and rights? Why differentiate the treatment between foreign hooligans/thugs and native hooligans/thugs? Isn’t the harm of native thugs who exploit public power even larger? [思考]

11四十不惑11:

What should be done about fake foreign devils?

Yang Rui holding up a camera taking a photo.

ILOVE鲍鱼:

Fucking should’ve been doing this long ago. I don’t understand why our countrymen are always bowing and scraping before foreigners!? Laowai are fucking humans too, why does everyone fucking look so highly upon them, fucking stupid cunts.

龙腾山巅:

These words are going to make foreign-worshipers upset.

樱桃娘:

Who did Al-Jazeera offend…?

隐不溜丢:

The rest is whatever, but what happened with Al-Jazeera?

Vichien维秦:

I strongly agree with everything else, apart from banishing Al-Jazeera. Why do foreign media always demonize China? Europe and America is like this, Japan and Korean is like this. All well-known international media has been shut out by us.

ZEDDD:

The things you’re saying is to protect yourself, right?

人重脚软:

You’re already how old and you still don’t talk reasonably. If it weren’t for a certain government’s indulgence, would foreigners be so outrageous? Moreover, about demonizing China, do people really need to demonize it? Open your eyes and look at this Communist Party-led society: Towards its own, fighting for every inch of land without regard for the lives of the ordinary common people; Toward foreigners, condemning and protesting while sending money… Stop hiding at CCAV every day fantasizing. In comparison to [other CCTV presenters] Cui Yongyuan, BaiYansong, and Zhao Pu, I even feel embarrassed for them!

超级臭鱼:

Is it this serious?

妍妈aysha:

Not clear on the matter with Al-Jazeera, so no comment. However, I have in Sanlitun run into before a very rude and obnoxious German, a fat laowai married woman who arrogantly looked down on Chinese people, simultaneously making money in China while trampling on our countrymen’s dignity.

李德基:

The Europeans and Americans who come to China, if they’re not on official business, then they’re idiots, or slackers, or cheats, whereas the Chinese people who go to Europe and America, if they’re not bosses, then they’re corrupt officials, or the society’s elites!

阳光的幸运一生:

My Chinese company’s CEO is a foreign national Chinese, so what should he be counted as?

邢岳:

This is how the Boxers started back in the day…[汗]

快活林阿甘:

Ding! I ding this with all my might! In Beijing there is a group of foreign stupid cunts, all day eating and drinking and hitting on cheap girls. I think it is strange, their entire body covered with hair like they haven’t evolved, and their poor cunts without jobs, and there are so many young girls willing to be with them, chasing after foreigners, and they’re quite beautiful too. Wake up, actually they’re all laid-off thugs who have come to Beijing without prospects, with that bastard who was beat up several days ago being an example.

Donduk_Sufferin:

Was it Al-Jazeera misleading the public or certain people unwilling to face the truth?? Afraid of others exposing something, right? Why is a large grown man like you talking like an idiot without character?

游云庭律师 :

“Drive out the foreign shrew, shut down Al-Jazeera’s Beijing Office”. Not having this kind of CCTV presenter write editorials for Beijing Daily is a waste of talent.

将军令7204:

Microblog owner, you say this, I feel like I’m living in a fantasy world. You being a television presenter is a waste of talent, you should join the Central Propaganda Department!

海边的金子:

Support the Ministry of Public Security, drive out Marx, Engels, Stalin, Lenin, and other foreign garbage.

腾飞的2012:

What is demonizing China? Are Chinese people ignorant of what kind of country they live in? When in Rome, do as the Romans do…

天天落井下石:

I don’t know if you’re really this stupid, or just pretending to be this stupid.

僧叡:

Looks like a new Cultural Revolution has arrived, and these media personalities standing on the front line are the first to sniff the scent, beginning to declare their loyalty.

CCTV International presenter Yang Rui in Europe with Mercedes Benz.

中央丛林-欧阳:

Whether foreigners are thugs/hooligans or not I don’t know, but this presenter has already demonstrated that he is a thug. Foreign thugs should be cleaned out, but this presenter thug should be cleaned out even more.

OLO_R:

Mental retard.

独关风月:

Mister, don’t be so angry! If China hasn’t done anything to be ashamed of, if China has enough self-confidence, then it wouldn’t be afraid of others demonizing you [China]! If you’re frightened into a nervous breakdown just because others said a few things about you, you probably should ask yourself if you’re mentally healthy!

