Summary: January 12th, the displays of wealth on the verified Sina Weibo [microblog] account of “Jilin City Beijing Liaison Office worker Gao Yue’er” attracted netizens’ attention. Gao Yue’er showed off the Chanel shoes, Cartier watch, Miu Miu purse, ’82 Lafite and other luxury items she had purchased while shopping. After this was exposed, Gao Yue’er quickly deleted her microblog posts as well as cancelled her verified identity status. In response to this, the Jilin Municipal Party Committee Propaganda Department has stated that there is no such person at their Beijing Liaison Office.

Exposed: Government office worker showing off wealth on microblog

Following Guo Meimei falling into the whirlpool of public opinion after showing off her wealth on her microblog, “Jilin City Beijing Liaison Office worker Gao Yue’er” also attracted the questioning of netizens for showing off luxury goods on her verified Weibo microblog.

January 12th, a netizen revealed on Weibo that “Gao Yue’er”, a “Jilin City Beijing Liaison Office staff member”, was at the moment showing off the results of her shopping in Macau, her luxury purchases including a 52,300 yuan diamond-encrusted Cartier watch, ’82 Lafite, Miu Miu purse, and Chanel shoes. After this netizens posted this, it immediately led to many netizens forwarding it. Many netizens jokingly called her “Gao Meimei”.

What was odd was that once she was exposed, “Gao Yue’er” quickly deleted all of her microblog posts that involved displays of wealth, changed the name of her microblog account, and cancelled her verified account status. In doing so, “Gao Yue’er” not only failed to quell the questioning, she attracted even more netizen attention to herself. Many netizens posted screenshots of “Gao Yue’er” microblog, showing that she often visited high-end places and drove an Audi sports car.

The above news report shares similar information as the above NetEase article. For example, it shows Gao Yue’er’s Sina Weibo profile page before and after, as well as the brands and retail prices of the items she showed off through photos posted on her Weibo, including one t-shirt that cost over 2000 RMB.

Jilin government officials deny that she is one of their people while Sina representatives say the documents she submitted for verifying her identity were discovered to be fake after an investigation, and they promise to improve their procedures for verifying the identities of account holders. However, netizens point out that Sina promised the same thing last year following the Guo Meimei controversy but a similar incident has happened again. Other netizens suspect Sina has been bought off.

Screenshots of Gao Yue’er’s Sina Weibo microblog account were posted on popular Chinese discussion forum Mop. Above, a before and after comparison of her profile photo, name, and verified identity status. She changed her profile name several times after netizens started taking notice of her. The three sets of numbers on the right hand side show the number of people she is following, the number of people following her, and the number of microblog posts she has made. You can see her followers increase and the number of microblog posts decrease with her deletions. Below, some of her self-photos before she deleted them.

      It’s a human interest story. All television channels and news programs have segments like that, and a whole lot of Chinese people get pretty annoyed with rich people flaunting their wealth, especially when those people happen to be young girls who claim to be working for the government and don’t offer much evidence for them having legitimately earned that money.

      It hits all the right nerves in a society where rapid economic development may have improved the lives of most but has done so in a very visibly unequal way. Government corruption, materialism, arrogance…

      There are actually tons of people who post photos of their prized possessions online. The main thing with this story is that she said she works for some Chinese city’s liaison office in Beijing and her identity was marked as “verified” by Sina. In doing so, Sina was representing that her details about herself and occupation were true. So if they were true, the natural question is then: How does this girl have so much money to buy all these things and why is she so stupid as a civil servant as to think it was a good idea to advertise it, rubbing it in the faces of all the Chinese netizens who aren’t so lucky as her.

      And then there’s the criticisms against Sina itself for not actually doing anything to verify people’s identities when “verifying” people’s accounts.

        Do people need to provide strangers who peer into their social network lives evidence that everything they do or own is “legitimately” procured? Who are “netizens” to demand anything of anyone? And how is the natural question “How did she get so much money!!” If you think about it, if she worked at a gov’t office in any sort of position with status at a young age, it’s probably through family connections – which would imply family wealth. It is unreasonable to think her only income is from her government salary, and a little stupid at that.

