The above microblog post was just one of many Whitney Houston posts to become amongst the most popular posts today on the Twitter-like service.

She was born with a good voice. Normal people’s lifespans are very long, so it definitely must’ve been problems with her lifestyle. Drug use, smoking, etc. are all reasons for her death! What we should feel sorry for is that this world has lost yet another sound of a soul! Whereas we don’t have to feel sorry for her death, as she only has herself to blame.

    >I had read on newspapers that she had become addicted to smoking marijuana
    >implying marijuana is a drug or can kill you

    It was the coke man

    • donscarletti

It can kill you, lung cancer is nasty, though I’ve never heard of anyone overdosing on a joint.

      • Foreign Devil

Have you heard anyone getting lung cancer from marijuana smoking? I’ve heard studies that there is no higher incidence of lung cancer among marijuana users. They only smoke one or 2 joints a day vs. . a whole pack of cigarettes a day for a heavy smoker. And the chemical components of marijuana are different and more natural. I don’t smoke it myself.. so I’m not defending a habit.

        • donscarletti

I’ve heard studies finding both ways, most seem to suggest that there is a link between marijuana use and lung cancer, but some (including a famous study in 2006) find no link. A big problem is that a good deal of people smoke both, sometimes even mixing in tobacco to aid in burning and enhance the aroma (pot smells like burning rope), the other problem is the illicit nature makes it hard to do surveys.

What is clear is that cannabis sativa has a lot of carcinogenic compounds (moreso than tobacco), the question remains just how much is absorbed by the lungs and how much is consumed by the average smoker. I have some friends who smoke 1-2 joints a day, but plenty of people describe their plan for the weekend as “hitting the couch with a big bag of weed”.

Either way, tobacco fucks up your lungs pretty bad and it’s legal. I don’t think there’s really much difference between the two leaves, though I think pot screws up your judgement a fair bit more (though maybe not as much as alcohol). I don’t get your point about pot being more natural though, they’re both leaves, and I’ve never heard of a pot smoker pass up some hash oil just because it’s processed.

          • Ryo

Tobacco companies add a lot of addititives in regular cigarettes to make them more attractive (addititive).

    • JustABlackWoman

      Yea I noticed that too

I think this person must be very sheltered or is not aware on the common usage of pot. I dont even smoke but I know enough to know dying from that, slim to none.

    • mankouzanghua

I was thinking about that too. “addicted” seems more highly loaded than “迷恋” (original chinese comment) in that the former often suggests a physiological component.

I’m not doubting that many chinese do believe marijuana is addictive and deadly, though.

      • dim mak

Yeah marijuana usage is pretty rare in East Asian countries

When I first moved to Canada, my mom equated it to drugs like heroin, and that anyone caught using it is like a hardened criminal

But then I realized it was Canada, dude. Our illegal Vietnamese immigrants grow the best bud in the new world.

        • zerostar

hahah, coming outta the fraser valley.

    • Alan

Word is coming out it was the prescription drugs, and perhaps the partying heavily the night before.

Either way, sobering news, and speculating about what it was that took her won’t bring her back….truly sad news:(

    • Irvin

I thought weed wasn’t addictive, I’ve never smoked it myself but the way my friends described it, “it makes you happy, sleepy and hungry”. So wouldn’t you just pass out from smoking too much? or maybe just get fat?

I do notice it fucks up your mental abilities though, I saw one of my friend tried to cover a rice cooker with a tea pot cover after smoking. Don’t know if it’s permanent or just temporary.

  • epuff

This was sad. I was watching a clip of her on Thursday night, as she was supposed to perform at a Clive Davis event, and she was talking and hugging people but something about her seemed vacant, like she was already gone.

Beautiful voice, beautiful woman. In America, pop stars and rock stars and celebrities often become involved in drugs. Don’t know how it happened to whitney because she was such a good girl. When she first came out and I was a ten year old girl, I used to take a hair brush and sing “saving all my love” into a mirror just like I was her. Brings back memories.

I’m glad she has passed away. Because she was only a shell of her former self, Whitney left a long time ago. perhaps she has found herself again in the after life. RIP Whitney.

(Maybe as an homage to Whitney I will sing one of her songs for my youtube channel. I do upload videos of myself singing different songs lol).