段炼sognosatan:

~~~Oh, it’s just a CCTV presenter!
本欲无言:
Absolutely avoid going up against CCTV’s lowly stupid cunts, there is nothing in the world that is less worth it.
piaoxiang9945:
There sure are a TMD lot of wumao dogs amongst CCTV presenters. If you’re so niubi, why don’t you go safeguard the Huangyan Islands?
狮子莞莞:
My god, how did the Boxers get reborn in CCTV?!
大大的悠哈糖:
Might as well stop broadcasting bullshit language news as well [referring to CCTV International in English]. After all, if the foreign trash are cleaned out, who will be left to listen to it? [Yang Rui hosts an CCTV show called Dialogue, which is in English.]
    Chinese people are all over the world, there is probably a china town in every big city of the planet LOL.
    Anyway he better get used to it, with China becoming the 1st country in the world , people from all over the world will get attracted to it and will want to try their luck in China. I wonder how they will handle it lol omg i bet it is going to be super fun ha ha ha
  • DeVitaVackra
    Makes you wonder if you’re really welcomed as a foreigner in China.
    • South > North
      I feel welcome in Southern China by the Cantonese (Guangzhou), but then again the Cantonese are much more sophisticated than the northern or central Chinese.
          Which means they are not nice people really.
    Man, the pretentious photos with the pipe are just the icing on the cake. What a douche.
  • Finishhim
    It’s only a problem if people believe he is right and act on it. Western media outlets have a lot of alleged journalists that use this style a lot. Luckily, cooler heads will prevail and it won’t be accepted. 99.9 percent know that this was a knee-jerk reaction to a terrible event that happened a couple of days prior. He should make an apology and take a break for awhile
    • Made In World
      Very much doubt ANY of these western journalists “using this style a lot” are in China.
    • Anon
      No matter how much bluster you might see in western EDITORIALS, you won’t see “a lot” writing about “Chinese trash” unless they’re talking about faulty products.
      • An anonymous boy…
        It’s my understanding this was his micro-blog… So, it isn’t exactly journalism or an editorial right? It’s just the guys opinion if that is true.
        However in general in Western media, you don’t find a lot people being bigots outside of their job publicly who are connected with the media because it is a career destroyer (see Juan Williams’ Muslim comments).
        • Made In World
          Jack Cafferty – Chinese foreign ministry demanded an apology
          All countries, INCLUDING China, should demand the same from this son of a shrew!
        • fredf
          TV personalities in China do not have freedom of speech. That is why he follows a script on all his interviews.
          I am sure that his bosses approve everything that he says and writes.
          The intention is that his first post will be remembered and repeated. Any follow-up apologies or explanations will be ignored.’
          Yang Rui does not speak his own mind. Yang Rui speaks for his bosses at CCTV
          • An anonymous boy…
            I can’t say I would know exactly how things work at a specific news organisation. I doubt you could either. But it’s not like the guy doesn’t have free will, and can’t make a mistake or do something stupid.
            The state organ disagrees with you also:
            “Yang posted the message on his personal Weibo account instead of speaking out on his program. It expressed his personal view and feelings and had nothing to do with his job.”
    • An anonymous boy…
      I think this guy is a little more respected (before the incident) then people who you are probably referring to. Maybe an example is Rush Limbaugh? (who isn’t really a journalist, but a commentator).
      Furthermore, he already has clarified his statements:
      “After looking at these incidents I termed these expats “foreign trash,” and I believe they should be brought to justice if they are found to have violated our laws. I want to separate them from the silent majority in the expat communities who obey and respect our culture and society.”
      • Made In World
        Regardless. Whether it was Cafferty, Dan Rather, Larry King, or Elmo; China would have demanded an apology.
        We should expect absolutely no less. If not, watch what happens…
        • An anonymous boy…
          IDK, it would seem pretty insincere at this point due to his “clarifying”. So I don’t care.
          Actually, I don’t or wouldn’t care: it is just some random dude’s opinion (who has some popularity). Plus in some sense I am trash as is everyone. Everything is perspective.
        • An anonymous boy…
          Interestingly, the people’s daily opinion on the matter cites:
          “CNN host Jack Cafferty made remarks in a TV show in April 2008 that the Chinese people are “basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they’ve been for the last 50 years.” However, CNN didn’t dismiss him because of his vile words.”
          http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/90882/7824186.html
          China did demand an apology as you predicted.
          However, Cafferty never apologized: he just went on to clarify his opinion stating he meant the Chinese government.
          • Anon
            Which was, from the context and the (slightly inaccurate) “50 years” bit, completely obvious to everybody, including the government. The use of “the Americans” as shorthand for “the US government” is commonplace in Chinese, and Cafferty’s usage shouldn’t have been confusing to anybody. I’m sure that many Chinese who only saw or remembered the words “goons and thugs” (because that was pretty much what was repeated again and again) but as far as I’m concerned the government reaction was pretty much fake outrage. There’s no way they didn’t understand it was referring to the government.
          • An anonymous boy…
            Actually, cnn did issue an apology it seems for him:
            “It was not Mr Cafferty, or CNN’s intent to cause offence to the Chinese people.” He never apologized to the government.
            @Anon… Yes I agree. If you listen to the whole thing it is obvious to me he is talking about Chinese government. But I can’t really say what other people would think.
      • Made In World
        SILENT MAJORITY? I need clarification on how I should not be insulted by that.
        • Made In World
          AND by the way, SILENT MAJORITY most CERTAINLY does not refer to ANYONE on ChinaSmack!
          • anon
            It does, just not the commenters.
  • jeffli
    on the one hand I kind of agree with this guy a little bit. the “foreign trash should be kicked out. Any expat /tourist should respect the country they visit/ temporarily work in.
    My gripe is there’s so many Chinese in my home country and not all of them behave themselves, but the Chinese community pretend they don’t know what the fuss is about.
    I think the laws in china are already tough, most foreigners behave themselves. Sure there are a few “bad eggs” and the China govt. has every right to kick them out.
    I wish the same understanding when other countries do the same to visiting Chinese. One big joke is the number of “Chinese political refugees” in Australia spending half their time in illegal or grey activities at the casinos.
    I don’t want to over criticise but
    I think it comes down not to the highest education but the average education level, it is lower in China than other developed countries
    example:- how many educated Chinese even know that Australia and New Zealnd is south of the equator? basic stuff here isn’t it? I see a few red faces huffing allready…….summer in China = winter in Aus and New zealand? huh?
    I’ve not heard of public first aid courses in China? Why?
    very basic geographical and general knowledge ?……………… huh we’re all Americans…..????
    Armed with a public with this lack of general knowledge, a handicap to rationalise facts, stubbornness in the never ending quest to seek face before truth, people as outspoken as RUI become dangerous!
    It would be great if more Chinese would visit these other countries and see such things as
    young people stand up for older people on buses and trains,
    orderly queueing,
    polite soft spoken mannerisms,
    talk slowly to foreign friends,
    not make ridiculous pricing
    deliberately cheat people with broken items.
    fakes?
    poison foods killing children?
    Traffic accidents?
    Govt officials/ the rich and their children running around like screaming brats (“My father is LiGang” is a joke overseas right now!)
    Hmmmmm?
    I’d like to see Chinese have a normal and safe life in their own country, to see fair justice. let everyone have at minimum a long and happy life without other peoples expense.