        Most wealthy people don’t earn the majority of their money from working 9-5. It’s earned through smart investments and well placed bets, or inherited… Only a fool would not see that – I guess that goes to show that a majority of ‘netizens’ are complete and utter fools.

          No, of course they don’t have to, but they will be judged nonetheless based upon their appearances.

          Just look at the number of us who swore the Porsche owner in the recent post (http://www.chinasmack.com/2012/stories/porsche-buyer-demands-refund-beseiges-dealership-with-protest.html) MUST be trying to screw over the dealership and the dealership was entirely the innocent victim in the matter. What evidence did we have for assuming that? Nothing, except the prejudices some of us have.

          That’s the same case here.

          I wrote in a subsequent comment below that Chinese netizens also get annoyed with young girls or young people who are wealthy not through personal ability and achievement but through prostituting themselves as mistresses or because their parents are wealthy. The “connections” angle is also one that is prejudiced against because its nonetheless seen as unfair.

          I didn’t say they think her only income is from her government salary and I don’t its reasonable to assume that’s what they thought. As I said, they just assume her money is not legitimately earned. However much we want to argue that some rich people HAVE legitimately earned their money, through wise decisions or investments or whatever, it still doesn’t change what this “news story” is fundamentally about as a reflection of Chinese society, which is what I was explaining to Lee Miller.

            I don’t believe any of those items are even hers! The shoes look like they are sitting in a window at some shop. She never shows herself in the background or anything around them. If you look at the items on the bed, the bed looks like it is in a hotel. The picture of all the perfumes and other items in the bathroom all have ENGLISH LABELS and instructions/descriptions on them. She clearly has access to someone else’s belongings.

            You don’t have to believe those items are her’s. All that is important for understanding why this is a story at all is that enough Chinese netizens believe it is her’s. As the NetEase article and videos say, it doesn’t help that she tried deleting the “evidence” when people started noticing her and asking questions about how some lowly office worker is living such an extravagant life. The immediate suspicions become that she’s corrupt or tied to someone who is corrupt.

            Her deleting just makes people wonder what she has to hide, kinda like how we wonder what the Chinese government has to hide when it censors information.

      Government officials don’t often earn more than 3,000 – 3,500 RMB a month. In most cases.

      Therefore it would be impossible for her to afford all those things.

      People only get government jobs so they can earn ‘extra’ money. It’s endemic and accepted to a degree. But no one wants proof of what they all know is true.

      At the very least they can have the decency to hide it. That’s the Chinese point.

      Having said that, she’s a bit young to be getting that kind of money. Her position would only be low unless her father is in the office too.

      The whole thing is a bit suspect really. But oh well.

      I think that’s an unfair statement – first, Juicy isn’t a luxury brand, but some of her gear is considered “luxury brand”, it was just showing a bunch of photos so we could evaluate the problem with her eyes and plain-ness of her face in general, I think.

      “The chinese flaunt their wealth” — well, I think a lot of upper middle class to lower end wealthy flaunt their wealth when they’re young, it’s a similar situation in most countries – kids aren’t taught to be conservative and low-key – instead, it’s almost like a competition to show people you’ve got more than they have. It’s not a Chinese thing, it’s a youth thing. People save up until they can get some ‘thing’ they tell themselves they’ve always wanted, then when they get it, they want to show it to the world as an accomplishment. Look at weibo or twitter, people all over are guilty of this.

      I agree about the rotting teeth and no sense of style thing, those are 2 major issues plaguing modern China, although most of the younger crowd don’t really have the rotting teeth issue that a lot of 30+ do.