    • Uberche

You’re happy she died because she wasn’t as good as she used to be?! That’s a little messed up…

Also, guess that she’ll be doing a Heath Ledger and will sweep the “Best Supporting Actress” in the next (2013) Academy Award …
look at me talking all Hollywood, geesh!

    • epuff

wow, didn’t know they were remaking sparkle. awesome.

  • http://www.wtchina.freeforums.org Elijah

Man oh man, that movie always makes me tear up for some reason. But I prefer the “Deliver Us” song at the beginning, especially the mother’s vocalizations.

Only movie that does it more is Beauty and the Beast (when Belle comes down the stairs in her new creamy yellow dress and Beast has tidied himself up with a nice coat and tails, clincher is when the music starts, that’s it, I’m done!)

As for Ms. Houston, it’s a pity that she didn’t take better care of herself and find a better man to have around.

Remember kids, drugs are bad m’kay?

    • mr. weiner

obviously one of Whitney’s songs will be song of the article.
I’ll leave that choice to wiser heads than mine. I would however like to have secondary consideration given to Frank Zappa’s “Bobby Brown” for that bastard that ruined her. Not sayin’ she had no resposibility, just sayin’ is all.

The guy with the HK wife chips in again?

Remember kids, drugs are bad m’kay?

Easy to say when you are happily married, but what about those guys who facing life alone, and coming home to an empty apartment after a terrible week of work…would you tell them drugs are bad? Caffeine, nicotine, alcohol all drugs…if America liberalized a bit, then maybe this tragic death would NOT have happened!

      • mr. weiner

ahhh…so society was to blame.? I’m in favor of liberalsation [within reason] , but I think personal responsibility is also important.
God ,but she was so beautiful when she was young!

        • http://www.wtchina.freeforums.org Elijah

          Ummmm… Wow… Just wow…

I honestly can say I have no idea where you’re coming from on this Alan.

Does having a wife born in Hong Kong equate to anything specific or was that just to add to the randomness?

“Drugs are bad m’kay” is an extremely famous quote from South Park which is used by Mr. Mackey, the school guidance counselor. It was also used in the chorus to “Kids” by Eminem.

As someone who has seen the effects of drug abuse first hand, I can 100% verify that drugs are indeed bad… For you and everyone around you. Especially those around you, because by abusing drugs you’re able to escape into your addiction, but you’re leaving those around you to deal with the mess.

Pretty sure my joke (refer to the quote above) wasn’t talking about a cup of coffee or a smoke or a beer (although I don’t partake in any of them, I prefer English tea, cigarillos and cocktails hahaha)

          Any other questions?

          • Alan

I do have more questions, in fact.

As someone who has seen the effects of drug abuse first hand, I can 100% verify that drugs are indeed bad…

ALL drugs? What about someone who drinks and smokes every night, and can’t face the day without their caffeine hit? But someone who is more or less sober all year but gets out of their face on E every summer in Ibiza for a couple of weeks is worse? There is hypocrisy in that 100% all drugs are bad statement….

For you and everyone around you. Especially those around you, because by abusing drugs you’re able to escape into your addiction, but you’re leaving those around you to deal with the mess.

I can agree partly here, but I never tried to heap my own problems with using (when I did) onto others. And there is a difference between abusing and using drugs, taking a pill or a few lines of coke on a saturday night doesn’t a junkie make, no more than someone who gets pissed once a week on a saturday makes them an alkie….?!

Pretty sure my joke (refer to the quote above) wasn’t talking about a cup of coffee or a smoke or a beer (although I don’t partake in any of them, I prefer English tea, cigarillos and cocktails hahaha)

Kudos on English tea, but lipton doesn’t do it for me. Cocktails, too pricey…i’ll stick to beer…

            *facepalm*

Calm down Alan, no one is infringing on your freedom… Including the freedom to fuck up… No one terk yer jerb!

Popping pills, snorting powders and injecting yourself with poison IS bad… Not only medically speaking, but sociologically speaking. There is no way that anyone can seriously debate that.