    This is not the way to go about it.
    I’m reposting another post because I think it’s on the nose…
    I agree with some of the last comments. Write to your consulate. I am a foreigner living in China, and there was one really bad comment made there. The comment about foreign spies. My daughter already goes through tons of crap with being half Chinese… now she has to deal with this?
    WRITE TO YOUR EMBASSY… here’s an example
    Dear….
    I am writing to you in regards to a recent incident that has taken place in China. Recently, an international Chinese journalist, Yang Rui, was quoted as saying, “The Public Security Bureau must clean up foreign trash, snatch foreign vagabonds and protect our innocent girls.”
    As a (NATIONALITY HERE) I am extremely offended by these comments and concerned about my security and well being in China in the future.
    Other comments that concerned me were, “We already kicked out that foreign bitch [Melissa Chan] and shut down Al Jazeera’s Beijing office, to show people who demonize China that they can shut up and beat it.”
    These comments are vaguely reminiscent of other dangerous powers in the past.
    (FOR THOSE WHO ARE MARRIED TO CHINESE)
    The most alarming remark was, “Foreign spies seek out Chinese girls to mask their espionage and pretend to be tourists while compiling maps and GPS data for Japan, Korea and the West.”
    If this is the tone from China right now, not only do I demand an apology from CCTV, I also want to know if my wife and child qualify as “in danger” in our current conditions. Can we seek asylum?
    (END OF CHINESE WIFE comments)
    I am demanding that my government gets an explanation from Beijing. I demand that an apology be made by CCTV (and perhaps the government). I demand that my country stand up for me the way China stood up for their people when Cafferty, an American CNN reporter, stated, in 2008, that the Chinese powers were still the “goons and thugs” they were 50 years ago. The Chinese foreign ministry demanded an apology. I expect the same.
    As a (NATIONALITY) citizen, I demand that you assist myself and fellow (NATIONALITY) in this situation. The reason I demand this is because I can.
    I am extremely concerned for my safety. I expect my government to get some answers and reassurances that this will not happen again.
    If the Chinese (with their “rights” system) can get this from CNN, I definately expect my government to stand up for me!
    I have forwarded this email to all of the appropriate news agencies. I hope my government will stand up for my rights.
    ….
    Can I also say, I love Citizen X! He’s one hell of a son of a shrew!
    • Made In World
      This was posted by John… I think… not my words, but good sentiments. Make your foreign ministry get as pissed off as this one gets!
  • Ba Ba Booey
    It is very disappointing to constantly read postings where people are always labeling other people by race, calling them a derogatory terms then using this as a basis to justify the problem at hand. Immigrants in any country for the most part are more an asset then they are a problem. Countries who have closed their doors to the world in the past an present tend not to be prosperous. Don’t forget where china was before they opened their doors to world in the 1980′s and where North Korea is today.
    The US was able to grow and be strong because they adopted the slogan “Give me your tired, your poor your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”. The immigrants came from all over the world. With them they brought new ideas, different cultures, skilled workers and most important they brought their dreams. When the immigrants came everyone benefited, with the exception of the indigenous Native Americans. Isolation of any kind has proven not good anyone except for the controlling party.
    The days of dictators are limited. The biggest fear a dictator has today is a society of educated and knowledgable citizens. When people know too much they are dangerous and become a threat. Closing ones countries doors to immigrants, and foreigners is closing their doors to any threats to their leadership. Read between the lines and don’t focus on the propaganda of distractions dealt out by governments today.
    • Made In World
      This is why we need to use and show the rights we have and contact our governments. Rather than just yelling and name calling, let’s show them how the system works… there’s been two great posts mainly the demand for an apology by foreign ministries of foreigners’ respected countries. Regardless of where we are, we are citizens of countries with rights, and no one with that much authority, has the right to publicly insult and berate … well … everyone that’s not Chinese…
      I knew the term laowai would come back to bite them in the ass one day. But then again, what do I know, I’m a trasho son of shrew…
      • anon
        Are you and John the same person?
  • D. Tective
    He hates foreigners and foreign things and proclaims how terrible Western culture is. Yet he smokes western cigars and western pipes, drives a western car, wears western clothes, uses western cameras, and most revealingly, sends his daughter to study in America…. what a hypocritical ZB. If he hates having foreigners in China so much, then he should lead the campaign against all these schools and companies that hire them.
    I married a Chinese lady. She cooks everyday and waits at home while I go out mapping pedestrian crossings with my GPS phone. It’s a hell of a job, this is my 17th year and I still don’t know why my country asked me to do it.
  • k
    What a racist jackass that has done nothing but help to make China look more so like an intolerant, backwards, xenophobic, dangerous place. Foreigners are a tiny, tiny group in China in comparison to how many Chinese and an even tinier portion of those Foreigners committ crimes and I bet its safe to say that there are FARRR more “chinese trash” comitting horrible crimes on a daily basis against their fellow country men then foreigners. But hey this guy doesn’t look like a logical thinker. And any chinese guy that spouts out crap about foreign men with chinese women should really think that the only reason foreign men get chinese women is because the women Want to be them, the chinese women choose their partners and I bet if chinese men were better husbands to their women instead of treating women as second class the chinese women would prefer them to foreign. It also doesn’t help tbat china is shooting itself in the foot with the mass infantcide of girl babies, so there won’t be very many girls available.
    • Made In World
      They’ve got good peaches, though!
    • linette
      k
      You just made bunch of racist statements against Chinese. The stereotype is created by your people. We don’t see it like that. You should not speak for us Chinese women. What do you know? What do you mean Chinese men treat us like second class? For you to say that is like me saying foreign men are known for beating their wives and fxck their own daughters.
      In any culture there are good men and bad men.
      Unfortunately there are a lot of foreign men-whores go to club for one reason, to screw those Chinese women..buy them drinks then xxx them. And you have many more foreign men-whores aggressively pursuing nice Chinese women that are too naive and will believe their sweet talk being deceived by them.
      This Chinese TV host is just saying against those trashy foreign men,, stop deceiving and leave.
      There are many more nice normal foreign men and women we don’t mind living in harmony in our China society. Every country has trash. Right now there are many Chinese on the internet bashing trashy foreigners, at the same time there are just as many do not hate foreigners at all and wish we can live in harmony. All these bashing on the internet is really just like back in high school. You call me names and I call you names….and this is really just as far as it will go. I doubt any of the Chinese netizens will go out to seek and inflict physical violence against foreigners. You may have one or two cases, like people in the bar. crazy drunk people anyway.
      • Little Wolf
        NO, the stereotype is created by YOUR people and when enough of YOUR people start doing things in a right and respectable way with some consistency and it becomes habit then the sterotype will change and we’ll say more good things about you.
        As for “foreign men-whores” going to bars and sweet-talking to girls with the hope of getting laid (OK..I promise…I will never die) you pretty much described every man on the planet, including all your angelic Chinese brothers since they were old enough to drink.