        People all over the world do it- heck, working class chavs in Britain like to wear Burberry (and has really cheapened the brand as a result, you will not catch me wearing that shit over here), and lets not forget the hilarious Russian yuppies.         Chinese brand flashing is on a different level though. I’ve seen middle aged women with branded gear that just clashes with all the other branded gear that they’ve literally thrown onto their bodies, while their more fashion conscious daughters look on in dismay. I myself have tasted more then once during nice business dinners this kind of Lafite’s, and can tell you they taste horrible, even worse then their cheap as great wall vine. The funny thing is they charge a small fortune for it in the restaurants, and this dumb asses even pay for it. A bottle of 82 lafite-rothschild is usually in the 3.5 thousand euro range, around 30k RMB. They sell their fake one which tastes like horse pee, for 5k !!! not bad price for an 59RMB vine:-))). Oh, and they like to brag about it when they order it, just to let you know how much they “appreciate” you as a business partner and to put on you some guilt, thinking they have easy game afterwards. When i don’t like the person and i am not interested in a deal, (but at least the food was good), then i let him loose his baby face, claim that they cheated him with this vine. Then arguments start between the restaurant owner and him and its no longer about our business deal, so i get them off my ass.

      Even in HK you can’t be sure to get a real lafite, canton people are too quire creative when it comes to cheating and lying. They might have 1-2 bottles original behind the window and also serve it on rare occasion to foreigners, but a local or mainland tourist gets some cheap bordeaux or rioja labeled as lafite :-)))

        Hahaha! Nice! I mean I don’t claim to be any kind of wine expert. I go to a few tastings in Niagara (the local wine region here) each year to buy a few months’ worth of wine. But I’ll be honest, I’m a regular salaryman who will likely never sample a grand cru bordeaux or burgandy in my lifetime, so I probably can’t tell a real lafitte or margaux from a decent bordeaux.

        What I don’t understand is how a coal mine owner from Dalian who has never left China expects to be able to tell rotgut from a genuine premier cru. Mainlanders are so naive. That’s like me buying a bottle of 100 year old “white liquor” and expecting to get the real deal. I can’t tell one bottle of disgusting Moutai from another because I never grew up drinking that garbage.

      I agree – if you are super rich you probably have no free-time, little chance to see your family and no real friends – you would be surrounded by wolves and sharks, with all your time taken up by watching them, pretending to like them and making sure they don’t make a move to take your stash of cash.

      The only rich with free time seem to be the mistresses, but they slowly go crazy and fall apart, because of the guilt and the fact that they can’t respect themselves – buying things with money you didn’t earn through honest work gives little satisfaction. Maybe that’s why they take photos of it and put them online, without culture how can they appreciate these things?     2) Who gives a shit if she has some expensive stuff posted on her weibo. A lot of people who buy their first few “luxury goods” paste their proud photos on Weibo for their friends or strangers to see.
    3) Lots of wealthy people give expensive gifts to girls who put out. This isn’t exclusive to China, but it’s definitely extremely common and accepted.
    4) Jealous people pay attention and like to “catch” those who they are jealous of, even though they’d likely take an even more seedy route to riches if they had either the skills or power to do so. Fuck them too.

      Yeah I can’t believe this is even considered news. China has a great divide between rich and poor; the nouveau riche in China are crass and uncultured -what’s new? Everyone knows that. And there is so much apparent outrage expressed in some of these forums, but how much do people really care outside of typical celebrity-hating and neighbour-jealousy.

      If there is such a large population of poor disenfranchised people why are they not crucifying the corrupt cadres and burning down the rich young master’s house? Obviously outside of internet rhetoric (where people express all sorts of outrageous shit that they would never consider doing) that kind of rage and anomie is absent. Obviously there are plenty of people invested in the system as it is (not only the corrupt wealthy).

      Another possibility is of course the chinese media is doing a spectacular job of suppressing the slightest hint of discontent, especially in the poor rural areas. If that is the case (which seems less credible to me) then Fauna and Chinese netizens should be rooting out these stories. Because they certainly have broader international appeal and more importance/consequence than a bunch of mainlanders resenting some rich girl’s shoe collection.

          I disagree that I personally have any interest in a particular type of story. I am not particularly invested in any of this stuff: I could care less if a 100 rivers get polluted or 100 chanel shoes get thrown in a bonfire. My particular question is whether this is truly a cross-section of what is being talked about in China. I find it difficult to believe that it’s stuff like this that people are interested in across the board. I mean here in North America we have people who follow slate and others who follow perez hilton, but it seems like almost all the stories here are of the sensational perez hilton type.