Now, if you live alone and you want to drop acid and listen to Pink Floyd and watch the Wizard of Oz (it really does sync up) at home alone, then that’s awesome! If you can go to a rave and pop an E and still get home safely, great! But the second that someone else is involved then it becomes a burden. Really simple dude…

If what you’re looking to debate is the classification of what is and isn’t a dangerous/illegal drug, then there’s room to wiggle. You could split things into soft drugs, hard drugs and manufactured drugs. Pot, alcohol, caffeine, tobacco/nicotine, MSG (and other food additives) and light shrooms are what I’d call soft drugs. Heroin, cocaine, opium etc. are what I’d call hard drugs. Crystal Meth, LSD, PCP are what I’d call manufactured drugs.

Stick to the softies in moderation.

          • Alan

Even I am allowed to dissect your posting, right? As a Canadian, I am sure you value liberty, do you not? Will you allow me that much prized liberty to respond to you?

What about someone who drinks and smokes every night, and can’t face the day without their caffeine hit?”

            *facepalm*

A very mature response there…but you didn’t answer my question. Are you saying those are NOT drugs?

Calm down Alan, no one is infringing on your freedom… Including the freedom to fuck up… No one terk yer jerb!

Didn’t say you were infringing on my freedom, simply stating some opinions, If you have that right, then so do I.

Popping pills, snorting powders and injecting yourself with poison IS bad…

Depends on your definition of bad I suppose. Never injected myself, except when being put under in the hospital and needles scare the hell out of me.

Look, it’s about the user accepting the consequences of his actions for him or herself. Alcohol was proven to be more harmful than mdma in the UK, yet is socially acceptable. Even some police chief called for mdma to be downgraded. I’d wager most of our parents dropped LSD a few times. Are you saying noone gets involved when dealing with drunken assholes who get into fights and so on, I’ve seen far more trouble caused by people drinking, than I have by people love drugged up…

If what you’re looking to debate is the classification of what is and isn’t a dangerous/illegal drug, then there’s room to wiggle. I will agree with you there.

Heroin, cocaine, opium etc. are what I’d call hard drugs.

Cocaine use is more prevalent, than you may expect. Whether it is a hard drug would be questioned by many.

Crystal Meth, LSD, PCP are what I’d call manufactured drugs.

Or synthetic drugs yes, and I generally agree these lead to a bad end.

Am I the only one who did not like her music at all? I mean that “I will always love you” song. . that drones on and on is horrible. She’s probably the one who first popularized that over the top vocalization style that is so popular today with female singers. . A legend should be someone who’s made a massive contribution to their field that no one else could’ve. If the Beatles hadn’t written Hey Jude, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Walrus, et al, would anyone else have? If Whitney hadn’t sung the songs other people wrote, the smart entrepreneurs behind her would’ve found someone else up to the job.

Worse than horrible. When I think of all the fantastic music from black artists in the Seventies… James Brown… Parliament… Stevie Wonder… and that’s just some of the funky stuff -I haven’t even started on the jazz, and then I think about the shit that passes as soul and R’n’B today, it makes me vomit. Mass-produced, manufactured bollocks. I don’t know any musicians who rate Whitney.

Sometimes you may notice some nasty comments from Chinese regarding Black American and sometimes not. This is due to voluntary bias — that is, people who are providing personal opinions regarding a topic that matters to them led them to post while who cares not so much about the issue may even not post a comment at all. So in this case, these Chinese netizens are much more caring possibly because they admire her. On the other hand, sometimes you may see racist comments from other Chinese netizens on other issues because they may just so happen to be ignorant and post general bias revolving that certain race.

some singers i do not understand, as beyonce, always sing and dance but no any real famous song. christina aguilera, always with that dirty and a bit bitchy whore makeup…Birtiny is insane, but she gave us some good memory of teenage.

Lol, every black person sings the same, yup. And you must not listen to Beyonce at all to say she dont got any famous song. And I think youre focusing too much on Christina’s 90′s year when she did the dirty look, which she isn’t all that much like now if you saw her video’s.

      Overall, your opinion is wrong.

JUST FYI, Mariah is black. Her father was a black man. Her husband is a black man as are her new children. Mariah lost her voice years ago and sounds horrid.

Addiction is a disease. It’s like adding a stigma and blaming people for getting Alhzheimer’s.

…which may be overly relevant in some China’s of the world.