          As for “foreign men-whores” going to bars and sweet-talking to girls with the hope of getting laid………
        Yeeeeeah baby, love the way you think now. That explains why Chinese cities have whole neighbourhoods of Chicken shops and why there are so many KTV that specialise in ‘Bridal’ hosts. And here I was thinking it these places of sleeze were there because of foreigners, well that’s what the Chinese tell me.
    “Everyday, planeloads of Chinese citizens arrive legally in the United States, ordinary people”, 18 years ago, Connie Chung said during her CBS report, “some of them may be future spies, who, a few years down the road, will be activated to steal American’s military and technological secrets”!
    Eighteen years ago, people dismissed warning from Ms. Chung. Since then, there have been “planeloads” of these Chinese faces, men, women and children coming to the US, for eighteen consecutive years, “everyday” – every single fucking day! How many of them had been activated, to be spies?
    Yesterday, Pentagon calls “Chinese entities world’s biggest spies”, ever.
    • anon
      So you’re like Yang Rui but on the other side?
  • Slob
    This guy is the best of the interviewers on CCTV9 and is very open-minded, which is why I like him more than that other woman who looks like someone stuck golfballs in her cheeks. He’s right, get the foreigners out who are giving us all a bad name.
    Problem is that because he’s fairly popular, people will think he’s directing this towards all foreigners which is not good for those of us with good intent.
  • http://www.facebook.com/thechrisbloor Chris Bloor
    I am an Australian married to a Chinese woman so half my family is Chinese. I have been to China 19 times and lived there for 6 months at a time. I am always telling my Western friends how much I love China and the Chinese people.
    This sad, sorry little man belongs in a different age.
    The world has no place for racists.
    Now is the time for China to shine and show the world what a beautiful culture and rich history China has.
    Who appointed this racist as the spokesman for China?
    Something I deeply love and appreciate about the Chinese people I have met is that they are just that – people.
    They accept you as you are and are genuine and peace loving.
    This man does not represent my experience of China.
    I think he has lost face in the eyes of the world by his racist hatred.
    • Slob
      He isn’t racist, he’s saying get rid of the foreigners who are destroying China. He’s not saying “Get rid of foreigners, they’re destroying China”. Learn the difference. If you watch his show on CCTV9 you will see he’s extremely tolerant of foreigners and their cultures and has a lot of experience with it.
      “This man does not represent my experience of China.” You haven’t experienced much of China if you have never heard what he’s saying before.
      • linette
        Slob
        Exactly..that is exactly what he was saying. He is very educated tolerate multi culture very well.
      • http://www.facebook.com/thechrisbloor Chris Bloor
        Interesting that you can tell someone you have never met that they haven’t experienced much of China.
        Actually I have had a wide experience with many levels of Chinese society including senior government leaders.
        People see what they look for.
      • althepict
        I agree with you “he’s saying get rid of the foreigners who are destroying China”. However, how many others will see this. Very few, I believe.
        He should be very careful about he couches his statements. They can be easily misinterpreted.
        • the ace of books
          He thought he was saying that. He intended to say that. The way it came out, though….
          • mr. wiener
            He might be able to explain some it away, but the mask did slip there to expose a very insecure little racist douchebag.
          • the ace of books
            De Nile ain’t just a river in Egypt.
      • DeVitaVackra
        When you single out ethnic groups in the context of criminals and or express contempt against them you are inciting hatred. Perhaps you had no clue about this, but it is a crime to do so in many countries, such as: Germany, Sweden, Finland, France, Ireland, Great Britain, Canada and more. So in a sense, in my foreign point of view, he’s not only a racist he is also a criminal.
  • Parabellum
    What makes me worried about comments like this is the effect will be most likely to set a “trend” into foreigner bashing. There are reports more and more about foreigners being beated up only because they are “foreign trash”. With incendiary comments like those I fear that Chinese people will simply take it for cash and chase foreigners like stray dogs. Maybe I am too alarmist but if someone in this position rants like this, most likely this is being shared among a good portion of chinese people. I fear that they generalize one sad incident (like the rapist from UK) to have everyone to blame.
    I have read some chinese comments. A lot of them screams “foreigners out!”. Well. What they fail to realize is that for 1 foreigner in China, there are maybe 1000 chinese in the US…
    • Slob
      Indeed.
      Their pride will be their downfall eventually. It’s bizarre that so many of them say “get out foreigners” yet they wear foreign branded clothing, eat foreign food, enjoy foreign beverages (coffee, foreign whiskey/beers etc.), drive foreign cars, use foreign electronics, the list goes on. Even foreign baby milk powder is considered superior.
      Many Chinese go to foreign countries and work for lower than minimum wage illegally which converted back into their currency would be the equivalent of a high paying white collar job here. If they brought them all back here, and kicked foreigners out while boycotting foreign goods, the entire country would fall to shit.
      • anon
        They’re thinking like Yang Rui. When they comment anonymously online that foreigners should get out, they’re just referring to the undesirables, not all foreigners. I think that’s obviously the case for most people saying such things, including Yang Rui, completely oblivious to how it might sound racist and offensive to others, just like when non-Chinese people say similar things but about Chinese people.
        • GhostofYost
          I think you’re right anon. They need to learn how to carefully word their statements to avoid sounding racist.
          For example, when I am offering my suggestions of what needs to be done with “black trash”, I am extremely careful to add the vague caveat “not all blacks are bad though”. That way I am completely absolved from being accused of being racist.
          Seriously though, trying to find a silver lining in this whole situation, I will definitely be more aware of over generalizing a whole group of people, positively or negatively in the future. I won’t speak for anyone else on this board, but I know I’ve been guilty of this multiple times in the past (and probably will be again).
          • anon
            I never said vague caveats completely absolve someone from being accused of being racist, just like we routinely make the “I’m not racist but (goes on to say something racist)” joke. My point about Yang Rui is that it’s clear he doesn’t think all foreigners are trash, just as it is clear he’s refusing to apologize for indulging in saying something horrifically stupid and racist. I simply think there are ways to to make critical observations that isn’t needlessly offensive or indulging in racist generalizations.
          • GhostofYost
            I understood your point, perhaps I should have made it clear I understood before I proceeded with a sarcastic remark.
  • althepict
    As a laowai, I’d like to respond. I’ve always been very impressed with Yang Rui’s perception and skills of debate – as well as his English language skills. However, I believe this is out of order.
    I agree many laowai are assholes, but you can’t tar everyone with the same brush.
    Doing so will only inflame neo-Boxer sentiments. How can that be useful?
    I’ve been doing my utmost best for the Chinese people since I came here 8+ years ago. Why should I be lumped in with the dross – those stupid idiots whom you all rightly despise? We laowai despise them too.
    (Perhaps we should have a court in which straight-up Laowai could judge other laowai not to be fit to stay in China.)
    I have never abused any Chinese woman. I have been abused by several Chinese women, but that comes with the territory.
    Please, Yang Rui, don’t turn this into another senseless racist catastrophe.
  • linette
    Ship all the foreigners back to their mother nation if they constantly curse out the Chinese. How many times you see foreigners living in China and constantly making racist and derogative remarks, bad behaviors toward the local Chinese. If they don’t like what the China government is giving them, they can leave China.