Thats the difference between china and other corrupted countries, cause in china even the ones which suffer from corruption are corrupted to, and when they complain about corruption of the upper class and gov. then its not just cause of their own terrible situation, its cause they have no chance to take part into the higher ends corruption game. While i had a lot of empathy with the working men in china, this empathy has disappeared after the first 6 month senselessly trying to help them and to improve their situation and conditions. Fuck even they themselves came to me and asked me what kind of person i am ? they found my willingness to help and my kindness rather confusing and suspicious, probably cause they didn’t get used to that. I once organized a collection of money after i heard that one of my employees kids needed an urgent eye surgery. The small girl was already blind on one eye, and she was going to loose the second one too. I asked my assistant to make a list of the office staff, workers and managers and to walk around to collect money. I told her she should tell everyone that it doesn’t matter how much the total sum will be, i personally will add whatever is missing. By the end of the day she was totally frustrated, came back to my office and said that NO ONE has given anything ?! I called all my managers into my office to ask them where the problem was ? Some of them complained that this is none of their business, so out of my own frustration i fired half of them immediately. I paid for the complete surgery out of my own pocket, which was no big deal, I think it was something like 3k US$ in total, but my intention was to make people feel something like solidarity, to motivate them to do good and to show that their boss cares. Fuck, wrong thought, seems that such things don’t work with certain folks. From that day on i keep most things on distance, when i want something done i just do it. Relying on this people will just end up in frustration and misunderstandings.

      up until today i receive letters from the girl and her family, they call me each christmas, new year, CNY and on my birthday, invited to to their simple home in ChengDu more then once. I wish there would be more people like that in china, but unfortunately they are in the extreme small minority here.

      I agree with you, that their own ignorance and refusing to help each other and the lack of any kind of social responsibility towards their neighbor and environment, will one day end up in a mess. By then i will get my ass out of here and go to another 3rd world country, always a bit wiser then in the previous one:-)

    hey, there’s no proof that any of those things are even hers. Evidence? The picture of the girl when she’s in the pink hat. Look at her kitchen. It is a mess! Things shrewn all over the table and the floor it is quite messy and the environment looks poor. The appliances look old and are disorganized, and there is hardly any room on the counters for them. The cupboards look bare or like there are only a few items in them. Nothing fancy. I do not believe for a moment that home she lives in is nice. All of the other pictures, she appears to be in a public place. Look at the background in the picture where she is wearing black. There are people milling around. The other pictures are tight closeups, either in vehicles or restaurants.

    Now, the picture of the purses and shoes — the lighting is completely different than it is in the kitchen. Notice the photo is a closeup so that we are unable to see that she is either taking pictures of shoes in a shop window or in a store. Or perhaps even someone’s home. The bathroom she takes a photo of does not match the messy kitchen. For so many products, she doesn’t even appear to wear makeup. I think the girl is pretending those things are hers when they are not.

People don’t buy something all at the same time then display it in the same location in the same room for the same lighting effect and background when snapping photos for their weibos. Some people are from wealthy families and still: Ugly, sloppy, tasteless, classless, proud. You should have a look in some kitchens and bedrooms of them and you would know what i mean. They care about different things then you do, hence you can see plenty of chinese males buying themselves real rolex watches in HK but have rotten teeth and wearing dirty ass cheap clothes. Thats just their style. We would probably first repair out teeth, but they just don’t give a shit, so do their women, so also don’t care if his teeth are rotten as long as he provides her a good life and pays for the children.

      Priorities baby, we all seem to have different ones. Mine is my good look, clean appearance, nice clothes, nice house and car, money, and all the chicks i can take into my cave…still waiting for ya !

People don’t care about rich people showing off, but this girl is provoking all the negative social tensions in the Chinese society nowadays which is government corruption, young girls becoming mistresses, kids with rich parents who are probably also corrupted. She obviously wanted the attention and it’s most likely just a publicity stunt because why else would she be doing it knowingly.