    Imagine you have foreigners coming to America and their behavior is so anti-American. As an American, would you want to deal with foreigners calling you dogs and stupid all day long? That is very disrespectful, especially these foreigners are using America government resources.
    I say to all those foreigners who hate Chinese please move back to your mother nation and use your mother nation resources instead. China should really save their money to help out the Chinese poor.
    • Dr SUN
      I’m just guessing Linette you have actually never been to the USA and heard or seen the behaviours and words of “foreigners” living there ?
      I guess you’ve never asked yourself why the restaurants and markets in LA China town are ” CASH ONLY” ummmm……tax evasion.
      Also can I as you what are these Govt resources that those us working here are taking, that you are not ?
      • Notorious
        actually, if you own a business and people use a visa, mastercard, discover, etc – those card companies charge 3% from the business every time the customer uses the card. For example, a 10.99 dinner might net a profit of 7.37.So why would anybody want customers using a debit or credit card? And checks can bounce or cause other headaches. I would charge cash only too.
        • jeff
          Check your math. You say visa charges 3%, then go on to deduct 30%.
          Keep in mind that for that 3% you get guaranteed real money, no fakes. The money can’t be robbed from your by thieves. It can’t be stolen from your by staff. You expand your customer base to those who don’t have actual cash and live on credit.
          It’s really not such a bad deal, IMHO.
          • Notorious
All these small businesses their accountants know how to play with numbers doing their tax. tax evasion..ummmmm..
        I am not talking about you guys. Wasting China resources and money billions of dollars each year are more like the Koreans. The South Korea gov’t need to come up with something with China to ship all Koreans back to South Korea. South Korea should pay for all cost.
        • Brett Hunan
          Are you talking about Chaoxianzhu? Maybe China can give back the Tibetans, the Uighers, and the Mongols too (along with their respective lands)… See how silly you sound?
          Why should South Korea pay for people they dont want?..Chaoxianzhu were originally from the land currently known as North Korea anyways.
          Lets continue this game that commenters have recently taken up. Im going to repost what you wrote, replacing South Korea with China and China with the west.
          “The Chinese gov’t need to come up with something with the west to ship all Chinese back to China. China should pay for all cost.”
          • linette
            Brett Hunan
            Do you not know that the Chaoxianzhu or Joseonjok, and the North Korean refugees…..DO NOT want to be in China. Many of them want to go to South Korea because that is their mother land. That is why many(not all) of them don’t assimilate well into China society (language and tradition). Many of them even hate Chinese. The South Korean go’vt needs to help these people and get them back into their mother land. Especially the North Korean refugees. There are like estimated 400 to 450 thousands of them living off from China’s resource. They all want to go to South korea. China needs to spend the money on poor rural Chinese and Skorea needs to spend money helping the refugees and transport them back to South Korea. Do not send them back to North Korea to die.
            ……..Why should South Korea pay for people they dont want?..Chaoxianzhu were originally from the land currently known as North Korea anyways…..
            Who are they to say “I don’t want them.” Why? Just let the refugees die? Some one has to provide for them. It’s your people. Your family. Now South Korea go take care of your family.
            Tibetans, the Uighers, and the Mongols I wonder what will happen to them if China cut them loose and no longer financially involved with them. Koreans have South Korea to provide for them. They just need to go back to SK.
            And yeah, for those Chinese that don’t respect the Western countries that they live in or their people. They should leave and go back to China. Just like most Koreans should leave and go back to South Korea.
            Who are you? The South Korea ambassador?
          • Brett Hunan
            linette,
            1. The Chinese government has specifically requested that the South Korean government does not accept Chaoxianzhu as immigrants (unless of course, they marry into South Korea, as many foreigners do every year).
            2. “Who are they to say I don’t want them?” Well, linette, they are a country that doesn’t want an influx of immigrants that also don’t assimilate well into Korean society because, whether you say so or not, they have adopted Chinese language and culture.
            3. SOUTH KOREA WANTS TO HELP NORTH KOREAN REFUGEES! China keeps sending them back to North Korea to be killed! South Korea never even insinuated “just let them die”… you are confusing what I wrote about Chaoxianzhu with North Korean refugees. Again, SK does not want an influx of immigrants who don’t integrate into Korean culture, whereas, SK flat out cannot help every NK refugee right now.
            4. Tibetans, Uighers, and Mongols were doing okay before China, and they will be just fine if they were “released”. Their standards of how they want to live have always been different. Do you not recall the Chinese government arguing “look what we have given you: electricity, roads, trains… blah blah blah”? The Tibetans say “WE NEVER ASKED FOR IT AND WE DON’T WANT IT.”
            5. No, I am not the South Korean Ambassador. I just can’t stand your bullshit. I also call out the bullshit spilling from Korean nationalists at koreaBANG, so don’t feel like I am defending China or South Korea unequally.
          • linette
            Brett Hunan
            1)You really believe that China don’t want South korea gov’t to accept Chaoxianzhu as immigrants (unless of course, they marry into South Korea, as many foreigners do every year)? You heard that from the South kOrea public media right? Tell me why would china do that?
            2)There are a lot more Chaoxianzhu that haven’t embraced the Chinese culture and language. They keep to their own Korean group. The China Chinese see them as foreigners. These Chaoxianzhu are not foreigners to the South KOreans. They are their family. South Korea don’t have to treat them like immigrants or second class and they shouldn’t. They fit right in because they are Koreans. Same language and culture.
            3) SOUTH KOREA WANTS TO HELP NORTH KOREAN REFUGEES! China keeps sending them back to North Korea to be killed! …….
            There are estimated 400 to 450 thousands of refugees in China. How many did China send back? A few thousands? IF China really want to do that you think China don’t have the power to swept the nation and arrest them? China instead look the other way. There are private organizations also from south K in China trying to help these refugees and transport them to Skorea…but their efforts and funds are limited not enough. Why isn’t the SK gov’t get fully involved and help? Don’t tell me SK gov’t don’t have the money. China spend like billion each years dealing with these Koreans. The Sk gov’t and their citizens can dig deeper into their pockets and take the responsibility.
            4) no comment with that one. I only wish no more violence between China and those people.
            5) my bullshxt? YOu need to open your eyes and ears and stop listening to the South Korea public media spreading bullshxt. I can’t stand your bullshxt neither. You are so ignorant.
          • Brett Hunan
            It doednt matter what you or I want to believe, China asked South Korea not to accept them. Take up your beef with your local officials.
            China sends back everyone they catch in the process of escaping North Korea. I imagine that China doesnt want to waste the resources to sweep the country looking for illegals. I suggest you read stories about North Korean refugees to understand how hard they have to try and not be caught in China because China does not harbor refugees. If they get caught, they get sent back.
            As for the rest, I will assume you are trolling, or worse you are just a complete idiot refusing to expand your views (ironically this is something you have accused me of before). Like I wrote in the Broken ATM article, there is nothing wrong with being nationalistic. There is a lot wrong with resorting to insulting me because I prove you wrong. Again, check out the Broken ATM article in which you got angry at a stupid comment by Ryo. Lets see how you manage to spin my remarks as “ignorant” there too.
          • linette
            Brett Hunan
            Trust me, China is not making too much effort catching those illegal Korean refugees inside China. That is why there are more and more coming…soon it will be 700 thousands. Every China Chinese knows that. I don’t want to see China do that neither. Those private church groups South Koreans inside China are doing what they can to help transport them to south Korea. The Sk gov’t need to get more involved and help. Nothing is impossible with the gov’t. They just need to prioritize what is the more important issue and allocate the fund. China is really not responsible paying and protecting the refugees.
            Talking to you is like talking to a brick wall. You look at everything only from one side…the Korean side.
            What ATM? send me the link. You dumb dumb.
          • Brett Hunan
            You are just repeating what I write and then ignoring the original meaning, creating your own arguments from thin air.
            I can take name calling andI can put up with idiocy, but dont just lie and say that I only view things from the South Korean side. It is far from the truth. Again, I do the same to South Korean nationalists at koreaBANG when they say something completely out of wack.
          • linette
            Brett Hunan
            You can argue all day long and talk non sense if you will. The truth is that many China Chinese are angry that the South Korea gov’t are not doing enough to help with the crisis of refugees.
    Yes, we here in the U.S have the same problem with undesirable aliens. Fake Chinese students who are really spies after our technology. If they can’t steal tech from the Russians they try to get it from us. Haven’t invented anything original since the abacus. Mexicans are worse only because the Chinese at least know how to bathe.
    • althepict
      Undesirable aliens? And who are you, in your abundant presumptuousness, may I presume to ask?
      • althepict
        Oh, I see. Americans are after Chinese bodies while Chinese are after US technology. Is that it? Which do you think is more moral?
            Only liked girls during puberty, never really considered guys. Didn’t wanna stand out, boys calling each other “gay” and all that
            Late teens I stopped being so self conscious, checked out sum male erotica and thought “Hey, dicks are pretty cool.” This was followed by some thrilling experiments with a really cute friend
    Armchair nationalism. I don’t even think he is really xenophobic, even though his language is. He’s trash talking on weibo because he likes the excitement of all fellow inferiortity complex sufferers praising him. If he wants to complain about unqualified or illegal foreigners why not use the faux erudite tone he strives for in English? Why not invite some guests on his show to discuss this issue? He is in a position to really do something, right? Why drag out the insults and extreme language? Bully on the weibo playground. Nothing more.
  • Olrik
    Too many Chinese are now in Canada. They artificially raise the price of homes and condos in cities like Vancouver and Toronto, and form foreign enclaves where all the signs and spoken languages are Chinese eg. Markham in Toronto. They are flooding Canadian universities and taking positions away from Canadian students because of their repressive “Tiger Mother” training in mathematics and hard sciences. They are introducing vile habits to Canadian society such as consuming dog meat and other foods traditionally forbidden here, including, amazingly, human flesh in the guise of traditional medicines. Chinese organized crime is behind a large surge of illegal immigration to Canada, filthy sex trade businesses, and narcotics manufacture and distribution. Chinese espionage activities against Canadian defence and industry targets is out of control. Their numbers should be thinned out through massive deportation and a new form of “head tax” applied to new visitors. Like it? See, it works both ways…
      • moop
        i guess you havent paid attention to the dead-baby pills story recently?
        • anon
          Yes, that was media sensationalism and misinformation. All that was found in the pills was human bio-matter. It can’t be determined if they were from dead babies. What is likely, because there is actual documented history about this, is that they contained placenta, which has been known to be used in some traditional Chinese medicine. So Joe Blow is correct.
          • moop
            the chinese ministry of health said the pills were made from human bio-matter.
            http://saturn.ihp.sinica.edu.tw/~huangkc/nhist/10-4CC.html
            http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2140702/South-Korea-customs-officials-thousands-pills-filled-powdered-human-baby-flesh.html
            “very likely” does not mean it is confirmed to placenta. the placenta thing is well-known in chinese medicine. seeing the way aborted babies have been disposed of in china in the past is enough to not count this report as simply misinformation
            “The ‘flesh of dead babies’ that South Korea claimed to have found is very likely to be placenta, which is human tissue as well”
          • moop
            jesus, that was barely coherent.
            i’m not buying the placenta argument, considering all the sources i have found making that are all prc affiliated. tcm’s use of placenta is widely known, i don’t think such a stir would have been caused if they were just placental.
            china’s record of dealing with feti are not exactly stellar and are one of the reasons this story is believable.
            so far it seems only government mouthpieces are refuting this claim, the same bureacracy that puts clips from “top gun” in their military programs and tries to pass off the footage as their own
          • moop
            http://sanfrancisco.ibtimes.com/articles/193371/20110805/china-dead-baby-pill-stamina-booster-cannibal-placenta.htm
            “The Korean team acquired the dead baby capsules and ran DNA tests on it. The test results reportedly indicated the pills were 99.7 percent human. The test also found hair and nail remnants, and even the gender of the baby could be identified. The process will be aired with visuals in the SBS TV documentary ”
            never known placenta to have hair and nails. considering that the koreans are the one who actually did the testing and not any chinese sources, the only party we can assume is speculating are those saying this is placenta
          • anon
            First, I’m disturbed that you’re referencing the Daily Mail, a shining example of misinformation and sensationalism if there ever was one.
            Second, the Koreans themselves said it was human bio-matter after conducting tests. What the Chinese Ministry of Health has said is they haven’t found any pharmaceutical companies using dead babies making dead baby pills. The part about the powder being from dead babies (or fetuses) is hearsay, as in there is no actual evidence of it. The same problems and criticisms cropped up after the SBS report last year.
            None of these Western “news organizations” actually investigated the matter, they just reported the same things that appeared in the sensational Korean media reports that the AP based its report on. If you look at the actual evidence, all that is known is that there is human bio matter in them. Many of the original reports also mentioned placenta, but the dead baby part was more sensational of course.
            Third, the abstract for a research paper on an obscure folk practice in traditional Chinese medicine that isn’t even supported by the vast majority of Chinese medicine users isn’t evidence for the pills containing dead babies or aborted fetuses. I suppose you’re trying to prove that Chinese medicine includes the use of human flesh (you know, like blood transfusions and organ transplants?), but its interesting that the abstract itself even explicitly states: “flesh-curing was solely intra-family” which overturns the whole idea of manufacturing dead baby pills from unknown dead babies for unknown strangers’ sexual potency and vitality.
            Of all the habits that Chinese immigrants to Canada are introducing, I really doubt human flesh as traditional medicine is remotely statistically significant. The use of human flesh in traditional Chinese medicine in any sense approaching conventional cannibalism isn’t even statistically significant in China itself. What we have here is people being all too eager to believe something about a foreign race/ethnicity/culture because it reinforces their prejudices. The closest statistically significant Chinese behavior approaching cannibalism is biting and eating one’s fingernails.
            He was going to sell those in Taiwan. There is no reference to Chinese medicine or even if they are to be consumed, but if he thought he could sell the bodies in Taiwan, I’d imagine there is a demand for them.
          • moop
            i guess you’re trying to paint me as prejudice. i would sooner believe those who actually tested the samples than those who never did and have the most to lose if there indeed were found to be dead babies in the pills. combining that with china’s record towards life (most executions in the world, forced abortions, feti thrown in rivers and dumpsters [sometimes while still alive], slavery, human trafficking, forced crippling of children, attitudes towards the disabled) the report becomes pretty easy to believe, at least more readily than again reports by the chinese who have te most to lose if the information gets out (something the government, especially the ministry of health has lots of experience in, remember SARS?).
          • anon
            Brett, yeah, I know its people who believe in “black magic”. The Chinese response was in reaction to people suggesting it is some sort of widespread institutionalized practice, because that’s what the SBS report suggested. I’ve certainly heard of crazy black magic practices in Asia, you get a lot of these stories out of Hong Kong and Guangdong. Fact still remains that they’re not statistically significant deviancy. Just recently there was a Japanese guy who cooked and served up his own genitals on Twitter. There are some weird beliefs and behavior everywhere. The problem with this story is how it is sensationalized.
            moop, you’re not understanding my point. Korean Customs themselves didn’t say they determined that they were made from chopped up and ground up aborted baby fetuses. They only said it was human bio matter. I understand your point about Chinese having a conflict of interest, but that could be accused of the Korean media as well. What we need is a third-party to independently examine and investigate. How come there isn’t any? Why are people blindly repeating sensationalist claims absent actual evidence? The prejudice is in choosing who you want to believe absent actual proof. Just because Chinese people stand to be embarrassed doesn’t automatically mean they’re lying. As you yourself acknowledged, placenta is known to be used, whereas chopped up ground up dead aborted babies are not. What made many of the original Korean reports and subsequent Western re-reporting sensationalist is that they conflate the Korean Customs having done a test with hearsay leading people to believe that the hearsay is supported by the conducted test.
            The rest of your comment about China’s record towards life is irrelevant, just like Americans still using capital punishment and killing civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan wouldn’t substantiate a suggestion that Americans are cannibals. What we need are actual facts and there aren’t any. Instead, we have one fact that’s being conflated with unverified claims from an SBS report last year. That’s why a lot of the reports positioned this Customs seizure as possibly verifying the SBS report, because prior to this, there was no actual evidence supporting the sensationalist SBS report. Problem is, this seizure also doesn’t verify all the claims in that SBS report, yet its being conflated. Literally the only thing we know is that there is human bio matter in the seized pills. There has been no determination of anything else regarding the actual makeup of those human remains.
            SBS and Korean Customs ought to turn over their results and evidence. There’s a reason why the scientific community relies on peer review and independently verifiable results. The media? Not so much. I have way more trust in the Korean Customs test than the SBS report, as Korean Customs are an arm of the government and not just private media, but again the Korean Customs test doesn’t identify the remains as dead aborted babies, just human bio matter.
          • anon
            NOT that governments are necessarily more reliable than private media, as we well know from countless examples. Like you, I’m just imagining that Korean Customs would get the mothership Korean government in more hot water if they made wild unsubstantiated claims. From what I see though, I don’t think they’ve actually made wild claims, and its just the media that has run away with it.
          • moop
            korean authorities have much to lose as well, afterall if these are indeed made from dead babies, their people were buying it, in a culture like china’s where face is important, i don’t think we can totally ignore this. i guess i’d like to know who actually did the testing. i mean the customs department can’t be equipped to do it themselves and some. also, using human parts other than placenta is accepted in chinese medicine, it may not be mainstream, but it is acceptable following confucian bioethics.
            maybe TCM isn’t to blame, but rather TCM’s retarded cousin folk remedies?
            unless the report will be released publicly we’ll never really know, but i guess a video documentary is supposed to some out about it. the people who did the tests still havent denied the claims that it is dead baby. i’d still say that the fact that they performed some kind of test still gives them more credibility than a govt agency that simply says, we have no reports of this ever happening in the past, and its most likely placenta.
          • anon
            I personally don’t think face is anything unique to Asian culture but I’m not discounting it either. It’s just not compelling. We can’t assume the Chinese are lying based upon our suspicions about them being somehow culturally motivated to avoid a loss of face (read: embarrassment) and THUS the Korean claims are necessarily true. This just isn’t a logical way to arrive at a reasonable and rational conclusion. It’s based upon layer upon layer of presumptions and prejudices.
            I’m not sure if Customs wouldn’t be equipped since I imagine part of their job is to ascertain the nature of suspicious items but sure, maybe they outsourced it to a lab which isn’t remotely uncommon. I too would like to know what the actual results are. All I know right now is that Korean Customs DID say they contained human remains. Everything else was conflated into that so I’m skeptical. As they say, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.
            I read that piece on Rectified.name and agree with it. I’m still very confident that the pills contain dried and ground up placenta, manufactured by small workshops rather than through large companies in cahoots with official hospitals. Placenta is easy to obtain and process, and it isn’t widely reviled unlike cannibalism taboo. If we make the assumption that these pills were manufactured by those who believe in black magic and marginalized folk remedies, then we’re also calling into question the claims made by SBS about the trade last year.
            Since we’re now going in circles arguing about who is more credible (and I appreciate your general civility throughout this), I’ll leave this debate at this: Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. We have an SBS report with claims that were both unverified and denied without SBS pressing the case. We have Korean Customs who seized a batch of pills and stated that there were human remains, but provided nothing else about the origins of those remains. The subsequent media reports have conflated this information into a mess of misleading sensationalism, with lots of poisoning the well but no actual evidence. It’s easy to make people doubt the Chinese and the Chinese government, but that’s still playing on prejudices instead of providing actual evidence of unscrupulous Chinese profiting off collecting dead aborted fetuses, chopping them up, microwaving them, and then grinding them up to make sex pills.
          • moop
            civility is my new middle name. you still seem to be choosing a side despite the lack evidence, you are basically echoing the ministry of health’s claims. the issue hasn’t been resolved. i’m saying that there is more credibility on the korean side since they a) actual have the pills b) ran a test c) said to contain human material and d) have yet to refute their previous claim of dead babies. the chinese side at this time has less to lend to their credibility. that’s what everyone does when looking at who is telling a story, look at credibility. the ministry of health has yet to establish as much credibility in my eyes than the korean customs department. maybe i should have prefaced my statement to joe blow with “the jury is still out on dead babies”, because in all accounts it still is.
          • linette
            The Korean, Japanese, and Chinese all share the same medicine practice. They all want it. There are demand for it. China even have black market for it. They use human bio matter for medicines. But the new generation many are against it. It’s gross. Korean and Japan also export them.
They are only good to work jobs that white don’t want getting discriminated against and lower pay. So you folks prefer that right.
The corruption is out of control and we don’t even know half of what goes on within the system! The snake head has to be chopped off before true progress can begin in China. You earn what you deserve through hard work and perseverance and not corruption and connections.
    Chinese people are the quickest to judge others while ignoring the fact that their people are still picking their noses out in public and slamming doors on pregnant ladies. Never judge a book by its cover, you ignorant fools.
    There’s a lot of foreigners in China that are just as bad, but believe me they’re the leftover lowlifes that don’t amount to nothing in their own countries, that’s why they’re there! In the US we call them trailer trash hicks…not educated, unhygienic, gut showing inbred people.
    Imagine if all of these angry anti-laowai people read chinasmack. i imagine they’d really want to bop foriegners over the head with bamboo sticks. It’s sad watching how these kinds of things happen. The root to me it seems, is not the presence of laowai, but anger toward their ability to sleep, and marry chinese women. Is this notion of the mark?
    I don’t think it is so much a concern over rape, but the alleged rape incident was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Seeing a ‘laowai’ between the legs of a woman against her will didn’t go over too well and caused a rise in intolerance toward interracial relationships.
    Interestingly, in homogenous societies where a small number of minorities are present, seems there is a pattern of those minorities being blamed for a high instances of “rape”. Just last week everyone claimed that all of the muslims (the most despised group in Europe) had the highest cases of rape. In America, there was a lot of blaming black guys for rape. Whoever is the most despised minority has their reputation smeared as rapists and in the case of China, it is the white guy’s/foreigner’s turn. Hopefully it doesn’t become too dangerous. sounds like the boxer rebellion, like some of the MC’s noted.
    • the ace of books
      “anger toward their ability to sleep, and marry chinese women.”
      …sleep *with?
      But otherwise – yeah, I figure part of it is the minority thing, but part of it is also history rearing its dubious head. People are mentioning the Boxers, people are mentioning Western Imperialism — when people don’t know how to label a situation, they look at history to figure it out.
      “The root to me it seems, is not the presence of laowai, but…”
      Well, and there I would disagree, sort of: the presence of laowai lends itself to stereotypes about laowai. So many laowai don’t understand China, and then blame China for what they don’t understand, and all the Chinese see is that misunderstanding and that blame. So, seeing a laowai, the stereotypes come to the forefront of people’s thoughts, and they begin assuming.
      Basically: it doesn’t matter what kind of laowai you are – the stereotype is painted on you from the moment folks see you.
  • Jinyao
    This guy, Yang Rui is such a poor interviewer. I watched his dialogue show where he asks the most basic questions and tries to stir up the China-West rivalry. Petty character who can only get a job at CCAV
    • Slob
      Another thing that gets to me is the whole “You don’t like it, leave!” attitude that many Chinese seem to have towards us. How is that being accepting and harmonious? Shouldn’t they be trying to figure out how to resolve the dispute rather than just sweeping it under the rug (which is commonplace here).
      In Australia, we have people protesting all the time telling the govt. what to do. Even foreigners do it. Even ILLEGAL aliens do it. People rock up on boats illegally, get placed into asylum centres and get treated better than a lot of the poorer Australians who actually work and are Australian citizens. Not only that, they f_cking complain about how they get treated at these centres. Really? Coming into MY country, telling MY govt. what to do, and then expecting MY tax dollars to pay for your bullshit? Gtfo. We don’t come here protesting or causing a huge ruckus that ends up on national TV or in the newspaper, do we? No, because we’re not stupid and know what happens if we do it here. The comments foreigners in Australia make to us, we take it lightly and don’t care too much. Here in China, people take the face issue way too seriously and are too proud to accept criticism. When foreigners here say bad words about the people, I only disagree when it’s completely false or biased. If it’s something about their rudeness or inability to line up in a queue properly, I will whole-heartedly agree no matter who is listening. If Chinese would take a good hard look at their etiquette and principles, there wouldn’t be so much criticism from the outside world.
          Sure, but if you’re honest with yourself you will find that due to: 1.China’s actual suffering at the hands of foreigners in the past;
          2. A long period of general isolation from foreigners and most people still having little contact with them;
          3. and last but not least, an education system and media that hammer home past grievances again and again and tend to present the Chinese side as completely innocent and the foreign side as completely evil/greedy/wrong in all disputes past and present…
          …that anti-foreign sentiment is just a tad more prevalent in China than many other places, and more easily stirred up among people who might not be full-time racists. Of all the good/perfectly fine experiences I’ve had with Chinese people, I have to wonder how many of them might have gone differently if the person involved had met one or two foreigners before me who’d been jerks or read an article that got him fired up that morning.
    Dear XXXX,
    My name is XXXX and I am a XXXX citizen living in China on a residential visa and have been living in China now for close to XXX years. I am extremely concerned with the turn of events that have come to rise in China with this 100-day sort of man-hunt on foreigners that has taken place. I find it EXTREMELY threatening to not only myself but my Chinese family and but have heard many stories of foreigners being harassed or assaulted by Chinese citizens in a sort of vigilante fashion of cleansing their country of “foreign trash”.
    Recently, a CCTV host (which is run and sanctioned by the CCP government itself) Yang Rui has hinted at foreigners being married to Chinese nationals as being spies. I would like to know what sort of measures will my government make in the event that an uprising does occur in China against foreigners and what it will do to pressure the Chinese government in asking this man to apologize for the ill-feeling he has stirred up amongst the international community.
    He is a public figure and directly connected with the Chinese government. I do not feel he should be able to get away with using such phrases and remarks against foreigners in China.
    I would like to know if it is officially safe to be in China under these sort of xenophobic actions as foreigners are now being cast under the light of rapists, spies, trash and other insulting words. I believe this man should be made to apologize and retract his statements before the fire in the hearts of the Chinese people against foreigners isn’t lit in the a frenzy.
    I hope you can see how this has wrought angst and nervousness with many foreigners. I hope my government is interested in doing what is best its people in making certain they are safe in China during this strange witch hunt.
    Regards,
          i mean due to the lower living standard and currency exchange rate, which both make those foreign trash live like a king in china even if by western standard they are poor worthless unemployment. this is why i often hear about asian women married to foreign men can live like a queen in asia but as soon as they move back to the west everything change because the same amount of salary only enough to support their daily life
            How convenient your world view is.
            So going by your logic, you think those millions of Chinese who emigrated to work (or not) all over the world are also worthless trash?
            No? Mmmm, the stink of hypocrisy is strong on you.
